WORDS BY DIO ANTHONY PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEKSANDAR TOMOVIC

ONE LATE MORNING IN MARCH, I WAITED BY MY CELL PHONE FOR A CALL. ANOTHER ASSIGNMENT: I WAS TO INTERVIEW AN ACTRESS...NOTHING MORE, NOTHING LESS. CLOSE TO HALF AN HOUR LATER, I WAS STILL ON THE PHONE WITH SAID ACTRESS. WE HAD MOVED ON FROM THE SOMETIMES OVERDONE AND MUNDANE (YET MANDATORY) CAREER QUESTIONS TO A MUCH MORE CASUAL TONE IN CONVERSATION. NOT HAVING KNOWN MUCH ON MY SUBJECT, I ASSUMED THAT SHE WOULD NATURALLY BE GUARDED. I FOUND OUT SHE WAS FAR FROM SUCH A THING. WITH GROWING ENTHUSIASM, WE HAD GRADUATED TO LITTLE TALKS ABOUT NIGHTLIFE AND LIVING IN NEW YORK VS. L.A. MY MORNING WAS ALREADY OFF TO A GOOD START. THE ACTRESS WAS RACHAEL TAYLOR, A 29-YEAR-YOUNG BLONDE BOMBSHELL SURE TO MAKE ANY HETEROSEXUAL MAN SQUEAL. TRAVEL issue - BELLOmag.com

OVER LOS ANGELES OF HER NEW NBC SERIES, CRISIS.

An Australian native, Rachael Taylor was born in Launceston, Tasmania, a town so quaint it seems as if the lights and madness of the 21st century have yet to reach it. She’s a smalltown girl with a well-traveled mindset, something she knew at a very young age. Having adored the area where she grew up, but so desperately seeking life elsewhere, Taylor’s the kind of woman who wows with her intellect, endears with her humility, and leaves you wide-eyed at her beauty. Covering BELLO’s Travel issue is not something this lady took lightly. A natural muse, she performs for the photographer as if carrying out a scene in the middle of a take: precise and to the point. Have ever the colors and patterns of spring hung so beautifully as they do on every page

What is it about Taylor that has her morphing into such contrasting characters so fluidly? Having played the superintendent of a New York building riddled with supernatural forces in ABC’s 666 Park Avenue, and now playing Agent Susie Dunn on the NBC thriller Crisis, the Headland star simply says it’s all in how she’s feeling in life at the moment. “The character I’m playing now [Agent Susie Dunn] feels right to me at this time in my life. Just as characters grow, so do I. I’ve never played a character quite like her before. I guess you could say I’m into playing strong female characters right now. Years from now, I’ll be in a completely different phase in my life as well as my career, and the characters I feel drawn to will also have changed.”

Being a federal agent and having that happen was something I found very interesting and really wanted to explore. of Taylor’s spread? Playfully posing, she delivered slim to zero bad shots. It simply isn’t possible for her. Like any seasoned actress would, Taylor found her light. Don’t forget her shoulderlength sandy blonde hair, sure to be a trademark in the years to come. 13

To prepare for the role of Agent Susie Dunn, a not-so-normal woman who’s extremely knowledgeable and good at her job, Taylor went straight for the horse’s mouth when it came to research time, deciding to speak with two former FBI agents. “The agents May 2014 - BELLO

I spoke to were very valuable in the process of creating this character,” she says. “I didn’t dwell too much on the technicalities of the job. We spoke more on what it does to you as a person, and your home life. That’s what I thought mattered here. Our careers and dayto-day jobs affect us very much. Being a federal agent and having that happen was something I found very interesting and really wanted to explore.” Her body of work is that of a quiet success. Steadily proving herself with every film or television role, she has been slowly but surely pulling us deeper in love with such raw talent and idealistic beauty. It wasn’t until that morning’s phone call that I had matched my ability to talk hours on end, bouncing from one topic to another. I had found my match in Rachael Taylor. As the cool kids say, though, don’t get it twisted. Taylor’s face may be up on billboards for all of Los Angeles to see, but this Aussie wasn’t cut with cloth from the bougie isle. In fact, she couldn’t be more comfortable kicking back and entertaining for friends under her own roof rather than at some lavish Hollywood hotspot, frequented by both celebrities and those who live off their worst behavior, the paparazzo. “I prefer staying in. I’m the one out of my friends that’s always like, why do we have to go to chateau? I’ll get the drinks and we can just hang at my place. I [would] much rather unwind with a good glass of something and skip going out.” Lucky for us, it’s too late for Australia to want Rachael Taylor back; if they did, the Americans (me being one of them) simply wouldn’t have it. A universe short of such a creature would be quite the crisis.

THE 2014 SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW: 10 Films

We’re Not Missing

BY HIKO MITSUZUKA AND ADRIENNE MCILVAINE

Godzilla (May 16) Admit it: you’ve watched the trailer more times than Snoop Dogg has changed his name. This dark reboot of Japan’s biggest pop culture export boasts a talented cast (Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe) and epic apocalyptic visuals, so we’re expecting it to make us forget all about Roland Emmerich’s 1998 cheesefest.

Snowpiercer (June 27) Released in its native South Korea last year, Snowpiercer is a dystopian epic that’s shaping up to be this summer’s thoughtprovoking sci-fi extravaganza. Cult director Joon-ho Bong wrangled Tilda Swinton, Chris Evans and Jamie Bell to star in this adaptation of a 2004 French graphic novel in which almost all life on Earth is wiped out due to a failed climate experiment and the survivors circle the globe on Snowpiercer, a perpetual motion train with a constantly evolving class system. We’re totally onboard.

Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1)

An under-the-radar Marvel property, this cranked-up superhero story casts Parks and Recreation star Chris Pratt as a rogue American pilot who teams up with a misfit band of aliens, humanoids and one rocketlaunching raccoon to save the universe. Save us a seat?

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (August 22) Nine years after the first adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel exploded (literally) in movie theaters comes A Dame to Kill For, an alternating sequel and prequel to the interconnected stories of Sin City. The sprawling ensemble cast features plenty of familiar faces from the first outing, including Jessica Alba and Rosario Dawson, though Josh Brolin fills in for Clive Owen as the vengeful Dwight. With its monochromatic style and hardboiled dialogue, Dame is the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer’s day.

Million Dollar Arm (May 16)

Edge of Tomorrow (June 6)

Full disclosure: we’ll never pass up a chance to see Jon Hamm on the big screen. This PG Disney flick, based on the real-life story of a sports agent (Hamm) who travels to India in a last-ditch attempt to find salvage his career by finding an ace pitcher, is miles away from the furrowed brow drama of Mad Men. And with a supporting cast that includes scene-stealers Bill Paxton and Alan Arkin, we’re betting Million Dollar Arm turns out to be the sleeper hit of the summer.

This apocalyptic actioner teams up Tom Cruise with an ass-kicking Emily Blunt (did you see how toned she looked in that trailer?), and the whole Groundhog’s Daymeets-Starship Troopers concept has gotten us psyched for latest thriller from director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity).

5 6 7 8 9 10 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (July 11)

The teaser that premiered earlier this year got us amped for this follow-up to 2011’s surprisingly awesome reboot. Picking up several years after the Rise, this next chapter sets the stage for one of the final battles between humans and those ever evolving apes.

The Fault In Our Stars (June 6)

Jupiter Ascending (July 18)

2014 might as well be considered the Year of Shailene Woodley because after successfully launching the Divergent trilogy this spring, she’ll be front and center in another YA adaption, John Green’s bestselling romantic drama about a cancer patient who finds love in the unlikeliest of places.

The Wachowski siblings (Lana and Andy) blew us away witht 2012’s criminally underrated Cloud Atlas, and now they’re attempting to propel us even further into time and space with this sci-fi tale that’s big on visuals and names (Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis). What the hell is it about? We have no clue. But we’re so there.

Maleficent (May 30)

Some say this Disney reimagining of one of its most iconic villains is the role Ang was born to play. We say...we won’t argue with that.

WHAT’S GIVING US LIFE:

Kroll Show and Broad City BY ADRIENNE MCILVAINE

IF YOU ASKED ME TO DESCRIBE COMEDY CENTRAL IN THREE WORDS, I’D SAY “JOHN STEWART” (NAMES COUNT AS ONE); SOUTH PARK (DITTO TV SHOWS); AND DOGMA, BECAUSE FOR A LONG TIME IT SEEMED LIKE THEY AIRED IT AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. BUT THEN THE STONER MILLENNIALS OF WORKAHOLICS SHOWED UP, AND SUDDENLY IT SEEMED LIKE A NEW WAVE OF TALENT WAS TAKING OVER MTV’S COMEDIC COUSIN. KROLL SHOW IS WRITER AND ACTOR NICK KROLL’S DEMENTED, DELIRIOUS BRAND OF SKETCH COMEDY, WHILE BROAD CITY, A WEB-TO-TV SERIES STARRING UCB VETS ABBI JACOBSON AND ILANA GLAZER, FOLLOWS TWO BEST FRIENDS NAVIGATING NEW YORK CITY THROUGH A HAZE OF INSECURITY, BAD DECISIONS AND WEED. BOTH SHOWS EXUDE SUCH CONFIDENCE AND CREATIVITY THAT THEY’VE BECOME MY MUST SEE TV.

While Kroll Show redefines the sketch comedy show (eat your heart out SaturdayNight Live), Broad City takes the female buddy show and blows it right up. Jacobson and Glazer, who NICK KROLL

A native New Yorker who frequently mines his Jewish roots for humor, Kroll, who also stars on FX’s The League, excels in creating outlandish characters who walk the line between riotous and relatable. His characters are incredibly well-conceived and each one is so physically different that they’re less like a comedic conceit and more like performance art. There’s Bobby Bottleservice, a goateed ladies man and rap impresario who means very much no disrespect; Gil Faizon, a weird elderly Jewish guy who eats three dollops of tuna a day; and Rickey Nash, a washed-up hair metal singer

with OCD who runs L.A. Deli in Marina Del Rey. There’s also a lot of Canadian humor. Sound crazy? It is, but Kroll’s rock solid commitment and sneakily sweet humor are what keep the genrebusting operation running.

created the original web series in 2009, found a patron saint in Amy Poehler, who named herself executive producer on their big-screen debut. Every episode finds the two wellintentioned spazzes getting into and out of crazy embarrassing situations that highlight how much they love each other; they have the kind of bone-deep, freaky connected friendship I wish I had. Abbi, who has a pretty nice apartment and a steady job as a janitor at SoulCycle (she’s just waiting for a trainer spot to open up), is practically a soccer mom compared to Ilana, a perpetually stoned force of nature whose belief she can do anything shields her from the fact that she usually can’t. Through blackout hurricanes, awkward threesomes, terrifying trips to the Upper East Side and more, Broad City wears its insanely quotable heart on its sleeve. In a move that shows just why cable is so creatively important, both shows were almost immediately renewed. It’s a relief when the people who have the platform to do basically whatever they want have the talent and creativity to back it up, which is why next season can’t come fast enough. 22

THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ARI GRAYNOR IS THAT SHE’S DIFFERENT FROM THE CHARACTERS SHE PLAYS ON-SCREEN. SURE, THE TALENTED BLONDE IS ANIMATED, PERSONABLE, AND QUITE WITTY, BUT TO HEAR HER DESCRIBE IT, THEY DON’T CALL HER JOB ACTING FOR NOTHING. “IT’S HILARIOUS THAT I KEEP GETTING CAST IN THESE

Considering the fact that Ms. Graynor is, after all, just a regular person like the rest of us, this makes perfect sense. Yet to the millions of fans who’ve fallen in love with the go-for-broke performer in films like Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist and For A Good Time, Call..., the idea that she’s anything less than the deliciously daffy, brazenly selfpossessed funny girl that she so ably channels on-screen might come as a bit of a shock.

COMEDIC PIECES, BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH THAT SPIRIT [EXISTS] INSIDE OF ME, I DON’T FEEL LIKE THAT A LOT OF THE TIME. I ACTUALLY CAN BE SOMEWHAT SERIOUS.”

But the second thing you should know about the actress is that she draws as much strength from these memorable ladies as her audience does. “I’m proud that people see that in me, because they’re all really fun characters and it’s important for me on a personal level to tap into that confident, sassy part of myself...and a delight to be able to do so.” Lucky for us all, the effervescent star will now be channeling that energy on a weekly basis as Meredith Davis, the party-girl-turned-educator around whom CBS’s much-anticipated new sitcom Bad Teacher is built. Yes, that’s Bad Teacher, as in the irreverent 2011 box office hit starring Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake. Yet, while certainly inspired by its cinematic predecessor, this show (from Happy Endings and Community scribe Hilary Winston) proudly marches to the beat of its own zany drum.

“Cameron’s character (in the film) and the one I play (on the show) have different names and different histories. We’re not trying to condense two hours of a movie into a twenty-one-and-ahalf minute [show]. We’re just taking the idea of this outrageous lady going to teach at school and seeing what happens.” Naturally, Graynor knows a thing or two about playing outrageous women, but it’s what lies beneath the surface that the passionate theater-trained actress is most interested in exploring. “What’s really exciting about [Bad Teacher] is that it explores this character who is so unapologetic for who she is, and knows what she wants, and will go after it however she sees fit without ever having even the slightest bit of concern about what someone might think of her. But at the same time, she is also a very caring person who is down to help out the underdog.” There are in fact few actresses Graynor’s age who can infuse a character with the same indelible mix of funny bone and bleeding heart quite like she can. That’s why the Boston-bred beauty has been Hollywood’s go-to girl for these deceptively difficult roles ever since she first broke out as the slightly tipsy Caroline, opposite Michael Cera and fellow primetime player Kat Dennings in 2008’s Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. At the time, Graynor considered herself to be a dramatic actress, not a comedienne, but that didn’t stop her from improvising one of the film’s most unforgettable scenes. “[Director] Pete Selig gave me an incredible amount of freedom to play around with [for the role of Caroline]…Like the whole 27

turkey sandwich bit: that started out as a drunken improv based on something from my college days, when my boyfriend and his friends would always make fun of me for coming home after a night out, laying on the floor, and just wanting a turkey sandwich.”

Ironically, though, at the time that she filmed her part in Guest’s 2006 mockumentary, Graynor hadn’t yet explored her natural gift for mining laughs off-script. “Nick and Nora was the first time I ever improvised on set, so it was this funny thing of just watching

You can never predict anything. However you think something is gonna be, most assuredly it will be anything but what you expect. Hey, when you’re hungry, you’re hungry! And don’t we all have at least one tale of late night (perhaps drunken) antics from back in our co-ed days? Where Graynor stands alone, though, is in laying claim to the cool distinction of having been the only college roommate of one Ms. Meadow Soprano. “That was my first big job. It was a really long time ago, so it’s one of those things that even when I tell people that I was on that show it takes a full prompting of me to say who I played and what season. But then they’re like, ‘Oh my God! I can’t believe that was you!’” She’s talking about HBO’s alreadylegendary drama, The Sopranos. And for the record, Graynor played Caitlin, Meadow’s homesick, boundary-averse roommate at Columbia during the show’s second season in 2001. It was the first of a series of TV guest spots on shows like Law & Order: SVU, Veronica Mars, and CSI: Miami that would keep the actress busy throughout the early to mid-aughts, when she wasn’t nabbing small roles in films like Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River and Christopher Guest’s For Your Consideration.

the genius that is that company, and on the one hand really wanting to be part of it, but on the other hand being so terrified because I had no idea what to do, and no idea how much I should do.” Clearly, things have changed since then, with the actress now occupying quite a singular onscreen niche...think Bette Midler meets Marilyn Monroe. Which brings us back to Bad Teacher, a once-in-a-lifetime but no doubt pressure-cooker of a project. After all, she is the star, and this is ratingsobsessed network television that we’re talking about. She might be somewhat more serious in her personal life, but Ari Graynor still knows when to relax and let it be. “You can never predict anything. However you think something is gonna be, most assuredly it will be anything but what you expect. So I’m excited that we finally get to show [Bad Teacher] to people, but at the same time, I can’t imagine what any of this is gonna be like. I’m just trying not to have any expectations and to take it as it comes, because maybe it will be crazy and maybe it won’t.” May 2014 - BELLO

‘Maleficent’

Do I even need to explain this one? The world’s biggest Movie Star, Angelina Jolie, sinks her teeth into one of the greatest Disney villains of all time. Who doesn’t want to be put under this spell?.

‘Birthday’ by Katy Perry

You can always count on a Katy Perry song to make you feel like you’re 17 again and Summer’s about to start, but this delicious upbeat jam – my favorite on her betterwith-every-listen latest album, ‘Prism’ - finds Perry in glorious 80’s Prince mode wishing she could make it her man’s birthday every day. Well Katy, bring out those big big balloons, we’re ready!

‘24: Live Another Day’

So what if Fox’s heart-stopping millennial drama seemingly ended on a high note 4 years ago?… sometimes too much of a good thing is actually a great thing. Besides, you know you missed Jack Bauer and crew something awful, Well, this time he’s in London, Chloe’s somehow become The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and rest assured, s**t is about to go down! Would you want it any other way?

Not to be confused with the long running Aussie soap that’s given us such greats as Kylie Minogue, Russell Crowe, and Natalie Imbruglia, this feature from director Nicholas Stoller stars Zach Efron along with - my best friend in my head - Seth Rogan, as, you guessed it… neighbors. Apparently the guys’ alternate and age appropriate lifestyles clash furiously when Rogan and his wife (played by Rose Byrne) move in next door to Zach’s frathouse. Sucks for the burgeoning young family, but should be comic gold for audiences… that is if it’s mined right.

‘Neighbors’

So we have to say goodbye for the summer… Sadly it’s that time of year again, folks… season finale time. Personally, I can’t wait to see how The Goldberg gang wraps up their increasingly-endearing first season, but other network faves like ‘The Good Wife’, ‘The Big Bang Theory’, and ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ promise to keep our pulses racing all month long before parting truly does become such sweet sorrow.

LIFESAVER ON TV (USA’S NEW EMT COMEDY SIRENS), BUT HE’S HAD SOME BRUSHES WITH REAL-LIFE RESCUES (TWO WORDS: APARTMENT FIRE). THE JUILLIARD GRAD IS MAKING HIS MARK ON THE DENIS LEARY-PRODUCED SERIES AS HANK, AN OPENLY GAY MEDIC WHO’S STILL HOLDING A TORCH FOR HIS EX. NATURALLY, WE WANTED TO PICK HIS BRAIN ABOUT HIS TRAINING (IN AND OUT OF SCHOOL), GOING FOR GUFFAWS...AND HOW EDDIE MURPHY FIGURED INTO HIS CAREER PATH.

33

What’s the craziest EMT story you’ve come across while prepping to play Hank? We were in Chicago talking to one of our on set EMTs about what happens when you get a violent call and you arrive before the police. We had an upcoming episode that dealt with some violent situations. And Dave told us about this time he and his partner were called to a shooing victim’s house. And they were first on scene. He says you’ve always gotta make sure the environment is safe because you don’t want to become another patient. And as they enter the house there’s a guy on the couch with a gunshot wound in the chest. They spring to action and try to stop the bleeding while they ask the guy questions like “What’s your name?” “What happened?” All of that. The guys says he and his wife got into a fight and she shot him. The EMTs ask “Where is your wife?” The guy says, “Standing behind you.” They turn and behind the door is the wife frozen in shock still holding the gun. They said they all had to change their shorts after that one.

We’re curious: what’s it like to have Denis Leary as a boss? Denis is one of the best bosses I’ve ever had. He’s an actor. So it’s really important to him that we are always taken care of. He gets all the different challenges that can come working on a set and trying to create something. And he also KNOWS comedy. His sense for what is truthful and what is funny is uncanny. And he’s like an instant litmus test. He has a hard time hiding when he likes something, and when he doesn’t, you will know. Watching he and Bob Fisher (equally genius co-creator and showrunner) craft the perfect scene has been heaven. Got any life-saving stories of your own? When I lived in New York City, up in Washington Heights, there was a fire in my apartment building. The alarms were going off and there was a lot of smoke. It was a kitchen fire two floors down that ended up being a pretty small fire. Not a lot of damage. But the elevators were out and I lived on the May 2014 - BELLO

Favorite buddy comedy? Hands down: Coming to America. I loved that movie growing up and just wanted to find a way to make people laugh like that.

Which celebrity would you want to come to your rescue? Probably Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlet Johansson because maybe they could help me get into the next Avengers movie. 34

The

Kid BY DIO ANTHONY

We Can’t Get Enough Of Benjamin Stockham

On The Set The food is definitely great, but my favorite part of the day is probably seeing David [Walton] and Minnie [Driver]. They’re the light of my life, the highlight of my day. It’s pretty freaking cool. I mean, they’re just so nice. You wouldn’t imagine people to be this nice, especially because I’m very immature, but they’re okay with that. They joke a lot. You know, they’re just genuinely nice people, and I am honored to be working with them. They’re not going to read this right? Because they won’t let me hear the end of it. (Laughs)

Early Bird Depending on what the call-time is. If it’s something like 12, I usually get up around 9 or 10. But if it’s something like 6 or 8, I usually get up like 5 or 6. I kinda got used to it. When I’m not in scenes with Minnie or David, I’m in school. My favorite subject would have to be Art. I really enjoy Art, but ONCE IN A WHILE, A KID ARRIVES IN HOLLYWOOD AND SWEEPS EVERYONE IN TOWN OFF THEIR FEET. IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO MEET BENJAMIN STOCKHAM, YOU’LL SEE EXACTLY WHY THAT IS. THE 14-YEAR-OLD MAY CALL THE HOLLYWOOD SETS HIS PLAYGROUND, BUT HE’S VERY FAR FROM LOSING THE DOWN-TO-EARTH, YOUTHFUL CHARM THAT’S GOTTEN HIM WHERE HE IS. ON ANOTHER SUNNY DAY IN LOS ANGELES, I SAT DOWN TO CHAT WITH THE NBC ACTOR IN HIS VERY OWN SET-SIDE TRAILER, AND HE OPENED UP TO ME ABOUT ALL THINGS SET, AND EVEN A PARTICULARLY POPULAR SHOW, FOR WHICH HE HAPPENS TO BE PART OF THE FANDOM.

TRAVEL issue - BELLOmag.com

36

that’s not in my program. So, I guess my favorite subject would either be science or math. I’d probably go for science because math gets frustrating really easily. However, I do prefer onset school [rather] than regular school because all the attention is on me, and if I need to ask something, it’s not like I have to worry about 70,000 other kids looking at me like, “He’s so stupid.”

Off Time When I have free time I like to draw on my iPad. I love drawing. I draw. I do this thing where I just see something completely random...let’s say a chair, or a stool, or a TV. I just turn it into a monster. I’ve never done any classes or anything.

Tube-Friendly I think I’m 70,000 episodes behind, but I really like Teen Wolf. Last thing I remember - and this is just going to show people how behind I am - I remember the lady, who’s the teacher, but also evil, like, touching the tree? That’s the last thing I remember. My favorite character is Stiles. I think he represents the joking side of life.

37

You know what’s funny? I always have to watch it on DVR, even if I am home by the time it airs. Some mystical force just makes me forget that it’s on.

Stomping Grounds The set is pretty cool; we also have a chicken ranch for the backyard scenes. In a good portion of the first episodes, Marcus doesn’t have a room yet, so one wasn’t built. Then there wasn’t any room on the stage to build it. There’s a bedroom set for Marcus now, though, and it’s nothing like my own room.

There’s a bed in it...I think that’s the only thing that’s similar. My room doesn’t really “signify” me exactly; it’s just a room with a bed and a table. Marcus’ room is a room-room. It’s roomy.

Closing Words Marcus and I, we’re pretty different people, but we’re also similar where it matters. Like Marcus, I too really, really love my mom. Don’t Miss About A Boy Tuesdays nights on NBC.

The

Railway Man

Review

BY BRAD LIBERTI

A SWEEPING SAGA OF COURAGE, CAMARADERIE, AND THE POWER OF LOVE, ‘THE RAILWAY MAN’ MIGHT SOUND

LIKE

AN

OVERWROUGHT

MINISERIES FROM THE GLORY DAYS OF THE NETWORKS, BUT DON’T BE FOOLED,

DIRECTOR,

JONATHAN

TEPLITSKY’S WW2 DRAMA IS RIFE WITH REAL EMOTION AND GENUINE GRIT. DESPITE A HEAVY-HANDED START THAT DOES, IN FACT, THREATEN TO VEER OFF INTO MELODRAMA, A TOP TIER CAST AND A WALLOP OF AN ENDING MAKE THIS PLEASANT SURPRISE AS SATISFYING AS IT IS POWERFUL.

After being seated in the same cabin on a train ride through the English countryside, Eric (Colin Firth) and Patty (Nicole Kidman) share quite a charming meet-cute. He’s intelligent and measured with a lifelong love of trains; she’s curious and warm and floored by his intellect. Soon, they’re building a life together. Unfortunately, Eric, a veteran of the second World War, has never fully come to terms with the unmentionable horrors that he witnessed when his battalion was captured after the Battle of Singapore. As prisoners-of-war of the Japanese, these young men (including Eric, played by Jeremy Irvine at this time) were tortured and forced to help carve out railway tracks through the punishingly dense jungles of Southeast Asia. Now, despite decades having passed since the ordeal, the former soldier turned Professor and his regiment captain (played by Stellan Skarsgård as an older man and Sam Reid as a

POW) are still suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder - long before “PTSD” was ever officially diagnosed. Unable to properly integrate back into society, Eric must confront the atrocities he faced – with Patty’s help – if he ever hopes to overcome his paralyzing demons. Of course, the story becomes decidedly more complex, but thanks to Teplitsky’s expert pacing – even as he jumps back and forth between the past and the present – his film never feels convoluted, or worse, overstuffed. Instead, Frank Cottrell Boyce’s and Andy Paterson’s thoughtful script is perfectly mined for its touching insight into memory, forgiveness, and yes, love. So it’s a good thing that all of the actors bring their A-games. Firth, always dependable, gives Eric such a loyal charm and wounded grace that he easily makes you see why a woman like Patty would fall in love with him. And as for Patty, it’s not hard to see why Eric becomes smitten, what with Kidman radiating her full movie star charm, but what is most affecting about the Oscar Winner’s performance is that her warmth and understanding trump even her beauty. Watch out as well for the young Brits, Jeremy Irvine (‘War Horse’) and Sam Reid (‘Anonymous’), whose scenes in the prison camp are unquestionably the film’s most harrowing. Each actor deftly handles the complex material, giving an utterly magnetic, go-forbroke performance that you won’t soon forget. And Kudos to Irvine as well for nailing Firth’s elegantly nasal delivery.

With great performances, a riveting story, and a director who knows how to balance the epicness of it all with a refreshing realness, The Railway Man is a must-see this Spring. 38

WHILE MOST ACTORS DREAM OF LANDING A RECURRING SPOT ON JUST ONE OF TV’S HOTTEST SHOWS, CARRIE PRESTON STARS IN FOUR OF THEM… OK, TO BE FAIR, SHE WAS STARRING IN FOUR OF THEM, UNTIL - SPOILER ALERT – HER CHARACTER, JUDY, WAS OFF-ED BY JAMES PUREFOY’S TERRIFYING JOE CARROLL ON FOX’S

THE FOLLOWING A FEW MONTHS BACK...SO NOW, TECHNICALLY, IT’S ONLY THREE. BUT SERIOUSLY, THE WOMAN IS STILL A SCHEDULING SUPERSTAR.

To have been lifted out of that incredible school of people and singled out for my work was kind of extraordinary and humbling. 43

“I spend as much time figuring out the logistics [of it all] as I do actually working… I’m just one of those multitaskers. I sometimes say it’s my superpower.” No argument there… However, as millions of prime-time viewers know, the actress’s gifts are hardly limited to organization. In fact, despite maintaining what for most people would be a punishing schedule at best, Ms. Preston still manages to imbue each of the extremely different women she plays with a heart and soul that is wholly her own. Like Elsbeth Tascioni on CBS’s ratings juggernaut, The Good Wife… “This is [someone] who lives in her head and approaches the world that way,” she says proudly. “Elsbeth doesn’t try to curtail her thoughts even though she has so many, and that makes it so much fun to play her. I really enjoy the kind of mercurial, scatterbrained way that she works.”

The gracious Emmy-Winner never misses an opportunity to praise the talented casts and crews that she works with. After all, this Julliard–trained thespian, who cut her teeth in NYC theater before conquering the small screen, knows that it takes a village to make a production come alive. But there’s one co-star of hers for whom she’s reserves the highest adulation: “I play the love of my husbands’ life [on CBS’s Person Of Interest]. It’s not that much of stretch, though, because obviously I’m playing someone who is in love with Michael Emerson...which I just so happen to be.” That’s Michael Emerson, the Emmy-Winning star of The Practice and Lost, whose current pulse-racing procedural just happens to be one of the highest rated dramas on television.

And clearly, Preston’s peers enjoy the seamless way in which she expertly disappears inside this quirky lawyer. So much so, in fact, that Preston was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series last September for her work, something she still can’t believe actually happened.

The two have been married for almost 16 years, yet despite working harmoniously together onset, they attempt to maintain a strict no shop-talk at home policy … even when it comes to dropping spoilers. “Sometimes we can’t help it. It’s like, ‘What did you do at work today, honey?’ ‘Well, a vampire exploded on me,’ or ‘I went and had to go chase down a bad guy on top of a building.’ I really don’t like to know what’s going to happen, though, and so I always make him stop talking when he starts to tell me too much.”

“To have been lifted out of that incredible school of people and singled out for my work was kind of extraordinary and humbling. It’s a testament to that show in particular, though, because everyone on it is so wonderful. They should all get trophies!”

It’s a unique problem to have, but no doubt par for the course when you’re one half of an undeniable television power couple, or when you each star in programs that literally define water cooler television… Like HBO’s unabashedly pulpy, genre-busting May 2014 - BELLO

megahit, True Blood, on which Preston has played feisty, colorful, and tragically unlucky in love Merlotte’s waitress, Arlene Fowler Bellefleur, since episode one back in 2008. At that time, the supernatural subject matter was still considered ‘fringe,’ or ‘genre’ at best (the Twilight-induced current vamp craze had not yet erupted), but the actress knew there was something special about the show, even if she wasn’t entirely sure what that was. “When I first read the script, I didn’t know what to think of it. On the page it obviously was excellent because Alan Ball is one of our greatest writers, but I couldn’t figure out tonally what it was going to be. I remember the first time I saw the pilot, though – realizing, We haven’t seen this quite yet! Is it a drama? Is it horror? The answer is that it’s all of those things, and that’s what I think made it sing.” Not just sing, but belt… to the tune of almost 6 million viewers a week at its 45

peak. Yet for all the rabid fanfare, the actress (herself a Southerner, hailing from Macon, Georgia) is most proud of the dynamic, decidedly complex characters that Ball and his team were able to create. “A lot of Southern characters, I feel, often get stereotyped in Hollywood, and we are guilty of that a bit on True Blood for sure, but [the writers] really try to make the characters specific, and so someone like Arlene isn’t simply a generalized racist southerner. Yes, she starts off narrow-mined and definitely designed to serve up humor on the show, but throughout the seasons, the writers have really shaped her and given her real tragic things to deal with.” Like the loss of her most recent husband and soul mate, the sweet but tormented Terry Bellefleur (Todd Lowe). Now, with True Blood heading into its 7th and final season, and the cast and crew only halfway through filming, Preston remains tight-lipped about what the future will bring for Arlene. But for

herself, she sees an emotional end to a very special chapter in her life. “The other day they had us all in to shoot a special for the series finale, so it was the original cast and Alan Ball and Brian Buckner, who’s our current showrunner, in a roundtable situation talking about the whole series and going back and reminiscing. That was a moment that I wasn’t prepared for, and I found myself getting very emotional and I thought, Ok, I do need to start thinking about the fact that this thing I’ve been doing for seven years is going to be gone in a matter of months.” Gone, but certianly not forgotten...and fortunately for Carrie Preston, her copious TV work, a role opposite Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman in the upcoming feature, Life Itself, and a web series (Darwin: The Series) that she directs and produces promise to keep the talented triple threat wielding that multi-tasking superpower of hers for years to come. “Dressed in Zen” BY STEVEN CARVER

WITH THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF THE WORLD TODAY, IT’S A RESPITE TO RELIEVE ONESELF FROM THE MADNESS. ERADICATE THE CALAMITY. THERE’S TOO MUCH STIMULATION, BOTH VISUALLY AND ORALLY. THAT BEING SAID, THE FASHION INDUSTRY HAS ALSO TAKEN NOTE. THEY’RE GOING BACK TO A SIMPLER TIME, AT LEAST STYLE-WISE.

the East and the West into its seasonal collections. Although it might sound simple to look simple, the opposite is quite true. To keep things from being prosaic, texture is important, while layers of sheen play with the light to create interest. For spring 2014, Blanc de Chine’s women’s collection takes a contemporary spin on the traditional qipao (also known as a cheongsam, a body-hugging onepiece dress) and kaftan silhouettes by using overlays of chiffon and sparkling Swarovski crystal accents. The occasional dashes of pastels – champagne, cantaloupe, and apricot – embody the calm and peaceful side of the elaborate paintings of Dunhuang (a hub of cultural exchanges between China and the West) while flying Apsaras (a female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist mythology) are captured in airy, lightweight fabrics and billowing silhouettes.

After the trendy, over-the-top designs of the 1980s, fashion houses quickly embraced minimalism. It was classic, the opposite of ostentation. The paredback look revealed how fit and form was imperative. Power no longer meant shoulder pads. But with softer shapes, a sense of strength was lost. To remedy that, an inner resilience was needed, so designers looked to the east for inspiration; unbeknownst to them, some believed in fashion Zen from the beginning. Established in 1986 as a design workshop and 49

then as a retail group in 1990, Blanc de Chine (“White of China” in French) looks to Chinese culture and philosophy to create depth in its designs. The first luxury brand to translate design principles of subtlety, simplicity and serenity into the world of fashion, Blanc de Chine combines the best from

For men, Blanc de Chine continues to look at Dunhuang as inspiration for its blending of ethnic styles. For day, a soft jacket with a waterfall collar is essential for warmer weather, while evening sees more structure with a wool overcoat and satin trim. Trousers drape rather than cling, as there isn’t a skinny fit to be seen. Every time of day sees an element of lightness in classic tones of white, blue and black. While there may be no need to jump on a plane to travel to experience Asian philosophies, Blanc de Chine wraps it up in fashions that are calm, cool and collected. How Zen of them. May 2014 - BELLO

SOME MIGHT SAY HOLLYWOOD WAS IN DIRE NEED OF A NEW TOMBOY ON THE SCENE...SOMEONE TO KICK ASS LEFT AND RIGHT, ALL THE WHILE BEING SEXY AND NEVER BREAKING A SWEAT. SUCH WORRIES CAN NOW BE DISCARDED WITH THE ARRIVAL OF CANADIAN BEAUTY MARIE AVGEROPOULOS. HER NAME MIGHT BE HARD TO PRONOUNCE, BUT HER FACE IS THE KIND THAT IS HARD TO FORGET. SHE MAY CLEAN UP NICE, BUT DON’T LET THE PULLED BACK HAIR, ROSY CHEEKS AND PERFECTLY GLOSSED LIPS FOOL YOU. WITH A NEW SERIES UNDER HER BELT AND THE ACTION-PACKED TRACERS HITTING THEATERS LATER THIS YEAR, MARIE AVGEROPOULOS IS ONE TO WATCH.

On her new action-packed film Tracers, in which she met now-boyfriend Taylor Lautner. I had never been to New York before this. It was really exciting for me to learn how to train and do parkour. that and really put those skills to work in a high-end action-packed film. She’s a living, breathing action figure. I’m an adrenaline junkie, personally. I’ve always been a tomboy growing up in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I’ve always been into dirt biking, I ride a motorcycle, I

like to horseback ride, snowboard, and wakeboard...so anytime I get the blood moving through my veins and I’m able to apply that to a role, it’s a blessing for me. No, really. She drives a Harley. I’m always asked where I got my love of 90

motorcycles. I’ve always sort of been the black sheep of my family...so it definitely didn’t come from any of them. I started riding a dirt bike as a teenager, because I grew up on a dirt road on the shore on Lake Superior. When I moved to the big city, I said, hey, why don’t I put turning signals and a license plate on it?, and off I go. Current Obsession. I just got a horse for the first time in my life. I’ve been spending a lot of time with that recently. I think every little girl dreams about having a horse, and now I have mine. I was able to make that dream a reality.

Must Haves. It’s so hard to talk about myself sometimes (laughs). But, I’m obsessed with tea. Any kind of tea I can get my hands on. I have about twenty types of tea in my kitchen right now and I drink it every chance I get. My ritual is to take a cup of tea and then shower before bed. Stunt Queen. I have been doing my own stunts, any chance possible. In Tracers, I had a wonderful stunt double from Paris and she did a great job. But I had the opportunity to learn parkour prior to shooting the movie, so anytime I got to use those skills on the New York City streets, I did. For the movie, we trained in a specific parkour gym in Los Angeles and in New York, I had no idea that places like that even existed, but they do. Her new CW show The 100. Filming The 100 was a very especially unique experience for me. I’ve always been and outdoorsy type of girl, so being able to shoot a story about survival and post humanity survivors coming down to see if it was inhabitable in British Colombia was just a really wild experience, surviving the Canadian winter out there with the group.

What was it as you were growing up or as an adult that you were inspired to become a makeup artist? How did you get started? Growing up, I had no idea that my job even existed. I’ve always been attracted to makeup, as I suppose most little girls are, but at a very young age I quickly realized I liked to put it on everyone else more than on myself. Every sleepover would turn into makeovers. When I first moved to Los Angeles I met a makeup artist who took me on one of her commercial jobs as an assistant. I was flabbergasted; I couldn’t believe that the thing I loved doing the most was an actual job. THAT’s what I wanted to do! I love the amazing, talented people I get to work, travel and have fun with. After a while they become your second family, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have become friends with a lot of them. I love that it changes all

Being a busy working mom, when you do finally have time for yourself, how do you like to spend it? I rarely have time for myself, but when I do, I like to go on hikes [or] take a yoga class...but above all, get a good massage!

the time. It’s never a routine; I never get bored. I love the creative freedom it gives me. If I don’t like the person I’m working with, I don’t have to ever see them again. Who are some people who have inspired you throughout your career? My friends, my family and, I have to say, some of the amazing women I am blessed to work with. Strong, independent, successful woman that somehow balance having amazing careers and being amazing moms. Women that stay grounded no matter how successful they’ve become and spend their spare time trying to make the world a better place. Where do you draw your inspiration from and what is your philosophy behind the looks you create? I draw my inspiration from everything around me. Nature, flowers, fashion, art...but I do have a soft spot for photography books. My philosophy behind the look I create, when it comes to celebrities, always comes from the person I’m working with. It’s always about making them looking the best they can. It’s not necessarily about making a statement about makeup, but rather enhancing someone’s features, bringing out the best ones. I tend to always go from a youthful approach. How does your personal style tie in with your aesthetic as a makeup artist? My personal style is very simple in a lot of ways. Modern and chic.

What would be your advice to a makeup artist starting out in the business? Keep on doing what you’re doing, perfect your craft, develop your own style and stay focused but grounded at the same time. And don’t forget to have a life outside work. the red carpet, award show, and then parties after? I always use a primer before applying foundation, my favorite one being NARS Pro-Prime. What are five products you can’t live without? -L’oreal Voluminous Mascara (the original) -Bioderma Crealine H2O -Tatcha Paper blot -Effacernes Waterproof Concealer by Lancome -Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler. What mistakes do you see women make most often when it comes to their makeup? It’s a toss up between over plucked eyebrows and wrong shades of foundation.

Whose makeup haven’t you done that you would love to do? I’m sure there are a lot, but on top of my head, the first face that pops in my mind is Natalie Portman. You have such a full plate and have accomplished so much already! What’s next on the goals and dreams list? I would really like to collaborate with a cosmetic brand, being involved in developing products, colors, etcetera. What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women? Take care of your skin. The better your skin is, the better the makeup application will be. And, of course, wear sunscreen.

What has been one of your proudest moments in the business so far? I’ll have to say my September Vogue cover with Sandra Bullock, shot by Peter Lindbergh. With fashion week and the award season finally over, what are three of the top beauty trends we should expect to see sticking around for awhile? Probably bright, bold lips: red, pink fuchsia, orange... What do you do to ensure that makeup stays put for a long day on 107

THE YEAR 2014 MAY NOT HAVE REACHED ITS HALFWAY MARK YET, BUT THE VERDICT IS IN: IT’S A GOOD ONE. SUCH IS THE CASE FOR 19-YEAROLD NAT WOLFF. THIS NEW YORK TEENAGER COULD VERY WELL SIGN THE YEAR OFF AS HIS, CONSIDERING THE NUMBER OF FEATURES HE HAS SET TO HIT BIG SCREENS IN THE COMING MONTHS. FOR STARTERS?

BEHAVING BADLY, IN WHICH HE STARS ALONGSIDE POP STAR AND ACTRESS SELENA GOMEZ, IS A FILM ABOUT THE FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN A YOUNG BOY AND GIRL BEHAVING...WELL, BADLY. HE ALSO LIGHTENS UP THE SCREEN AS ISAAC NEWTON IN THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SCREEN ADAPTATION OF JOHN GREEN’S COMING OF AGE ROMANCE NOVEL, THE FAULT IN OUR

STARS. THIS MAY, THOUGH, SEE HIM COME TO LIFE IN THE GIA COPPOLADIRECTED FILM, PALO ALTO, BASED ON

JAMES

FRANCO’S

BOOK

OF

SHORT STORIES, IN WHICH HE STARS ALONGSIDE FRANCO HIMSELF AND EMMA ROBERTS, A NOT-SO-DISTANT FRIEND.

“I was on Nickelodeon doing the Naked Brothers Band while Emma [Roberts] was on a Nickelodeon TV show. So we’d always have to do promo shoots and that kind of stuff together. She was a couple years older than me, but I always thought she was really cool,” says the rising star of his peer. His admiration for those who’ve paved their own path in Hollywood doesn’t stop there. Wolff also admires co-star James Franco, someone who he says he looks up to, not only as an actor but also as a Renaissance man. “His book Palo Alto: Stories, which inspired the film, was great,” says Wolff. “I really admire that he gave it to Gia [Coppola], a first-time writer and director, and had faith in her. She turned out to be a true talent and amazing person.” Working with the 27-year-old grand daughter of Francis Ford Coppola and niece of Sofia Coppola proved to be a learning experience for the young actor. The making of Palo Alto took place on the first set he’d worked on where all the department heads were women. “With Palo Alto, the experience was a very creative one. It was a much younger vibe, [with] a lot of improv and discovery. A lot of fun. We all lived together while making the movie. It was kind of like a crazy summer camp.” His involvement with his other projects holds a slightly different tune. He says to me in an almost confession-like manner, “I really want to go down, so everyone knows that I was the first one to give the book to Josh Boone, the director. I was given the book by my

113

co-star, Liana Liberato, from another movie Josh directed (Stuck In Love). She gave me the book and said, ‘You have to read this book, it’s great and it doesn’t have a director.’ I then gave the book to Josh, who said, ‘I’ll try. Nothing will happen, but I’ll try.’ He went in for a meeting and it all ended up working out.” The Admission star believes fans of the popular book will receive the movie well. He remarks that Palo Alto is an easy and smooth transition from book to screen, and that the movie will mirror the structure of the beloved book. But those who love Wolff’s portrayal of young Isaac won’t have to wait long till he’s back onscreen bringing another John Green character to life. Next up for him? Tackling the role of Quentin in the film adaptation of Paper Towns, Wolff will play a young man who shares a jarring experience with his neighbor that bonds them for life. Paper Towns brings back not only the producers, but also the screenwriters from The Fault In Our Stars for another go. With Paper Towns standing as Wolff’s favorite among Green’s novels, to say he’s ecstatic would be an understatement. “When I got cast as Isaac, everyone was flipping out that I didn’t have blonde hair. So I was getting all this hate mail on Twitter, and people coming up to me saying, ‘Don’t fuck the part up, Nat.’ When the news of Paper Towns came out, I worried that it would be the same thing, but it seems like everybody’s excited about it. I think it’s because I’ve got the right hair color this time.” May 2014 - BELLO

VIVA VANCOUVER:

10 Reasons to Visit British Columbia’s Multicultural Metropolis FOR YEARS MY KNOWLEDGE OF VANCOUVER WAS LIMITED TO WHAT I SAW ON TELEVISION. AS AN AVID FAN OF THE X-FILES, I GREW UP KNOWING IT TO BE AN ATMOSPHERIC CITY THAT COULD DOUBLE AS ANYWHERE, AMERICA DURING MULDER AND SCULLY’S EERIE INVESTIGATIONS. MY INTEREST WAS PIQUED EVEN FURTHER AFTER WATCHING THE 2010 WINTER OLYMPICS AND HEARING STORIES FROM FRIENDS WHO HAD EXPERIENCED IT ALL FOR THEMSELVES. THEREFORE, IT WAS MY TURN, AND AFTER VISITING BRITISH COLUMBIA’S SEAPORT METROPOLIS, I REALIZED THAT IT’S MORE THAN JUST AN ALTERNATE DESTINATION FOR HOLLYWOOD PRODUCTIONS. Here’s just a handful of reasons why you should put Vancouver at the top of your Travel Must List (In no particular order of course)… 1. The Canada Line – After being greeted by the indoor waterfall at the airport (a pleasantly surprising welcome), hop Yaletown

aboard the city’s quiet and smooth commuter rail and sit back because this is your chance to observe the multicultural stew of passengers who populate the city (yes, they’re called Vancouverites). And yes, each car even has a space for bicycles – because that’s how accommodating this place is. 2. Yaletown: To call this neighborhood “hip and trendy” would be reductive. This former industrial district experienced an urban rejuvenation several years back and is now a densely populated area thanks to its high-rise apartments, alluring shops, and easy access to the marina (take a ride on the Aquabus and see for yourself). And where else can you find an old-fashioned hat shop with a gin-and-tonic happy hour and live violins? Two words: Goorin Bros. 3. The Opus Hotel: Jimmy Kimmel had his bachelor party here. Lady Gaga recuperated here in between concerts. And I enjoyed two nights in this exquisite boutique haven where

each room comes equipped with an iPad and Samsung smartphone that guests can use at their leisure without worrying about data rates (one-touch dialing connects you to the Concierge wherever you are in the city). After a hard day of cardio (i.e. shopping), try winding down with a Year of the Horse cocktail in the lobby lounge while taking in the scent of “white tea essence” that lingers throughout the hallways. And if that isn’t enough luxury for you, take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary Jaguar car service. I did. The Opus Hotel

Rogers Arena

4. Rogers Arena: Home of the Vancouver Canucks, this massive stadium also happens to be the place where I experienced my first ever hockey game. Exciting. High energy. Exhilarating…Consider this neophyte a convert. *Affordable souvenir of choice: a Canucks puck for only six Canadian dollars. 5. Granville Island: This former warehouse district is now home to dozens of shops, restaurants, galleries, theaters, and Vancouver’s premiere farmers market. It’s also the country’s second most visited tourist destination (behind Niagara Falls). Looking to brush up on the ins and out of shellfish farming? Stop by The Lobster Man for a quick tour and crash course on clams.

6. Lunch at Edible Canada: Shortly after glimpsing some exhibits inside the Emily Carr University of Art and

119

Design, we grabbed a nearby bite at this cozy bistro and artisan shop that prides itself on promoting local food and crafting mouthwatering Canadian cuisine (tip: try the porchetta sandwich and duck fat fries). The gastropub vibe is friendlier than you’d expect, and if your taste buds can’t resist a second helping of the Canadian butter tart, come back for one of the interactive cooking tutorials. 7. Facials at Skoah – All of that eating, shopping, and sightseeing can take a lot out of a person, and the best thing to do is recharge at this spa located in the heart of Yaletown (a mere two-block walk from the Opus). The complimentary lip balm may come in handy during those chilly walks outside. And if you’re looking for a change in your beauty regimen, allow one of Skoah’s specialists to offer a “skin skedule” and product consultation. 8. Dinner at Hawksworth: Nestled in the legendary Rosewood Hotel Georgia, this restaurant is known for its Hawksworth Dinner

barrel-aged cocktails. Try El Matador, a bourbon and gin concoction that’ll provide a nice buzz. We dined in the Art Room under a customized installation called “Psychomania Variation III,” inspired by a 1971 British horror flick and created by artist Rodney Graham. For those who wish to stay sober, ask your server about the “zero proof” cocktail pairings that accompany each course of your meal. 9. Celebrities Nightclub: Davies Village is your best bet for a good dose of camp, and Thursday nights are no exception. Once you make it past the velvet rope, sit yourself down and buckle up for some over-the-top theatrics by some of BC’s best drag performers. All are welcome. 10. Stanley Park: Vancouver’s 1,001acre oasis of green is a slice of natural heaven amidst the hustle and bustle, and it has helped legitimize the city as one of the top worldwide places for quality of life. Its easy-to-navigate paths and waterfront sights draw millions of cyclists, skaters, and joggers every year – regardless of the weather. A

TYPICAL

RESORT

CONJURES UP IMAGES OF SUNNY SKIES, WARM WEATHER, WHITE SAND, AND CALM, BLUE OCEANS. THROW IN A VERY ATTENTIVE STAFF SERVING AN ENDLESS SUPPLY OF COCKTAILS AND IT’S THE IDEAL PLACE FOR A LITTLE REST AND RELAXATION. BUT EXOTIC DOESN’T ALWAYS HAVE TO EQUAL TROPICAL. DOES BLISS HAVE TO INCLUDE A BEACH? SOMETIMES IT DOESN’T.

Nestled among the hills of the São Paulo countryside resides Fazenda Boa Vista, Fasano’s first “farm” resort hotel in Brazil. Led by restaurateur and hotelier Rogerio Fasano and designed by renowned Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld, the hotel’s picturesque setting is perfectly integrated in its rural surroundings while blending tradition and sophistication in an ideal getaway destination. With interiors that hint at the purity of Bauhaus design principles, the natural materials add a twist of warmth with their soft tones and textures. The 27 deluxe rooms, 11 suites and one twobedroom suite (with over 1,620 square feet in which to graze about) allow 123

guests to admire their surroundings with views that frame picture windows like real-life paintings. With 24-hour room service, concierge and personal butlers, who would want to get out of bed? While vistas of rolling hills, acres of green grass, lush trees and wild flowers are incentives to leave the confines of one’s room, an 18-hole golf course by Randall Thompson and tennis courts to play on (with lessons on standby), an equestrian center with horseback riding, nature trails, native woods, 14 lakes, and a petting zoo keep those with a love of nature entertained for their stay. But a resort can’t rely on outdoor activities to keep its guests occupied. Many will want to partake in the creature comforts not normally found at home. Fazenda Boa Vista’s spa and fitness facilities encompass sauna and steam rooms, their signature Spa Fasano, and a fitness center with personal trainer

services, as well as beauty services available upon request. How about food? Restaurants and bars create mouth-watering meals and serve drinks with a white-glove mentality. Whether sipping or spa-ing, at the end of the day, the little things make a big difference.

And any resort that includes a heliport with six helipads on site is designed for those who want to feel – and most likely are – VIPs. That’s indulgent. Luxury is freedom, and freedom is an extravagance. Who said that a farm couldn’t be exotic?

HOW TO PARTY LIKE A

ROCK STAR

(in Palm Springs)

BY HIKO MITSUZUKA

COACHELLA’S OVER. BUT EVEN THOUGH THE BANDS AND DJS HAVE PACKED IT ALL UP AND

DEPARTED

THE

SOUTHERN

CALIFORNIA DESERT, THERE’S STILL PLENTY OF “ROCKING OUT” TO BE HAD -- THANKS TO THE BRAND SPANKIN’ NEW HARD ROCK HOTEL PALM SPRINGS.

Downtown PS, as any fan of dry climates will tell you, is experiencing a renaissance of sorts, and most of that is attributed to the opening of the latest Hard Rock property. Having recently visited this headline-making oasis (and partied with Tommy Lee and DJ Aero just sayin’), we’ve come up with a stepby-step guide on how to live it up and rock it out with the rest of ‘em. 1. Become a DJ with The Sound Of Your Stay - Step into the shoes of David

Guetta, Calvin Harris, or any other EDM spinmeister who’s blowing up the charts these days by taking advantage of this unique music amenity that allows guests to mix and remix their favorite tunes, personalize their own vacation soundtrack, and offers in-room Fender guitar lessons. “Music is the soul of the Hard Rock brand and it is what sets Hard Rock Hotels apart as a travel destination and truly unbeatable experience,”

3. Take a trip down Rock Star Memory Lane - Before calling it a night, take a stroll and take a gander at the memorabilia that’s on display throughout the premises. Because a little music education can go a long way...and you’ll want to know just how small in size Prince’s flamboyant outfits really are. 4. Get wet - What’s a trip to Palm Springs without a dip in a pool and some cabana lounging while stalking the hardbodied hottie you’ve had your eye on since knocking back a few martinis at the lobby bar the night before? A damn waste, that’s what.

stated Blake Smith, Hard Rock’s global director of music and marketing. “As Hard Rock celebrates groundbreaking trends and the freedom of creative exploration, amenities like [these] are a testament to the brand’s passion for both innovation and ingenuity.” 2. Try the Little Monster at Sessions Restaurant - Whether you’re nursing a hangover or a having a major case of morning munchies, stop by this glammed-up diner and get a load of these slices of Frosted Flakesencrusted Brioche French toast. A chocolate milk chaser is mandatory. Entrance

5. Detoxify with an algae body wrap at Rock Spa - After all of those late-night shenanigans, get pampered like you’ve never been pampered before (after all, you are your own rock star - you deserve to be spoiled). Let the healing wonders of seaweed replenish your senses. Or

start with the Classic Renewal Swedish massage before you take a whiff of some eucalyptis and lavender during an Energizing Salt Scrub.

It’s the

Simple Things… BY JOHN CULLEN

Get outside and go for a stroll while catching up on phone calls. More times than not, conversations end up running longer than expected or back-to-back and ultimately contribute towards time spent being stationary instead of active. Grab the dog and walk the neighborhood or local park. Take in some fresh air and get things moving. There’s a reason it’s called a “mobile” phone - think of it as multitasking.

STOP circling the parking lot - get out and walk! The time - and headache - spent circling the lot searching for the closest spot to the entrance is only adding to the time you already spend on your couch or in your office chair. It’s usually a sure bet you’ll find plenty of spots available further into the lot, and almost always, you end up in the store before the person with the close spot anyway. Don’t be lazy, be active!

© Ingram Publishing

Walk more and take the stairs instead of gunning for the escalator, elevator or moving walkway. Oftentimes, these devices are in airports, movie theaters and stadiums - places where you’re likely to be sitting in a confined space for an extended period of time, surrounded by less than nutritious food. When not pressed for time, get that blood flowing before and after you sit; your body will appreciate it!

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WERE TRAVELING AND NOTICED A PLETHORA OF HEALTHY SNACK AND FOOD OPTIONS ALONG THE WAY? GAS STATIONS, HIGHWAY RESTAURANTS, CONVENIENT STORES, AIRPORT FOOD COURTS, IN-FLIGHT SERVICES...THE LIST GOES ON. BUT REGARDLESS

To avoid succumbing to this black hole, make it a habit to never head out on an empty stomach, no matter what time your day may start. This includes a well-balanced meal (healthy proteins, carbs and fats) and plenty of hydration to kick start your day (and metabolism) and allow you plenty of time to get to, or well into, your destination before the hunger pains take over.

OF WHICH ONE YOU END UP WITH, THEY’RE ALL SEVERELY LACKING IN THIS AREA. I LIKE TO REFER TO IT AS THE JUNK FOOD BLACK HOLE.

If it sounds simple, that’s because it is, but it’s also equally important to never venture far without water and healthy snacks in tow. This becomes your safety net once your morning meal has burned off. It will hold you over for an additional few hours to help get you to your destination without giving in to the bad stuff. It’s something I’ve become quite notorious for, and it has saved me countless times. Check out my Top 5 Snacking On-TheGo options below and don’t miss Chef Ronnie Woo’s Super Easy Homemade Granola Bar recipe from this issue.

My TOP 5 Portable & Healthy Snacks: Almonds A great source of fiber, healthy fats and nutrients. Organic is preferable, but at least go with raw unsalted over roasted - they’re easy to digest and retain their vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, which your body requires. Raisins A great alternative for someone with a sweet tooth, these can provide you with a boost of energy as a result of natural sugars. Raisins support urinary tract health, promote memory function, and support cellular and brain health. Mix with a handful of almonds for a more hearty taste. Hard Boiled Eggs Organic pasture-raised eggs are the way to go here. The healthier the egg, the better the quality of protein, vitamins, amino acids and good - yes, there is good - cholesterol you will absorb. Only 68 calories in total for this portable and complete meal. Beef /Turkey Jerky These are a great source of protein when it’s prepared properly – a.k.a. grass-fed – but stay away from the stuff with antibiotics, added hormones, nitrates, MSG, soy, gluten, or added sugar. There’s no need for any of these. Choose nutrients over flavor. Water Dehydration is too often confused as hunger, so we end up eating when we should be hydrating with water. Water regulates the metabolism and hydrates cells so that they can more efficiently process what we eat and drink. Without enough of it, we’re setting a course for destruction. Bring a bottle with you everywhere you go and help the environment by getting a BPA-free reusable water canister.

BELLO LOCKER BY: JOHN CULLEN

ECOROX From ECOXGEAR, the makers of the ECOTERRA (previously featured in BELLO Locker) comes the ECOROX, an advanced portable and rugged Bluetooth speaker for taking your

music with you everywhere you go. Like its predecessor, this essential piece of gear can float on or be submersed in water, but offers a more compact design with built-in mounting abilities,

allowing for an easy connection to handlebars, paddleboard, dashboards, etc. to provide you with 10 hours of playing time.

SmartLantern SmartLantern is a lantern, flashlight and rechargeable station for your mobile devices all in one. Its rechargeable battery offers 48 hours of flashlight or lantern illumination or up to five full charges to your mobile device, and holds a charge for up to one year. It’s perfect for your next camping trip and makes a great addition to roadside emergency kits to keep you from getting stranded in the dark with no juice.

Gold’s Gym Power Slide Discs Like a jump rope or resistance bands, Power Slide Discs are a fantastic - and very affordable - portable workout accessory when traveling or confined to a hotel room. These double-sided discs can be used on carpet or hard surfaces to create an unstable environment when placed under your hands or feet. This helps to maximize your muscle reaction and further engage your core for a more complete workout. Try a round of mountain climbers with a pair of these under your feet and feel the burn. 133

The Scene: A behind-the-scenes look at

ME WITH A WARM SMILE. SHE TAKES MY BAGS AND ESCORTS ME TO THE TALENT HOLDING AREA. THE IDEA OF ME BEING IN THE “TALENT HOLDING” AREA STILL TICKLES MY BRAIN.

As a stylist, I don’t find myself in front of the camera often. Generally speaking, stylists are like fashion priests; we deal with designers and consumers. It is our job to marry the two. Rarely are we in front of the camera, unless it’s our own and we are taking selfies. After getting settled, I did what any girl would do: went to craft services to get me some food. I was hungry! While I was at craft services making my own custom trail mix, the producer informed me that it was time to do a quick testimonial before my challenge. “Move over to the Macy’s Style Star host Jeannie Mai.

At that exact moment I thought to myself, God, wherever you are, thank you for all the events of my life that has led up to this moment. GEMINI

You are just beginning. The iron is hot, Gemini. Strike! Take a look around and you will begin to see opportunities that you hadn’t noticed before. Believe in yourself!

CANCER

Give yourself some time and space to just be. Life is not all about competition. It would benefit you to rest and do nothing.

LEO

Go on a trip, lovable Leo! Get away, go out and explore! A little trip away from the norm will allow you to truly feel that change that is taking place in your life right now.

VIRGO

Where do your strengths lie? It’s a good idea for you to figure this out. Once you’re clear on what you’re best at, make sure to let those in the position of hiring you know.

LIBRA

You have finally overcome some painful part of your past. It is now time to focus on what’s next. Where do you see yourself in six months? In five years? Imagine and create the life that you want.

Sept. 23- Oct. 22

SCORPIO Oct. 23- Nov. 22

This is a good month for you to talk to someone you trust about how you’ve been feeling lately. You’ve been holding back, keeping things buried inside. When you’re ready to get things off your chest, it’s important you stay calm and stay in the moment.

SAGITTARIUS

Ask for help when you need it! You work so hard and take on pretty much every project that is thrown at you. Remember, you don’t have to do everything on your own.

Nov. 23 – Dec. 20

CAPRICORN Dec. 21 – Jan. 18

Pay special attention to your health this month. Are you getting enough sleep? Exercising at least three times a week? What’s your diet like? Are you eating healthy foods? It’s these little things that are affecting the way you operate in the world. Take baby steps to change what needs to be changed.

AQUARIUS

Moderation is key for you this month! Find a healthy balance between work, play, and family. Spending too much time on one thing can create dissonance, and harmony is needed in order to thrive.

ARIES

Everyone and everything in your life needs your attention. Friendships, partnerships, co-workers...they all need something from you. Find a way to balance yourself in your partnerships and with your goals.
