JULY 2018 Every issue of Bello Mag is an entity into itself, and the beauty of doing what we do every month is that creation is all achieved through team work. You can plan everything from the mood board to the styling and the location but you never know what the result is gonna be until you are done shooting it. Most times it even takes us a couple of days to go back to that said shoot in order to have a clear mind on the story we want to tell. But this cover with Quincy came along in the most perfect and organic way possible, with everyone involved bringing their absolute A game, and we sincerely hope you are going to love this issue as much as we do. Creating also involves letting go of something you have just done. It’s not just about doing better next time, but being able to love and be satisfied with what you have achieved. 172 may sound like just a number but looking back we would have never imagined we would actually be here where we are now: in our 172nd issue of BELLO. With that in mind, I have said this many times before, and I will continue to say it, especially to you, our readers who live in such a “social” world that connects us beyond what people could have ever dreamed of, but that also affects us deeply, in ways we still don’t understand: it’s all about believing in what you do and not caring or listening to the negativity given by others; because at the end, all this negativity, the attacks, remarks, it all belongs to them. And one day they will realize that what they have said about others, was simply defining themselves all along. Being somehow interested in numerology, I realized that the addition of 1+7+2 = 10. The meaning of 10 is the "divine order”. It represents the creator and the creation -matter and harmony; which “coincidently” is just how the BELLO mag team feels today. In Tarot, 10 is the wheel of fortune, symbolizing the beginning of a new cycle. It’s a number that is letting you know change is good, and because nothing is ever permanent, change is the nature of everything.
Ciao,
Stephane Marquet Creative Director

Your life story is a perfect intersection of fashion, music, and business. Do you see all three of these dimensions as having equal importance to you at this point in your life, or is one of them taking more prominence right now? All three definitely have equal importance in my life because they all make up who I am. Think of it as a pie, or a puzzle. All these aspects of my life are the pieces to finish the puzzle. Atlanta is enjoying such a huge moment in the sun right now. Having spent so much time there growing up, can you describe how the city helped shape your style? The state of Georgia definitely comes with an impressive cultural territory -- Georgians start a lot of trends from fashion to dance to music. I’m thankful for my upbringing because I was able to be myself amongst people of different cultures. The southern hospitality the South provides is also very unique and it really affects you. You've been blessed with the ultimate gift of having an incredible successful family of mentors to inspire and guide you. What is the #1 greatest lesson you've learned from, let's say, your godfather Quincy Jones? To tell you the simple truth, he elaborated in a lot of ways which are too much for me to explain in one soundbite, but he let me know to always keep myself clear of all the bad that comes with the industries we work in. You're a huge model, but also a fashion entrepreneur. Can you think of one or two fashion designers or fashion houses whose business models represent something you aspire to the most? Louis Vuitton’s craftsmanship and detail and the the way it connects to the art of travel is something I admire and aspire to be as a brand. I’m on the move a lot and I need things that are made well and that last. I like luxury brands that really care about durability as well as refined luxury.
Hands down the Louis Vuitton show was the best experience I’ve had at a show. It was conceptually, physically, and visually outstanding. Virgil Abloh becoming the men’s artistic director for Louis Vuitton is a huge moment in fashion history, and I was proud to be a part of that black excellence. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I 100% see myself continuing to make films and music, as well as creative-directing. I also feel by then people will run the world instead of society -- I want to be ahead of it all. I say that in an industry way because I feel today the industries are changing. But no one can adjust to change like old times. There’s always much more than what is presented.
What are some of the biggest things you're looking forward to this summer? Hopefully I can fit in a vacation or two before I start filming season three of 'STAR'. So it’ll be amazing to be back working! It’s always an amazing time with the cast and crew. What's the #1 piece of advice you would give to someone trying to pursue a career such as yours? Everyone must know what they are signing up for. You have to know 100% of everything that comes with the industry before committing. It takes a strong heart and tough skin and PASSION! If you wait around nothing will get done. Sometimes you have to play more than just “your role.”
Are there any music projects you’re currently working on that you’re excited about and can share details about with us? I recently released two new records on my birthday titled, “You’re Crazy I’m Fine" & “Snuggle Up”, both which represent the start of my new sound. The music is finally in a place where I want it to be -- sonically, emotionally, lyrically, etc. My new strategy (which I think should be everyone’s) is to GET THE MUSIC OUT. I’m still letting the world know who I am as an artist, but moreso as a person. Music is that connection to everything, especially emotions. What’s the biggest motivating force in your life? Life itself. Life is beautiful. As well as people who are similar to me, who want to make a difference. People fail to master the simple things in life, but that’s where the real beauty is. Discovering new things daily is important. The mind has plenty of space -- USE IT.
What's an example of a fashion show you've been in recently and had the absolute time of your life?

You currently play the role of Cruz in the critically acclaimed series called “Vida,” tell me more about this experience: do you face any challenges while playing this character? Playing Cruz is a dream for me as an actor in that I get into her skin in ways I don’t usually have the opportunity to do when approaching roles. The shifts in voice, posture, clothing, gait, personality, piercings, and of course the gorgeous tattoo sleeve are all tools that allow me to do justice to this woman who is way cooler than I am. The challenges for me with the project felt bigger than playing Cruz. It was in the pressure that comes from representing a specific community correctly. It takes place on the eastside of Los Angeles and some can understandably be sensitive to how their culture and community are portrayed on-screen. And the nudity. I’ve never done that before, actually none of us had, but like the others I felt it was for the greater good. So that people can see themselves reflected on the screen. Not only are we showing many different body types but also the sex scenes are not shot in a glossy, perfect Hollywood way. We’re showing that sex can be messy, uncomfortable, vulnerable or disconnected, and sometimes even degrading. Being born in Puerto Rico and raised in Saudi Arabia and Japan, how did you know you wanted to get into American film and television? Is there a specific moment when you decided on this career? I became obsessed with all things theater-related at age 6 and was always acting in school plays. At 13, I started working professionally in Japan. We lived in Yokohama, 30 minutes outside of Tokyo by train, and every time I went into the city for jobs and castings I was so excited I couldn’t contain myself. In Saudi Arabia, there were no movie theaters growing up. There was a video store with some of the newest Hollywood movies but they were bootleg copies. Ones that were filmed from
53
the back of movie theaters where you could see people getting up and walking across the screen, hearing them cough and talk. Any scene that showed kissing, sex, or women showing too much skin were cut out. It left me hungry for more, wondering and imagining what had happened during those large missing chunks. I always knew I would pursue this career and it wasn’t until I had the luck of moving to Hollywood with my family that I began to focus on it solely. My father was transferred to LA for work for one year before moving back to Saudi Arabia and I stayed. Would you say that working on different platforms in this industry (commercials, television, film) has allowed you to be a better actress? If yes, how so? Definitely. Each discipline has its own set of parameters, challenges, and opportunities for growth. I am a big proponent of putting the work in and being dedicated to the craft. Then at some point just letting it all go, knowing that the safety net is there. Yes, and even for commercials. To be specific and committed while capturing a room of varied creatives and corporate clients in 30 seconds or less is an art in itself. You have been part of over 150 national and international commercials and print campaigns: how do you prepare yourself before each one? I do my homework, get enough sleep, and focus on being present. My heart and connecting with the excited little girl within is where my creativity lies. From the styling, hair and makeup to the distinct yet magical exchange with directors and photographers, I find so much joy in the creative collaboration. It’s what fuels me. In addition to playing in front of the screens, you also take part in experimental theater and participated in the first production in Los Angeles of the Latin American theater experience, Micro Teatro: did that experience
July 2018
teach you anything new about yourself? I learned so much about myself through that intimate theater experience. Mostly of being emotionally stripped down and moving past walls I still had around my vulnerability. Our amazing director created a safe space where I could face hard truths about myself since the subject matter coincidentally mirrored what I was going through in my personal life at the time. There were two of us actors doing a very intimate and emotional play in a minuscule room with 15 audience members inches away, 4 to 6 performances per night at the top of every hour, and myself naked under a thin sheet that was constantly shifting since I was being massaged. It was scary to do but a wonderful challenge that I hope to take on again. The intimacy between us and the audience was so special, something that happens when a person or camera is only a few inches away. If you could speak any other language in the world, what would it be? Japanese, hands down. What I know is basic and not enough to go deeper into the culture. I am fascinated by Japanese tradition, design, the juxtapositions between conservatism and sexual kink, high standards, and incredible attention to detail. Tokyo rivals Burning Man in feeling like you are on another planet and I love that. When faced with a challenge, what would be your advice to best overcome it? Ideally, face it head first, don’t procrastinate, follow your heart but use your head, speak up, try to see the bigger picture, be vulnerable and honest, lead with compassion, tell your truth, be kind to yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. But we’re only human so just do the best you can. And most important, don’t forget to acknowledge the support and love around you.

ULLUA interview by Alexandra Bonnet THE YOUNG AND TALENTED JAY ULLOA IS MAKING MOVES IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. FROM TOP STUDENT AND CAPTAIN OF HIS HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER TEAM TO RISING STAR, JAY HAS WOWED HIS AUDIENCE WITH HIS AMAZING VOICE AND SONGS. HE JUST RELEASED HIS FIRST ORIGINAL SONG, "MANOS AL AIRE," WHICH WILL HAVE YOU UP ON YOUR FEET THIS SUMMER! JAY ULLOA IS SURE TO BE ONE OF THE NEXT PEOPLE TO LISTEN TOO.
When you were 14 years old, you participated in the singing competition series “La Banda” and were the youngest contestant. Describe to me that experience and what prompted you to sign up. When I signed up I was a little scared because I didn’t know what to expect. When I got the call back I was excited and couldn’t wait to start. It was a little nerve wrecking because I was the youngest one on the show and I had never taken a vocal lesson in my life. I learned a lot and it gave me my first taste into the music industry. Being the team captain of your soccer team and one of the top students in your class, what motivates you to be at your best? How do you balance school and singing? Managing sports, school and music is not an easy task, but you just have to put your priorities first and know how to handle it. Right now it’s the summer, so I’m completely focused on music. At what age did you discover your love for music? Did anyone in particular inspire you? When I was 9 years old my mom forced me to join the choir with her and from there on I started loving singing and playing instruments. I owe it to her! You are just starting your solo career as a young singer and are releasing a third song which is also your first original one. Describe to me how this experience has been going. Did you ever expect it to happen so fast? No I did not expect this to happen so fast, I still cant process everything it seems so unreal. All the love from the fans has been amazing! Tell me more about your original song Manos Al Aire, that was just released. What is it about and what is its source of inspiration? Have you written any songs before? I wrote this song in LA, because I met this girl and she just worked too hard, had a bunch of problems, and was stressed out all the time. I just wanted for her to let it all go and enjoy herself. Yes, I’ve written many songs in my bedroom, but with “manos al aire” I got to collaborate with amazing writers. Where do you see yourself in five years? I see myself with a 5 piece band selling out arenas! Favorite activity when you aren’t singing: GO. My favorite activity when im not singing has to be producing music or playing soccer.

JAYLEN BARRON Photography SARAH KRICK
interview by Alexandra Bonnet BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED, JAYLEN BARRON IS ON THE PATH TO SUCCESS. CURRENTLY PLAYING IN THE RECENTLY RELEASED SECOND SEASON OF THE NETFLIX SERIES "FREE REIN," THE YOUNG ACTRESS HAS ALSO STARRED IN MANY OTHER SERIES SUCH AS "GOOD LUCK CHARLIE," "SHAMELESS," AND MORE. JAYLEN BARRON IS LIVING HER DREAM TO THE FULLEST AND WE ARE EXCITED TO SEE WHERE SHE GOES NEXT!
Currently, you play in the Netflix series “Free Rein” which has a second season that just came out. Tell me about the role you play and how you feel about Season 2. Do you connect on a personal level with your character? I play Zoe, an American girl who travels to England for the summer to visit her grandfather but soon she realizes the biggest adventure of her life will begin. I think I do connect with Zoe and her adventurous spirit. How do you feel about being part of a series that won a Creative Arts Daytime Emmy for Best Children’s Series and was nominated for a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Children's Program? Do you feel that your role in “Free Rein” is some of your best work so far? It feels unreal honestly and amazing and unbelievable! I’m always learning and evolving in my career so, I feel I give it my all with all my projects. When did you know you wanted to become an actress? How did it all start and how have you grown since? I’ve always known. I can’t remember a time where I didn’t know I wanted to act. Acting started for me the same way most people start, with a headshot and castings. You have played recurring roles on “Shameless,” “See Dad Run,” and “Good Luck Charlie.” What do you think of streaming services taking over prime time television? I think it’s brilliant so far, people love having options at their fingertips or binge watching. The fact that you can choose when, where and how to watch your favorite stars is pretty amazing. Being a part of successful series, you have also been nominated for awards yourself such as four Young Artist Awards: what is your secret to success? I don’t know that there is a secret but I do think you have to know that this is where you’re going to be. This particular idea is your passion and you jump in! How do you prepare for a role? I try not to think too much about it. I look at them as people and how that person/character would act and speak. I try to imagine what it would be like to be them and act accordingly. Tell me about your dream role. What would it be and in what kind of movie/series? Do you have a preferred genre? I’m living my dream! And every role that takes me in the direction of success is a dream. I’d love to have a chance at playing a dramatic role, a character with layers and depth but I also would love to do a high action movie, sci-fi zombies or a horror film- as you can see I just want to give my fans the best possible me.
