Sam Spotswood Writer I happily binged eight hours of The Act on Hulu in preparation for a killer interview with Calum Worthy, who was absolutely incredible to speak with. I used this expertise to choose the best streaming picks for this month, in addition to using my small, yet finely tuned ears to identify the best music
CONTRIBUTORS
picks.
Being amongst the millions of die-hard fans who tuned into the season 8 premiere of Game of Thrones, the character relationships, and breathtaking storylines left many of us clamoring at our seats in anticipation for what's to come.
Writer
Rylie Kyhn Writer Before I even got the chance to speak with her, I watched her in action on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina performing in her powerful role as Madam Satan so I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit nervous for the interview. I soon learned that the incredibly talented Michelle Gomez is quite the opposite of the character that she plays so I was in awe a bit at how she transformed herself. Despite stating that she doesn't believe she is that funny, she is actually hilarious and had me laughing the entire interview while truly amazing me at how humble and down to earth, she is.

Picture this: your plane lands after a fairly conventional flight, just with a bit more turbulence than you are used to. Upon arrival, you are told that your plane has been missing for five and a half years and all of your loved ones believed you were gone forever. However, you and everyone else that was on your flight haven’t aged a day. This is the basis for the NBC series, Manifest, that premiered last September. Michaela Stone, played by the incredibly talented Melissa Roxburgh, is one of the leading roles alongside Josh Dallas, that is forced to navigate through this unexpected, and unexplainable, crisis. I had the pleasure of speaking with Melissa about all things Manifest, inspiration, and more. Roxburgh knew she wanted to act from a very early age, noting, “I wanted to get into the industry ever since I was young. I was that crazy kid who stole my mom’s home video camera and forced all of my siblings to be in my horrible movies that were about absolutely nothing at the end of the day but I thought they were genius at the time. [My parents] forced me to finish high school which I thank them for. It was really a drama teacher in grade eleven that encouraged me that I could do it as a career. That’s when it dawned on me that I loved it and I could be good at it. Thankfully, I fell into the lap of this acting coach who became one of my best friends and she poured encouragement into me.” Little did she know that years later she would be part of a project as unique as Manifest. Manifest’s unparalleled narrative and character writing is what drew Roxburgh to the role of Michaela Stone. “I read the role
13
and for me the concept itself was something that I hadn’t seen before. It was written in a way where it wasn’t so far out of the realm of possibility. The way that [Jeff Rake, creator] had written it was so grounded in these characters that seemed so real with what they were going through, the way they spoke to each other, and the way they dealt with situations.” As for the role of Michaela, specifically, “She was not an idea of a strong character. In fact, she was pretty much the opposite of a strong character but underneath all the flaws they wrote into her, you can see her trying and I thought that was refreshing.” Roxburgh’s interest in Michaela’s character was heightened when she realized just how many similarities they shared. “We’re alike in a lot of ways. She was raised in a religious household and my dad’s a pastor. I can relate to her on that front of not being so sure where you stand with your faith, especially given all the failure you’ve had in your life and feeling pressure from your parents to be better.” Roxburgh could even relate to Michaela’s sibling dynamic on the show saying, “She’s a second child in the show and I’m a second child in real life so living under your older sibling’s shadow was definitely something that hit home for me. I liked that she’s a flawed, but trying character. I can definitely relate, as we all can, to the fact that you keep messing up in life but you really are just trying to do better and be better.” While she has found points of similarity between her and Michaela that helped with connecting to the role, playing the part has had its challenges. “It’s the first time I’ve ever

been a lead on a TV show and so off-camera I’ve learned a lot there. The head cast has to uphold energy and uphold the integrity of the show to the crew and to everyone around them and also take care of themselves at the same time. That’s been a really exciting challenge for me.” Through these challenges, Roxburgh expressed her gratitude towards her co-star and on-screen brother, Josh Dallas. “Josh Dallas has been through all of [this] before. He’s been the best co-star to have because he’s really been the older brother that I never had. He’s taught me a lot.” Being so well versed in the entertainment industry by this point in her career, I sought to find out what Roxburgh’s advice would be to other aspiring actors or, possibly, her younger self. “My advice would be to stay innocent. I think that you forget the wide-eyed version of yourself that just looks at the world very specifically, in a way that’s just wonder and excitement and curiosity. I think that you forget that part a little bit just with the business side of the industry.” While her successful career keeps her extremely busy, Roxburgh makes sure to take the time to do the other things she is passionate about. “I’m from Vancouver, Canada and there’s a lot of hikes there. I try and find something outdoorsy in whatever city I’m in. I love getting up to the peak of somewhere to look over a city. It helps me find a little bit of peace. I’m a runner as well. I love running. Honestly, with working so much, it is nice to just hang out with friends and do things like bowling or grabbing dinner.” In addition, Roxburgh has ambitious plans for the future. “I started to think about what else I want outside of Manifest and I’m starting a company with my friend so I’m excited to start a venture with her. I also work with the IRC [International Rescue Committee] and I think this year they have a trip coming up that I might be joining them on. The way that they run their organization is awesome. I’m excited to get more integrated into that.” Roxburgh is sure to have a big year ahead of her filled with more opportunities and projects that we can all be excited to keep an eye out for.

SABRINA's Written by Rylie Kyhn
How does an actress who started with a role as a housewife on a comedy television show called The Book Group end up playing, Madam Satan, a demon that possesses someone else’s body on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a horror fiction show? Well, you learn to adapt, become versatile, and you just take what you are offered of course! Scottish actress Michelle Gomez always grew up with the idea that she wanted to be an actress and has learned so much along the way that allowed her to develop into the actress that she is today.
When you were a young girl, did you always know you wanted to be an actress or pursue a career in the entertainment industry? “There is not a time that I can remember when I didn’t want to do that. From a very early age, I kind of knew that there was some kind of power in dressing up and shouting for a living and so from age five or so I suppose. I just always loved dressing up and goofing around and then I kind of somehow just made a career out of it.” And made a career out of it she did. She has been in the industry for over 30 years and has played so many unique roles. Gomez is an incredibly gifted and versatile actress but it took hard work and dedication and many years, many different roles, and many learning opportunities. You have played different roles on comedy shows, what were those roles like compared to your current role, Madam Satan on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina? “Well you know, the thing is, I never really saw myself as being funny or the comedic actress so it was always a surprise to me that people found me funny. I kind of found out along the way that I think it’s because I take the characters seriously and I’m not going for laughs but I think it’s because their circumstances are quite
29
funny and because I am kind of invested in them and immersed in their reality and somehow it ended up being comedic. My first role on television was called The Book Group and it was written and directed by Annie Griffin and again I was playing this frustrated housewife named Janice and apparently it was quite funny. I mean the show was funny but I didn’t know that at the time. So I guess you could describe my approach, or my career as ‘same house, different curtain.’ If you know what I mean, itt is the same kind of performance, just a different script. Because that is basically what most actors end up doing. We get hired for the thing that we do best, and it turns out that apparently I am quite funny.” An actress that starred in quite a few comedy shows that doesn’t think she’s all that funny and admits it? That just shows you how humble she is because she is so open with readers about who she really is. Gomez described that she stars as these kind of evil characters but in fact, she doesn’t really have a single evil bone in her body. Quite ironic right? Were you super interested in comedy? Did you think you would stay in comedy? Or were you open to different opportunities? “I really just took jobs. I was just so desperate to work. I pretty much would have said yes to anything. I kind of found out
April 2019
pretty quickly as a child the power of comedy. Comedy to me, I compare it to the power that musicians have because a musician can play their instruments and on the first note, change your mood. That first note will either raise your spirits or take you to a place of darkness. Similarly with comedy, you get an immediate reaction. If you’re going to try to relate to people through a comedic bend and someone laughs, you know you’re doing something right. So I sort of compare it to music in a way. Basically what I am trying to say is that with comedy you get an immediate reaction. When you are playing for a live audience, and you are manipulating them or controlling them in a way that makes them laugh, and that is a powerful tool to wield.” What has been your favorite role that you have played so far? “You know, I fall in love with every character I have gotten to play. Mainly because I can’t believe I got the job. I am always still pinching myself that I managed to book the gig, and I’m not kidding. I would say probably on Doctor Who when I played The Master and with Doctor who I was a massive fan as a girl, as a child and growing up. So I ended up playing one of the most iconic roles in a show that had been running for 50 years and that was a pretty big deal for me. First of all, because I’m a fan, and then it’s like ‘Wait a minute’ only men have ever played this role so that

was a big thrill. They also gave me so much freedom so I could pretty much play with my whole palette of colors and that was unusual, and liberating, and magical. So I thought once I left Doctor Who, I chose to leave after my doctor left when Pals because I couldn’t imagine being the master to any other doctor. So I kind of thought ‘aw man’ you know, that’s it. I always think I am never going to work again and I always think ‘that’s my last job’ and I said ‘at least I’m going to go out on a high’ you know, it can’t get any better than Missy. Then of course, Madam Satan came bumbling in. So now I am just like, OK, I must have done, I don’t know, something right, because I am blown away that I get to play Madam Satan. It’s just the most ridiculous name as well, I love it. I never play anybody with normal names. I’ve never played anyone named Susan or Allison, I’m always The Master, Madam Satan. I love it!!” In 2016, Gomez’s role as Missy in Doctor Who earned her a nomination for the British Academy Television Award (BAFTA) as best supporting actress. She played a version of The Master on the show from 20142017 and just listening to her speak about it, you could tell she absolutely adored it. Madam Satan is a very strong and powerful character, what has been the most difficult part in playing in that role? “I don’t think I can describe my time playing her as difficult in any way really because it’s just been such a gift. Maybe what would be most difficult is to not have as much fun as I am having playing her. Sometimes I end up getting a bit tight and it doesn’t really work for me so my challenge has been to try to stay within the parameters of the shows tone and make sure I’m not bouncing around too much but it’s hard. I guess that is difficult, you know respecting and remembering what the show is about as a whole and not sort of unbalancing it in anyway. I want to make sure that I am living in the same world and that we are connected and I think we have really succeeded in doing that. I mean the show is called Sabrina and Kiernan Shipka is just a phenomenal human being. She has got to be one of my most favorite people on this planet. She’s number one on the call sheet
31
and everything comes from her in terms of the pace we work at and totally on set what she expects from us. She has such a high standard, and it’s all professional. I swear, I want to be Kiernan Shipka when I grow up. I really do. I sort of, what is it? ‘Fangirling?’ (laughs) When I go on set I am kind of fangirling. Madam Satan is fangirling about Sabrina and everything about that sounds a bit wrong but it’s kind of right.” When you first found out you were going to play in the role of Madam Satan, what did you do in order to connect with her as a character? “Well, you know it’s a pretty tall order trying to connect with someone who is a demon that possesses someone else’s body. It’s kind of like rubbing your head and stroking your stomach at the same time it’s like ahh! I basically just had to think I can’t get in my head too much about this, I can’t intellectualize it, I can’t think about it too much because if I do, i’ll think myself into a pretzel or think myself into knots. So what I had to do was I had to be really open. I had to make sure I didn’t bring any of my preconceived notions about what a demon might look like entering someone else’s body and really just look at the script, really look at it scene by scene and take it from there. My costume told me a lot, gave me a lot of clues. My character line and where I need to get to in each scene gave me some clues. Then it was just up to literally being prepared, knowing my lines, showing up, and handing her over and being willing to listen to whoever my acting partner was on that day. Normally it would be Kiernan or an empty branch because Stolis doesn’t really exist.” You have taken on so many different roles and your acting career has been so unique because of them, how has each helped you develop into the actress that you are today?
today but that only happens because I just kept at it. This industry is 90% rejection, 8% luck, and 2% oh here we go again. It’s a tricky business to kind of survive in. I am thirty years in and that is only because I still love it passionately, couldn’t imagine doing anything else, wouldn’t want to do anything else and I am prepared to take knocks along the way and just be filled with gratitude that I get to play again and then I get paid for it! I’m honestly just blown away that I am here talking to you, about me. Ha Ha Ha.” What is something that fans and viewers don’t know about you? “Well, I am scottish. Let me think for a second. Hm, I don’t know. That’s a hard question. I like pink pants. (laughs) I love them! No, but just I guess I am playing all these troll characters, you know I am in the corner of the market to play witches until the day I die. It is kind of ironic because I am kind of nice and I am kind of a good person, I don’t really have an evil bone in my body. There I am stroking my moustache like ‘ha ha ha’ in the shadows when really all I want to do is high kick my way into some crazy musical. That would be my DREAM! To play Mama Rose in Gypsy on stage on Broadway. That would be checking every box in my career if I got to play that. That is my biggest ambition! Oh my, I would ROCK THAT! I need to learn how to sing first, but that is just a technicality.” For someone who plays the handmaiden of the devil on a horror fiction show, Michelle Gomez is quite the opposite from her character and you figure that out within just a few minutes of talking to her. She may be a powerful, sort of evil character on television but in reality, humble and kind-hearted. She does however, make the transition to her character, Madam Satan, seem effortless which is a skill many will never posses.
“Each job has made me the actor that I am today. Each job is your education, each job is your experience, each job is your opportunity to make mistakes, learn from them, and try to get something next time. That is where we learn our craft. So I might be a half-decent actress that stands before you

HBO-Chernobyl We all know we’ll need a new show to binge-watch after the final season of Game of Thrones ends. Consider filling that void with HBO’s new miniseries Chernobyl, which outlines the worst manmade disasters in history. The 1986 nuclear accident devastated Ukraine, and this miniseries portrays that disaster in the most authentic way possible. The miniseries offers any HBO fan’s favorite features, including a compelling story, killer acting, and all of the signature theatrical effects needed to push the story further. Chernobyl offers something for everyone--horror fans, those who love political thrillers, war movie buffs, and fans of the courtroom drama.
Amazon-The Romanoffs From the producers of Mad Men comes Amazon’s original anthology series, The Romanoffs. Each episode showcases a story of a different person from around the world who believes to be a descendant of the Russian royal family. Boasting the acting talents of John Slattery, Diane Lane, Ines Melab, Kathryn Hahn, and many more, this production’s grandiosity with beautiful filming locations and intriguing storylines will satisfy anyone’s royal fantasies.
Hulu-The Act Following the true crime wave, The Act on Hulu presents a new true-crime story each season. Based on the bizarre true story of the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard, a mother who suffered from Munchausen by proxy, Season 1 of The Act will have you on the edge of your seat. The production value sets it apart from other true crime stories, particularly thanks to the theatrical performances delivered by the star-studded cast including Patricia Arquette, Joey King, AnnaSophia Robb, Calum Worthy, and Chloe Sevigny. Each cast member slips so deeply into character that you’ll forget you’re watching a TV show.
Netflix-On my Block, Season 2 Audiences are raving about the latest season of Netflix’s original series On My Block. Following the continued antics of South Central’s Monse, Cesar, Ruby, Jamal, and Jasmine, audiences will get to experience a similar rollercoaster of emotions they felt while watching the incredibly successful Season 1. In addition to continuing to address more heavy topics, including deportation and neighborhood violence, characters like Jamal never fail to crack the audience up. You won’t want to miss a minute of the laughs and heart-wrenching drama that everyone is talking about.

the very thoughts that I had been trying to articulate and linked them to art I loved. It was like he was speaking right to me.
What has been the most helpful advice you have been given in your acting career?
My soccer coach used to say “if you don’t shoot, you won’t score.” It’s not acting
advice, but it should be. Acting is a game of taking risks and if you don’t put yourself out there, you’ll never score.
Did you know much of the Godzilla
franchise before getting involved with this project?
I LOVE the Godzilla franchise! I love monsters and action and ever since I can re-
member I have loved Godzilla. The director, Michael Dougherty, masterfully laced the film with Easter Eggs for the enthu-
siasts. I felt like a kid in a candy store on set.
How was it working on a film with

very hard. She is an impressive woman. I never met Bradley, but I am a fan of his, maybe our characters will collide in the next one.
How did it feel working on a popular,
highly-anticipated Hollywood movie? I feel I should say something ultra cool

MUSIC by Sam Spotswood
Album Pick: Khalid-Free Spirit One of the biggest breakout stars in the music industry’s recent history has released his sophomore album, Free Spirit. This album offers a more jaded, melancholy vibe than his previous albums, which glorified adolescence. Though his signature airy sound returns, the lyrical content conveys a significantly heavier twist that reflects Khalid’s maturation not only as an artist but as a man. Free Spirit addresses the struggles of young adulthood, including mental health and drug abuse. Khalid’s smooth, emotive vocals blend beautifully with the layered production that matches the significantly more personal lyrics that seems to contradict the album’s title. Khalid’s longing for a free spirit is ertainly exuded in the album’s 17 tracks, particularly in “Twenty One,” an ode to alcoholism among young adults. The Texan singer-songwriter even collaborates with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including John Mayer and SAFE, further staking his reputation as a mature artist.
New Discovery: Eric Dash New Jersey native Eric Dash’s music rejects genre-based labels. Dash’s music has been featured on some of Spotify’s top playlists and has been lauded by the likes of Kendall Shmidt. His unique, wistful vocals blend the sonic folk tradition of Paul Simon with pleasing poppy production harkening back to the early 2000s. In particular, the instrumentation and production on his latest single, “Sober,” seems to draw inspiration from the 2000s hits like Coldplay’s “Fix You.” Other singles, including “If I Could” have a similar vibe, giving Dash a nostalgic edge perfect for the millennial longing for the aughts.
Single Pick: Lennon Stella-"BITCH (takes one to know one)" Branching off from the sister duo Lennon and Maisy, Lennon Stella has certainly solidified her own distinct sound. The 19-year-old’s most recent single, “BITCH (takes one to know one),” features an infectious, yet simple rhythm alongside her breezy vocals. The song also showcases a witty premise in which a girl turns her boyfriend’s insult towards her against him. If that doesn’t pique your interest, perhaps the production of Rob Knox will; Knox has worked with none other than T.I., Logic, and Justin Timberlake, and similarly offers his gift for layered, complex production to Stella’s track.

AS A DISNEY CHANNEL GRADUATE, CALUM WORTHY HAS EXPERIENCED AN INCREDIBLY SUCCESSFUL ACTING CAREER, STARRING IN THE NETFLIX HIT AMERICAN VANDAL AND THE EMINEM PRODUCED FILM BODIED. For Worthy, this part was an incredible opportunity, further establishing his reputation as a serious actor. This is in part due to Worthy’s extensive dedication to his role. Worthy prepared for months in advance in order to perfect his craft, making sure to pay respect to everyone influenced by this particular murder case. “It was very exciting, it was very exciting. I find that when I prepare a comedic role or a dramatic role, I prepare in the same way. I try to find depth and try to find which ways the character is complex and find the nuances in the character. What was interesting with this, though, specifically, was that he’s a real person and he’s still alive today, and the people that the story impacted may see this project. So I felt that there was this huge responsibility to get it right and to be respectful of all the people involved.”
an incredible experience working opposite of them. I feel like in some ways, someone asked me once, ‘What was it like acting opposite Patricia and Joey?’ and I actually feel like I never did act opposite Patricia and Joey. I only ever worked opposite of Dee Dee and Gypsy, because they were that convincing and that authentic with their characters.”
Although Worthy and his costars faded into their respective characters, he and his castmates made sure to alleviate some of the pressures that came with conveying such a tragic story. “We definitely stayed committed to the characters and to the storyline when we were filming, but as soon as we had a lunch break or we finished filming, we would be laughing and having fun and really trying to give ourselves a break from the material. out so much and don’t get so down on yourself when things don’t work out, because those are the building blocks to your future. I feel like there’s so many disappointments, especially in this career when you get rejected nonstop. I started acting when I was 9. I faced so much rejection at such a young age where you’re auditioning constantly and you’re trying to get a break. But I’m so grateful that I’ve had all of those experiences because it helped me become, I think, a stronger actor and definitely a stronger person.” The effects of these formative experiences have certainly played out not only on screen, but in Worthy’s personal life. In addition to acting, Worthy’s dedication to excellence in all facets of life persists. He is a devoted climate change activist, whose advocacy has been unwavering since his freshman year of high school. “I was first inspired to become an activist by my teacher in 9th grade. His name is Mark Newfeld, and he showed us An Inconvenient Truth. And I remember watching that movie, and him posing the question afterwards saying: ‘This is the greatest challenge that your generation is going to face (which is climate change). The question is what are you going to do about it?’ And that question has stuck with me to this day. In high school, I was very active in the environmental movement. As soon as I was able to have the luxury of having a fan base and having people that actually listen to me on social media, and make sure it was my priority to encourage them to educate themselves on some of these causes and to be activists themselves.” Be sure to catch Worthy’s riveting performance in The Act on Hulu.

As you know, Bello is a lifestyle magazine that readers use to keep “up to date” on all good things LA. What are your top 5 favorite things about living in LA? I was born in LA and I honestly can’t see myself living anywhere else unless it’s for work. I love Melrose and FairFax, I go there to shop and pick out some cute outfits. There’s also a lot of graffiti and art there to take pictures at. I love my family and friends, a lot of my best friends have moved away to their home towns so I’ve been making a lot of new friends and I love the people in LA. There’s a lot of great colleges, some of my dream ones are UCLA or USC. I’m currently in community college and am going to transfer to a university when I’m 18. The weather is usually really nice in LA but recently it’s been raining and really gloomy these past couple months. I think the last thing I love about living in LA is being close to all the studios. It’s just easy when you’re in the center of things. Do you have any go-to places in the city? I love going to Moonlight Roller Way! I went roller skating for the first time since I was a kid and I loved it! I love going with friends and skating to the music.
Bello
Bello is also a fashion magazine. What are some of your personal wardrobe staples? I wear my Air Force 1 and Jordan 1 all the time. I always add hair clips to my outfits. I always add my cropped black puffy jacket, it has neon green inside and finally I use silver jewelry and chains, and belts a lot. What are three things you can’t live without? My heart, Portable charger and my phone. How do you like to treat yourself after a stressful day? Literally I eat chocolate. That’s how I reward myself. After that I go to bed. Knock out. What are some of your goals for 2019? I’m actually flying to New York this month to film a new movie! Its gonna be such a cool experience I’m so excited! There’s a lot of good people attached to the project and I’m so happy to be a part of it! It’s a dramatic movie, just my specialty haha! I’m also gonna start recording music soon, making YouTube videos and more content for my supporters. I wanna start modeling more and doing more editorial photoshoots like we did!

Cool HeART’s Hot Opening Night Written by Sam Spotswood
On a cool February night, fans of contemporary art from all over Los Angeles flocked to the luxurious Sofitel Hotel in Beverly Hills to experience the artistic prowess of renowned celebrity fashion photographer Giuliano Beckor at the Cool HeART event put on by art curator Nausicaa. The event showcased the newest collection by Beckor alongside pieces of a similar edgy styles by street artist James Goldcrown, painter and sculptor Elena Bulatova, and self-taught artist and ex-Girlicious member Tiffany Anderson. All 40 one-of-a-kind pieces in the collection encapsulated the feeling of life in Los Angeles, combining Old Hollywood-esque imagery with urban aesthetic traditions to convey a uniquely Angeleno experience. The cutting edge creations included a variety of colorful paintings, bold sculptures, and dazzling neons, all of which set the mood for the electricity the night presented. While experiencing the innovative creations of Beckor, Goldcrown, Bulatova, and Anderson, guests indulged in modern musical mixings, delicious gourmet food, and the sleek atmosphere of the Sofitel Hotel, all of which complimented the gallery. To add to the excitement, a variety of talented Hollywood stars, each clad in fashion forward attire, arrived to celebrate Beckor’s art. The bustling red carpet boasted big names including Dame Dash, Evan Ross, Torrei Hart, Briona Ashly, Savannah Kennick, Belle Adams, and much more. Dame Dash in particular brought incredible energy to the carpet, accompanied by his artistic girlfriend Raquel Horn, a group of famous female friends including actress Angelique Periera, and even his adorable pup, Governor. Each star added to the already bright night full of breathtaking contemporary art, and aided in making the Cool HeART art gallery opening a truly unforgettable night.
