WHEN IT COMES TO NICE GIRLS IN HOLLYWOOD, YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK MUCH FURTHER THAN ASHLEY TISDALE. ALTHOUGH HER BREAKOUT ROLE WAS THAT OF A CONNIVING MEAN GIRL-THESPIAN, SHARPAY EVANS IN 2006’S HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, HER OFF-SCREEN COUNTERPART IS ANYTHING BUT COMPETITIVE AND SNEAKY. SINCE THEN SHE’S GOTTEN ENGAGED, MADE A FEW MOVIES, NOMINATED FOR A DAYTIME EMMY AND HEADLINED A FEW TELEVISION SERIES. NOW THIS STAR IS READY TO PAVE HER OWN WAY IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY SHE CALLS HOME.

BY NOW ALL OF AMERICA HAS ENJOYED ASHLEY

A

FEW

TISDALE’S

EPISODES

OF

BABY--YOUNG

& HUNGRY. NO, NOT A REAL BABY, ANOTHER KIND OF BABY. AN ABC FAMILY SITCOM, STARRING EMILY OSMENT YET PRODUCED BY TISDALE HERSELF. “YOU KNOW, I’VE HAD MY COMPANY FOR FIVE YEARS NOW. I DID A LOT OF DEVELOPING WITH MY PRODUCING PARTNER. BUT THIS IS MY FIRST SCRIPTED SHOW, AND IT’S REALLY EXCITING,” SAYS THE 29-YEAR-OLD

ACTRESS

TURNED

PRODUCER. “IT WAS DEFINITELY LIKE I WAS STILL LEARNING. WHAT’S DIFFERENT

WITH

THE

SCRIPTED

STUFF IS THAT I’VE OBVIOUSLY BEEN AROUND IT SO MUCH, AND I’VE DONE IT MYSELF. SO I GUESS I HAVE REALLY GREAT INSTINCTS WHEN IT COMES TO IT.” GOOD INSTINCTS? TRY

“I’m completely involved behind the scenes. In fact I just walked off set,” she tells me over the phone during our interview. “I’m there every table read, and I’m there every Friday night for their show night. It’s great to get to a place where I now have the confidence in myself as a producer, especially with this project. At first they wanted me for the lead character. Obviously I love ABC Family and I love the company, but I just kind of really wanted to view myself as a producer for this one, and not be the driving force behind it. When they picked up the pilot, it was then that I knew that it wasn’t about me being in it, and they believed in it as much as I did. I was like, “Ugh, oh my God, yes!”

and so it’s challenging for me and I love that about it. It’s a completely different role and I’m so excited for people to see how mature I am in this one. It’s my transition role for sure.” [Laughs] With a budding romance to fiancé musician Christopher French, and more than one series in production, this TV vet somehow finds time to do it all, while keeping the romance alive during their engagement. “My cousin Blair, who’s made a career for himself doing voice-overs, would always teach me, and I always thought it was very fun,” says the New Jersey blonde. “I constantly did Disney animation pilots, and none of them winding on the air till

I feel like the blonde is definitely more fun. When you’re a brunette people look at you a little bit differently.

IMPRESSIVE. THE SHOW BOOSTS AN EXCITING CAST OF ACCOMPLISHED FUNNY PEOPLE IN KYM WHITLEY AND REX LEE, ACCOMPANYING OSMENT’S GABI CHARACTER FROM SCENE TO SCENE. AND DON’T THINK FOR ONE SECOND THAT ASHLEY’S SPITTING OUT IDEAS AND CALLING IT A DAY. FOR THOSE INCLINED TO SEE THINGS THAT WAY, SHE’S HERE TO SET YOU STRAIGHT.

For those yearning to see Ashley in a scene, rather than behind one, you’re covered. Her new TBS comedy series Buzzy’s is slated to hit TV stands in early 2015. The Boston-set series takes place in a barbershop full of offkilter characters. I know what you’re thinking, more comedy eh? But why change the pace when everything you’ve done in your career up to this point seems to suggest that comedy is your knack - whether that’s reciting the jokes or overseeing them. Ashley Tisdale loves the world of sitcom and America loves her in it. “I just feel like this new show, it’s such a great challenge, because it’s so different. I’m obviously more over the top comedy, and this is more natural,

Phineas and Ferb came along. Now to have that knowledge of how long the show’s been going is crazy yet so fulfilling to think about.” So how exactly does it feel to be nominated for an Emmy when your millions of fans praise your work on the daily already? Nothing like a simple “I loved you in that show!” apparently. “I definitely didn’t see that coming,” she assures me. Citing an Emmy as a “her main goal in life,” news of her nomination came as a shocker. “When I was younger, I had a list of everything I wanted to do, and my mother thought I would never hit voice-work. And now I get to see the extent of what it’s come to be.” August 2014 - BELLO

How does she manage to accomplish so much, yet look camera ready time after time again? Maybe it’s those good instincts again. But even if you’re Ashley Tisdale, all it takes is the right essential pieces, and a good game of pairing, mixing and matching. “I feel like a good distressed jean is something that’s essential. I have this pair from Bebe, and they’re actually my favorite right now. You can dress them up, and you can dress them with flats. I’m into so much, and so many things fashion wise. I love Valentino to more inexpensive things. I can just also find a vintage place, and find a really cool t-shirt and you know, dress that up with something. I think it’s about how you pair different clothes together.” It should be noted that a good hair color can be just as essential as that right pair of jeans, Tisdale who’s had her fair share of different colors and dos, shares with us her philosophy when changing teams. But even better--she’s equipped to tell us if blondes really do have more fun. “I feel great in any color that I am. But there is something about brunette hair that does make my personality feel a little bit darker? [Laughs]. I’ll be brunette for a while, and I’ll be in this kind of dark period and I’ll be like, what is going on! I’m so serious! Naturally I have so much energy and I’m really bubbly as a person, that when I’m brunette, I’m like, what’s wrong with me! And then when I’m blonde, I’m like ugh, I feel myself again [Laughs]. I feel like the blonde is definitely more fun. When you’re a brunette people look at you a little bit differently. I feel like as a brunette they kind of take me more seriously, and so you put on this vibe that’s much more serious than before.” Her last words are about love. “The wedding is a lot of planning, and I love it. My fiancé and I are very natural with each other, so this entire process has been amazing. ”

WE MAY SHARE THE SAME LANGUAGE AND MUCH OF THE SAME DNA, BUT THERE’S MORE THAT SEPARATES US FROM OUR BRITISH COUSINS THAN SIMPLY AN OCEAN AND AN ACCENT. WANT PROOF? JUST ASK ANY ACTOR WHO ATTEMPTED TO MAKE THIS LEAP SEEM CREDIBLE ONSCREEN; AFTER ALL, FOR EVERY RENÉE ZELLWEGER OR HUGH LAURIE, THERE’S A MILLION KEVIN

COSTNER’S

AND

GERARD

BUTLER’S... “IT’S A TRICKY THING, BECAUSE IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT AN ACCENT”, EXPLAINS WELSH-BORN LEADING MAN, TOM ELLIS, “IT’S ABOUT ATTITUDE; IT’S ABOUT HOW YOU ARTICULATE, HOW YOU GESTICULATE, HOW YOU COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER PEOPLE.”

The dashing 6’3 thespian might not seem like the optimal candidate to assess the differences, having spent the majority of his almost 15 years as a working actor on the other side of the pond, starring on über-popular TV series such as ‘EastEnders’, ‘The Catherine Tate Show’, and ‘Miranda’, and popping up in prestige pics like 2004’s ‘Vera Drake’. But when American writer/ director Jonathan Levine (‘50/50’, ‘Warm Bodies’) cast him as a Beverly Hills-based surgeon with a penchant for fast cars and even faster women on the addictive new USA summer series, ‘Rush’, Mr. Ellis found himself instantly immersed in the cultural distinctions.

this sort of American Gigolo-esq lifestyle, living in the penthouse of the best hotel in Beverly Hills and driving around in (his vintage Mercedes), it is quite fun, I must admit.”

Fortunately, having just come off a successful, career-changing stint in London’s West End, playing another American, (Curtis, in Nicky Silver’s ‘The Lyons’), this wasn’t exactly uncharted territory for the actor. Ellis recalls, “(The Lyons) was the first time that I’d done something American where I really came to an understanding of the difference between being American and (being) British, and I kind of felt very much in the zone after having done it so it didn’t feel like such a big leap when the script for ‘Rush’ came in.”

Besides its status as a melting pot of race and socioeconomic status, Ellis thinks there’s something else about glittering; perfection- obsessed Los Angeles that makes the city the perfect location for the show. Of course to hear him describe it is to be schooled in UKstyle understatement: “The scope for particular medical emergencies here is quite broad in fact...” Yet it’s effortless charm like this that has made him a superstar in his own country and seems destined to do the same for him in the states; something Mr. Ellis isn’t quite sure he’s ready for. “There’s a double-edged sword to being in a really successful show in that that’s what people start to know you for, and coming to America has been nice for me because it’s almost like a blank canvas – I can walk into a room and not have anyone expect anything from me and then be able to surprise them.”

“I also spent a lot of time with Jonathan,” he says referring to Levine, a filmmaker known around Hollywood for his outsized talent and personality. “So I think just by osmosis, things started to happen within the character and certain little phrases that came out were (ones) that Jonathan (would) use… I think indirectly it became a character modeled on him.” But one certainly a lot more exaggerated… much to Ellis’s delight: “The idea that (Dr. Rush) has 21

And did we mention that the good doc also makes house-calls?.. The actor elaborates: “This clientele that Rush deals with are people with money, and that doesn’t necessarily mean only people in the Hollywood Hills or Beverly Hills”, he says quite enthusiastically. “It’s anyone who’s got money; Rush’ll go and treat them wherever, so we’re dealing with the high end of LA and the underbelly as well.”

Well Tom, something tells us expectations or not, you’ll be surprising them for many years to come! August 2014 - BELLO

MANISH DAYAL IS HAVING A MOMENT. AND SINCE THIS IS OUR ANNUAL SEXY ISSUE, IT’S A SEXY MOMENT. ONE INVOLVES MAKING AN OMELETTE WITH HELEN MIRREN IN THIS MONTH’S, THE

HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY. THE FILM ADAPTATION OF THE BESTSELLER IS ABOUT AN INDIAN FAMILY THAT OPENS A RESTAURANT ACROSS FROM A RENOWNED BISTRO IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE. THE CROSS-CULTURAL CULINARY TALE, DIRECTED BY LASSE HALLSTRÖM (CHOCOLAT), PROMISES A BREAKOUT ROLE FOR MANISH (HE’S

ALREADY BEEN LABELED AS ONE OF THE FRESH-FACED HEARTTHROBS OF SUMMER). NATURALLY, WE HAD TO FIND OUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE FOR THIS SOUTH CAROLINA NATIVE TO BE HANDPICKED BY A COUPLE OF HOLLYWOOD HEAVY HITTERS...AND HOW HE MANAGED TO MIX FINE CUISINE WITH CROSSFIT.

When Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg are attached as producers of a film you’re in, what goes through your mind? When Steven Spielberg and Oprah hired me, the first thing that went through my mind was, this has gotta be a mistake. Then reality kicked in, and I was just ready to get started and dive in. You don’t always get the opportunity to work with visionaries, let alone your childhood hero, so the pressure was on to contribute to this movie in the best way. I wanted to deliver the goods, bring authenticity to this story, and make them proud for believing in me and this film. Thematically though, The HundredFoot Journey has a specific point of view, and its clear to me why both Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey were drawn to this story. It is about a very unique young man who has a real thirst to understand life and his higher purpose. It is a coming of age story that goes beyond racial and cultural limitations, and I think it will inspire people to welcome life’s uncertainty and destiny...Journey stands for the things we go through in life - in order to achieve greatness or the extraordinary, we have to go a certain distance and risk something to achieve it. How does a South Carolina boy (like you) find himself acting opposite an Oscar winner? I’m asking myself the same question. I was the kid who always believed in the most improbable scenario. It’s tough to fully understand my own journey because I think I’m still in the middle of it, but I can speak to how it started. I grew up in a small town in South Carolina. It was an unusual place to grow up, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for different one because it kept me hungry. Opportunities were limited there, and I 29

ended up renting movies at Blockbuster Video every other day. I wanted to learn more, and film pumped my imagination. I didn’t know how to break into this business though. There were some pivotal people early on, like my mother, who encouraged me to take film classes. I wanted to work behind the camera maybe as a director/producer, which I still want to do one day. While I was studying, I got an opportunity to be in front of the camera, and it was an awesome experience because even though I didn’t know what I was doing, I had fun, and I instinctually understood it. After that, I was hooked.

Hundred-Foot started with a voiceover audition for a DreamWorks animation project. I met with DreamWorks’ casting director, Leslee Feldman, and then the same night I got a call asking me to read for another DreamWorks project. I was not given the name of the film, the story, or any character details; I did a few scenes from a film that had already been made as a sample. I didn’t know what I was auditioning for, but knew it was important. A few days later I got another call to say Steven Spielberg watched my tape and was excited about it – That was the “holy shit” moment. Over the next four months, I was called back into DreamWorks for more meetings. Eventually I learned I was up for the film...I’m told my tapes then went to Oprah Winfrey and Juliet Blake. I met [the director] Lasse Hallström over lunch in New York, and the next day I got a call saying, “Steven Spielberg wants to hire you.” Then a couple months later I’m splitting a ham sandwich with Helen Mirren in France. It is some crazy stuff. How many mouthwatering moments did you experience on set? (We get hungry every time we watch the trailer)

Too many to count, but in the opening night scene of the Maison Mumbai, there were a hundred different Indian dishes to feast on. In Paris, when my character reaches the height of his success as the chef de cuisine of a top Parisian restaurant, we are taken on a different ride with the food. This restaurant serves molecular cuisine and it’s very different than what you see in the early part of the film – we cooked with liquid nitrogen and centrifuges. There are four main kitchens in the movie, and their food ultimately connects the elements of film. Besides a full stomach, what did you take away from your experience shooting in France? The French language. I thought I was good before, but once I got to France, I was able work on it and get around the city. And just how did you manage to keep your body in check while surrounded by all that food? Any calorie-burning tips? The food was out of control in France and on set. I ran almost every day before or after the shoot. I also did a lot of body weight strength training. I had to get creative working out with no equipment. I needed to drop some weight for the India portion of the shoot so I did some Crossfit workouts leading up to it. Finish this sentence: A man who knows his way around a kitchen....? ...better know how to use it wisely. Stan Lee said it best: with great power, comes great responsibility. What or who do you consider “sexy”? Aside from frying eggs in slow motion with Helen Mirren, I’d say frying eggs in slow motion with my girl. August 2014 - BELLO

The Sky’s The Limit:

Starring Sergio

Harford

WORDS BY JEROD WILLIAMS PHOTOS BY JAMIE LUCA WHILE WATCHING YOUR FAVORITE TELEVISION SHOW OR CRUISING AROUND THE METROPOLITAN LOOKING AT BILLBOARD SIGNAGE, YOU MAY HAVE CAUGHT A GLIMPSE OF SERGIO HARFORD’S SUAVE MUG IN SEVERAL TELEVISION COMMERCIALS SUCH AS NISSAN OR TIDE AND ON VARIOUS EYE-POPPING PRINT ADS SUCH AS TARGET AND SONY. THIS RELATIVE NEWCOMER TO THE ACTING WORLD HAD HIS FIRST APPEARANCE ON CBS’ WITHOUT A TRACE BACK IN 2006 AND NOW HE’S MAKING HIS RETURN TO THE SAME NETWORK WHERE HE MADE HIS FIRST ACTING DEBUT IN THE NEW SERIES EXTANT STARRING HALLE BERRY. BELLO MAG SAT DOWN WITH HARFORD TO GET TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THIS RISING STAR AND WHAT IT’S LIKE WORKING ON THE SET OF THE CBS SERIES PRODUCED BY THE LEGENDARY STEVEN SPIELBERG. Tell us where you were born? I was born on the beautiful island of Bermuda and raised in Columbia, South Carolina which made for a very interesting upbringing. You had done quite a bit of theatre growing up. Theatre or film: Which genre do you find where you are your most comfortable? I did a lot of theatre both musicals and plays in my youth. I would have to say right now that film and television has my heart and is my focus, but I would love to revisit the stage again soon. You’ve also done commercials and print campaigns. Did you have any favorite ones? I look at print and commercial advertising as an art within itself and having done many campaigns to name a few favorites would be like choosing which child is your favorite as I’ve enjoyed and learned from them all. You’re making your television debut on the new CBS series EXTANT opposite Halle Berry and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Can you tell us a little bit about this show, what should the audience expect and what character you play? I play Marcus, Molly’s (played by Halle Berry) first true love. The show is nothing short of a Spielberg mystery, edgeSEXY issue - BELLOmag.com

of-your-seat, science fiction thriller with elements of family, government and the unknown. The audience should expect to be on a thrill ride the entire summer so buckle up and prepare for take-off. What was it like working on the set of this show? It’s like being part of a family that is a well-oiled machine. Not to mention everyone was very supportive and warm which coming from icons, legends and veterans of movies and television in this business, it’s very refreshing. I love my EXTANT family.

What are some of the values that you put out in the universe that mold and shape who you are today as an individual? I value on being open, honest and transparent. I value on being authentically unique and owning my individuality and pride on living life to its fullest with faith, purpose, persistence and determination in anything I do. What advice do you have to give for those who are pursing the career path you have chosen? This profession is not for the faint of heart and you have to truly love the art

of acting and embrace the business side that comes with it. What hobbies do you have that you would like to share with us? I hike for enjoyment and do fitness two to three times a week at Runyon Canyon. (L.A. peeps know what’s up!) I’m also a big movie and television head so I love getting together with friends and watching our favorite shows along with commentary from the couch. So what’s next on the horizon from Sergio Harford? Where will we see you next and what other future projects you have in the works? I’m excited to see how EXTANT is received and how it plays out. In the meantime, I’m currently developing a short film and pilot with my writing partner. I’m ready for everything. The universe is the limit. 35

IT’S A MEATY LEAD ROLE FOR RODRIGUEZ, WHO WAS BORN IN PUERTO RICO, RAISED IN NEW YORK CITY, AND WENT TO COLLEGE AT BOTH NYU AND WHEELING JESUIT UNIVERSITY IN WEST VIRGINIA, AND IT COMES RIGHT ON THE HEELS OF HIS PART IN THIS SPRING’S HIGH-OCTANE HIT NEED FOR SPEED. He took a few moments from his schedule to field some questions from us and his answers show that even though his star is taking off, his feet are squarely on the ground. You’ve moved around a lot throughout your life. Where do you call home in your heart? I did move around a lot for high school and college and now for work, but home is, and forever will be, New York City. I still live there and have a lot of my family there too. I am a very proud New Yorker. I read that you appeared on Saturday Night Live. What did you do and what was that experience like? I was a kid and was asked to be an extra on a skit about “The Flying Nun” that got cut and never aired. I remember how amazing it was watching the sets move and how many people were involved. It felt chaotic but smooth at the same time. I was bummed when it got cut and didn’t understand that they shot pieces that wouldn’t air sometimes. My first lesson on ending up on the editing room floor. 39

Was there a role for you, once you got it, that made you think, “O.k. I’ve made it in the business now?” or is that an always moving goalpost? Never had the moment where I said, “I’ve made it” but have definitely had several moments where I say, “I can’t believe this is happening!” Shooting on the pyramids was definitely one of them and also getting to shoot in Petra and other fantastic places around the world and our country. Also working with talented actors and directors like Denzel and Tony Scott has been an absolute privilege. It can be a humbling business and I’ve worked some tough jobs so you won’t find me complaining when I’m on a set. If you could choose to play any role/ character that you wanted, what would it be and why? I loved the movie The Intouchables and Omar Sy’s character would be one that I would love to do. A character that is both funny and has depth. He made me laugh and also broke my heart. What actor/actors that you’ve worked with have you learned the most from? I learn from every set I’m on. Different lessons from different people whether it be actors, directors, writers or the crew. Can’t really say who I’ve learned the most from. I do think the more I’m on set the more I learn...it’s the best classroom. You’re writing a sort of autobiographical screenplay with Rosie Perez as well as having written pieces for some national magazines. What is the

writing process like for you and how does your writing partnership work? The writing process for me specifically for the screenplay has been cathartic for me. It’s a great way to stay creative but has allowed me to work through a lot of issues I had in my life. I’ve been working on the script for several years now and have learned throughout the process to let go and only attach to what is best for the story and characters. This continues to evolve and change and [I] imagine will continue to happen until the moment the film is locked. Rosie guided me in the beginning on how to write a screenplay and we’ve been fortunate to be able to collaborate and not allow our egos to get in the way of what is best for the story. We pitch ideas to each other and some work, some don’t and some inspire other ideas. In the early parts of the process it was difficult for me to let go of some things that actually did happen in my life and I felt the need to hold onto them. I learned that the story develops its own life and I had to learn to honor that allow it to grow on its own. How far along are you with the script? We just did a table read this week with a fantastic group of actors. It was overwhelming and so great to hear these characters come to life by such talented actors. I was most definitely nervous but also excited and learned a lot from the read and am now currently working on a new draft of the script with notes gathered from the read. We are out to some actors that we really want for it. I saw that you’re a musician. Who are your musical “greats”? August 2014 - BELLO

It’s a long list but here are a few: Hector Lavoe, Miles Davis, Frederic Chopin, Fela Kuti, Stevie Wonder. What are a couple of your favorite movies (or have you seen/read anything lately that just really wowed you)?

The Godfather is a classic. Much of Scorsese’s early work is so inspiring. I like a lot of classic films like A Face In The Crowd or foreign films as well. Recently been watching some great documentaries as well. Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tom Ungerer Story. If you could change anything at all with a snap of your finger, what would it be? Greed, Power and Ego. What’s something surprising or unexpected that most people probably don’t know about you? I love arcade games and I’m really good at PAC-MAN. What kind of things can we look forward to from your character on “Gang Related”? The walls will continue to close in on him and the decisions even tougher for Ryan. But I think we can expect to see a growth in him as well where he will continue to make decisions for himself and stand on his own two feet.

HE CAUGHT OUR EYE IN 2012 WHEN HE

JOINED

SINCE

THEN

GENERAL

HOSPITAL,

NATHAN

PARSONS

HAS RAPIDLY BECOME ONE OF THE HOTTEST ACTORS AROUND. WITH A ROLE IN THE MUCH- HYPED SUPER NATURAL DRAMA THE ORIGINALS ALREADY UNDER HIS BELT, HE HAS NOW OPTED FOR A PART IN THE EMMY WINNING HBO SERIES, TRUE BLOOD.

At the moment Nathan is focused on his acting. His latest performance as James, the clever, sexy, empathetic vampire is incredible, particularly bearing in mind that he was drafted in after Luke Grimes left the show. With six series aired alongside an enormous fan base, anyone can imagine the pressure of jumping on board the already established show to be relatively intense. “It was awesome actually!” he says. “There is always pressure when you start a new project, but the cast and crew were amazing in welcoming me into the fold and making me feel at home.” He continues by explaining how he prepped for the renowned role, “I started by watching season six, studying the character James and seeing if there was anything that stood out in terms of habits, speech patterns, etc.” I begin realizing how important getting in tune with the character was to Nathan, “I didn’t want to upset the fans if there was something that stood out but the character didn’t really do too much. Plus, because the direction of the character is shifting it allowed a little more leeway when it came to creative liberties. From there I just tried to gradually shift James from season six to season seven!” Nathan answers the question I was most anticipating, his most challenging role to date. Drawing the answer I speculated, “Probably James actually”,

45

he notes, “his character is from the 70’s, plus he definitely has certain aspects of his character that were a challenge for me to wrap my head around.” With the particularly grueling schedule between two film sets at an end, Nathan finally gets a break. “I am looking forward to the downtime. I should have a few weeks off coming up, so it’s time for a road trip!” Parsons’ role in The Originals allows him to divide time filming between Los Angeles and Atlanta. Having grown up in the South I was eager to find out where his heart lies when it comes to his filming locations. “I actually prefer Atlanta! The people in Georgia remind me of home.” It is no surprise that in his industry, it is important to stay in shape, when I ask him if he has a demanding work out regime, his answer is seemingly relaxed, “I probably should! It is difficult to stay in shape in general but you have to try to squeeze it in whenever, wherever you can. Whenever I was in Atlanta, I would always wake up a couple hours before my call time and head to the hotel gym.” As we draw to a close, I ask for his opinion in what he finds sexy, his answer simple and to the point. “Confidence.” He divulges, “confidence” in yourself that goes deeper than what you do or anything else superficial. It’s that self-respect that I find sexy.” I can’t help admiring the sincerity behind his response.

‘AFFLUENZA’

PARTIES LIKE IT’S 2008 (REVIEW) BY ADRIENNE MCILVAINE

THOUGH THE CAST OF PRETTY YOUNG THINGS LOOKS STRAIGHT OUT OF A CW PILOT AND THE TITLE IS A CONTROVERSIAL NOD TO OVER PRIVILEGED MILLENNIAL APATHY, DON’T BE FOOLED; AFFLUENZA IS AN AFFECTING EXAMINATION OF A FAMILY AND A COUNTRY ON THE BRINK OF DISASTER. LOOSELY BASED ON THE GREAT GATSBY AND SET IN THE SAME TONY LONG ISLAND TOWN THAT INSPIRED FITZGERALD’S CLASSIC TALE OF TRAGIC EXCESS, THE FILM IS POPULATED BY THE SAME KIND OF IGNORANT, WEALTHY ELITE WHO ARE IN FOR A VERY RUDE AWAKENING. It’s the heady summer of 2008, just weeks before the collapse of Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns brings on the worst U.S. financial crisis since the Great Depression. Fisher Miller, portrayed with charismatic intensity by Ben Rosenfield (Boardwalk Empire), has traded sleepy upstate New York for the privileged confines

of Great Neck, N.Y., where his moneyed but miserable family live in a house of cards. His uncle Phil (Steve Guttenberg) hustles on Wall Street, while his aunt Bunny (Samantha Mathis) lounges like a Real Housewife of Long Island and their perpetually pouty teenage daughter Kat (Nicola Peltz) shops like there’s no tomorrow.

54

And for a while there isn’t. Fisher’s exceptional marijuana and photographer’s eye make him fast friends with his cousin’s rich kid friends, including troubled Dylan (Gregg Sulkin) and junior alpha male Todd (Grant Gustin). Kat and her coterie of future CEOs and trophy wives throw white parties, smoke lots of pot, and dance to The Rapture’s “House of Jealous Lovers,” using and abusing one another, because that’s what adults do, right? The kids pretend to be adults, the adults pretend to be kids and everyone pretends not to notice the moment when the uphill climb turns into a downward slide. Director Kevin Asch, a native son of Great Neck, juxtaposes the Fisher’s

implosion with actual news footage of politicians and presidents preaching imminent economic collapse, smartly framing their family dysfunction as a symptom of a much larger problem. While manic Phil and entitled Bunny don’t exactly invite sympathy, it’s hard not to share their sense of bewilderment and anger at just how badly things have gone wrong. Rosenfield, best known for his role as Nucky’s headstrong nephew on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, imbues Fisher with a brooding charisma and intelligence that soars above Peltz’s sad, doe-eyed Kat and a melodramatic third act. Even amid the luxurious topiary gardens and stately mansions (all filmed on location in Great Neck) everyone’s just faking it till they make it.

Affluenza ultimately asks the $64,000 question we still need to answer: just who is it all for? Affluenza is now playing in select theaters.

WORDS BY BRAD LIBERTI

Believe it or not, it’s been almost a decade since Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez dropped their hyper violent, S&M opus, ‘Sin City’, on audiences, singlehandedly reviving Mickey Rourke’s career, upping Jessica Alba’s stripper cred, and making us believe that Elijah Wood was one crazy sick MoFo. Who knows if this sequel will have the same twisted appeal?- but Alba’s back in the saddle, Bruce Willis is back from the dead, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt looks seriously pissed off!... I’m in.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Looking for something to chase away the summer rerun doldrums and ‘Real Housewives Of New Jersey’ simply not cutting it? Try the ladies of this deeply affecting, always understated Showtime drama, now in its second season. Not only does it routinely feature the best acting on television, but with a cast of fabulous females that includes Emmy Nominees, Lizzy Caplan and Allison Janney, alongside new additions, Betsy Brandt, Sarah Silverman, and Kiki Palmer, you’ll find yourself saying Bravo what?

Masters Of Sex

Get On Up

Chadwick Boseman showed the world he was more than capable of stepping into the shoes of a legend when he brought Jackie Robinson to life with grace and grit in last year’s ‘42’. Now he’s playing superhuman soul king, James Brown, in ‘The Help’-director, Tate Taylor’s much-anticipated, all-star biopic, and it looks like the talented actor has nailed it again.

Ariana Grande “Break Free”

With Mariah Carey off posing for selfies or toting her kids around like Joan Crawford at a Christmas photo call, and Christina Aquilera all but MIA, it’s about time that a true singing diva reclaimed the pop throne. Sorry, Riri, Katy, Gaga, this girl can really blow, and when her latest criminally catchy jam (featuring Zedd) comes on the radio, you’ll think you can to- until someone pulls up next to you at the light…

Jonah from Tonga

If you haven’t yet discovered the joy that is Australian actor/comedian, Chris Lilley’s underrated 2007 comedy masterpiece, ‘Summer Heights High’, than stop reading this immediately and go do so... If you have, then you know that while he wasn’t nearly as flashy as Ja’mie, or delightfully delusional as Mr. G, Jonah Takalua, the errant rebel without a cause of the giddy series set at a high school in Sydney’s outer burbs, managed to snag a few surprisingly touching moments amid the general wackiness. Doubters out there might be wondering how Lilley can ring any humor from the story of this troubled South Pacific teen (especially after the less than stellar ‘Angry Boys’ and mean-spirited ‘Ja’mie: Private School Girl’) but I’m keeping the faith.

SWEATER G-STAR RAW JEANS LEVI’S 511 JEANS SHOES MEZLAN SOCKS STANCE

It tends to catch you by surprise and you end up shouting things like “There’s Paulie in a Velveeta commercial!” or “When did Derek shoot an episode of Madmen?” or “Kevin was a monster on Charmed?” It makes you feel good to see someone you know and all their effort and dreams and dedication paying off. It’s always a welcome, little moment of them sort of saying “Hey, look what I can do!” without them actually boasting. One night I was watching ABC’s an episode of Castle and I saw Michael Graziadei. Suddenly there he was onscreen getting interrogated by Nathan Fillion. “Oh my god, that’s Graz!” I yelped out, surprised. I called him up to congratulate him and we ended up talking about the work he was doing himself on his house. Michael and I first met through mutual friends and had surfed together a few times but had never really talked about what he did. I came to learn that he was an actor on the soap opera The Young and the Restless (and how could he not be, with that mug of his?) but since I didn’t watch soaps, I’d never seen his work before. Not long after that I was flipping channels and started watching an episode of American Horror Story and there he was again, playing Jessica Lange’s boyfriend in the first season of the FX hit. I didn’t even realize it was him right away… only that I had some vague familiarity with the character he was playing. That was when I got the ‘Hey…, Graz is a really good actor!’ epiphany. Recently he has appeared on big network shows like NBC’s Grimm and ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but this summer he’s really gotten to showcase his talent on Lifetime Television’s The Lottery, which is shooting in Montreal, Canada. For the purpose of interviewing him for this article, I did a little online digging into his life (I slightly felt like a stalker) and then we reconnected over the phone to catch up and talk about his role on this latest project.

What can you tell me about The Lottery? MG: Oh man, it’s amazing! It’s a show set in a dystopian future where women become infertile and stop having babies. No one knows why --if it’s agents in the environment or because of chemicals that are being released-- and everyone is trying to learn why this is happening because obviously, without babies, the world is in trouble. It’s about looking at the end of our existence. It was created by Timothy J. Sexton who also did the movie Children of Men, which explored some similar territory. It’s amazing how everyone has brought Tim’s words and the world of his screenplay to life. It doesn’t look like t.v. at all. It’s epic, gritty, and feels really big. This really is something I’d want to watch myself, but, you know, I can’t watch myself. (laughs) And what is your character like? MG: I play Kyle Walker. A single father of one of the last 6 naturally born children on the planet. He’s a recovering alcoholic so his parenting skills are scrutinized and called into question. How did you prepare for the role of someone in recovery? MG: I approach any role with an interest in respectfully and honestly portraying the character. I’ve taken friends to [12-step] meetings before, and in this instance that proved to be immensely helpful. I wanted to focus on someone who’s putting his past behind him and forging a new life for himself and his son. How has the shoot been going? MG: This is a new animal for me. The cast is just phenomenal and we’ve had some incredible directors on these episodes. Danny Cannon, and Matt Earl Beesley, who, when I was a guest star on Miami Medical, he directed --and when I saw him I just remembered how much fun he was to shoot for and now it’s great to see how much we’ve both grown-- so it was great to reconnect and work with him again. Another is Tim Hunter, who did the movie River’s 59

Edge, and he just finished yesterday. I’m really fortunate to have such phenomenal directors come through. I just feel super fortunate to be able to work on this project. It’s my favorite script in 5 years. You know, as an actor going out on auditions you’re constantly in a state of reading scripts and there’s a good chance you’ll be working on the one you didn’t want as much as the one you REALLY wanted – but everything aligned on this one and I got the one I really wanted. With the sci-fi aspect of this story, it seems like a different kind of show from what Lifetime normally does. MG: Lifetime is making a show that can compete with all the other amazing shows that are out there on cable right now. It’s a story that appeals to a universal audience like Breaking Bad or Mad Men. Since it’s set in the future, does it have some cool sci-fi technology and gadgets? MG: It’s set in the not-too-distant future so we get to see how certain things with technology have evolved, but we don’t spend too much time on that kind of stuff because we’re more focused on ‘how to we solve this crisis?’ It’s like, who cares about gadgets if humanity isn’t going to survive? How has it been living in Montreal for the shoot? MG: I’ve been immersing myself in the city. I get up every morning and hit the gym at 6am before going to set, and then if there’s time at night I try and find a new restaurant for dinner. It’s a great city. Charming. Picturesque. Cobblestones streets. I grew up in Germany so I’m really appreciating the feel of it. The subway makes it so easy to get from one part of the city to another. Aside from me not speaking French it’s pretty easy. So are you learning any French? MG: I am studying a little and picking up a little French here and there.

I also brought my guitar with me and I’m writing music. Music is a real release for me, whether I’m playing it or going out to see a show and there are tons of festivals here. I think because the winter is so cold here that everyone wants to be outside and enjoying life in summer. There’s a Jazz Festival, a French Music Festival, a Comedy Festival. There’s this Fireworks Festival here in Old Port with all these nations competing, twice a week, with their fireworks accompanied by music that plays on the radio stations, so I go out with an espresso down to the water and watch them. It’s one of my summer goals to see every fireworks show. Have you gotten recognized? MG: Yeah, it’s similar to L.A. where you tend not to get approached unless it’s by a super-fan that really likes your work. In Montreal, I’ll get some looks but it’s very respectful. I did get paparazzi’d the other day. I heard my name screamed out and turned and saw a woman with a huge telephoto lens snapping away. I never realized how big of a role you had on The Young and the Restless. Your character, Daniel Romalotti, was played by seven other actors throughout the years but you are the actor best known in that part. MG: Yeah, when I left the role, they never recast. What caused you to leave the show? MG: It was my first acting job out of college. It was a great place to learn the business and get my feet planted solidly on the ground. Even though I loved the show and everyone I worked with, after 8 years of playing Daniel it was time for me to try something new and stretch different muscles. What did you think about your experience on American Horror Story? MG: I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I didn’t know what the character was going to be like. I didn’t know I was going to be Jessica Lange’s younger boyfriend. Ryan Murphy and Brad Falcheck were given carte blanche August 2014 - BELLO

from FX to do whatever they wanted, so they really ended up with something special. It was a thriller, a horror, it was funny, sometimes heartwarming. It was a great experience and probably the most creative thing I’ve ever been a part of. It was really one of those moments in my life when it was clear to me “This is why I’m an actor.”

SHIRT CIVILIANAIRE JEANS LEVI’S 511 JEANS JACKET MATCHLESS AT BLOOMINGDALE’S CENTURY CITY SHOES MEZLAN

How was working with Jessica Lange? MG: Working with Jessica was a dream. Her level of professionalism and the way she conducted herself on the set was incredible. She reaffirmed the notion that hard work in your preparation pays off in spades. More than any other actress she taught me the importance of taking risks. So have you gotten to surf at all lately? MG: Awh, man… I’ve been here shooting for months so I haven’t been surfing all summer. Hopefully in the fall, when I get back to L.A., I’ll do a surf camping trip and maybe I’ll finally take that trip to Costa Rica that I’ve been putting off.

The Lottery’s first season has 10 episodes and is currently airing on Lifetime on Sundays at 10/9c

ABOUT HIS FORMATIVE YEARS ON THE SHOW THAT SOURED HIM TO STARDOM, HIS NEW ACTION THRILLERS AND LEAVING OLD HABITS, LIKE JUNK FOOD BEHIND.

Talk to me about Into The Storm? Into the storm is a first person documentary-style action thriller. It documents the story of this town that’s essentially destroyed by series of really violent tornadoes, bigger than anything in human history. It’s three converging stories and it’s about these three individuals and how they converge together. The storm occurs during a very special moment and everyone caught in the eye of it has to deal with the aftermath. It’s a super intense, really fast paced action movie. It’s nice because even though it’s a found footage type deal, it’s show from multiple perspectives by these storm chasers that have been recording the whole time. We have about eight or nine different perspectives going on during the film. Considering the title of the film. Is it safe to say you’re wet for the majority of it? You have no idea. There’s a little bit of a calm before the storm, but once 63

it happens there was not a single day where I didn’t go home just completely head to toe soaked and yet. Rain is also one of the things that are hard to fake digitally, and so they made it a point to try and get as many practical, real, in person effect as possible and not just rely on CGI. In addition to the water they also had these guys with giant bags of debris that they would blow into these phenomenally fast fans. It turns out, pretty much anything when thrown at you in 100-mile wind like that, hurts really bad [laughs]. What’s funny is that there’s very little acting when it comes to the dramatic moments. We were actually trying to get from point A to point B without dying. So the fear that you’ll see in our eyes is completely genuine.

years after I caught the bug again. It’s nice, being a local awarded me with a lot of great opportunities that I wouldn’t have had had I lived outside of the state for example. Because I lived here I didn’t have any sort of jaded reality of what LA was. So it saved me from the disappointing of thinking I was living in a place that was glitz and glamour all the time. When you think back on your time on iCarly, what comes to mind? I think just the memories that I have of becoming friends with the cast. We started when we were 13, 14 and ended at ages 19, and 20. We were literally growing up together. We were spending our most formative years together. 10

When I was younger I began talking really early. I was really good at memorizing the lines of whatever was on the television. As an actor, what was it like being born and raised in LA? It was very interesting. I feel like I’m one of the few people that was born and raised here in LA. Most of the young actors come from the Midwest of the East Coast. Living here gave me the chance to get a jumpstart on it. When I was younger I began talking really early. I was really good at memorizing the lines of whatever was on the television. Whether that was Mr. Rogers or Barney, then I’d go and recite them to my parents. It was then that they thought the industry would be something I could potentially enjoy. Long story short, I attended a cattle call and was signed by an agent I met there. I auditioned and did the whole thing for a couple of years. It was around the age of six when I was I was cut during a casting, and it was then that I really understood the casting process. Up until then I thought the audition was as much fun as I could have. I took a break and didn’t think much of it, then a few

hours a day, every day, just hanging out. They’re one of the best friends I’ll ever have. It was different on our show. On our last day we cried like nobody’s business. It wasn’t like any of the horror stories people are told. Seems like you like to work a lot. Would you consider yourself health conscious? I have been much more than I was. I had a period between the second and third season of iCarly where I wasn’t where I wanted to be physically. I was kind of embarrassed to wear certain kinds of clothes. Or I would wear a bigger size so I wouldn’t have to worry about what part of my body the shirt was hugging or something. I realized it was about the time when boys started working out and taking care of themselves. Ladies were becoming more of a thing, and so I had all the typical 16-year-old motivations to do it. I hired a personal trainer and I did bulk up a bit. However, the one thing I had never really gotten a handle of was my diet. A 16-year-old August 2014 - BELLO

boy has no self-control when it comes to what he put in his body. It didn’t really hit me until I completed filming on Into The Storm. It was a rough experience for me because I was on-location, out of state, completely under my own control, without a parent limiting my amount of junk food and horrible but delicious stuff. I gained a lot of weight on that set, and it shows on screen. Since then things have fallen a little bit more into place, and I’m finally comfortable. That’s what it was about for me. It wasn’t about looking awesome at the beach. I just wanted to not feel embarrassed when I wore something that was a little bit tight. I didn’t have these crazy fitness aspirations. It was about feeling healthy, being healthy, and looking healthy. Everything that comes along with it was just kind of like a nice perk. You posted a photo of a WiiU the other day on instagram. Are you a gamer? It’s definitely one of my hobbies that I thought It’d grow out of, but it has not happened. It’s my unwinding activity of choice. When I was working on iCarly, I’d come home and just play a few rounds of something online and just decompress. That was my way of being a teenager. Eventually I really hope by the time I have kids I’ll manage to get out from under the pressure of how good games are getting. But it’s not looking good. One of the ways I’m justifying it is, when I got the Xbox 1 I discovered a fitness program that is built in. There’s a bunch of really cool fitness programs that whenever I’m too lazy to get in the car and drive the 15 minutes to the gym, I can do a 30 minute workout that would get me just as pumped up and sweaty as a three hour workout at the gym would. Tell me one thing about you that you’re fans would be surprised to know? I’m so open when it comes to my fans that I don’t think there’s much that they aren’t incredibly aware of [laughs].

5 Things w/ Faking It’s

Michael J. Willett BY DIO ANTHONY

67

August 2014 - BELLO

MICHAEL J. WILLETT IS SLOWLY BUT SURELY MAKING A NAME FOR HIM, WHILE REPRESENTING GAY TEENS TO THEIR UPMOST AUTHENTICITY. WITH PROJECTS LIKE THE MUCH BUZZED ABOUT G.B.F. MOVIE, AND HIS NEW MTV SHOW FAKING IT, WILLETT IS SETTING HIS PLACE AT THE TABLE FOR YOUNG PIONEERS.

On paper the script must’ve read really bizarre. What were your first thoughts when first reading it? When I first read it, I was really captivated by the character that I would be playing [Shane], and I just thought he was a really progressive character. Something that hadn’t been seen before, like the Ferris Bueller of the gay community. In regards to the secret, I think it may seem like just a smart concept. But when you really see it, it has so much heart and ethical backbone. That it doesn’t really matter what subject we’re addressing. How different from the show was your high school experience? I grew up in Fresno, California, so it was a little progressive than most schools I don’t think it was ever, like, having Lesbians as homecoming queens, at least not when I was going there. But I relate to the fact that he can go from clique to clique, because that’s sort of how I was. I talked to everyone, and had lots of friends of different backgrounds and stories.

How has the feedback been about your character and the show overall? Mostly well. People seem pretty addicted to it. Every episode ends with a cliffhanger and the fans seem to be invested in the characters and their storylines. The only people have that have complained are the people who haven’t seen it yet. Wish list for season two? It seems like a lot of people are interested in seeing some more love interest for Shane. So you might be seeing more of that. I’d like to see some vulnerability with him. I think he walks with a lot of bravado and confidence and he’s able to stay afloat in almost any situation, so it would be cool to see him crack. You tweeted something about CatFish not long ago. Are you addicted as well? I think it’s such a good show. That’s what MTV does well. I think it’s important to tell the truth and expose to the truth to society, because that’s how they make their decisions. I’ve heard that the birth rate has gone down since shows 16 & Pregnant. Shows like Catfish are doing a good job at showing the realities of our modern society.

“READY STEADY GO!” BRINGS THE PAST TO THE PRESENT, AND MAKES THE OLD NEW AGAIN. WITH A COLLECTION OF OUTSTANDING VINTAGE-LIKE MELODIES, COUPLED WITH INSTRUMENTS HARDLY EVER HEARD ON MAINSTREAM MUSIC TODAY AND ONE VERY SPECIAL COLLABORATION, GO IS DRAKE WE’VE BEEN WAITING TO SEE, WE JUST DIDN’T KNOW IT.

We sit outside, on the 2nd floor balcony of a West Hollywood apartment building, just seconds away from the world famous sunset boulevard, the same street home to the Drake & Josh set just a little over 5 years into the past, and the one-time Nickelodeon megastar talks deeply with me about his 3rd and most personal album to date. Your fans are really excited over this new album. Talk to me a little bit about the story behind it? “Ready Steady Go!” is totally influenced by the music I grew up on. 50s Rock & Roll, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and that kind of stuff. I got into Rockabilly and the Stray Cats when I was around maybe 10 or 11 years old. I fell in love with Brian Setzer’s guitar playing and his style. I actually got to work with him on this album. He’s been my guitar hero my whole life so to actually be working with him on this record is like a dream come true kind of thing. How’d that happen? Just being a fan throughout these years. Kind of being fanatical and going to all the shows, then becoming friends with him and presenting him with this idea, thinking he wouldn’t think much of it. But I think that he was intrigued that I was going in this route with my music considering my background. He saw that I didn’t care what was on the radio, and what was going on. I’ve wanted to make this record since I was little boy. He was like; you want to make a rockabilly record? You don’t want to make a pop record? I’m like, Brian, you’ve seen my 300 times, and I mean this is my music, this is my shit. So he agreed to work on it and my jaw hit the floor. It’s stripped 71

down, wrapped up, Rock & Roll, right in your face kind of record. This album seems to be a straight direct product of all your influences. Why now? I mean I wear my influences on my sleeve, literally (motioning to the various musical related tattoos crawling up his arm). My first two records were very 60s. A lot of influences from Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys, and a lot of The Beatles. So, a lot of British power-pop from that era. See, when I first started getting into music and getting into playing, it started with all this and wanting to be Elvis. Then it transformed into finding the Stray Cats and Rockabilly music. As I started getting deeper into the guitar, I began developing a love and appreciation for the songwriters of the 60s; John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Bob Dylan. So I started concentrating on writing music more. I started putting some stuff together and those two records have much more production and chord changes and melodies than my recent stuff. With this record I just kind of went back into the time machine a little further. This one’s more 50s driven. So I guess I definitely have worn my influences on the sleeve of my records. But this time I did more covers because I wanted to do what the artist did for me when I would listen to them as a kid. I’d hear “Honey don’t” by The Beatles and my dad would be like, oh that’s a cool Carl Perkins song, and I’d be like, but it’s The Beatles. He’d then go on to tell me that was a cover of the Carl Perkins version. So, The Beatles opened up this whole world of music for me without me even knowing it. I found Arthur Alexander through them and fell in love with the song “Anna” which I thought was a Beatles’ song. That’s what The Beatles and great artists do. For example I put “Crazy little thing Called Love” on my album, and I get these kids coming up to me telling me they love my song “Crazy Little thing Called Love,” and I’m like whoa, I get the opportunity to introduce these kids for the first time to Freddie Mercury, or Queen. So, I encourage them to listen to the originals and bring them into a world of music when all they have is the 12 songs they play on rotation on

Kiss FM. I didn’t win the battle of the radio station when I got in the car with my parents. My dad would tell me what we were listening to, and it was all music from Buddy Holly, Dean Martin. These days most of the kids get in the car and their parents put on what they want to hear just to shut them up. They turn on whatever they want but they’re not being introduced, they’re being deprived of incredible music. It’s really fun to tell them, you have to go listen to the Billy Joel version, and while you’re at it, check out the rest of his music. What’s it like having experienced such vast success internationally? I have a hit record and hit song in Mexico and all of Latin America, so it’s kind of different to go out there and have people chasing the cars, or have swarms of fans everywhere you go. It’s all really exciting; I’ve found that the fans out there are really passionate. When they like something, they really like it. Here we’re jaded. We have the Hollywood Bowl, the Greek Theater, the movie theaters, the amusement parks. We’ve got everything. So when you go and spend a lot of time integrating with the fans, which I do a lot of it’s definitely an experience. I’ll sign every autograph and take as many pictures as they need, no matter how long it takes. When you do that in Latin America they really respond to it. They’re really incredible out there; they’re my favorite fans by far. They just really respond to Rock & Roll out there in general. All the artists that influenced me are gods are there, so when I bring my music out there, it clicks. Traveling to these areas that are just waiting for someone to plug their guitar in, it’s really refreshing. Have you noticed a difference in what clicks in the US compared to other countries where your fan base is large? Yeah, it’s interesting. I think that’s just kind of how you have to do it. There’s a really big rock and rockabilly resurgencetaking place in Latin America right now. Over there the people that come to the shows are dressed up head to toe. You have the girls in dresses with their hair curled, while the guys are all wearing cool leather jackets; they all look like they’re from another time. It’s not just August 2014 - BELLO

the music; it’s the fashion, too. Maybe it starts over there and travels and comes back here. I do feel like other areas are great at discovering things and then showing us what’s cool. Is there any collaboration that you’re particularly excited about? There’s a song called “I won’t stand in your way.” It’s really special to me. When I was a kid I was huge on Vinyl and had this great collection. I still have the record player that I had back then. I would listen to that song over and over again. Now I just released my album on Vinyl, with that song included and Brian Setzer himself plays the song with me. So when I get to go home and play that record on my old record player, 14 years later, coming full circle like that is very surreal. You’re starring in Fairly Odd Sumer on nick this season. How does it feel going into the film, years after the Fairly Odd Parents craze began? It’s pretty rad. I like it, I have several nieces and nephews and for them to be able to come to my concerts can be difficult, because it’s a loud and spontaneous rock show. So, I love being able to do things like The Fairly Odd Parents movies, and Ultimate Spiderman even though my four-yearold nephew is no longer scared of spiders, now he wants to get bit by one. I’m afraid he’ll find some black widow and try and get it to bite him [laughs]. It’s really fun to go record in Nashville with your guitar idol and just get greased out and then fly to Vancouver and then to Hawaii, where I’m told my scene for the day will basically be me surfing. Total bummer right? Also being able to play such an iconic character is amazing. Fairly Odd Parents is like SpongeBob Squarepants where you can be 6 years’ old, or 60 years old watching it. As an adult you’ll watch a scene and wonder, how’d they get away with that joke? It’s kind of like getting to play Bart Simpson a little bit.

23 YEAR-OLD SAMANTHA HOOPES HAILS FROM DOYLESTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA; A CITY MADE HOME BY OTHER NOTABLE PEOPLE SUCH AS FAMED AUTHOR JAMES A. MICHENER, NOBEL PRIZE WINNING AUTHOR, PEARL S. BUCK AND ROCK STAR P!NK. WITH HER TITLE OF BEING THE 2014 SPORTS ILLUSTRATED (“SI”) SWIMSUIT MODEL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AND HER CAMPAIGN WITH GUESS, THIS STATUESQUE BEAUTY (STANDING AT 5’ 9”) IS QUICKLY MAKING HER MARK TO JOIN THE RANKS OF THESE AFOREMENTIONED NAMES FROM THE INFAMOUS BOROUGH OF P.A. AND ALSO PUTTING HER SIGNATURE STAMP AS BEING ONE OF TODAY’S MOST SOUGHT AFTER MODELS IN BOTH PRINT AND RUNWAY.

With a supportive family who gave her ONE year to pursue her goals or she had to come back to Doylestown and get a job, Hoopes hit the ground running with big city dreams and sent her photos off to Elite Model Management. Shortly thereafter, she met her agent and booked a modeling campaign with GUESS all within the short time frame she was given to make something happen. When asked what it was like seeing her moneymaker gracing several magazine covers or being the signature face of any designer’s campaign, she described the experience as being “totally surreal.” “It’s crazy seeing myself life-size on a building or on a billboard on Sunset Boulevard. I never would have thought I would experience anything like that.” When asked if she didn’t have this illustrious career of modeling, what would have been the chosen profession if the stars and the universe didn’t align for her to be blessed with this dream job, she would have wanted to be “a gym teacher and coach a team on the side.” When asked about her life working with Sports Illustrated, she labels her experience being SI’s current model as “so much fun and the girls are all great to work with.” She also elaborates on her experience with her first big campaign GUESS. “The lingerie campaign was shot by my agent Victor del Toro and he knows my angles so well. I recently got the chance to shoot with the iconic Ellen von Unwerth and that was a real

77

honor.” With her current work taking her to exotic destinations such as Mallorca, Spain and various other tropical beaches, Hoopes is definitely sitting back and counting her blessings on being able to work with high-profile, top notch people in the modeling world. Having downtime can be few and far between for any actively working model, so the question was posed to Samantha about her typical day if she wasn’t traveling to exotic places and having to be camera-ready at a moment’s notice. You would find her doing normal girl things such as hanging and socializing with friends, going to the beach and most importantly, working out to keep that killer bod of hers in shape. “I love to box to get aggression out and I also love to hike.” With a burgeoning modeling career and so many projects in the works, her romantic life right now is non-existent. When asked about her ideal guy, this bachelorette describes him as being “very relaxed and easy going” as she’s not at all into the glitz and glamour of what this industry entails, but rather into guys who are more real and down-to-earth as she prides upon loyalty, compassion and modesty. As for the future of this bombshell, expect to see her parlaying her stunning looks and gorgeous genes into the acting world. She’s got a few projects in the works both on the small screen and the big screen that she’s currently working on. Stay tuned. August 2014 - BELLO

Male model maker

Jason Kanner

BY STEVEN CARVER

INEQUALITY RUNS RAMPANT IN THE JOB MARKET WHEN IT COMES TO GENDER. SAME POSITION, DIFFERENT PAY RATES. THERE ARE ONLY TWO PROFESSIONS THAT WOMEN ROUTINELY MAKE MORE MONEY THAN MEN: ONE IS MODELING, WHILE THE OTHER IS IN THE X-RATED SERVICE INDUSTRY.

Dan Murphy

During the 1990’s, female models became a new kind of celebrity. They dated actors and musicians, brought haute style to the entertainment industry that was missing for decades, and even developed into one-name brands (i.e. Cindy Inc.). It wasn’t a job, it was a lifestyle. But while women flourished, men floundered. There were a handful of successful male models and one – Marcus Schenkenberg, with his striking looks, chiseled body and easy going demeanor – broke from the mold, but after the supermodel reign came to an end, models became nondescript. There was a push back from personality and presence as designers wanted the focus to be on the clothes. Models were mediocre and malleable; shells of their former selves. Enter Jason Kanner, model agent. He’s going against the current trend of representing waifish boys and spearheading a model board of aspirational men. As the owner of Soul Artist Management in NYC, he honed his sixth sense at other agencies – Irene Marie, Men/Women, Boss – before developing a revered male roster at Major Models. No longer in the periphery; the guys were back at the forefront. Bello was more than happy to chat with Kanner, to get his thoughts on the industry and what it takes to make it to the top. No need to thank him for his work with Chad White, Cory Bond, Matt Woodhouse and Sebastian Sauve. It’s just a part – and perk – of the job.

What do you look for when scouting for the next top male model?

n Mark Ricketso

Strong features, a beautiful face and an incredible body, but most importantly, versatility – to be able to do editorial, runway advertising and commercial work is key. Do you think the “healthy” (vs. lanky) male model will ever be the norm? Definitely. There has been an emphasis on featuring “real” men in the modeling world lately, as opposed to waif-ish, very young boys. These days, staying in shape is becoming a huge trend and importantly so; there’s more pressure on models to be fit in front of the camera. Challenges with managing male models, opposed to female ones? For the most part, our guys are very disciplined. A lot of them are former athletes, and we don’t have to deal with too much on their part. There’s also much healthier competition among them, as opposed to between girls - it feels more like a team dynamic than a competitive one. Still, boys will be boys and sometimes I do assert some authority when I need to.

Brian Shimansky

What are the issues facing a male model today (i.e. competition, earnings, agencies)? This is a tough industry for anyone to be a part of. There are always bad days and hurdles to overcome. I think the key part of making it through all of that is having love for what you do as a model. As long as your heart and soul is in it, the challenges will only push you harder. Do you find social media helpful or a hindrance to a model’s career? Social media is becoming increasingly important to building your image as a model, to both fans and potential clients. Many of the guys at Soul are online, interacting with their fans and showing their personalities – if it’s done the right way, then it’s helpful. Why do you think the male supermodel

Tyson Beckford 83

never took off (after the first, Marcus Schenkenberg)? There was a shifting focus on celebrity culture for a long time. I think the covers today have gotten flat and uninspiring. The era of the supermodel was beautiful and aspirational, and I definitely see it making a comeback. Do you think the male supermodel can make a return? If yes, then how? There is an interest in the return of the supermodel and putting a model on the cover of a magazine as opposed to the same celebrities. I think the male supermodel will make a return when the right one comes along with that “it” quality. I work with several men that are already at that level, and of course we are working with many of our guys, pushing in that direction – Simon Nessman, Brian Shimansky and Jason Morgan to name a few. CARA SANTANA BY KIMMY ERIN KERTES, FASHION EDITOR

FRESH OFF WHAT COULD BE CALLED A TOUR DE MODE WITH BOYFRIEND, AND FELLOW ACTOR, JESSE METCALF, CARA SANTANA IS MORE IN LOVE WITH FASHION THAN EVER. HITTING FASHION SHOWS IN LONDON AND PARIS, THE FASHION BLOGGER MADE HEAD-TURNING SARTORIAL IMPRESSIONS EVERYWHERE SHE WENT. HERE, SHE SHARES WITH BELLO MAG, JUST HOW AND WHEN HER LOVE AFFAIR BEGAN.

Uniform: Always the same, never varying. That was definitely how it felt as a 5th grader at St. Clements Episcopal Parish School in El Paso, Texas. The Scottish plaid skirts, the crisp white collared shirts, the sea of unvaried middle schoolers’ all unwavered by the lack of individuality they had been given in an effort to simplify life and prioritize education. The hallways looked like an invasion of a tiny tartan tribe. Where was the self-expression? Our creativity? Was this not our formidable years for developing and finding ourselves, I wondered? Why do I look like part of a player in this plaid gang? The oppression was unbearable. Something had to be done! “Ms. Santana! Don’t you think your socks are a bit too high?” I lifted my head. There he was; the Putin to my

SEXY issue - BELLOmag.com

Russia, the Jong-Il to my South Korea. A lovely man really, as an adult, I may have even liked him. But as a 14 year old trying to gain a little individuality, he may as well been the enemy. And his Stalinesque mustache was certainly apropos. “Mr. Waller, there doesn’t say anything in the hand book about knee high socks.” What can I say, Clueless had made an impact on me and Cher’s over-the-knee socks appeared to be the perfect solution to my drowning self-expression. “Inappropriate!” said my dictator de jour. A failure at that moment for sure, but I wouldn’t stop. I would fight for my right to express myself, knee high socks or not. From then on it was a daily act; trying to conceive ways to stand out in a world that required me to blend in. Blue sweater vests, high-heeled penny loafers, boy blue khakis; you name it, I tried it. Some were hits, others inarguable misses. Through this time though, I was able to channel my love for fashion and the creativity this medium brought me. What other way could you illustrate without words exactly what you wanted to say about yourself? I found a direct correlation between who I was and how I dressed; be it the feeling or mood I had on a given day or what I wanted to convey to those around me. It was pure liberation. There’s an old adage that suggests we are judged by first impressions. If that’s true, should we not be aware of what we illicit in the thoughts of

others? Why not make a clear statement about who we are? What better way to do that than by the way you dress? The power of fashion is that it tells a woman’s story without her having to open her mouth. The power in that is undeniable. Ralph Lauren said, “Fashion is something that comes from within you”. I have found that to be true. You create your own style. You say what looks good for you. Trends come, trends go. Trends evolve, as do we as people. The one thing that doesn’t change, other than that uniform, is the need for selfexpression. I learned that young and the impact it had on me has proved to be paramount. Everyone gets up in the morning and puts on their “uniform,” no matter who you are or how much you care about fashion. If we strip the ideology down to its core: we all put clothes on. What are we saying about who we are? We do it without even thinking. And for me, my love of fashion was a conscience conclusion to tell you exactly that. So, even though I once loathed that uniform, I realize that the idea of a uniform started my journey into a world of embracing my individuality, empowered that my decision to make whatever I put on be my voice. I’ve created my own uniform.

I’m on like four MTV shows right now, which is crazy. It started three years ago. I never got the full story but I believe they found me on YouTube, talking about men’s pickup lines. I had done a video for MAXIM magazine that producers over at MTV must’ve found funny, so they asked me to come in and audition for a pilot. I was like; “I really don’t have any money right now. Is this paid?” I didn’t even have money to get on the subway for the audition. They were like, “We’ll give you 200 bucks.” I went in, and they asked me a bunch of questions; about being a man, what manhood is... I didn’t really understand what was going on, but I was brutally honest in my interview and talked about how I used to be a bottle waitress, because one of the questions was—should men get bottle service? So I completed the interview and didn’t hear back for a while, so I had forgotten about it, before getting the call about the show getting picked up, and that it was going to be on MTV and I was part of the cast. I was so caught off guard, but I was ecstatic. My life was about to change, and it really did.

You’re a fan favorite of the Girl Code Guy Code frenzy. Do you think the way you answer questions would differ had you not grown up in a super-fast paced city? You know, they auditioned a lot of women. Girls from the west coast, girls from the east coast, and lot of the girls they ended up choosing are from the east coast. I guess because we deal with a lot of men. You walk everywhere in New York city and you meet a lot of different people; you hear a lot of pickup lines. Our patience has really decreased. We don’t have a lot of tolerance for buttheads. It’s pretty fun. Tell me something about you that the world doesn’t know yet? This is going to sound terrible, but people aren’t sure of how I came to be on TV. They think I got everything because I’m good looking, and that’s really not fair. I’m very fortunate for my life and I understand that I’m a blessed person, but there’s a lot of work that goes into what I do. People think that we’re having fun and games all day, but my schedule’s really busy, I take classes to maintain my career. I don’t expect to have everything handed to me just because of the way I look. I appreciate that MTV gave me a fighting chance at a hosting career. I never took that for granted. I went and began taking improv classes at UCB. I have mentors, and people that are helping me become a better host every day. I’m going for the longevity here in my career, so I do everything that I can to make sure that happens. You recently had a very New York birthday. Care to tell? I had the best birthday ever. You know what’s crazy; I never really celebrated a birthday. Not since I was nine years old anyway. Even on my sweet 16, my parents threw a house party and it was a bunch of my parents’ friends drinking beer, so I left.[Laughs] I don’t even know if I stayed long enough for the

cake. This year I’m embracing the fact that I’m getting older, because I finally feel comfortable in my own skin. My boyfriend flew to New York from LA and got to spend the entire week here with me my family. The first night he got here we went on a dinner dance cruise around Manhattan and New York City in general. We got to see the statue of liberty, ate amazing food, listened to great music. Then I went to a Sam Smith concert at the Apollo Theater, who I’m just in love with lately. My boyfriend and I got to see him up-close. It was gorgeous, I felt like he was singing directly to me and I cried. Then Mary J. Blige came out, it was all amazing. On my actual birthday I went to go see a Yankees game. They were playing the Blue Bays and I’m a big Yankee fan, my entire family is. My boyfriend’s even a Yankees fan and he’s not even from here. We sat right behind the Blue Jays dugout, it was so great. It was indeed a very New York birthday and probably the best week of my life. There are so many bizarrely funny things said on the show. What makes it on screen and what’s left out? It’s funny the way they edit the show because they use the most ridiculous things I’d say. A lot of the time when shooting I forget that I’m on camera and I’m joking around. I’ll get silly and say the first thing that comes to mind, and it’ll be something that’s not even true to who I am, and they’ll use that. [Laughs] When I get a little more serious, they won’t use that too much. I think they’re just trying to keep the tone fresh and fun. For example, a topic like bullying. That’s a serious topic because I was bullied a lot through school, I feel like everybody has been, somehow. But I’ll talk about it in a serious manner, and they’ll end up using one of the other comedian’s joke about it, and put a little bit of the serious stuff in it. But I get it; they’re keeping it light. Making fun of certain situations and fun of us, too. But there’s a lot of times where I’ve shown a much more serious side of me. Everybody thinks I’m ditzy or a bit of an airhead, but—no regrets. You know,

If you want to show your body and you’re not shy, then show it.

I say what I say and I think it comes off pretty funny. I’ll have guys tweet me “I can’t hear you because of your boobs,” I think I come off much more serious on Girl Code than on Guy Code. I want to empower women. If you want to show your body and you’re not shy, then show it. That’s what female empowerment is; if you want to hide it then hide it. Nobody should tell you how to dress. I’ll get a lot of tweets like “How come there are no boobs on Girl Code?” I’m like because; I’m talking to the girls. What is one thing you can’t live without? Well actually, I have been getting better at living without my phone. I put it down at least five hours a day. Which seems like nothing but I used to have it in my hand from morning to night. I feel like I could live without a lot of different things because I’m always changing up the pace. I feel like I’m the type of person that would drop everything, go to Europe and just stay there. I’ve been through so many changes in my life. I lived on my on since I was 18, so that’s about 9 years now. I’ve always had to drop a bunch of different things at a random moment just to work. I like to go see the world and experience things. I can live without pretty much anything, except my family and food and water. 111

QUITE OFTEN IT ISN’T ABOUT THE MERCHANDISE, BUT THE BOTTOM LINE. THE MENTALITY OF MONEY MAKING LEAVES MANY CONSUMERS COLD. Then there’s the irony of hair care being even more impersonal. People are casually slotted into categories: dry, normal, and oily. If only it were that simple. Tresses are temperamental. MEET the Artist!

Jade Eknaian

Airbrush Tan Artist

ONE OF THE EASIEST WAYS TO LOOK AND FEEL READY FOR SUMMER IS BY ACHIEVING THAT PERFECT GOLDEN TAN. WE ALL KNOW THAT LYING IN THE SUN JUST ISN’T GREAT FOR US. TO FAKE COLOR LIKE YOU’VE BEEN VACATIONING IN ST BART’S, WE SPOKE TO JADE EKNAIAN. SHE’S A PROFESSIONAL AIRBRUSH TAN ARTIST WHO WORKS ON SOME OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOST FAMOUS. How did you get your start in Tanning? I am actually a makeup artist, and about 8 years ago I decided spray tanning would be a great addition to my business. I use many of the same techniques, especially when it comes to contouring. Everybody loves some good contour! What can someone expect when they come to see you? My company is mobile- so I travel to all my clients homes. I like to pride my business on being really convenient for the client. Which in LA, is a number one

concern. I am usually in and out of my clients house in 20 minutes or less. Leaving them beautifully bronzed and with no mess. Is there anything that a client should do in advance to prepare for a service? I always recommend to shave and exfoliate the day before your appointment. For the day of, freshly showered with no lotion or deodorant on. What are you looking for when you see a client for the first time? The first thing I need to learn about my client is their skin type. This determines how much primer I will use on them. Primer pH balances and prepares the skin for the bronzer, and is a crucial step to a flawless spray tan. For example, how do you know what shade to Tan each individual? I usually ask my client what kind of tan they’re looking for. I do have a few different products that I like to use for different skin tones, but the shade is usually adjusted by the pressure of the gun.

How long does a Tan usually last? Your skin sheds itself every 7 days, so if properly taken care of, a full week. What can we do at home to prolong the color? You want to moisturize a couple times a day, especially after every shower. Try and avoid chlorine and excessive sweating. Are there any trends for tanning this season? As of lately, there seems to be a high request for tan lines! Seems like a little white peeking out is sexy again! ;) Do you have any pet peeves when it comes to Tans you see on the street? Yes yes yes! I can always tell when someone has a layered spray tan! Do not get another spray tan until your current one is completely gone! Layering tans is what causes people to have that funky fading, really dry skin, or even the orangey look! Ew! Is there a “celebrity tan” that people request? Actually more often, there are “celebrity tans” that people request to NOT look like! Ha ha! Who tans you? :-) Believe it or not I have gotten pretty good at maneuvering my spray tan machine around myself! What are your favorite products to maintain your tan at home? The “Sunstyle Sunless” line has amazing support products including a wash, a scrub, bronzing spray, and a daily moisturizer. My favorite is the “Sunstyle Catwalk Bronzing Spray”. The perfect aerosol to touch up, or give you a boost in between appointments! Stunning, long lasting color, and really compliments the airbrush! I always have this available for my clients! Contact Jade for more info! What do you do for fun when you’re not working? Luckily I consider my work really fun!! I do, however, love low-key nights with good friends, food, and wine! (And my 2 pups)!

THANKS TO GLOBAL ICONS, BILL GATES AND STEVE JOBS, MOST PEOPLE KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT THE SILICON VALLEY SOFTWARE BOOM OF THE EARLY 1980’S; HOWEVER, THERE’S A CONCURRENT TALE. ONE EQUALLY

“It kind of baffled me in the beginning, why we were setting the show in Silicon Prairie, as opposed to Silicon Valley,” she says matter-of -factly, referring to the buzzy drama, ‘Halt and Catch Fire’. Where she plays a character name Donna Clark, a Dallas-based computer engineer and Texas Instruments employee. “Other than the fact that Chris Cantwell (the show’s creator, along with Christopher C. Rogers) grew up there, but eventually it became obvious that these people were like cowboys; it really was the wild west of burgeoning industry.”

is so ubiquitous, and (thus) the people working in this world generally have a real sense of self-confidence. They walk around understanding how our cell-phones work…. Can you imagine? I would feel so powerful if I walked around with that kind of working knowledge! “ Instead, the Northwestern alum and self-described Luddite is quite content to focus her energy on what she does know: for instance, the importance of “understanding the people who understand computers.” Bishé considers that her “main job” as an

FOR ACTRESS, KERRY BISHÉ, EITHER.

I just think it’s really amazing when complicated people, especially complicated women are on television. Bishé (pronounced “bi- shea”) realizes that comparing computer program mers to cowboys might sound a bit farfetched to some, but when she signed on to star in the AMC hit (just picked up for its second season) and subsequently immersed herself in the multi-billion dollar tech world that it portrays, her eyes were instantly opened: “We think of nerds in this very general way as pale, antisocial kids in their moms’ basements, but technology 129

Like when Ben Affleck cast her as a hostage in 2012’s Oscar Winning ‘Argo’… “Ben had the 6 of us who played the houseguests live in a house in LA together with no e-mails, no phones, no computers, nothing anachronistic to 1980. says, still somewhat delighted by the memory. “In order to play along, I brought my old Polaroid camera and took pictures, and now I have these old photos of Scoot and I in clothes from the 70’s looking to the world like a married couple. It’s so funny that this is a real physical history that exists of these two people.” That would be Scoot McNairy, actor and indie darling who, in addition to playing frustrated computer expert, Gordon Clark, on ‘Halt and Catch Fire’ has starred in Steve McQueen’s ‘12 Years A Slave’, Lynn Shelton’s ‘Touchy Feely’, and David Michôd’s ‘The Rover’ this past year alone. Bishé considers herself lucky to once again be playing his onscreen wife, but admits that their domestic life is just a tad more complicated this time around: “You meet Donna and she’s the put upon housewife that we all know so well, but I think, even in the pilot, you get all of these little exciting discoveries.” This was particularly important to the actress, who wasn’t looking to play just another desperate housewife…“In a lot of movies or TV shows, there’s this trope about the traditional woman trying to keep the hero or anti-hero from pursuing his goals and ambitions, and we sort of dispose of that in the pilot. (My character) gets behind him and we see that he will get to go and pursue his dreams, and then it feels like the rest of the series is more concerned with Will she get to pursue hers?!” If Ms. Bishé has anything to say about it, Donna most certainly will, but when your show takes its name from the computer command for self-destruct, you better believe things are “gonna” get a hell of a lot more complicated first. Either way though, Kerry Bishé isn’t complaining; instead, she’s quite content to let things evolve, as they will. “I just think it’s really amazing when complicated people, especially complicated women are on television. Playing her has already been so expansive, I consider myself lucky every day, just to be a part of this team.”

SINGLE WITH JASMINE BY JASMINE VO, SENIOR LIFESTYLE EDITOR

They say change is inevitable. Like seasons with the weather, we as people also have seasons. Sometimes the people in our lives can’t sustain the seasons with us and they tend to shed off. But one particular person could potentially really change your season and that person could be the love in your life. Break ups seem to be all around me lately. Many of them unexpected while some were a long time coming. Regardless I dislike watching my close loved ones suffer. Sometimes the person who suffers the most in a break up is the friend that is closest to the couple. As friends we feel helpless because we know only time heals wounds. And we constantly feel disloyal as we don’t want to choose a side but try to keep neutral between our two friends. As days and weeks pass by the one question everyone keeps asking me is, “We loved each other so much why did it have to end?” I never really know what to say at this point, all I can say is what I have experienced. When it comes to relationships we are all secretly hopeless romantics. We all love the great story on how fate brought us to the person we love and how we fight to stay together. Logically, if the love is there it should conquer all right? Love is a powerful feeling. It gives us the courage to do the things we never thought could be done. Everyone comes into our lives to give us what we need at that moment in our lives. After my last break up I did a lot of self-work for two years. It wasn’t something I saw coming. He was my best friend and our best friends were mutual. Everything came easy. When our relationship fell apart, SEXY issue - BELLOmag.com

going into year three, we both were left with shattered hearts. Everyone kept asking us, “What happen?” And for years I didn’t know what to say but now looking back I now know what happen. We just grew apart and couldn’t sustain the new seasons in each other’s lives. The storms and fires we both were trying to manage us bigger than us. It took a long time to heal from the piece of my heart that was ripped out when he left. I wouldn’t wish that pain upon anybody. But without him I wouldn’t have gotten through the turbulent time I was having when he met me. I wouldn’t have known what I was missing in my life without the love he brought to my attention. Unfortunately, we couldn’t work together as a team so we had to go our separate ways. Once it was all over I found myself doing the following things that helped heal a part of me I thought was unhealible (is that a word?):

1

I fell back in love with me. Who I was when I was with my ex wasn’t the person I am now without him. So I took time to date myself. I asked myself questions like, do I like taking road trips up the coast? Do I love camping? Any activity that came into my mind I did. I made it a point to do it alone. Because when you do anything that brings you joy, it doesn’t matter who you are with it is just an act of love. Unconditional love comes in all forms. Not just from one person.

2

Support. I surrounded myself with friends who understood what I was going through. Not the friends who kept saying “I hate being single.” Negative people are the death of trying

to move forward. I didn’t need nay Sayers, I needed yay Sayers. The yay Sayers that never let me go out of town alone. They dropped their weekend plans to take the road trip with me they knew I desperately needed.

3

Fitness. I started working out daily to get my endorphins going. The more I worked out and focused on my physical health the better I felt. Eating right and getting my blood going kept me happy. If you are already in shape, try a new work out! Train your body and mind to embrace something new.

4

Be Fearless. Dating can be hard. Especially if you haven’t done it for years. But dating doesn’t have to be hard. It is an amazing process to learn what you do want and what you don’t want. I can honestly say everyone I ever dated while I was single had an amazing quality that drew me to that person. But what dating really taught me was, what normal behavior was and what was not. We often try to look for the good in people and that can bite us in the ass. If you jump into a relationship with everyone you date you will never know what you want to put up with and what you will not. I’m not a therapist but I am an expert when it comes to surviving break ups. Remember not to be so hard on yourself. Enjoy life and try not to run to the finish line. The more you work on you the better you will be for your future partner. You are an infinite source of unconditional love and deserve nothing less. “Don’t grieve for what doesn’t come. Some things that don’t happen keeps disasters from happening.” Rumi 136

NATURAL WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR SEX LIFE AND KEEP IT INTERESTING AND EXCITING WITH YOUR PARTNER

IF YOU WERE OFFERED A CHOICE BETWEEN YOUR FAVORITE DESSERT AND A NIGHT OF MIND BLOWING SEX, MANY OF YOU MAY HAVE A TOUGH TIME DECIDING. DON’T WORRY, THAT DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN YOU HAVE A LOW LIBIDO. THE SAME RECEPTORS IN YOUR BRAIN THAT MEASURE PLEASURE FROM A SATISFYING MEAL ALSO READ PLEASURE DERIVED FROM SEX. ENDORPHINS RELEASED DURING EXERCISE ALSO AFFECT THOSE SAME PLEASURE RECEPTORS. So if you are looking to spice things up with your partner, and heighten your satisfaction in the bedroom, forget about the oysters and lingerie. Instead, focus on finding some physical activities you enjoy doing together, and making a few simple changes to your diet. GET YOUR BLOOD FLOWING. Any cardio vascular activity that increases blood flow to the groin, pelvis or booty will help increase libido. It will also decrease stress, which can negatively affect arousal and performance. Hiking, walking, bicycling, yoga and strength training are all great choices. GET STRONG. Many forms of exercise also boost testosterone, like strength training,

Consuming fat and Omegas is essential for the production of testosterone and estrogen, the two hormones directly related to sexual appetite. Include olive oil, nuts, chia seeds and fish like salmon in your diet.

Staying hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily will keep you mentally and physically alert. Hydration also ensures you aren’t low on important sexual fluids.

Studies show that partaking in new and challenging activities with your partner can boost dopamine, which helps fuel libido. Enter a race together, meet after work for spin class, or take classes learning a new activity you can participate in jointly. Maybe you can learn to salsa dance or take up hiking or kayaking. BALANCE. Eat a balanced breakfast together that includes protein, fruit and complex grains, like and egg white scramble with whole grain toast or oatmeal with nuts and berries. This will give you sustained energy all morning, preventing you from making poor energy sapping decisions later. Avoid carb and sugar rich choices like bagels and pastries, which will leave you feeling sluggish. CHOCOLATE. Perhaps you don’t need to choose between dessert and sex after all. Chocolate actually boosts serotonin, another mood elevator. Choose a piece of high quality dark chocolate as your “nightcap” if you are hoping to get frisky. WATERMELON. This delicious fruit has it all. It contains 92% water, to keep you hydrated, and a phytonutrient that is converted in the body to an amino acid that affects blood vessels in the nether-regions in the same way as Viagra.

Warning, by switching up your diet and increasing your fitness routine, you and your partner may tone up, drop a few extra pounds, and find your self-image improving. Ladies - reward yourself with a new outfit and heels and wear them with your sexy new attitude. For men, there is nothing more irresistible than a confident woman. SEXY issue - BELLOmag.com

‘LAST WEEKEND’ (REVIEW)

by Hiko Mitsuzuka Patricia Clarkson heads an ensemble cast in Last Weekend, a dramedy about an affluent family reuniting for a Labor Day weekend that is, at times, so unbearably superficial, audiences may have a hard time relating to -- let alone sympathizing with -- characters too deeply invested in their own petty dramas and dilemmas. Clarkson plays Celia Green, a woman struggling to let go of the past as she and her husband (a barely present Chris Mulkey) come to terms with selling their gorgeous vacaton home overlooking Lake Tahoe. Zachary Booth (Damages) plays oldest son Theo, a TV writer who brings along his Hollywood posse (True Blood’s Rutina Wesley and a criminally underused Fran Kranz) and his new boyfriend Luke -- if you want to call him that -- a supposed one-night stand that has turned into a three-week “relationship.” Younger son Roger (Joseph Cross) shows up with girlfriend Vanessa, whose only motivation throughout the weekend is to push her line of flavored water. (The Greens own a chain of gyms, which explains their wealth, and the bottled drinks would be a perfect fit!) As for the plethora of other characters, Mary Kay Place and Sheila Kelley pop in as Celia’s equally self-absorbed friends who’d rather fuss over which wine to pair with dinner than dwell on the well-

being of the family’s groundskeeper who just got electrocuted. (The scene is ambiguously written; are the filmmakers making fun of these onepercenters or attempting to portray them as real human beings?) Randomly thrown into the mix is Glee’s Jayma Mays as Theo’s celebrity BFF who’s only function is to deliver a late-night pep talk. And then there’s Judith Light, Celia’s frenemy neighbor who’s painted, by Celia herself, as a wretched woman but turns into a shoulder for Celia to cry/whine on in the end. The only character who dares to shatter the proverbial glass ceiling is Roger, and actor Joseph Cross turns him into the most relatable (and frankly likable) figure among the bickering bunch. Having recently been fired for screwing up his company’s finances, Roger brings to the fray a much-needed dose of reality -- but only for so long. Other times he’s the poster boy for White Guilt, embarrassed by his family’s riches Directors Tom Dolby (who also penned the script) and Tom Williams have ultimately succeeded in creating a beautifully shot 94-minute Brooks Brothers/Pottery Barn ad populated with people who have nothing better to do than wallow in self-pity (someone actually asks “Are we good people?” after dropping over a hundred dollars at a farmers market and delivering some unwarranted gossip).

As for Clarkson, we’re never quite sure why she’s so distressed about selling the family home. Many of her lines come across as bitter and bitchy without much context. More than halfway through the film, I turned to my friend and asked, “Are we really supposed to care about her? Is she dying? Is this why she has such a huge stick up her ass?” That said, no one gets sick, and no one dies. Thankfully. What is killed, however, is the opportunity to genuinely connect with these characters. It’s too bad that sympathy doesn’t arrive until the last few minutes of the film when Clarkson delivers a poignant monologue that clearly expresses what Celia is going through, the pain all mothers feel as they watch their adult children continue to move on through life without them. Last Weekend will be released by Sundance Selects on August 29th.

*Screened at Outfest in Los Angeles.
