MAY 2019 With Game of Thrones coming to an end, we can feel a dramatic change in the air but we don’t despair as summer is on its way! Looking forward to those long summer nights and soaking up as much sun as we can but in the meantime, there are so many things to look forward to. Our current weather makes us want to cuddle up so why not go to the movies? Tate Taylor’s film MA is coming out in theaters May 30th and is sure to send chills down our spine. In our issue we had the chance to sit down with two of Ma’s handsome cast members Corey Foglemanes and Gianni Paolo who share their experience working on set. Elysia Rotaru who does the voice over for “Face your fears 2” wows us with her beauty and intelligence. Let’s not forget Loren Lott, singer and actress who is rising up in the industry and our model of the month Blake J Carr. All these different upcoming movies/shows/talent aren't the only things I am looking forward to, personally. I joined the BELLO team right after graduating from Loyola Marymount University and I am so excited to be a part of it. Having interned here last summer, I got a sense of BELLO and it is more than just a magazine: they bring the best out of everyone and anyone who crosses path with them. As I write this letter, I can't help but smile as I know this is going to be one of the most beautiful experiences I will get go through. Xx Alexandra Bonnet Entertainment Editor @bonnetalex18

19 year old Corey Fogelmanis has certainly come a long way since his days as Farkle on Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World. Since the show’s ending in 2017, Fogelmanis has become one of the most promising young actors in Hollywood, specifically as he delves into the horror genre with his starring role in this year’s upcoming horror film Ma alongside Octavia Spencer, Juliette Lewis, and Luke Evans among other seasoned professionals, and his upcoming episode of Hulu’s Into the Dark. His growth in the entertainment industry is a reflection of his personal transition from adolescence to adulthood, something certainly visible on set of his Bello photoshoot where he owned the studio with complete confidence. While his experience on Girl Meets World was certainly formative, Fogelmanis is grateful to be able to work on new and exciting projects like Ma. “As I’ve grown as a person, the most important thing for me was to find projects that gave me the opportunity to translate that growth into my acting. I was super excited about working on this movie because there were so many aspects of it that I didn’t previously have in other work. Elements of sexuality and maturity and realism were all things I was

excited about in the initial script and I think it’s really cool that people will get to see parts of me they’ve never seen before. I’m all about little baby steps of growth. Filming Ma was that and so much more for me,” said Fogelmanis on his transition from Disney Channel to the horror genre. Just as the audience gets to see a new side of Fogelmanis, the obstacles he faced, including the challenging climax of the film, and the opportunity to learn from veteran performers helped Fogelmanis grow as an actor. “I walked away from this experience with a true understanding of what makes a professional in this field. Both Octavia and Juliette came in each day with such intense focus and perspective and for me, watching them in their element was, should I say, a masterclass in acting? Yes. I felt that the way they balanced work and play in between takes was beneficial for me to observe. I unfortunately didn’t have any scenes with Luke in the film, despite the fact that he plays my father! But I did get to meet him and he’s so cool,” said Fogelmanis.

"I can’t recall a single moment where we didn’t having fun while filming this movie. My costar Gianni is one of the funniest people I know" While also allowing him to explore dimensions to his profession, Ma has proved an incredible experience for Fogelmanis to make lasting relationships with his costars. “I can’t recall a single moment where we didn’t having fun while filming this movie. My costar Gianni is one of the funniest people I know and has the most intoxicating laugh. Especially during all of the party sequences that didn’t require anything too intense emotionally, we were living our best lives. The heavier days were typically much quieter so we often looked forward to the cast/crew dance parties that followed dinner.”
“Like you said, I have been redefining my relationship to fashion as I develop a stronger point of view. Where it sits for me now is very related to the things I’ve been working on/through in my life. I don’t always feel like I’m the kind of person that is able to walk into a room and command attention. I typically feel like one of the quieter people in a room. So fashion has been a way for me to say something without actually having to say anything. I’ve found it to have a direct relationship to confidence, whether that be for better or for worse. I think its possibilities are amazing and endless.”
Everything Fogelmanis gained from Ma certainly translated to his next big project of the year, an episode of Hulu’s Into the Dark, which airs this August--a project he is incredibly excited to share. “The thing I enjoyed most was how far I was able to take it. Each episode of the show seems to put a heavy focus on the psychology of it’s characters. I think that’s really smart to derive horror from the darkest parts of our own minds. I got to explore some emotional extremes and really let myself play and that was an incredible opportunity to learn more about myself as an actor.”
Like his interest in fashion, Fogelmanis’s love for music, specifically for Norwegian artist Sigird (which he gleefully blasted during his photoshoot) and his appreciation of artistry only further demonstrates his level of maturity. “I think rawness and strong sense of self are two things I’ve identified in the artists that I love. Everything Sigrid does, whether this has to do with her European-ness (which inherently makes everything cooler) or due to just who she is as a person, is so honest. I also really like Marina and the Diamonds and Lady Gaga, while we’re on the topic of artists with strong points of view. (!) My music taste is all over the place however. Right now I’m really loving Kacey Musgraves’ ‘Golden Hour’ and Death Cab for Cutie’s ‘Thank You For Today.’ And I have an intense infatuation with movie scores. It all comes down to what I feel an emotional connection to and that’s something I don’t think I’m fully able to iterate.”
In addition, Fogelmanis has found his own interests, including his growing love for fashion and music. In particular, Fogelmanis is fond of European designers that compliment his body type, including Topman, which he wore to the carpet premiere of Ma. This latest look, like his role in Ma, is a product of evolution and self-growth on the young adult’s part.

After being invited for festivities at a friendly woman’s house, a group of teenage friends find themselves having the time of their lives. However, as time goes on, strange events begin to happen that cause the friends to suspect the woman of not being as genuine as she initially seemed. This is the premise of the new horror film, Ma, that will be released May 30 in theaters. Gianni Paolo, Brayden in Starz’s Power, plays Chaz, one of the teenagers that is subject to Ma’s antics. We got the chance to speak with Paolo about all things Ma, along with some other parts of Paolo’s life. By Mercedes Banwart
You are fairly new to acting. How did you get started in the industry?" Basicall, when I was playing Junior Hockey my first year out of High School, I had a lot of free time. A lot of the kids on my team would party and drink and go to bars but I decided to take improv and acting classes. It was all a little new to me because I always wanted to do it but was never able to. About a year later, I moved to Los Angeles and the rest is history! With Ma coming out at the end of this month I am curious: have you always been a fan of the horror/thriller genre? YES! I’m more of a slasher type movie kind of guy. I CANNOT do supernatural and ghosts at all. If someone is coming at you with a knife, I can square up and have a chance. When we are talking ghosts, there is NOTHING you can do! My favorite horror movie is definitely Scream. I love the mix between horror and comedy because one second you’re on the edge of your seat and the next you’re laughing like crazy. I also think in movies like that, the laughs can be bigger because it’s such a relief. What was special about this set and this cast? It was basically like a summer camp for 5 weeks. I got to know the cast and crew SO well and I found one of my best friends (Corey Fogelmanis) while working on this project. A lot of the chemistry you see on screen was 100% real. When we weren’t on set filming, we were all hanging out regardless. Octavia taught us so much every single day and it really shows. Was there anything you found challenging while working on the film? My character was very high energy and the life of the party, so when Octavia, or Diana would have a serious moment and my character makes some sort of joke in the film, it was hard to kind of keep up that energy while next to me they were preparing for something intense. A couple times, I would have to walk away from set and just listen to stand up comedy and keep myself in that mentality. We also filmed in the basement for about two weeks which, by the end of week two, I was like, “get me out of here.” Luckily enough, that was the point where we ACTUALLY needed to get out. How was working on a film set similar to/different from television? I think with film it’s a little more spontaneous, especially a lower budget Blumhouse project. Every day we figured out what we needed to do to do the writing justice and we would just kind of pick what worked the best. In TV, it’s a lot more organized, there are pre-built sets, and if you’ve been playing a character for a long period of time then you’re so familiar with him or her, there is little that will surprise you. There are pros and cons to both. 17
What drew you to Chaz’s character? I loved Chaz because he just said whatever he wanted. I think that is noble in some sort of way because he doesn’t have any judgement on himself. I think Scotty Landes, the writer, did such an amazing job with not only Chaz but the whole script and I just loved waking up and being able to have fun every single day playing this role. How are you and Chaz alike? Chaz and I are definitely alike in a lot of ways. The humor was so spot on to what I am attracted to. When I first read the script I just remember thinking I haven’t laughed, cried, and been weirded out this much while reading a script ever. Chaz also says the wrong jokes at the worst times which I can definitely relate to. Who inspires you in the industry? Donald Glover is someone who I really look up to. Not only was he a writer/actor on Community, he also has a stand-up special, performed improv and sketch on house teams at UCB, and created one of my favorite shows on right now, Atlanta. I started watching Donalds Youtube group, Derrick Comedy, before he started doing any of that when I was about 11 years old, and it’s amazing to see what he’s become. Another guy I love is Will Forte. I would listen him talk about his process with Last Man On Earth on podcasts and it just inspired me so much. What do you like to do when you aren’t working? I still play hockey every week, and box almost every day, and I truly think it keeps me sane. I also help produce a podcast called, This Past Weekend with Theo Von. We’ve had on some amazing guests I’ve gotten to meet that I really admire such as Chris D’elia, Bobby Lee, Jocko Willink, Andrew Santino and Joey Diaz. What are you looking forward to the rest of this year? I’m super excited for everyone to see Season 6 of Power! Being on that show is an absolute dream. If you told me I’d be making a TV show with 50 Cent when I was 12 years old, I wouldn’t have believed you. It is truly one of the best experiences I have had thus far!

You have such a wide variety of roles in different genres under your belt. What sorts of projects/ roles do you connect with the most? I love to keep myself open to different roles and seeing what sticks. Although I am deeply in love with the horror, action and comedy genres, nothing can stop me from opening my heart to a good romantic comedy or drama. I also really enjoy roles that let me explore physicality, and do my own stunts. And, I would love to be in a period piece and learn how to yield a sword and other skills I can add to my tool box. How does working on a comedy like The Buddy Games differ from projects like KILLBIRD? Is preparation any different? My prep was totally different for each role. KILLBIRD was a very unique film to work on, and one of the most challenging roles I have played to date. The dialogue included monologues filled with strong, elevated language and dealing with very heavy and sensitive subject matter. It was important for me to know and understand what I was talking about as Taylor Crane, so the director and writer Joe Zanetti and I dove in deep. I did a lot of research, searching online and watching parallel projects to understand the world I was about to live in, and to learn as much as I could about subjects I was never really mindful of and I tell you.. what a rabbit hole I went down. But I had to it, it was part of the work. There was also a lot of physical work I had to prep for as well. I had to do major upkeep on my body as I did the majority of my own stunts and fighting scenes. With The Buddy Games, I clicked with the role of Jane quite quickly as I already knew that kind of woman, so dropping into her was smooth. There was a limited amount of technical prep, but I did want to make sure the moments I shared with Josh Duhamel - on screen and as our director - were honest and solid. Rehearsals were also held in regards to comedic timing we had to get the timing right on a joke or the physical funny moment. There are actually a lot of similarities with drama and comedy because the stakes are so high in both, and at the end of the day you are coming from a place of truth for the character and telling a story, just with some adjustment that fit each genre. You also do quite a bit of work with video games. How did you get into that and what do you like about it? It was about three years ago when I first got into performance capture for video games, and the process was the same as with any casting. I got the audition, prepped the best I could, went it to read, had a blast, then waited to see what would happen (laughs). I remember they asked me to be fully off book, and to come up with blocking and movements that showcased the whole environment so the creatives could see where my imagination went. It feels like a combo between theater and on screen acting, which keeps me excited about any prospect of working on a game. It’s all play all the time, because I’m being seen by hundreds of cameras in the volume and by the camera right in front of my face, so any little expression and movement gets captured,
Bello
and it forces me to be very hyper aware of my body and facial expressions. And the more expressive I become, the more realistic the final animation will be. I adore that I get to use my body and voice in a multitude of ways to bring to life to various characters from human to alien to animal. There is something so freeing to be in a velcro bodysuit, covered in reflective balls with a camera right up in my face, with nowhere to hide. It’s like you’re naked in a way, and as uncomfortable that may sound, it pushes me beyond my comfort zone which I love. When you have the time, what shows and movies do you like watching? Right now I’m obsessed with HBO’s Barry, and I’m doing my best to catch up on Game of Thrones - I’m late to the party, don’t judge me (laughs). I’m also loving Killing Eve, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisle, Letterkenny, True Detective, Dead to Me, YOU, Pose, Big Little Lies, Chilling Adventures of Sabria, and ANY shows my friends are working on. Oh and I also love a good cartoon including Big Mouth, Rick and Morty, Archer, and of course Sponge Bob. Recently I also rewatched John Wick and John WIck 2 to gear up to watch John Wick 3, I just love Keanu Reeves. By the looks of it I love all sorts of different genres, but horror, action, and mystery are my go-to’s. Who is your biggest inspiration? It’s hard for me to single out one person in particular, as I am constantly meeting people who get added to my inspiration list. I would say the people that do inspire me work hard to follow and achieve their dreams, including my family and friends who hustle hard and have so much drive to be better day in and day out. But, if I have to single out a few people, the first would be my husband Ryan Williams. Words can’t express how much he inspires me. He has such a strong work ethic that shows up not only in his work as an actor, but also in other areas of his life, including in his passion for golf. So much so, that this year he won a major tournament and is now a British Columbia Golf Champion. He knows how to find balance and still keep his passions alive. I take a page out of his book daily. Then there is my sister Elyda, she is so talented in her craft as a visual artist and she takes risks, including moving to a bigger city and going after her dream job. She really inspired me to make my move to LA. And I have so many women in my life who are mothers or new mothers and find a way to balance motherhood and their careers and make it all work. That to me, is such a beautiful thing to witness. What is an example of the most recent time you were challenged and how you worked through it? One of the biggest challenges I recently faced was going behind the camera for the first time as a producer on the short film FWD that I did with my production partner. I was so nervous about it because I never went to school or had professional training for that side of the business, just what learned from being on set as an actor, so I just had to trust myself, the cast and crew and the process. It was one of the best learning experiences of my life, and very

rewarding, as FWD went on to win a multitude of awards within the film festival circuit, at an international level. It also gave me a greater appreciation of the whole machine of filmmaking, and rekindled my love for being on screen in a new way. It really showed me how work it actually takes to put together a project from beginning to end. I can’t wait to produce more projects, so in the meantime, I started to produce videos for my YouTube channel. In regards to acting, the path of being an actor is always filled with challenges - some big, some small and some totally out of your control. But at the end of the day, the biggest way I overcome them is knowing that I have something special to offer which is unique, versatile and will fit into a role that's it's meant to. I do practice keeping myself open and ready by keeping my tool box full and sharp by taking class when I'm not working, I keep my body healthy with workouts and good food ( and wine), I train my mind with meditation, and fill my spirit with other passions, including hiking, reading, sports, gardening, and traveling. This helps keep a balance, so I can continue pursuing my craft, and enjoy my time on this crazy fun and exciting journey of life. How would you describe your personal style? I like to honor the body I am in and celebrate and accentuate the natural curves of the female form. Growing up, I used to model and I’ve always admired style icons including Monica Bellucci and Helena Christensen. Fashion is another extension and an outlet for my creativity as it helps me express how I feel, take risks, and expand my mind. I find it fun and inspiring to collaborate with my stylist as well and get their creative juices involved, it’s as if we’re working on a group art project that we all enjoy. Hopefully my choices in my personal style encourage and create positive conversations for young girls, women, and all the others out there who need inspiration in express-

ing how they see themselves and to shine brightly. What are some of your go-to’s in your closet? I love to dress up, even though it’s tough going to set or the voice booth in a gown (laughs), so my go- to's include crop tops, a great pair of jeans, and heels or nice flats. Or, if I’m feeling more femme on a particular day, I’ll pair a cute dress with heels and a fun bag. What are you looking forward to most this year? So far 2019 has been great to me. I was able to participate on a panel for ACTRA DAY IN LA at the Beverly Hills Hotel where I was invited to speak about my career, moving to the US, and about working in both Canada and in the US as an actor. I also had the pleasure of voicing the iconic superhero She-Hulk in Marvel’s Superhero Adventures. This summer, KILLBIRD, a psychological/action film I worked on has its world premiere at the Dances with Films Festival in Los Angeles, and I have a few more video and virtual reality games being released including Face Your Fears 2 from Turtle Rock Studios and Oculus, and another from the team at Ready at Dawn Studios, however I can’t speak on that project quite yet. You can also hear me on Fox Sports North as their female promo announcer and on Paramount network for the new season of INK MASTER: BATTLE OF THE SEXES and as the voice of ZILLOW in their new campaigns. How can your fans keep up to date with yourself. Follow me on Instagram at @elysiarotaru and subscribe to my YouTube channel and remember to leave a comment. I also always look forward to meeting more people at the comic conventions I am grateful to attend. Thanks for chatting with me

Loren Lott Overcoming fears and chasing Dreams. by Mercedes Banward
Loren Lott, now starring as Ana Hamilton on CBS’s “The Young and the Restless,” has a versatile past filled with dedication and hard work leading up to this point in her career. She began auditioning for roles at only thirteen years old with the help of her manager in Hollywood before moving to Atlanta to attend Clark Atlanta University. ing and education, extending to the musical realm as well. She competed in Season 14 of “American Idol” and secured a spot in the top 16 of the season. This experience on “American Idol” segued her career in theatre, where she starred as Ti Moune on Broadway’s “Once on This Island” and landed a role as Gladys Night in “Motown the Musical,” understudying none other than Diana Ross. BELLO got the chance to chat with Loren and ask her a few questions about her past projects, future goals, and successful career.

What was it like to be an understudy for Diana Ross on a national tour when you were younger? That was my first Broadway anything so I was so excited and grateful to have that job. And to play the icon, Diana Ross, sometimes. It was amazing. I loved being so glamorous and fabulous. I loved having people be so excited to tell me that I sounded just like Diana or that I reminded them of their childhood. I loved being apart of the Motown family like my favorite entertainer ever, Michael Jackson.
Feather Stole: TARIK EDIZ Jumpsuit: LUXE FASHION LINE Shoes: ALEJANDRA G. Jewelry: LINGUA NIGRA
How did your experience on “American Idol” help you in your career today? It made me brave that’s for sure. I didn’t really have a backbone before that show, but after that show, I was introduced to strolls and the dark side of being in front of America. It made me stronger. If I can survive that, then I can survive anything. It didn’t really progress my career in my opinion. It added to my credibility whenever I got a job though. Ironic. You said becoming a Disney princess is one of your ultimate goals. What drew you towards that interest? I have always loved all things, Disney. Disneyland, Disney princesses, Disney songs. I love classic Disney. I feel like every Disney princess even the new ones are classic. They are so inspiring and I know a lot of us have subconsciously made a lot of life decisions because of a princess. Whether it’s finding a “Cinderella’ wedding dress or hoping to find the perfect guy like a prince, or having long beautiful hair like Ariel or living your life searching for that feeling you had of warmth and inspiration as a child that these Disney princesses had something to do with. I want to be a part of making someone a better person. I want to sing songs that bring a child comfort even as an adult. I want to be a part of that feel good feeling. You have a strong love for your family how great has their support been to your career? My mother is truly my spine. She worked extra so that I wouldn’t have to get a regular job and miss out on opportunities. She used all of her sick days taking me to Los Angeles for auditions and flying to New York for callbacks. My grandparents always gave me their cars so we could take as many trips as needed to wherever I was needed. My Aunt and Uncle would fly out just to see a play. EVERY play. My mom and Grandma paid for voice lessons until I could do it myself. My twin brother missed a bunch of sleep while I sang getting ready to perform and my mother never let me give up when I got discouraged. Without that, I don’t know what I would be doing. I’m so grateful, especially for my mom. Even when it took others a little more time to gain faith in me. She started with it! I am so blessed. How do you dedicate your time outside of your busy acting schedule? I sing a lot. I always train. I drive my vocal coach Tara Simone Studios crazy. She loves it. Mostly. I like to DIY things also (Do It Yourself). I have a lot of fun turning a table into something glamorous and making my own decor. I love hanging out with my friends and making videos! I have to go to the movies often. It keeps me inspired and not too comfortable where I am. I also workout and I dance and on a rare occasion, I draw. I’m currently looking for a good volunteering program or ministry to get involved in.
