CLAWS

karrueche PHOTOGRAPHY ARTHUR GALVAO For 29-year-old actress and model Karrueche Tran, love and growth are one in the same. Perhaps best known these days for her portrayal of Virginia Loc in the smash hit TNT crime drama series, CLAWS, Karrueche is currently filming the series' second season in New Orleans. She can also be seen in the upcoming Lionsgate film The Honor List about a group of high school friends who fulfill the items of a bucket list they sealed in a time capsule years before. We recently spoke with Karrueche about everything from the sisterhood of beauty salons, to spreading more love in the world, to the zen and art of chilling by the beach.

MAY 2018 We are so ready for the summer and want to start celebrating it a tad bit earlier this year. We are starting the summer festivities with Karrueche Tran wearing some amazing, popping, and thrilling fashion pieces. She was stunning on set and we hope you can see it being illustrated in the photos and as you read the exclusive interview... Her show Clows is premiering its 3rd season June 10th, and we are addicted. The team of BELLO mag is growing and you will see more and more creative and talented contributors, photographers, and people that get things done behind the scenes. Most of all, we want you to see more of what is happening while we are creating our issues: we invite you to subscribe to @BELLOmag Instagram so you can get access to LIVE stories from the photo shoots. "And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer." —F. CLAWS | TNT

In order to be a star in Hollywood in 2018, there's a good chance you will be spending a lot of time away from the lights of LaLaLand. Case in point, we spoke with Karrueche Tran by phone as she was shooting the second season of TNT's CLAWS nearly 1,900 miles east of Los Angeles in New Orleans. Being immersed in New Orleans for so many months has given Karrueche a whole new respect for the Big Easy. "We started shooting the second season in late January of 2018 [here in NoLa]. We're shooting ten episodes and we're set to be done in midJune. I love and enjoy the city of New Orleans," she says. "I was born and raised in L.A. which is so different compared to New Orleans -- the culture, their traditions, the amazing food, and that southern hospitality. It's nice to be able to come home to L.A., but also to get to experience New Orleans. Filming remotely allows me to really focus on my work." She has most certainly found her own set of favorite things in New Orleans, but what's the #1 item she wishes she could bring back home with her to L.A.? "Probably the food!" she tells us. "L.A. has some great food, but New Orleans has their incredible southern comfort food. It makes it hard to eat healthy (laughing)." The amount of comfort Karrueche gets from the local food is not unlike the comfort her fans get from watching CLAWS. Sort of a cross between Steel Magnolias, The Sopranos, and Breaking Bad, TNT describes the show perfectly: "CLAWS is a midnight-dark, wickedly funny meditation on female badness set in a South Florida nail salon. It follows the rise of five diverse and treacherous manicurists working at the Nail Artisan of Manatee County salon, where there is a lot more going on than silk wraps and pedicures. CLAWS is about good women caught in bad places with worse men. It's the story of hardworking women trying to get by in this economy, set against the surreal, bright, gritty landscape of Florida and the luscious, absurd, extreme excesses of the crime world."

7

We asked Karrueche why she thinks audiences have fallen so madly in love with these women. "Audiences have never seen women in this light before," she says. "Shows that deal with crime almost always deal with male-driven stories, but with CLAWS, the women dominate and are involved with everything -- from the crime, to the drugs, to the sex, and more. What's so beautiful about this show is we have these five amazing women who are so deeply connected and have such a tight bond. They're like family and they love each other so much, yet each is so different and unique, and each of them have such a different perspective on the world and come from different walks of life and skin colors. Despite being so varied, they all still love each other," she says, "and I think that's what women can relate to. I think our female fans are each able to find that one character they can really connect with." It's not only the fans connecting with the characters, it's also the stars themselves. Playing someone as fierce and strong as her character, Virginia Loc, has been a huge source of inspiration for Karrueche. "[Playing Virginia] has inspired me to be a bad ass bitch (laughing). That sounds crazy but it's the truth," she says. "Virginia is very truthful, she does not hold back, she is genuinely herself, she is confident, and as Karrueche I can sometimes feel shy or insecure, overthink things, or get nervous, but Virginia helps me realize I can be and do anything I want at all times. There have been times, in fact, where I've had to do a gig and I'd be nervous, but then I'd think to myself, 'No, think like Virginia would! You can do this!' So yes, Virginia brings out the bad bitch in me."

our own little family. We support one another, protect one another, and really help guide me." It's probably no accident that Karrueche and her beautician co-stars have bonded so strongly on set. Beauty salons are one of the most beloved cultural hubs of social connectivity in the Deep South. "For many women, beauty salons are the core of a lot of friendships," Karrueche explains. "When women are there, they get to be together, be social, be themselves, let their hair down, and connect with other women. Plus, when a woman leaves a salon she feels glamorous, like a million bucks." Another of Karrueche's highly anticipated projects is the Lionsgate film The Honor List (set for release in 2018). The film tells the story of four teenage girls who, after sealing a time capsule list of things they absolutely must do before graduation, lose touch through the years. By graduation, however, they reconnect, resurrect the time capsule, and start crossing everything off their list. So what might be the biggest items on Karrueche's own bucket list? "I definitely want to go to Vietnam (my mother is from there). Skydiving is also near the top of the list." She's also managed to stay close with some of her BFFs from high school. "I have a lot of friends from high school that I'm still close with. One of my closest friends is from seventh grade in middle school," she tells us.

We asked Karrueche about some of the other people that are huge sources of inspiration for her right now. "Ava DuVernay is the holy mother of everything," she beams. "I really adore her because she's hard-working, creative, outspoken, vocal with her feelings, all of which is so inspiring. I'm also inspired by all the women on CLAWS, too. We're like

Acting isn't the only passion in Karrueche's life at the moment. One of her biggest is the social media project she's started called With Love. "With Love is a movement I started on my own. I've noticed in my own relationship with social media I have a love-hate relationship with it. You can use social media to expand your brand and your platform, but there's also a negative component to it as well," she explains. "People feel like they have a license to be as mean and negative as they want to, and I feel like it's affecting the younger generation in forgetting how to simply be polite. I want to spread love and positivity, and show people that it's OK to express love, give compliments, to be nice, etc. I feel it's getting lost in the younger ones, and if we don't slow it down it's just going to get worse. So I hope With Love is helping turn that tide and get some loving energy flowing. There's nothing better than the feeling of love," she says. "Not just in an intimate relationship between two people, but also just having love in your heart when you're walking down the street."

And what about her summer radar? "Work, work, work! Work comes first, but I'm also a tropical girl. I love the beach and sun, and next week I'll be in Florida which I'm excited about so I'll be on the beach the whole time. But I love to work, and I love to grow from experience." CLAWS returns to TNT for season two on June 10, 2018. The Honor List hits theaters in 2018.

Your path to success has been a rocky one: how did you overcome your past? Who are some people who inspired you on the way? Staring at a 35 Year to Life Sentence at 20 years old changed my perspective on the world. The State of California was possibly going to give me a life sentence. Prior to that, I was very closed to the depths of life. Prison let me see the world and life as never before. I met men who had been in for 30 years. Young men my age at the time who were never coming home. Upon my release, I was forever changed. Prison was where I studied how to be a man. Strength, wisdom is what I gravitated to. How to carry myself, what and what not to do in order to survive. These teachings I would forever hold dearly. These men that taught me this, I will probably never see gain. Amidst many of your features, how was playing in “American Crime,” given that your character was a former gangbanger implicated in a drug-related murder? Playing “Hector” in American Crime was a blessing. I was able to use personal life experiences and bring them to the character. Him being incarcerated, having a daughter, the feeling of eventual freedom. I was able to humanize “Hector.” To the outside world, he was just bad guy. I believe I gave you something that is hardly tackled in storytelling. “Why we become what we become.” How has your past experience influenced your acting and the way you see success? Do you feel as if it has made you a better actor? I can attribute my past to everything that has manifested in my life today. The darkness and struggle I went through as a child. The biggest thing, is that it has helped me stay grounded and connected to the work. The work and the hustle is how everything evolves.

Sweater SOULSTAR | Jewelry ROZALIYA JEWERLY PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES & WALK OF SHAME, are two very different genres of movies: what is your method of adapting to the different roles? Our jobs as actors is to “live truthfully in the imaginary circumstances.” Meisner~ Whatever the world is we are supposed to adapt. In 2015, you were nominated for a Primetime Emmy for outstanding actor in a limited series or a movie, “American Crime”: what was your very first reaction to this? I was quite surprised. It was my first TV Series and I never had followed the Emmys prior to this. I didn’t understand the magnitude of this accomplishment. The fact that I was nominated was the WIN.

If I say the word “IMPOSSIBLE,” what would you answer to that? That word derives from no truth. It does not benefit nothing. It is just a thought. A thought that produces no results but hinders your true greatness. If you could give advice to our readers who feel lost at times, what would it be? That no one can save you but you. Whatever you put energy that is what will manifest. Our societies have been manipulated with what people should think and feel. But not all thoughts from society are good. We must take a step and reevaluate the truth of where we come from and where we stand.

Your latest movie BREAKING IN just came out, do you feel excited It is ok to not fit in to the majority. Believe that you are far greater than what they all Imagined. and proud of the work you delivered? I feel extremely proud of my work. The world has not seen me tap into a character like this. I never judge the character, I just bring 110% of me.

Tell us about the upcoming Hulu show "All Night". What can you tell us about the character? The role? And how your character interacts with the various other characters in the show? “All Night” follows a group of high school graduates through their lock-in grad night party, and they will literally do whatever it takes to make their remaining high school dreams come true. My character’s name is Cassie. She’s kind of a zero f**cks given type of person (which I love) haha. But she definitely also has layers to her. I have a twin brother in the show named Christian who I have some moments with, but the two people I am with the most in the show are my best friends Deanna and Fig. We have been best friends for forever, and have always marched to beat of our own drums. How is "All Night" Different" from any role you've played in the past? It’s the first time I have ever played a lesbian. I’m not queer in real life, but I am so happy and honored to have been able to represent someone from the LGBTQ+ community on this show.

What inspires you in your acting? Any influences? My parents are a huge inspiration to me. They are both beyond supportive of my dreams. Also, what inspires me is being able to connect with people through my art. It’s so crazy to know that some of these roles people have actually experienced and gone through. So being able to bring that to life and connect with someone on the other side of the screen is huge for me. I would have to say my biggest influence as an actress would be Lucille Ball. I love her so much. On any given day at any given time, I can throw on an episode of “I Love Lucy” and laugh my ass off. No matter how many times I’ve seen the show (which is way too many to count). She was such a hard worker and so dedicated and driven. At what age did you know that you wanted to start acting? I knew I wanted to act ever since I was little. I remember my cousin and I used to make up our own skits and perform them in front of our parents and family. No matter how tired they were we made them sit through it haha. Any words of wisdom you have for anyone looking to get into the acting business?

Tell us of a dream role. I’m sure I will have many dream roles, but right now, I would love to play someone dark and mysterious. I love thriller and suspense movies. Maybe a character like Esther from “The Orphan”, or Norman Bates from “Bates Motel”. But I also really want to play a badass crime fighting woman! That would be so amazing and fun to play.

Stay true to who you are, work hard, and never give up. You will get knocked down many times, and there will definitely be moments where you’ll want to give up, but always always believe in yourself. Don’t ever let anyone tell you your dreams are too big. As you know, Bello is a lifestyle magazine. Can you tell us more about your personal style? Personally, I love anything cute and comfortable. Jeans are definitely a huge part of my wardrobe. I love that you can dress them up or down for almost any occasion. My mood definitely inspires my look for the day though. Can you let us know any skills you may have the average person may not know about you? I am half Persian and speak fluent Farsi!

exclusive conversation with

ELLERY SPRAYBERRY Photography ARTHUR GALVAO

ELLERY SPRAYBERRY interview by Alexandra Bonnet READERS OUT THERE KNOW BELLO MAGAZINE IS A FAN OF DYLAN SPRAYBERRY BUT ANOTHER SPRAYBERRY HAS CAUGHT OUR ATTENTION. ELLERY SPRAYBERRY, THE YOUNGER SISTER OF DYLAN SPRAYBERRY, FASHIONISTA AND OVERALL BEAUTY, MAY SOON BE TAKING THE SPOTLIGHT FROM THE TEEN HEARTTHROB. THE YOUNG ACTRESS HAS ALREADY MADE WAVES IN HOLLYWOOD AND IS SURE TO BE ONE OF THE NEXT PEOPLE TO WATCH. Many people in industry know how challenging becoming an actor may be, can you tell us some of the challenges you are facing starting your career. Being in this industry is extremely hard and every actor/actress has their challenges. Some of my biggest challenges are being okay that you aren’t always going to book the role, staying motivated even if things aren’t going your way, and keep reminding myself that this is a journey not a sprint. Being 17 years old, you have already made quite am impact acting in different movies, how was it landing your first couple of roles. Well haha it was amazing! I started acting when I was a tiny little thaaang. But I still remember my 6 year old self booking my first job on House, and how excited I was. Being on set for the first time, I just absolutely fell in love with it and knew this was my passion and what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. What are some key lessons you have learned since you started acting? I think some of the biggest lessons I have learned from being in this business is to just be YOURSELF and be confident with your choices because being yourself will get you the furthest. Also that even if things aren’t going your way, you keep going and chasing your dream and don’t give up because good things come to good people who work hard. Has your older brother, who is also an actor (Dylan Sprayberry) inspired you in any way? How did your parents feel about you pursuing this career as well? Are there other key players that have inspired you as well. Ohhhhhhh Dylan. Dylan is probably my biggest inspiration in my acting. I look up to him and always have: as inspiration in my acting but also just in life. I like to think that we are always inspiring each other. My parents are the best. They have always supported us. They did move us out here from Texas to act haha. My whole family are inspirations to me. By being there for me when things get difficult, everyone is so supportive and I’m so grateful for them. Where do you see yourself in five years from now? In 5 years, I see myself hopefully on an awesome show, making super cool movies, writing, starting some charities, and inspiring other people to chase their dreams!! As you may know, Bello magazine is a style and lifestyle outlet. Tell us about your personal style? Favorite designer? An item you think everyone must try out? I think I would describe my style as tomboy chic.. if that’s a thing?? Haha I like to find ways to be comfy but also look cute at the same time. I make a lot of my clothes too. I paint on my jeans and cut up my t- shirts to give it some pizzazz. My favorite stores are urban outfitters, free people, and top shop. If I had 1 tip of advice: your clothes don’t have to be expensive to be cute. You can buy a 5 dollar t-shirt, add some holes, cut it up and make it your own. First word that comes to mind when you think about acting: GO. Create

OLIVER STARK

THE BUDDING YOUNG ACTOR OLIVER STARK SPEAKS TO BELLO MAGAZINE ON BEING AN INTERNATIONAL ACTOR FROM BRITISH ORIGINS. ALREADY HAVING LANDED ROLES IN BOTH THE BIG AND SMALL SCREEN, HE HAS PORTRAYED CHARACTERS IN UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS, “INTO THE BADLANDS,” AND THE LEAD CHARACTER DYLAN IN MINDGAMERS. CURRENTLY PLAYING EVAN “BUCK” BUCKLEY IN THE HIT FOX SHOW 9-1-1 OLIVER STARK IS SURE TO MAKE A LOT OF BELLO READERS BLUSH.

Photography ARTHUR GALVAO | Styling LUKE FUNTECHA & TIFFANY YEHUDA | Interview by Alexandra Bonnet

Tell me more about the role you played of Evan “Buck” Buckley, in the hit TV show “9-1-1.” How was it having to play an American firefighter? What kind of training did you do to put yourself in the mindset of the character? Were you looking forward to this role? It was, and is, such an honor to get to play a firefighter. Firefighters are everyday heroes who I think are often overlooked - so to get to play one as a part of a show that is doing a huge amount to try and pay tribute to them... I feel very lucky! We didn't get too much time to actually train before we started shooting, but we have amazing consultants on set with us who are active firefighters when they aren't at work with us so they help make it feel very real! As soon as I found out I got the part I was very excited to start and right now I can't wait to go back to start shooting Season 2! How different was this role compared to others you have played in the US, such as “Ryder” in AMC’s “Into the Badlands”? Funnily enough I actually think I was a little more similar to Ryder than I am to Buck... minus the evil. I think people often think I'm probably a lot like Buck in my real life, but the truth is I'm a lot more introverted than he is. So it was a lot of fun getting to explore a side of myself, through Buck, that I don't really have the confidence to bring out in Oliver. Also, it feels like Buck has already gone through such growth as a character, which is a delight to get to perform, and I look forward to that continuing to happen. Many viewers may know there is a difference between American television and that of the UK, what are some differences you’ve experienced as an actor. The scale is much bigger here. We are able to create incredible set-pieces here in the US that TV shows often don't have the resources to create in the UK. In episode 4 of 9-1-1 we bought a plane and cut it in half to create the plane crash sequence and that's just one example! But I've always found that once you're there doing the work, all sets tend to feel similar. I was very nervous when I first started work in the US - but once I arrived I realized it all works the same in the end! What made you want to move to the US to pursue your career? Do you travel back and forth between England and the US for work? I felt like I had hit a ceiling in the UK. I wasn't having many opportunities to audition back home and I felt like my career was coming to a halt. So I came to the US to be a fresh face and start over. It felt amazing to come here and start to be given the chance to audition for really great parts and really feel myself become invigorated by the possibilities in LA! Your original name is “Oliver Leon Jones,” so where did Oliver “Stark” come from? Stark was my late Grandmother's maiden name. When I joined the acting union in the UK 'Oliver Jones' was taken so I had to come up with something else! Do you have a motivational word or phrase that pushes you forward? Or advice you have for others. When I was going through a bad time before getting 9-1-1, I was brought a lot of comfort by the saying,' You're not going through it, it is going through you'. The idea that whatever I'm experiencing will pass through me and I will be stronger for it. If you could give one piece of advice to your past self, what would it be? I would tell myself that it's only once you start to accept yourself that you'll start climbing the ladder to happiness and, hopefully, success. I spent a long time trying to be something I'm not. It's a constant battle, but I'm working on just being me.. and knowing that's enough.
