INTRO “Be sexy. Be true. Be wild. Be you.” U nknown When I think of the word sexy, I think of everything from a hot summer day on the beach to a cold winter’s night cuddled in front of a fire. I imagine a lazy day sleeping in and laying around all day or walking through a small town, hand in hand, stopping off at a cafe listening to the music of local artists. Sexy can be anything. Sexy can be anyone. Welcome to our very first “Sexy” issue.... Gracing our cover pages, we give you the extremely sexy, Kevin Zegers. As he promotes his new highly anticipated film, ‘Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’, we would like to congratulate the newlywed who married his girlfriend this past week. Our second female cover is the ultra sexy Lyndsy Fonseca from the CW’s hit series, ‘Nikita’ also promoting the action packed, sure hit film, ‘Kick Ass 2’. In our Entertainment section, leading this content with an inside cover, we present to you the gorgeous and sexy, Robbie Amell (‘The Tomorrow People’). We also have the handsome and charming, Arjay Smith (‘Perception’), ‘True Blood’’s hometown hottie, Todd Lowe, newcomer on the scene, sweet and sexy, Alexander Koch (‘Under the Dome’), and Dublin born rugedly dapper, Kevin Ryan (‘Copper’). Leading us into the fashion section, we have double the sexy, double the fun, sexysquared twins Charlie and Max Carver from MTV’s hit show, ‘Teen Wolf’, who gives us insight on their roles and storyline in the newest season. In our revamped beauty section, the stunningly sexy Angela Sarafyan (‘Paranoia’) leads this segment with an amazing beauty story. Our Art section is headed by the talented director, Robert Luketic. Kevin Zegers walks around barefoot on the set of our Santa Monica photo shoot, showing off the names of his nieces and nephews he’s had tattooed on his toes. It’s a small indication of how large of a presence his family has had in the actor’s life. “It’s easier to keep your head on if you have a foundation of where home is and where your base is at,” he explains. “I’m really close with my family. It’s very easy to get caught up in the whole deal.” The “whole deal” he refers to is the Hollywood machine, the industry he’s been a part of ever since he started working as an actor the age of 6. And after steadily working on both big and small screens for the past two decades, he’s keeping his family as close as ever while he prepares to unleash what is possibly his largest project to date, this month’s ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.’ It’s the bigbudget adaptation of the bestselling book series about a young girl who learns of her demonhunting ancestry and joins an invisible race of supernatural warriors called Shadowhunters in New York City. Zegers plays the closeted Alec Lightwood, a young Shadowhunter who figures into the film’s big battle between Good and Evil. When reading drafts of the script, Kevin grew more and more excited at the opportunity to play someone he has never played before – and has never really seen on film before.

“The thing that I didn’t want was for him to be some generic, prototypical character, what people would expect from the gay character. For me, it was about creating a character whose sexuality didn’t matter…I actually don’t think it’s that big of a fucking issue anymore. Certainly not with me, and especially not with the generation that read this book. So it wasn’t something that we really focused on. But one thing I was aware of was the fact that there haven’t been many great examples of a really strong gay character, one of the leads in a really big movie who happens to be gay and who’s also kind of a badass.” His character’s badassery happens to be one of the draws of the novels, and it’s what drew the actor to the role. ”I certainly didn’t think too much about what the fans expected, because everyone wants a different thing. Some people think I’m too old, some think I’m not tall enough, or my hair isn’t dark enough. You could get caught up in that, but it’s not my personality to be hyperfocused on it…It’s out of our hands now. We made the best movie we could make. I’m really happy about it, and hopefully people like it as much as we do.” Having just returned from his first trip to Comic Con in San Diego (“it was a crazy, crazy day”), Zegers is trying to keep it all together as he heads into a jampacked couple of months. There’s ‘The Colony,’ a thriller he shot with Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton that’s out on VOD this fall, ‘The Curse of Downers Grove’ with Bella Heathcote and Lucas Till, all of the press he’s got lined up for ‘City of Bones,’ a trip to Vancouver to start working on the sequel, and – oh yeah – his wedding. “My wife is very proactive with that stuff,” he tells me as he talks about all the details that have gone into his upcoming nuptials in New Jersey. But one thing that he couldn’t have prepared for was the passing of his friend, ‘Glee’ star Cory Monteith. The two had worked together on the film ‘All The Wrong Reasons’ and had become bosom buddies ever since. News of the actor’s alleged drugrelated death hit Zegers hard. “He’s probably the closest person I’ve ever lost,” he reflects. “It was a heavy and weird month. Cory was the nicest man I knew. It’s a fucking horrible disease,” he says, referring to his own sobriety and past struggles with addiction. “By the grace of God, I’m not dead. I think it’s something that constantly reveals itself as something that happens to people who, for whatever reason, don’t get well, and it was by no lack of him trying or anyone else trying to help him get well. Eventually, your body just says, ‘No, it’s enough.’ But it doesn’t make it any less sad or tragic. I think the problem people had was that he looked healthy and he never showed the struggles he was having.” Last month, Zegers traveled to Vancouver to be with Monteith’s family and friends, including actress Lea Michele, who had been dating Cory at the time. “There was a group of us who were there for the whole finding out up until now, and it’s been very, very strange.” After returning to Los Angeles with some of Monteith’s ashes, Zegers had time to reflect on his own life and look at his loved ones with a renewed perspective. “It’s a very momentumbased business, riding the waves of success and failure,” he says. “Collectively, my life has gotten better in the last couple of years, personally and professionally. I’m just trying to be appreciative and thankful, show up, and do the right thing.” BELLO

Lyndsy Fonseca has conquered sudsy situations on ‘The Young and the Restless,’ brushed shoulders with the duplicitous denizens of Wisteria Lane on ‘Desperate Housewives,’ and defeated more than a few deadly foes throughout three seasons of ‘Nikita,’ but what’s a girl to do when she’s on the receiving end of a marriage proposal...from the same sex...at Comic Con of all places? “Last year,” she giggles, “we did a panel, and a girl proposed to me. I had my first female proposal that day.” The 26yearold actress is enjoying the wave she’s riding ever since she started playing Alex on the CW’s spy thriller back in 2010. But that wave is (gently) crashing now that the actionpacked drama is coming to a close with an abbreviated final season this fall (an order of six episodes was delivered by the network so that storylines can neatly wrap up and give fans some muchneeded closure).
BELLO
BELLO
“I think it’s great,” Fonseca says of the chance to go out with a bang. “The network could’ve canceled us, and they didn’t. They wanted, like the rest of us, an ending to the story we’ve been working on for three years. It’s nice that we can play with how this can end. I’m really looking forward to it.” Before she heads back to Toronto to start shooting those final episodes, she will have endured her fourth trip to ComicCon, the annual fanboyfriendly pop culture convention down in San Diego. “There’s definitely a mental preparation involved,” she says, bracing herself for the hustle and bustle of the festivities. Not only is she promoting ‘Nikita,’ she’s also making a few rounds with press to talk about ‘KickAss 2,’ the sequel to 2010’s highoctane teen superhero saga. Although she reprises her role as Katie in the film, she wants to make one thing clear: it’s a small role. “They shot the film while I was shooting season 3 of ‘Nikita,’” she explains. “So I had a day to fly to London and do a scene. I was happy to be included at all. It’s such a great story with such great people.” She’s also thankful for the ‘Nikita’ crew allowing her to make the brief trip to the UK. But once she wrapped there, it was back to Toronto and back to her own kind of asskicking. Would she make a good Toronto tour guide? “After three years, it’s really just started to feel like home. I got friends there who aren’t in the industry. I got my favorite juice bar (Belmonte Raw) and my favorite dog park. So it doesn’t feel like a foreign place anymore.”

But what will happen once ‘Nikita’ fades into that good night? Lyndsy has one thing on her mind: settling down in L.A. in a home she can call her own. “I’m trying to get my first place because I’ve been basically living out of suitcases for three years, and now that this show has an end date, I’m like, ‘Oh wow, I can actually have a real house and actually set myself up somewhere.’ So that’s become a priority.” Also on her agenda, is playing the role of tourist in her own backyard. She’s a fan of experiencing all of the SoCal culture she can absorb. Trips to the ballet and Hollywood Forever Cemetery movie screenings are among her faves. “I’m a total geek tourist in L.A. I go to all the museums, but I pretty much stay away from Hollywood Boulevard.”
5 PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS LYNDSY FINDS SEXY: 1. “The beach on an overcast day with sweaters and blankets. That can be very sexy.” 2. “Kate Winslet. Hands down.” 3. “A man with a confident yet humble heart.” 4. “Someone who expresses themselves with their body. Like dancing or in sports or martial arts.” (SIDENOTE: “I’m obsessed with ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ I’m a total nerd when it comes to that show. I think it’s the best show that’s ever been created!”) 5. “People who love their family.”

TOMORROW’S MAN WITH A SHOW BOUND TO BE A HIT, A SEXY AND FAMILIAR LAST NAME, ROBBIE AMELL FINDS HIS PLACE TO SHINE AMIDST THE HOLLYWOOD MACHINE. On an oddly quite street in the heart of “Local Hollywood,” steps away from the trendy area of Franklin Village where LA’s most authentic hipsters on this side of the hill come out to play, and just minutes away from Paramount Studios, home to so many iconic superheroes, sits Robbie Amell, in a rented home, decked out in what seems to be 1960s patio furniture, equipped with limegreen floaties adorning the blue pool water. He’s youthful, but brooding in his own right. Casual, and friendly, even inviting…every prerequisite of a vampire, as told so in the now iconic scene of 2008’s Twilight. But Robbie Amell is no Vampire, not by a long shot—Kinda; he’s a different kind of person, a “Tomorrow Person.” Come fall, along with back to school sale commercials, and sooner sunsets, 25 year old, Amell, will be making his debut, not only to the CW Network, but to the world in a role unlike anything he’s done before as Stephen Jameson on 'The Tomorrow People'. “I’ve really enjoyed the parts that I’ve gotten to play, but I’ve always wanted to play something a little darker, and it’s every kids dream to have superpowers,”says Robbie, who channeled his own childhood wants when playing Supernatural teen, Stephen. Telekinesis and teleportation are just two of the handful of powers he’ll get to have fun with, and thanks to a “significant budget” devoted to visual effects, tuning in and catching a fight scene on 'The Tomorrow People' won't be anything like watching 'Power Rangers', as dear as they might be to one's heart. “It looks good. You can immerse yourself in the world of the show, without loosing it when a teleport looks horrible.” The series is set to be paired up with Arrow the network’s most actionpacked show yet on what The CW has now labeled Amell Wednesdays. “It just kind of happened,” he says. Robbie received the news via a five a.m. phonecall from his cousin, Stephen Amell, The CWs current Golden Boy. “I pick up the phone, and I was so tired, and all he says is Wednesdays at 9, youasshole, and hung up.” Stephen who was in New York at the time, got word of the news before

Robbie, and followed up the newscall with a text message reaffirming what he had just said. “ I woke up to a text message. I thought it was a dream. I full out thought I dreamt him calling me.” Cousin, Stephen Amell, is currently headlining The CW's breakout hit 'Arrow', heading into its sophomore season after a stellar freshman run. Both Toronto natives had their doubts on whether such an ironic arrangement would take place. “It wasn’t until we were doing a promo for Wednesday nights where I kind of leaned over and said, do you realize how insane this is? For one of us to be the lead of a show is massive. For two of us, that’s crazy. For two of us to be on the same network? That’s completely insane. Same network, same night, one after the other is impossible.” Possible it is. But what’s left to the future is does the younger Amell have what it takes to take an adaptation of a 1970s British series and make its American counterpart stand on its own. For starters, a killer physique with an even killer ability to swing punches left and right certainly seem like a necessity for the position, and sure enough Robbie plans to take complete charge. “I’m dedicated as anybody could be,” he says. Upon asking him if he would be performing his own stunts, he was quick to assure me that he’d try his best to do anything and everything they’d allow him to do. “Jeff, who’s one of your stunt coordinators has a full setup at his house in Vancouver, for stunt training. He said he’d bring me out there on weekends. I’ll spend a Saturday fighting,” he says almost childlike with a lightning of excitement in his eyes. With 'The Tomorrow People' being Robbie’s first dive into the action superhero teen genre that has taken America’s youth by storm—Yet having done stints on practically every network known to an entertainment journalist, he’s found his stage at The CW, ready to embark on all the places this new role may take him, he simply says to me, “I’m ready to go.”

Floppy hair, check! Full delicious lips, check! Soulful puppy dog eyes and smoldering smile –triple check. The only problem Alexander Koch (pronounced Coke for all you dirty birdies out there) isn’t your average teen dream. On the new CBS breakout hit ‘Under The Dome,’ he’s a slightly troubled young man (Junior Rennie) with a girl chained by the ankle to a bunk bed in his favorite fallout shelter. Welcome to Chester’s Mill: a place where cows get cut in half and small town baddies are loosely based on Dick Cheney with offspring that resemble James Franco and Andy Samberg’s lovechild. Those are just a couple of the reasons the new series is at the top of our latest lists of obsessions this summer the other being Alex’s incredibly creepy (but at times captivating) logic. Yes, we simply can’t get enough of the derangedbutdelectable Junior. I have a feeling this is just the beginning for Alex, whose future (like his bone structure) is looking pretty damn good from every angle.

BELLO: Your last name, where’s that from? ALEXANDER KOCH: It’s German descent, but my background’s all mixed up: German, Lebanese, amongst other things. I’m a mutt, which is always the best. B: Junior Rennie, great name but what is wrong with that kid? AK: Perfect name right? Junior is the product of a very misled childhood. He wasn’t nurtured. So now he’s grown into himself in all the wrong ways because he wasn’t raised conducive to being… B: … normal? AK: Mmmm yeah, maybe. He lost his mother, and remember who his father is. He encourages him to bully and fight his way through life. I mean look at big Jim. B: Is Big Jim’s character really based on Dick Cheney? AK: You know there was a long political conversation about that. There was talk of Dick Cheney and of George Bush, Jr. A journalist reported that one of Bush’s strong motivations for going after Saddam was “…well he attacked my dad.” Now I don’t know how true that quote is, but it’s very telling, and it’s a type of family dynamic we wanted to portray. B: We see him screaming with rage at the dome. Is he mentally disturbed? AK: A lot of people think that, but I’m not so sure. He’s got issues but I’m very protective of Junior, so I almost get borderline offended at the thought he could be crazy. I have so much love for this character already. B: Can there be a romance between him and Angie? With her chained up? AK: Well, I was encouraged to read John Fowles ‘The Collector’ to get a sense of why Junior would do that. Some insight into that train of thought, that type of obsessive mindset. Yeah, it’s terrible, but in his mind he thinks he’s genuinely protecting her. And trust me, things get a lot worse for the people inside that dome. B: What are you really into? AK: Music, always. I’ll be chaining up my favorite band soon (just kidding). I do love the Black Keys and my friend’s band, The Orwells. They have this great video, it’s like David Lynch meets The Supremes. B: Who in Young Hollywood do you really admire at the moment? AK: Rooney Mara. I find her really intriguing. She seems very unique, I liked the way she explained the auditioning process for ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.’ I really liked her in that movie. B: What attracts you: a) lips, b) brains, c) eyes, or d) personality AK: Personality leading the way, but an amalgamation of all of them. B: Boxer or briefs? AK: Depends on the day. B: What’s your personal style? AK: No flip flops, I’d feel like a tourist. I’m casual though, nothing complicated. Jeans and a Tshirt always works. B: How was your Bello shoot? AK: There was a cool leather bomber jacket I wanted to keep! B: Is ‘Under The Dome’ based on the book or an exact replica? AK: The overall story is an alternate version of the book, an alternate world. The characters are a little redesigned, so there are lots of differences… So it can go to all these new places, these new dark places. B: Did you get to meet Stephen King? AK: He came to our first script table read, and I was so nervous. He’s a literary idol of mine. I was addicted to his short stories. They were all so poignant, they stayed with me. So

when I realized I was going to be playing someone he created, it was surreal. He was having such a good time with the first episode, when the cow gets sliced in half he’s like “Yeah!” He got excited by everything. He told me, “Great read, too bad you are such a twisted lil fucker!” He’s got this really great, interesting, sense of humor, but it’s almost disarming. B: What are you reading right now? AK: I am a bit of a bookie. I just reread ‘The Road’ which is my favorite book. It’s so good, it’s like poetry. It’s a beautiful father and son story. B: You can see beauty in some very bleak places, Alex. AK: I can, I like to find the beauty in the bleak, glass half full even if it’s smashed and ruined. B: Is Junior’s anger causing the dome? AK: That’s one I haven’t heard before. I will neither confirm nor deny that. There’s a violent nature to him, he carries a lot of rage.
BELLO
B: Were you living in Tinseltown prior to shooting in North Carolina? AK: Yep, last summer, I packed up my stuff in my car and just came out to L.A. With nothing planned, I crashed on a friend’s couch and got a place of my own and my first pilot. My life could have gone a completely different way. B: You’ve been described as a mix of James Franco, Adam Brody and Andy Samberg.Thoughts? AK: [Giggling] I sound like a Lonely Island parody, but I will take it. B: If a dome really did appear, where do you hope to be and with who? AK: I’d be in L.A. I really do love L.A. Maybe in a good hiking spot, or near the mountains. Although I’d love to be with my family and friends, having seen what can happen in that scenario. But I’m not so sure that’s such good idea.

Not only has Kevin Ryan wrapped up the second season of BBC America’s ‘Copper,’ he just finished one memorable crosscountry road trip with his father this summer. “It was phenomenal,” he describes. “My dad said it was on his bucket list. So, I got the car sorted out, and we hit a lot of cool cities… it was quite the journey.” The actor knows a thing or two about journeys. Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, Ryan is now basking in the glow of Stateside success as Detective Francis Maguire on the 1860s set crime drama. And much like the show, driving across America provided plenty of opportunities to explore the country’s colorful past. “I loved Tombstone,” he says. “It’s an old Wild West town. There’s gunfights in the street. They put on shows, and everyone is walking around in this 1880s garb. Lots of handlebar mustaches…it was much like being back on the set of ‘Copper.’” As the show’s second season nears its end, he teases what’s in store for the morally ambiguous characters as they live and die in the slums of the Five Points of New York City: “There are a lot of surprises for Maguire...a lot of interesting scenes throughout season 2. You’ll see a lot of isolation with Maguire that he is trying to overcome. He’s in a place of absolution.” In order to prepare himself for the historically accurate role, Ryan did plenty of research, including walking tours of Manhattan’s historic sites and cultural museums and absorbing as much reading material as possible. “The Irish were the lowest in society,” he explains. “The Five Points were worse than any thirdworld country now. Any Irish person who came over thought they were escaping something worse. But little did they know they were walking into a city filled with more disease, more theft, more robbery, and a harder struggle to live.” While he’s thrilled by the

emotional roller coaster on which his character has taken him, this selfproclaimed comic book fan – you may have caught him engaging with fans at ComicCon last month – is also excited to situate himself in Los Angeles and see what the Southern Californian life has to offer. “Right now I’m in Santa Monica,” he beams, “a completely opposite world from the Five Points!” 5 LESSONS HE’S LEARNED FROM HOLLYWOOD 1. “Maintaining focus and working hard is key. Get a balance of that and trying to see a positive in rejection is important.” 2. “If you want to be anyone life, be yourself. I think individualism is a huge thing. I think a lot of actors come out here and try to blend in to what they perceive as ‘the industry.’ And ultimately, being unique, different, and yourself is what people will generally love.” 3. “Jack In The Box burgers are really good!” 4. “Enjoy the journey. That’s something I’ve been trying to do – just enjoying the process.” 5. “Do your thing and challenge yourself. Switching things up is always good. Keeps your muscles fresh.” WHAT’S SEXY (ACCORDING TO KEVIN RYAN): “Confidence, honesty, individuality. I think what’s on the inside can be sexier than just the exterior. And if you have both, then you’re doing well. But some legs and ass is always good!”

If you’re ever lucky enough to be in the presence of Arjay Smith, you should do two things: consider yourself a very lucky being, and secondly sit down and have a chat with him. Holding the title of, quite possibly, the most genuine man in Hollywood, at just 29years old, Arjay Smith deserves everything that has come his way, and all that is coming. On the day of his shoot Arjay Smith waltzes into a Santa Monica home with a topsecret script in tow, his weapon of disguise? A callsheet from the days shoot. Looking the pure image of a hipster, goes skater boy, boldframes glasses included, there’s not much time to pass until his charm hits everyone in the room. During fittings, the stylist rolls up his sleeves while stating, “I want to show your muscles.” Like a wellmannered gentleman he simply complies, and lets her do her job. He then makes his way about the room, going almost unnoticed, and being in every way possible unimposing. Arjay is a treasure box—seemingly normal, yet full of experience and knowledge, but the best part is, he’s an open book, or better yet open box in this case, letting you in, while also understanding he has so much to learn from others. Read on for his thoughts about success, fame, and his humble outlook on it all.

BELLO: What’s it like working on ‘Perception’, which just wrapped its second season? ARJAY SMITH: Working on the show has been one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had in my 20 years of doing this. Simply because I’m surrounded by a cast of respectable veterans. I’ve been in this industry for so long, thankfully, I’ve had an amazing amount of success I’ve been tremendously blessed. But to be around them, we have a high level of respect for each other’s craft. We respect each other’s talent, but we all bring something different to the table. Which makes this beautiful mosaic at the end of the day. So the experience for me is, not only am I having fun, but also I’m learning. When you’re around such classy people as the cast of ‘Perception’, you just gain a lot. I’m constantly a sponge. I’m the youngest one, so I’m gaining a lot, but also I see how they operate as actors who have families. My parents are amazing. They’ve taught me so much. My parents guided me throughout this process in the industry, and I’ve always had their support. I see them and their relationship as a couple. But they can’t teach me how to be like that as an actor in this industry. They’re not actors and actresses. I see how Eric [McCormack] is with his family. So I’m learning that side. Overall, my experience, I mean, there aren’t words that can truly explain the pinnacle and level of joy. B: You’ve grown throughout your career. You were practically a child star as the title character in ‘Allen Strange’, when programming for children was just being discovered, and here you are at 29 yearsold steadily working still. AS: At that time, the way the success came, in season one, they picked us up for two seasons, halfway through season one, we were already picked up for two more. So, we shot two seasons in one year. The show aired for three years, but we only filmed for two. So, it was a lot. I think we were ahead of our times. Now, cable is the route to go if you want to have longevity. That’s not me in any way putting down the major networks. Our show is an ABC show that airs on TNT. But with the major networks, they’re not giving shows that much of
a chance now a days. It’s gotta hit swiftly. Whereas cable gives it a little more time. Let’s it see how it goes for one season, two seasons. It lets it build its audience. If you’re not building an audience with the major networks within a couple of weeks, you’re cut. B: Having said that, how is it that you’ve been able to stray away from the Amanda Bynes ‘route’? You’ve had great success as a child, and it’s carried on to your adult life, much like hers. AS: I feel like the only way to answer that questions is that I am in no way regretful, ashamed, ordisappointed on how my success has come. The way it has come, it’s been super super, humbling, but it’s also come at a very comfortable pace. It’s not too much too soon. It’s a lot. But it’s come in dosages and those dosages have been just the right amount. I always say that if you’re doing this for the fame, for the attention, you’re in the wrong business. 20 years of success has been great, but for the last 20 years, I’ve been doing what I’m passionate about. Someone once told me, Arjay, you’re not an Alist actor, but you are on a list. I said, and I’m happy about that. If I become an alist actor, wonderful, If I don’t, I’m still doing what I love to do. And that’s the bottom line. If you’re not doing what you love to do, find out what your passion is, discover that. I discovered my passion at eight years old, got in the industry when I was 9. By the time I was 10, I was in the union. B: What does the future hold for Arjay Smith? AS: Where I’m going to be next year, only God and the universe knows. But I’m looking forward to it. Wherever I go in my career, because I also want to produce films as well, and maybe it might be the producing world that takes me to that “famous status.” I model myself after certain people whose careers I admire. I love Don Cheadle. He’s so versatile. Mos Def, he was an actor first before he was a rapper. He goes full force in both aspects. Success haskind of surfaced in his life, but he too has been patient.

WORDS BY SCOTT YOUNGBAUER
Bon Temps has its fair share of resident sexy men on ‘True Blood,’ but none are quite cut from the same mold as Terry Bellefleur. The lionmaned Todd Lowe, who played Terry the Iraqi War vet with his heart on his sleeve, brings a wellrounded realness to the ripped and primped men of the HBO drama. As one of the more domestic players in the cast, his scenes with Carrie Preston, who plays the scenestealing Arlene, deliver some of the more memorable dynamics of the show. Terry, as a character, isn’t fussy or aware of appearance, but his aviator sunglasses and blond beard have become his signature style that speaks to the growing number of people who appreciate a more ruggedlooking man. Of all the manicured men on the show, Lowe might just be one of the unsung assets to the male cast for those looking for a scruffy man’s man. A Texas native, Lowe made his way to Los Angeles after starting his career in theater. His breakthrough role came around in 2003 when he was cast in ‘Gilmore Girls’ as the fan favorite Zack Van Gerbig. His start on ‘True Blood’ began as a recurring side character. The cousin of sheriff Andy Bellefleur slowly developed in a more provocative storyline in season 5 when his supernatural backstory was revealed, which began during his tour of duty in Iraq. Season 6 has seen Terry go down a similar dark path building up to an unforgettable climax with his character exiting the show with a bang. “I was told at the beginning of the shooting season,” he remembers. “I got a conference call from my reps telling me that Terry would die this season. I was on my way to put a bid on a house. Thank God I got the call before I wrote the check!” Off set, Lowe dabbles in country music in the indie band Pilbilly Knights, and since his character has received a positive response from the Iraqi veteran community, he’s been able to book small gigs in vet halls along with small Los Angeles bar venues. His acting in the largerthanlife show has been surreal for the humble Lowe, but he enjoys keeping a low profile. “I get the ‘Do I know you from somewhere?’ a lot from waiters and people on the street,’” says Lowe, whose laidback personality seems polar opposite of the highstrung character he plays. In response to leaving the show, Lowe says, “I’ll take away a little money, some great friends, and memories of some proud performances. I hope to find another role that suits me so well.” As for what’s next? “I’m doing a little writing. I hope to put myself in a position where the only one who can kill my character off is myself. Other than that, I’ll keep playing music and reading scripts while hoping for another perfect role.”

‘The Spectactular Now’ (Running time: 100 min)
Europa Report’ (Running
Fresh, funny, and deliciously complex, ‘The Spectactular Now’ is a coming of age love story unlike any other. Featuring a starmaking performance from Miles Teller opposite a radiant and real Shailene Woodley, James Ponsoldt’s followup to 2012’s ‘Smashed’ profiles another pair of young lovers fueled by restless hearts and boozy bravado to equally raw and devastating effect. Sutter Keely (Teller) is living a life that most redblooded American teenage males would dream of. He’s dating a hottie (the talented Brie Larson), working afterschool for a boss who thinks of him as a son (Bob Odenkirk, always welcome) and partying like there’s no tomorrow. Of course, his overworked single mother (the everdependable Jennifer Jason Leigh) wishes that he would help out more at home, and he certainly could afford to focus less on boozing and more on college applications, but hey, the boy’s happy living in the now. That is until he meets shy, good girl Aimee Finicky (Woodley), and everything changes…Sure, it sounds like something straight off of the Nicholas Sparks assembly line of schmaltzy tearjerkers, but have no fear: Ponsoldt and his screenwriters, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (adapting Tim Tharp’s novel) are too smart to engage in trite romantic clichés. Instead, they toss these tired scenarios out the window and allow an unflinching portrait of selfdiscovery and young love to emerge. It is anything but expected. Woodley, so fantastic in ‘The Descendants,’ is youthful grace incarnate, but it’s Teller who is the film’s real revelation. Invoking a cocky swagger and soulful charm reminiscent of Matthew Broderick and John Cusack’s best teen protagonists, he makes Sutter a delight to watch, even when it becomes clear that his seemingly still waters run quite deep. 4.5 (out of 5) stars – Brad Liberti ‘

‘Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia’ (Running time: 89 min) They just don’t make ‘em like Gore Vidal anymore. A prolific writer, gifted raconteur, and iconoclast of the first order, he spent his entire life rallying against the very establishment that birthed him, forever undeterred by the opinions or enmity of those around him. In fact, whether dealing with fellow novelists Truman Capote and Norman Mailer, heated debate partner, William F. Buckley, former protégé Christopher Hitchens, or every sitting president since Roosevelt, the man wouldn’t hesitate to torch a bridge to the ground if it meant exposing what he believed to be hypocrisy, greed, and, or imperialism. Yet equipped with an immeasurable wit and an unflinching BSdetector, only the list of those whom he considered friends outnumbered his enemies. It is with the help of some of these illustrious allies, including Mikhail Gorbachev, Dick Cavett, Nina Wright, Tim Robbins, Burr Steers, and even Vidal himself, still brimming with ornery charm and pinpoint focus in the years leading up to his 2012 death, that director Nicholas Wrathall profiles the life of this singular intellectual in his brilliant new documentary, ‘Gore Vidal, The United States of Amnesia.’A queerrights activist before anyone even knew what queer was, an early and avid opponent of the corporate and military state, and an allaround debunker of misleading revisionist history, Vidal always knew how to cause a stir. In this powerful film, the provocateur’s amazing story comes alive, from privileged D.C. offspring to young WWII recruit, from celebrated novelist of his generation to Hollywood power player, political candidate to domesticated expat. Gore Vidal, ‘The United States of Amnesia’ is a complex portrait of an American life fully lived and a singular mind unfettered by convention. 4 stars

KILLER BEAUTIES: TOP 8 FILM FEMME FATALES WORDS BY ADRIENNE MCILVAINE A classic figure stretching back to Roman and Greek times (remember the Sirens?), the femme fatale has always harbored mystery and drama underneath her alluring and sexy facade. Her combination of irresistible charm and striking beauty has led many a man to his doom. Here are eight of the deadliest, most calculating and gorgeous femme fatales to grace the big screen. Jessica Rabbit, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” With her vavavoom figure, luxurious hair, and unabashed love for screwloose Roger, the loyal Jessica Rabbit in 1988’s halfanimated, halflive action comedy was a clever sendup of the scheming femme fatale. She's not bad, she's just drawn that way. Faye Dunaway, “Chinatown” One of the hallmarks of the femme fatale is you can never pin them down. Dunaway's mysterious, intriguing turn as the beautiful but damaged Evelyn Mulwray is just as devastating now as it was in 1974. Sharon Stone, “Basic Instinct” Stone's infamous legcrossing scene in Paul Verhoeven's 1992 Oscar nominated drama was the ultimate femme fatale move her icy beauty and bold personality blinded men from her danger. Lana Turner, “The Postman Always Rings Twice” As the gorgeous but unhappy wife of a much older man, Turner was all slippery charm and sly cunning in this 1946 noir. Her feminine wiles may have been enough to seduce a lonely drifter, but they weren’t enough to stave off her inevitable downfall. Kim Basinger, “L.A. Confidential” An adaptation of author James Ellroy’s novel about political corruption and organized crime in ‘50s Los Angeles, the 1997 film became a highpoint of Basinger’s career when she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of a sultry prostitute whose resemblance to Veronica Lake is no accident. Barbara Stanwyck, “Double Indemnity” Made in 1944, “Double Indemnity” is arguably one of the finest filmnoir films ever made, and Stanwyck’s coldly duplicitous, multiplemurdering housewife is one of the best (and worstfemme fatales ever. Kathleen Turner, “Body Heat” Partially inspired by “Double Indemnity”, this steamy 1981 drama served up a coolly confident Kathleen Turner as the sexually charged, murderously motivated Matty Walker. Of course William Hurt couldn't resist her, and neither can we. Natasha Henstridge, “Species” A sleeper scifi hit from 1995, “Species” follows the beautiful but deadly alien Sil as she attempts to seduce men into impregnating her, thereby allowing her alien race to take over Earth. Henstridge may not have a lot of lines but she doesn’t need them; Sil is smart enough to let her body do the talking. BELLO
Get To Know‌ Bonnie McKee
BY HIKO MITSUZUKA
Just in time to celebrate America's 237th birthday last month, singersongwriter Bonnie McKee dropped "American Girl," a sugary sweet single and a piece of pop trifle that is smarter than it sounds. McKee, who's written a crapload of giant hits for Katy Perry (nearly the entire Teenage Dream album), Britney ("Hold It Against Me"), Ke$ha ("C'Mon"), and Adam Lambert ("Cuckoo," "Chokehold"), is finally getting her chance in front of the mic after being responsible for selling over 25 million singles around the world. And you probably still have no idea who she is."American Girl," her debut single as a vocalist, has all the makings of a radio hit: Dr. Luke produced theatrics, a rebellious tone that rivals Ke$ha's glittercovered oeuvre, and an irresistible chorus that simultaneously celebrates and condemns what it means to be a young female in the United States during these kooky 2010s. "I was raised by a television, every day is a competition, put the key into my ignition..." McKee is like a GenY It Girl, even though she has yet to penetrate the zeitgeist. In the song, she's a nearly 30 party girl who wants to be taken seriously while pursuing her dreams of "taking over the world" (there's no specific plan because, well, pop music allows for such vague declarations). It's kind of a hard goal to achieve when she's still getting drunk outside 7Elevens and "moving my body" in order to get ahead in life. On the other hand, the single is simply her comingout party anthem, a jam concocted for both slumber parties and car rides to the clubs. And that's why this earworm works. It covers all the bases while unabashedly embracing its defiant attitude. As for the music video? It's a sly, cameofilled PR stunt in which a slew of celebs lipsync for the camera (Perry, Lambert, Carly Rae Jepsen, KISS, Jenny McCarthy, Joan Rivers, Kathy Griffin, Macklemore to name a few). Heck, it's better than lining them up in front of a Flip cam and having them say, "Hey, we're rich and famous and approve of this chick...mainly because she helped most of us get rich and famous." And in between the Skypedin video footage, we catch a glammed up Bonnie prancing around in Americanflag booty shorts. How patriotic of her. The single (and video) is available as a free download at www.bonniemckeeofficial.com

THE WOLF’S DEN Creative Conversations with Teen Wolf’s beastly twins, Charlie & Max Carver
THE CARVER TWINS, who were collectively seen in the abc longrunning series 'Desperate Housewives' have turned the tables, and embarked on a much different journey, a harrier one. Playing two different supernatural teenagers, which when placed together turn into one single simply terrifying creature? The Carvers tweet a lot and offer the best commentary when it comes to Monday night on the twitterverse during 'Teen Wolf' airings. They also work a lot, and if they aren’t already considered a hott commodity, (yes with a double t), very soon, they will be. We asked them to discuss, in our presence, what it’s like being one in a pair of two, both onscreen and off. What it’s like being the latest additions to MTV’s hit series, working together, animal instincts, and Wolf 101.
CHARLIE CARVER: It’s the first time where I get to work with people my own age. It’s kind of like going to summer camp every day on set. We’re hanging out with people who we really like, and then when we’re shooting, and we’re playing the bad guys, it’s a complete switch. It becomes a lot more fun because all of the sudden you’re acting with people whom you know very well. It’s a complete genre jump for us. Getting to run around in the woods with claws and no clothes, and fangs. It’s fun. MAX CARVER: For me everyone was so welcoming and really wanted our creative input, which made it a pleasure to work on that show. Particularly since they would give us an outline and obviously what to say, but they really wanted us to make these characters our own. It’s been really fun working with my brother because aside from coming up with our own stuff and working on it individually, we give each other input. Working with the cast and crew, it feels like a family from day one. It’s a natural pleasure.

CHARLIE CARVER: Max, do you want to maybe sit somewhere else? MAX CARVER: No, no I’m happy here. I don’t mind the sun. CHARLIE CARVER: Why don’t you sit up a bit? It’s hurting me watching you just slouch. You know, maybe you’re going into a diabetic coma? I don’t know. Something was going on. CHARLIE CARVER: With input, I think the general story was there, but one of the things we had fun developing was how our characters fight, and how we kind of respond to violent situations. It was really Max and Jeff [Davis] that kind of came up with my character, Ethan, really enjoying getting the crap beaten out of him. Which was fun to play with all season. MAX CARVER: Again, everything was outlined in the beginning, but I guess Jeff really went off of what we wanted to do. He had a structure to the season, but after working with us, he was writing as he was going, and of course, everything was planned out. After he saw how we interacted with each other and the other characters, he kind of tailored the writing to what we had already done. There was a scene where we were fighting, me and my brother, and I beat the living crap out of him. And Charlie has this stupid looking grin on his face like he enjoyed it the whole time. From that point on, that kind of stuck with their relationship. Jeff is a great creator because he’ll come up to you while you’re shooting and tell you, and give you a sneaky hint about what’ going to happen in three episodes, and you have no idea how you’re going to get there. You just run with it, and then we give him the whole, "I like doing this, I like doing that". CHARLIE CARVER: I think, too, we were supposed to kind of become more opposed. Like twin versus twin by the end of the first part of the season. It’s interesting. I think Jeff saw in us a level of charm? Without sounding selfabsorbed, where all of the sudden, he didn’t want us to be as bad as he initially planned. I think what he realized in that, is that’s there’s been much more of a journey with our characters which you’ll start to see. We started off kind of nonspeaking, and very brutal, and all of a sudden, we start to head towards teenagers again. MAX CARVER: Right off the bat in the beginning… CHARLIE CARVER: You said right off the bat like three times… MAX CARVER: In the beginning, it was clear we had to get in shape. That was kind of the first bar we had to hit. We had a trainer we were working out six days a week, crazy diet. Really just trying to be in shape for the show. Then when the physicality came in the first couple of weeks, we were fighting and doing our transformation, and it was clear it was not something you could just pull off on set. So I went and saw a guy who does the Alexander Technique, and just worked on movement. More than anything for me, it was s about allowing myself to be an animal and imagine what that’d be like, and change the way I deal with sense, and sensory perception…

CHARLIE CARVER: Right. I got a dog right at the beginning of shooting and watching him a lot really helped. I know it’s not quite a Wolf but seeing how much of his sensory perception had to do with smell and how he would listen, and if he was afraid his ears would go down. It helped out. Part of what helped out too is just seeing how the other guys on set do it. And how you really just have to kind of let go and be unafraid of how you’re looking or seeming. You have to roar, you have to embrace your wolf. I learned the other day that Tyler Hoechlin now, because they have so many sound grabs of him roaring, just imitates it with his face, He’s like a pro at it. So yes, I’ve roared before, and it’s almost nothing more liberating. MAX CARVER: Yeah, they’ll have you roar into camera, and the camera man will just be there, and I’ll have a nasty attitude and just kind of yell at him from like the deepest darkest place I can think of… CHARLIE CARVER: And then they edit it with sound, so it looks better. CHARLIE CARVER: From all that supernatural stuff, I think what Teen Wolf has is an ensemble that can jump seamlessly between comedy and romance and teen drama to supernatural actiony stuff. For me, that’s what’s exciting about watching it. At any moment, you could be laughing one minute and then cowering on your couch the next. 'Teen Wolf' gets horror pretty well. MAX CARVER: I think the other thing about 'Teen Wolf' that separates it from the other supernatural stuff going on, is that our show embraces action a hell of a lot more than anything else on television. And I think aesthetically it’s shot so cinematically. They’re not looking for typical camera placements or typical lighting. It’s not like the werewolf transformation’s a big deal anymore. It happens ten times a show. So it’s really about being a wolf… CHARLIE CARVER: A 'Teen Wolf' of course.
MAX CARVER: I think it was a big surprise for everyone, including us. When we were first told we were going to merge into one werewolfwe had to think about it differently as we become kind of this one beast. Then they told us how the transformation was going to happen: Me slipping my hand into my brother’s back, I was initially a little reserved about the idea, but then I saw how it came out. I think it looks awesome. CHARLIE CARVER: We don’t get the makeup, but we got the fangs, and the claws and the contacts which I was afraid of, because that’s what everybody said is the most uncomfortable. I should be wearing glasses, and I never do. I should be wearing contacts. I went to an eye doctor, and the lady took like 45 minutes and could never get them in and gave up and said you know what, you can do it at home with enough practice. But now I’m such a pro at it. They’re huge like the size of a grape. MAX CARVER: Personally, I’d love to have that makeup done on me. But I’d love even more to see it on the girls. I’d love to see Crystal [Reed] and Holland [Roden] go through that process. They already take forever, and they’re very particular. Super easy to work with. Don’t get me wrong, but I’d love to see them go through that process and freak out about having sideburns. CHARLIE CARVER: I think it’d be so funny to see them with sideburns. CHARLIE CARVER: Until then, by the end of the season something big happens to the both of us, and as Jeff said at comicon love will be what transforms these characters. MAX CARVER: ’m excited for 3b, we have no idea what’s going to happen. The world has changed dramatically. CHARLIE CARVER: Yes! The second part of the season is going to be a completely different show.
CHARLIE CARVER: The actual transformation though is done in a pretty old school way, as far as I know about special effects. We do it, and then we jump out. It’s called plating. So then, there’s a plate shot of nothing in the space and then the guy who we work with, Cale [Schultz] (who’s terrifying) steps in and does the other half of the piece. So there’s really only a little bit of CGI that goes on. The rest is just kind of matching the shots and then using a brush (in post) to blend our bodies in [with] Cale's.

MALE MODEL MAKER DAVID TODD When David Todd resigned as Director of the men’s division at Nous Models to launch his own agency, nearly every model he represented came along with him. It’s why DT Models has one of the strongest men’s board in Los Angeles today, including male model superstars Nick Youngquest and Chad White. “After nearly 20 years of being a modeling agent, I felt it was time to move on and start my own business,” explains Todd, who at 37, is considered one of the youngest and most experienced modeling agents in the business. “I started working as an agent when I was 18, fresh out of high school. I know this business inside and out.” Todd chose to launch his agency in Los Angeles because he was born and raised in the city of angels – plus he says you can’t beat the weather – but he considers it a global agency. “I’ve spent my career traveling all over the world and have close personal relationships with clients and top photographers across the globe.” It’s not every agent that can call up Bruce Weber or Steven Klein and personally pitch a new model to them. It’s part of what makes David Todd’s agency stand out from the rest. But there’s more. Todd understands that times have changed in the modeling industry. The old days of mailing clients comp cards of 500 different models to choose from are over. Today’s clients know exactly what they are looking for when they call an agency. It’s the agency’s job to provide a real-life breathing (and well muscled) body of perfection that makes the client’s vision come to life. “I’m always on the search for the next top model,” Todd says. He’s looking for more just a pretty face. A guy must be able to stand out in a crowd and capture the eye. He needs to be classically handsome, with a killer smile, and at least 6’1’’. “Guys under 6 feet are always asking, ‘well can’t I do print?’ The answer is ‘no’, not for fashion’. You need to be six feet

with a chiseled swimmer’s body to fit perfectly into a tailored suit. “Just because your friends’ cousins’ mother told you that you could model doesn’t mean you can,” he says. On the flipside, just because no one but you believes your look is special enough, doesn’t mean you can’t. “I can see through bad skin or extra weight,” says Todd. “I’ve become pretty keen at spotting a guy with a hidden ‘it’ factor.” Personality and charm are key to a successful career, as are taking care of the skin, working out, eating the right foods and maintaining relationships with agents and clients. “One of the biggest career killers in our industry is a know-it-all model who tries to tell the agent or client how to do their job. That never works and it’s a great way to end a career fast,” warns Todd. The biggest misperception about the modeling is that its easy. “It’s not easy to get in front a camera and shoot a thousand good images for a client,” says Todd. But it has its rewards. Just this year, in his third month of being open, David Todd booked a six-figure fragrance campaign. Every agent and agency in the world submitted models for the project but Todd landed it. He also recently snatched Claudia Mason, a top woman model who has graced the covers of nearly every major fashion magazine in the world. It marks a new direction for David Todd and his agency. “We are very excited to have a new women’s division at DT.” He plans to concentrate on developing a few girls, focusing on each as an individual and eventually making DT Model’s women’s board as equally strong as their men’s. “I love watching my models flourish into superstars. Seeing them in major campaigns and editorials, that’s my favorite part of the job, because that’s when I know all of my hard work has been worth it.”
BELLO
BELLO: Having your own agency is blessing or a curse? DAVID TODD: It’s a blessing to be able to have my own agency and be able to call all the shots; however at the end of the day everyone is relying on you and sometimes it can be somewhat overwhelming. I would never look at owning your own agency as a curse. B: What are the 5 words that you think would best describe you? DT: Confident, Ambitious, Loyal, Independent, and Romantic B: Where does your creativity comes from? DT: My creativity stems from my mom; my mom is an amazing artist and she always instilled creativity in me from the time I was a little boy. I’ve always been immersed in something artistic, whether it be photography, drawing, writing, etc. B: Social media has become a must, what is your take on it? DT: It’s an amazing way to promote our company and to promote the models we represent. It’s made it more accessible for clients to discover new talent for their brand. We are constantly updating our twitter, facebook, and blog with editorials and our covers that our models are featured in daily. It’s a great way to put heat on the model overnight. B: Can you please mention some moment you are really proud of when it comes to your carrier? DT: I’m very proud of myself for building an agency from the ground up and in less than a year making a name for my agency in the Los Angeles market. I’m also proud of my accomplishments in my near 20 years of being an agent; booking campaigns for Versace, Dsquared2, Abercrombie & Fitch, and most recently securing a six figure deal with Paco Rabanne fragrance for Nick Youngquest.
B: What is the new trend in male models? (is industry finally going to embrace different looks , beefy and skinny , masculine and feminine, ..?) DT: I see us going back to what it was in the nineties, which was a classically handsome man like David Gandy. I think we have gone through our phase of the skinny editorial young boy and are moving towards a different direction of bringing back more of a Greek God type with a swimmers build and a chiseled face. B: What is the hard side of your job? DT: The hardest part of my job is saying ‘no’ to people and knowing that their hopes and dreams are crushed. That has always been a tough part of my job. Now that I have my own company it can be hard to maintain a personal life, so I try to schedule time for myself on my calendar and take off to places like Palm Springs. If I didn’t do this I would go mentally insane. ‘Me’ time is necessary in this business; your own sanctuary is a must. B: Your favorite city is? DT: I have to say Los Angeles because I was born and raised here. I had an amazing childhood. BUT I love traveling and I live for San Francisco, Palm Springs, San Diego, and New York (but only at a week’s time). Paris is the most beautiful city in the world. B: Blond or Brunet? DT: Since I have a dark complexion, I prefer blondes. B: What is your dream vacation? DT: My dream vacation is to go to Australia. It’s my dream destination. Throughout the years I’ve always worked with Austrialian models and clients and they’ve always been the most amazing and kindest people. I love the ice blue water and warm climate. I can’t wait to visit this next year! Visit dtmodelmanagement.com

AFTER PLAYING EGYPTIAN VAMP, TIA, IN THE FINAL 'TWILIGHT SAGA' FILM LAST YEAR, Armenia-born beauty Angela Sarafyan will find herself caught between Liam Hemsworth and Harrison Ford in the corporate spy thriller 'Paranoia' (directed by Robert Luketic). And that's not all; our intelligence tells us that she'll also appear opposite John Stamos and Matthew Lillard in an upcoming NBC project. But we'd like to go straight to the source herself, wish her a belated birthday, and see what's going on...

BELLO: Tell us about your role as Alison in the new thriller 'Paranoia'... Angela Sarafyan: Alison works at Wyatt Corp., which is one of the most successful companies in the technological world. There's 5 of us who work at this company, creating the latest advancement in cell phones. We make a presentation that does not turn out so well, and get fired. As revenge, Liam Hemsworth's character uses the company's credit card for a night out at the hottest club in town, only to get into serious trouble. We later learn that the only way to reach success may involve some corruption and conspiracy. Alison helps to possibly get back at who caused all the problems in the first place. B: How would you describe working with director Robert Luketic? AS: Awesome. He really let me play. I'd do whatever I wanted, and if he didn’t like something, he would just tell me. I love it when he trusted me enough to let me play. The first day, we did a scene outside Wyatt Corp.,(the company we work for in the film), and after a take, he said "Golden Globes for everyone. That was great." I started laughing, That was it for me, I fell in love. B: You recently had a birthday (happy belated, btw). How did you celebrate, and what's your cake of choice? (It's our sweet tooth talking...) AS: It was a very relaxing birthday. I went out to Santa Barbara, camped out, went fishing in the middle of the night (you have to be extra quiet, the fish can hear you), drank wine, oh, I didn't have cake, I just realized... B: We happened to catch a pic of you with the dashing John Stamos on the set of 'I Am Victor.' Do tell... AS: He is a very generous and down to earth person. Absolutely charming, that smile. I understood why people love him -- he took the time when we were off set to take pictures with his fans and say hello. It was very nice. B: What are beauty products you can't live without? AS: Argan Oil B: Jouer foundation and blush AS: Naked eye shadows palette B: What's a motto you prefer to live by? AS: Make yourself happy first, and only expect that happiness to come from you. Then you can expect less from others, whether it be family or friends. Because once you are happy, you can share that joy with others. :) BELLO

“Teen Beach Movie’’s Garrett Clayton beams in his
Disney Channel Debut coming of age musical set in the wonderful and colorful 60s. Several minutes early for his covershoot, Garrett Clayton, the spitting image of a Disney heartthrob, surprises everyone in sight, proving that fashionably early is just as good and appropriate as fashionably late. Or maybe that rule only applies when you’re Garrett Clayton. The dirty blonde, soon to be the heart and affection of tweens worldwide, stars as Tanner in the big mouse’s latest installment. The project? A sure to be singalong musical, in the style of the iconic Beach Party films, which Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello made rather famous in the 1960s. “I’ve only seen a couple of the films,” the Michigan native admits. “But after I got the part, I kind of watched a few clips of them just to get the feel, and took a lot of different elements to create my own character.” After watching Garrett’s performance in the film, you can’t help but see the elements he mentions, as he fits right in with the time and overall sense of the movie and its setting. The movie, labeled the next ‘High School Musical’ is in various ways much different than its musical preceder, according to Garrett. “No one’s done this before. The only thing close to it is ‘Pleasantville’.” Garrett, along with the cast and crew, shot in Puerto Rico for two months, marking ‘Teen Beach Movie’ the third DCOM to film on the island. It’s clear that the Puerto Ricans are getting all the good photoops.“It was kind of a slow build,” he says. “I think they realized what they wanted to try and make this after seeing the dailies. Then they saw the quality of everything and things changed.” And for the better—During its premiere, ‘Teen Beach Movie’ attracted 8.4 million viewers, surpassing ‘High School Musical’’s 7.7 million drawing, making it the top made for TV original movie premiere in more than four years.“I think Jeffrey Hornaday, the director, always had a vision of what he wanted. Jeffrey wasn’t going to expect anything less,” Says Garrett. “There was no underestimating. He expected a lot from us, and that’s what he got.” With a rigorous three week prep period before filming, and an even more intense audition process, it’s no wonder Jeffrey ended up with the perfect ensemble cast. “I sang everything from Frankie Valli to Chris Brown, to Bruno Mars during auditions, I mean, it was BELLO

Valli to Chris Brown, to Bruno Mars during auditions, I mean, it was extensive. When I finally got the part, I had two weeks of dance rehearsals alongside recording.” Garrett also dished on Hornaday’s initial vision; wanting it to be, “over the top” with “no limits,”and that’s exactly what happened. A project made in Disney heaven, equipped with musical numbers so extravagant that Garrett’s solo musical scene alone holds 9 different setups.“He would say, if we’re going to do a song, lets do a quartet. If we’re going to do a number, lets do it like they did in the 60s movies, where every 32 bars of music, all of the sudden it’s a different shot.” There’s a project in every actor’s career that changes him or her, the part they so rightfully deserve after years of tireless auditions. It’s pretty clear that ‘Teen Beach Movie’ just might be it for Garrett Clayton, though he’s well aware of his talents and doesn’t plan to be pigeon-holed by any role. “People are always like, are you a lead actor are or [are] you the sidekick,” he says and then bolts into an explanation. “I did a recent lifetime movie where I played a brooding guy. I enjoy characters. I enjoy playing them. I think there is something to attest to people like Ben Stiller or Johnny Depp, that you can be a leading actor, but also be a leading character actor,” says the onscreen beach boy. “I think that’s so much more interesting because I can only be brooding in so many movies. It’s just as hard to get people enthralled in a drama than to get people to laugh at a joke. I want to be well rounded and I always want to keep the door open for things.” BELLO

BELLO: TELL US ABOUT EDDIE SUAREZ IN “DEVIOUS MAIDS.” IS HE SOMEONE YOU’D LIKE TO HANG OUT WITH? EDDIE HASSELL: WITH EVERY CHARACTER I PLAY, THERE ARE DEFINITE SIMILARITIES AND THINGS I HAVE IN COMMON WITH EACH CHARACTER. SO, YES, I SEE A LOT OF MYSELF IN EDDIE SUAREZ, I FOR SURE COULD SEE MYSELF HANGING OUT WITH HIM. WE ARE NOT TOO FAR INTO THE SEASON NOW, SO THERE’S NOT MUCH I CAN SAY WITHOUT GIVING MYSELF AWAY AND THE NETWORK KILLING ME. BUT, EDDIE IS A GOOD A KID WITH A GOOD HEART, AND HE HAS A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS MOTHER JUST LIKE I DO. B: THE “DEVIOUS MAIDS” ENSEMBLE IS RIDICULOUS, IT’S SO GOOD. WHICH OF THE CAST MEMBERS DID YOU BOND WITH THE QUICKEST? EH: DUE TO IT BEING SHOT IN ATLANTA, AND I LIVE IN THE CITY OF LOST ANGELS, THEY FLY ME IN FOR EACH EPISODE, AND SO I REALLY AM NOT THERE LONG ENOUGH TO BOND WITH THE CAST, WHICH IS A BUMMER BECAUSE I’VE MET EVERYONE,AND THEY’RE REALLY AWESOME PEOPLE. I ALREADY KNEW GRANT SHOW, AS I HAD RECENTLY WORKED ON ANOTHER PROJECT WITH HIM. HE’S A COOL DUDE. ANA ORTIZ SPENDS A LOT OF TIME ON SET WITH ME, SO NATURALLY WE HAVE BONDED, AND EDY GANEM AND DREW VAN ACKER ARE ALWAYS FUN TO CHILL WITH. BELLO
B: ONE OF YOUR “DEVIOUS MAIDS” CO STARS IS SUSAN LUCCI. IF YOU WERE NOMINATED FOR AN ACTING AWARD EIGHTEEN TIMES AND LOST LIKE SHE DID IN “ALL MY CHILDREN,” HOW WELL WOULD YOU HANDLE THAT? EH: SUSAN LUCCI IS A VERY TALENTED ACTRESS TO EVEN BE NOMINATED 18 TIMES FOR AN AWARD. SHE HAS A HUGE FANBASE. SHE IS A VERY CLASSY LADY, SWEET AS PIE. BASICALLY SHE’S JUST RAD. HONESTLY, I DON’T KNOW HOW HOW I’D HANDLE [IT] BECAUSE I’VE NEVER BEEN IN THAT SITUATION, BUT IF I WERE, I HOPE IT’D AFFECT MY LIFE/CAREER LIKE IT DID HERS, AND I’D HANDLE IT WITH STYLE AND GRACE. WE ALREADY HAVE A HUGE FOLLOWING FROM “DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES”, AND MARC CHERRY IS AN AMAZING WRITER, AND BESIDES... ALL TV SHOWS AND MOVIES ARE A GAMBLE. I’M STILL WAITING FOR THE LIFE CHANGING ROLE. B: YOU’RE IN GREAT PHYSICAL SHAPE IS THAT THANKS TO YOUR PASSION FOR SKATING, SURFING, AND SNOWBOARDING? EH: HAHAHA! I’M NOT IN THAT GREAT OF PHYSICAL SHAPE, I JUST HAD SURGERY ON MY SHOULDER. HOWEVER, I AM A VERY ACTIVE PERSON, AND WHEN I AM NOT SURFING OR DOING SOME SORT OF EXTREME SPORT, I AM IN THE GYM 6 DAYS A WEEK. B: “JOBS” HAS HAD A LOT OF BUZZ THIS YEAR SINCE ITS PREMIERE THIS YEAR AT SUNDANCE. TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE IN THE FILM... EH: I PLAY CHRIS ESPINOSA. HE IS ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS AND ONE OF THE FIRST TO WORK FOR STEVE JOBS OF APPLE. HE WAS ACTUALLY EMPLOYEE NUMBER 8. EVEN WHEN STEVE JOBS WAS RUNNING IT OUT OF HIS GARAGE, HE WAS BY HIS SIDE. He brought a now iconic character to life - Next, the 39 year old director takes a professional whack at Joseph Finder’s ‘Paranoia’, in his own take of the author’s New York Times bestselling novel about an employee’s undercover assignment gone terribly wrong. “A book’s a book. A movie’s a movie,” says Robert Luketic, whose latest gig involves him directing the likes of Liam Hemsworth, Gary Oldman, and Harrison Ford just to name a few. The Australia Native came to be known back in 2001 with the release of his first studio film ‘Legally Blonde’, starring Reese Witherspoon, as Elle Woods. One look at his timeline of work, and it’s apparent that ‘Legally Blonde’ and its follower ‘Win A Date With Ted Hamilton’ aren’t exactly action packed thrillers to say the least. “I sort of fell into Romantic Comedies,” he admits. “And up until recently, I hadn’t been able to get out of it.” Paranoia’ marks Luketic’s seventh film, making it the seventh of his films that he has yet to watch. “I’ve never seen my films. Once I’m done working on them, they don’t belong to me. They belong to everyone else but me. It’s a state of mind I’ve always had when it comes to my work.” I pull back in disbelief. How is it that one can ever possibly escape watching ‘Legally Blonde’, even when not purposely trying to do so? Somehow he has. “Elle Woods,” he says, looking into the distance, remembering his time on the project. “It was an amazing time. I had a lot of fun with Reese during that film.”With romantic comedies behind him now, Luketic, 39, dug his teeth deep into what’s set to be one of the biggest films of the summer. “Everything with ‘Paranoia’ happened rather quickly,”says the director. “Once everything was set in place, we went straight to casting, and it all came together WORDS BY DIO ANTHONY BELLO

I’m very fond of writers. I understand them tremendously and really enjoy them,” he says. He was telling the truth, it was apparent, from the way he sat in front of me—completely absorbed in our conversation. Answering every question with true sincerity. His love for writers, and that of production was what got him through the entire filming process of ‘Paranoia’, which shot in Philadelphia last summer. However, Robert Luketic is the man for the job when it comes to controlling a potential disastrous situation or production experience. “I keep a very civilized set. And so everything runs smoothly. I’m very ‘no nonsense’ in that way.” Slight bumps in the road didn’t deter Luketic from having a noteworthy experience on a film sure to be a boxoffice hit. “I was very happy to get involved with this film, and one of the reasons I chose to do it was because of all the elements in the film that represent the times we live in now. readers, looking for their own personal perfect portrayal of Adam Cassidy and his world, and Luketic has already began brushing all feedback that’s not positive off his shoulder. “Don’t watch the movie if you can’t handle it,” he says to those looking for a play by play film version of the book. “This is my piece of work. A Sit Down With Gray Malin:
Bringing Life Back to Photography WORDS BY DIO ANTHONY
At 27-years old, Gray Malin has turned heads with his beautiful beachscapes, showing the world, and anyone who’s willing to take a look, a different, rarely seen perspective on the world’s most beautiful beaches. With his color-centric beachscapes, (now appearing as swimsuit prints thanks to his latest collaboration with Orlebar designer swimsuits), his creations can be seen on the very beaches on which they were born.
BELLO
BELLO: What would you call your type of art? GRAY MALIN: Fine art photography as it's meant to hang in the home. Every body of work starts with the end product in mind- one's wall. B: How did it all come about? GM: I discovered photography and the magic of the darkroom when I was in high school. Quickly excelling, it always seemed more like a passion than a profession. After graduating college in Boston and working a year in the entertainment industry as an assistant to the President at Paramount, I couldn't help but notice that everyone I worked with seemed so passionate about his or her job. This passion fueled my courage to leave and pursue my love of photography as a professional. With no real path to follow, I decided to take out a booth at my favorite Sunday market; the Melrose/ Fairfax flea market in West Hollywood-while also taking classes at the Julia Dean Photographic Workshops. For one year, I showed my work in a 10x10 booth and eventually caught the attention of many influential Angelenos. By putting myself out there and learning from my peers, I was able to meet the right contacts to help launch my online business and start creating a successful fine-art photography business. B: Why do you personally find it enjoyable? GM: Aside from the fact that it's obviously a different perspective on beauty. The most enjoyable part of being a photographer is getting to execute your creative dreams. There is nothing more enjoyable than watching these often-crazy visions come to life.
I eventually had to hire a production company to file a number of permits and basically pay my way in. The day of the shoot we went to the private airport which turned [out] being the same place the Sheik of Dubai keeps all of his private planes. I have never seen so many private double decker planes in my life! It was just wild. When we got to the hangar, we found out our helicopter had mechanical issues and that they were going to fly us in a military chopper instead. Looking out on the tarmac this gigantic helicopter was getting revved up. It held nine people, and we flew with two pilots and two military officials, who were both watching me take pictures the entire time to ensure that I didn't take any photographs of the Royal Family's palaces which were mainly along the coast on the beach. The whole experience was wild and it makes those images all the more special to me. B: Are there any future collections coming to your Orlebar Brown collaboration? GM: Not at the moment, but I am working on some other collaborations, so you'll have to stay tuned! B: What's the process like? How do you choose a beach to photograph? GM: After choosing a location, the process involves a lot of Google Earth, gaining a solid understanding of the terrain along the coast. Then the tricky part is usually finding a helicopter with an English-speaking pilot. After getting it lined up, I am able to research the local beaches and find a few specific locations I would like to shoot. Then the rest is left up to travel and weather- the two largest factors behind each beach I have shot!
B: Tell me about some of the locations pictured in your beachscapes? GM: Dubai was an interesting one. After contacting a few helicopter companies, I was notified that I was not allowed to photograph in the city of Dubai without a substantial production permit. After thoroughly explaining that this was just a fine-art project, they demanded a list of locations, which they vetoed one by one. BELLO

JUICE CRAZE Words by John Cullen
Mason jars filled with fresh pressed juices are giving coffee shops a run for their money. Many may be unfamiliar with the idea of drinking spinach, kale, parsley, cucumber, and beets, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. It was only a matter of time until the juice craze would catch on, and now it’s taking the notoriously health conscious city of Los Angeles by storm. With dozens of locations opening up in Santa Monica, CA alone, what was once only available at local mom and pop shops has now branched out into the corporate world. Menus vary from location to location to offer unique creations that stand apart from the competition. What is it about this healthy habit that’s bringing it to light? For some, it may be the raw taste that’s enjoyable. For others, perhaps it’s the convenience of taking a quick gulp rather than eating a pile of veggies. Whatever the reason, these super green machines can contain high amounts of vitamins and antioxidants that nourish the body inside out, as shown in the ever so popular Joe Cross film; Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. This documentary followed subjects with severe medical conditions who braved 60+ day juice fasts in order to turn their health back in the right direction. Under the supervision of their doctors, each person was carefully monitored throughout their journey. Upon completion, the results spoke for themselves. The subjects then continued to supplement daily juices into their newly built prosperity in order to sustain a healthy lifestyle. Viewers of the film stood inspired, resulting in an increase to the trending juice fad.
Many may find juicing as a means of losing weight quite intriguing. Although, it’s crucial to understand that in order to achieve the benefits of a healthy lifestyle with juicing, a combination of fiber, good carbohydrates, healthy fats, and proteins are all needed - a balanced diet works together to increase the level of nutritional absorption; proper exercise paired with a proper diet will yield greater results than just doing one or the other. Ultimately, the most important key to remember is that it’s best to treat juicing as a supplement to one’s daily diet, not to replace it. If juicing is something that attracts you, pay close attention to the bounds within regular consumption. A good habit to follow is drinking the juice as close to the time after being pressed as possible. Because it’s not pasteurized, juice that isn’t consumed right away or in a timely manner may harbor bacteria creating a food-safety hazard. Washing all fruits and vegetables thoroughly of any dirt and pesticides is a good practice; although it’s best to buy organic, if not possible, a vegetable and fruit wash solution will suffice. You want the cleanest form of absorption as possible. Some other key things to remember are to check with your doctor or nutritionist on what recipes work best for your personal health. Because certain prescribed medications or conditions may not call for particular produce, it’s important to be aware of what’s being put into your system. It’s a means of taking care of ourselves the best way possible, and as long as you are doing your part, your body will thank you. Happy Juicing!
