NOVEMBER 2018 "How silently they tumble down And come to rest upon the ground To lay a carpet, rich and rare, Beneath the trees without a care, Content to sleep, their work well done, Colors gleaming in the sun. At other times, they wildly fly Until they nearly reach the sky. Twisting, turning through the air Till all the trees stand stark and bare. Exhausted, drop to earth below To wait, like children, for the snow." - Elsie N. Brady, Leaves November is one of those odd months when nature feels its energy being drained, and so do we. However, it is also when we should take the time to collect our thoughts, surround ourselves with the people we love, get done with all the work that’s left before the holidays, and yes, VOTE. BELLO might not be a politically heavy magazine but we try our hardest to inspire you to be a better you and to go out and be creative-self you know you can be; still, all that requires us to be part of a community, to be involved in the society we live in and to be aware of the political system that rules over us. Do not forget that right to vote is one of the biggest privileges and perks of a democracy, and we should NEVER take it for granted.
This issue is like Fall itself, an end to a cycle. Starting next issue we will start implementing some changes. Some of our favorite features will be coming back, we are going to be collaborating with even more creatives around the world, and more than anything, we are making BELLO the best version of the magazine we always wanted to make.
I hope you spend some time soaking up all the content in this issue, featuring the stunning and talented Katherine McNamara as our cover star. This photo shoot was long in the making, having first thought of the concept for this modern version of 60's French Icon the first time we worked together, over 4 years ago.
A lot has come and gone in those 4 years, but if there’s one thing we always strive to do here at Bello Media Group is to support and help each other grow, and we sincerely hope you do the same for your community and close group of friends and family. It’s time to make a change. Ciao Alek

Voltaire's famous words of wisdom, "With great power comes great responsibility," have not been lost on Katherine McNamara. The 22-year-old star of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments is the hardest working woman in showbiz, and understands that the world of Hollywood fantasy reaches far beyond entertainment, and has a powerful ability to shape the hearts and minds of fans both young and old. Hot off the news that her fans solidified her as a finalist for the E! People's Choice Awards being held on November 11, 2018, Katherine is also celebrating her recent addition to the season seven cast of Arrow. If gratitude was a superpower, then Katherine McNamara might be the most powerful star of all.

When it was announced in June that Shadowhunters would be ending after its third season, Freeform loaded up on the 'sweet' in the bittersweet news: the series would return in spring 2019 with two finale episodes to wrap up all loose ends in the story. "When we found out the show wasn't going to continue," Katherine tells us, "they gave us the opportunity to shoot a two-episode 'TV movie' to help wrap up the story, which was the biggest gift. We shot that in July and August and it will be airing early 2019." Although her time playing the role of Clary in the Shadowhunters family has come to an end, Katherine still beams about how honored she feels to have been part of the experience. "One of the biggest gifts of being with Shadowhunters -- and it's something I give the writers credit for -- is that every single woman on the show stands up for themselves, fights their own battles, and each is empowered in their own way." She adds, "And just as importantly, they are such a diverse range of women. What that does is show the next generation of young girls that strong, empowered, badass women are not of one stripe -- they are every woman." "I take my responsibility to my younger viewers very seriously," Katherine tells us. "I know when I was a little girl I wanted nothing more than to find a character like Clary to look up to, and characters in whose footsteps I could follow. I was lucky enough to be raised in a household of badass women who balanced career and family and were able to do it all. It was never a question of 'or' -- it was always a question of 'and'. You can be anything you want to be, no matter what society says, and if you work hard enough."
9
Katherine's towering work ethic is well known amongst her Shadowhunters team, who worked closely with her through the years to craft the physical dimension of her character Clary. "Although I've been a dancer my whole life, when I began work on Shadowhunters I didn't know how to throw a punch or hold a sword. I didn't know what I was doing. With Clary I was immediately thrown into the fire, and we had an amazing team of stunt professionals and stunt doubles. They were world class martial arts experts and teachers, and they were always there to teach us any time we wanted to take time to learn, so I never missed an opportunity!" If Katherine's strong family lineage of amazing women forged her soul and spirit, then her Shadowhunters stunt team helped teach her how to channel that inner strength through her body's outer strength and turn it into brute, acute force. "I have the utmost respect for my stunt team. They're not only massively talented, but also the most amazing people. By season two of Shadowhunters I was doing 95% of my own stunts and fighting. I worked closely with my stunt team and they showed me how to fight and how to move. It was such a huge gift and it changed my world. Now I'm such a gym rat, I love working out, and martial arts and boxing have become one of my biggest passions. Now with Arrow I get to continue my boxing and fighting skills in a whole new universe." In Arrow, Katherine plays Maya, a fearless, streetsmart fighter who comes from life in an underground fight club. "Maya's been raised in a really tough environment, so she's a product of that," Katherine explains. "She's not one to be intimidated, and not one to be messed with. It makes it fun for me as an actor because my character of Clary in Shadowhunters started out as very much an in-

nocent, hopeful, optimistic person. Maya, on the other hand, is the antithesis of Clary. She's seen the dark side and she's been forged by it. She's one to punch first and ask questions later." Katherine's tough-as-nails fighting prowess is perfectly balanced by her altruistic spirit, and a moral compass that's been supercharged by her upbringing surrounded by so many women of grace in her own family. Arrow follows the story of billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), a man with unlimited financial resources who has devoted his life to fighting crime and corruption with his own bare, vigilante hands. We asked Katherine what she thinks she would devote her life purpose to if money was no longer an object. "I would devote a good portion of my life to many different things," she tells us. "Rather than devoting myself to hooded vigilante justice like Oliver in Arrow, I would prefer to build schools, and try and make a difference in people's lives by helping them lay the foundation for a strong future -- especially for people who might not otherwise have had access to resources, opportunities, and safety. There are so many folks who don't have the opportunity to live the life that they want to, and are instead focused strictly on survival." Katherine adds, "I would also want to devote some of my time to telling stories that hold up a mirror to society and force us to ask questions about how we can make the human experience a better one for everybody."
self. How perfectly fitting it is, then, that Katherine was born on Thanksgiving. "I'm a turkey baby, so every eleven years Thanksgiving falls on my birthday (the fourth Thursday of November), and this year happens to be one of those years!" Getting to celebrate her birthday and Thanksgiving at the same time each year has naturally become one of her favorite annual traditions. "It makes it so much fun -- I always joke because I get to have cake AND pie (laughing)! It's just a goofy, fun, playful day and I get to spend time with the people I love the most. It really is my favorite holiday. It's so simple and pure and not bogged down by commercialization. It's a holiday built on gratitude, and it means the world to me." The two-part series finale of Shadowhunters will air in spring 2019. New episodes of Arrow air Monday nights at 8/7c on the CW and stream free the next day.
In talking with Katherine, one quickly becomes aware of how thankful she is for the beautiful life the Universe has allowed her to create for her-

We just saw the first episode of the new season of "Midnight, Texas", and it's off to an amazing start. How was the experience of shooting this second season? I’ve been told this season is sexy, scary and sassy... so... Let me know what you think! As far as filming goes, I found New Mexico to be a magical place to film. It’s a very rough environment, so I discovered that to live and work there, actually forced me to new levels of self care. Drinking lots of water, taking vitimins, getting extra hours of sleep and spending time in nature enjoying all the elements to decompress from set. For this particular job, the cast and I would often talk about filming like we’re athletes, not actors. I think there’s something special about that. Athletes are connected to their bodies in a different way. So it forced me to care for mine in a way that maybe I wouldn’t have before, for this character. As for Olivia, I remember Eric and Nicole (our show runners) saying to me... well this season is all about healing for Olivia. And I gulped. I don’t think I was ready to hear that. I loved how tough Olivia was but also how much anger and pain she hid behind her strength, in season 1. Hearing it was time to heal felt jarring for both me and Olivia! And as it turns out, I see now, that it was the best thing for both of us. I loved the journey this season. What is it like working with your co-star, Arnaud? He’s an Incredibly talented actor who’s also become a friend. He cares so much about his character and Midnight and is constantly making sure everything is authentic to “Manny.” I love watching his possession scenes - especially when he is a lady. He nails it. Plus, he has a huge heart. He was one of the first people to check in with me when my sister went missing and he always finds ways to compliment me and our cast on scenes well done. He’s a true leading man. You felt really comfortable on the set of our photo shoot. How would you describe your personal fashion style? First of all, thank you for a wildly fun photoshoot. You gave me creative freedom to play and I loved it. As far as my fashion style, it’s whatever I’m feeling in the moment. Sounds silly but if you look at pictures of me over the years, I’m quite a camillion. I enjoy going from farm girl to edgy fashion forward at the drop of a dime. I think that’s part of why I’m actress. Growing up doing some modeling taught me right away how to play with different characters in different environments. The past two years have been immensely important for social changes on all fronts in the United States. How important do you find this period to be for our future? It’s the most important thing happening today. We are living through a moment in time that our children will study in history and either say, “Why did they do that?” or “Thank God they changed that.” I also believe the next generation is full of light and potential and is already teaching us so much about activism and the power of using one’s voice.

With the awareness the #meTOO movement brought to the forefront of worldwide media, it must be important to be aware of who you surround yourself with in Hollywood. Does this influence the choice of people you have been working with? Absolutely. However, I wouldn’t close it off to the #metoo movement. It definitely shed light on inequality in the workplace and how degraded most women are on a daily - and minute to minute - basis. But I have to admit, I’ve always been picky about who I work with. I can’t say I’ve always liked everyone I’ve worked with, but I can say it’s taught me how to stand up for myself. How to protect my work. And how to shed light on the environment around me, while I work. For those lessons, although not easy at times, I’m thankful. And I’m grateful that the #metoo movement brought these issues to the forefront of our workspace. It made it easier and more “acceptable” to say ‘NO’ with force instead of ‘NO’ with a giggle. The f*cking giggle... I’m done making someone else feel comfortable for their inappropriate behavior by giggling my way out of the situation. Ladies, ya heard?!? And gentlemen ... ya heard?!? What is next for you ? I’m very excited about my podcast with my bestie, Sterling Jones, called “Spiritualgasm.” That’s right, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Our logline is, ‘We do everything together but each other.’ We want to bring laughter and healing to people listening the way we do for each other as best friends. I’m also thrilled to be a part of Eva Longoria’s new show on ABC called, “Grand Hotel.” I play Sky Garibaldi, the head chef of the hotel who goes missing. The fantastic Lincoln Younes plays my brother on the show and disguised himself as hotel staff, to find out what happened to me. The show is sexy and fun and it’s turning out to be quite the “who done it show.” In more ways than one.

You recently starred in the film Assassination Nation, tell us about your character Donny’s and his role in the film. Donny is a pretty crazy dude! You perceive him to be a normal, quiet kid but he's very calculating... I think in the end it shows that he's a complete sociopath who gets enjoyment from the chaos he causes to the town of Salem. The film starred a lot of many young Hollywood talents and social media influencers, how prevalent has the role of social media been in your life? Working with the cast was an amazing experience! Odessa and Hari are 2 of the cast members that I got to spend the most time with and I really learned a lot from them! Social media and I have had sort of a love/hate relationship but I've definitely realized the importance and the benefits of having a strong presence on social media and I hope to continue to build a strong following. I think it's important for people to see actors on screen but also to be able to relate and connect. Outside of acting, tell us about another passion project you have? I'm a huge fan of martial arts, gymnastics end especially the sport of tricking. I love finding cool spots to do flips and I spend as much free time as possible practicing at trampoline parks and connecting with other trickers. You spent a good part of your day shooting with Bello Mag, a fashion and lifestyle magazine, tell us about your personal style. Shooting with Bello was super cool! I would say my style is casual, jeans and one of my favorite band t-shirts, like the Chili Peppers. But getting to wear the clothes I wore for the Bello shoot was incredible. I think my style will continue to evolve.

Tell us how you got into acting, if anything had been different, what else would you be doing? I started acting when I was a kid growing up in New York. My mom was a dancer and auditioned often so she sort of got me involved in doing photo shoots for toys and stuff when I was a baby. When we moved to New Orleans, I took a long break from acting and started auditioning again when I was about 13. From that moment, I just knew that I wanted to be on set as much as possible. I honestly don't know what I'd be doing if not for acting... Maybe trying to discover a new planet. I'm sort of fascinated with astronomy. Favorite holiday and why? I don't really get into holidays very much. I guess I would have to say Thanksgiving because I usually get to spend time with some of my family that I don't get to see very often. And who doesn't love leftovers! What’s your favorite film of the early 2000, did any of them inspire you to become an actor? Does 1998 count? I think Good Will Hunting is one of my all time favs. I'm not sure it inspired me to become an actor but I think an actor like Robin Williams continues to inspire many actors to pursue their dreams. He definitely inspires me. I would say Stand by Me is my second fav. Is there a random fact of yours most people don't know? I'm a huge animal rights activist and a have been a vegetarian for about 3 years now. I'm focused on converting to strict veganism in the near future. And I'm a black belt in Taekwondo.

How do you incorporate women's advocacy in your work? It seems simple, but the biggest thing that I do is use my voice. I call out the things that aren't right, even when I'm terrified or I know I'll be harshly judged. I also incorporate as many women as possible into my business. I am a female music producer. Only about 5% of music producers are women. The music industry is extremely far behind in terms of gender equality. I put out an entire mixtape that I produced by myself to show other girls that it was possible for them, too. It sounds small, but even just having another girl to look up to in a male dominated field is powerful for us. I also believe that all of us are connected, so any time that we choose to love ourselves better or value ourselves more, we don't just bless ourselves. We are also blessing all women.
MUSIC
How would you categorize your music style? I try not to box myself in too much but my focus is making really anthemic pop that's got alternative sounds and massive choruses. My writing partners and I create all of my work with a live audience in mind because I want my show to be really exciting and special for my fans.

When do you find yourself the most inspired? It’s always changing, honestly. Lately I've been really inspired listening to the alternative radio stations in LA while I drive to the studio. There's so many amazing bands I've never heard of that are doing unique stuff. My other favorite station for inspiration is the 70's pop station. I love hearing what they thought was cool in their era.

Tell us about how you stand up for other women on your blog “Emmpowerment”? My hope is that by openly speaking on my struggles and stories, other women are reminded that they aren't alone. I am desperate to remind women of their own glory and strength and power. I want to see my fans love themselves completely and without shame or any feeling of unworthiness. I care about them so much. The idea that there are girls out there with eating disorders or dealing with with abuse completely breaks my heart. I don't have it completely figured out yet but I'll take any chance I get to remind them how insanely loved and valuable they are. 67
On your Instagram you have a post about the greatness in the word “Bitch,” please tell us about your thoughts on this. I hate the word "bitch" because it's so derogatory and so often full of hatred. I made that post to remind girls that every great woman in history was vilified and called names at certain points. And it was often because people were threatened by a woman that truly loved herself and wasn't afraid to speak her beautiful mind. So if you've got someone calling you a "bitch" just because you walk with your head held high, you are in excellent company.

What is the biggest goal that you want to accomplish as a musician? I have so many goals. Right now, my most important goal is to stay focused on enjoying my journey without getting distracted by anything external. It can be tempting to get caught up in numbers and the business and I don't want to forget to enjoy the process. Skirt: MISTERTRIPLE X Top: ONE TRIEU YEU
If you could collaborate with any musician in the world, who would it be? Theres so many amazing people that I hope to work with. Coldplay is at the top of my list, though. You grew up in a small town in Michigan and have traveled all over the US with your music. What do you wish you could tell your younger self about what you have accomplished today? I actually think about that a lot. I wish I could hug my younger self and just tell her to keep going and that she's doing a great job. I think she would think I'm a badass. And that makes me really happy. I'd probably be the most excited for my younger self just to hear all the music we've made because it's so incredible. I know I would of freaked out and loved it.

The song “Freedom was released today. You explained that the song is about a child relationship to an addict parent. Where did you get the inspiration for the song, and what would want your fans to get from it? I’ve had a lot of friends that have faced the challenge of having to be the adult in their relationship with their parent for various reasons. I thought it was really important to tell their stories because that is so difficult and so many of us go through it. Those kids deserve so much praise and admiration for being so strong and it's rarely given to them. I hope that any of my fans who are experiencing something similar to the character in Freedom can take comfort in knowing that they're not alone. And it doesn't make you weak to have a broken heart over your parents. I hope it helps them cope with their situation and be reminded that they aren't defined by the failures of their parents.
