EDITOR Yes, it is all about Brazil now, and we’ve also got the fever. When we organized this issue a few months ago, we wanted it to be different from anything else you would read. We wanted a true story of Brazil, not only celebrating this amazing nation, but also talking about its reality. First, we asked our amazingly talented contributor Amanda Elkins ( who is Brazilian herself) to take the reigns and help us put together this issue by being a guest editor, and we had so much fun working together.
Then we picked our favorite ‘Homeland’ star, (who happens to be the sexiest Brazilian in Los Angeles), MORENA BACCARIN to grace our cover. We wanted to make sure that our cover symbolizes the beauty, fashion, diversity and power of the awakening giant. Besides our main theme, you will find the usual Bello subjects such as entertainment, beauty, fashion, music, sports. Of course, we included a list of amazing talent to grace those inside covers and be part of our features. It gets bloody with NELSAN ELLIS; the staff had to dance with BRIANA EVIGAN, and embrace NICKY WHELAN’s beauty. Also we fell in love with dancers STEPHEN “tWitch” BOSS & ALLISON HOLKER (from ‘So You Think You Can Dance’) and had to sing with JESSE MCCARTNEY. And last but not least, we had fun with GISELLE ITIE, SINQUA WALLS, TEO HALM, MARTHA MEDEIROS and GUI INACIO. Brazilians rise from reticence BY MICHELLE CHANG
BRAZIL: A NATION OF NEARLY 200 MILLION PEOPLE, 26 STATES, COUNTLESS PRIME EXPORTS, AND SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WORLD. DISRUPTIVE SCIENTIFIC DEVELOPMENTS, INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED FESTIVALS, VIBRANT CITIES, AND SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST BEAUTIFUL AND WARM PEOPLE ARE ONLY A FEW OF THE NATION’S OUTSTANDING CHARACTERISTICS. DESPITE THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS IN 2008, IT IS ONE OF THE FIRST ECONOMIC MARKETS TO GROW AND RECOVER FROM THE RECESSION, OUTPERFORMING ANY OTHER SOUTH AMERICAN ECONOMY. razil is currently a buzzword in the international sphere. Current events are being widely publicized and put on an international platform because people are interested in this country that currently is producing so much news in various spheres. The advent of the FIFA World Cup has put a spotlight on Brazil and the controversy surrounding public spending on soccer is a topic of high interest. In addition, violence and police brutality has put the country under international scrutiny. While

all of this is happening, the Brazilian people are not sitting still. In particular, issues with rising bus fares, political corruption, and skewed public funding are causing the people to rise up. The South American giant is waking up after years of turbulence that has gone unacknowledged by authorities, and is demanding crucial social, political and economic change. The demand for change began in a slow but steady movement that included peaceful organized demonstrations among the likeminded. Unhappiness with increased bus fares caused citizens to feel the initial pressures of suppression. The relatively small demonstrations in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte in August and September of 2012 were successful 10
in changing fare prices, which would eventually act as the catalyst for many more to come across the country. When the train and metro fares rose in Sao Paolo, demonstrations took place in objection of more than just the ticket fares. The government was under attack for not just raising ticket prices, but also for turning a blind eye to promises made to citizens. The federal government had initially announced that public transportation would not be subject to extra taxes, which would prevent the rise in price. Nevertheless, fares were raised and the protests began. The first large protest that acted as the catalyst for the protests to follow throughout the summer began on June 6th in Sao Paolo’s famed Paulista Avenue. On June 13, 2013, it was reported that police had lost control of the crowd and resorted to violent measures. Over 100 people were injured and more than 120 were arrested in downtown Sao Paolo. This particular demonstration received international coverage, and from then on out, the rest of the world was watching. Numbers of protests then mobilized and sparked continuous national interest. At one given point on June 20th, there were protests in over 100 cities around the country. Special security measures were even put into place at the major government buildings, attesting to the incredible number of people that gathered to protest, not to mention the power of the masses. The demonstrations were in response to not just rising bus fares and inflation, but also issues with police brutality, wealth inequality, and lack of action in the incumbent President Dilma Rousseff’s administration. Overall disenchantment and unhappiness with the government caused people all over Brazil to stand up. Later in 2013, similar protests took place in other cities, including Brasilia, Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro. During these protests, many students, young people, and innocent bystanders were hurt. The countrywide protests against rising bus fares were just a very tangible way for Brazilians to take action against their government. There were more issues 11

that go beyond public transportation fares rising, many of which are still subject to objection today. The wealth inequality, inflation of goods and products, incredible taxes that are estimated to be above 40% of income, and lack of quality public education are all but a few of the issues that Brazilians want to change. In particular, corruption in the government is causing grief for citizens, especially the fact that the citizens of today are paying for the corruption of the past. Current citizens are being held responsible for the costs of the scandal of 2003, called the Mensalao, during which public funds were used to buy campaign support for the then-Lula di Silva administration. Public funds were also used to pay off election campaign debts. Those involved were discovered in 2005, found guilty in 2012, and imprisoned just last year after multiple delays. The money funneled into corruption in Brazil as of 2010 was 1.38% to 2.3% of GDP according to a study by the FIESP, the Federation of Industries of Sao Paulo State. The country’s total GDP according to the CIA website is $2.422 trillion as of 2013. By these numbers, between $32 billion and $51 billion is “spent” on corruption. Billions of dollars that could go into public education, hospitals, infrastructure— anything potentially constructive for society and the country—is being used for the wrong reasons. It is no surprise that Brazilians, the young people especially, feel the need for change. While billions are spent on corruption, and $7 billion was spent on infrastructure for the FIFA World Cup, while an additional $4 billion is going to be spent on various stadiums for the matches. There is confusion as to why the government is doing this to the people, especially when there are obviously other pressing issues that could positively affect Brazil. In addition, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will also face objection. Already, some of the favelas in Rio are facing eviction for game-related purposes. And of course, money is always an issue. Allegedly, $51 billion was spent in Sochi for the Winter Olympics, and there is no doubt that billions will pour into the Olympics.

Perhaps the government thinks that by hosting the World Cup and the Olympics, the people will have something to brag about, something to be proud about. Perhaps this is a way for the authorities to turn a blind eye to the serious issues plaguing the country. Unfortunately, whatever the country’s leaders believe they can do, or believe they can hide; the people have opened their eyes. They are refusing to let themselves be exploited and banding together to provoke changes and reforms in a country that can provide so much more, if only the government were to care. Brazil is a proud culture, a proud nation, but to them, a bit of soccer isn’t going to cut it. They are fighting for human rights, for political correctness, and an overall better standard of living. With the upcoming sporting events
along with the Presidential election later this year, there is no telling what exactly might happen. We can be sure; however, that Brazil’s people will not go down without a fight. Relapse is not an option, and it is with a fiery passion that they will fight on. While these protests and riots take place, it is hard to keep in mind all that the country has to offer, and to dwell on the instability of the society today. Despite the number of societal problems that Brazilians face, there is no shortage of hope. They are fighting for their rights, and standing up because they believe there is potential for change. And there is not only potential for change, but also the potential for incredible growth, national unity and ultimately, a better tomorrow.

HER SKILL AT GIVING RELATABILITY TO CHARACTERS IN ATYPICAL SITUATIONS HAS BROUGHT HER INTERNATIONAL FANS AND WON HER AN EMMY NOMINATION LAST YEAR FOR OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES PLAYING JESSICA BRODY ON SHOWTIME’S SMASH HIT HOMELAND.
Given the chance to toss her a few questions, one of the things I was curious to learn was if her work on Homeland had made her more attuned to government activities around the world --particularly since the series has recently been mentioned by the mainstream media for its similarities to the real world case of P.O.W. Bowe Bergdahl, (the American soldier who was swapped for five Taliban Guantanamo prisoners last month)-and although Baccarin allowed that it ‘probably’ has, the difference was not obvious. “I have always tried to keep up with the latest news,” she added. That statement is evident given her offscreen commitment to the humanitarian relief group, International Rescue Committee. As an IRC Voice, she helps to raise awareness of the plight of refugees and also works to promote one of the group’s goals of protecting and empowering women and girls from around the world.
Inara especially, who as a Companion to both men and women, was that rare female character that was straightforward and forthright about sex in general but who wasn’t crass or in some way a victim. “I loved playing that role,” Baccarin said. “She was classy and sexy and smart. What more could you want?”
Firefly fans once again got their browncoats in a twist this past April when news hit the internet that Netflix would produce all new episodes of the series for its streaming service. It turned out to be an April Fool’s Day prank, which was familiar ground for the cast of the show. “We all pranked each other all the time,” she acknowledged. “It was very fun. It’s been a while so I don’t remember anything specific.” As to her own thoughts about bringing new life to the cult favorite she revealed, “I selfishly would love to work with everyone again. But I do feel like it might be time to let it go and be what it was.

hands dirty in a fun way “whenever possible”. She explained, “having a child keeps you young in that way.” Out of all the characters Baccarin has played, Homeland’s Brody is the one she admits is closest to this new reallife role but she is also careful not to mix practicing her craft when playing with her toddler. “I try to keep my work and personal life as separate as possible,” Baccarin insisted. “Obviously I use parts of myself for different roles. But I am mostly unaware. Otherwise it would make me self-conscious.” It seems like a firm line she’s drawn for herself -- to not bring her work home with her. Even when asked if she might draw on any of her former characters in dealing with real-world situations she answered, “Not really. When I am done with a role I let it go.” Looking forward, we can expect to see a departure from Baccarin’s heavier roles in the upcoming feature comedy Spy from Bridesmaids director Paul Feig, which also features Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jude Law, Allison Janney, Jason Statham, and others. “It was really fun to improvise and work with such amazing actors,” Baccarin extolled. “I learned a lot and got to flex a new muscle.” Lastly, while doing research online, I was struck by how much interest there seemed to be with Baccarin’s hair. Seriously, google “Morena Baccarin hair”. The pages go on and on. The fascination reached a fever pitch when she debuted on V having replaced her long flowing locks with an extreme pixie cut, so I had to ask how it felt that first night after having it chopped off. “I loved it right away,” she proclaimed. “It was a shock, but I really liked it. It changed my attitude about myself and my clothes.” With performances as stellar as the ones she has already given us, I can’t wait to see what changes she has in store for us down the road.

Nelsan Ellis has sunk his teeth into quite a few meaty roles since his time at NYC’s famous Julliard School, but admittedly, none quite like Lafayette… “He’s tender sometimes. He’s tough sometimes. He’s hard sometimes. He’s feminine sometimes. He’s masculine sometimes. He’s a fighter sometimes. He speaks to the dead… I mean I’m playing such a multi-faceted individual and I don’t know if I’ll ever get to play a character like this again.” It’s a reasonable doubt, even when you have the type of resume that Ellis does. After all, how often does an actor get to play someone so comfortable in his own skin, so unabashedly himself, that trifling things like external opinion or constructed norms mean little to nothing? Fortunately, much like his character, the actor isn’t one to ruin a moment by worrying too much about the future… “I take it as it goes. I mean, it’s bittersweet in the end, having worked with these wonderful people for 7 years, but I’m taking (the show’s end) as it goes.” 29
You don’t get to where Mr. Ellis has surviving severe parental dysfunction, time spent as a ward of the state, and even a short-lived stint in The Marines - by sweating the small stuff. But you also don’t get there without a healthy dose of talent, passion, and gratitude either; qualities the Illinois-born actor possesses in spades. Want proof? Just listen to him reflect on his years as Lafayette: “The most fulfilling part of playing Lafayette is actually playing Lafayette. It’s been a privilege to play him.” Or talk acting… “Being able to live in a character, transform all the stuff that I have inside of me, and all the stuff from my life –all the junk – and transform it into a character, to rebuild myself into a whole something anew and then start over and get lost in that world and forget about mine.” And Ellis recently got to do just that, disappearing into the role of James Brown’s “bestie”, Bobby Byrd, in the much-anticipated Tate Taylor-directed
biopic of the iconic soul man, “Get On Up” (due out later this year). It’s a part that required that he not only act his butt off, but also sing, play piano, and dance as well as the legendary Byrd, and as you can imagine for a chameleon like Nelsan, it was heaven. “I was in piano lessons, band rehearsal, song rehearsal… Everything was music on that set. Even when we were shooting, we would wrap and then go and rehearse. It was grueling. Reluctant Fundamentalist (opposite Kiefer Sutherland, Liev Schreiber, and Riz Ahmed) and Lee Daniels’ The Butler, in which he played Martin Luther King Jr. (“I was a bit surprised that Lee offered (the part) to me, but right away of course I said yes. I would work with him all day long and twice on Sunday.”), it might sound like he’s being falsely modest, but the guy really is an actor’s actor, content to learn from and more importantly play with anyone who’s serious about the work. Like Kevin Alejandro, who memorably played Lafayette’s sexy, sweet and ultimately doomed soul mate, Jesus, on seasons 3 and 4 of True Blood: “They asked me to come in an audition with Kevin, and immediately we had good chemistry. It was so easy to work with him...” Clearly the fans noticed it. In fact, many are still holding out for some sort of supernaturalspurned reconciliation – seriously, stranger things have happened… but Ellis knows better than to give any real deets on this last season. However he does hint that there might still be love in Lafayette’s future. And more importantly, he doesn’t flinch when proclaiming himself “happy with the character’s resolution.” Not bad considering that Lafayette didn’t even survive the first book of Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse series (upon which Allen Ball’s show is based). But then again, when you have an actor as skilled, versatile, and fearless as Nelsan Ellis, you have a bet worth taking… hedging be damned!

If you can describe your character in STARZ original series, ‘POWER’ in three words what would they be? Alert, Inquisitive, Motivated
to give people an ear and hear their stories. The team aspect of preparing the meals to be distributed is a very memorable part for me.
What did you enjoy most about being a part of this show? It was a joy to get to work with such talented people from production, to the writing staff, to my fellow actors. I thoroughly enjoyed the bringing all aspects of the show together.
You have an enormous amount of experience in acting in T.V. shows, to name a few, ‘Teen Wolf’, ‘The Secret Life of The American Teenager’, and ‘Friday Night Lights’. You have appeared in a couple of movies, one where you were nominated for ‘Best Lead Actor’ from the Southern California and Pan
African Film Festivals for your leading role in ‘The Second Half’. Can you tell me what you enjoy most about acting in T.V. Shows? Which show and role did you connect to the most and why? I’m a fan of both TV and film, but I mostly love acting as a whole. The ability to be creative and spontaneous are my favorite things about acting. Each day experiencing new circumstances and allowing your character to live through you.
Please explain the moment when you knew acting was the right profession for you. I knew I wanted to be an actor since I was eleven years old. What techniques do you use to develop into character? I don’t think there’s one specific technique you can use but actually a merging together of them all. Meisner, Chekov, and Adler all have to be a part of the tool box because at some points one works better than others depending on the moment. You played college basketball for Cal Poly Pomona as well as University of San Francisco. Fans watched you showed off your skills when you were ‘Devon Langer’ in USA’s T.V. show ‘Necessary Roughness’ Was it ever a goal of yours to play for the NBA? If so, what team would you love to play for? Of course every young kid grows up with that dream. But acting and the arts were always my passion. For me when the time came to choose it was a natural decision. It’s generous of you giving back to your community. Why did you choose to volunteer at LA Foodbank? What is a memorable memory you have there? LA food bank is very hands on in the community. I really love programs that connect you with the people you are helping so you can see how your efforts have an impact. And you get a chance

It was crazy doing the driving scene. I was 13 at the time, so I couldn’t drive legally. The stunt team had to put a stunt driver in the back of the van to control the car, but because he was in the van they had to hide him from the camera. They built a wooden box around him with no windows so they had to radio him instructions. In the end it looked like I was driving, which was awesome. As for talking to something that wasn’t there, there were times I had to pretend Echo was in my hand, so it was kind of interesting talking to my hand where he was supposed to be. You have been performed in multiple plays such as ‘The Sound of Music’… How was the transition from plays to films? I did “The Sound of Music” at this summer camp called Catskills West. I was about 8 at the time so I was pretty inexperienced. I played one of the main characters Rolf so there were quite a few lines to memorize and you have to do it in one take on stage. It was cool transitioning to film because there are multiple takes.

You have worked with James Franco two times in his biopic film, ‘Bukowski’ where you were cast as the Germanborn American writer, Henry Charles Bukowski young friend. Also you acted as a rebellious skater boy skater boy in Franco’s movie ‘Memoria’. Do you admire Franco? If so, are there any favorites that he starred in or directed? James is such a great dude. He’s always super into his work, but at the same time he’s a super funny and a cool guy. I like his style of directing because he’s been on both sides of the camera, so he knows how to word his thoughts well to me the actor. I liked him in “Spring Breakers” as well as 127 hours. They were both examples of his range in acting. Have you read any of Bukowski stories or poetry? Did you enjoy dressing in a different time period? I read his poem “2 Flies” and I liked it a lot. Dressing for the 1930’s was one thing - scratchy. Everything was a thick scratchy wool material. Even before the wardrobe fitting, they shaved the sides of my head and left the top long. I looked completely different. Being a skateboarder yourself, did you find it extremely comfortable transforming yourself into this character in ‘Memoria’? My character in “Memoria” was a skater so it was easy for me to get in that mindset. There were some shots at a skate park where we had to ride around. It wasn’t exactly difficult and I felt really comfortable playing this part - except for the fact that I do NOT smoke cigarettes.

Have you experienced pressure and if so what advice could you give high school students like yourself? Thankfully I have never really been peer pressured. As kids we are taught to never give into peer pressure, so if people pressure you just say NO. You are extremely active not only do you skateboard you are a “Yankee” on the soccer field. What position in the mid field do you play? Why did you choice his position? Do you assert a mindset of a midfielder in your everyday life? I play left midfield and center midfield. I’ve played soccer for 11 years so I have had a chance to play every position at one point. I like Mid because I can control the game and getting a lot of goals is fun too. I guess if I wanted to get all metaphoric I would say that in everyday life I strive to set good things up. From reading your bio your fans have learned you enjoy traveling with your family. What are some of your favorite
countries to travel to? Name three items you must pack with you? I go to Australia, Morocco, and France regularly because those are my nationalities. My dad is Australian with British/Czech descent, and my mom is French Moroccan. I always pack my board shorts, my GoPro, and my Vans. Are there any T.V. shows that you’re into now that you love to binge watch or would enjoy being a special guest in? I just finished watching “White Collar” and it’s up there in my favorite shows along with “Touch” and “24.” I would love to guest-star on “Under the Dome.” I read the book, so I’ve always found it interesting. Where do you see yourself in the next couple of years? Will prom be on the list? What celebrity crush would you love to take? My ultimate goal is to continue acting, so hopefully everyone will see a lot of me, whether it’s on TV or in theaters. At the moment I’m a bit young to go to prom, but I’ve always wanted to so maybe I can find a cute girl to take. I would love to take Mila Kunis or Scarlett Johansson!!
You were in a short film called 15 directed by Ben Tan & Luka Joncich which can be viewed on YouTube. In the film you were being pressured from your older brother’s friends to play a game that could zap you. Yeah, Ben and Luka as well as the other people who helped make it had this idea to make a peer pressure film for a Røde Microphone competition. We had this little game that shocks you and we decided to do something on

I’m a person who believes, first of all, in justice, freedom and love. If I were a character I’d be just like Mafalda (the Argentinian Cartoon, by Quino ). I’m always questioning the world and trying to understand all that mess, based in these three things: Justice, Freedom and Love. 2. You were born in Mexico, but raised in Brazil and now working internationally. Where is home to you? I feel like a gypsy. I’ve been to lot of places and I carry all of them in my heart. I was born in Mexico; I’m living in Brazil; I Love New York; and I have plans to get older in Italy. My blood is a mixture of Mexican, Brazilian, Italian, French, Spanish, English, Arabian...It’s hard to choose a place to call home. 3. When did you realize you wanted to become an actress and how did it all begin? When I was a child, I had a dream to become a clown. I grew up with that in mind, and realized that the base to be a clown is acting. My parents didn’t give me support, so I had to lie to them and asked them to go back to Mexico to improve my Spanish, when, in fact, I was there to study theater. I was 15. Then, I went to Moscow to study at GITIS UNIVERSITY. At 18, I came back to Brazil and got a role in a soap opera. Since then, I’ve never stopped studying and working on TV, movies and theater.

4. Back in 2010 you starred in “The Expendables”. How was your experience working with Stallone as a co-star and director? I met Stallone on a weird day. I was out (with a broken leg) taking my puppy to the vet, when I received the call to do July 2014 - BELLO

the interview with Stallone. I got there completely lost and, to be honest, even now, I have no idea how I got that role. During the audition though, things were different, I was prepared! On the set...ah, Stallone is such a great director! He knows exactly what he wants and it made me feel secure, even to play the most dangerous scene without a stunt (being water boarded). First, he was afraid of me doing that myself. He didn’t want me to do it. But I always like to take part of everything that can happen to my character, and we were working with a great professional crew. No risk at all. I persuade him and in the end, both of us were satisfied with the result. I can say, for sure, that was a big challenge for me, and I’ve learned a lot playing Sandra side by side with those legends of action movies.

5. Stallone spoke well of your character in the Brazilian version of “Ugly Betty”. Ugly Betty was a very successful T.V.show in America. How was the Brazilian experience for you? Being the Brazilian Ugly Betty was one of the best things in my life. It’s a beautiful story based on ugly duckling which helps you to discover yourself. I have a special connection with Betty; cause no matter your appearance, there is a moment in your life that you’d feel just like Betty, Insecure and fragile. Through this character I could meet a lot of teenagers who saw themselves in Betty. I still receive lots of love from the fans and we created a group called “Familia Vamo que Vamo” ( Go go Family ) and we work as volunteers on children’s hospitals. The greatest thing of it is see these young fans growing up and understanding how important it is to share your time, attention and respect with those who need it. 6. Filming Chilean’s Caleuche:Call of The Sea (Buena Vista/Disney productions) must have been intense! Tell us a little bit about that? Caleuche was my first experience of acting in a fantasy movie. That universe was completely different of everything that I’ve played before. Besides that,

it is a traditional Chilean legend which tells the story of a woman who becomes a mermaid. It’s the culture of that country, so I felt all that responsibility, but I am so thankful to Jorge Olguin for trusting me to play Pincoya. 7. What are the plans for the future? We sure hope to see a lot more of you! Now I’m producing and writing a T.V. series that I idealized eight years ago about actress’s lives. It’s going to be my first time directing, so I’m pretty excited and completely focused on this! 8. How hard is it going to be watching Brazil play against Mexico this world cup, having a Mexican father and a Brazilian mother? I haven’t decided yet. But I’m definitely not going to be at my parents’ house to watch this game. Just kidding! In fact, I’m a bit out of this world cup celebration. Every time that I think of it, comes in my mind the real situation of Brazil. We are suffering in poverty; people are dying in hospitals; our children don’t have a good education cause there is no school; and all the money is going on things that are so far not the priority of our people. It’s sad.

Garden State:
10 Years Later...and Still Loving It RESIDENT POP CULTURE JUNKIE HIKO MITSUZUKA REVISITS 2004 WHILE REFLECTING ON THE TWENTYSOMETHING ANGST OF THE ZACH BRAFF-NATALIE PORTMAN DRAMA THAT (MAYBE) DEFINED A GENERATION. This month, Zach Braff is releasing Wish I Was Here, his directorial “thematic follow-up” to 2004’s Garden State, a movie that resonated with many twentysomething’s back in its time, including yours truly. And to celebrate Garden’s upcoming 10th anniversary later this summer, I wanted to revisit the feelings and experiences I had when this film was originally released. There appears to be much disdain for Garden State now. People who loved the film a decade ago balk at it now, calling it a pretentious piece of woe-isme crap about self-involved youth. But isn’t being in your 20s all about being preoccupied with trivial concerns? Are these recent criticisms simply a result of a group of people growing up and looking back on a time they don’t wish to remember?

Watching it again, the movie holds up quite well. There are nuances and details you may not have picked up the first time around. Just like Jesse David Fox did when he wrote his Vulture.com
piece defending the movie’s relevance last year:
“And these details get lost when you instead focus on what you find insufferable about what the film symbolizes and whom it represents. Yes, at one point, Largeman literally screams into the infinite abyss while “Only Living Boy in New York” plays, but that’s hardly the whole movie. It might be heavy-handed, but it is an accurate and compelling portrayal of a young man who feels like a bystander to his own life. As we get older, it’s easy to ignore that reality, but there’s a reason the film resonated and still resonates.” Why it still resonates and has a special place in my overstuffed heart is because it’s a time capsule, representing a time in my life when (I thought) I was just starting to get the hang of being a Twenty something. There were the lines of dialogue that stuck in my head (“Maybe that’s all family really is: a group of people that miss the same imaginary place.”). There was the achingly poignant soundtrack (Frou Frou’s “Let Go” still strikes me to this day). And for the first time in a long time, it was a movie that truly spoke to me, beautifully capturing through its indie charm what I was going through, what I was thinking and feeling. Maybe, in another ten years, opinions will shift
again and view this film as a hallmark GenY classic. Maybe. The movie’s been accused of being “a poser.” Maybe so. But it’s only because that’s what twenty somethings do. They distract themselves with petty shit as a way to avoid the inescapable reality that they’re official adults now, that they will have to eventually grow the f**k up. I, as a wide-eyed Los Angeles newbie in 2004, could’ve been seen as a poser. I admittedly tried to emulate the L.A. I thought L.A. was at the time. I made dinner reservations at Ashton Kutcher’s restaurant on Melrose (anyone remember Dolce?). I bought overpriced ironic T-shirts -- but never a trucker cap, thank God. I obsessed about brunch at Toast on 3rd Street. And I even met friends for cocktails at The Standard, just because. Looking back, I probably indulged in these things because reality kept slapping me in the face that year. I had quit my first “real world” job because it was going nowhere. I had jumped into the freelance world for the first time and subsequently experienced my first bout with unemployment. Earlier that summer, my father suffered from a stroke, waking me up to my parents’ mortality.
Garden State came around at the right time. And for that, I am grateful. Now, if Braff’s Wish I Was Here has any comments about the Thirtysomething Experience, I will gladly look forward to what it has to say.

My ears perked when I first heard that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, would be taking on the Legendary half man, half God (after all, I still have the sour taste in my mouth of Kellan Lutz’s milk toast Mikey version of the guy in January’s” craptastic” ‘The Legend Of Hercules’). But after seeing the killer trailer, featuring a decidedly grittier, pumped up “Herc’, consider me officially excited. Heck, even Brett Ratner at the reins can’t kill this one for me.

After all, the guy’s directed some serious onscreen bad asses (‘La Femme Nikita’, ‘The Professional’) but combined with Johansson’s deadly smolder, this one looks like it will at least be interesting.

SET AT AN ALL-STAR DANCE COMPETITION IN VEGAS, THE FILM FINDS THE ACTRESS REPRISING THE ROLE OF ANDIE JUST ONE OF THE MANY FAN-FAVES THAT HAVE RETURNED FOR THIS FIFTH AND LATEST INSTALLMENT - AND NATURALLY, SHE COULDN’T BE HAPPIER: “THE WHOLE TOMBOY, TOUGH GIRL, SWEET PERSONALITY, EASY AND FUN, IS A BIG PIECE OF ME, SO COMING BACK TO (HER) WAS GREAT. But what hasn’t changed at all for Andie is her need to get out there and bust a move; something she shares with the talented - if slightly out of practice actress who plays her. “After ‘Step Up 2’, I did kind of stop dancing, so when they cast me, I immediately went back into dance training and doing privates with the choreographers that were on board for ‘Step Up: All In’. I trained hard for about a month.” Four weeks doesn’t seem like that long of a time, considering the incredibly technical, impossibly intricate dance sequences that fans have come to expect of these films, but when you’ve trained since the age of 9, it’s a lot like riding a bicycle… for the most part: “I’ll always love dancing and it comes back to me pretty quickly, but the older you get, the more tiring it can be, and the harder it is to connect your body to your brain, with the choreography remembering it all and making it look good of course.” Difficult as it may be, the high-energy entertainer has a knack for making things not only look good, but also effortless, whether she’s acting, dancing, or saddled up to a piano, singing her heart out. “I just love performing in general. Being live, being in front of an audience, putting in all the work and feeling so good about the outcome. There’s this energy and gratitude behind it all when you’re done; it’s just the best feeling!” You could say it’s a passion that runs in her blood, growing up the youngest

child of actor/musician Greg Evigan (‘B.J. and The Bear’, ‘My Two Dads’) and his wife, Pamela Serpe, a dancer/model/actress. In fact, both of her siblings have entered into the family business as well, but don’t get it twisted; this isn’t some sort of Jackson situation. “(My parents) never embedded it in us that we had to do something entertainment related, but all of us started picking up different things, probably from seeing or watching them, and now we’re all doing what we always wanted to do.” And for Briana, that means continually searching for ways to engage her boundless energy and creativity. Affectionately dubbed a scream queen for her work in a slew of guilty-pleasure horror features (‘Sorority Row’, ‘The Devil’s Carnival’) the actress now finds herself wanting to take on more dramatic work for the next phase of her ever-evolving career (“I love character pieces where you really get to dive into the people onscreen”). Who is Martha Medeiros? (describe yourself) A Brazilian woman, who loves fashion and who wishes she could shower in glamour all the women in the world. Where does the inspiration for your line come from? My inspiration comes from each and every woman in the world, starting with my “rendeiras” (women who hand make the fabric), who have worked with me for so many years and are an example of life for all people. They are strong, hardworking and determined. They are real women that truly inspire me. What has been the biggest milestone for your company? The biggest milestone for my company was when I was invited to show my collection at Bergdorf Goodman, in NY. There, I had the opportunity to show my creations to a lot of people in fashion. It was definitely a memorable time for me! Celebrities most likely to be spotted wearing your clothes are... Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Amanda Setton, many Brazilian stars such as Ivete Sangalo, Xuxa, Claudia Leitte, Mariana Rios, Mariana Weickert, Sabrina Sato, and many more... What would you say is your design signature? Handmade Brazilian lace is the most prominent feature of my pieces. It’s a very rare type of lace and made completely by hand. Nowadays, all fashion designers use machine made lace. However, I rather continue to use handmade lace, emphasizing the craftswoman work who produce this truly unique material. Can you tell us a little bit about Brazilian lace? Few years ago the Handmade Brazilian Lace was fading away. Its tradition was becoming extinct and I decided I wasn’t

about to let that happen, so I started to work towards bringing back the lace culture in Brazil. I appreciate the stipendiary work of these craftswomen for the amazing work they do. Today, there are several organized co-ops where many women are learning to improve the lace making technique. Do you see a lot of difference between how the Brazilian woman relates to fashion when compared to women in other parts of the world? In each corner of the world, women see fashion in a different way, thus choosing many different ways to dress. In some countries women are a bit sexier, in others more reserved. Some places tend to love more colorful pieces, while others go for a more monochromatic approach. But deep inside, they all want the same thing: To feel great (and beautiful) whatever way they choose to dress up like. Bringing out their best in the way they choose to dress is what I find more appealing in what I do.Â

After getting her start as a TV presenter and sports reporter in her native Oz, it wasn’t long before the effervescent blonde defied the odds, building a successful career as an actress, first down under, and eventually across the bigger pond, here in Hollywood. “It was a weird transition because (acting) is so different from TV presenting, so it definitely took a beat, but deep down, I always wanted to be an actress, so I had to go for it.” Whelan’s never been afraid of letting go and leaping forward - chock it up to the physical confidence that was instilled in her both as the granddaughter of Australian Rules Football Superstar, Marcus Whelan, and as an accomplished athlete in her own right (she trained from a young age to be a dancer) – but whatever the case, it’s a belief that has only steered her on to greater success…

“When I was 25, I got asked to do ‘Neighbors’ in Australia and I jumped at the chance, even though I had never even taken an acting class, “ she says somewhat guiltily, before explaining, “I was so busy working as a presenter from as soon as I finished school literally right through until ‘Neighbours’ that I had never stopped and done a course in anything else!” Fortunately, the fertile ground that is the iconic Aussie Soap (responsible for introducing the world to Kylie Minogue, Russell Crowe, and The Hemsworth Bros.) provided quite July 2014 - BELLO

an education: “It was such a great place to be a part of and to learn so quickly on your feet, blind, and around that cast and crew. Everyone really looked out for me, and I will always be grateful to that show.” Soon however, Hollywood came knocking and Whelan, who’d grown up taking trips to The States, was more than ready to answer. “I’d been asked about a particular project that was happening over here (2009’s ‘Halloween II’, directed by Rob Zombie). It was an opportunity to work with some great actors (Malcolm McDowell, Octavia Spencer) and I knew it would be fun, so I gracefully got out of ‘Neighbours’ and left and moved over here and did that movie.” Before long, she was booking parts on TV shows like Scrubs and Entourage, and even landed a plumb role in The Farrelly Brothers’ 2011 film, ‘Hall Pass’, but it was her starring turn opposite Milo Ventimiglia on the über-intense Crackle series ‘Chosen’ that truly gave the Aussie stunner a chance to exercise her dramatic muscles, and to bond with a cast and crew as close-knit as her ‘Neighbours’ family: “I love Milo Ventimiglia and Ben Katai (the show’s director for seasons 1 and 2) That was such a cool, intense, rewarding process to be a part of… I’m sad my character got killed off, but we had to make room for ‘Matador’.” Ah yes, ‘Matador’… the super sexy spy series - airing on Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network - on which Whelan plays… well perhaps it’s better to hear her describe it - “an undercover CIA agent – real baddass, kickass, very intelligent. She is full on in every way. I mean, I’ve got to get my sh*t together when I play this woman.“ In fact, her enthusiasm for the entire project is undeniable, matched only be her dedication to it. “I was such a huge fan initially when I read the script because it’s so cool and hardcore and sexy and fast-paced. The storylines are incredible and there’s so much going on. The entire cast and crew are so talented and we’ve

Whether acting for famously opaque writer/director, Terrance Malick on the set of his upcoming, Christian BaleNatalie Portman starrer, ‘Knight of Cups’ (“I have no idea what the movie is about or even if I’m gonna make it in, but it was an incredible experience that I will never forget.”), or opposite Nicholas Cage in the big budget adaptation of ‘Left Behind’, the first book in Jerry B. Then came a starring role on The WB’s Summerland, a criminally catchy pop breakthrough (‘Beautiful Soul’), Leona Lewis’s worldwide smash, ‘Bleeding Love’ (which he co-wrote), more roles in films and on television, and of course, more music… Now, McCartney’s one the most in demand actor/singersongwriters in the business, proving not only that a little fire in the belly goes a long way. Also the audiences know the real thing when they see it. “I try to be as honest as I can in my songwriting and my acting. I think people will call BS if they hear or view anything otherwise,” he says with the confidence of a seasoned performer who’s been doing this for most of his life. McCartney knows he’s lucky to have stumbled upon his calling in life so quickly and more importantly that it helps him celebrate another passion of his… “I absolutely love the female race. I love everything about them and what they do to us as males… I’ve been in really fiery relationships; I’ve been in colder ones. I’ve been single. It just makes for tons of songwriting, these new experiences. I think everyone feels it; it’s just my job to let it out so they can relate to it.” And by the sound of his unabashedly sexy upcoming LP, the 70’s funk and popinfused, In Technicolor, it’s clear he takes that job seriously: “It’s so funny, when you grow up, the music that you listen to as a child definitely leaves an imprint on your life in one way or another. And for me, those people were Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Prince. So I sort of wanted to make a record that was a reflection of what I grew up listening to and how incredibly this music made me feel.”

It’s a direction that the ‘Leaving’ singer has been heading in since the summer of 2013, when he collaborated on a song with pop-rock group, Hot Chelle Rae, for their record, but soon found himself desiring the instantly addictive jam. “I thought, this feels like it might be the template for what I wanted to do with my album. So I asked the guys and at first they were a little hesitant, but after hearing how much of the song was actually soul oriented, they said yeah, this should totally be your record!” The record was called ‘Back Together’, a confident slice of retro pop that would be the first single off of his well-received EP - released at the end of last year as a sort of teaser for this current project: “In Technicolor is the album that I feel like I was born to make,” McCartney says with characteristic passion. “I was happy that the response was so positive (to last year’s EP), but no matter what, I had to let these songs out.” 91
Like the album’s first single, ‘Superbad’, which finds the ultra-cool crooner singing the praises of his lady love as only he can… “’Superbad’ is definitely a good reflection of the album in its entirety. It’s funny, I think once you kind of study up and read about the lingo that was used back in the 70’s, like ‘Superbad’, it just sounds cooler when you put it with contemporary music and melodies. It kind of has that throwback feel.” As does the song’s steamy video, shot in Los Angeles and perfectly capturing McCartney’s easy breezy vibe. In fact, the two seem so in sync that it’s easy to forget he’s actually a proud New Yorker. “I moved out here when I was 16, so all of my adult life has been out here… LA swallowed me up, but I definitely feel tons of roots and ties to New York, and not just in music, but also in food, art, and architecture. I love it there and miss it very much.”
Spoken like a true renaissance man… Accordingly, even though this year is all about the music -“fans can definitely expect a tour this summer”the versatile actor and surprising voice over star of Alvin & The Chipmunks, Justice League, and a slew of other iconic cartoons - “That was kind of a happy accident, but I did grow up idolizing (legendary Loony Tunes vocal master), Mel Blanc” - hasn’t given up on his other pursuits. “I love film and television. But if I’m on set, I’m fully on set, 100%. If I take a role, that’s all I’m doing… Same with my music… I can’t be distracted; I have to give all of myself to one project at a time.” And who are we to argue with such a clearly successful strategy?

lthough, they were in separate seasons, it wasn’t until Season 7 of SYTYCD ALL STARS is when Allison and Stephen crossed paths and a love connection started to form for the illustrious couple. “The first time I ever saw him, I looked at him and I knew there was really something special about him. He looked at me and my heart melted and we shared a dance and literally danced for three hours straight. We didn’t even have to speak to each other; I just knew we understood each other. It was the best dance I’ve ever had in my entire life,” beams Holker while tWitch goes even further to say, “When we shared that dance together at the wrap party, she literally stole my heart. From then on, we danced, went on dates, laughed together, shared stories and entertained some of the most ridiculous conversations. Then I went on to meet her daughter and it just felt right. Everything gelled and (pauses and sighs) yeah, the best decision ever.” When asked about making the adjustment from small town life (Orem [Utah] for Holker and Montgomery [Alabama] for Boss) to the City of Angels, the couple each has their own views and similarities. Small town living has certainly blessed this humble couple who both come from family-oriented backgrounds. “My favorite thing about Orem is that it is an extremely safe environment and I grew up knowing my neighbors, having school friends I used to run around the parks with and very family-oriented. The dance world out there [in Utah] is absolutely phenomenal so I feel very fortunate,” reflects Holker. When the same question was posed to Boss, his easy going, Southern demeanor surfaces, “There’s nothing like southern hospitality. The food, the people, saying hello to random people on the street or in an elevator. The summers were ridiculously hot, the food was high in cholesterol and the people 103
were friendly. It’s that community feel and not being afraid to say hello to random people or striking up a casual conversation.” As far as dance influences and who has inspired them to become who they are, for Holker, the biggest influence came from watching her sister, Jessica. “I saw her dance and I knew from that moment on that I was going to change people’s lives like how she changed mine at that moment.” Holker even goes on to list famed choreographer Mia Michaels, the quirky and passionate Cyd Charisse and the multi-talented, Jennifer Lopez as inspirational figures. Mainly a street dancer, tWitch’s dance career really didn’t start until later in life. Some of his earlier dance influences range from watching SOUL TRAIN lines to artists and dancers like Gene Kelly, Michael and Janet Jackson and all dancers who were background dancers. “I think somebody that really influenced me a lot and the first time I saw them dance on television would have to be Wade Robson. I saw him dance at the 1999 MTV Music Awards and I just remember seeing how hard he danced and the way he executed his movements. You could feel his power from the screen. I remember thinking how I want to be a powerhouse like that.” When the question posed to both of them on what would you say to anyone who wants to pursue a career in dance, their answers were pretty much synonymous. “Your biggest job as a dancer or anyone in this industry is to do your research. You have to find out what makes YOU unique and what makes you stand out,” stresses Holker. For tWitch, it’s working hard and constantly still moving towards your goals and staying on the right path. “You’re supposed to entertain people and make people smile and enjoy themselves. If you’re not entertaining yourself and you’re
not happy, no one’s going to be happy watching you.” When the topic of style and leisurewear was mentioned, Holker’s choice is a simple sundress and five-inch heels. She also mentions designers G Star Jeans, Michael Kors, Peggy Hartanto and Valentino. As for tWitch, the sophisticated look of Ted Baker, Adidas sweatpants and Jordans. The latter, so much, that he bought their daughter a pair of Jordan’s four times too big for her in the hopes that his love of Jordan’s would rub off on her. As far as future goals and upcoming projects, Holker can be seen in the VH1 hit series HIT THE FLOOR which is headed into its second season. Holker promises that every single episode in this season is going to be jaw-dropping, dramatic and hilarious as well as to expect the unexpected. tWitch will be reprising his role in the fifth installment of the STEP UP franchise coming out August 8th. A lot of characters from the previous films will be coming back and he promises that this will be the “biggest, best and ridiculously danced” STEP UP yet. In addition to their oncamera work, they will be doing more behind-the-scenes work for SYTYCD as guest choreographers and tWitch will be guest judging for this season. “It feels like I’m coming back home,” says tWitch on his return as a guest judge. “It’s where I got my start and I’m able to come back in a different light. I get to have a hand in shaping the new season so it’s nice to be there to lend my knowledge and speak from a street dance perspective.” They are also creative directors of a website called DANCE DIRECT, a one stop shop for the latest in street dance wear or any kind of dance wear for that matter. For this dynamic duo, tWitch sums up their lives the best, “Dreams can happen. There’s plenty of room for people to live out their wildest dreams, but you really have to have the perseverance to do it.” July 2014 - BELLO

BY JOHN HARRIS WALKER I WAS ABOUT TO GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE IN 1974 AND I WAS THINKING ABOUT MY FUTURE. I FELT I WASN’T READY TO GO TO GRAD SCHOOL YET AND I WANTED A BREAK FROM STUDYING SO I DECIDED TO JOIN THE PEACE CORPS. IN COLLEGE, I HAD STUDIED SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE (I MAJORED IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES) AND SO I ASKED TO GO TO A COUNTRY WHERE THEY SPOKE EITHER SPANISH OR PORTUGUESE; THEY SENT ME TO BRAZIL.
It was easy for me to adapt to Brazil: the climate is warm and I hated the cold weather in New England; I love soccer and Brazil is famous for its soccer; I’m an outgoing person which is perfect for Brazil as Brazilians are very talkative; and of course, I love the Morenas, the Brazilian women are very attractive. Nevertheless, in the beginning I did face some difficulties. I arrived during the Brazilian winter, which was just like the New England summer, and I suffered a bit as it progressively got hotter. Also, it was very difficult to find out what was going on back home: it would take hours to make a phone call to the States and it was very expensive. There was no internet or any other way to keep up with the news. I would go for months without knowing how my baseball team was doing (I’m an avid Red Sox fan).
As I stated before, I majored in languages and I saw an opportunity to teach ESL and Spanish to Brazilians in my wife’s hometown. It’s a small town and being a foreigner I was received very well. Brazilians in general are very friendly and receive foreigners very well. Brazil is a beautiful country with wonderful people but has always had problems with corruption. The politicians are famous for building things in the towns but they usually receive a percentage of the money spent on the construction. Brazil has been cracking down on corruption but it will take a long time to do away with it as the penalty for being caught is very light. During my first 30 years in Brazil I would always hear that Brazil was the country of the future and finally it’s arriving. We still have a lot of poverty but I’ve seen great improvements in the last 8 years. The government is concerned with the well-being of the population, trying to
make sure that all have a decent living. There are projects for building houses for poor people, health care for all and benefits for the elderly and sick. The big problem is that it is a large nation with a large population. Two big events are coming to Brazil this year and in two years; The World Cup and the summer Olympics respectively. They have given a great impulse to the economy and also have made the world more observant of what is going on in Brazil. Foreign countries have criticized Brazil for spending billions of dollars on these events when it still has big problems with poverty and crime. The Brazilians are also complaining because they know that a lot of money is going into the pockets of corrupt people. Like any country Brazil has its problems but I still love the country and I plan to spend the rest of my life here in Brazil.

I have traveled abroad many times and I thought I had Brazil all figured out before I even got there. Boy was I wrong!! I thought I’d walk in to the Rio De Janeiro International Airport would look like a tropical paradise and the customs agents would all look like supermodel Gisele and the cab drivers would all look like Rodrigo Santoro.

But… no. It looked a lot like Newark International Airport in New Jersey, my customs agent was 70 and bald, and my cab driver Roberto looked like Danny DeVito, only darker. I thought Ipanema beach would be a non-stop party full of Sports Illustrated bodies. But, no. Ipanema was calm and serene, full of families who were just enjoying
the Brazilian sun and ocean air. Also, I looked like a nun in my American twopiece next to all those string bikinis! Thin and full-figured women alike are as proud of their bodies as the most confident of super models. So many things were different than I had thought they would be. During my 2 months in Rio I stayed in the favelas, which are slums on the outskirts of the tourist beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, and the posh downtown area. The favela is alive with music, color, and food. Every home and business is painted different color and there is a restaurant on every corner. There are more places to get food in the favela than there are Starbucks in New York City! The personality and charm in each front door and ally way was so intriguing and has a story worth telling. Food is such a huge part of Latin culture. Where there is food, there is music. On every light post there is a loudspeaker blaring music for all the streets to hear. All types of music from hip hop to church music to funky to 114
oldies. There is never a time where it is quiet. Kids were playing futbol barefoot in the streets until the wee hours of the morning, men and women sitting out on their front porches watching the kid’s play, cars and motorcycles zooming by, and açai being eaten by everyone.
The favelas I saw were much different than I’ve seen in movies. Sure, the simple homes are all painted all kinds of bright colors and walking in on a drug deal on the street is bound to happen. But what stood out to me most about the favela, and all of Rio actually, was the hospitality of the people. I was clearly an outsider and everyone knew it. Yet, I became so familiar with the locals walking down the same cobblestone streets on a daily basis that even with a language barrier they all greeted me every morning and afternoon as I passed by. Immediately, I felt at so comfortable and at home even though I was more than 7,000 miles away from my family and friends. My purpose in going to Brazil was to educate women living in the favelas how to do hair and makeup through a nonprofit organization called THE TRADE (supportthetrade.org). Like most developing nations, women are not always afforded the same opportunities

as men which can lead to negative social norms, such as low self-esteem and prostitution. Some of the women I had the privilege of teaching are survivors of domestic violence, abuse, drug trafficking, and extreme poverty. They each have intense testimonies of love, loss, and survival. Their stories touched me in ways I never could have imagined. We went to provide women with a dignified career and a way to better provide for their families. In our time there, we realized our purpose there was far greater than just than to “teach a man to fish.” We were there to give these ladies a confidence they never seen before in themselves. Sure, they all were confident with their voluptuous curves and Shakira curly hair, but they were lacking the selfworth that comes from feeling valued and loved by those closest to them. After class, our students would often invite us to dinner in their homes. We would go and meet their families and we would feast on Brazilian food like there was no tomorrow! Fresh mango juice, beans and rice with chicken, and the
best of all was hot, right out of the oven brigadeiro! There was never a minute were we in someone’s home and we didn’t have a plate of food in front of us. It was like My Big Fat Greek Wedding when the mom says, “You hungry?” and the son-in-law says, “No I already ate,” then the mother responds with, “Ok, I cook for you!” In their homes we were treated like family and it was so welcoming. Living in the favelas, these ladies had so little yet they gave so much. They were so generous and loving to us as their friends. But more importantly they gave to their families. The ladies we taught there had a deep desire to provide the best life they could for their children. We sat with each of them and asked want they wanted out of this training and what they want for their lives. None of them wanted a lot of money, or big house, or a fancy car, or even to have a better education. They all said they want their children to be safe and to grow up to be good people. They didn’t want anything for themselves. Their biggest hope is for

What is the ideal angle to use to look your best? Always play around with different angles. I personally like to be as creative as possible so that my profile has a variety and your followers won’t get bored with the same angle/picture.
How about facial expressions? Facial expressions always depend on what your caption is (ex: if your caption reads “bored at school” don’t smile and look happy in your picture; make a funny expression showing your current mood/feeling). Don’t be afraid to unleash your inner nerd and give your audience expressions so that they can get to know your personality.
Is grooming important? Grooming is kind of important. Everyone is judging your picture, but it’s not always necessary. If your picture is of you rolling out of bed in the morning (which I have dozens!) don’t fix
your hair so that it’s perfectly quaffed (unless you’re Beyoncé and you wake up flawless). No one looks perfect all the time.
Should we do a few sit-ups/crunches before a shirtless photo? Unless you’re posting a picture of you at the gym working on your abs, there is no need workout if you’re posting a shirtless pic at the beach or pool. The more natural, the better.
Is there a preference of natural vs. artificial lighting (or filters)?

As any Brazilian would say, we are beyond thrilled... but there are mixed emotions when it comes to that. Such huge events being used by the Gov’t to exploit their own people takes away some of the excitement. Brazilian media can and has limited what they want to show the world, so what excites me most is the international media getting involved and helping in a way, expose the problems and corruption. Tell us more about your modeling experience and transition to acting?
I would say that when I first moved to Florida, in ‘96, it was much different and definitely a culture shock. Nowadays, since Miami, FL is still a hub between all my traveling from LA - Rio/Sao Paulo, it has gotten much similar and you can hear Portuguese being spoken more frequently.
I was born in Sao Paulo but Rio has had a huge influence in the development of my personality from all the time spent there. I truly feel I was born “in the wrong place” because so much about me I can identify with what Rio represents. Now as far as memories go, I would have to say the time spent with my grandpa. I still feel his presence and serenity around me from time to time.

My modeling experience took a life of its own... It began as something to do part-time while in school and then as I matured and understood the power behind media and the industry, it inspired me to work hard for what I believed and feed the voice I had/have inside of me. Modeling to those who see beyond the product and the pictures can prepare you to act... So many actors get stuck thinking about their words, script, and forget about the moment they are supposed to be living and character they’re portraying. Sure the majority of models can’t comprehend what that means, just as some actors can’t live in the moment, but that’s

what the industry is about. Successful models and actors, on the other hand, understand that they are instruments of art, instruments to carry on the words of the writers, instruments to sell a product, thus not being about them personally. The moment you take yourself, your ego, away from your work, you have arrived. What is your favorite role so far? My favorite role thus far was “Dimas” on the independent film Anima Sola by Roberto Jabor. The depth of the character, the mystery behind the plot, the group of young actors, the dedication to make it happen and last but not least, the plunge into the unknown, definitely made it special to say the least. Roberto Jabor has a great vision and such talent in protecting the story, the vulnerability needed by the actors in such film and putting it all together. What is next for Gui Inacio? I truly feel prepared for anything that comes my way!!!I’ve been blessed to have amazing people, whether it be professionally or personally, cross my path. I’ve tried to learn as much as possible from every single one of them. I see my life as my career and my career as my life, thus an instrument of art and creativity. The voice inside of me which I previously mentioned, keeps telling me to inspire and motivate others regardless of what I do in this life. Film, TV, Theater, Modeling and even Fitness... Which brings me to what I am focusing on right now and soon transitioning into a TV Show format... I’ve been studying fitness all throughout my life and am now coaching all level athletes although the ones I get the most joy from coaching are the ones completely new to it. But most importantly, I am changing people’s lifestyle, developing their self-esteem and guiding them into a new found self. I live for what I believe. I love seeing my guests’ “OMG” faces when they try these bad boys because I think they expect it to be your standard truffle. However, when they bite into one, they get this chewy combination of chocolate and caramel and are just blown away! These are definitely a must-try! –Chef Ronnie Woo
Brazilian Truffles Makes about 25 truffles • One 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk • 3 tablespoons of bittersweet chocolate chips (or white chocolate) • 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 teaspoon of butter, plus more for rubbing • Toppings of choice: Coconut flakes, Cocoa Powder, Sprinkles, Crushed Nuts INSTRUCTIONS: In a large heavy-bottomed pot combined the condensed milk, chocolate, cocoa powder, and butter. Cook over medium-high heat, constantly stirring and scraping the bottom of the pan with a flat edged wooden spoon to prevent burning. Do this until the mixture is extremely thick and shiny. This should take about 15-20 minutes.
