#48 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR This month’s theme, our Beautiful issue, marks a change as to how we have been doing things here at Bello. While putting this issue together, we almost compromised our creative process due to pressure from different sources, but we put our foot down and decided to go back to emphasizing the reasons we originally started this adventure in the first place. As we obsess about entertainment and fashion, we share with you, our readers, the excitement we have for art and culture discoveries, but more than anything, our goal is to have fun during the whole process. When it comes to True Blood’s resident Teen Vamp, Jessica Hamby, things generally have a way of working themselves into a matter of life and death. Sure she’s grappling with a healthy dose of your average teenage insecurity and raging hormones, but clearly for this ferociously open hearted redhead, the stakes are a lot higher... no pun intended. “She’s thrust into this world where she’s having to face incredible traumas and huge consequences for the wrong decisions that she makes, but sadly, she’s still somewhat of a kid, and (therefore) makes a lot of mistakes.” BELLO

Deborah Ann Woll’s had a lot of time to reflect on her portrayal of the perpetual teen, after all, she’s brought delicate nuance and carnal heat to her role on Alan Ball’s popular HBO vampire soap for 6 seasons now. “From the inside, thinking of her best interests, I hope that things settle down for Jessica, and that she finds somebody who will love her and take care of her and understand her. But from the outside, as an actor playing her, and a fan of the show, who’s watching, I hope that she continues to be tested and remains in this crazy traumatic place. My favorite stuff to play is when Jessica makes these terrible terrible mistakes.” Of course, fans of the show know that one of the young vampire’s most mature and thoughtful choices occurred last season during that remarkable albeit heartbreaking scene in which Jessica was forced to glamour and ultimately say goodbye to her first and only love, Hoyt. “Jim Parrack is one of my best friends, and we got to tell this wonderful love story together. The fact that it was not only Hoyt leaving us, but also Jim, really heightened that experience for me. I truly felt like I was saying goodbye forever to someone that I cared about.” It didn’t help that the show’s rapid schedule and overwhelming production demands left little time to prepare for or dwell on the difficult scene. Fortunately, that’s not Deborah Ann’s style. “I never make concessions or ask for more time to shoot a tough scene because I just know that the producers already have had 10 obstacles to work around before we even begin filming. [In fact], I’ve had a couple of really difficult scenes this year and found out the night before that I was shooting them the next day. You just buckle down and do the best you can.” Echoing the sentiments on which her native New York City is built, this is one Brooklyn girl who isn’t afraid of a little hard work. In addition to the rigorous demands of shooting, Woll, along with friend and writer/director Gianna Sobol, also films weekly segments of Jessica’s Video blog, BabyVamp, a popular companion piece to the show since 2010. “I absolutely love it and have so much fun! It’s quite a long day though, because we shoot about 30 pages of material, but it’s exhausting yourself doing what you love.”
BELLO
Naturally, the millions of ‘True Blood’ fans out there have no desire to see the talented actress’ schedule ease up! “There’s no official word about season 7 yet, but we’re all very pleased with this season and hope that we get to have another. Though it was the first without Alan, and we miss his inspiring presence and great support, our new Showrunner, Brian Buckner, has been there from the beginning, as have most of the writers, and many of the cast, so the family that Alan worked so hard to create isn’t going anywhere!” True Blood fans can rest easy!

Beauty in motion Words By: Steven Carver
Beauty can be found just about everywhere. What makes that simple dictum rather difficult is how subjective it can be. Everyone has a different opinion about what’s beautiful and what isn’t. Luckily, that’s not applicable when describing the Jaguar F-Type – everyone is in agreement about how striking it is. The F-Type is a return to Jaguar’s history: a twoseat convertible sports car with a focus on style and performance. Jaguars have always defined a muscular elegance, and the F-Type continues this tradition, whether top up or down (it takes only 12 seconds to fold down flat). From the front, the headlights run vertically, leading the eye up and along the fender crease. The hidden, automatically deploying door handles support the design purity (they remain flush with the door panel until activated by either unlocking the car). Full LED rear lamps wrap around to the trailing edge of the rear wheel arch, where the car’s powerful rear-wheel drive stance is emphasized. And an active rear spoiler deploys at higher speeds to reduce aerodynamic lift. In all, the exterior is designed to create an appearance of the car speeding forward even while sitting motionless. Under the hood, the F-Type showcases new supercharged Jaguar engines. The V6s (a 3-liter supercharged V6 in 340 hp/332 ft-lbs of torque
and 380 hp/339 ft-lbs of torque varieties) and a 5-liter supercharged V8 (with 495 hp/460 ft-lbs of torque) are equipped with the Intelligent Stop/ Start system to enhance fuel economy under certain driving conditions. The supercharged V6 and V8 engines combine high compression, direct fuel injection (creating a more homogenous air-fuel mixture for cleaner burn) and dual independent variable cam timing (DIVCT) to deliver their high levels of performance and efficiency. The Dymanic Launch Mode (in the S version) and Active Exhaust add to the urgency of driving. An eight-speed Quickshift automatic transmission (with a manual override function), allows the F-Type driver to select a gear which keeps the engine within its optimal power band. The Quickshift system enhances the sense of connectivity by ensuring immediate shifting performance and an adaptive shift strategy that has 25 different programs, depending on driving style and road conditions. The three versions of the F-Type offer progressively more powerful braking systems, all with the high levels of pedal feedback required for accurate modulation. With disc brakes ranging in size from 13.9 inches (V6 models) to 15 inches (V8 models) in front to and 12.8 inches (the V6) and 14.8 inches (the V8) in rear, the car is not only made to go, but stop. And all cars are fitted as standard with ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Emergency Brake Assist, just in case the standard brakes aren’t enough.
A mechanical limited-slip differential is fitted as standard to the F-Type S, which offers driver the opportunity to explore the car’s outer limits of its grip. Additionally, the F-Type S and V8 S models are fitted with Jaguar’s Adaptive Dynamics suspension damping system that controls vertical body movements, roll and pitch rates (up to 500 times a second). Every response from the steering to the transmission shifting, throttle, brakes and suspension has been finely honed to be as connected, accurate and involving as possible. Inside the F-Type, an asymmetric cabin layout reflects the sharp focus on the driver. Different finishes in the driver and passenger areas are used, visually separating the occupants. The controls are ergonomically grouped by function (i.e. A/C and auxiliary switches), enabling the driver to more easily use them without diverting eyes from the road. And the air vents on top of the dashboard rise out of the dashboard only when instructed to by either the driver or climate control system. For those who don’t only want to hear the sound of the engine, the F-Type is available with two audio systems from premium British audio experts Meridian; the top range features the Meridian Trifield System which places its occupants at the center of their own sonic environment. Although beauty can be found anywhere, it’s usually superficial. The new Jaguar F-Type proves that it’s not only skin deep. With all of the unseen technology, it’s even more striking.

American television has had its fair share of Wolves on screen, and now that Hollywood has taken note of what works and what doesn’t, movie theaters nationwide, and internationally are seeing more and more wolves a showing. But nothing says “this a good thing” like getting a double series order on a network known to generally have a 12-episode season standard. That’s exactly what happened to Tyler Posey, the title character on the network’s supernatural series Teen Wolf, an adaptation of the 1980s cult classic, starring Michael J. Fox.

Stepping into those shoes was honorable to say the least according to Posey, only 21. “It wasn’t so much that I was a fan of the original film, it was more so that I was a fan of Michael J. Fox’s work,” He says. The MTV installment follows the title character in a slightly different tone and style than the Rod Daniel directed film. It’s darker, funnier, and definitely sexier. With Posey leading the cast, it’s almost impossible for the series to not embody the newfound sexiness that producer Jeff Davis has so generously added. Posey, a California born bred guy, has brought the character of Scott McCall to life, and three seasons later, he’s managed to escape any and every negative notion once mentioned when news broke out of the MTV’s plans to adapt the more than decade old film. “So much has changed for me,” he says. “I can’t walk down the street without being looked at, recognized, photographed.” He continued, “I’ve been able to travel the world thanks to the show. I’ve done and been places I never thought I would. I’ve been really blessed.” Blessed, he is, in some ways more than others. “I don’t work out. In-fact, I hate working out,” says the ultra ripped image of an athlete. It just takes one viewing of any of Teen Wolf’s previously aired episodes to note that Posey is one of the selected, the elite group of humans that don’t have to shed a single drop of sweat to obtain a killer-bod, one only fit for a teenage werewolf. “People are usually shocked to hear that,” he tells me, and with every bit of reason I agree as to why.

Another thing, not as apparent as his physique, is the fact that he has six-tattoos scattered around his body, all covered up really well on the show up until this season’s premier in which Posey’s character gets a tattoo on his right arm; of two bands across each-other. The tattoo, which is a major plot point in the episode, is Posey’s actual tattoo. “That one didn’t hurt as much as the tattoo on my calve did,” he says while letting out a quick laugh. It’s evident that the series is a milestone for the network—so far its longest running scripted program. But even more so, having a person of Latino descent leading the series. “He has to be Latino, right?” says Posey of his character. Though his character’s ethnicity hasn’t been addressed directly on the series yet, Posey is pretty positive that it’s self-explanatory. “His mother’s a little dark as well. I’m sure he’s half Latino at least.”
BELLO
Of course, after the long process of make-up Posey has to endure to become thee Teen Wolf, there’s not much Latino left, or anything for that matter. “Dylan’s [O’brien] never had to do it. He’s never really experienced what it’s like to go through the process, or being a wolf period,” says Posey. “If I had to pick one cast-member to give the bite to, it’d be him. Because of those reasons.” O’Brien and Posey, who play onscreen best-buds, have a similar relationship in real life. “He’s my best friend on set. We’ve gone through alot together.” O’brien’s character, Stiles, is the only character besides Posey’s, whose name carries on from the original film to the MTV adaptation.

At a distance, Tyler Posey does seem to somehow embody the essence of Scott McCall’s ‘Wolf-ness’ for lack of a better word, but he’s also very much a guy’s guy. Living in Northridge, California, he stays away from the hustle and bustle effect that the general Hollywood area could have on someone of Posey’s stature. Very much in love with his girlfriend of many years, with a gig on the side that requires him to growl and prance around like an animal from time-to time. It’s hard to believe that the same human played “Ty” along-side Jennifer Lopez in Maid in Manhattan, but then again, it seems almost destined to be. Even then, his presence left note of itself. With a career ahead of him, and a once in a lifetime chance to recreate an iconic character and do so splendidly, Tyler Posey has paved the correct path, in a town where the road taken usually becomes a regret.

MR. BICOASTAL: JOHN GALLAGHER PHOTOGRAPHY ALEKSANDAR TOMOVIC WORDS BY HIKO MITSUZUKA
John Gallagher, Jr.’s first genuine L.A. experience involved flipping the bird to an impatient driver while commuting to the set of ‘The Newsroom,’ the HBO drama that returns for a second season this month. He attempted to make a left turn at one of the city’s many tricky intersections when a fellow driver laid on his horn. “I got into a terrible road rage fight,” the Tony Award winner admits. “I let my emotions get the better of me. The guy proceeded to hang out his window and scream at me...I got to work, and I was terrified that this person was going to hunt me down, but that’s just me seeing too many movies.” The Wilmington, Delaware native may have been a far cry from the pedestrian friendlier sidewalks and subways of New York City, where he first soaked up the spotlight on Broadway in careerdefining projects like ‘Spring Awakening,’ but he’s gradually adjusting to his bicoastal situation now that’s he spending equal amounts of time in both cities. “I thought New York City might as well have been on the other side of the moon growing up,” he remembers. It wasn’t until he started going into Manhattan for auditions that realized how close he was to the city – and his dreams.

Having grown as an actor on the stage, he thinks his theater background prepared him to tackle equally challenging roles in TV and film, especially while reciting those Aaron Sorkinwritten mouthfuls of dialogue as producer Jim Harper on ‘The Newsroom.’ “The muscle is already stretched, having already learned how to cover long passages of dialogue,” he explains. “The way Aaron writes is very musical and very specific, and so you want to be word perfect when you’re learning your lines because they’re like musical notes. They’re there for a reason. They all fit together. If you lose one, you lose some of the thread.” Another challenge while making the transition from stage to screen: Those crackofdawn schedules. “Consistently getting up before the sun is up,” says the selfproclaimed night owl, “was a little scary.” WHAT’S NEXT FOR JOHN: Starring alongside Brie Larson in August’s indie dramedy ‘Short Term 12,’ or what he calls “one of the best experiences I’ve ever had as an actor.” Based on the awardw inning short film, the Sundance and SXSW crowdpleaser is about a couple of twentysomethings who work at a foster care center for teens. “There’s some very intense and upsetting subject matter, but the movie itself is so full of life, love, hope and family.” HIS SUMMER PLANS: The first thing he’s going to do once he’s back in New York is travel up to Vassar College, where he’ll get to workshop a play he wrote called ‘Sláinte’ (the name is a Celtic term which means “cheers” or “health” during celebratory toasts). HOW HE DEFINES “BEAUTIFUL”: “To me, I like to keep an open mind and not have too much of a definition of what beautiful can be because I find that it can be very surprising. Things that you would have never imagined can strike you as beautiful and sometimes come around the corner and take your breath away. So, I try to keep an open mind and let that definition always be evolving.”

Suiting Simon Get to know the charming Brit taking over Hollywood the delightful Eugene Simon. Although Eugene Simon is just 21 years old, he’s become a Brit garnering a lot of lust with both young (and older) women alike playing the disgruntled knight, Lancel Lannister, who’s been schooled in the ways of love, lust, and intrigue by matriarch (and political beast), Queen Regent Cersei Lannister, on ‘Game of Thrones.’ He has many a heart swooning over his pouty portrayal on the highly successful HBO fantasy series, and he happens to also cut a dashing figure in a tailored suit—which never hurts with the ladies.
We chatted with Eugene to discover if the interest and allure of feminine wiles means certain death to the men on the popular ‘GoT’ and what’s on the map (and agenda) for this actor on the rise.

They are pretty good on giving me a heads up, but I’m mostly in Ireland. So as a younger man, how do you cope with the racy storylines? When you compare that to what the rest of the cast has to do, it’s not that shocking. I mean, there is a fair amount of lovemaking and sword swinging. There certainly is some sword swinging! I knew you were gonna go there and be cheeky! I just remember, at your age, I would have been terrified to do a romantic scene with an older, incredibly beautiful person, like you do with Lena Hedley. Yes, but Lena is delightful so it makes it way less scary. I think it depends on the sort of person that you are, really. I mean, if you have to take your clothes off, you have to take your clothes off. I had never done anything that intense before. It doesn’t really bother me. I felt quite free really. Yet when a woman uses her feminine charms on the fella, do you get the sense this can’t end well? A little bit. With seduction comes death. Didn’t she stab you with an arrow? Well, we did have an argument that day (laughing), and she made bloodied up an already bloody wound. So that excuses her then. Have you ever met the author (George R.R. Martin)? I have actually. We met in Belfast with some other cast members, and he was fantastic. We went to the pub, and he was so charming, his mind is always ticking. He also watched us and observed our mannerisms, knowing whom you would play. He’s eccentric, yes, but in a phenomenal way and so sociable. I liked him. It’s like seeing an old friend. If fans show up on his doorstep, I hear he’s quiet welcoming. I think he completely understands his audience and just gets them. Modeling: tell me about that? Actually I wasn’t in it that long. I started when I was 16, but I think people think I was more involved than I actually was. I still do a bit now, but it’s just another way of expressing yourself. Even the shoot I did with Bello, it feels like a stylish story, and the name David Bowie got knocked around with the ideas and themes. Lovely tailored suits! How did you get into acting? It started with a love of the author, Roald Dahl, when I was 8. The idea started with that if I could remember stories or poems, maybe I would remember scripts easily too. Well you seem very stable. No tabloid shenanigans on the horizon? Actually, I have a corpse under the bed...as we speak (laughing hysterically). BELLO
Ever dressed up with costumes from the show? No, but if we did, we would look like a really regal bunch wouldn’t we? Last year, I went as Slender Man; it’s a game. Type it in to your Google.
When I was a kid, for Lego. It was just weird. It made no sense. These casting directors studying me as I exploded and flew ‘Star Wars’ paraphernalia around a disco ball Death Star. So bizarre!
Ever been told you look like Jesse Spencer?
‘Before I Sleep.’ What can you tell us about your next movie?
No, really, never... I loved ‘House’ though.
It’s a gorgeous romance, and my character is a great American writer.
Celebrity crush? Olivia Wilde definitely.
BELLO
What was your worst audition?
Anything super awkward in a photo shoot you’ve done? Not really. The intimidating or embarrassing stuff doesn’t really bother me. There’s that saying, “It’s like rolling in pig shit.” You can either feel gross or just go wild and roll around in it. I prefer just to roll around in it!

VILLAINOUS WAYS:
Will Yun Lee
PHOTOGRAPHY Marc Cartwright WORDS By Hiko Mitsuzuka Will Yun Lee knows a thing or two (or seven) about playing bad guys. For years, he’s graced big and small screens in villainous roles that have pitted him against the likes of Colin Farrell (‘Total Recall’), Chris Hemsworth (‘Red Dawn’), Jennifer Garner (‘Elektra’), and now, Hugh Jackman (in this month’s Marvel sequel ‘The Wolverine’). But there’s one role he’s still adjusting to: fatherhood. The action star isn’t stopping there either. You can also catch him in the cyber thriller, ‘Intelligence,’ this fall on CBS. We recently caught up with this manonthemove to discuss dirty diapers and bloody bruises...

So, how many injuries did you suffer on the set of ‘The Wolverine’ while playing Silver Samurai? Who had the more rigorous training you or Jackman? I had just a few injuries, nothing major. A split shin jumping over something and then my last take of the shoot, in a fight scene, I was jumping over someone doing a jump spinning back kick, and I didn’t dig in deep enough to reach my target. I hyper extended my knee pretty badly. Still haven’t gotten that MRI, so it must have not been too bad. You must have pretty strict eating habits (we don’t like to use the word ‘diet’ around here). What’s one cheat meal you love to indulge in while working? My diet isn’t too strict but I do force myself to stay away from white rice during shoots, which is like kryptonite for me and to most Asians. My favorite cheats are pizza and cupcakes. I sound like I’m pregnant! How has your martial arts training helped you in your training as an actor? Is there a different kind of discipline between the two? My training in martial arts has always been the foundation to everything I do in life. When it comes to acting, I would say it’s very similar in the sense that preparation is everything. And that what counts most is everything you do when no one is watching. Luckily, because I spent half my life competing in tournaments, I learned early on that losing is sometimes my best teacher. What was the hardest lesson to learn when you first moved to Los Angeles? The hardest lesson I learned when moving to Los Angeles is that the things that matter to me the most is a “long yard” game. No single win, movie or TV show “makes you.” But hopefully each thing you do makes you a little better for the next thing that comes along. I got a long ways to go. Congrats on being a new daddy! What’s more challenging: battling bad guys...or changing diapers? Definitely changing diapers and avoiding the surprise hydrant that hits you in the face. But I see how hard my wife works to raise and feed our baby boy, and it makes me look like a wimp. Women are definitely the superior beings! How has your perspective on your work changed since being a father? Any interest in doing a family film? I think my perspective hasn’t changed so much, but it has solidified my objective to a greater degree, that I have to work harder to make sure I provide my family in every way possible. No more marathon sessions of ‘Halo’ or ‘Call of Duty’ on the XBox. Damn. But I would love to do a family film or even a comedy where I’m not trying to take over the world or destroy the “good guy”. That would be nice. What’s your definition of “beautiful”? Beautiful, to me, means so many things. But I guess the word “respect” comes to mind the strongest. I love watching people respect things around them, whether it’s their parents, jobs, opportunities, and it shows a selfless kind of appreciation for what they have. Oh...and there is one more thing: watching my newborn baby boy sleep. That’s beautiful!

Darkly Dreaming Darri
DARRI INGOLFSSON photography Brian Higbee // words by Falene Nurse // STYLING Toye
Will Darri Ingolfsson go “all medieval” on HBO’s favorite murderer (Michael C. Hall)? Or will he become yet another serialkiller casualty on ‘Dexter’’s eighth (and final) season? One can’t be sure, as he plays Cassie’s new love interest— who just happens to have a penchant for collecting medieval equipment. From senatorial aide (‘Last Resort)’ to lover of antiquities, we delve into the very handsome Darri to discover if his new role will have him washing ashore on a beach near you! When I say the words “Sexy & Beautiful” who immediately comes to mind. Or is it more than 1 person that you think of? There are many people out there that fit that description in one way or another. Some objects could even be described thus. But I think, in my humble opinion, that my wife and soon to be the mother of my first born son fits the description quite well.
That could be a very complicated sociological question if we really wanna get into it. Perceived beauty and all that. But I think that I dare not delve into that here. Are all Icelandic folks generally as eccentric as Bjork or is she a rare bird? Aren’t we all a little eccentric in our own way? Also, to truly measure eccentricity we need a point of normality. I’m not too sure I’ve ever really found that point. In the next Season of ‘Dexter’, you are an antique dealer of old medieval equipment? That sounds ominous. Are you going to be potentially killing anyone with an Iron Maiden? I think I’d rather potentially kill someone with Led Zeppelin... but that’s just personal preference, I suppose. Are you going to be dating Cassie in the show?
Can Ingolfsson be translated into English?
It seem, at least so far, that my purpose on American television is to be the love interest of beautiful and interesting female characters. Not a bad gig, that one.
The literal translation is “Son of King Wolf”.
Is your brother really a skateboarding cop?
When did you first leave Iceland?
Yes, he is indeed... you can find a link on my Twitter that will provide Instagramic proof.
I’ve traveled a lot ever since I was born, but I first really moved away from Iceland when I went to London in 2000 to attend drama school. I’ve been away since. Icelandic, Swedish and, Norwegian people are known for their beauty... why do you think that is?
Your Twitter handle says “you are here for the ride.” Please elaborate. I guess, in one way, it’s a statement of intent to an idea I heard awhile back from a pretty cool guy called Bill Hicks. Or just some words I thought would sound cool on my Twitter page.

Keltie Colleen May Have The Best Job Ever... Words By Hiko Mitsuzuka Photo by: Steven Taylor
Keltie Colleen makes her job look easy. After all, she gets to hang out and chat with celebs on a daily basis on ‘omg!Insider.’ But she’s proving that she’s more than just a pretty face. Having established herself as a popular blogger and published author, this former backup dancer is conquering entertainment journalism with her unique fan girlish style and an overall appeal that makes her seem like she could be friends with anyone. She’s just that type of gal. See for yourself... So, we’re slightly jealous that you got to interview 98 Degrees and New Kids On The Block. Did your tween self spontaneously combust or what? Absolutely! I used to sleep on Donny Wahlberg’s face on my NKOTB pillowcase, and when I told him that in the interview, he didn’t speak. He just starting blushing and fanning himself. Twelve yearold me was freaking out. I peed a little, not joking! What’s the craziest red carpet story you can share with us? I’ve seen so many stumbles, broken dresses, and behindthescenes goodies. It’s hard to pick just one! This year, at the Grammy Awards, ‘omg!Insider’ host Kevin Frazier and I were covering the carpet, and Carrie Underwood and Neil Patrick Harris both arrived at the exact same time. I had to sort of step in front of him to grab Carrie. Lat-
BELLO
er, when I joined him and Kevin, he TOTALLY called me out on snubbing him. It was hilarious, and we put it in the show!! Who has been your favorite interviewee thus far? That’s like asking me to pick a favorite child! Even though I am a goofball onair, I take my job very seriously, and I’m always aiming to create oneofak ind moments with celebrities that other hosts cannot pull out of them. Smelling Adam Levine was a highlight, and I am obsessed with Sharon Osborne’s energy. Josh Groban let me play his gong too. How important is authenticity in your business? Being authentic is everything. There have been times that I thought I should try to be “sexier,” wear padded bras, get hair extensions, and wear tight dressesbecause that’s sort of the “host” norm, but whenever I do that, I feel really gross. I like weird clothes. I like rocknroll. I’m not polished on camera because I’m just such a superfan of life, and I am totally geeked out that I get to do my job. I think it comes across to my readers and the ‘omg!Insider’ audience. I act the way they would act if they were sitting across from Bradley Cooper ,and he said he liked your dress (I squealed, turned red, and melted into a little puddle on the floor). You’ve been a blogger for nearly a decade now. How has blogging changed over the years? Do you think the line between it and journalism is becoming more blurred? My blog, aprettyheart.com, has seen pretty dras-
tic changes over the past 10 years. When I first started, people would say, “you’re doing what?” and now huge brands like Skype, Chap Stick, and Red Bull approach me every week to be featured in my blog. Again, authenticity is key. I started my blog because I wanted to share and inspire others to follow their dreams. I wasn’t trying to make money or get famous off it. I just wanted to share. I think on the Internet, and in life, the cream rises to top. There is a place for all kinds of journalism, and it’s exciting that we now share in this incredible open platform/community through blogs. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring entertainment journalists? Find something you love and build your area of expertise around that. For me, it was music and the Internet. I was such a fan, and I had a vast knowledge of that world because of my obsessive musicianstalking and blogging, so I turned that passion into my expertise. Nobody wants a pretty girl to read lines anymore; you have to be more than that. Since this is our “Beautiful” issue, we’d like to ask: how do you define that word? The moment where time stops, the crazy world stops spinning, and something beautiful catches my eye or my heart and it makes me feel, for one small second, that everything is exactly where it is supposed to be. It could be a song, seeing my fiancé walk across the room, my dog sleeping, the sunrise while driving to work at 4 am, or a beautiful celebrity walking the carpet in a couture gown. Sometimes there is so much beauty in the world, I wish I had more hours in the day to see it all.
REVIEW
THE TO DO LIST PARTIES LIKE IT’S 1993
By Brad Liberti Aided by a supporting cast that includes some of television’s best and brightest, funny girl, Aubrey Plaza, gets down and dirty in writer-director Maggie Carey’s charmingly raunchy teen sex comedy, ‘The To Do List.’ With nods to genre gems like ‘Pretty in Pink’ and ‘Easy A,’ Carey turns the classic male coming-of-age obsession with losing one’s virginity on its head, examining the topic from the female point of view with the same awkward frankness and explicit humor that have made films like ‘Porky’s’ and ‘American Pie’ such indelible teen favorites. Like her hero, Hillary Clinton, Brandy Clark (Plaza) is an intelligent, determined, and highly independent young woman who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to work for it. Unfortunately, there’s one area of her life that hasn’t been given its due diligence. Despite the clear affections of her sweetly dorky study buddy Cameron (Johnny Simmons), Brandy’s about to head off to college having only French-kissed a guy once in the 9th grade. That all changes though when her two sex-crazed BFFs (Alia Shawkat, Sarah Steele) drag the uptight perfectionist to her first kegger, and within minutes, our heroine is chugging Apple Schnapps and having quite the awkward encounter with college-age stud Rusty Waters (Scott Porter. The unconsummated dalliance convinces Brandy that she must lose her V-card with the same assiduity that she brings to all of her endeavors. That means drafting up a color-coated list of the sexual milestones that she hopes to achieve in a summer with any lucky schmuck she can find. Luckily, she’s got a new lifeguarding gig at the town’s dilapidated community pool, where drunken man-boy Willy (Bill Hader) presides over a staff of misfits, including Rusty and Cameron.
Carey’s easy-breezy comedy possesses all of the classic ingredients for your average teen sex farce, but somehow she manages to keep things consistently fresh and funny. Sure there’s plenty of gross-out moments, but ‘The To Do List’ also displays a real heart, not to mention a hilariously spot-on recreation of life in the blown-out, acid-washed, pre-Internet days of the early 90s. Plus, the accurate and arresting soundtrack includes enough classic songs from the era to keep any poncho-wearing grunge lover sufficiently sated. Nostalgia aside, it’s the all-star cast that really makes this thing come alive. Famous for her deadpan stare, the ‘Parks and Recreation’ star is an unselfconscious delight to watch. Open and expressive in every scene, Plaza’s natural charm and girlish petulance more than make up for her acting inexperience and glaring real-life age discrepancy with her teen character. Johnny Simmons also shines as Brandy’s very own Duckie, while Bill Hader continues to prove why he’s been MVP over at ‘SNL.’ Connie Britton also brings warmth and grace as Brandy’s extremely sexually forthright mom, and a hilarious Rachel Bilson makes her slutty bitch sister, Amber, a giddy treat to watch. Raunchy yet heartfelt, Maggie Carey’s 90s-set high school sex romp will have you fondly remembering the days of scrunchies and Trapper Keepers…not to mention those awkward adolescent moments of fumbling towards ecstasy.

Chatting With The Cast of
‘THE WAY WAY BACK’ By Hiko Mitsuzuka Coming-of-age stories and summer seem to go hand in hand, and ‘The Way Way Back’ (out July 5), perfectly blends elements of both. Written and directed by actors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, the film features an impressive roster of comedic heavyweights like Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Alison Janney, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry, and the writers/directors themselves. At the film’s center is 14-year-old Duncan (Liam James from ‘The Killing’), an awkward teen who’s stuck on a family vacation in an idyllic New England beach community with his freshly divorced mom (Collette) and her prick of a boyfriend (Carell). The indie dramedy, surprisingly, was eight years in the making. “I feel so gratified to say we did it ourselves, and it’s very emotional in that sense because we were able to see the vision from start to finish,” says Rash, who picked up an Oscar last year for adapting ‘The Descendants.’ Faxon and Rash, who have been friends ever since they met at The Groundlings, found directing to be “a natural segueway” for them after years of writing together. The inspiration for the sweet, summery tale came from a mutual fondness for water parks and growing up on the East Coast surrounded by eclectic characters.
BELLO
The films opens with a scene in a 1971 Buick station wagon that immediately sets the tone of the rocky relationship between Duncan and Trent (Carell). “The first scene in the car,” Rash admits, “was a conversation that happened between me and my stepfather at the time when I was 14 going to our summer vacation in Michigan.” The opening scene also rang harsh and true to Carell, and the rest of the script proved to be equally resonating. “I was intrigued by this guy because he didn’t seem like a pure villain or complete jerk,” he recalls while fighting off jet leg during our interview (he just flew in from Australia). “He seemed like someone who just didn’t possess the best tools to do what he wanted to do…Somebody who is tough on you and wants to build character…it’s the type of character I have never really done before.” Allison Janney, who plays Betty, the vacationing family’s margarita-loving next-door-neighbor, was always a fan of Jim and Nat’s since the Groundlings. “They work so well together,” she says. “They understand the comedy of the situation…they have a real strong suit as writers. They write these characters that are relatable and funny.” Working on location in Massachusetts also helped the cast and crew settle into a summer vacation mode. “It was one of the most idyllic
spots to shoot a movie,” Janney remembers. “A great summer camp experience.” “Getting paid to eat lobster rolls was nice,” Rudolph laughs while recounting on-set barbecues and trips with the beach with the cast. Stealing some scenes in the movie is Sam Rockwell as Owen, a man-boyish employee at the water park where Duncan learns a few life lessons in between dealing with his increasingly fractured family and crushing on Betty’s daughter Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb). “He’s so likable,” Carell says matter-of-factly. “He talks about channeling Bill Murray, but he brings so much that’s his own to this character.” Janney elaborates: “Kids are going through angst and changes, and all the adults [in the film] are very flawed themselves and working through their own life issues, and that’s why a lot of people will relate to Sam’s character.” Rockwell credits the naturally flowing script. “It’s a good script, so we didn’t have to improvise that much…Most of it [Owen’s stream-of-consciousness dialogue] was written out, and I just memorized it and spit it out as quickly as I could.” “It’s like a natural weapon,” Maya comments on his rapid-fire delivery in the film. “Sometimes a delicate weapon.”
Six Months Gone:
OUR EARLY FAVORITES 2013
By Adrienne McIlvaine Though we’re still a long way from the Golden Globes and Oscars, we thought the six-month mark would be a great time to revisit some of our favorite movies of the year so far. ‘Side Effects’ (Steven Soderbergh) - A cynical take on America’s obsession with prescription drugs, this tightly wound thriller was overshadowed by Soderbergh’s flashier ‘Magic Mike.’ Check it out for Rooney Mara and Jude Law’s uncomfortable chemistry and a slick plot that has more twists and turns than ‘Mulholland Dr.’ ‘Admission’ (Paul Weitz) - Starring Tina Fey as an overworked, undersexed Princeton admissions officer, this affectionately neurotic comedy highlighted her whipcrack timing and prickly charm. Paul Rudd and Lily Tomlin, as her respective would-be boyfriend and militant feminist mother, round out a cast that helps make the family-first film anything but sappy.
‘Spring Breakers’ (Harmony Korine) - Known for his scuzzy, backwoods aesthetic, Korine’s first film since 2009’s ‘Trash Humpers’ lived up to its neon-lit hype. A gloriously trashy satire of teenage excess, ‘Breakers’ revels in bikinis, babes and bank robberies while revealing the seedy underbelly of it all. ‘Upstream Color’ (Shane Carruth) - Carruth’s winding story of a woman who has her identity stolen and meets a man who may have undergone the same experience is gorgeously frustrating and mesmerizing and one of the most creatively daring films you’ll see this year. ‘Pain & Gain’ (Michael Bay) - Based on the true story of three Miami personal trainers who decide breaking and entering is the shortcut to the American dream, this darkly funny action comedy brought Bay back to his ‘Bad Boys’ roots. Sure, it’s uneven in some places but we’ll take this over ‘Transformers’ any day.
this you will. A black-and-white ode to dreaming the impossible while you’re still young and delusional, ‘Frances Ha’ is sure to do for the luminous Gerwig what Woody Allen’s ‘Manhattan’ did for Diane Keaton. ‘Star Trek into Darkness’ (J.J. Abrams) - Abrams earned the trust of Trekkies everywhere with 2009’s reverent ‘Star Trek,’ and his second outing with the crew of the Enterprise ramps up the intensity and mythology even more. Benedict Cumberbatch’s mystery-shrouded villain is just the icing on the cake. ‘Mud’ (Jeff Nichols) - Matthew McConaughey has been undergoing a late-career renaissance, and his wily, moving performance in ‘Mud’ as a fugitive searching for his true love is among his best work to date.
‘Frances Ha’ (Noah Baumbach) - iI you didn’t know the name Greta Gerwig before, after

10 Beautiful Songs… About Being Beautiful by Hiko Mitsuzuka
The word “beautiful” pops up in a number of songs that celebrate love and the general trappings of life (heartbreak, success, obsession). Here at Bello, we’ve revisited some of our favorite similarly-themed tunes that set our hearts aflutter and remind us why we fell in love with them the first time we heard them. 1. “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera – One of the most popular and uplifting anthems of the 2000s is a timeless pop ballad that earned Xtina much well-deserved respect (and a Grammy and GLAAD Media Award) after filling out those assless chaps in 2002’s “Dirrty” video. You honestly think we wouldn’t include this at the top of our list? 2. “Beneath Your Beautiful” by Labrinth feat. Emeli Sande – The British rapper trades in his verbal throwdowns for some vulnerable vocals and recruits the “Next To Me” singer for a delightful duet about scratching the surface to see what gorgeousness lies beneath a perfectly imperfect lover. 3. “Beautiful Disaster” by Kelly Clarkson – It’s a shame this track from the debut album of the original ‘Idol’ was never released as an official single. With a slight country twang in its production, good ol’ KC sings about a helpless boy who keeps giving her mixed signals. 4. “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt – Two words every woman wants to hear from her man and one song that earned this former British Army officer a slew of fans across the globe back in 2005. 5. “My Beautiful Woman” by Backstreet Boys – This track from BSB’s little-known 2005 album, ‘Never Gone,’ is a rockin’ ditty about, what else, loving the ladies. 6. “Beautiful Monster” by Ne-Yo – A heart-pumping ode to femme fatales by one of R&B’s preeminent crooners? Yes please. 7. “Beautiful Dirty Rich” by Lady Gaga – This is old-school Mother Monster (circa 2008), an unabashedly over-the-top celebration of decadence and dollar bills. 8. “Beautiful Lie” by Jennifer Paige feat. Nick Carter – Remember Jennifer Paige (1998’s “Crush”)? She returned to the music scene with BSB’s resident bad boy for an unfortunately underappreciated electro-pop gem from 2009 that makes betrayal and heartbreak sound so…well, beautiful. 9. “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction – Yes, even the snobbiest of music snobs couldn’t resist last year’s sugary sweet number from those well-coifed lads from the U.K. 10. “#Beautiful” by Mariah Carey feat. Miguel – Mimi jumps on the hashtag train, teams up with the R&B playboy, and delivers a surprisingly easy-breezy jam, a single from her forthcoming summer album.

Beloved by comic fanboys and TV geeks alike, Dania Ramirez knows a thing or two about watercooler television. Perhaps it’s because she has brought her spicy style and natural charm to such iconic shows as ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer,’ ‘The Sopranos,’ ‘Heroes,’ and ‘Entourage.’ Now the talented Dominican stunner steams up the screen as part of a groundbreaking, allstar Latina cast in Marc Cherry’s (‘Desperate Housewives’) hotly anticipated Lifetime dramedy, ‘Devious Maids’... Can you tell us a bit about your character? “My character is Rosie Falta. I love her. She’s awesome! She’s hilarious and also very religious, a bit judgmental in her own way, but it comes from a good place, even though her friends don’t always take it that way. “She’s a Mexican immigrant that moved to the States after the death of her husband, to find work. She’s left her son behind with her mother so that she can earn enough money to eventually bring him to America and give him a better future.” Rosie’s very different from other characters that you’ve played. How challenging is the role? “Very... but I love playing the character, and I relate to her so much. It’s a very special story for me because my parents came to this country when I was only six months old and it took them about ten years to get a Visa and become legal. Until then, my older sister and I stayed with my grandmother and various aunts in the Dominican Republic. “[Though] I lived through this, I had only experienced it through the child’s perspective until now. With this role, I get to put myself in my mother’s shoes and actually understand the courage that it takes to leave your child and everything you know behind to try to come to America and build a better life. My mother wasn’t a maid, but she worked in factories and sewed and did whatever she could to earn money. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the sacrifices that her and my father made, and it’s so interesting and also personally challenging to explore what that generational experience was like.”
TOP + SKIRT RAOUL BRACELET EFFY SUNGLASSES SAMA EYEWEAR
Would you say that this is a major theme of the show, sacrifice? “Yes, the grand theme of the show is the story of struggle and hard work to achieve the American dream, whatever that is for anybody. But it’s also about the relationship between upstairs and downstairs downstairs being the maids, and upstairs being the bosses told from the maids’ perspective. Everyone has their own household that they go back to, but really it’s about the relationship between these five women. They are working really hard to achieve their dreams in America and they are here for each other to provide unconditional love and support.” Were you nervous about the weight of this role and what it might mean, particularly to Latino audiences? “I was nervous but I was determined to humanize her. I wanted to make her real. My mom never felt pity for herself or wanted pity from anyone. She worked hard and had her group of friends that became her family, sort of like what Rosie feels for her girlfriends on the show. “It was very important for me that I tapped into a little of my own experiences as well as those of the Latino community here in America because I do have this responsibility of really telling this story in the best and most truthful way possible. Plus, there’s the fact that I was born in the Dominican Republic, and I play a Mexican woman, so I felt that I had added pressure. I made sure to do a lot of research and dialect work, because I wanted Mexican people to feel completely respected.” Marc Cherry’s never been accused of being a shrinking violet. What’s he like to work for? “He’s incredible. For me as an actress, I love guidance and a strong point of view, and that’s what Mark has. He’s brilliant at what he does, and when I decided to be a part of this show, I knew full well what the tone would be. The combination of melodrama and dark comedy is a Marc Cherry staple, and nobody makes you laugh, cry, feel, and hate someone all in the same show quite like he does.” BELLO

Between writing a book, working as the goto fashion expert on shows like Live with Kelly and Michael, Rachael Ray, and the Steve Harvey show, we were lucky enough to grab some time to get some of Lawrence Zarian’s expert tips. His book is titled “Lawrence Zarian’s 10 Commandmends for the Perfect Wardrobe”, so we thought we’d ask him for some of his commandments for the perfect summer wardrobe. What is your favorite trend for this summer? My favorite trend for men this summer is COLOR. BELLO
I love that there are so many options and so much color for men right now. It’s fun to see men express themselves finally with bold, bright color. So how should men incorporate color into their wardrobe? I suggest they start with “stylish” baby steps and first find the right color that works for them. Then, start slow with a colorful polo or plaid shirt. Also, you can easily incorporate a colorful tie or pocket square into your existing wardrobe. Or have some fun by adding cool, colorful socks they’re fun and they definitely show off your playful side. My twin brother Gregory LOVES his colorful socks and shows them to everyone. What is your least favorite trend for summer?
The one trend that makes me nuts is NEON for men. It’s loud and just plain obnoxious. Say NO 2 NEON. Thank you. :) (Mind you, this was said with love) With the summer being wedding season, what are good summer suit options for men? I will always be a fan of a classic khaki or seersucker 2piece suit. Now, IF you want to step outside your box and buy a colorful suit, I really like bold midnight blue, rich powerful purple or a gorgeous grey. So many designers have jumped on the “color” bandwagon, it’s all about finding the right suit that suits you, your budget and your lifestyle. The Mens Store at Macy’s is a personal favorite with options and sizes for everyone!!

Is there any way to wear a Hawaiin shirt and still be fashionable? To Hawaiin shirt or not Hawaiin shirt? That is the question. They can be great for summer and especially for vacation, but I have a problem when men wear these shirts to events like concerts or nice restaurants or the theatre (with a laugh) because that’s just wrong, wrong, wrong. What do you think the biggest mistake men make when it comes to fashion? Tucking in their shirts when they’re NOT wearing a suit. It’s such a strong style statement from the 80’s ,and it just looks and feels outdated. Plus, men have bellies, we all do, but when you tuck in your shirt, it just makes you and your belly look bigger. #untuck. Now let’s talk about you. What are some of your favorite things in your personal wardrobe? I always feel handsome in my Hugo Boss suits. I love me my Hugo Boss. LOVE. And IF I want to feel sexy, I go to my pieces from John Varvatos. He designs clothes for MEN. I love that. As for my eyewear, its all about my Sama frames it truly is the perfect fit for me. You’ve mentioned you don’t give people make overs, you give them makebetters. Please explain. I feel that once my work is done, these amazing people feel better about themselves and IF they like themselves better, everything in their life will be... better. I so love what I do and love that I can in some small way, turn someone’s “spirit” back on with a little love, glue, and glitter. Will your book focus on these makebetters? The book will basically break down my style commandments and the simple steps it takes to create your perfect wardrobe for your body type, age and especially your budget. I believe that we should give back what we get and that is what this book is about... giving women the simple, basic tools they need to not only transform their look and their life but how they feel about themselves on the inside. Beauty does and always will come from within!!
What do you love the most about your business? I love that I get to help people feel better about themselves. I’m also extremely blessed to work in a business that I truly love. I also have such a wonderful support team of producers that continue to call and put me on their shows. That in itself is a true blessing. I love my peeps at Live with Kelly and Michael, The Steve Harvey Show, and Rachael Ray. These producers work extremely hard and continue to produce great TV! I’m also blessed to have an amazing family and a group of friends that love and celebrate my success. It makes everything so much sweeter. BELLO

A.Z. ARAUJO words By Fabio Fernandez
The game of thrones... I mean, Fashion, is a dangerous one. One must always be at their best. Always ready, whether it be in the spotlight, for success, or just simply to survive. Now is that time of year when all the collections are coming together for the upcoming Spring Summer season, but the ones who ready are Swimwear Designers. The upcoming month of July is a magical month, where the crème de la crème of Swimwear designers showcase their collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim and flock to the sandy Miami Beaches to show us who they are and what they offer. Some designers showcasing are Mara Hoffman, Diesel, Oakly (yes the eyewear company), and countless others which are days away from showing us why they’re on top, but the main name that comes to mind is A.Z Araujo of A.Z Araujo Official. Being in the fashion industry, you will always hear the phrase ”it’s cut throat”, and that’s because it is! For swimwear designers it’s double the competition. They’re always competing with regular collections and also ones in their own design category. They have to work extremely hard to be able to achieve their work and visions while, at the same time, please the masses on top of everything else. The month of July is the month that everything and everyone comes together at Swim Week inside the tents inside the Raleigh Hotel, and every year, at the end of Swim Week, one designer is always praised and talked about the most. Which one will it be this year? We have our money on Mr. A.Z Araujo. A.Z was born in Rio De Janeiro and grew up in Boquierao, Brazil. town, and, after finishing his studies, A.Z returned to Rio to pursue a career in acting where A.Z starred in a very popular Brazilian soap opera in the mid 90´s. Cool right?! While acting, A.Z became friends with the soap opera’s wardrobe designer. This is where he developed his taste for fashion and style. A.Z began working as an assistant to Hilda Marinho, a famous costume designer in Rio de Janeiro where he learned the classic details, bespoke tailoring and the use of the best fabrics in the world at the atelier of Ms. Marinho. Until one day, he decided to spread his wings and move to New York, seven years ago, to discover fashion on a much grander scale. A.Z Araujo collections always combine the sexiness of Brazil with the chic edgy presence of New York. A.Z focuses a huge part of the collections on mastering the Brazilian cut and feel, and rounds out the collections with a few dresses and separates, aside from his swimwear pieces. This is a challenge in all designer’s phase. As a designer, one must keep a consistent collection, be well rounded, and must always know their consumer. One thing that keeps him above the rest, is the countless celebrities in attendance and walking his shows annually- from ‘Real Housewives’, Adriana De Moura and Cynthia Bailey, to basketball player, Matt Barnes. Go out and support swimwear designers. Branch out from the normal swim suit or piece you normally would wear. There are many swimwear designers, but the ones on top are the ones showing at Swim Week. They are the innovators who come up with the best that you later see trickling down on the racks at department stores. Get that one of a kind piece. After all, it is swim season.
THE SECRET GARDEN OF
OLAYA
Clio Olaya was born in Esmeraldas, a small beach town in the Northern part of Ecuador. At the age of 17, she won the title of Miss Ecuador to represent her country in the Miss World Pageant, THAN moved to Italy where she worked as a model for top Italian designers. Clio pursued studies in design and graduated as a Fashion Designer at the International Academy of Fashion in Toronto Canada. HER background in design was vital to her vision of pattern making, fabric cuttings and choice of textiles when starting her swimwear line. She currently lives in Los Angeles, and has been focusing on creating her swimwear line OLAYA BEACH, inspired by the exotic beaches of her country, the sultry smiles and sun kissed skin of her people. Her designs conjure simplicity executed in high quality fabrics and styles such as romantic ruffles, twisted bandeaus, adorned buckles, branded cord ends, lacing and beading. It is Olaya Beach’s bouquet of design choices and quality fabrics that make her line unique and suitable for all beautiful women of size, shape, and age. We were lucky enough to sit with Olaya and ask her a few questions about her amazingly creative brand and new collection: What was the inspiration behind your latest collection? The vibrancy and richness of culture in South American countries was definitely the biggest source of inspiration. I, especially, love the colors of the Brazilian flag; the brightness of the yellow
that represents the sun and the green, representing the lush terrain. We’re excited to be hosting an event next year in Brazil, in celebration of the World Cup. Do you find that your background and upbringing influence your creative process? My background constantly inspires me. Growing up in a beach town that had such diversity in people and nature, it really helped my creativity to flow. I always look back to the wonderful things I have experienced - the people I’ve met, the food, the drinks, my surroundings and travels. I really take inspiration from everything and transform it into an idea or a design, but always referencing my upbringing. What are some of the big trends that are in this season for swimwear? I think sporty meets fashion is really big this season. Bikinis and one pieces that may have a sportier cut but still has detailing that make it current and fashion-forward. What are your predictions for next season? As far as colors, some earthy and sunbaked hues. Prints and patterns are sure to be a trend for the following season with flora and fauna designs. And of course, my own design with the sunglasses pattern! * About Olaya Beach Inspired by the endless beaches of Esmeraldas, Olaya Beach brings you a new line, where shape, feel and sensuality are superlative in every collection. Using only innovative and comfortable fabrics, along with attention to high quality finishes and hardware, Olaya Beach exemplifies the true luxury swimwear collection that is simple, yet elegant, and always classic. * ECOSYSTEM FRIENDLY And most important of all Eurojersey the company from where Olaya buys fabrics is part of the WORLD LAND TRUST a non-profit organization set up with the aim of transforming areas with habitats showing exceptional levels of biodiversity that are at risk into protected nature reserves. This partnership with the World Land Trust and Eurojersey guarantees that for every meter of fabric sold they will save a meter of the rainforest in Argentina. BELLO

Male models have unpredictable schedules. One day they’re at a fitting, the other a casting, sometimes at a photoshoot, or a runway show. Those who are wanted, get booked. But, it’s cyclical, like fashion trends. They could be in demand one season, and out for another. With a presence that harks to the 90’s aesthetic, Bryce Thompson is tall, broad and fit. There is nothing that resembles the lankiness that’s currently prevalent on the runways. He’s athletic and makes no qualms about it. In fact, his healthy, corn-fed look (by way of South Africa) makes him very popular in the social media world. Now, taking what he learned from being in front of the camera, he’s stepping behind it to act as photographer. Who could ask for a better support system than by working with someone who’s in the same profession? Bello was able to get in a few questions about his new passion before jetting off to Germany. Models never have too much free time.
BELLO
What was the reason to go behind the camera?
Do you have a particular style/aesthetic?
Any tips you took from photographers you’ve worked with?
I actually started behind the camera, as a sports photographer, trying my hand at real people portraits. I used to publish a Paintball magazine back home in South Africa, so I started taking simple shots of players for the magazine. But, it’s nothing like what I shoot today.
Since setting up my studio space in New York, I’ve seen a style that tends to revert to by the end of most shoots. It’s a very classic feel, with an emphasis on skin texture and shadows. I’m not bold enough to compare my work to anyone famous.
The general consensus from established photographers is always the same: create your own style, and shoot to learn.
Do you find it easier to be in front or behind it? Why?
How about your favorite photographers?
I find it easier to be in front of the camera. All I have to do there is be my goofy self. As a photographer, there are many variables to consider. It’s pretty easy by comparison being a male model; you are never really too far from your comfort zone.
I often turn to images from Bruce Weber, Mario Testino, Mert and Marcus, as well as Mariano Vivanco. They are all inspirational. When I think about my favorite photographers, I often go straight to Patrick Demarchelier and Peter Lindbergh. Do you have any mentors? With every field of work, you could look back to where your ethic started, regardless of your field of expertise. I think my father still remains to be the biggest influence in my work standards and ethic. But, with that being said, there have been scores of generous photographers whom I have modeled for, who encouraged and guided my photography.
BELLO
Are there any dream projects or subjects you’d like to photograph? I would love to do a portrait series with Catherine McNeil, she is just such a beauty, with such an intense character. Besides her, I have a long list of models and people to shoot. I just need to find the right projects to get all of them involved.

ISRAEL BROUSSARD
Teen King WORDS BY DIO ANTHONY PHOTOGRAPHY ANGELO KRITIKOS
The 18-year-old opens up about playing a convicted burglar, Fame, and realizing it’s all just a fantasy world after all. An average teen hurries his way into the doors of The Hollywood Towers—nestled in the Franklin Village area of Hollywood. A building so heavy in both energy and tinseltown secrets—Israel’s mere presence in the five-story structure seems almost fitting, if not downright appropriate. He’s humble, polite, and engaging. All respectable human qualities of course, and most of all, expected. But in Israel’s case, everything seems to have a sprinkle of normality carefully distributed. At just 18-years young, the Mississippi native has been overseas and back while promoting his latest flick, The Bling Ring, a film based on true events, in which Broussard plays Marc, a teenage burglar, and just one of many in a burglary bunch known as The Bling Ring. Yet all the good fortune that has come his way is not lost on the young actor. Just last month, he attended Cannes to premier the film at the prestigious festival, along with his cast and director; Sofia Coppola. “Cannes was an honor. It felt like an entity of its own,” he tells me. “Walking the red carpet, all the butterflies; it’s real. To be with Sofia for ‘The Bling Ring’, that was the cherry on top. It made it all the more authentic.” Coppola, 42, seems to have a knack for these almost candy-like, sweet & sour, off-kilter coming-of-age films, and though the release of her 2006 Marie Antoinette sprung off to the presses with mixed reviews, this time around, with The Bling Ring, she got it right— depicting a group of Hollywood misfits essentially living up to a “sex, drugs, and rock-roll” motto and using the homes of their favorite celebrities as their venue, and occasional playground. Though his face and name continue to show up everywhere from lit up Cinema marquees around the world to magazine and newspaper headlines, Israel Broussard remains the same guy he was months before, when any mention of “The Bling Ring” still triggered a memory of a series of unfortunate events, that led to sorrow and loss on one side, and serious jail time on the other. Upon asking him what’s changed the most in his life now that the film’s out and about, not only in theaters, but across the inter-web with tumblr accounts devoted to gifs from the film, and promotional ads so clever, that for a second, have you wishing you were involved in the robberies, he simply says, “I’ve been wearing a lot of nice clothes,” with a slight giggle. “I’ve definitely jumped into fashion a lot more than I thought I would.” It’s no surprise when you’re rockin’ thousand dollar Prada suits to premiers as this particular bling ring star has.
suspicion of the acts being committed. However, playing this character has helped Broussard see the frenzy in a slightly different light. “I feel like I’ve come to an understanding for the kids and what they did. I feel like they were just having fun.” He goes on in a reassuring tone, “I’m definitely not taking anyone’s side, but I get where they were coming from and why they did it. I’ve never met the real kids, so I’m not sure if my understanding is correct, and maybe these kids really are just messed up people. I don’t know that.”
He tells me though, that amidst all the flashing lights, he isn’t as cool as he seems. “When I was in elementary school. I felt a lot like Marc, kind of the outcast, and didn’t have many friends. I guess I pulled out that insecurity and wanting for acceptance in this role.”
“It’s hard,” he says referring to the meaning and nature of the film.
With the release of The Bling Ring, nearly five years later after the original case, the film’s content has stirred up wounds of the victims initially affected. In particular, Paris Hilton, whose home was visited by the teen thieves several times before there was ever any
It’s no secret that Broussard is about to experience his own roller coaster of a career. One viewing of the film, and it’s apparent that he’s arrived; sharing the screen with Emma Watson, yet shining all the way through is no easy task. But unlike the film’s theme song, “Crown on the ground” by The Sleigh Bells, Israel Broussard seems to have the crown in his hands. Whether he lets go of it or not, only the future will tell.
What he does know is that his character’s reaction to his first glimpse into what would turn into somewhat of a hobby is, in fact, very similar to how he would react if put in the same situation. “When Rebecca’s stealing the car, my character says, “What the fuck,” the way that line was delivered sounded more like something I would actually say.”
“If I root for these kids then I feel bad. But it’s kinda like a guilty pleasure.” If I root for the cops, then its like, well then I’m rooting for Paris Hilton. The real light and real truth here is how strong all this pop-culture obsession stuff really is,” he says, in an almost pensive tone. “Sofia did a good job. She doesn’t force an opinion on you. You’re kind of just left in your seat, not knowing what to think. But only after she jolts you around like a roller coaster.”

His album “The Graduation” was a really important album for me in terms of me getting into and listening to rap. Getting involved with Twisted was a very creative process all-around. I went in a couple of times and had a lot of conversations with the directors and producers of the pilot. It was quite a long process. They really cared about finding the right guy and wanted to do it right. I had a

lot of fun bringing in my own version of Danny and making sure we were all on the same page regarding the character. I’m learning now, more as an actor, that the genre doesn’t only change the way things are written, but also the style that it’s acted in. Victorious, for me, was kind of a leap in another direction. I had to learn a new set of skills. Speaking loudly so everyone could hear you and then nailing a joke. Sitcom jokes are like music. It’s very much like a pattern. I’ve done stage and one-hour dramas before, Twisted lets me get back to that.

SPOTLIGHT
Don’t Fret, We’ve Got You Covered. (‘TEENWOLF’) For all those fans out there mourning the demise of Colton Hayne’s involvement with ‘Teen Wolf,’ don’t fret, I know where your heart really lies. It’s not in Jackson’s conniving ways, his ability to go from civil to Jerk douchebag in .5 seconds, or his sometimes great taste in button up shirts. What you’re really mourning here is Jackson in all his shirtless glory. I know, I know. You don’t have to tell me. But we’ve got news for all you droolers out there, me included. The Carver twins, who will be playing the on-screen alpha twins in the ‘Teen Wolf’ world, are giving us just what the Doctor ordered after Jackson’s departure. And this photo can attest to it. This brings ease to my mind, and I’m sure it will bring the same to yours. Teen Wolf will be back to its hairy ways; it’s just a matter of time, shirtless hotties included. I’m not sure whom I should thank; MTV execs for having a good eye when it came to casting these two? Or the twins’ trainer who whipped these two into tiptop shape for our viewing pleasure. Check out a sneak peek of the twins workin’ hard to get and stay in shape.
Awkward Retrospect: The Calm before the series finale New Guy, Blood & Paris (‘AWKWARD’) ‘Awkward’ is back, and rightfully so because it was awkward not having anything to eat ice--cream to on those nights that I don’t have to describe any further, because ice--cream pretty much stands for a notion of its own. With the return of one of television’s most darling series’, creator Lauren Iungerich has thrown us a wildcard. A hot, new smart guy. That’s right, another guy, as if we weren’t having enough issues deciding whom we liked more already. This new entity comes in the form of Colin Jennings. A preppy dressed, Edward Cullen-hair smarty-pants, and I’m not mad about it one tiny bit. But there’s a lot going on this year at Palos Verdes high school, and it’s only the first day of junior year. Europe is the ultimate love bird creator... Or Annoying couple creator. Tamara and Jake have returned from their summer long European trip, and they’re more in love than ever. Spitting out nicknames left and right, most of them in another language. They’re pretty much Gomez and Morticia Adams in present day. If Morticia had a new do and Gomez went Blonde. Min’s a late bloomer, I mean bleeder. That’s right, Min, although for some reason seemed like the oldest of the bunch, is just getting her period. And lucky for her, there weren’t any Carrie--esque scenes when it came to her discovery. After all Valerie the counselor would not last a second in a locker room full of screaming teen girls. She’s flee or join em’... Sad but true, Val.

The Face of Beauty by Quinn Melia Craig
People Magazine recently named Gwyneth Paltrow “The Worlds Most Beautiful Woman” in an issue dated April 4, 2013. Given the massive amount of backlash the magazine received for having made this assessment, it is safe to assume the old adage still stands: Beauty is (indeed) in the eye of the beholder. That being said, there are other factors which, standing apart from personal preference, play a significant role in how we as a society define beauty. These factors are known as trends. In much the same way as the fashion industry, the beauty industry is a revolving door of trends - constantly changing and imposing upon our perception of what is beautiful. Every decade brings about new a new challenge that we either revolt against (think 1960’s hippie chic and free love) or find opportunity in (the working women and power suits of the 1980’s), resulting in an inevitable shift in how we, as women, wish to be perceived. The women we idolize as having successfully lived-up to the challenge by portraying themselves in a manner that is congruent to the current shift in trends become the new faces of beauty...at least for a given decade. Over the past five decades, beauty trends have come and gone and, on occasion, have come back again. With every transition, the image we hold in our heads of the ideal woman has been tweaked and the woman we long to look more like changes. The following women represent this evolution of beauty. Farrah Fawcett – 1970’s There was an effortlessness that accompanied the beauty of the 70s – at least during daylight hours. Still reeling from the hippie phase of the late 60’s, a slender frame accentuated with slight curves and a sun-kissed glow was the sought after look. Farrah perfected it all. Michelle Pfieffer – 1980’s The women of the 80’s wanted it all. It was no longer enough to be slim, women needed to be toned as well. Strong, natural brows accompanied by shocking make up shades and overdone hair were common place, but the women that could remove it all and still demand our attention stood out above the crowd. Insert, Michelle Pfiefer. Cindy Crawford and Kate Moss – 1990’s The 90’s were the decade of the super model. Cindy Crawford, a gorgeous brunette with a strong, athletic and curvy build represented what most women (and men) perceived at the time as absolute perfection. However, there was also another beauty trend on the rise. The desire to be fit was slowly being replaced with a desire to be extremely thin. Kate Moss, a waifish blonde beauty was a pioneer of this dangerous beauty ideal. Angelina Jolie – 2000’s The beginning of a new era pushed everything to the limits. Long legs, thin arms, impossibly slight frames and voluptuous breasts were all equally coveted. However, the reality was that apart from a select few such as Angelina Jolie, the majority of women could never attain such a radical perception of beauty without pricey enhancements. Hence, this decade also saw a large rise in the number of women opting for cosmetic surgery. Beyonce – Today While most women today still would prefer a smaller waistline, there seems to be a much greater emphasis on the importance of overall health in terms of beauty. Such may be why People chose Gwyneth Paltrow as this year’s Most Beautiful. Here new book “It’s All Good” boasts about the benefits of a lifestyle that excludes itself from anything which may be considered harmful to ones body – meat, sugar, sun – you name it, its out! However, a more agreeable selection would likely be last year’s chart topper, Beyonce. Her incredibly toned physic, noticeable curves, glowing skin and seemingly well-rounded lifestyle are without question the new face of beauty.

Undone messy hair is looking more chic than ever as seen in Giambattista Valligi 2013 Spring Summer couture collection. It almost was an “I just woke up” look/3 day binge with a center part, but I’m in love with it! This look goes perfect with natural makeup and an unfitted loose top.
Sleek slicked back hair can make any woman instantly look edgy and high fashion instantly. Versace’s Spring/Summer collection rocked our world this season. Wear this look with a smokey eye and a bold daring outfit and make a statement this summer!
Deep side parts are making a comeback this summer with a twist, or should I say knot? Elie Saab showed us, with his Spring/Summer collection, to let the dress speak for itself this season. Smooth deep parts with a low pulled back knot are becoming one of my favorite looks; very elegant and wearable.
1. Start with a quarter size dollop of Oribe Crème for Style. Work through dry hair, root to ends, focusing on the top of the head to tame frizz and get that sleek look. Make a center part then blow dry down aiming at the part to set it (flatiron roots if necessary). Guar Gum Derivate eliminates frizz and static. www.oribe.com 2. Next spray Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray midshaft to ends of damp or dry hair; let dry naturally or blowdry with a diffuse to get that matte messy finish. Ascophyllum Nodosum Extract helps with moisturizing hair while still adding body and thickness. www.bumbleandbumble.com
1. Start with a dollop of Oribe Gel Serum. Emulsify in hands and work through damp hair, roots to midshaft. Then comb through and let air dry. This magical, goldflecked potion with active moisturizing agents brings sophisticated hold with shine rather than stiffness. www.oribe.com 2. Next blowdry midshaft to ends straight (flatiron if necessary). Spray with Oscar Blandi Lacca hairspray in short bursts from about 12 inches away to set this look. Natural humectants, such as Sugar provide moisture & prevent static. www.oscarblandi.com
1. Start with a small amount of Oribe Smooth Style Serum and work through damp hair root to ends. BEAUTY BAR BEAT THE HEAT, HUMIDITY, AND SHINE #1 DR. DENNIS GROSS Clarifying Colloidal Sulfur Mask www.dgskincare.com The summer is a time full of humidity and perspiration… this leads to clogged pores for many of us. This incredible new product from Dr. Dennis Gross is a dermatologist formulated mask that clarifies the skin by absorbing excess oil and acne-causing bacteria. The advanced “time absorbent” formula works especially well when worn overnight. Pores will appear reduced, blackheads will be minimized, and overall clarity will be enhanced with key ingredients like Colloidal Sulfur, Bentonite, and Prickly Pear.
#2 BAUDELAIRE 2 in 1 Oil Absorbing Primer + Mask www.baudelaire.com.au Created in Australia, this wonderful primer + mask is made up from a magnesium hydroxide formulation (just like Milk of Magnesia, commonly known as MOM). The oil absorbing effectiveness of this sea water derived ingredient is extremely effective and long lasting throughout the day when used as a primer. It can also be used as a mask and applied generously at night a few times a week to slow down overall oil secretions on the skin. I have also discovered that it works amazingly well as a spot treatment to clear those annoying occasional acne flare ups everyone seems to get even if their skin if usually perfect.
#3 NOT YOUR MOTHER’S HAIRCARE Travel Size Essentials www.nymbrands.com I’ve been loving the hair products from this brand for some time now, and recently they introduced some travel size essentials for any of you that love a weekend getaway or a full day at the beach this summer. Some of my faves from this set are the SHE’S A TEASE HAIRSPRAY because it fights humidity and keeps a top knot or ponytail strongly in their place. If you want the beachy look but the sea is not on your vacation destination list, then try spraying BEACH BABE TEXTURIZING SEA SALT SPRAY in your damp hair and giving it a quick blow dry. This will create just enough salty texture to mimic a day at the beach. These products are all made in the USA and are gluten/cruelty free. LOVE!
#4 SMASHBOX Camera Ready Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Dark Spot Correcting CC Cream www.smashbox.com Makeup with the benefits of skincare? Yes, please! If you love everything about BB, but need a little help with dark spots, CC is for you. It features all of the amazing benefits of BB - primes, perfects, protects with SPF 30 - hydrates and controls oil, plus it visibly evens dark spots, sun spots and post-acne marks. Think of it as BB with that extra oomph.
#5 NEUTROGENA Micro Mist Airbrush Sunless Tan www.neutrogena.com Staying out of the sun this summer cause you have skin that easily burns? Feeling left out cause all of your friends are golden bronzed goddesses? Well, Neutrogena has you covered this summer. MicroMist Airbrush Sunless Tan applies like a professional airbrush spray for an all over worry-free, “just back from the beach tan”. This revolutionary, ultra-fine mist covers evenly, for easy, no-rub application. The one-touch continuous spray works at any angle to tan hard-to-reach places--even your back. It dries fast and won’t clog pores. Now, random streaks, missed spots and orange palms are a thing of the past. It’s oil-free, dries in 5 minutes, and is available in Deep Tint and Medium Tint.
#5 KATE SOMERVILLE Serum Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF50+ www.katesomerville.com If you’re looking for a high spf to wear under your makeup throughout the day that won’t feel thick and greasy, then try this Kate Somerville serum! It’s been one of my faves for months! It is extremely lightweight—and free of oils, parabens, and alcohol—making it ideal for everyday use. Scientifically advanced ingredients soak in and dry quickly to keep skin from feeling greasy, sticky, or chalky. Oil-free formula is perfect for oily or acne-prone complexions. A patented complex of SPF-boosting Bentonite and Picea Excelsa Bud provides higher sun protection levels, using less sunscreen. The anti-aging elements in Vitamins A, C, E, and Aloe Vera support overall skin health. BELLO

Coming off the heels of a successful 2012 Olympic appearance, British gymnast, Max Whitlock, has continued his success well into 2013. He recently earned a stack of medals (one of each) during the European Championships earlier this year and currently has his sights set to the World Championships later this year. With so much already accomplished at such a young age, it’s a wonder to think that things have only just begun for

NO ORDINARY ROUTINE
What gymnastics routine do you prefer most and why? Out of the six of the apparatus in gymnastics, I most prefer my pommel horse routines, especially the new routine that I’m working on now where I’m trying to hopefully set a new world record with the difficulty starts score. Mental strength is just as valuable as physical and agility training in your sport; so how do you train the mind? I always set goals for myself in my mind, usually they are very ambition, but I believe that if you don’t set yourself goals then it’s hard to achieve anything. My mindset and focus is on the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. The British men’s gymnastics teams had not medaled at the European Championships or Olympic Games in over 100 years, until recently... and you were a part of both teams (Congratulations!). How rewarding was it to help snap such a drought? It was very rewarding [to be part of the team]. We were all very proud especially with our Bronze medal in London 2012 in front an amazing home crowd. It was an honor to stand on the podium representing my country.

What was the best advice you were ever given?
the other as part of your country’s team. How satisfying, yet different, was each win?
The best advice that I have been given for competitions is to stay chilled and enjoy it. So that is what I try and do.
Both medals were amazing – the team one because it was the first medal in 100 years, and it was really good to do it with a great team. But my individual medal on the pommel horse means a lot to me, and I’m very proud of it.
Nutrition is an important aspect to training and competing athletes. How much attention do you give to what is going into your body as fuel? It is very important to me what I am eating and drinking on a lead up to a competition, but I generally just eat healthy to try and make sure my energy levels are high. But I must say I do enjoy my food and treat myself after the competitions have finished.
When you’re not training, what are we likely to find you doing for enjoyment? on. What are some of your favorite movies (action, drama and comedy genres)?
What one item must you pack (when traveling) to keep in shape if you can’t get to a gym?
My favorite films at the moment are probably the ‘Fast & Furious’ films. I like a lot of action films.
If I was to go away, I have a small set of training bars that I can use to do conditioning exercises

When I’m not training, I like going out for meal and to the cinema with my family and my girlfriend. What sort of longterm plans do you have in mind for your life and career? My next main target is to get to Rio [Olympic Games] 2016. I also would like to have my own gym to give other people the opportunity to achieve what I have achieved.
