LETTER FROM THE EDITOR April is all about letting yourself free, letting go of fears and stress, embracing your vision and following your heart. We hope this issue inspires you to do just that. We picked Golden Globe winner Elisabeth Moss for our April cover, as she is like a classical painting: strong and inspiring, beautiful and intriguing, mysterious and popular. As Mad Men is slowly coming to an end, and she is growing ever more critically acclaimed for her work in new roles, it is the right time to paint an all new picture about this creative force of an actress. We have also spent a full day playing and laughing with the cast of Workoholics, and we are so happy to share our experience with you. Also, don’t miss our interviews with the royal Adelaide Kane, the fierce Sadie Calvano, new music superstar Andra Day, the stunning Gina Torres, the sexy Josh Henderson, and many more. While our team travels the world to bring you amazing stories, we want to remind you to get out there and live the life, enjoy the art, get inspired, and inspire others. Also please don’t forget to send your suggestions, photos from Coachella (and elsewhere), ideas and questions to us @BELLOmag.
Bisous, Aleksandar Tomovic (Editor in Chief)

INTRO Amazing things have happened in the midst of putting this issue together, one being the well deserved Golden Globe win for Best Actress In A MiniSeries or Motion Picture Made For TV for her role in Top of the Lake that went to our April cover girl, Elisabeth Moss. We couldn’t have been more excited when we watched her take the win and accept her award. Who better than to represent our Art Issue than a Golden Globe recipient who wins an award for representing her Art?
Chief, Aleksandar Tomovic. As an edgier version of herself than her role as Peggy Olson on AMC’s Mad Men, Moss gives her natural, sweet demeanor a run for its money...
And now, for the introduction to all the talent in our ART Issue...
Covering our Entertainment Section is the hilarious and fun cast from Comedy Central’s hit show, Workaholics. One of the most intriguing and fun shoots to date (shot by the amazing duo, JSquared Photography), stylist and friend Alexandra Mandelkorn dresses the boys in the coolest, most vibrant colors and styles, a feature you will not want to miss!

“An Economy of Grace” BY: STEVEN CARVER THE WORLDS OF ART AND FASHION ARE
WAR
WITH
ONE
ANOTHER.
THERE’S A CONSTANT COMPETITION BETWEEN THE TWO. SOME MIGHT SAY THAT IT’S EASY TO DO WHAT THE OTHER DOES. BUT SOME SAY OTHERWISE. WHICH ARE TRUE ARTISTS? WHO IS ACTUALLY TALENTED? IN THEIR OWN WORLDS, THEY BOTH ARE. WHAT MOST DON’T REALIZE IS THIS: SEPARATE, THEIR MESSAGE CAN LACK STRENGTH; UNITED, THEY’RE A POWERFUL MARKETING TOOL. BUT, AT THE END OF THE DAY, THEY’RE ALL A FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT.

Making its world premiere at Toronto’s Reel Arts Film Festival (RAFF) – North America’s only festival showcasing documentaries on visual art and artists – Kehinde Wiley: An Economy of Grace, takes viewers behind the scenes of the process of creating a masterpiece. Directed by Jeff Dupre (producer of Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present), the film follows lauded American painter Kehinde Wiley, renowned for his vibrant reinterpretations of historical portraits featuring African-American men, exploring female subjects for the first time.
Wiley’s previous works had an ability to empower the disenfranchised, while still creating controversy for inserting an element of the impoverished into high society’s echelon (since the rich historically were the only ones who could afford to have self portraits done of themselves). This time, he looked at 18th and 19th-century society portraits for inspiration – knowing they commissioned unique clothing for portraiture – and joined forces with Riccardo Tisci from Parisian fashion house, Givenchy, to create couture gowns for each of his models, scouted from the streets of New York City.
With all of the elements in place, the process of creation is exactly that; a process. Magic happens in scenes set in Wiley’s studios. Assistants spend days painstakingly working on minute details of large canvasses and Wiley realizes the difficulties in creating degrees of textures for his subjects’ various skin tones. And while some models are joyful of being muses for an accomplished artist, others are suspicious of ulterior motives (a controversial point is that his subjects would never be able to afford his works which can reach an access of $250,000 US). A delicate balance is imperative, as people will inevitably argue about power and patronage, race and gender. Questions arise. Are the paintings about power and dominance? Do the works project one set of cultures onto others? Or, is Wiley simply giving these women a “princess moment” where they can appreciate the beauty of art and artists while being a part of the process? There is no right or wrong answer. The works of Wiley are provocative – a sign of a powerful work of art.

“I HAVE TO SAY THAT IF YOU’D GIVEN ME THE CHOICE, I WOULD HAVE HAD A HARD TIME CHOOSING BETWEEN THE AWARD, OR THAT MOMENT. I COULDN’T BELIEVE IT WHEN SHE SAID MY NAME! AND THEN SHE APPLAUDED, AND IT EQUALED THE GOLDEN GLOBE SHOCK FOR ME!”
Moss was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries that night, having turned in some of the best work of her enviable career in Jane Campion’s moody Sundance Channel masterpiece, Top Of The Lake. She’d just won a Golden Globe for the same role less than a month earlier, but considering the likes of her competition, you can’t blame the actress for wanting to keep her expectations in check, nor for equating the joy of winning one of Hollywood’s most coveted awards with that of hearing an Oscar Winner praise you from the podium. Especially when she was already ecstatic just to have landed the part … “It’s one of those things that when I first got sent [the script] – I mean, I had to audition for it – but when I initially got sent it, obviously I was like, Yes, I would love to be a part of this! But then I thought to myself, I’m sure they’re going to give it to some other actress.” Growing up in this business, bouncing between small parts in high-profile films (A Thousand Acres, Girl, Interrupted) and larger gigs on some truly beloved TV series (Picket Fences,

The West Wing), Moss had a pretty realistic view of how Hollywood works. Yet much to her surprise, she booked the once-in-a-lifetime part, and quickly dove headfirst into the abyss.
it’s his statement, so on set, there’s this drive to make it as good as it can possibly be and you just don’t rest until you think it is. And even then, you just never stop.”
“Season five [of Mad Men] had just ended, and three days later, here I am going to a different hemisphere and working with people that I’d never worked with before and doing all this challenging stuff and doing this challenging accent. But I didn’t do anything except work on that project for four or five months, and I believe the isolation really helped me to be able to throw myself in completely, without any distraction.”
It sounds exhausting, and Moss admits that it can be, but the cast and crew wouldn’t have it any other way, especially during the filming of this much-anticipated final season:
Clearly it did… yet considering that information, one can’t help but wonder how the actress delivers the goods each week - or focuses at all - on the set of Mad Men, a show that she’s filmed for seven years, and one on which, naturally, she’s made quite a few close friends. According to Ms. Moss, however, there’s a reason for that, and his name is Matthew Weiner. “We all care so much about [the show], but Matt cares more than any of us! In the end, it’s his baby, it’s his vision, 13
“You really are putting this thing that existed for a long time and that you were a part of for so long, to bed, and this last season, it’s for us, and it’s for our audience that has been with us the entire time. It’s kind of like a painting; you’re putting the last of your strokes on it, and then it’s a complete work of art, and then it’s done.” As for fan-favorite Peggy Olsen, she sees everything coming full circle. “I feel like in seasons four and five she was getting stronger and funnier and more ballsy, and so now it’s kind of about bringing back some of the elements from the beginning of the show when she was a little bit more lost and vulnerable and bringing it all together into one even more complete person.” April 2014 - BELLO

And yes, just like the fans, the five-time Emmy Nominee has thought about what the end will be like. “That last moment that I play [Peggy] and that last take, when they yell “cut” and check the gate: that’s the moment that’s gonna be kind of freaky. But I think when it really comes down to it, when it ends, it’s going to be very much not real to me -- it’s going to feel like, Oh, we’ll be back in six months.” Sadly, she won’t be, but the versatile star will be appearing on the big screen in a pair of buzzy upcoming indies: Alex Ross Perry’s Listen Up, Phillip opposite Jason Schwartzman, and Charlie McDowell’s The One I Love with Mark Duplass. In fact, after more than two decades as a working actor, Elisabeth Moss is busier than ever, and though she remains endearingly humble, the talented star is willing to make at least one concession. “I’ve been around for a while. I’ve had disappointments, I’ve had those moments where you really wanted to get something and you didn’t, or when you thought you could do it, but no one else did, so it’s nice to finally be like Ok, maybe I don’t suck.” And anyone who’s got a problem with that can take it up with Helen Mirren!

THE NATIONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL – Washington, DC
COACHELLA MUSIC AND ART FESTIVAL – Indio, CA
The tradition of an annual cherry blossom festival dates back to the 18th century in Japan. The Japanese hold their cherry blossom festivals sacred; because cherry trees combine extreme beauty with brief life when they blossom, they see cherry trees as a reminder of mortality. Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo gave Washington, D.C. 3,000 cherry trees in 1912 as a gift from Japan to the U.S. Today, this international tree festival is presented every spring in Washington, D.C.
Coachella, also known as Chella Place, is here with an amazing lineup! Not only are Outkast, Muse, Foster the People, and Bastille (just to name a few acts) going to rock this three-day music and arts festival, but Chella Place is expanding the Terrace! This year Chella Place will work with local vendors and LA restaurants to offer festival goers vegan, raw vegan, gluten free, kosher, and Paleo food. And for all the big time foodies, Chella Place is creating a space called “Outstanding in the Field,” where you can enjoy a four-course meal cooked by celebrated chefs and served family style. www.coachella.com

THE CAST OF WORKAHOLICS IS QUITE POSSIBLY THE FUNNIEST TRIO SINCE THE ICONIC THREE STOOGES BLESSED AMERICA WITH THEIR JOKES AND PRANKS. THEY’RE OUT OF THIS WORLD HILARIOUS, OUT THERE, AND TO PUT IT LIGHTLY, UNPREDICTABLE. THEIR ANTICS ARE SLAPSTICK GOLD AND THEIR COMEDIC TIMING IS WORTHY OF AN AWARD. NOW IN ITS 4TH SEASON, EACH WORKAHOLIC IS LEAVING THE CONFINES OF THE WORLD THEY PRESENT TO US WEEKLY ON COMEDY CENTRAL. ANDERS, NOW A FATHER WITH A NEWBORN DAUGHTER, HAS HAD A MAJOR STINT ON THE GROUNDBREAKING COMEDY THE MINDY PROJECT. ADAM IS KEEPING HIS HAND IN COMEDY WITH A DIP IN ABC’S AWARD WINNING SERIES MODERN FAMILY, AND BLAKE CONTINUES TO ENTERTAIN TEENS OF THE WORLD WITH HIS LINE BORED TEENAGER.
These funny guys aren’t just a match made in Hollywood network heaven, though; they came together all on their own. Writer and Producer Kyle Newacheck grew up with Blake in Concord, California; their friendship dates back to the third grade, where Newacheck says he remembers drawing comic books with his now costar. One hang out sesh led to another, and then enter Adam, who in turn met Anders, and just like that our favorite comedy troop was born. I knew sitting down to chat with these guys would be like sitting in during one of the scenes of their hit TV show, and it really was. Read on and live vicariously through me as I chat with Anders, Blake, Adam and Kyle, self-made pioneers in the comedy world. What’s the process for you guys when you all sit down to write an episode? Adam: Uh, meth mostly. Anders: There’s meth to our madness. Adam: That is correct. We sort of just sit in a room all together and just spitball ideas at each other, and just kind of go, I think this would be a cool world, and take that as a jumping off point as to where a story can go from there. We do that for a couple weeks and then we swittle it down to the stories that immediately everyone is in agreement with it being the story that we can work with. Sometimes you’ll have an idea that you’ll really believe in, and the other guys are like, ehhhhhhhh, that sucks. So you go off and really fiddle with it, and then come back with a clear pitch in order to sell the idea to the other guys. Blake: By the end of the script, any idea becomes a story. Adam: Towards the end, when we’re trying to finish up the season, it’s a free-for-all. Blake: For example, basketball. You got it, that’s a story.
23
Kyle: I’ll be there for the stories, and then I go off and produce and try and make it doable by the time that we’re ready to shoot. When I direct I still get a chance to be a part of the writing, on the last level. How much of it is it improvised? Anders: Thirty six percent. That’s a very particular number. Adam: We just improvised that number right now. So, that’s how good we are. How much of your work is autobiographical? Blake: Our names, so that’s a bit. Adam: I think we kind of take, at least our vernacular, like how we speak: it is very much how we actually speak. So the weird words that we say, like “tight butthole” and stuff, we were saying that before the show came out. Well, since the show came out we’ve been saying it a lot more. Kyle: Adam, Blake and I lived in the house for three years before we started making the show. Anders: Yeah, we like to throw in a hint of irony. It’s almost like through a lens, we’re stepping outside of ourselves. Blake: And you know, the friendship is one hundred percent real. Anders: Stillll real. Blake: Almost too real at this point. Adam: I think that’s why the show clicked with people at first. You could tell we were friends, as opposed to trying to force a face of friendship. Anders, you have a child now. How do you think that Anders would react to having a baby? Anders: He’d raise it to be strong. That’s all I can do. Adam: Or throw it in the pool immediately and make it swim. Blake: That’s a guarantee. April 2014 - BELLO

Blake: Right, right. Fatherhood and stuff.
Adam: They were like, “Wow, he’s really giving this a lot.” But then as I’m holding my knee in pain, I’m saying, “We need to rewrite. We’ve gotta rewrite!” As I was icing up my knee, we’re all pitching ideas. And I don’t remember who came up with the new idea.
Anders: It’s the hormones around the house. They girth you up a little bit.
Anders: It was me. Were you going to say it was me?
Blake: I guarantee that if we get enough seasons you’ll see every character have a kid for sure.
Blake: It was actually Fred Durst.
Adam: We’re excited to see Ders’ dick. We’ve seen it in the past. It’s a nice one. But I’ve been told that...well, I mean, it’s kind of common knowledge that dad dicks are gigantic.
Adam: Season thirteen, DeMamp has sextuplets. What do you think it is about the show that hooked people from the start, besides it being great comedy? Adam: I think what I like about the show is that it’s kind of like Arrested Development. Especially when we created the show, it was the peak of the recession. Stuff sort of hit and people were having a hard time fresh out of college finding jobs. So, you have these guys who have college degrees, but then they go to work at this crappy telemarketing spot. I think it’s kind of cool that even when the economy comes back, these guys are so dumb that they just have no ambition. Blake: None. Adam: These guys just like to party and have as much fun as possible. So I think they’ll stay. Right where they are. Anders: They’re not career dogs. Adam, you were walking around with a leg crutch for a while. Was your leg a victim of the shenanigans that you guys take part in? Blake: Yep. Kyle was directing him into the ground, and he wouldn’t give him a break. Adam’s like, “I need a snack,” and Kyle’s like, “Just one more take!” Adam: I’m yelling out, “I have low blood sugar!” We were shooting a basketball episode; I shattered the backboard. The ball bounced, and I jumped up to get it and I think I came back in the scene too quickly. I was lying in the ground for like two minutes, screaming, “No, oh God, oh no.” Everyone thought I was joking. Blake: They thought that was part of the thirty six percent of improv. 27
Adam: We rewrote the episode right then and had to change a huge portion of the episode to make sense for me not being able to shoot for a couple days. I was all pain meds-out. It happened on a Wednesday, and on Friday I’m on pain meds, acting in three scenes. You’ll see: I kept smiling through the scenes. Blake: It was very lucky and unlucky at the same time. We had like two more days of shooting our whole entire season. It was like, “Shittttt. Of course.” Anders: You know what, we changed everything and it actually turned out worse. So that’s cool. Blake: There’s more Karl in the episode now. A lot more Karl. What’s the craziest thing you guys have done this season, without giving too much away? Blake: Besides Adam’s knee exploding on set, we did some pretty cool stuff. We shot at a brewery out in Los Angeles. Adam: We had the whole brewery, all night long. I ended up doing some really cool stunts where I jump from a moving truck onto a moving car. So I do my own stunts. Kyle: I think one of the craziest stories is, without saying much, is we have a penis swap. What’s the grossest thing you guys have done this season? Anders: I mean, it’s us. Blake: Oh! We have a food fight with Norwegian food, like fish gravy and rat shit. Adam: It’s like four minutes of the episode or less, but when you’re shooting, people don’t realize that, like, four minutes of TV is an entire day of shooting. So it was about 8-10 hours where we’re just covered.
Anders: They’re yelling out, “You need more gravy. He needs more gravy under his eyeball.” Adam: Well, initially, Anders had queso up his nostrils. Anders: Adam put rats on his body. That’s gross to me. Adam: I had a lot of rats all over myself, and as the Peta person was taking the rats away, it clinged onto my neck, and I had horrible scrapes on my neck. So I’m going around like, “Is it bad?” Naturally everyone’s like, “Where? I don’t even see anything.” Then I look in the mirror and I’m bleeding. Anders: Two weeks later, a rat started growing out of the scrape. Adam: Oh, and Ders puked on me. Anders: On purpose. Ish. The scene called for it. Blake: Instead of “Let’s Get Weird,” now it’s “Make it Nasty.” Anders, you’ve been prominently featured on The Mindy Project. Can you ever see Mindy as a character on Workaholics? Anders: We had something where she was going to come and just saying something, but she’s busy. Busiest woman on planet Earth. Blake: Besides Hilary Clinton. Anders: No, busier. Adam: Really? Whoa. Blake: Then she might’ve just surpassed her. Anders: I think it was around Election Day that she surpassed her. But sure, we’d have her. She’s fun. She can improv with the best of them, and we do thirty six percent on our show. Blake: It’s either Mindy or Miley. One of those. Maybe they can be twins on an episode? Adam: I can see it. Anders: There you go, Miley Kaling. What’s the biggest April Fools joke either of you have ever done? Blake: This show. Anders: It wasn’t exactly an April Fools joke, but I told a friend of mine that a childhood friend of ours died. I called April 2014 - BELLO

him up and I was like, “Yo, Chris died,” and he was like, “What!,” and I was like, “I’m just kidding, man, what’s up?” He was so fucked. Adam: I worked at the Hollywood improv comedy club. I had maybe worked there a month. I called the manager one time during the day, to talk to him about something. Basically I had him believe that the place had caught on fire, and I’m yelling, “It’s spreading!” and I hang up. Next thing you know, the guy that worked next door comes sprinting over with a fire extinguisher, screaming, “Where’s it at?” They told me never to do that again or they would fire me and that I was lucky it was a comedy club and that they have to take a joke. Kyle: Dude, when I was in second grade, I took some Oreos, took the cream out, put some toothpaste in there, put em’ in a bag and handed them out to everybody. Nobody knew what hit em’. It was cool. Blake: Well, April 1st is my mother’s birthday, so any type of pranking would be ruining my mother’s day. It’s kind of like out of the question—very serious day in my household. Anders: As all birthdays are. Final words on season 4 of Workaholics? Blake: Let’s just say, we’ve made it nasty. Adam: I think if you like Workaholics, you’re going to love this season. Anders: We get back to the yesteryears. We’re back it. That’s another thing we’re saying now, too. Kyle: We’re getting back to our roots. Just guys drinking beers, real stories, real problems, same old fun shows. We’re not trying to change much. Blake: We’re getting as nasty as we want to be. Adam: It’s a fun season; I’m excited for people to see it.

Sure, I’m tempted to bemoan the endless expansion of the superhero dominating summer movie season, but after seeing this action-packed crowd pleaser, I find myself shouting Viva Manifest Destiny! After all, how can one possibly complain about the sight of Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson kicking butt in body-hugging lycra? Or the inclusion of fellow Avengers alum and original Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders? Winter Soldier may not exactly be ‘The Dark Knight’, but it still manages to pull off the same rare and impressive cinematic feat, improving on its predecessor.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has won back-to-back Emmys for her role as sailormouthed VP, Selena Myers, on this hysterical HBO comedy, and anyone who’s seen even five minutes of it knows exactly the reason why. Combining her unquestionable talent for broad physical comedy with creator Armando Iannucci’s sharp, rapid-fire dialogue, the TV titan routinely delivers the small screen’s funniest performance. The cast around her – including fellow Emmy Winner Tony Hale, Anna Clumsky, Matt Walsh, Timothy Simons, Reid Scott, Gary Cole, and Sufe Bradshaw - isn’t too shabby either, but don’t tell them... we wouldn’t want the team thinking they can start slacking. Oh, Lars von Trier, what would the world do without your trademark blend of fearless filmmaking, Scandinavian nihilism, and cranky old uncle candor? For one thing, we would never have experienced mesmerizing celluloid gut punches like ‘Breaking the Waves’ or ‘Dancer in the Dark’, nor truly understood what it means to challenge the world with one’s artistry. Say what you will about the controversial Danish auteur, but the man’s commitment to exploring the human condition in all of its darkness and depravity is virtually unrivaled, and after 2011’s Palm D’Or winning triumph, Melancholia, I can’t wait to see his star-studded, NC-17 rated latest effort.

In his first live action feature - the more popular with each year 1999 film, ‘Office Space’ - Mike Judge famously explored ennui and incompetence at work. Back then, Internet start-up culture was certainly enjoying its first boom, but it was the 90’s era Dilbert cubicle that was most in need of savage skewering. Now, fifteen years and endless “O faces” later, it’s the culture of Apple, Google, and Facebook with their SEO obsessions, faux emphasis on individuality, and Asberger-level commitment to offscreen communication that’s begging for a takedown. Well, Mr. Judge, do your thing!

Few shows in the history of television have enjoyed the same level of critical acclaim, fan devotion, and pop-culture domination as Matthew Weiner’s mid 20th-century-set masterpiece. In fact, from the runways to the Awards Circuit to the office water cooler, it’s hard to find a place where this show’s influence can’t be felt entirely. Over seven seasons, the drama has made stars of its über talented cast, turned the fledgling AMC network into an Emmy Winning primetime powerhouse, and still somehow found the time to reacquaint us all with the joys of liquid lunches, stiff dress codes, and Zou Bisou Bisou. Perhaps that’s why, whether you’ve been a die-hard fan since day one or arrived late to the party - only to lose a week of your life to bingewatching – you know you’re anticipating this final season with baited breath and a box of tissues.

DVDelicious: April Showers Edition BY HIKO MITSUZUKA Sure, spring is the season to unravel those winter layers and step outside into the sunshine. But if you’re looking to stay indoors and partake in some binge-worthy entertainment, then by all means, allow us to direct your attention to these take-home viewing pleasures...
August: Osage County
The Slumber Party Massacre
(April 8) Chances are your own dysfunctional family gatherings pale in comparison when it comes to this star-studded smorgasbord of a drama. Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts - both nominated for Oscars earlier this year - lead the pack and have at it in one of the most memorable movie moments of 2013 (three words: eat the fish). And be sure to check out the making-of doc which sheds some light on the film’s isolated Oklahoman locale.
(available now) If award-worthy performances and Pulitzer Prize-winning scripts ain’t your thing, then switch gears and settle for this gory camp classic, which is finally making its debut on Blu-ray. It’s has all the ingredients of 80s horror cheese: nubile young teens and a power drill-toting mental patient who just escaped from an asylum. What more could you ask for?
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (April 8) Let’s get real. The second installment of Peter Jackson’s second Middle Earth trilogy is all about Benedict Cumberbatch’s devilishly delicious voice performance as the film’s titular dragon. And any DVD is worth purchasing if it comes with bonus footage of the British actor hopping around in a motion-capture body suit. So there.
Reality Bites: 20th Anniversary Edition (April 15) It’s hard to believe it’s been two decades since Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, and a fresh-faced Ben Stiller became the cinematic spokesmodels for GenX. If you’re looking to experience some serious 90s nostalgia (Melrose Place references, Big Mountain’s rendition of “Baby I Love Your Way”), then revisit this Clinton era classic on Blu-ray.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (April 15) Speaking of Ben Stiller, there’s this: last year’s underrated charmer about a daydreamer who goes on the adventure of a lifetime is also a passion project the actordirector had been developing for years . Yes, Kristen Wiig pops up in a few cute scenes, but Walter Mitty is all about the breathtaking scenery and universal life lessons one must never forget. 33

Tarantulas Invade The TO! JAKE GYLLENHAAL TEAMS UP AGAIN WITH HIS PRISONERS DIRECTOR, DENIS VILLENEUVE, TO MAKE HIS MOST OMINOUSLY ATMOSPHERIC, UNABASHEDLY OFF-THE-WALL FILM SINCE DONNIE DARKO. JUST DON’T EXPECT THE SAME LINEAR STORYTELLING THAT VILLENEUVE - HERE WORKING FROM A SCRIPT ADAPTED BY JAVIER GULLÓN FROM A 2002 NOVEL BY JOSÉ SARAMAGO – EMPLOYED IN HIS 2013 TRIUMPH. INSTEAD, PREPARE FOR AN EERIE AND IMPLODING FEVER DREAM, A STYLISHLY PARANOID VISION THAT WILL STAY WITH YOU LONG AFTER YOU’VE LEFT THE THEATER.
Upon viewing the movie, Adam spots a background actor who looks terrifyingly familiar. Soon, he finds himself in a Dostoyevskian power-struggle with this doppelganger, bringing him in contact with the thespian’s young wife (Canadian star Sarah Gadon, channeling Mia Farrow in the best possible way), and kicking off a dreamlike sequence of events that is as gripping as it is puzzling. Villeneuve, a director who proved with Prisoners what his imitable eye could do for the Pennsylvania burbs, does the same here for Toronto. Working with cinematographer Nicolas Bolduc,
ADAM BELL
(Gyllenhaal) is a soulful, if slightly disheveled, history professor at a Toronto university whose life has spiraled into a Groundhog Day of work and silent dissatisfaction. So much so that not even his steamy relationship with the mysterious Mary (Mélanie Laurent - sleek, sexy, and slightly unraveling, like the best of Hitchcock’s blondes) can shake him from this unfulfilling groove. In fact, his creeping ennui nags him almost as much as his meddling mother (Isabella Rossalinifrighteningly opaque in a small role) until a coworker suggests that he rent a locally-made feel good flick to cheer him up. he reimagines Canada’s largest city as a hazy, teeming, almost third world metropolis, one lit with a golden hue that evokes not warmth, but rather the terrifying jaundice indicative of metastasizing disease. Add to that the film’s brilliant and bonechilling score care of Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, and you have the bold vision of an immerging auteur whose fearlessness calls to mind David Lynch. And as for his re-teaming with Gyllenhaal - a leading man who continues to make the confident, interesting choices of a dedicated character actor - let’s just say that it’s proving to be one of the most creatively inspired Hollywood parings since Scorsese and DiCaprio. 34

KANE HAS PULLED THROUGH FIVE HOURS FULL OF CHANGING, TOUCHING-UP, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, POSING, WHILE HER TEAM AND OURS GAZE FROM AFAR, GOOGLY-EYED, NONETHELESS. IT WAS NOW TIME FOR ME TO HAVE MY OWN PIECE OF ADELAIDE’S TIME, A SIT DOWN. AND JUST SECONDS INTO IT, I SAW WHAT PRODUCERS MUST’VE SEEN WHEN MAKING THE CHOICE TO NOT AUDITION ANYONE ELSE FOR THE ROLE OF THE 15-YEAR-OLD SCOTTISH QUEEN-TO-BE. SHE WAS SOFT SPOKEN, WITTY, AND GRACEFUL. THE WAY SHE MOVED WAS, FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD (AND AT THE RISK OF BEING REPETITIVE), VERY QUEENLIKE. SHE ALSO HAD AMAZING POSTURE. PERHAPS SPENDING 15+ HOURS IN A CORSET CAN DO SUCH A THING TO ONE’S STANCE? MUCH LIKE MARY’S WARM DEMEANOR, KANE, TOO, PUT ME AT EASE. YES, THERE WERE A DOZEN MORE PEOPLE IN THE SAME ROOM, BUT HER ATTENTION WAS UNDIVIDED. FOR THE MOMENT BEING, IT WAS JUST SHE AND I. I LIKED THIS GIRL ALREADY. “I’VE GOT A GLASS OF WINE WAITING FOR ME AT HOME, BUT NO PRESSURE,” SHE JOKES. I DIDN’T WANT TO GET IN THE WAY OF THIS LADY’S WINDING DOWN, BUT OUR TIME HAD JUST BEGUN, AND I WASN’T ABOUT TO LET HER SLIP AWAY THAT EASILY.
Fans of the show may be surprised to know that even in the 21st century, a time of instant gratification thanks to the likes of smart phones and social media, there are still individuals with ties to the old world. Kane is the perfect example. “My family does have quite close ties to our Scottish heritage. Some of my cousins are highland dancers, and I think one of my great aunts teaches bagpipes. Our heritage is pretty prevalent in our family, which is nice,” she says. “So, coming into this, I immediately thought, ‘Oh, this sounds awesome.’ It just seemed like a really fun, strong female role. You don’t come across strong young women in television all that often, and I think that we should have more of them. We’re become more enlightened in our character development these days.” The hit series with only nine episodes under its belt has not only made headlines with its choice of music and extravagant wardrobe choices, but more importantly with the relationships it presents. Mary, after all, is a year shy of 16, and she’s presented as a wise and smart young woman. Mary and her friends empower each other rather than put down. It’s refreshing to see such an idea, when modern day television and film is overflowing with mean girls and ding-dongs, choosing to conceal their intelligence and maturity, or having none at all. But even though Mary’s lavish dresses are a topic of conversation throughout the streets of the Internet, Kane is a simple girl at heart. Surely it must be fun to dress up, have your hair done up in a Victorian ‘do and pretend that’s who you are for endless hours, but this modern girl isn’t ready to trade up some of the goods from the new age to waltz around in a ball gown all day just yet. “My cell phone...I couldn’t live without it, definitely. And Jeans! All I wear is jeans. Also Mexican food. I know it sounds goofy. And just books. I can’t live without books.”
39
If you think changing into dresses fit for a homecoming queen everyday is a girl’s dream, think again; Kane’s here to set the record straight. “When you wear a corset and ball gown and heels all day, every day, you get sick of dressing up. I get excited to dress up for modern events, like the People’s Choice Awards, for example. Doing events like that is super fun, because I don’t really dress up to go out anymore. I don’t really even go out anymore because I work so much. And when I do go out, I’m in boots or really comfy platforms and jeans and a t-shirt or a sweater, and that’s it. I do not dress up, because of course I’m in stilettos all week. But it is fun to once in a blue moon dress up for an event. That, to me, is cool.” What she doesn’t think is cool is the standard way of living she would’ve been subjected to had she lived in the times that her hit-series is set in. “Between the casual sexism, chauvi nism, racism and lack of general personal hygiene, I think I’d kill myself,” she says, speaking like a true queen. “I would not be able to tolerate the kind of social injustice and inequality that was so prevalent in that time, and the class system is just wrong. I’m far more democratic in my thinking. I don’t believe that one person should rule a country and have the fate of millions in their hands simply because they were born to. What you have should be earned, and you should choose the right person for the job, and one who can shoulder the responsibility with grace and tact and care. Sometimes you end up with crap rulers, but at least if you elect them, it’s your own damn fault, but at least you had a say in the matter.” Can someone actually make this girl a royal? An ambassador or any title that bestows a role of authority and leadership? Lucky for her, such worries are nonexistent, much like the worries of being an actor in Los Angeles, which she too once had. 2013 was a big year for the 23-year-old, but an especially pleasant one, too. April 2014 - BELLO
“Last year was very much a year of new beginnings – of beginnings and endings for me, I guess - all of which have ultimately turned out to be quite positive. I didn’t expect to be one of the leads on a show for another four or five years; I expected to continue to pay my dues, because you do. You work and struggle for it, and then when it comes you appreciate it, so it was kind of a bit abrupt. They were like, ‘And, you’re going be one of the leads on this new show with Megan Follows and Toby Regbo and Torrance Coombs,’ and I was like, ‘Woah, you sure you want to do that? I don’t know if I’m up for that.’ It was really fantastic. This last year is the first year I’ve been able to live off of acting, and acting alone - the first year I haven’t had a part-time job - and that’s just been incredible.” One can’t help but wonder what would be of The CW’s take on the adolescent antics of Mary while at the French court, had it not been Kane cast as the kind and understanding queen.
Reign films in Toronto, Canada, and with the help of 21st century green screen techniques and advances in technology, it gives us the perfect foundation and platform through which to create the enormous and towering French Court that Mary, her friends, and the royals call home. It may not be France, but it is certainly not “home” to Adelaide either...at least not yet. Having lived in L.A. for most of her adult life, she reveals to us what the meaning of home is to her, and what she considers a home to be, when your day and night job require so much traveling, and not so much staying still.

“‘Home’ is where my friends are. I’ll always call Australia home, because that’s where my family is. My mother and my brother are there, and all my cousins. They’ve all gotten married and they’re all settling down and having families. That’s really my family home. I go there to reset every year, when I go for Christmas. I’d say L.A. has really become my home, but I feel really driftless at the moment. I feel like a real gypsy. I’m hoping in the next couple years I’ll find a home base and really settle in. I’ve moved nine or ten times in the last four years, and I want a place that’s mine. But all my friends are here in L.A., and I guess I feel most at home here. I have my places and my restaurants, and things I like to do, my hikes and my yoga, and all of that.” She ART issue - BELLOmag.com
As intelligent and polite as Kane seems, she admires a few qualities that her royal alter ego possesses. Upon asking what aspects of Mary’s life she’d like to call her own if given the chance, her answers both surprised me and made me laugh.
“I would love her education, because she was really quite educated, and spoke many languages, and played a couple instruments, and rode, and was politically savvy. She was a very intelligent woman; she was very well read, especially for a woman. I didn’t study hard enough in school – I wish I had – so I would love to have had her education.” The frivolous one gives support to the claim that diamonds really are a girl’s best friend...or “friends.” if you’re talking multiple, as in the case with Kane.
“There’s a serious one and there’s a frivolous one, she said.” The fact that she even said “frivolous” only filled me up even more with curiosity as to what she would say next.
“I love her jewelry, man. Royal crown jewels…are you kidding? I mean, apparently that stuff was so heavy, and monarchs used to get migraines and get pinched, and whatever. But I like to
pauses for a second, and looks out into the distance. Pensively, she continues. “I don’t know. ‘Home’ is a very abstract concept for me because I haven’t been still for the last six or seven years. I wouldn’t say I have a proper home yet.”

just look at it. Put it in cabinets and look at it. Have it up on the walls in frames as art pieces...of course I’d always be afraid of getting robbed, though. But yeah, I definitely like the bling, because I don’t wear much myself. “ It really is refreshing to see a soul like Adelaide’s garnering success at such a young age, paving the way for other formidable women in the industry and taking matters into her own hands at ensuring that young girls have other role models to look to aside from the fashionable material girl one can find on any given channel on any given day. Kane herself doesn’t watch much television; so asking her if she watched herself on-screen was out of the question. But when she does tune in to the tube, it’s almost a nod to her fellow natives down under. “I started watching The Originals, because I know a lot of the kids in The Originals, and there are a lot of Australians, like Phoebe Tonkin, and Claire Holt. And Luke Mitchell’s in The Tomorrow People, and I’m just really excited about young Australians doing well this season in television, which is awesome. When we’re successful enough, we can take the work back to Australia.” And there you have it, ladies and gentlemen: Adelaide Kane, looking out for her country, even when she doesn’t have to. It’s safe to say, Mary’s rubbing off on her more than she thinks.

Current Obsession: At the end of a day or work week, I like to unwind with a really good bath bomb, so I’m always looking for new and crazy, yummy bath bombs. Lush is a brand I love. They’re so easy to dress up or down, and wear heels on grass and not be like “why am I wearing this!” They’re super cool. I really like Again. I just think their look is so cool and fresh. I like designers who are edgy and who experiment with new shapes in their clothes. I’m a sucker for Chanel. Every girl can’t help but oohh and aahh over their runway, every single time. Playlist: I’m so excited for Coachella; it’s going to be my first year going. Super excited to see Outkast; it’s so exciting that they’re going to be playing together because they haven’t for such a long time. Funny Bone: This doesn’t qualify as an April fools joke, but I used to go to sleep away camp a lot, and everyone knows that’s like the number one thing to do while you’re at a camp. We used to think it was really funny to take shrink wrap and lift up the top of the toilet seat, and wrap it, really clean and clear, so when people put the toilet seat down and someone would walk in and uh-oh. I used to think that was really funny, but now looking back, it’s kind of nasty.

I love being a part of that, even if it’s as an audience member.

“I hear that all the time, people saying, Oh, this happened so quickly for you! When actually, this is 10 years in the making!” Ms. Day isn’t complaining, she just finds the chatter quite amusing – indicated by her infectiously booming laugh - and remembers a time when she herself would have believed it. “When I was younger, I used to have the same mentality. I used to think, I just need to go be in a specific area and it’ll all just happen! But as I went through the motions [of performing and recording], I began to realize that just like any other industry, you have to put as much into [this business] as you want out of it. Some people want to be a doctor, so they have the process of Med School and properly learning their trade. It’s the same thing with music.” The Warner Brothers Recording Artist would know; she spent four years learning her trade at San Diego’s prestigious School of Creative and Performing Arts, a high school not entirely unlike the one immortalized in
the 1980 film Fame, she admits. “There were ballerinas in leotards dancing in the Quad and music coming out of a lot of the classrooms at all times.” But she’s also careful to note that “it was equally as strong academically as it was artistically.” That’s because Day doesn’t mince words when discussing the value of education and hard work in achieving your dreams. It’s part of the reason why she laughs off talk of overnight success, but more importantly, why she has little in common with artists who use social media solely to promote themselves. “There’s such a thing as over-sharing, and some things really need to remain private. I don’t want to put all that stuff out there just for attention. I’d rather do it if it’s gonna motivate someone. Sure, there’s always those people who feel that they have to pull more out of you, but you can choose to share as much as you want, and if you’re honest with people, and you’re doing it to inspire them, then I think you can’t go wrong.” SHIRT STYLIST’S OWN JEANS D-ID TIE TOPSHOP EARRINGS AND RING NICOLE MENG RING JULIET’S DREAM COAT MARC JACOBS SHOES GASOLINE GLAMOUR

The same philosophy guides every professional step that she takes as well, from the lyrics that she writes to the covers she chooses to perform. In fact, Day credits her own inspiration – in this case, divinely granted – with helping her to compose deeply personal songs like her current favorite to perform, “City Burns.”
for at The World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January, would be another. “That was the most memorable night of this past year for me. I got to watch Mary J. perform, and then I was dancing with her while Idris Elba was deejaying, and I decided that we were best friends now. It was incredible!”
“That song came about because so much started happening in my career. I got interest from different labels and even Ellen DeGeneres, and after getting off the phone with her at one point, I was so excited and it was so overwhelming that I kind of dropped to my knees and just started praying because I got nervous about the idea of moving forward in this crazy world and losing my foundation in God. It’s very special to me for that reason…but also because Stevie plays harmonica on it!”
Of course, there’s also Ziggy Marley, who adds even more Reggae flavor to the first single off of Day’s upcoming album, a jazzy summertime delight called Coolin’ in the Streets. She explains how that came about. “My producer and I were in the studio just listening to the song and loving it, and we were like, Man, it would be so cool if we could actually get a Marley on the song! Fortunately, I have a producer who’s just crazy enough to make that phone call.”
That would be the legendary Stevie Wonder, just one of the musical icons that Ms. Day has become acquainted with during this past whirlwind of a year. Mary J. Blige, whom she opened

genius. He’s worked with everyone from Buddy Miles to Jimi Hendrix, Whitney Houston to Kenny G – he just has this incredible depth of music. Honestly, I’ve grown up working with him; he’s such an inspiration to me.” There it is again, that word: inspiration. It seems to follow Andra Day no matter where she goes, guiding not just her life and music, but also her iconic style. Of her look, she says, “it comes from my upbringing, going to art school and the type of music that I’m into. I love a lot of jazz, I love doo-wop, I love Motown, so I became enveloped in that era, and I love the look of the 50s. I think it’s just so fun and so playful; you can do so much, and then I kind of ghetto it up a little with all the jewelry and chains.” A mix of technique, tradition, and a thoroughly modern swagger. VIDEO OF HIM PROPOSING TO HIS BOYFRIEND VIA A CHOREOGRAPHED PERFORMANCE INSIDE A HOME DEPOT TO A SONG CALLED “SOMEBODY LOVES YOU.” THE SINGER BEHIND THAT CATCHY POP SINGLE? HER NAME, AS WE ALL KNOW BY NOW, IS BETTY WHO. AND THE GUY WHO PRODUCED AND CO-WROTE SAID CATCHY POP SINGLE? THAT WOULD BE PETER THOMAS.
The 22-year-old Rhode Island native is poised to leave an impression on the music industry. Last month, ten weeks after its official release, “Somebody Loves You” topped Billboard’s dance chart, and more and more folks are shuffling their feet to the uplifting anthem during The Slow Dancing Tour, which is currently taking over the U.S. (with Betty as the headliner). “It’s the first real proper tour,” Thomas describes while trying to find time to adjust to his new Los Angeles roots in between tour dates and writing new music. Having spent two semesters at Berklee College of Music in Boston, he decided to gear up for a cross-country drive and move out west after signing a publishing deal. Making the move with his brother and two best friends definitely helped. Also helpful: getting behind the wheel every day. “I love driving,” he admits. “I’m constantly looking for excuses to drive around aimlessly, which is great once you get out of gridlock traffic. I’ll

drive out to Malibu to drive through the canyons and listen to music. I’ll find myself at Zuma Beach way too often.” Next on his L.A. To-Do List is hiking, and I quickly advise him on the risks of Runyon Canyon (parking, paparazzi, and dog poo). Even though one of the city’s most popular hiking trails comes with its price, it’s still a great opportunity to take in the panoramic views. It’s also a chance to plug into the iPod and play “All of You,” Peter’s very own (and very cardio-workout-friendly) single, or “Heartbreak Dream,” the just-released track that appears in Betty Who’s followup EP, also called “Slow Dancing,” and was picked by Entertainment Weekly’s pop culture pundits as their favorite new song of 2014. And when EW puts your work on their radar, you know things are bound to blow up for you. “Betty and I are so proud of that song, and we’re so happy that it’s out in the world,” he says. 60
WHAT IS A “HEARTBREAK DREAM”? “When Betty and I were writing the song, I remember describing this scenario to her where every relationship you have in your life is kind of like a house, and when you start a new relationship, you’re totally caught up in building the house and painting it and filling it up with furniture and experiences. Then, when you end that relationship, you leave that house and it gets boarded up, and it’s easy sometimes to wander back to it with that person and go back inside and poke around, remembering what it felt like to be in that moment, and you kind of simultaneously have to…realize that there was a reason why you moved on from this, there was a reason why you chose to end this, and you need to remember that. It’s a bittersweet feeling, and I think that’s a sentiment that Betty captures in a lot of her music. And we try to wrap it up in really pretty sounds.” ABOUT THE NEW EP: “We have a few new collaborators. It’s an extension of The Movement in terms of the sonic quality. We’ve had these songs percolating for a while. Ghost
Betty and I are so proud of that song, and we’re so happy that it’s out in the world Beach did a song with us called “Loving Start.” HIS INFLUENCES: “I grew up on great pop songwriters like James Taylor and Prince. My whole frame of reference is based around trying to write catchy songs that resonate with people, so at the core of it, that’s what I’m aiming for.” WHEN PETER MET BETTY: “Betty was always the most magnetic, funniest, warmest person in the room [at Berklee]. So we got to know each other and our respective friend groups hung out. And then she was in my apartment one night playing music with another friend of mine. At one point I heard her singing with an acoustic guitar. I poked my head around the corner and had these immediate gut reactions. The first one was: Oh my God, this girl can 61
write, she can sing, she can play. This is amazing. And my second reaction was: You’re one of the loudest, funniest, most energetic people I know. Why are you only writing these quiet songs on an acoustic guitar?” ON “SOMEBODY LOVES YOU” GOING VIRAL: “I can’t tell you how exciting it is to have people excited about a song that I wrote in a basement with my best friend two years ago. It’s so cool to see everything that’s happened.” ON WRITING WITH BETTY: “It’s like having a musical sibling. I also once heard her describe our collaboration as being telepathic too. The reason why I love working with Betty is because it’s me and my closest friend working on something that makes us really excited.” April 2014 - BELLO

IF THERE WERE A COMIC-GEEKFANDOM HALL OF FAME, GINA TORRES WOULD BE A LOCK FOR INDUCTION. JUST BY PLAYING ZOE WASHBURN IN THE REVERED SCI-FI SERIES

WARRIOR PRINCESS, HERCULES: THE LEGEND

... my life has turned out differently, but so much better than I could have possibly imagined thus far, that I’m goooood. 65
As a self-professed fanboy, I already knew some basic history about Torres before I got a chance to talk with her by phone, but I was curious to learn what the real-life demeanor might be for someone who plays Strong and Serious and Confident so often. Feeling fortunate for the opportunity, and armed with a few of out-of-left-field questions, I was happy to discover that Torres has a BIG infectious laugh and an admirable approach to life, and that her confidence isn’t an act (although hers is of the appealingly easy-going and softer-edged variety). Lately, Gina can be seen as the aggressive, law-firm leading Jessica Pearson on USA Network’s Suits, now starting its fourth season, so I started out on-topic, asking about one of the traits Jessica is known for: her beautifully form-fitting wardrobe. Torres immediately credited her character’s knock-out fashion sense to costume designer Jolie Andreatta. “Having had absolutely no experience in the business world, I found that I was incredibly inept at trying to figure out what that [style] would be,” Torres explains, adding that Andreatta has helped build her knowledge in that area. “We’ve broken some rules, we’ve made some new rules. We try to adhere to the...professionalism of the character, but where we’ve broken rules - in terms of the strict sense of what a woman in business, or a lawyer specifically, wears - we use a lot more color. We play with the silhouettes quite a bit so it’s just not a ‘suit.’” Torres goes on to trace her own reallife fashion choices to two sources: her mother’s “great sense of style,” and the fact that she grew up watching classic movies such as All About Eve, Mildred Pierce, and Mame, a reprisal of which she incidentally dreams of returning to Broadway with someday.
“I still watch and I still look to [those movies],” she says. “You know, when a woman’s body was dressed to accentuate the best parts of her and the best part of being a woman, and that’s what I love about Jessica. She dresses for herself. She dresses in an incredibly flattering way and in a very feminine way. She’s not dressing as a man in a man’s world.” I brought up the topic of Gina’s zen-like confidence, and she answers with a most perfect, little phrase. “There’s a peace in the knowing that comes,” she says, and I get a nice, warm glimmer of Gina’s personality as she speaks. It’s not until I ask her what actors might play members of her own family in a movie about her life, that I get my first big reaction from her. “Wow… well that comes out of nowhere!!” she cracks up. “I never even thought of that before. Wow. No one. They all have to play themselves. They would all have to play themselves. Quite a bunch.” I realize that this would mean her movie co-star would be her real-life husband, fellow actor Laurence Fishburne, and since they play husband-and-wife characters on NBC’s Hannibal, I ask if their home life dynamic makes it easier to slip into those roles. “No, I don’t think it’s easier.” Torres explains, “I think the subject matter that we’re handling is quite intense and demanding of us, just as actors. It would be that way if I were doing it with another actor. The blessing is that I get to do it with a tremendous actor in Laurence Fishburne.” She laughs again. “He’s one of the best we have, and so I just feel lucky to get to work with him, ‘cause that only makes me better. But we come at it as pros. We really do. We’re happy to be working. It’s fun to spend time together, but when we’re working, we’re working.” April 2014 - BELLO

I wake up in the morning, and I go, ‘What’s today gonna be like? What’s today going to bring?’ and I just like to live my life that openly to whatever happens, and it’s gonna be good.
I ask about what happens when one of them pops up onscreen during casual television channel-surfing, with two steadily working, married actors in the same home. “We’re on high rotation at any given time,” she chuckles. “On 800 channels, one of us is on there doing something, but we scroll through. We just kinda go, ‘Oh look!’ [or] ‘Oh that’s nice,’ and we just keep moving. We don’t really sit there and watch, unless it’s something that hasn’t been on in a really long time, and then you revisit it because that brings a different perspective to it,”she emphasizes. “And there are times that I’ve got a channel on, and I’ve left the room… and then I’ll hear a voice coming from the other room and [I realize], ‘Oh, that’s me! Oh, I did that! Oh yeah! I did do that show. Ok!!’” The talk about ‘revisiting’ makes me wonder if Firefly is in play, since there are constantly swirling rumors that the show could return again in some form, but Torres is content with the way things stand after the film Serenity and where the characters ended up. “It certainly was clear that Joss [Whedon] was putting it to bed. It was very clear that this was a gift that we got to do this. Let’s not ask for more - although the fans continually ask for more - but just for us, it was like, ‘O.K. Great! We got to do this, and we got to do this in a big way and do it right.’” I toss out a few more quick questions (Director you’d like to work with? “This Steve McQueen guy seems really interesting”; Food guilty-pleasures? “All of them. I’m a Foodie. I love it ALL”; Binge-watched shows? “Downton Abbey, Orange is the New Black, American Horror Story, Homeland, Nurse Jackie. Yeah. I watch them all”; Favorite Holiday? “I have a six-yearold little girl…and I try to keep as much magic in her life for as long as possible before the world intervenes. Christmas just allows for so much of that.”) before
67
I ask something that tells me who Gina Torres really is. “What are some of your ‘bucket-list’ items?” I ask, and it seems to really catch her off guard. She laughs, surprised. “I don’t think about kicking the bucket anytime soon… gosh. I don’t know...” She ponders for a moment. “No, I don’t really think I have a--” She stops herself. “You know, I have to say, ‘Yes, of course.’ There are things that I think, ‘Oh I would love to do that’ or ‘I would love to visit that’ or ‘I would love to-’ and those things are mine and are personal.” Torres continues, “and I really do mean this. My 25-year-old plans -- those plans I had when I was 25 years old -- my life has turned out differently, but so much better than I could have possibly imagined thus far, that I’m goooood.” She draws out the word ‘good,’ and I hear the smile, sincerity, and satisfaction in her voice. Torres finishes her thought. “I’m good to just see what’s going to happen next. I wake up in the morning, and I go, ‘What’s today gonna be like? What’s today going to bring?’ and I just like to live my life that openly to whatever happens, and it’s gonna be good.” I can tell she means it, and it’s somehow reassuring to hear an actor appreciate that kind of stuff in the way that she seems to. Before I let her go, I pose a hypothetical that fanboys everywhere would love to see play out. “Who would win in a fight between [Alias’] Anna Espinosa and [Firefly’s] Zoe Washburn?” I ask, and I’m rewarded with a belly-laugh. She answers while actively thinking about it. “Let’s see. Weapons or no weapons? Mano a mano? Artillery or not? If it’s mano a mano… Zoe’s a soldier, but Anna fights dirty, so I don’t know what to say. I would say Anna. Yeah.” She’s right, of course.

DELICIOUSLY DAPPER:
50 Shades BY MATTHEW BLAYLOCK
Blue made a splash on the spring runways for 2014. Shades of navy, cobalt, ultramarine, indigo, cyan, and teal were striped, spotted, and slicked onto daytime, evening wear, and everything in between. The color often associated with distinction and excellence has been favored culturally for centuries from dignitaries (blue blood) to artists (Picassos blue period), and statistically is the preferred color of around fifty percent of Americans and Europeans. So turn that frown upside down; the only thing blue about you this spring should be your wardrobe. Designer Veronique Nichanian cele brated her 25th year at Hermes with her spring 2014 menswear show. The brand that has become synonymous with luxury chose a more casual direction for the spring season. The subtle confidence Hermes is known for was seen in the likes of boat necked t-shirts, open toed sandals, and suit jackets accompanied by rolled sleeves, appropriate for the tropical spring destination of your choice. A large portion of the collection was washed in head-totoe blue.
of
BLUE
Kris Van Assche’s collection this season walked a variety of cuts and colors with the motif of sport meets suit that he has become known for. One look of note came in the form of a deep blue Bermuda short paired with a navy sweater dotted with black and white circles. The designer, always staying true to his roots of casual meets formal, finds himself a bit more in tune with the pack this season, sportswear being one other major trend. Maison Martin Margiela’s deconstruc ted-then-reconstructed look came in a variety of shades of the color of choice. An indigo pea coat with black buttons covered a navy loose fit sweater modified with the tail of an ultramarine suit jacket. Sleek cerulean jeans sat tucked into a pair of black boots to finish the look.
Humberto Leon and Carol Kim found inspiration for Kenzo this season from the surf and sand in their native Southern California. Sweatshirts were etched with prints of crashing waves, and pants were cut off in a style indicative of surf and skate culture. The collection was not always blue specifically from a color standpoint, but clearly found a huge inspiration from the blue crashing waves of our local Los Angeles beaches. As we transition into spring and move into summer, make sure the blue you’ll be wearing doesn’t carry over into your mood. Blueberries rich in vitamins and phytonutrients have a calming affect known to reduce anxiety and depression. They also have a variety of antioxidants known to help fight stress. High in vitamin C, blueberries help maintain healthy gums to make sure that smile is showing and glowing. Not only that, but this little berry packs a punch boosting brain health so that your brain stays as sharp as your wardrobe in the coming months. Bon Appétit.

6 Things about
Blake Anderson’s
Line‘TEENAGE’
This 29-year-old workaholic is a certified goofball. But goofiness aside - okay, not all goofiness - he’s appealing to a whole new audience with his new line of T-shirts, which now carries hats and sweatshirts. With a brand named much like his personality, Blake Anderson is the ultimate Bored Teenager.
1.How different was it for you to step into this, in comparison to your usual duties on Workaholics? You know, it’s a whole different world. It’s kind of cool to walk yourself into something that you don’t really know much about because it’s always a sinkor-swim situation, but it’s always fun to gain new knowledge. It came kind of naturally; I’ve always been into collecting weird and rare t-shirts. So it felt like a natural fit to make some. 2. Where do the inspirations for your designs come from? A lot of places. It has sort of a 90s vibe. You might see a world destruction theme, so we play off of that a bit, too. And just boredom in general: boredom is the seed of my creativity. So really, my inspiration just comes from being bored. 3. How involved are you in the process? Very involved. It’s really just me and my girlfriend, Rachel. We sit around and just bounce off ideas. I kind of layout a Photoshop version of how I think the shirts should look. Sometimes I’ll draw the art for it, or Rachel will. Then she’ll
go through the whole production aspect of it, of actually finding a way to get it made. I’m there from the beginning to the end of the process. 4. How’d you come up with that title? Well, the company itself is called “Teenage.” But the website, and what we like to call our patrons, is “Bored Teenager.” We started the company in 2013, and that’s, in my mind, the start of the teenage. I don’t know, I feel like everyone’s just bored and trying to find ways to make old ideas new and creative. 5. Besides you, what other celebrity out there do you think would wear the brand well, for what it is? You know, I’d be down for anyone to rock it. Tom Green, Dennis Rodman... go for it. Anyone who’s got a weird side to them: you’re welcome to rock the gear. Weirdos welcome. 6. Lastly, what advice can you give to the bored teenagers of America? Don’t be afraid to be bored. Oftentimes, people see that as a negative thing. But I don’t think I’d have any of the things I have going on if I wasn’t sitting inside bored on a rainy day, not being afraid have some fun and create.

Tell us about how Jouer started.
makeup lesson. She taught me how to apply and wear cream blush (Maybelline) to the apples of my cheeks, Johnson & Johnson’s baby oil across my cheekbones for a little glow, and Vaseline on my lashes and lips.
I found my niche while searching for a makeup palette with a concealer inside... simple, but impossible to find. I wanted to carry a palette with what I wanted: no more, no less. I set about creating a line of colors sold individually where the customer could then build her own individualized palette. The idea of real customization is at the heart of Jouer and it doesn’t exist anywhere else.
Tell us your daily beauty routine and any favorite tips and tricks!
Where did the name come from? Jouer means “to play” in French. I have always believed that makeup should be easy and FUN and I wanted to convey that message in the name. What’s the concept behind the line? The concept is three fold. One: easy, wearable colors, two: quality formulas, three: smart packaging. I wanted to create a line of effortless and portable products that reflected my love of style and beauty. If you had to choose, what’s your favorite product in the line and why? I love all my babies! Well, I’m partial to whatever I’m working on at the time. But, if I had to pick one, it would be Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint. It’s my desert island product. Lightweight with SPF, it leaves skin with a flawless, even finish.
Where do you gather inspiration from when creating new products? I’m inspired by everything from makeup vloggers, such as Lisa Eldridge, to British magazines (Tatler and British ELLE), my children, travels, and my own makeup wants and needs. When I feel like I need something bright for the lips, I go and make it. What are the trends in makeup for Spring and Summer 2014? Spring is all about beautiful skin. I believe in creating multi-tasking products that offer skincare benefits. Our new primers and concealers are all designed to “treat” specific skin concerns. For summer we’re debuting two beautiful stains that apply clear and respond to skin’s pH level to color lips and cheeks the perfect flush of pink. Lightweight with a natural finish, they are a must-have for summer.
No day is ever the same. I typically have less than five minutes to get ready in the morning before dropping my kids at school and going to the office. But even with limited time, I still want to look natural and pretty. I always throw on my Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint, dot some concealer under my eyes, dab on some blush, curl my lashes, add mascara and Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss in Pink Glace (new for spring). Simple, yet polished. I am constantly promoting the message that less is more when it comes to makeup! It’s all about being a natural beauty, so pick your favorite features and go. Lipgloss, blush and mascara can pull a look together instantly. Don’t overthink makeup. Jouer products do more than one trick. Carry less with you - but still achieve a finished look. What does the future hold for Jouer? I work a year in advance, so I’m currently developing our spring 2015 collection. The next year is exciting for Jouer with new categories, packaging and some absolutely gorgeous colors. I’m slightly obsessed with the innovative eyeshadows we’ll be debuting for fall. I can’t reveal all of the details quite yet, but they are simply stunning!
What makeup did you use growing up? Any specific products you couldn’t live without? My gateway makeup was Bonne Bell Lip Smackers in Dr. Pepper, which gave a little rosy sheen to the lips. I felt so grown up. I also wore these clear roller ball glosses in flavors like bubble gum and watermelon. They were sticky and goopy, but I loved them. When I was twelve, my mother (a former model) gave me the quintessential 107

Beauté BY FLORENCE AZRIA
With the sun’s first rays poking through the clouds, spring is definitely on its way. It’s time for some skin showing.
CicaBiafine
YSL beauty Kiss and Blush
Diptyque Infused Facial Water
There’s nothing worse than dry chapped skin. After trying a bunch of body lotions and moisturizers, I am definitely back to my old favorite French product. From the Biafine family, I love the CicaBiafine daily hydrating body lotion. It’s an easyto-apply body cream that doesn’t leave the skin greasy, but rather moisturized and refresh..
What could be better than a lipstick that can be a blush as well? Well, YSL has come up with just that for spring with that amazing Kiss and Blush ultrablendable whipped mousse. I got it yesterday, and I love the texture on the lips; it leaves a beautiful yet sensual matte finish. It’s very easy to apply and pleasant to wear. My favorite color is “fuchsia desinvolte.”
This treatment revitalizes and energizes, reveals skin’s natural radiance, and optimizes the moisturizing potency of all creams. This water is enriched with Damask rose hydrosol and infused with nasturtium (to bring out your complexion’s natural radiance) and a blend of nine traditional plants and flowers. It is also bursting with the vitamins, minerals, and moisturizers that your skin needs while preparing your face for the next skincare steps. I love it. First thing in the morning before my hubby wakes up, I sneak to my bathroom and apply this delicious lotion, then sneak back to bed so that when he wakes up, I smell as fresh as a rose.

OF LIFE. YOU COULD SAY THAT HIS CAREER STARTED VERY EARLY IN LIFE WHEN HE STARTED DANCING AT A YOUNG AGE AND WON THE WORLD’S YOUNGEST BREAK DANCER AT THE AGE OF 2 ½ YEARS OLD. FROM THERE, HIS CAREER SPANNED FROM DANCER TO RECORDING ARTIST AND NOW A MULTITALENTED ACTOR. HENDERSON HAS ALWAYS CONSIDERED HIMSELF TO BE AN ENTERTAINER. IN ADDITION TO THE ENTERTAINMENT ASPECT OF LIFE, HE’S AN AVID SPORTS FANATIC, A PASSION HE DEVELOPED WHILE GROWING UP AND MOVING BACK AND FORTH FROM DALLAS TO TULSA THAT MANIFESTED INTO HIS DREAM OF
BECOMING
A
BASEBALL PLAYER.
PROFESSIONAL
It wasn’t until at the age of 18 was when he randomly hopped in line to audition for a show called Popstars (equivalent to today’s version of American Idol and/ or The Voice) that his life ultimately began to change. “Popstars was a show about the making of a pop group, and there were about 80,000 kids who auditioned in seven different cities. I don’t know how, to this day, I won, but I did and made it to the final five and instantly got a record deal. It was the most surreal thing ever because I was focused on being a baseball player and never thought I’d be in a pop group by any means,” explains Henderson. The opportunity led him into moving to Los Angeles to meet with different agents and producers, which opened the door for him to pursue acting. Within weeks of signing with an agent, he booked a television show, a movie and a national print ad. “I couldn’t understand why everyone didn’t [pursue acting]. It seemed so easy, even though it wasn’t, but then I learned later on it’s not that easy and I was just extremely lucky in the beginning.” When Popstars turned into the record label folding, he had to figure out what he wanted to do with his life, whether it was to go back to playing baseball in college or take a chance and pursue acting again. “So far, the last twelve years of my life [acting] in Los Angeles have been a complete roller coaster full of ups and downs. The ups are amazing and downs can be really down because the industry can feel lonely and cold. It’s really strengthened me a lot and made me mature. I’m very happy with who I am today and I’m secure.” After landing a few guest starring roles and a recurring one on ABC’s Desperate Housewives, he managed to land the juicy lead role as misunderstood bad

boy John Ross Ewing in the TNT reboot of Dallas, where he says that he’s “having so much fun” playing his role and blessed with the opportunity to work with his television father, the original son-of-a-bitch, J.R. Ewing, played by the legendary Larry Hagman. When asked what it was like working with the now-deceased icon, he described his experience as a blessing. “I was intimidated at first when I got the role. I went to YouTube and looked at every J.R. scene and how he interacted with Sue Ellen and how he did his thing when it came to business and manipulating. Even when he was backed in a corner, he loved the challenge, so I just took that trait and who J.R. was and really tried to figure out, what would the spawn of J.R. be like.” Henderson goes even further to say how natural it was working with Hagman and that he pays respect to him every day when he’s on set. “He is why we’re still doing the show. As long as our show is on the air, the spirit of J.R. will always be there.” As far as his sense of style goes, when he is not suited and booted to play his alter ego on camera, you will find him wearing sweat pants, possibly a wife beater, and a sweatshirt as his comfort choice before he has to transform. Occasionally, he’ll wear his wornin vintage brown boots with his jeans and a suit. This Southern gentleman is pretty laid back, easy going and an all-around nice guy who counts his blessings of being able to shoot every day in his home town of Dallas, Texas. He puts everyone else before himself while staying humble and thankful. “I didn’t grow up with money. I came into a business that I knew nothing of and I wasn’t prepared for. At the end of the day, I haven’t changed in the fact that I care about people a lot.” April 2014 - BELLO

When asked about his hobbies and downtime while shooting, you’ll find him hitting the gym, as he has to stay in shape due to his always being halfnaked throughout the season on the show. He enjoys running, playing flag football, and just hanging with his friends watching sports and drinking a beer. The one thing that continues to mold and shape his career is his passion for music. With the support of the producers on the show, he’s been able to pursue the musician side of him once again. He’s recorded about eight songs, two of which will be used on the show this season, which he’s very excited about. “I was in the studio recording a song called “I See You,” which is very much about the storyline in Dallas of me looking in the mirror and seeing the reflection of J.R., loving it and hating it even more at the same time. It’s a song filled with torment; it’s dark and beautiful.” While recording in Nashville, he’s grown as a writer and vocalist and now, being able to incorporate the musical aspect of his life along with his acting career has been nothing short of a blessing for this multi-talented artist. At the end of the day, he’s still into his music, and he proclaims it’s 50% of who he is as an artist.
Dallas will be pushing the envelope this season. Henderson promises that there will be some racy and scandalous stuff happening that will make people talk. There will be several surprises, along with new characters and villains. It’s going to be everything that the fans love about the show, just amped up to the next level. In addition to the show, Henderson has just finished shooting a gritty, actionthriller called Swelter with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Grant Bowler. As for the future of the 32-year-old actor, his future plans include expanding his musical career and, once he finishes shooting Dallas, he will be getting his “producer feet” wet on a project called War of Wings. “What I love about my life is that I never know what I’m going to be doing next, and I enjoy that every day.”

new things and feeling inspired. This is called psychological trauma. Psychological trauma disables our mind from feeling; our mind shuts down as a survival mechanism. Many doctors will prescribe prescription drugs to help ease our brain into processing the trauma that has taken place in our lives. Some people move forward with this process while others shy away from it because the prescription drugs make them feel disconnected from their inner cognizant selves. If you or
EMDR therapy is an eight-phase treatment. Eye movements (or other bilateral stimulation) are used during one part of the session. After the clinician has determined which memory to target first, he asks the client to hold different aspects of that event or thought in mind and to use his eyes to track the therapist’s hand as it moves back and forth across the client’s field of vision. As this happens, for reasons believed by
WHAT IS
“ART”? THERE ARE SO MANY ANSWERS TO THIS QUESTION THAT YOU CAN SAY IT’S AN AMBIGUOUS ONE. BUT TO KEEP IT SIMPLE, LET’S GO WITH WEBSTER’S DICTIONARY TERM. ART IS THE QUALITY, PRODUCTION, EXPRESSION, OR REALM, ACCORDING TO AESTHETIC PRINCIPLES, OF WHAT IS BEAUTIFUL, APPEALING, OR OF MORE THAN ORDINARY SIGNIFICANCE. I THINK IT IS SAFE TO SAY THAT WHEN WE ARE ALL VISUALLY STIMULATED IT CAN BE A MOVING AND VERY INSPIRATIONAL FEELING, WHICH EXPLAINS WHY SOME OF US LOVE TO TRAVEL OR EXPERIENCE NEW THINGS CONSTANTLY. BECAUSE WHEN WE TRAVEL IT OPENS OUR SENSES TO THINGS WE’VE NEVER EVEN IMAGINE EXISTED. WHICH COMES TO MY NEXT QUESTION: WHAT IS “BEAUTIFUL”? AGAIN, THERE ARE SO MANY ANSWERS TO THIS QUESTION, BUT LET’S JUST SUM IT UP: “BEAUTIFUL” IS PLEASING THE SENSES OR MIND AESTHETICALLY.

According to the EMDR website, it can be defined and treated as follows:
EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR training sessions, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes.
in therapy In a world where art and beauty have so many definitions based around heritage and culture, there is one thing I am sure of that is universal: we were all born with a brain, and the mind is a beautiful thing. The way we as people process art and beauty is the same way we learn. We all learn differently, but lucky for us our ancestors discovered it can be defined in the three following ways: visual, auditory, and tactile (kinesthetic). Unfortunately, when traumatic life experiences happen to us it can block our minds from learning
a loved one has ever experienced any sort of psychological trauma, there is a better solution than prescription drugs or not dealing with it at all. The solution to dealing with psychological trauma is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

a Harvard researcher to be connected with the biological mechanisms involved in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, internal associations arise and the clients begin to process the memory and disturbing feelings. In successful EMDR therapy, the meaning of painful events is transformed on an emotional level. For instance, a rape victim shifts from feeling horror and self-disgust to holding the firm belief that “I survived it and I am strong.” Unlike talk therapy, the insights clients
gain in EMDR result not so much from clinician interpretation, but from the client’s own accelerated intellectual and emotional processes. The net effect is that clients conclude EMDR therapy feeling empowered by the very experiences that once debased them. Their wounds have not just closed, they have transformed. As a natural outcome of the EMDR therapeutic process, the clients’ thoughts, feelings and behavior are all robust indicators of emotional health and resolution—
PHASE 1: The first phase is a history-taking session(s). The therapist assesses the client’s readiness and develops a treatment plan. Client and therapist identify possible targets for EMDR processing. These include distressing memories and current situations that cause emotional distress. Other targets may include related incidents in the past. Emphasis is placed on the development of specific skills and behaviors that will be needed by the client in future situations.
Initial EMDR processing may be directed to childhood events rather than to adult onset stressors or the identified critical incident if the client had a problematic childhood. Clients generally gain insight on their situations,;the emotional distress resolves and they start to change their behaviors. The length of treatment depends upon the number of traumas and the age of PTSD onset. Generally, those with single event adult onset trauma can be successfully treated in under five hours. Multiple trauma victims may require a longer treatment time. PHASE 2: During the second phase of treatment, the therapist ensures that the client has several different ways of handling emotional distress. The therapist may teach the client a variety of imagery and stress reduction techniques the client can use during and between sessions. A goal of EMDR is to produce rapid and effective change while the client maintains equilibrium during and between sessions. PHASES 3-6: In phases three to six, a target is identified and processed using EMDR procedures. These involve the client identifying three things:
1. The vivid visual image related to the memory. 2. A negative belief about self. 3. Related emotions and body sensations. In addition, the client identifies a positive belief. The therapist helps the client rate the positive belief as well as the intensity of the negative emotions. After this, the client is instructed to focus on the image, negative thought, and body sensations while simultaneously engaging in EMDR processing using sets of bilateral stimulation. These sets 121
all without speaking in detail or doing homework used in other therapies. EMDR involves attention to three time periods: the past, present, and future. Focus is given to past disturbing memories and related events. Also, it is given to current situations that cause distress, and to developing the skills and attitudes needed for positive future actions. With EMDR therapy, these items are addressed using an eightphase treatment approach.
may include eye movements, taps, or tones. The type and length of these sets is different for each client. At this point, the EMDR client is instructed to just notice whatever spontaneously happens. After each set of stimulation, the clinician instructs the client to let his/her mind go blank and to notice whatever thought, feeling, image, memory, or sensation comes to mind. Depending upon the client’s report, the clinician will choose the next focus of attention. These repeated sets with directed focused attention occur numerous times throughout the session. If the client becomes distressed or has difficulty in progressing, the therapist follows established procedures to help the client get back on track. When the client reports no distress related to the targeted memory, (s)he is asked to think of the preferred positive belief that was identified at the beginning of the session. At this time, the client may adjust the positive belief if necessary, and then focus on it during the next set of distressing events. PHASE 7: In phase seven, closure, the therapist asks the client to keep a log during the week. The log should document any related material that may arise. It serves to remind the client of the self-calming activities that were mastered in phase two. PHASE 8: The next session begins with phase eight. Phase eight consists of examining the progress made thus far. The EMDR treatment processes all related historical events, current incidents that elicit distress, and future events that will require different responses.

Don’t limit yourself with things you have repeatedly told yourself you would never do again because your first experience wasn’t positive. The mind is a beautiful thing. This is the only show worldwide that encompasses every facet of lifestyle and interior design as M&O officially kicks off the world trade show season in the design world. I was able to witness firsthand the latest and greatest design products from the world’s top professionals in every facet of home fashion. Here are my top picks from a very successful and well attended MAISON&OBJET:

One would think one of the best things about living in Los Angeles, CA is the Mediterranean weather, but we beg to differ. Los Angeles is the only place in the world that has five seasons: fall, winter, spring, summer, and award season! In honor of award season, Mouche Gallery (located in the world famous Beverly Hills) honored one of the world’s most collected photographers, Terry O’Neill. For over six decades, he is the only living photographer who has embraced the span of fame, capturing the icons of our age from Winston Churchill to Nelson Mandela, from Frank Sinatra and Elvis to Amy Winehouse, from Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot to Nicole Kidman, as well as every James Bond from Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan. He photographed The Beatles and The Rolling Stones when they were still struggling young bands in 1963, pioneered backstage reportage photography with David Bowie, Elton John, The Who, Eric Clapton and Chuck Berry, and his images have adorned historic rock albums, movie posters and international magazine covers.

“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; none but ourselves can free our minds!” I know you’re feeling somewhat trapped by things that are happening in your life, but it’s up to you to decide when you want to be free. Happiness and peace are a state of mind, no matter the conditions on the outside.
Remember when you were little and the world was a magical place? Well, guess what? It still is. Tap into your inner child and feel the power of the universe around you. Be in awe and wonder. The light shining in your eyes will inspire everyone around you.
Life is full of miracles, and sometimes - most of the time - people get too caught up in their fears and worries to see them. This month, surrender those fears and open yourself up to a miracle coming your way. You are blessed.
It’s so easy for life to become unbalanced, to get overwhelmed by work, and then feel there’s not enough time in the day for anything else. Allow yourself time for play, meditation, and exercise. You’ll find that by doing this, you’ll have more energy and, simply put, you’ll feel happy.
Slow it down a little and listen to your heart. You’ll hear exactly what to do about a situation that has been plaguing your mind. Honor your feelings.

There’s this little story about sand and it goes something like this: when you hold it too tightly it falls through the cracks of your fingers, but when you hold your hand open it stays. You’ve been holding too tightly onto something in your life. It’s time to open up and allow the situation to be free. What’s meant to happen will happen.
Do you know that everything in your life is a manifestation of your thoughts? You create everything. All of it. Recently you’ve made some requests, whether you’re aware of them or not, but know that they’re coming your way. They may not show up exactly as you thought they would, but they’re coming.
Jan. 19 – Feb. 17
You’ve been really stressed out this month. Worry no more, because a healing is taking place right now. The first step is to stop focusing on what is wrong and instead give yourself this mantra: “This is it and it is perfect right now; from nothing, who I am is the possibility of fearlessness.”
