JULY 2018 In this issue we have the pleasure to welcome back SERAYAH - photographed by Arthur Galvao - who already graced the cover of BELLO back in November 2015. It was about time we caught up on whats new, including her latest music. Another obsession of ours this past few months has been the revolutionary first season of POSE on FX. A groundbreaking show exploring the ballroom scene of 1980’s NYC. One of the rising stars of the House of Evangelista is none other than RYAN JAMAAL SWAIN who - fun fact - sported a brand new arm cast in a really fun shoot styled by Luke Fntecha. The summer temperatures are rising with our model of the month, hunky rugby player turned model WILLIAM GOODGE. Along with fashion stories from around the globe. Hope you guys will enjoy this new issue as much as we enjoyed creating it. Ciao Aleksandar Tomovic

OFTENTIMES IN HOLLYWOOD THE LINE BETWEEN REALITY AND FICTION GETS BLURRED IN THE MOST EXCITING WAYS. SUCH IS THE STORY WITH EMPIRE STAR, SERAYAH. NOT ONLY DOES THE 23-YEAR-OLD STAR PORTRAY R&B SINGER, TIANA BROWN, ON THE HIT FOX SERIES, BUT NOW SHE'S A BONAFIDE R&B STAR IN REAL LIFE WITH HER NEW SINGLE AND MUSIC VIDEO "SO GOOD". BELLO WAS THRILLED TO CATCH UP WITH SERAYAH IN CHICAGO WHERE SHE HAD RECENTLY STARTED FILMING SEASON FIVE OF EMPIRE. Photography ARTHUR GALVAO Interview BRENT LAMBERT

"It means a lot to me to focus on my music during my EMPIRE hiatus," Serayah told us. "When I was creating 'So Good' it was just a really great vibe in the studio. There was me and a couple of writers (Akazi and Wade), and the producer Joe Black, and we were just vibing and having fun." She adds, "We were just having a great time, and that's what I wanted the video to reflect. I wanted the song to be something people could enjoy when they're getting ready to go out and have fun with their friends." With her own life now so closely mirroring the career of her character on EMPIRE, our chicken-and-the-egg curiosity was piqued: did Serayah the performing artist give rise to Tiana, or did Tiana the performing artist give rise to Serayah? "I definitely made Tiana happen in my own way," she says. "For example, my character wasn't even supposed to dance in the first season, but for the song 'Keep It Moving' I remember being in my hotel room and I made up some moves and the choreographer liked it and kept it. I definitely brought that to Tiana. They didn't know I could dance, and they were blown away. They've kept me dancing ever since." Currently in the early part of shooting season five of EMPIRE in Chicago, we asked Serayah, on a scale of 1-10, how accurate the show's representation of the hip hop entertainment industry is to that in real life. "I would say a 6/10. I feel like we take storylines that have been pulled from real life, whether it be from the characters or the celebrity gossip, but we definitely accentuate the drama. If it didn't have at least some element of truth to the portrayal of the industry I don't think it would be as entertaining to watch." With season five now filming, we wondered what new ground Serayah would love to explore in Tiana's life and soul if she was given carte blanche in the writing room. "I've always wanted to explore Tiana's

Bello

back story and see more intimate moments with her," Serayah tells us. "We always see her blowing up and getting mad, but we don't really know where it's coming from. Other characters get to explore that ground, so I feel like we could do the same for Tiana so we could have a better understanding of her journey."

plenty of time to discover her own set of Windy City favorite restaurants. "I really like Chicago Cut, an upscale steakhouse. It just opened and it's getting a big reputation, which it totally deserves -- it's so good! I also love Doc B's, it's more of a sports bar, and they have amazing ribs. And Harold's Chicken for sure."

As with any actor whose been immersed in their character's journey for years, that character can have a huge impact in shaping an actor's own personal life and development. We asked Serayah how Tiana Brown has influenced her own growth, and what she admires most about Tiana. "Definitely her confidence. Right from the gate Tiana has consistently exuded confidence, and it was something that was originally uncomfortable for me in the beginning -- from the clothes that she would wear, to the dances she would dance, to the way she was socially, and with her boyfriends and girlfriends. Playing Tiana really helped take me out of my comfort zone, and that's where the real magic happens." Serayah adds, "Until you're challenged, you don't really know if you can go there. So when you're forced to reach for it and just go, you discover new potential within yourself." Forcing herself out of her comfort zone has become a way of life for Serayah over the past five years. "For example," she says, "when I was filming my video for 'So Good' I was doing moves and splits that I would never do normally, and once I tapped into it it just started coming naturally. It often happens on set as well, such as today we're filming a scene and the choreographers are teaching me flamenco. It's a style I've never done, but now I'm doing it. I'm constantly learning new things on EMPIRE."

Serayah is well aware that 'all work and no play' is not a good life rule, so she makes sure to get the most that Chicago has to offer. "I'm going to make sure to see plenty of Chicago events. I'm going to Lollapalooza, which I'm excited about. Chicago has so many things to do so I want to do as much as I can before it gets cold!" And when it comes to the years ahead, we were curious where Serayah sees herself in ten years. "I see myself headlining tours, selling out shows, and being the lead in big budget films. Building my own empire, basically!"

Having spent so many years filming in Chicago and working up an appetite with all those countless hours of hard work, Serayah has had

Tell me more about your role in the new series “Pose.” Who do you play and does your character resemble who you are off camera? Damon is a young man from Allentown, PA who is kicked out of his home for being a dancer & being gay. He then finds himself discarded and dancing for money until Blanca comes in and helps him find his confidence and power as a human and artist. I think Damon and I share a lot of remarkable traits: integrity, passion, sensitive, & discernment. But what I believe is most important is courage. Courage to create and stand in the center of my truth. That’s true power. Damon is every dreamer who has been told that they can’t dream because of who they are & did it anyway and FINDING OUT THEIR POWER. We just received word that the show got picked up for Season 2. Congratulations! Tell us about your reaction / how you celebrated? So it was actually a day after having this amazing shoot with Bello. I was on my way to lunch with a friend and my team called me and usually when they call together it means I did something brilliant or something not so brilliant, ha. And then the flood of texts from family and friends. I just closed my eyes, did a silent non-audible scream and started dancing in the car, we did it, I thought. America is POSE’n with me and my cast now! From growing up in Alabama to studying in the U.K. and arriving to Hollywood, how would you describe your journey? What would you say you learned or grew as a person from experiencing those different cultures. I learned that the only one that will unlock your truth is you. No one else. If you are not ready to humble yourself to the work and be in service to the story - that’s masturbation. If you are willing and able to risk it all - you not ready. Alabama made me a man, the UK made me an artist truly, and Hollywood is making me a fighter. You wrote a one man show “A Negro Writer” in 2014: tell me what it is about. What inspired you to write it? Yes, no one ever asks about this. It’s actually something that I hold dear to my heart because it was the 1st time I felt in control of my journey. A Negro Writer explores the private life of world renowned writer Langston Hughes. I had just finished up a show about Mr Hughes at Howard University and his spirit permeated mine for a while. It takes a look at the man behind the pen which I was really fascinated by. We revere Mister Hughes with being the People’s Poet but no one really took a look at the man and I think there is much more to learn from the man than the idea of the man. Stories like those - the private life of someone intrigues me because you find inspiration through the struggles and the fight - not the polished spokesperson. Tell me how you transitioned from theater to television. Was it difficult to adapt? How did you prepare yourself differently for a role in theater and one in television and immediately launching into such a hit show. I believe nothing prepares you for the journey you will go on being apart of such a phenomenon such as POSE. Theatre is my first love and I believe it is the place in which you find your footing as an actor - a true artistic process. TV, is quick and immediate very much focused on the product and asks YOU to come with your process in tow. The transition is like any transition - bumpy a few times but I think what both of them require from you, the vessel, is to be open and eager to learn & ready always READY. Ha Besides your role as an actor, you are currently working on a children’s book based on a queer Southern teenager who is finding his way through life’s highs and lows. Why did you decide to make it a children’s book? I would go into stores and not see me represented in the stacks and that was problematic. I think why this show has been so prominent and powerful - is the fact that this is the first time people (and myself) have seen themselves in media. Also, with these swift changes happening in our political system this is the time to pick up and do the work. I want to see brown, yellow, red, purple, & oranges babies be told “I see you” that’s where I find my solitude and my power in helping others. If you could describe yourself in five words what would they be? Really only 5?!?! Alright, well- Impassioned. Daring. Metanoia. Dreamer. Discerning.

Bello It Guy

exclusive conversation with

BRANDON LARRACUENTE Photography LOWELL TAYLOR

interview by Alexandra Bonnet FROM ACTING IN PLAYS TO BEING IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA, BRANDON LARRACUENTE IS ON HIS WAY TO THE TOP. NEVER LETTING ANYONE STOP HIM FROM ACHIEVING HIS DREAMS, HE NOW APPEARS ON DIFFERENT NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES SUCH "BLOODLINE," "13 REASONS WHY" AND BRIGHT. THE TALENTED AND HANDSOME BRANDON LARRACUENTE IS SURE MAKING HEADS TURN AND WE AT BELLO CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHERE HE GOES NEXT!

As you played in “13 Reasons Why,” how would you describe your experience on the show? How did you prepare yourself before taking part of a story line that represents such big issues young adults face every day? Being a part of the show has been a life changing experience for me. It honestly wasn’t such a huge prep other than really knowing Jeff inside and out. The story-line was kept pretty secretive. I watched the show alongside everyone else and it had a huge impact on my awareness of how important mental health and being kind is. Being part of different Netflix original series such as “13 Reasons Why,” BRIGHT and “Bloodline”: what do you think of streaming services taking over prime time television? I find it a wonderful addition to an ever changing and growing industry. It is so convenient and offers so many more preferences of shows and movies to tune into. Growing up, did you always dream of becoming an actor? When and how did your acting career begin? Growing up, I hated acting. Not the craft itself but the backlash associated with being a male actor in a small town that didn’t really embrace huge dreams. Bello magazine is a style and lifestyle outlet. Tell us about your personal style. Do you have a favorite designer or type of outfit you like to wear? I am not opposed to being different. I’ll sometimes wear things that no one else would normally buy. Sometimes I’m on trend, sometimes I’m off trend. It really depends on my mood. Tell us about your first time ever acting. When you look back on that moment, how could you say you have evolved since? Did you learn any valuable lessons in the last few years? My first time acting was in a play called Carmen back in New Rochelle, NY. I would go to church every Sunday with my parents, sit right in the front row and belt out the songs. Eventually, the head of the choir, approached my parents asking them if I would like to be a part of a play. I was too young to know anything about acting at the time but I knew I had fun doing it. From then on, the passion continued growing. A valuable lesson I’ve learned is to appreciate the highs and the lows. During times of hiatus, instead of sitting around waiting for great news I delved into other things to keep me occupied and learned so much about myself. Like, my other passions, my strengths and my weaknesses. On top of that, I cherish that I’ve been able to spend more time talking to my loved ones. It’s been an incredible journey and I wouldn’t change a thing. Share with us who Brandon Larracuente is when not on camera. Do you have a favorite hobby and/or activity? When I’m not working, I’m taking my dog on a hike, going out to dinner, going to the gym, traveling or just taking some time for myself to disconnect for a bit. If you could be any movie character, who would you choose and why? I would be James Bond. Hands down. The man is a certified bad ass, travels the world on secret missions, and always gets the girl. Is there any book you have read that you would love for it to turn into a film to act in? I read a book called American Kingpin recently and it is pretty intense. Would love to work on that.
