FEBRUARY 2019 Are we there yet? February may be the shortest month of the year but do not let it fool you, especially with Saint Valentine's day “sweetening” things up. It’s definitely one of the most difficult times of the year and by far my least favorite month. Let's start by the fact that it's not winter wonderland anymore, but it’s also not spring yet. And then there’s all the New Moon talk. Oh, and Chinese New Year. Summing up: It's an energy draining month. NETLIX was definitely a cozy getaway throughout the month with nice surprises like The Umbrella Academy, and we are so happy to feature in this issue Number 03 aka Emmy Raver as our Spotlight cover. We also watched HEAL and recently started watching One Strange Rock, two documentaries that will give you new perspectives on life and our planet. Diva Brides is also another must watch for (entirely) different reasons. Our main cover is Modern Family star Ariel Winter. It was recently announced that the series will come back for its final and 11th season in 2020. We always loved this show and saw some of the cast members become young adults like Nolan Gould who was featured on the cover of BELLO in December 2018. We wanted to show Ariel under a new light. She was photographed by our very own Editor in Chief Aleksandar Tomovic right here in Los Angeles. In other magazine news, we have announced ealier this month the lauch of a new magazine MARKER ZINE that will focus on California culture and lifestyle through the eyes of watch collectors so make sure to stay tuned for more, and enjoy exclusive shoots and sneak peeks of what's to come on @themarkerzine instagram. Love to all. Stephane Marquet BELLO mag creative Director.

After a stress-filled week also riddled with unusually cold weather, I decided to unwind on Friday with binge-watching the end of the most recent season of Modern Family. Like other fans of the series, I have always been drawn to the spunk of Alex Dunphy. Luckily, I was able to have a conversation with Ariel Winter, the actress that brings Alex to life on the show. For the Modern Family star, some of the most important aspects of life are the simpler ones: comfort, finding joy (as well as humor) in the small things, and not being too hard on yourself. To start, I wanted to know what similarities exist between Alex and Ariel, if there were any. She told me about how they are both “pretty sarcastic” and believe in the importance of education. “There’s not a ton of differences.” Ariel did point out, with a laugh, that the “main difference” between them is that she doesn’t “wear as many flannels” as Alex. While her role as Alex is what she is most known for, Ariel also has plenty of experience with voice acting projects including a princess named Sofia in Disney Channel’s Sofia the First. Since she has had years working in both realms, I sought to find out if there was anything about voice acting she enjoyed more than her live action works. Ariel described how, with voice acting, she gets to “see a character that someone draws come to life on the screen” which is a more unique experience than live action acting. One of the main perks, as Ariel excitedly told me, is that “with voice acting you don’t have to get all dressed up. You could be in your pajamas. You could just be out of the shower with your hair in a bun and that part’s pretty awesome.”

Bello

Even when she is not voice acting, Ariel loves to stay comfortable with her choice of clothing from day to day. When asked about her personal style, she described to me how, normally, she does not stress too much about putting outfits together because she goes for “anything [she] can find that is comfortable and possibly matching.” She recounted to me how, in addition to “heeled boots,” one of her wardrobe staples would definitely be “legging pants because I’m super into comfy.” Throughout our conversation, the emphasis on being comfortable was prominent. For Ariel, this extends beyond style. Ariel wants everyone to experience the joy of comfortability, including animals in their environments. When I transitioned the topic of conversation from her career to more personal goals she disclosed to me that a goal she is working towards is “trying to get every sheltered dog in the world adopted.” Eventually, she explained, she “would like to buy a lot of land somewhere and make my own animal shelter.” She went on to how, more specifically, she would want her personal shelter to house dogs that have been in shelters for more than a year, so these dogs could experience a more comfortable environment while waiting to be placed in a forever home. This focus on being comfortable does not just end with environment and style, but within each person. When Ariel was asked what advice she would give her younger self she said, “To stop being so judgmental of myself” which is a piece of advice I think we should all heed, especially when it can be easy to internalize insecurities with all the negativity whirling around in the social media driven world

issue #181

we live in. While there can be an onslaught of unpleasantness in the media, her family keeps her inspired. “There are a lot of people that inspire me and there are a lot of amazing people in the industry. But I’d say probably people who are not in the industry inspire me more, like family members.” Another way to lead a more positive lifestyle is to find the joy in the smaller, more mundane things. This can be anything from appreciating particularly wonderful weather on any given day to, in Ariel’s case, enjoying your favorite board game. Ariel revealed to me that, when she is not working, she is playing Settlers of Catan. “It’s kind of taken over my life.” For those of you that are not familiar, Settlers of Catan is a multiplayer board game centered around monopolizing an area through the utilization of strategy. Even though it is a multiplayer game, Ariel finds a way to play when there is not anyone available to join her. “When no one wants to play with me I play on the app with robots” which she told me might be “mildly embarrassing” to admit but that it does not matter because she enjoys playing so much. To conclude my time speaking with Ariel, I wanted to know what she is most excited for in 2019. “I want to work more this year on different things.” Ariel explained how she wants to branch out and discover new things she likes. She has big dreams for the future and will, undoubtedly, achieve them due to her hardworking, determined nature.

EMMY RAVER PHOTOGRAPHY ROCH ARMANDO

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY's Written by Sam Spotswood Questions by Carl Tienabeso

With the frigid rain still threatening Angelenos, cuddling up with a new Netflix original seems like the only rational thing to do. Umbrella Academy, an exciting new superhero series, offers the perfect escape from the soggy outside. On one such evening in Los Angeles, we got to speak with Emmy Raver-Lampman, a talented actress who made her big break starring as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton and who currently stars as Alison Hargreaves in Umbrella Academy. Of her character, Emmy said, “I think Alison is this fierce, fiery, independent, strong woman that I’ve just so enjoyed getting to know and bringing to life. She was the only daughter of the family that went out and fought crime with her brothers and had to run drills and run just as fast and be just as strong. I think that is such an awesome, awesome part to get to play.” Emmy noted that among each of the characters she’s played, Alison bears the most resemblance to herself in terms of personality. “I think she definitely has her weaknesses and her vulnerability and all of those things, but I think she has this unbelievably nurturing soul and independent spirit, and those are two things that I instantly connected to when I was reading the script and when figuring out how I wanted to bring her to life. I think she is the most like me of any part that I’ve ever, ever gotten to play. She’s an elevated, heightened version of me--absolutely-and has a very damaged childhood, and is married, and has a child, and also has superpowers which is something that I can’t even begin to relate to. But, I think her soul is one that I understand, I think the most.” Unlike Alison, Emmy did not grow up with a tumultuous childhood. Rather, her

23

parents, who are both college professors, completely supported her aspirations of becoming an actress, something Emmy is extremely grateful for. “I think the second that they realized how important it was to me, they stood behind me and have seen every single thing that I have done a million times and have spent countless hours in New York seeing me in my shows and travelling to random cities that I was touring on.” In addition to her parents, Emmy received massive support from her mentors and teachers along her journey to stardom. “I think every experience, you pick up another person who gives you strength and courage and their belief in you and your ability and what you’re bringing to the table. You kind of add that person to the backpack of people that you have in your corner.” Each acting experience Emmy’s had has been a versatile one, as she’s acted in live theater, film, and television, appreciating each experience for its own merits. “I kind of love and enjoy all of them, it’s not a ‘Which one do I prefer?’ I think it’s a matter of what role is exciting me at the moment. And they’re all very different mediums and different ways of being an actor, but I enjoy them all. It’s really hard, it’s like asking someone to pick their favorite child! I really love it all because it pulls different things out of me.” Every one of Emmy’s unique acting experiences allows her to fully flaunt her creativity to her audience. However, off camera and off the stage, Emmy continues to flex her creative side, often taking up crafts on set. “I also love crafts. I had a jewelry line on Etsy for a while, and I love making macrame wall hangings, and I knit. I love painting, and I always kind of need to keep my hands busy. I’m usu-

February 2019

ally on set knitting a scarf or doing some Mandala coloring books or making a wall hanging or painting a canvas or finding some craft or something ridiculous to make that my boyfriend is constantly rolling his eyes at.” In addition to embracing challenging, vastly different acting roles, Emmy enjoys novelty in her free time. “I love to travel, traveling is my number one, just to get away and clear my mind and explore a new city and new culture, a new cuisine, new people, and new ways of living.” Luckily for Emmy, her acting career has been characterized by travel, as she’s worked everywhere from New York, the west coast, and Toronto for various projects. She had a difficult time picking her favorite location, though, since being able to completely experience the city is extremely important to her. Upon being asked her favorite location, Emmy said, “Hmmm...it’s so funny because like I feel like until I have done theater, a movie, and TV in all 3 of those places, I feel like I can’t make a proper judgement!” With her flourishing career, we asked Emmy what she hopes for the rest of 2019. “Nothing would make me happier than to know that we’re going to get a second season of The Umbrella Academy and to continue my work in that show and to continue Alison’s journey and the journey of the Hargreaves family--that would be so incredible! I would love to do a movie. I think getting the opportunity to dig deep into another character, into another awesome woman that I would get to portray, that would be really fun.”

DARREN MANN

DARREN MANN, WHO STARS AS LUKE IN NETFLIX’S CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA, IS STEPPING INTO A NEW, DARING ROLE IN GIANT LITTLE ONES, COMING OUT MARCH 1ST 2019. IN THIS COMING OF AGE FILM, DARREN ACTS ACROSS SEASONED INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS AND SKILLFULLY DISPLAYS HIS ACTING CHOPS AS HE BRINGS TO LIFE BALLAS KOHL, A TEENAGE BOY STRUGGLING TO ESTABLISH HIS IDENTITY. WE GOT TO SIT DOWN WITH DARREN TO ASK HIM HOW HE FELT ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE IN THIS CHALLENGING ROLE, HIS GOALS FOR THE FUTURE, AND HOW PLAYING BALLAS KOHL CONTRIBUTED TO HIS OVERALL WORLDVIEW.

With Giant Little Ones premiering March 1st, how did you enjoy your role playing Ballas Kole in the film and what is something that you learned about yourself portraying him? As soon as I read Giant Little Ones, I knew playing Ballas was a special opportunity that I needed to make happen. Unfortunately, well rounded, layered characters can be tough to come by in this age bracket, so getting to play Ballas was a special opportunity for me to flex my range and skills. How would you describe the relationships you’ve created with your cast mates during the production of Giant Little Ones? It was an extremely special group of castmates and crew that Keith and Allison put together to make this film. I created lifelong friendships with both castmates and crew members. It was the most beautifully run, cohesive set that I have ever been a part of, and I think that has had a direct correlation to the film’s success. How important do you think cinema still is in our current political and social landscape? I think it’s a great way to open people’s minds and possibly change people’s perspectives on many relevant topics. I think it would only be beneficial if more people were exposed to the beautiful stories that “art house” and “indie films” often possess. What are some of the goals you’ve set for yourself in the future? In acting and other outside opportunities? To be at peace in whatever I am doing and to keep pursuing opportunities that fuel my creativity. You’re also in one of the biggest hits of the past year on Netflix; how does it feel to be in such different cinematic formats? Do you like one more than the other? Film is a where my heart is, but I think there are some really fantastic shows out there these days that give us the same cinematic qualities. It’s also great how we’re now seeing a lot more crossover with actors going back and forth from one to the other. I think TV can offer an actor a nice sense of stability. What would you like your character in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to do/be like in parts to come? I think there is a great sense of mystery with Luke. I’m sure many fans would love answers to what Luke is all about and what he’s been up to. So hopefully his layers will be peeled back in the near future. As you may know, Bello Mag is a fashion and lifestyle magazine. How would you describe your clothing style? Having the background of an athlete, I would describe my clothing style as urban/sporty. I like to look good, but I’m not interested in putting in a lot of effort. I also always want to be comfortable, and anything that doesn’t make me feel good wearing is getting donated.

exclusive conversation with PHOTOGRAPHY TYLER ROWELL

LIANA RAMIREZ

AT JUST 20 YEARS OLD, STARLET LIANA RAMIREZ HAS DABBLED IN FILM AND TELEVISION ACTING. ALREADY APPEARING IN PRODUCTIONS BY DISNEY, CBS, AND NETFLIX, LIANA CONTINUES TO SHARE HER STORYTELLING TALENTS IN HER ROLE AS ROXY IN THE UPCOMING SEASON OF POWER RANGERS BEAST MORPHERS. WE SPOKE WITH LIANA, ASKING HER ABOUT HER CURRENT ROLE AS ROXY, AS WELL AS HER FUTURE GOALS, LITERARY ASPIRATIONS, AND MORE.

Power Rangers first debuted to American audiences in 1993. While each season is different, how does it feel to be on that show that has run for so long? It feels amazing! As an actor, it’s a dream come true to be cast on a show with an already existing fan base, and these fans are the most welcoming, passionate people in the world. It really is wild to be a part of a legacy that is older than I am, and I can’t believe I am contributing my talents to it. I truly feel like I hit the jackpot! Did you watch Power Rangers as a kid? Did this influence your decision to take on the role of Roxy? I actually didn’t watch it as a kid, but I knew what it was, of course, and I am a sucker for action films and TV shows, so that was why I was attracted to the show and my role of Roxy. The opportunity to do my own action and stunts was one of the biggest influences of why I took the role. I just LOVE stunts… like a lot. How did you prepare to take on such a character like Roxy? Is playing a villain a challenging role? My preparation for the role began with actually auditioning for the Yellow Ranger. I trained everyday for 4 months on perfecting martial art forms, fight choreography, and the audition sides. It was a super challenging audition process that ended with casting offering me a different role, “Roxy” the devious evil female Ranger. And honestly, Roxy came very naturally to me. I think once I figured out her body language, everything else fell into place and it’s been a breeze to play her for two seasons. How was it to get to know your co-stars? Oh my gosh, my co-stars! Getting to know them was CRAZY! I mean we were literally thrown into a group together and moved across the world to make a TV show when we barely knew each other's names. We got to know each other by filming and living together. It was the wildest and most full-on experience of my life. But I would not want to do it with any other group of people, because they are the most fun, outgoing, passionate, professional, caring group of people I have ever worked with. I feel so blessed and thankful to call them my castmates and now family. We read that you are also very much interested in being a writer. What made you want to jump into the literary world? Growing up, I’ve always been infatuated with stories, especially the ones that made me feel like I could take on the world, be adventurous, and made me dare to believe in myself. I realized I wanted to create something like that and move people with my stories in hopes of inspiring others to go after their dreams and that’s one of the biggest reasons why I wrote my upcoming novel The Secrets Within Me. It’s a YA action adventure novel that I am releasing this summer, and I cannot contain my excitement about it! I truly hope people enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it! How would you describe your acting style? I would say my acting style is me, Liana, finding a version of myself in every character I play—even the crazy ones. I feel the most authentic this way, and I strive to give the most authentic performances I can.

How would you describe your writing style? A: My writing style is very similar to authors who write in the young adult genre. I know it’s very cliche to say, but J.K. Rowling truly is my favorite author, my biggest writing inspiration, and I hope to be on shelves next to her one day. So far, I think I am doing a pretty good job, and I am excited to see my writing improve in the upcoming years. Do they somehow influence each other? I see my stories like movies now because I am an actress. When I am visualizing a scene, I literally see it on the big screen and it helps me figure out how the characters will interact, what words will be said, and how the whole story should be put together. I think being both a writer and an actress has only benefited my skills in both areas. How would you describe your journey as an actress to where you are now? What is your goal for this year? My journey has been extremely difficult. I moved to LA when I was fourteen with my family to pursue a dream where I thought I would instantly make it big. I quickly realized that’s not how Hollywood works. You have to pay your dues going to hundreds and hundreds of auditions only to be rejected hundreds of hundreds of times. There were multiple times I questioned if my dreams were ever going to become reality. But then after an insane amount of hard work, I booked Power Rangers and I feel like I have climbed Mount Everest. And I only want to go up from here. So, I would say my goal for 2019 when I move back to LA is to work on some incredible studio feature films. That would be the absolute dream! As you may know, Bello Mag is a fashion and lifestyle magazine. How would you describe your clothing style? Oooo! My style makes me laugh. I feel like I am a combination of super lazy, comfortable, girly and badass. On a normal day, I will just wear t-shirts and leggings around my house. When I go out, I usually am in overalls and converse with my hair in a wannabe Ariana Grande ponytail. But if I was getting really fancy, nothing would make me happier if I could walk around in a sequin dress, heels and a leather jacket. OH! That’s heaven for me. What is something viewers may not know about you?

SHIRT: barking IRONS @barkingironsny SKIRT: English Clientele Collection @englishclientele

Fun things about me—I love super sweet coffee, I dance around my room a lot, I prefer sitting on the floor vs. chairs, I have an obsession with black cats, and I am a proud Slytherin. On a more serious note, I am a super hard worker, and if there is anything people should know about me, it is that I will never give up on my dreams no matter how long it takes me!

The multifunctional ARCONA CELESTIAL ACTIVATING ESSENCE that hydrates and improves your skin’s elasticity. When used in the daylight, the liquid will help blur fine lines and imperfections. The essence includes Camomile and Green Tea that helps protect against environmental factors and impurities. Lastly, the essence is cruelty-free and paraben-free! www.arcona.com

Protect and care for the ones you love. And who do you spend the most time with? Your phone! Bello received CASERY’s amazing marble collection made in LA and designed with a sleek back hard shell and slim fit for your phone’s ultimate protection. Since your phone spends a lot of time in your hand and isn’t cheap dress it as the accessory it is. Casery promises that the phone has been drop tested and is "anti-scratch" so treat your phone as a child, an investment and your best friend who won’t tell your secrets! You know…unless you get hacked. www.thecasery.com

It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone to know that climate change is real and now that LA is colder than ever, we finally need sweaters. It never gets as cold as 32 DEGREES, obviously, but if it ever did, we’d stick to using 32 degrees clothing. And after a day out in the cold, we can't wait to slip into the fuzzy sherpa half snap pullover hoodie.

There are two people in this world: Those that like to carry a brick of a case and those that like slim, phone hugging phone covers. If you like the latter, then CASELY is for you. Not only are their covers slim with a perfect fit for an iPhone’s button, but it comes in a number of amazing designs. www.getcasely.com

Lets face it, everyone has a pair of sunglasses we wear for EVERYTHING (even if it clashes) but CHIMI has the answer to that! Literally every pair we can think of comes in each shade, color and shape. Clash no more….unless that’s your thing. #own
