INTRO Let us Entertain you!!! This, being the year’s newest September theme: Entertainment with a touch of our usual Fall Fashion Preview! Stunning and chic, with legs for days, our cover girl, Jaime King, is the perfect hybrid representation of Fashion-Meets-Entertainment. Embodied in a 60s influenced editorial shot by Bello mag’s own, Aleksandar Tomovic (styled by Jeff Kim), King confirms her royal position as one of Hollywood’s most wanted fashionistas. From Mr. Fantastic to immortality, Ioan Gruffudd resurfaces strong in the primetime scene as the lead in his new highly anticipated ABC network show, Forever. Shot against the New York City Skyline, Gruffudd reminds us of his leading man stance in this gor-

geous editorial shot by Karl Simone. Our Fashion cover never looked so hot as it does having Ray Donovan’s newest addition, Vinessa Shaw leading us into this spectacular section; filled with everything fall fashion has to offer. You may remember him as Dr. Wes Maxfield on The Vampire Diaries, but now you’ll be able to watch him weekly on the CW’s newsest set-tobe-another-hit comic hero show, The Flash. Rick Cosnett covers our Lifestyle section with a cool, James Deanesque retro editorial shot by Teren Oddo and our multi-talented Fashion Director, Warren Alfie Baker. Covering the Art section and lead of Eli Roth’s latest thriller, The Green Inferno, we have Chilean born, Lorenza

Izzo, whose feature emulates that of artist, Patrick Nagel’s 80s paintings and shot in West Hollywood, Ca by photographer, Marc Cartwright. It was music to our ears when we got the news that we would have Debby Ryan represent our Music section! Shot at the world famous Avalon Hollywood by photographer (and Bello mag Creative Director, South America), Amanda Elkins, Ryan’s cover and feature shows us an edgier, vampy side to her; opposite of her Disney’s Jessie counterpart. Entertainment at its finest... Welcome to Bello’s world. All the Best, Leslie Alejandro, Executive Director

JAIME KING Does It Her Way WORDS BY BRAD LIBERTI PHOTOS BY ALEKSANDAR TOMOVIC

WHILE MOST CELEBRITIES DO THEIR VERY BEST TO APPEAR UNCALCULATED WHEN INTERACTING WITH THE PUBLIC, GENERALLY THESE EFFORTS ARE ABOUT AS SPONTANEOUS AS A PEOPLE MAGAZINE COVER SHOOT… BUT ACTRESS JAIME KING ISN’T EXACTLY ‘MOST CELEBRITIES’. FOR STARTERS, THE HERT OF DIXIE SCENE-STEALER HAS BEEN A PART OF THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS FOR PRACTICALLY ALL OF HER LIFE, EVER SINCE SHE FIRST LEFT OMAHA, NEBRASKA AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 14 FOR THE GLAMOROUS CATWALKS OF NEW YORK, PARIS, AND MILAN.

MORE IMPORTANTLY HOWEVER, KING HAS MANAGED TO BUILD AN ENVIABLE CAREER IN THIS TOWN – SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITIONING FROM TOP MODEL TO IN-DEMAND ACTRESS - WHILE SOMEHOW STILL HONORING THE DISARMING AUTHENTICITY AND REBEL SPIRIT THAT MADE HER A STAR IN THE FIRST PLACE. “I’VE ALWAYS FELT THAT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO SHARE MY TRUTH”, SHE SAYS NOT WITHOUT AMPLE CONVICTION, “SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT THE PROCESSES THAT WE ALL GO THROUGH, YES, THEY’RE CHALLENGING SOMETIMES; YES, THEY CAN BE HEARTBREAKING; BUT ABOVE ALL, THEY’RE EXPERIENCES THAT WE ALL SHARE.”

The actress is big on acknowledging our common humanity, not in a wannabeOprah, let’s raise my branding potential kind of way, but rather because she genuinely believes that we are all in this together. It’s a world-view King says she’s always had, but one certainly honed through years spent as a globetrotting model in the late 90’s- when she could easily hit three different continents in a weekend (“The world was opened up for me in a such a way that I will always be grateful.”) And in return, Ms. King opened up her own life to her devoted fans – mostly teenage girls her same age yearning to escape suburbia for the glamorous catwalks of Europe - acknowledging her struggles with drugs and depression as an impressionable youth thrust into a decidedly adult world. Those days are clearly long gone, but the former model’s need to be authentic, and to let others, especially women, know what it’s really like behind the glamorous facade, has never waned. Case in point, her recent decision to come out about a difficult health problem that many women suffer from in silence. “I had never spoken publicly about what I’d been through in regards to endometriosis and my process of trying to conceive my son, but I’d gone all these years with this undiagnosed, very painful thing that many young women have but that we just don’t talk about”, she says, referring to the female health disorder that affects the cells lining the uterus. She credits conversations with friends for helping her first to realize that she wasn’t alone and then to muster up the courage to go public with her story. 11

But ironically for the former model, it was a picture that truly set everything in motion. “It was 4 am, and I was breastfeeding my son, when the woman who was helping me take care of him took the picture”, she says, explaining the much talked about snapshot she posted to Instagram back in June. “Everything you could possibly feel, I was feeling during that sacred, challenging, beautiful, scary time.”

right and a choice to do what she wants to do.” The immediate response from most people was passionate support, with fans reaching out to let King know that they once again related to her bold candor, but of course, there were some haters who cited King’s breastfeeding shot, along with those taken by fellow models, Miranda Kerr and Gisele Bündchen, as examples of Hollywood showboating.

Yes, I live a very blessed life, but I come from a blue-collar family in Omaha, Nebraska, and I’ve supported myself since I was 13-years-old. Her adorable son, James, was not yet 7 months old, her husband of 7 years, writer/director, Kyle Newman, had been gone for 5 and half months, working on a film project, and King herself was still juggling obligations to the hit CW show on which she stars. But even sleep deprived and emotional, the actress felt she had to take a stand, tagging the picture – “Breastfeeding should not be taboo- and bottle feeding should not be judged- it’s ALL fun for the whole family :)” The new mom explains: “I had been hearing so much BS about breastfeeding (being) the only way and that if women use formula there must be something wrong with them. And it made me think about this thing within mommy-hood where there’s all this women against women stuff going on, so I posted it because I believe every woman has a

“Yes, I live a very blessed life, but I come from a blue-collar family in Omaha, Nebraska, and I’ve supported myself since I was 13-years-old”, she says defiantly. Then, as if any explanation is owed, she begins to justify her need for a nanny before rightfully stopping to equate this ‘help-shaming’ with the breastfeeding vs. formula argument that her Instagram post was so effectively trying to diffuse in the first place. Alas, as she has learned from the two decades she’s spent in the biz, somebody’s always going to have an opinion. But unlike another willowy blonde fashion plate who’s ventured from acting into the domestic debate with far less success (Goop anyone?), King’s supporters most definitely outweigh her detractors, especially when it comes to her enviable style. “I September 2014 - BELLO

used to be made fun of for the way that I dressed as a kid and ironically that’s what I’ve became noted for today”, she says. The actress favors pairing classic and eclectic pieces but admits, “I get inspired by different things every day. Like, I’ll watch Chinatown and all of a sudden be like, Oh my God, Faye Dunaway!” And passion like this extends itself way beyond fashion for the admitted fan-girl…“I love Harry Potter and anything magical or mystical,” she declares before proudly bringing up her involvement with the Lucas Films family (King has lent her voice to the popular animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2009). She’s also a huge fan of young stars like Taylor Swift, Lena Dunham, and Emma Stone (“They’re completely authentic with what they put out there.”) And she greatly admires the Oscar-Nominated actress, Hailee Steinfeld, with who she appears in her husband’s new film, Barely Lethal (“She’s a fashionista, but also just a good girl.”) Until then, you can catch Ms. King reprising her roles as twins, Goldie and Wendy in this month’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, albeit briefly… “It was bittersweet that I couldn’t do more than basically a scene because I’m under contract with Warner Brothers (the studio that produces her CW drama), but so great to reprise the role for the fans.” And of course there’s Hart of Dixie’s Queen Bee, Lemon Breeland, a character who actually helps to illustrate the actress’s belief in the commonality of us all. “Like Lemon, I have this side of me that has grown up to be this people pleasing, put a smile on in front of the camera, perfect person, and in many ways, that is what our industry and our world demands of us all”, she says, before quickly adding, “but ultimately I’ve learned that I have to say and do what I know in my heart is right.” And that’s why in a business of beautiful and talented women, there’s only one Jamie King.

THE TALENTED MR. GRUFFUDD “I am so sorry to have kept you waiting,” Ioan Gruffudd apologizes sincerely, sounding just as charming on the phone as he does on television. WORDS BY CHRISTI KASSITY PHOTOS BY KARL SIMONE In an industry of “hurry up and wait,” it is nothing I hadn’t experienced before, but it was refreshing to be met with an apology. That doesn’t often happen in Hollywood. Then again, Ioan Gruffudd isn’t your average Hollywood actor. While the Welsh native has lived in Los Angeles for the better part of ten years, neither his accent nor his humility have been greatly affected. He had a good reason for running behind though: he just returned from a photoshoot for his new ABC show Forever, which premieres this month. He also brought up our own photoshoot from the previous day, and his humility continued to shine as he praised our photographer Karl Simone: “You get used to having somebody with a camera and a computer next to him, and you get to see the images [right away]. He didn’t need all that, he just got the camera and started shooting. It was like a photoshoot from the past; you don’t get to see any of the images. You just have to trust him, and he certainly knew what he was doing.” I admit it: I had been nervous all week about this interview. From his leading role in Horatio Hornblower and his smaller role in Titanic to the canceled19

too-soon Ringer and nearly everything in between - I›ve been a fan, and it›s always given me a belly full of butterflies to talk to anybody I admire. Even before we were able to get into the interview, Ioan (it›s pronounced «yo-ahn») had me feeling as if I were talking to an old friend.

Forever follows New York City medical examiner Dr. Henry Morgan as he not only solves murders, he attempts to solve the secret of his own inexplicable immortality. «In the pilot, Henry is shot -- about 200 years ago -- on a slave ship coming to America, and his body is tossed overboard,» he explains. «That evening, he comes back to life, for whatever reason. We don›t know what that is. From that point onwards, he is kind of frozen in time as a 35-year-old, and whenever he does die, be it from a disease, or he gets shot or gets killed for whatever reason, he›s resurrected.» If you think the premise sounds a bit familiar, you could be thinking of the short-lived Fox drama New Amsterdam, or possibly (but more unlikely) the book titledForever about a man who is granted immortality as long as he does not leave the island of Manhattan. To clarify: the show is not based off either

of these, and while there are parallels, the show is its own unique entity. I asked Ioan about his thoughts on the inevitable comparisons: «I just thought it was unique. I hadn›t seen New Amsterdam, and I haven›t read the novel also calledForever which people have also been claiming that this is a take on, but I thought it was so unique, so clever, and really honest and innocent. «What›s beautiful is we›ve got this case-of-the-week, every week, where [Henry] is very smart, and bright, and sort of Sherlockian. He helps to solve the case every week. The serialization of the series would then be the flashbacks and [Henry›s] history, past loves, and everything that he›s learned, and loved, and lost over time. You could call it unique in that sense, especially for a network show. It›s not just your standard procedural show; there is a bit of drama involved.» One of the quirky bits of Henry Morgan›s resurrections is that he always wakes up in water -- and he›s always naked. That is, of all things, Ioan›s least favorite part of filming the show. «I wish I had time and energy to build up my body like Hugh Jackman or Dwayne Johnson. There are just not enough hours of the September 2014 - BELLO

day to turn my body into that kind of body, so I am doing it in reverse. I›m sort of not eating much at all, and we are painting on the abs.» «Airbrushed abs - I›m sure that›s how Chris Evans does it as well,» I joke, referring to his Fantastic Four costar and real-life friend. Just as his character in Forever must grow and adapt to the changing times, Ioan has found himself being gradually dragged into the 21st century: «I just arrived to Twitter this week... I don›t know how it works yet or how you get more followers... I haven›t quite grasped the hashtag element of it.» The phenomenon, and a bit ironic sense of «social» media, isn›t entirely lost on him, though: «When you›re out in the street or in an elevator or waiting in a waiting room, nobody talks to one another anymore; we›re all looking down at our bloody screens. So, socially, as much as everybody says ‹Hey, isnt it great because we›re all socializing with one another?› but 21

its only in a virtual world, we›re not actually socializing with the person in front of us. We are ignoring them by looking down. For me, when I get the odd moment of downtime that I have, it›s actually quite fun to see my friend Piers Morgan being lambasted again by people and him sort of standing up for himself and coming out with some outrageous statement. It›s a lot of fun to see the back and forth, especially for the people who›ve got real followers.» While he is in New York filming, Ioan has had to leave his wife and two daughters behind in Los Angeles: «It›s one of those things as actors we›ve dealt with all our careers; that sort of nomadic lifestyle... It›s pretty tough at the moment on me, emotionally, because we work hard and work such crazy hours on the show.» He reminds himself that he›s doing this for his family, and his dedication to his «girls» is wholly apparent. What is a man to do, when he is without his family? One thing I found we have

in common is our love for good old English Football (or soccer, if you must). Turns out we both root for Liverpool, and for a few minutes we discuss our disappointment in losing Luis Suarez and our faith in manager Brendan Rodgers. What else keeps him occupied? There›s The Art of Elysium, a wonderful organization with which he is involved. It›s about «bringing creativity and art either through the medium of music or art itself -- like painting -- or acting and drama...We bring a bunch of actors to do some sort of improvisational storytelling in schools and hospitals, either for the children themselves, to have some stimulus and entertainment, or even for the families who are there all day, everyday with their children who have very serious illnesses and conditions.» Cheers, Ioan. You›ll never walk alone.

ABC will offer a sneak peek of Forever on September 22. You can follow Ioan on Twitter @IoanGruffudd. September 2014 - BELLO

BLURRED LINES

Hiko Mitsuzuka sits down with the stars of BFFs, the indie comedy that’s charming the film festival circuit...and redefining friendship. “…SHE’S NASTY ON SET, AND SHE’S A WHORE.”

A

ctress-writer Tara Karsian is jokingly attempting to get a reaction out of her costar (and real-life BFF) Andrea Grano as she pulls up a chair to join our conversation on a Monday night in the middle of the lobby of the Directors Guild of America on Sunset Boulevard. It’s one of many instances in which the two actresses display their charismatic banter and knack for playfully prodding each other. Outfest, LA’s long-running LBGT film festival, has just begun, yet the stars/ writers of BFFs are already experiencing film festival fatigue. Having finished a whirlwind press tour with the film, the women are doing their best to find some peace and quiet amidst the chaos. “We’re so tired” seems to be a common phrase they’ve been uttering to themselves all week.

BFFs takes a hilarious and heartwarming snaphot of what happens when two straight best friends, the just-brokenup Kat (Karsian) and serial dater Samantha (Grano), pretend to be lesbians in order to take advantage of a free couples weekend workshop. If it sounds a tad similar to a certain MTV hit series (Faking It), think again. Instead of focusing on the fickle (and fluid) preferences of youth, BFFs carefully blurs the lines of friendship and addresses the basic, human desires between women of a certain age. “We talked a lot about this,” Karsian recalls, “that if this were made with two 25-year-olds, with the exact same script, it’d be a totally different film… But I do think when women our age – if ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com

there was a questioning – probably the most likely character to question would be your best friend. Someone you’re, for lack of a better term, intimate with – because friendships are intimate. Sometimes you’re more intimate with your friends than you are with the person you’re with because you talk about things like that, and you don’t have to walk on eggshells.” Just like any independent production, it was a long and arduous uphill climb to get the film made. “We had a lot of line producers say, ‘Don’t even bother,’” remembers Grano, referring to the budgets they had to formulate to fit the story. There were also the requisite setbacks...like that time they lost their Malibu location for a day due to a mixup with the vacation rental office they used to find their dream house for the couples workshop sessions. “Andrea had a total 12-year old meltdown,” Karsian recalls.

Another setback: uncooperative eyela shes. Karsian recalls the very first scene on the very first day of shooting: “There was so much glue on my false eyelashes, that literally it [blinking] was like slomo,” Tara says. “I had drag queen lashes on.” “We pissed ourselves laughing,” Grano chuckles. “It was horrible…these motherfuckers were so long, and they put so much glue…” “But the one that kept sticking…” “The costume assistant didn’t know that she needed to cut the drag queen lashes, so this mother, which weighed five pounds – when I would blink, her hair would blow. That’s how big they were.” “It’s true,” Andrea says, stifling another laugh. 26

With over two decades of film and TV experience between them, Grano and Karsian, as producers, prided themselves on making sure things ran smoothly for their cast and crew. “We never went over 12 hours. We really wanted our crew to be treated well,” Grano says. And when things wouldn’t go according to plan, the women avoided playing the roles of Good Producer/Bad Producer by creating “Alice,” an imaginary, tough-as-nails co-producer who could take all the flack. Got a problem with craft services? Take it up with Alice. Don’t like the shooting schedule? Complain to Alice. I soon volunteer to help on their next project and pose as Alice’s assistant, and we immediately come up with a grand scheme. Karsian looks at Grano and says, “We’d have to give him a really fabulous name though.” “He already has one.” The conversation continues to go off on tangents like this, and since there are no publicists hovering over us with time limits -- rarely the case during interviews -- the three of us go with the proverbial flow, shifting the talk to Gone Girl (my paperback peeks out of my bag, and I urge them to read it before the movie comes out) and their experience with raising funds on Indiegogo. “It was horrible,” Grano says, “but at the end of the day, we raised exactly that number and did it for exactly that number. It was voodoo witch stuff…Maybe I’m a powerful witch woman too-” “You’re not,” Karsian cuts in. “Dammit.”

When Andrea Met Tara: The two actresses crossed paths when Tara need-

ed an actor for a play she was directing. A mutual friend recommended Andrea. Cut to: 11 years later, and they’re filmmaking partners and actual BFFs. Soon director Andrew Putschoegl drops by, and the conversation switches back to movies, particularly of the horror genre. Grano, a fan, admits to never seeing Sleepaway Camp, and I avoid spoiling the surprise ending for her. But back to the film...Would BFFs work with two straight guys? Or would it be something completely different? Grano: “I have a lot of straight friends from a small town who believe that if you kissed a guy, you’re gay. Whereas a woman can kiss a woman, and it can be experimental, it can be questioning. I think there’s a mentality in society that…I think you can be bisexual if you’re a man, and people accept that, but secretly, a lot of guys who don’t know a lot of gay or bisexual people believe you’re really not bisexual. So it’d be harder to believe that a man, especially one who’s not 18 and in college, could be questioning like that. I think that’s societal.” Karsian: “Men’s friendships are different. I’m not saying they’re any less important, but I do think it’s a very different thing. I think women’s friendships, especially when you get older, leans away from superficiality. You cut out the bullshit.” Putschoegl remembers a conversation he had with a well-known film distributor: “The guy who took a look at the trailer watched the movie and said, ‘Oh, it’s a great concept. But there are no big stars. We can’t sell it…but, if you recast it with men and cast it up – like, get a Hugh Jackman in there or someone – try that, do a sequel.”

“It’s a totally different movie with men,” Grano reacts. “And you know what he’s saying basically -- and this is another problem with our industry -- that men are more bankable. Because why didn’t he say ‘Do it with Sandra Bullock and Drew Barrymore?’ Then I can say, ‘Okay, I get it. They’re an easier sell than us.’” But if the basic concept were to remain intact with two female household names, I ask, would the movie be altered for a more general audience? “They would try to do another I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,” assumes Putschoegl, referring to the Adam Sandler-Kevin James comedy from 2007. “And that’s not what this movie and this story could ever be.” “It would have to be like they were bamboozled into thinking they had an attraction,” Grano chimes in. When the two women showed their script around, they were told to sell it. But they were wary of placing the material in the hands of individuals who could compromise the film’s inherent message, its essence. Hence why they took on the enormous responsiblity of bringing it to life themselves. “The friendship Andrea and I have, I think two actresses could definitely act in these roles,” Karsian muses, “but they’re not going to have the built-in history…I mean, I just watched a film about two best friends, and it was very obvious to me that they were two actresses.” “No matter how good the acting was, you could just tell,” Grano adds. “I don’t know if you noticed this, but we bicker a lot. We banter.”

It’s very rare do you ever find people that you can talk to on a one-on-one level and they make you feel like you have known them forever. Theo Rossi may seem like a newcomer to the acting world, but has a little over a decade of television and movies under his belt and has portrayed a multitude of characters on just about every network imaginable before landing the coveted role of the enigmatic, anxiety-ridden, Juan Carlos (“Juice”) Ortiz on the FX drama series SONS OF ANARCHY which is heading into its final season.

IN CONVERSING WITH THIS EAST COAST NATIVE, WHOSE DOWN-TO-EARTH DEMEANOR COMES FROM GROWING UP VERY FAMILY-ORIENTED IN A TOWN WHERE PEOPLE WOULD GO TO SOCCER AND FOOTBALL GAMES AND HAVE SUNDAY DINNERS, YOU BEGIN TO LEARN A LOT MORE ABOUT THIS ENGAGING MAN WITH A MILLION DOLLAR SMILE. “I WAS BORN IN BROOKLYN, BUT RAISED WHERE I LIVE RIGHT NOW IN STATEN ISLAND. STATEN ISLAND IS A VERY BLUE COLLAR TOWN WITH FIREMEN AND POLICEMEN SO OBVIOUSLY IT’S JUST A WORKING TOWN WITH A SMALL TOWN FEEL TO IT. I HAD THE ABILITY TO BE AROUND MANHATTAN, BROOKLYN AND GROW UP IN NEW YORK CITY SO, IN THAT ASPECT, GROWING UP HERE WAS PRETTY AMAZING.”

With an incredible body of work playing guest starring roles and making his mainstream movie debut in the 2008 sci-fi/thriller CLOVERFIELD, his role on SONS OF ANARCHY would make him, as he would like to say, the luckiest actor in the world. “The reason you get into this whole business [acting] is you want to play as many different emotions and different characters as you can. I got so lucky enough to be on one show that spanned over seven years of my life and I have been fortunate enough to play every single emotion. The character [Juice] first started out as just a member of this motorcycle club who would always get into trouble and doing things wrong in a very funny and comedic way. As he got deeper involved in the club business, things started getting more complicated. A couple of seasons ago, the show delved into Juice’s race and heritage and on how it affected the antiquated laws of this motorcycle club. That’s when things started taking a dangerous turn which led to a lot of murderous activity and him trying to make things right which ultimately led him to trying to take his own life. He’s become dangerous by mistake and not by his own fault. I’ve always said Juice is the most harmless, dangerous guy you will ever meet.” With the show going into its final season, Rossi promises a really tense, chaotic and anxiety-ridden season that he’s absolutely honored to be a part of. The audience will not be disappointed with this upcoming thrill ride. 31

When discussing life after and outside SOA, Rossi is already hitting the ground running with his production company Dos Dudes Pictures. Rossi firmly believes that as a student of Hollywood, as we would like to eloquently call it, you have to really get involved in making your own stuff. “I decided to start a production company with my best friend from home who I have grown up with my whole life. We were looking for projects that were meaningful to us and that we felt people could relate to.

Oscar nominated film THE WOLF OF WALL STREET. We made this film in my hometown of Staten Island with Karen Allen as my mom, Michael Harney from ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK as my dad and Ashley Williams as well stars in it. It’s just a tremendous cast of people and we got to shoot with the whole community coming together in the dead of winter. We will be hitting all of the circuits and the festivals when we complete it. We’re really proud of this film. We also have some

I want to show the kids and the youth of the world that you can have everything you want, but you’ve got to step outside your comfort zone for a minute. I love the “giant tent pole” of movies, but sometimes it’s nice to go back to character-driven, story-driven films or even television shows that focus on the relationships of everyday life and not having these tremendous car chases or explosions.” The first film under the Dos Dudes Pictures umbrella that will be coming out this year will be the film BAD HURT. “It was a play before call Bad Hurt on Cedar Street and we made this play into a film. We partnered with Emma Tillinger Koskoff, who produced the

television shows in development and we already have our next film ready to go so we should be, hopefully, starting pre-production in January. Exciting times. With his now newfound experience he has gained over the years, you can guarantee that Rossi, as well as his production company, are on their way to making their stamp in the entertainment industry. When Rossi is not on his daily grind filming and producing, you will catch him squeezing in some exercise. “I’m pretty crazy about fitness and

health. I’m a big runner and I sign myself up for as many races as I can do. I do anything physical whether it be training, fighting, running races or anything in between. I am constantly on the search for self-improvement.” In addition to health and physical fitness, charity work and giving back are also a high priority in his life through nonprofits and educating the youth of the world. “I want to show the youth that the world is not all condensed into a phone or a computer screen, it’s much bigger than that. I want to show the kids and the youth of the world that you can have everything you want, but you’ve got to step outside your comfort zone for a minute.” Another pause during his daily grind that he jokes about that is a rare luxury is that occasionally he does sleep as well as make time for his three rescue dogs who he’s absolutely crazy about. “They run my life and this is not a joke by the way. I have a dog masseuse who comes to the house and give them a massage. Yes, that’s how crazy I am about them and that’s no lie [laughs]. I’ve partnered with the Humane Society and it was a way for me to tell people that there are 300 million street dogs in the world that are struggling for survival and being able to promote that on a social media platform and make people aware is important. If you don’t use your position to make a difference in this world then you’re a “jackass”. My dogs, animals in general, are everything to me so I’ll do whatever I can.” Rossi’s motto has always been about constantly trying to be better than he was the day before and finding new ways of making the world a better place. This motto should be instilled in everyone who wants to pursue their hopes and dreams.

BRAD’S BUZZ WORDS BY BRAD LIBERTI

The Toronto Film Festival Venice and Cannes might be dripping with glamour, and Sundance awash in hipster cred, but it’s the T.O.’s Film Fest that routinely anoints future Best Picture Oscar-winners (12 Years A Slave, Argo, The Artist, The King’s Speech). This time, The Judge, with Robert Downy Jr. and Robert Duvall kicks everything off, while A Little Chaos, starring Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman closes the festivities out, but in between, audiences will get their first glimpses of Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz in Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, Reese Witherspoon as a heroin addict turned hiker in Wild, and Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones as Mr. and Mrs. Steven Hawking in The Theory Of Everything. So put away that cosplay gear because Oscar season has officially begun!

Season Premieres Ok, My Netflix queue is empty. I’ve become well versed in the petty squabbles of cable reality TV. And now I’m officially exhausted from trying to feign interest in so-called ‘buzzy’ Network summer series (hello, Mistresses). Needless to say, I’m ready for school year faves like The Big Bang Theory, Scandal, The Good Wife, The Goldbergs, Blacklist, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine to return with all new episodes. After all, a man can only take so much of Guy’s Grocery Games before he cracks.

The View Yes, I watch The View… At least I did during the 2006-2007 season when everyone’s favorite former Queen of Nice turned lightning rod for controversy, Rosie O’Donnell, barreled into the studios armed with nothing but a healthy dose of liberal politics and Long Island manners. But then again, in the 15+ years of the show, no host has been nearly as trainwreck-y, or even remotely as compelling (sorry Joy and Whoopi). Heck, she even managed to make Elizabeth Hasselback seem interesting.

Kirsten Dunst Sure she’s been famous since she was 9, names Brad Pitt as her first onscreen kiss, and got to prance around Versailles in Marie Antoinette’s finest, but it still seems like Kirsten Dunst so often grabs the short end of stick. That’s because while she continually delivers arresting performances in off the beaten path gems (All Good Things, Melancholia, Upside Down, Bachelorette), the Golden Globe Nominee has yet to achieve the same level of prestige as peers like Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams, or the universal appeal of current “it” girls like J.Law and Emma Stone. Perhaps this month’s well-received The Two Faces of January, in which she stars opposite Viggo Mortensen and Oscar Isaac will change all of that, but even if it doesn’t, I’ll still remain eternally Team Kiki D.

Delirious (Boneless) - Steve Aoki Feat. Kid Ink, Chris Lake & Tujamo Why this smokin’ jam wasn’t the song of the summer is beyond me, but with more and more fans falling under the spell of its irresistible backbeat, it looks like Aoki might just have an Autumn pop hit on his hands. Now hand me a glow stick cause I’m ready to go ham in here!

SPEED ROUND! When was the last time you...Cried? At my Grandpa Jim’s funeral six months ago. Had one of the best meals of your life? I literally just ate peanut butter French toast and a fried chicken benedict. It’s a contender, it’s a contender. Rocked out to a song in the car by yourself? That’s a daily routine. Geeked out? I did recently download a song from the Hobbit soundtrack.

BLAIR REDFORD KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT THE ART OF SEDUCTION. THAT’S BECAUSE HE MAY HAVE PICKED UP A FEW THINGS WHILE PLAYING MALE ESCORT SIMON ON THE SIZZLING SEDUCTION, WHICH PREMIERED THIS SUMMER ON USA. THE GEORGIA NATIVE AND SOAP VET HAS KEPT HIMSELF BUSY (AND IN SHAPE) WITH SIMILARLY SCINTILLATING ROLES IN THE PAST (SEE: SWITCHED AT BIRTH AND THE LYING GAME), AND HE’S SHOWING NO SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN. WELL, MAYBE IF IT’S FOR SOME PEANUT BUTTER FRENCH TOAST...

37

We rarely see characters like Simon (a male escort) in film and television. What kind of research went into playing him? I started making my girlfriend pay me. Just kidding. Besides being very seductive, Simon is a guy who’s very attentive to the needs of others. Did you learn anything from him? I think I’ve learned the most from studying the Neal/Grace relationship and pondering on how you keep a partnership strong after so many years. In fact, my thoughts on that probably mirror Simon’s within the story. What do you think is the most important rule of relationships? I think each person has to be teaching the other one something all the time.

You should be stronger together, as a team. If you find you don’t respect your partner’s opinions and advice you’re going to have problems in the long term. You boast on Twitter that you can “shoot the fleas off a dog’s back from 500 yards.” Please elaborate. Well, it is a quote from one of my favorite movies, Back to the Future Part III, but I use the phrase personally referring to my accuracy with my bow and arrow. Best summer memory from this year: I was surprised with a trip to the lake for some fly boarding on my birthday. It’s a relatively new water sport that’s as close as your going to come to flying like Iron Man.Just kidding.

In an attempt to establish a connection and build a relationship with Kai’s Cambodian Chinese mother, Junn (veteran actress PeiPei Cheng), Richard hires a translator (Naomi Christie, below) and visits the retirement community where she lives. It is there where we’re introduced to Alan (Peter Bowles), the Brit who finds himself smitten with Junn. While Bowles offers some much-needed comic relief, he also has his chance to shine in a poignant scene that subtly comments on a different kind of loss. The story also finds an unexpected friendship develop between Richard and his translator,

Vann. Christie quietly throws herself into the fray. Overall, the film delicately observes both Richard and Junn’s difficulties in trying to connect with one another without a common language -- Junn never approved of Richard whose patience gets tested -- but soon enough, they begin to piece together memories of a man they both loved. Flashbacks seamlessly reflect on Kai’s struggle to come out to his mother and Junn’s reliving of the fateful day that took away her only child. hey soon start to avoid him, which is unsettling for Zach. He digs around a bit and finds out why: Beth has come back from the dead. Only catch is, she isn’t aware that she died. Her parents want Zach to go along with it and never let her outside. His main concern is her hunger -- and if she wants to eat him. What starts off as a dream come true soon turns to a nightmare. The film is chock-full of comedians, including a surprisingly funny Dane DeHaan, who’s subtle and completely emotes his inner dialogue simply with a glance or a stare. Plaza plays up the innocence at first and then morphs into her more zombielike character with zeal. Never getting too campy with it, she plays it just right.

Life After Beth is loaded with dark and heavy humor -- Zach’s brother Kyle

(Matthew Gray Gubler) brings a bit of crazy to the film as the neighborhood security guard with a penchant for guns. And even Anna Kendrick has a small role as Zach’s childhood friend who returns from college only to be accosted by Beth. Baena manages to turn a great idea into a personal, one-on-one zombie experience, contemplating on how one could right life’s wrongs. However, it eventually falls into a pit of familiar zombie flick tropes. More of the returning dead! End-of-the-world danger! So much for the quirky intimacy it began with.

Life After Beth is a valiant effort that eventually loses a bit of its own life force. RATING: 

We talked by phone and before we’d started, Stephen admitted that he hasn’t really done a lot of interviews yet, even though he’s had big roles in NBC’s Bandstand show American Dreams, and as ‘Wade’ in the film Water For Elephants. So, in consideration of that fact – which will change soon enough – I asked what he’s doing now, but also some of those basic, ‘getting to know you’ questions that he hadn’t been asked yet. His answers showed himself to be open, fun, and proud to be representing his home state.

So, Stephen, you’ve been shooting in Mexico all summer. What are you working on? ST: It’s this EPIC miniseries for the History Channel called Texas Rising, which will come out next year. I play ‘Gator’, a guy from Louisiana who joins the Texas Rangers after the fall of the Alamo. The story follows the Texas revolution and the role the Rangers played in its independence. Who else is involved? ST: It’s just an amazing, huge cast! It stars Bill Paxton, Brendan Fraser, Ray Liotta, Trevor Donovan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Joe Egender, Johnathon Schaech, Olivier Martinez, Chris McDonald, and many, many more. Roland Joffe is directing and the producers made the award-winning miniseries Hatfields and McCoys. It has been and continues to be an amazing experience and I am extremely honored to work with such a talented group of actors and crew. Your character ‘Wayne’, on Anger Management, is a darkly funny, born-again murderer in prison group therapy. Is there anyone from your life that you base him on? ST: I really wanted to do something different with the role. I didn’t want to look like the stereotypical serial killer. When I showed up to the audition, there were quite a few huge, tattooed, and mean looking guys. And there I was this skinny redneck who didn’t really look scary at all. Suddenly, my dad came to mind, and I remembered when I was in a lot of trouble growing up, he would get extremely calm and look intensely into my eyes and tell me how much trouble I was in and what my punishment would be. It scared the crap out of me! So when I entered into the audition room, I emulated that intensity and stillness with a strong accent (like my dad’s) and didn’t break eye contact with the reader. The scene was very funnily written, though, so it all came together very well. And the rest, as they say, is history. What is the energy like on the Anger Management set? ST: I absolutely love (and currently miss) working on the show. It is like a big family that supports everything you 45

do, on and off set. Everyone asks how my family is and is genuinely interested in knowing what’s up in my world. And I’m the same with them. Working with Charlie Sheen and the other actors in my prison scenes has been an absolute pleasure. Honestly, they are some of the best actors and crew I have ever worked with. So what first made you want to become an actor? ST: I was a freshman in high school. I had done a few plays already, but one experience I had at an audition changed my life. It was for The Hound of the Baskervilles in our high school auditorium, which could hold about 1000 people. All the lights were off and there was one spotlight onstage. I entered that light, started my audition piece, and became someone else for a couple of minutes. It was the greatest feeling I had ever known. That was the moment I knew. I kept at it and the next year I got my first big part on-stage as ‘Jonathan Harker’ in Dracula. Your child-hood buddy and fellow actor Kevin Alejandro said “fruitopia” was when he knew you’d be a good actor. Can you elaborate on “fruitopia”? ST: (Laughs) Oh Jesus!! Well, the story I think he’s talking about has nothing to do with professional acting but it did get me out of a ticket in high school. We were drinking some wine at a friend’s house, but had to leave to make curfew, so we hopped into my car to drive home. I wasn’t drunk but was definitely underage. As we were driving down the road, Kevin jokingly pushed my steering wheel and I swerved into the next lane...and in front of an oncoming car. Unfortunately it was a cop car so they spun around and lit us up. When they pulled us over, the officer said he smelled alcohol, and got me to get out of the car for a drunk test. He asked me why he smelled alcohol and I replied “Oh that, that’s Fruitopia!” (the fruit drink). Well, just as I was convincing him, Kevin flew out of the car and said, “Do me! Do me!! I want a drunk test too!!” The officers freaked out and started shouting and I had to use some serious acting skills to convince them that we both weren’t

drunk and that it was just Fruitopia on our breath. Luckily, we got away with a warning. While you were honing your acting chops, you worked as a carpenter on the home improvement series Clean House. What’s the most memorable experience you encountered when going into strangers’ homes for that show? ST: Working on that show opened up a whole world of oddities and interesting characters. From sex toys falling on my head to finding half-full pizza boxes that were over a year old. Once, during “Messiest Home in America”, we found a cat box that was overflowing with poop and then the owner said that their cat had died two years before. Luckily I worked with an amazing crew and we were able to clean it all up and transform their houses for the way, way better. You also worked as a carpenter for a few seasons at the scare event Dark Harbor, which is located on the reputedly haunted ocean liner The Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. Did you experience any supernatural events while there? ST: Oh, YES! I’ve had several small weird things happen like moving shadows and creaking noises, but there is one event that stands out way above all those. One night, my friend Adam and I were working in an area that was empty. It was just the two of us there. No other workers or ship personnel. While we were zip-tying some suitcases together for stage dressing, I accidentally tapped the ceiling with one of the pieces of luggage and a light began to blink. Not in a loose wire kind of way, but in a freaky, ghostly way. Being that the ship was extremely old we didn’t think much about it and finished securing the suitcases. We left to go get more luggages and when we came back a few minutes later, all of the suitcases were strewn across the room and the zip ties were broken. And to top it off, the light wasn’t flickering any more. As freaked out as we were, we wanted to try and capture something on film, so we put a phone in a hidden spot hit ‘record’, and left. We returned a few minutes later and the recording had been ‘stopped’ after just a few seconds. Needless to September 2014 - BELLO

say we hightailed it out of there and didn’t return until the morning! What’s your home life like? ST: I have the most amazing, funny, talented and supportive wife, Ashley, and we have one whip smart, silly, and beautiful son named Killian. They are the best things that have ever happened to me in my life. I owe all of my success and happiness to those two wonderful people. Anything else you’re working on now? It’s a sort of dark “good vs. evil” superhero series that we’re shopping around to networks and new media. Watch for it. It’s gonna be great! SECRETS & LIES (ABC) Who knows how this remake of a popular Australian drama involving the mysterious death of a fouryear-old in a small town will pan out, but I’m picking it for its trifecta of 90s awesomeness. Yes folks, the ABC drama stars grunge goddess and eternal baddass Juliet Lewis and petulant frat-boyturned-smoldering-brooder Ryan Philippe. And if that weren’t enough, it shares its name with the beloved 1996 Oscar-nominated Mike Leigh film. I’m so excited I could make a mix tape! - Brad L.

MUST-TWEET TV: Changing Television, 140 Characters at a Time BY ADRIENNE MCILVAINE

RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU’VE EVER FRANTICALLY REFRESHED YOUR TWITTER FEED DURING A COMMERCIAL BREAK FOR SLEEPY HOLLOW, OR HAD TO REWIND PRETTY LITTLE LIARS BECAUSE YOU WERE TOO BUSY CRAFTING THE PERFECT TWEET.

T

he little blue bird is the Internet’s watercooler, and in an era of increasingly fragmented audiences, Twitter’s communal space is more valuable than ever. And TV networks have taken notice; these short and sweet messages are an important tool in deciding which shows have struck a chord and which have just struck out.

T.W.W.T. (Tweeting While Watching TV) isn’t exactly a new phenomenon--as early as 2008 shows like Psych and The Game were benefiting from fans’ Twitter excitement. Nielsen, which has measured audience viewing habits since 1950, recently introduced Nielsen Social, a new service that measures Twitter mentions and interactions for over 250 network and cable shows. Right now, there’s little overlap between which shows are highly-tweeted and 49

those that are highly-rated, but the Nielsen metrics are a useful way of breaking down the service’s chaotic chatter. This new focus on audience engagement means that the old model of making a show and putting it out there just isn’t enough anymore; if a show airs and no one tweets about it, is it even on? Scandal was a modest success in its first two seasons, but when ABC noticed fans freaking out online they mounted a Twitter campaign that strengthened its connection to the show’s devoted fanbase and resulted in a massive increase in viewership. Now it’s standard practice for actors, writers and producers to live-tweet episodes, share behind-the-scenes information, and come up with their own hashtags to drive even more engagement. And when the public is engaged, it’s like a flood being unleashed. As perennially

on-the-bubble Community lingered in limbo after its fourth season, a throwaway joke from Abed became the rallying cry of #sixseasonsandamovie, which, thanks to Yahoo!’s surprise renewal of the now-cancelled show, may actually happen. Devoted fans of the supernatural Sleepy Hollow have made no secret of their desire to see the time-traveling Ichabod and no-nonsense Abbie pair up (#ichabbie), while long-suffering followers of the messy True Blood have packed a lot of vitriol into 140 characters. Twitter is the great equalizing force between creators and consumers, breaking down traditional barriers of power and influence in ways that will give us what we all want... Better TV.

THE NINJA TURTLES ARE BACK. THEY’RE BIGGER, AND BETTER, AND HERE TO SAVE AMERICA’S MOST FAMOUS CITY, NEW YORK, FROM IRREVERSIBLE DESTRUCTION.

FOR

A PARTICULAR CANADIAN BOY, THIS IS A DREAM COME TRUE. VANCOUVER NATIVE, NOEL FISHER, COMES TO THE SILVER SCREEN LIKE HE’S NEVER DONE BEFORE. HE’S GREEN AND WELL OVER SEVEN FEET TALL. THAT’S RIGHT, FISHER PLAYS ONE OF THE TURTLES IN THIS SUMMER’S BLOCKBUSTER, TEENAGE

MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, AND HE ASSURES US, PLAYING THIS CHARACTER IS NOT SOMETHING HE’S TAKEN LIGHTLY.

“I grew up with Ninja Turtles,” he says of the world famous reptiles. “The animated show in particular was a big part of my childhood, and the first movie especially was a turning point for me [Laughs]. I have a lot of hours logged in my backyard pretending to be a ninja turtle.” Learning how to be a Michael Bay Ninja Turtle required several hours logged elsewhere. Luckily for the Shameless star, it was one of his favorite parts of the shoot. In order to pull off these larger than life sequences, producers hired a special team of professionals to train the turtles (I mean the actors) where they would undergo hours of training, three to four times a week. “They’re called 8711, and they’re unreal. They’re so good at what they do. Almost every big action movie you see, it’s probably these guys. Even their name is dope. They sound hardcore, and they really are,” he says to me. “We all really wanted to be as familiar with our weapons and knowing how to use our bodies as much as possible. Because, you know, they’re ninja turtles. A big part of it is “ninja,” and I’m very far from a ninja.” When you have Jonathan Liebesman (Battles Los Angeles, Wrath of The 51

Titans) sitting in the Director’s chair, it’s safe to say that hyper-real action sequences will not be kept to a minimum. “I definitely had a stunt double. You don’t hire 8711 and not have stunt doubles. What’s cool about the technology used in the film is you don’t have to have a stunt double that necessarily looks like you. It can just be the person who is the best at what you need them to be doing for that particular character. Something that I think people are going to like about this version is that they gave all the turtles their unique fighting style. Mikey’s (Michelangelo) got a little bit of beat boy in him. It shows. So, they have him doing some of that in the fighting style. The technology really allows you to have the opportunity to give a more unique flavor to each turtle.” If a beat-boxing Michelangelo doesn’t have you racing to theaters, the film’s all-star cast will. Megan Fox, Will Arnett, and William Fichtner are just a few of the faces you’ll see throughout the film. And that’s not even including the ninja turtles themselves. Rounding out the rest of the turtles is Alan Ritchson as Raphael, funny-man Johnny Knoxville as Leonardo, and Jeremy Howard as none other than Donatello.

Despite his own star power, Fisher couldn’t help but geek out when learning whom his cast-mates would be. “As soon as I found out William Fichtner was going to be in the movie, I was really, really excited. He’s one of those guys that have been in everything, and he’s great in everything.” As for Will Arnett, ninja turtles isn’t the first thing you think of when mentioning the actor, but Fisher assures us he couldn’t fit more in place within the world of the film. “I’m a massive Arrested Development fan. Will, he plays one of the funniest characters I’ve ever seen. It fits right in because he brings a good balance. The world is so fantastical. You’re dealing with these huge talking ninja turtles. And he’s able to bring that factor of what’s even happening right now. That kind of general attitude that one would genuinely have.” For one special scene, production shut down [the] world famous Time Square. “I bet the logistics in doing that must’ve been pretty intense,” says Fisher. But being the home of hundreds of Hollywood films, the empire state welcomed such a mighty request. “Filming in the city was great. For many September 2014 - BELLO

reasons, it was the perfect place to film.” Fisher says New Yorkers weren’t very privy to the madness-taking place around them during production. In fact, they welcomed the weird, like only New York knows how. “It was kind of funny actually. We were walking [a]round in really, really odd outfits. These grey leotard type things, with all these triangles on them. White make up on with over 100 dots on us. So, we looked very bizarre, but it’s New York. No one cared. I remember specifically, we were walking down the Financial District one day going to set. We’re passing by a lot of people, and we maybe got, like, three double takes out of all the people we passed. It’s New York.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seems to have all the ingredients for massive summer success, and Noel Fisher is backing me up 100 percent. Producer/ Director, Liebesman, have modernized and gone deeper into all aspects of the characters that audiences like. They’ve expanded on everything, and thanks to motion capture, audiences world round will actually see what the turtles are doing. “Mikey, he’s the same. Fun, loving and laid back, even in these high-stress level situations that they happen to find themselves in. He’s protective of his brothers too. All those human character traits, they play with that, and they really make it a part of the turtles.” It’s one thing to hear this from an actor who has starred in the film. But it’s different when said actor is a fan himself. He too is rooting for a great turnout. Not only in the box office, but to true ninja turtle fans worldwide. “The action’s gotta be real. It’s gotta be gritty, and maybe even dirty. While also making sure you’re keeping that heart that ninja turtle fans love so much and that has been such a big part of the franchise.” And there you have it; spoken like a true fan. Or beat-boxing towering mutant ninja turtle. Whichever works.

HOW I BECAME A

ZOMBIE

AT COMIC-CON

BY HIKO MITSUZUKA

Comic-Con has become a summer tradition for me, much like sleepaway camp -except I don’t outgrow it. Instead of sleeping in a room on a lumpy bunkbed, I crash on my friend’s couch (forget those overpriced hotel rates!), and instead of eating slop in a mess hall, I have my morning routine of picking up a grande coffee and bagel at the nearest Starbucks and taking an 8-minute drive downtown before spending a good chunk of time looking for a parking space.

And I still love it. I get a kick out of seeing the imaginative cosplay. And the families! It warms my heart to see a parental unit of geeks and their offspring venture out onto the exhibition floor, especially in a group themed costume. Just try to walk past a mom and dad dressed as the Ghostbusters with their Slimer toddler without going “Awww.” But this year was different. For my eighth visit to the annual pop culture fest, I was going to become a member of the living dead. Greg Nicotero, the man behind all of those gruesome zombie transformations on AMC’s The Walking Dead, was on deck at Comic-Con to give a live special-effects demonstration in front of a crowd of fans inside the Petco Interactive Park. Some lucky guests were even ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com

treated to a gory makeover on stage... including yours truly. With the help of Courtyard Marriott Hotels, who hosted the festivities with their Mobile Pod Experience, I got a chance to sit in a make-up chair and be transformed into a decaying Walker, courtesy of LA-based artist Greg Solomon, who just wrapped on Insurgent, the sequel this year’s dystopian saga Divergent. He did a bang-up job. Within minutes after walking through the crowds, I was stopped twice and asked to take a photo with a few passers-by. I kept my zombie face on for nearly 6 hours and loved getting looks wherever I went. “We’re just helping people enjoy their time and their experience,” said Nina Herrera-Davila, Director of Public Relations for the Maryland-based hotel group. “And with Comic-Con, what better way than to help people take cosplay to the next level!” Speaking of cosplay, The Walking Dead’s very own Norman Reedus also showed up to judge a contest in which a king and queen were crowned and given the opportunity to meet Game of Thones author George R.R. Martin.

she was “wide-eyed and extremely excited” to be amidst the chaos. (She also happens to be a proud Game of Thrones fangirl: “I am Khaleesi at heart, Mother of Dragons!”)

With this being her first Comic-Con, Herrera-Davila also told me that

“Courtyard is a hotel brand, so you wouldn’t imagine they’d be out at

something like this,” she later admitted while I did my best to keep my head still as fake blood began to trickle from my nose. “But I have a feeling we may be coming back.”

CLEAN SLATE:

Trading In The Old With The New BY ADRIENNE MCILVAINE

Instead of getting ready to go back to school, we’re preparing for something way better: new fall TV. And just like cleaning out our closet to make room for sweet new clothes, we’re going through our DVR and tossing out our old threadbare shows for four more new series we’re excited to watch. Take note... Join: Z Nation

photo courtesy of NBC photo courtesy of FOX

With a sixth season on the horizon, Modern Family regularly snatches Emmys from more deserving actors and TV shows and now stands as the old guard of un-traditional families. So ABC must be hedging its bets with Fresh off the Boat, a singlecamera comedy based on Asian-American chef Eddie Huang’s 2013 memoir about growing up in ‘90s Orlando as the hip-hop obsessed son of Taiwanese immigrants. The media-savvy Huang is funny, brash and totally unapologetic, so we’re looking forward to seeing this big personality on the small screen.

Parks and Recreation, NBC’s Little Show That Could, begins its seventh and final season this month. And while we’re sad to say goodbye to the sweet screwballs of Pawnee, everyone’s married with kids now and we miss mean April. Which is why we’re happy to replace it with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, now starting its second season (so we’re cheating a little). The Emmy-winning cop show shares writers and producers with the politically incorrect Parks and has the same eccentric workplace vibe and nutty but lovable characters that gives it a permanent spot on our DVR.

Vote out: Parks and Recreation

The Walking Dead may be the highest rated show on cable, but after five seasons of slow-moving stories (and Carl being annoying), we’re ready to move on, and SyFy’s Z Nation looks like it could be the adrenaline-fueled zombie rush we’re craving. It follows a ragtag group, which includes Harold Perrineau (Lost), Tom Everett Scott (Southland) and DJ Qualls (Road Trip), tasked with transporting from New York to California the only known human to survive a zombie bite. Because nothing beats a road trip where running out of gas isn’t the worst thing that could happen.

Once Upon a Time has a great premise--fairytale characters living in the real world--that’s become bogged down by cheesy CGI and a habit of rehabilitating characters only to tear them back down (ahem, Regina). Counterprogrammed by NBC, Emerald City sounds like the perfect antidote. A dark re-telling of the classic Frank L. Baum novels starring a 20-year-old Dorothy Gale and warring kingdoms in the Land of Oz, we’re hoping for a Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan-ized version.

THE TRUTH ABOUT

VINESSA

SHAW WORDS BY SCOTT YOUNGBAUER

PHOTOS BY JOSH REED

THE ‘RAY DONOVAN’ ACTRESS CHATS WITH SCOTT YOUNGBAUER ABOUT GETTING DOWN AND DANGEROUS, LESSONS SHE LEARNED FROM STANLEY KUBRICK...AND REMEMBERING ‘HOCUS POCUS’ 21 YEARS LATER. Vinessa Shaw only works with the best, or at least she tries to.

let alone with such a talented pool of directors.

Starring opposite Liev Schreiber on the Showtime’s Ray Donovan is no exception. Shaw plays the intelligent Kate McPherson in a season-long arc as a journalist who’s tracking down the truth about the murder of Sully Sullivan.

Shaw notes her unique experience with Kubrick in Eyes Wide Shut as the turning point of her acting career. After all, not many actors can say they have been directed by an auteur (Shaw memorably played opposite Tom Cruise as a prostitute named Domino).

Having caught up with Shaw while she’s on break from shooting the last episode of season 2, I learn that Shaw has reveled in the role of Kate, which involved doing research on real-life Pulitzer Prize finalists for advice. “She’s kind of riding the path of danger and exposing the truth,” she tells me about playing the fearless Kate. “Treading this fine line of justice meeting danger.” As a child actor who successfully branched out into an adult career, Shaw’s IMDB page shows a steady flow of roles over a 20-year period that includes working with directors like Steven Soderbergh, James Mangold, Kathryn Bigelow, and Stanley Kubrick. For any actor who’s pounded the Los Angeles pavement it says something when you manage to continually work in movies and TV since young adulthood, 61

“I had no idea the kind of depth and process that goes into creating a character until I did Eyes Wide Shut,” she reflects. “Working with Kubrick and his attention to detail made me realize how I can do that for myself as an actor.” Up until her work on the film, Shaw was unsure if she wanted to continue acting. She vividly remembers Kubrick telling her that she had some real talent and was looking forward to seeing where her career would take her. How many actors can say they’ve had the privilege of being given a pep talk by the cinematic genius behind 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining? While not quite as historic as her work with Kubrick, Shaw is perhaps best

known by a generation for a role this writer was dying to ask her about 1993’s Disney cult classic Hocus Pocus. The teenage Shaw made the Halloween movie with Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker and is still in awe of the whole experience. She continues to have fans from all walks of life that grew up watching it. “It still holds up,” she proudly says, “and it goes down in history as a classic Disney movie. I’m just excited I was a part of it. It’s funny to me, when it first came out; it was completely panned by critics. I don’t understand why it was taken so seriously.” Soon we’re chatting about personal interests. The nutshell: she has a newfound love for veganism, enjoys the works of philosopher Viktor Frankl, and is proud to be in a barbershop quartet. Easy to talk to and passionate are just a few of Shaw’s remarkable qualities. Like Kubrick’s exchange with the actress 15 years ago, I look forward to seeing where else her career will take her. - Scott Youngbauer (@oscarscott) September 2014 - BELLO

CONSIDER this a rather “Lucky 13”. Zuhair Murad, a master of couture, just celebrated his 13th year showing in Paris. Somehow, in the midst of a demanding production schedule of pret a porter, accessories, and bridal lines, the Lebanese designers’ couture collections continually become more and more striking. Just look to his bevy of celebrity cleintele (Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Alessandra Ambrosio, Taylor Swift, Sofia Vergara) as proof that perfection comes in the form of his gowns. His Fall 2014 Couture collection looked too complicated; geometry and modern architecture in the intricate beadwork for inspiration, in a palette of bold solids, remniscent of exotic sunsets. He scales new heights in couture and surely, the red carpet. Thirteen going on classic.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

“Diverse influences,

focused design” WORDS BY STEVEN CARVER

PHOTOS BY MARIO TORRES

SOME PEOPLE FALL INTO THEIR CAREERS BY CHANCE, WHILE OTHERS WORK HARD TO RISE THROUGH THE RANKS. WHEN IT COMES TO CHARLES ELLIOTT HARBISON, IT’S A MIX OF THE TWO.

F

ounder and creative director of an eponymously named women’s fashion label, Harbison might have had an early inkling in his childhood, but he first had to pay his dues in the classroom. While studying fine arts, painting and textiles, he spent his undergraduate summers interning at NYC-based design houses like Michael Kors and Jack Spade. After holding positions at Luca Luca and Billy Reid (not to mention attending the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York), he founded his own label in 2013. Designed for the woman who embraces a feminine/masculine paradox, the designs speak to the softness of a woman’s curves while paying attention to strong tailoring, graphic prints and unexpected textures. It’s apparent that Harbison’s brief scholastic background in architecture influences his modern designs with clean lines and a sense of balanced proportions. While working on his next collection for fashion week, Bello was able to sneak in some questions to the man behind the eponymous line that’s on everyone’s must-watch list. If Vogue is lauding his work, it’s time to pay attention to this talent.

How would you describe the Harbison woman? I love women who embrace their contradictions. My client is the girl who wants to navigate her life in refined, luxurious sportswear where she not only communicates her vulnerability but also her power and intelligence. This is how the Harbison woman dresses and lives: in suiting, separates, trousers, brogues, layers, intriguing silhouettes. There’s a lot of tailoring in the line, so why focus on women’s and not men’s wear? The breadth of possibilities in women’s wear allows me to fuse my love of art and pattern with my love for utilitarianism and uniformity in a fun way. Women are amazing in how they embody seemingly contradictory elements: strength and fragility, hardness and softness. A tailored jacket with a pajama pant, a cocktail blouse with a mannish trouser – those are beautiful images. How do you differ contemporaries?

from

your

You know, the collection is evolving and maturing, but there are certain fundamental design/wardrobe elements and signatures that I’ve loved for a long time: suits, overcoats, uniform dressing, [a sense of] ease. My art studies

being under the umbrella of Bauhaus modernism and my experience working for some talented American designers sets me apart, hence the color blocking and utilitarianism you see in the collection.

Who are the people you look up to? Fellow designers, family/friends, artists…?

The challenges are many for young designers, but they can largely rest on “cash” - the start-up life. Also, there are lots of variables to be managed in garment production, but I make it work.

There is a plethora of women around me who embody the modern, powerful, multidimensional ethos of Harbison who keep me inspired and focused. I look up to them. But everything inspires me: art, literature, music, conversations, and moments. Most of all, I connect to the women I love.

Was it always your dream to work in fashion?

Where would you like to see Harbison in the next few years?

I knew at a young age that I loved art and beautiful things. Art was a means of expression for me, and there was always a positive reaction to the things I created, the pictures I drew, etc. I was also a bit obsessive. My mom tells a story of me lining up my matchbox cars around the house and having an absolute tantrum if anyone accidentally interrupted their perfect line-up (i.e. my dad)! That led to initially study

My agenda for Harbison is to continue serving my women by expanding into as many product categories as possible: accessories (shoes, bags, scarves, and jewelry), bespoke suiting, and accessible basics. In addition to a strong direct-to-client business around the country, I also want to have strong department store partnerships and an e-commerce presence to expand the collection’s international reach.

Any challenges that you come across in the industry?

Yet, it’s a cutthroat industry and everyone wants to be on top. Known for costeffective clothing for the masses, H&M and Target needed to remain competitive with their contemporaries. What to do? A novel concept: rather than copy couture houses, they collaborated with them. While some produced variations of their signature looks, others created wholly new collections.

But while those aforementioned mass market chains go for cheap chic, the mid-market was left behind. Banana Republic quickly realized this trend wasn’t going anywhere. Outreaching to designers who with signature aesthetics (like Daniella Issa Helayel at Issa and L’Wren Scott), each took turns putting their stamp on American sportswear classics. Now, Roland Mouret will demonstrate how he can incorporate Banana Republic’s Sloan fabric (a unique, bi-stretch textile) into his signature, figure-flattering silhouettes. The result is a series of dresses and separates in a classic palate that are meant to be worn day-to-night and at any social occasion. Influences of his signature looks are apparent as is his talent for

tailoring and draping fabric on the female form. No matter the collaboration, there’s no consensus as to what makes it a success, except for the sell-through. What do designers get out of this? An uptick of sales for their signature line (Alexander McQueen), media buzz reminds the public of those who recently faltered (Versace), while others get a bump in recognition (Rodarte), or a break from the confines of designing for others (Karl Lagerfeld). Ultimately, it’s the consumer who remains the unequivocal winner. They get high style for low prices; essential for those on a budget. And like Mouret’s slinky Galaxy dress, it’s all about the right fit at the right time.

And the designers were A-listers of the fashion world. H&M typically partnered with icons (Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Roberto Cavalli, Versace, Lanvin, Marni, Isabel Marant, Alexander Wang), while Target focused on indies (Isaac Mizrahi, Rodarte, Alexander McQueen, Anna Sui, Jean Paul Gaultier, Proenza Schouler, Missoni, Jason Wu). It wasn’t about utilizing the fame of actors, singers or athletes to sell merchandise, but actual style stars to give the retailers credibility where there wasn’t any before. PATRICIA MORALES IS A HAIR STYLIST AND JEWELRY DESIGNER. AMONG OTHER THINGS, SHE’S KNOWN FOR THE ICONIC “HAIR BOW” CREATED FOR LADY GAGA AND THE BRAIDED HEADPHONES DESIGNED FOR FERGIE. ORIGINALLY FROM TEXAS, SHE NOW DIVIDES HER TIME BETWEEN LOS ANGELES AND NYC. YOU’VE MOST LIKELY SEEN HER WORK IN VANITY FAIR, HARPERS BAZAAR, GQ AND V MAGAZINE.

I started doing hair when I was seven. I would practice different hairstyles on my dolls for Christmas, Thanksgiving and other holidays. At the age of ten I started to practice cutting hair on my friends.

ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com

When did you start designing jewelry? I have always looked for ways to incorporate more than just hair into the hairstyles that I do professionally, so when I started designing jewelry in 2012, it really felt like an extension to what I was already doing. What and who inspires you? New York is always a lasting inspiration to me and consequently, street style is a strong influence in my designs. In a broader sense, music and fashion are strong influences and I am always amazed at what my artist friends are working on. What are your favorite hair trends for the season?

I’m really enjoying working with my Hair Jewelry. :) I did a hairstyle on my muse BLANDA EGGENSCHWILER. It was an upside down french braid that stopped on the top center of the head and joined by another braid that started at the front of her hairline. I finished the style by using 2 of my 18K Gold hair jewelry pieces; one on each side of the braid. We got so much press for it and it became a major hit. What are your goals for your collection? Currently, I’m working on my upcoming presentation at New York Fashion Week for Fall 2014. Selling my pieces in Los Angeles and New York is the dream and Paris is the icing on the cake :). 94

FALL BEAUTY TRENDS BY NICOLE WALMSLEY

September is our Fall Fashion Issue and we’re getting a first look into the changing season. Beauty Trends are also a main focus on the runways and blogs. This year we saw unexpected pops of color and a warmer palette. There was also a bit of throwback to the 90’s with grunge and plaid as well as polished hair and major lashes reminding us of the 60’s. One of the coolest fall trends for hair this season is 1960’s inspired hair. To achieve maximum height and volume Oribe’s “Grandiose” Hair Plumping Mousse adds volume and thickness, but leaves hair touchable and soft. The signature combination of ingredients including Watermelon, Lychee and Edelweiss Flower Extracts smells amazing while protecting and conditioning hair.

Fall always calls for deeper, richer colors. For the lips I love “Everlasting”, a cool garnet by Kevyn Aucoin. It’s a velvety smooth, matt finish with serious staying power. Wear this with minimal makeup on the rest of the face. Some mascara, a swipe of blush and you’re ready to go.

www.bergdorfgoodman.com

www.neimanmarcus.com

I love the easy, messy, smudgy eye that was all over the fall runways. It’s a bit grungy, a bit rock star, and totally wearable. ARDENCY INN MODSTER Smooth Ride Supercharged Eyeliner in “Black” is great for blending and has a long lasting finish.

“Matt About You” by Essie “instantly transforms any nail color from high gloss to sophisticated matte”. Genius. www.ulta.com

www.sephora.com

Velour Lashes are 100% cruelty-free natural mink. With a lightweight feathery feel they add just a much drama as you desire. Try a medium impact lash like “Doll Me Up” for a fall favorite; the 60’s vibe. For the full effect, add a lower lash too!

WORDS BY CHRISTI KASSITY PHOTOS BY MARC CARTWRIGHT IF YOU’RE A FAN OF PSYCHO-THRILLER ELI ROTH’S WORK, THEN YOU ARE NO DOUBT FAMILIAR WITH HIS LEADING LADY, LORENZA IZZO. YOU WOULD HAVE SEEN HER ALONG SIDE ROTH IN THE 2012 THRILLER AFTERSHOCK, AS WELL AS GUEST STARRING ON ROTH’S HIT NETFLIX SERIES HEMLOCK GROVE. YOU CAN SEE HER AGAIN IN HIS LATEST THRILLER, THE GREEN INFERNO. THE PROJECTS HAVE STARTED TO LINE UP FOR THE CHILEAN ACTRESS, AND HER TRAJECTORY IS SET FOR THE STARS. DESPITE HER BUSYING DAYS, LORENZA WAS KIND ENOUGH TO SIT DOWN AND ANSWER A FEW OF MY QUESTIONS.

What were your thoughts when you first read the script for The Green Inferno?

biggest challenges you had to face as an actress?

“I had to do it! I had never read anything quite like it, it was an adventure I had to be part of. It was definitely a story that needed to be told, it involved something I’m very passionate about; rain forests are overlooked constantly and their benefits surpass anything we as humans could ever possibly construct. It was an epic tail of a young, idealistic and smart woman who wanted to change the world, but at the same time the tale told a harsh truth about a very vapid society sucked into media attention today. t was gonna be intense I thought, and hard for sure.”

“I will never forget that experience. I know I say that about every movie I make, but I don’t think I can say I’ve been surrounded by human hand-sized ants and tarantulas while shooting very emotionally and physically intense scenes, like jumping into a amazonian river and screaming my lungs out for help. I think some of the hardest challenges were getting our bodies adjusted to the heat, the food, and the insects. The jungle is a very beautiful place but it’s also very dangerous. We went very deep, farther than any film crew had ever gone, and that certainly shows on screen. However, for the cast, that entailed a certain amount of resilience and endurance (that) I personally didn’t think I had. Most of us got sick and spent days at the local hospital, but luckily we all made it

The Green Inferno, a title which refers to the Amazon rain forest, was partially shot in an actual jungle, deep in the Andes of South America. How was it filming in such an intense environment? What were some of the 99

out alive. It’s funny, I think the stories behind every scene are crazier than the actual movie, and that’s a statement.” Being born and raised in Chile, did you always know you wanted to be an actress? “Not really. I was just always the center of attention, or thought I was, or pretended I was. I was great at putting on shows with my cousin, and had a bunch of imaginary friends until my sister showed up when I was 12. Then she became my slave/assistant. In school I loved to be part of plays. I didn’t necessarily get to be the lead, in fact, I rarely got to be the lead, but I was happy being tree #4; I was just happy being part of that. I moved to Atlanta, GA, when I was 12. That was a culture shock... and back to Chile at 16... another shock. So adjusting for me was tough, acting was a good way to deal with stuff, it came natural. When I September 2014 - BELLO

finished high school I studied acting at Lee Strasberg In New York.” You first worked with Eli Roth was as a fellow actor in Aftershock, and then again with him as your director in The Green Inferno. Was the dynamic of your relationship different with him as a director? “Yes and no. It was a great thing actually, because I felt like I knew him in a very “uncomfortable” way. Acting is very unglamorous and awkward. You should know, in Aftershock, we had spent many cold nights covered in dust and blood trying to make it through a very difficult but fun shoot. Now, we had a newfound uncomfortableness that I think made it easier for us to work together; we could be more open about what we wanted from the scenes, about what he ultimately wanted to achieve, so that was great.” I read that you were in Chile during the 2010 earthquake. Many people would have difficulty reliving the experience, but you went on to co-star in Aftershock. Can you talk about your experience with the real quake and what it was like to relive the experience through Aftershock? I think it’s a testament to your strength and professionalism.

“Well thank you. For the real earthquake I was at a club that was destroyed completely, it was truly a terrifying experience, a lot of my friends ended up in hospitals and the scariest part was the dead lines. There was no communication or radio and we were cut off from the world and had no idea if a tsunami was coming. Thankfully, as a country, we have recovered from that experience and learned from our mistakes and are now fully prepared for an earthquake of that magnitude. Aftershock is a movie, and I just lived it as that. The effects were extremely realistic so it was scary and fun at at the same time.” You just had a photoshoot for us, with photographer Marc Cartwright, that was inspired by the art of Patrick Nagel. Do you prefer acting over modeling, vice versa, or do they both go hand-inhand for you? 100

“It’s funny, I like both. I guess I prefer acting because it’s more my thing; it’s my “passion” I guess. I LIVE for playing characters, people, learning about different lives. Modeling is fun but I dont think I could do it all the time. The drama however... I LIVE for the drama.” You are very present on social media. You have many followers on both Twitter and Instagram. Is it important for you to stay connected to your fans? “Funny you say fans, I’m very flattered. I started those when I had no fans, just to keep up with the world and to feed my ego a little... hehe. Now, I go through phases; I hate it or love it, and life is like that too. Twitter is great to get fast information on different things, but today you have to be smart about your sources. I guess that’s also a good thing, you have to work now; there’s so much information - good and bad - it’s like a giant turbine of different social medias throwing stuff at you. So it’s definitely important to stay connected in this new form of “connecting” with your fans. It’s because of them you get places today.” You have just wrapped production on Eli Roth’s latest thriller, Knock Knock. What can you tell us about the film? How was it working with Keanu Reeves? “It’s gonna mess with everyones heads, thats for sure. Keanu is the most down to earth guy I’ve ever met, he’s so easy to work with and such an excellent actor. I’ve never seen anybody move around and know a set like he does and also a very sweet and patient person. It was both a joy and and honor for me to work with him.” 101

ART

A MOMENT WITH... JEAN PAUL MALLOZZI INTERVIEW BY FABIO FERNANDEZ PHOTOS BY JUAN PABLO CASTRO

MEET 32 YEAR OLD ARTIST, JEAN PAUL MALLOZI. Hi JeanPaul, how does your work differentiate from everybody else’s?

Have you ever taken art lessons? Oh yeah, I went to the Road Island School of Designs. It’s one of the best art schools, I got scholarship to attend but before that it was mainly High School, where I was lucky to have a great art teacher but I’ve been interested in art since I was 6 or 7 years old.

I don’t think its one particular thing that makes it different from everyone’s. A lot of work is unique my point of view is of classical rendering figures and turning it on its head or turning a curve ball so people can see something that they recognize in a new way.

When did you create your first art commission?

Who are your idols? I wouldn’t say I have any idols but if we’re talking inspiring artist, Phil Hale is one, there’s others like Joel Sorren, Buddy Nestor, Jenny Morgan, Jeremy Geddes, Esao Andrews, Matt Dangler there’s so many but I can’t name them all. Out of those who have passed away, J.W Waterhouse and Norman Rockwell come to mind. Trying to think, there are so many haha.

I think right after college I had this commission to do 3 portraits of 3 business men. Someone recommended my name and it was a very funny thing. It was super traditional. It wasn’t very exciting but it was my first commission. What does it take to be a successful artist in this day and age? It’s on shuffle 20” x 16” Oil on board

Being tenacious is one. Humble. Not being an asshole. Or you can combine

the 3 but don’t be an asshole. It helps. It’s not about trying to be successful but in this industry like most, this is a group effort. You’re not alone. So keeping that in mind, there are lots of artist with egos but a dose of humility and treating people kindly goes along way. We all start at very little if not at zero. It helps when you’re a kind person and you don’t take that for granted. So ALWAYS have a little humility and don’t be an asshole HAHA! Have you compromised your artistic eye for business? No. I haven’t. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with collectors, private commission or Art Directors that are looking for something in particular and Bliss 36” x 24” Oil on board

they want something that is uniquely yours. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to have a dialogue with someone that wants what I am able to provide and at the same time satisfy their desire and be able to collaborate. When you’re dealing with someone who has an idea in mind, it’s also about knowing how to take directions in certain parts and if you’re having a commission done; sometimes it’s best to establish that from the very beginning because that is what I’ve been trained to do. With Art Directors you have to comply with that and be happy with what you create. I’ve been very fortunate to not be able to do that. How has technology affected the way you do art? It’s affected it in an awesome way. I’ve been able to reach a broader audience much faster. My website is platform for people to see what I do not just a gallery. To this day I’ve been able to contact Artist that I would never been able to. Just the other day I spoke with an Artist regarding what would we be doing if we didn’t have technology, probably snail mail or a phone call? It’s given us a safe distance to communicate. I’ve been able to get in touch with artist that I love, a small dialoged and we all realize we are all on the same boat or on some

sort of hurtle we’ve all overcome. We have a mutual understanding. There’s still a line threat of overcoming some sort of adversity. What or whom are you influenced by? I think, that’s a good question. I try to dig into myself and use partly what’s going on in my life to fuel what I do especially consciously. I had a friend think I was somewhat biographical. There’s honesty there. I want to take my work and put it in an optimistic way. I want to reflect that and those around me as well; those who I care for. I tell their stories too not just mine. Where do you see yourself a year from now and 5 years from now? A year from now I hope to sign with a Art Gallery in New York. I would like a gallery to represent me full time and 5 years from now I would like to have several shows and be more content. You know that kind of thing. GIRL ON TOP WHAT’S WRAPPED IS A PHOTO-SHOOT THAT HAS JUST TAKEN PLACE, WITH 21-YEAR OLD DEBBY RYAN, ACTRESS, SINGER, AND A STAR IN HER OWN RIGHT. NOT THE FIRST FAMOUS BEING TO GRACE THE EMPTY HALLS OF THE AVALON, AND DEFINITELY NOT THE LAST. BUT THIS ONE, HOWEVER, IS DIFFERENT THAN ANY JAZZ DANCER OR BLUES SINGER TO EVER PERFORM AT THE HISTORIC VENUE. DEBBY IS SWEET AND KIND, AND WITH FIVE HOURS OF PHOTO-SHOOT MADNESS BEHIND HER, HER BUBBLY ENERGY IS REFRESHING. NO PRETENTIONS ‘TUDE OR UNNECESSARY POSSE, RATHER HER BEST-FRIEND, EMMA, WHO I’M INFORMED IS FRESH OFF A PLANE FROM TEXAS.

Debby Ryan first came to be known to the masses in her breakout role as Bailey Pickett on Disney’s Zack & Cody spinoff, The Suite Life on Deck. Now, with her own super-hit series [Jessie] and transcending musical career, Ryan is setting a new standard. This time around; she’s breaking, changing, and making the rules. She stands in front of me, blond, dressed in black head-to toe, worlds away from her title character’s dark curls and printed dresses. “I just love black. It’s a problem. I call grey pastel black,” she says, letting out a Julia Roberts-like laugh. “Getting a live show on its feet has really inspired my personal style,” During her hiatus, the Texas native has fully immersed herself in her music. Her band; The Never Ending, who she cites Tom Petty, The Pretty Reckless, and Fleetwood Mac as influences, is not the sound you’d expect to hear from the young starlet. There’s no bubblegum pop here. Instead, when creating her sound, she opted for a darker, classic feel. “People are like Debby loves Katy Perry, Debby loves Taylor Swift, and I think that that’s a safe place to go. It’s a girl singing songs about relationships she’s in. There is some of that, but that’s not where we shine,” she says. “We’re classic Rock & Roll people. The old school classic guitar tones; the ramping. Everything is very analog. Which I love because it’s not some dude behind a keyboard pushing a bunch of 111

buttons. My songs are good, but the tracks are great, and that all happens when we all work together.” At 21, Ryan is literally making sh*t happen. Her Disney channel show Jessie, (which she helped create, stars in, produces, and now directs), has really been the perfect stage (pun totally intended) to develop her creativity even further. The network gave Ryan her very first directing assignment that is sure not to be her last. A Disney Channel first, but an accomplishment she’s had her eye on. “Since I was on Suite Life, I had been shadowing directors because I’m nosey. All the things that get you in trouble as a kid are the things that make you successful in life. At least that’s what I’m going for. I started shadowing directors, and I fell in love with it.” It wasn’t long before the network took notice and gave her a shot at doing it herself, “They started really lobbying on my half, which I was so thankful for.” Ryan directed her episode just prior to going on hiatus, which in itself, proved to be a bit of a challenge. “It wasn’t this smooth easy time, and it was our last before spring break. So naturally, everyone had senioritis, but we pulled through—and I’m proud of that. People don’t always see or know the work that is being put into things. “Everyone’s always like, ‘Oh so you’re doing music. Disney must be making you do music’.

And I’m like, ‘No, actually’. I’ve had to fight really hard, against everyone, not just Disney and Hollywood Records. I’ve had to fight hard to make sure too many people don’t get to weigh in on my personal brand,” says the Teen Choice Award nominee. “Everything has been subject to everyone’s opinion, and music is the thing that I need to be spearheading. Having people fight for me, and being in the trenches with good people, helps. When I said I wanted to direct, Disney helped me do that. It feels good knowing that people are taking a chance on building a woman out of me.”

Jessie, now entering its fourth season, has been a labor of love for the star since the get-go. Its first original episode titled “New York, New Nanny” first aired the evening of September 30th, 2011, but work and sweat was taking place months before. Ryan herself was one of the wheelbarrow holders. I asked her what it’s like being the “first lady” of a popular TV series to which she jokingly replied, “I like to see myself as the President,” and rightfully so. “Being the lead of a show is one thing, being there from the very concept before characters are even formed is another. It was really myself, the showrunner, and Disney that were involved in bringing it to life. My heartbeat’s been running through this from the very beginning.” Through her producer duties, Ryan has say on many aspects of production. September 2014 - BELLO

From overseeing the fashion evolution of characters, with mood boards to hiring the personnel that will aide in making that happen, to suggesting the first ever Disney Channel Wedding. A suggestion that was both taken into consideration and eventually made a reality.” Ryan whose character, Jessie Prescott, is older than her by a year, has spoken out on the importance and meaning of such an episode on a network aimed at children up to the age of 14. With the onscreen Nanny calling the shots, there’s no doubt that Jessie’s engagement and approaching marriage will be handled with the upmost authenticity of young love and the commitment that is young courtship. The series has already made history on the network as the first show to go to series without the prior wouldbe-standard pilot order. To others, Ryan’s achievements outside of acting may seem like a stretch, but to this girl, it’s merely an extension of how far her vision would stretch. “When you start acting, you want to tell stories, and that’s all it is. But you don’t realize that there are a hundred different ways to do that on a set. Acting was meant to take me where I am, to teach me everything that I’ve fell in love with now,” she gushes. “I don’t think I even knew what a producer was when I started out.”

CARDIGAN & PANTS LUBLU

On paper Debby Ryan is another young success, in real-time she reads more like a self-made woman. One made of passion, a quality she considers as important as life itself. When asked [what] her driving force is, she says it’s just that; the simple act of passion. “Someone who cares about something. My dad, he’s as left-brain as they come. He works a government desk job. But if you start talking to him about contracts, it gets him going. That crossroads is so beautiful to me. What is your armor? What is your cause? What are you fighting for, and what are you fighting against? Those sorts of things are what keep the grey from settling in.”

5ALBUMS TO WATCH OUT FOR (LISTEN TO) THIS FALL BY BRAD LIBERTI

1. Taylor Swift 1989

2. Maroon 5’s V

3. Ariana Grande’s My Everything

Though it certainly had its fair share of thinly veiled ex-bashing, 2012’s Red saw Swift reach lofty heights as a mature singer songwriter, experimenting with new sounds (dubstep) and new producers (Max Martin) to create what is easily her best album to date. Now, with the megastar dropping cryptic hints via Instagram, it looks like anxious fans can expect a new batch of songs way before the last of the leaves have fallen.

With lead single “Maps” already burning up the charts, and the guys promising a return to their rocking roots after 2011’s massively successful pop detour, Overexposed, Adam Levine and the gang are fixin’ to have yet another hit on their hands just in time for the holidays. And if not, he’s always got his seemingly tenured gig on The Voice to fall back on.

Yes, this one technically dropped at the end of August, but Grande’s already set the summer on fire with the one two punch of the horntastic kiss-off jam, “Problem”, featuring rapper du jour Iggy Azalea, and club anthem, “Break Free” featuring Zedd, so the odds that her sophomore LP will do the same for the coming season seem pretty great. And how about that throwback, Mariahesque cover?

4. Untitled Usher Album

5. The Mystery Project

Believe it or not, it’s been 10 years since Usher reigned supreme with his mega selling Pop-R&B masterpiece Confessions, and even though “Good Kisser” - the first single off this follow-up to 2012’s Looking 4 Myself - hasn’t dominated the charts quite like “Yeah” did, you can always count on this guy to bring the sexy back. Sorry JT!

When Beyoncé dropped her super-stealth, self-titled LP last December she singlehandedly shook the music biz to its core in a way not seen since Napster. Now, with album sales lower than ever, you can bet that the major labels are each amassing a guerilla-style campaign for at least one of their marquee artists. Look for Kanye West to potentially pull a Bey before year’s end, but who knows, anyone from Gaga to Madonna (and even Bieber) might try to beat him to the punch.

“Big Girls Cry” by Sia – Forget “Chandelier.” The Australian singer-songwriter brings on the vulnerability in this uplifting mid-tempo track that soars with an irresistible chorus. “It Was Always You” by Maroon 5 – Adam Levine & Co. take a dip in the electro-pop pool, and the result is a surprisingly catchy ode to the one that got away.

4

“One More Day (Stay With Me)” by Example – The British rapper/singer delivers some 90s realness, thanks to some nostalgic, Clinton-era club beats. ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com

5 “Do or Die” by Afrojack & Thirty Seconds to Mars – Jared Leto’s epically scratchy vocals pair well with the Dutch DJ’s euphoric sounds.

6 7

“Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj – Yes, she heavily samples Sir Mix-alot’s “Baby Got Back,” but all that matters is, once again, we have yet another reason to celebrate big, beautiful booty. “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor – Speaking of booty, here’s another reminder to embrace that extra junk in your trunk.

8

“Leave Your Lover” by Sam Smith – The Year of Sam continues with this devastatingly gorgeous number.

9

“Don’t” by Ed Sheeran – We admit that it has taken us a while to jump on the Sheeran bandwagon, but we finally get it. And this folksy footstomper is the reason why.

“2 On” by Tinashe feat. ScHoolboy Q - This sultry, sexy, Rihanna-esque party jam is already an R&B/HipHop smash, but it’s about to conquer the pop charts, so you better be ready 2 crank it up. “0 to 100/The Catch Up” by Drake - Last year he rapped about starting from the bottom. This year, the T.O.’s finest uses a similarly paired down but still throbbing beat - and name-drops Forrest Gump - to remind his competitors just how quickly he can hit the ground running.

12

“Geronimo” by Sheppard An Aussie band writes a song inspired by the war cry of an Apache hero that sounds a bit like Coldplay - back when they had a pulse. Hey, stranger things have happened.

13

“Change Your Life” by Iggy Azalea Featuring T.I. - Sure she may be the current queen of cultural appropriation, but the Aussie bombshell’s hooks are undeniable and at least this one has the stamp of her mentor, Mr. ATL himself, T.I., all over it.

14

“Don’t Tell ‘Em” - by Jeremih Featuring YG - From it’s Snap!-referencing hook to its Robin-S-at-Sound-Factory beat, this song clearly owes quite a bit to the early 90s, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that. “BO$$” by Fifth Harmony - Whodathunk that Sheryl Sanberg’s Lean In message would’ve ever reached the Pussycat Dolls crowd? Clearly - as per this sonic guilty pleasure - it has.

COSNETT WILL PLAY EDDIE THAWNE, A SOMETIMES COCKY, “PRETTY BOY DETECTIVE” WHO TRANSFERS TO CENTRAL CITY, BARRY ALLEN’S (THE FLASH) HOME CITY. THOUGH COSNETT WON’T POSSES ANY POWERS OF HIS OWN (SEASON THREE?), HIS CHARACTER’S CHARM AND ABILITY TO SWOOP IN AND MAKE THE DAY IS A POWER ALL ON ITS OWN. “HE’S JUST THAT GUY. HE’S GOODLOOKING, HE HAS THE GIRL, THERE’S NOTHING SEEMINGLY WRONG WITH HIM.”

When Arrow, the tale of a vigilante superhero premiered in 2012, it instantly hit a chord with viewers, and just like that, the CW had another genre-bending hit on their hands. Two years later creators Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, Andrew Kreisberg, and Jon Wallace are aiming for a similar outcome. Cosnett, now not so fresh off The Vampire Diaries set, has had the chance to experience the development first hand.

ome the premiere on October 17th, fans of The Flash will undoubtedly love Eddie as he soon warms up to Barry Allen. Cosnett on the other hand is just as suave as Detective Thawne, and he certainly has his looks, too. The 31-year-old teamed up with Celebrity trainer, Drew Logan, to pump up the iron and sweat prior to filming. “I just felt like this guy would look his absolute best,” says the Zimbabwean actor. “It wasn’t something that the network enforced, it was a choice I made when developing this character. Also, considering his line of work in addition to his personality, it made sense. It’s been great. I’ve been living healthier, eating healthier ,and really taking care of myself.” Fans can rest assured that it wont be long till Detective Thawne goes shirtless, somewhat of a staple when you’re on the sexiest network on television.

“It’s really about the chemistry between the characters. You don’t really know what you’re going to get with a show until you just do it and see what happens between ‘Action’ and ‘Cut’,” he explains. “But I think there’s a lot of magic happening and that’s great. With The Vampire Diaries, they also have an amazing process, but they’re all so established and know their characters so well. They know what the show is. Whereas we’re creating that, so it’s a different energy, but it’s very exciting.”

But it’s not all play when your job is rumored to be one of the hottest shows of the season. “The network wants us to be a hit, and production has taken that seriously. They’ve taken great lengths and a lot of care with our sets and our costumes and the writing, and really figuring out what the show is going to be,” he admits. “At the moment it has a bit of everything. It’s all very epic and action-packed in with all the heroic and comic things that go on. But it’s also wonderfully human and has heartfelt moments and unexpectedly funny.”

Superhero shows, especially those of the DC variety, tend to attract the masses. With buzz of the show growing by the minute, it’s obvious that The Flash will enjoy similar success to its predecessors. Cosnett admits to not being subject to too much stunt work, thus far explaining that his character Ethan “is really good with guns.” “I’ve been doing a lot of detective-ing,” he laughs. Much like Arrow super fans waste no time in predicting theories, even though the pilot episode has yet to air. In the writers’ room, it’s a different

121

story. “We haven’t worked out what’s happening yet, which is great. It gives us time to develop our characters and the story and really make it something good. There are always rumors of the mythology of these characters. The mystery and fascination of who is going to become what, and who these people really are. I think it’s really quite riveting.” On the pages of the September issue, Cosnett, resembles a timeless star; brooding (like Brando) and young (like James Dean). He fits right into the scene, high-waisted slacks and 50s cool hair. Suddenly, the Australian is strangely all American. “Those men, they did such wonderful, organic work. I think they were so authentic and true to themselves. That translates to Australia. We get a lot of American influence anyway, but that dream and idea is definitely something that’s international with these Hollywood icons. These people in the western world, they’re massive.” he says of America’s golden gods. In closing, he states with a chuckle “At the same time, I only spent 10 years in Australia, before that I was in Zimbabwe. So it was also difficult for me. People would be like, I remember this, and do you remember that? My response was -- No, I wasn’t here actually.” Right now the blue-eyed hunk has a home on the CW, and come the release of his new show, we’ll all be begging him to stay. September 2014 - BELLO

The Changing Face of NEW YORK REAL ESTATE BY TONY SARGENT FOR CORE

IN THE OLD DAYS REACHING 500’ OR 1,100’ INTO THE SKY WAS SOMETHING! FOR THE LAST FORTY YEARS OR SO THAT HEIGHT SEEMED TO BE THE INVISIBLE LINE ABOVE WHICH NO ONE REALLY BUILT IN MANHATTAN. AROUND THE WORLD “STARCHITECTS” WERE IN THE BUSINESS OF PUSHING THE LIMITS, BUT IN NEW YORK, LUXURY NEW DEVELOPMENT LAGGED BEHIND COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE IN ITS DRIVE TO TOUCH THE STARS. AFTER 9/11 MANY SAID THEY WOULD NEVER LIVE THAT HIGH UP IN THE SKY, SO PERHAPS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO NEW YORK NO LONGER INSPIRING THE DESIGN WORLD WITH ITS ARCHITECTURE. For me, the first true “sky-kiss” building in the world that took my breath away was Dubai’s Burj. Seemingly touching the stratosphere, at 2,000 plus feet it’s something to behold. While New York’s architects delivered some exciting buildings, perhaps driven into conformity by zoning and landmarks, many residential buildings were uninspired for the last several decades. The luxury real state world as we it in New York is changing, fast. Every few months we hear about another new uber-tall luxury high-rise condominium being designed and erected. First come the renderings, whispered in from secret or hush-hush meetings and then a site like Curbed.com or The Real Deal will provide us with the first ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com

glimpse of the official photo as they did last week with Zaha Hadid’s much awaited luxury condominium project for The Related Companies at 520 West 28th Street in West Chelsea and The High Line District. Already some are nicknaming it “The Spaceship” for its unique fluid designs with curves and a starfish shape. Lord Norman Foster is building and designing four properties in Manhattan today and his downtown masterpiece is 551 West 21stStreet. From all of the developments that I have viewed in recent months, this one stands out as the tops in finishes, design that looks like it will stand the test of time, and city and water views that will be enhanced by super-wide windows on all sides. Further downtown, Herzog De Meuron’s 56 Leonard Street in Tribeca shot off the press with brisk sales with the promise of one-of-a-kind views. With stratospheric prices averaging 2,700 per square foot in 2013, and its Penthouses ranging in prices from $27 million to over $40 million, it sold extremely fast. Further uptown, most have heard of the “Billionaires Building” – Extell’s One 57, designed by Atelier Christian

de Portzamparc and SLCE Architects LLP, with interiors by Yabu Pushelberg, it climbs 90 stories into the sky and features a hotel and simply stunning park views. Many complain that the newest breed of skyscrapers in Manhattan will shut the sun off from Central Park, as their shadows stretch over it from the south. At 1,550’ tall, Extell’s planned Nordstrom tower which will house a hotel and condos above the famed retailer, it sets a new benchmark for Manhattan luxury living. But it is more than the sky-scrapers that are changing the face of Manhattan. Only 13 years ago we did not have our most treasured resource (outside of Central Park) – The Hudson River Park. In 13 short years our city has embraced its water front for cycling, running, parks, sunbathing and we’ve turned what were once empty dilapidated lofts and warehouses into green space that wraps the city. Even Brooklyn, has now become a destination for former diehard Manhattan-ites. In part the city’s safety, desirability, and now livable nature has contributed to people from all over the world choosing to call it home (or home-away-from home) today. New York is once again New. 124

Remove from heat and finish melting by simply stirring until smooth. Set aside.

“Soufflés are undoubtedly delicious, but let’s be honest; when it comes to making them even I think they are a pain in the ass! Luckily, these baked chocolate mousse cups are the next best thing. They are easy to put together, much more forgiving, and can even be frozen! Give them a try and you might even forget about soufflés all together!” –Chef Ronnie Woo

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk, whisk the egg whites on high speed until foamy. With the mixer running, slowly add the sugar and whisk until soft peak form. Stir the egg yolks into the chocolate mixture until completely combined. Using a rubber spatula, gently fold in the whipped egg whites. Divide the mixture amongst 6 ramekins, cover with plastic wrap, and freeze for at least 4 hours. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 325 degrees F, place the ramekins on a baking sheet (straight from the freezer with plastic wrap removed) and bake until puffed up and cracked on the eggs with the center still slightly shiny, about 30-35 minutes. Cook for 10-15 minutes before serving. In the meantime, make the caramel sauce. In a saucepan, heat the granulated sugar on medium low heat. Cook until the sugar melts and turns an amber color, about 5-10 minutes. Stir the remaining chunks of sugar continually until it dissolves with the rest of the sugar. Stir in the butter until melted and combined. Whisk in heavy cream and salt until thoroughly combined. Drizzle over the baked chocolate mousse cups and enjoy! Note: Prepared chocolate ramekins can be frozen for 1-2 weeks.

orking the club scene since the tender age of fourteen, Lyons knows a thing or two about how to keep a venue ever-evolving and successful. He’s not only a proven master manipulator of sound and lighting magic, but is also the inventor of a successful line of speakers (called, as it happens, “The Avalon Series”) that reside in thousands of venues around the world. In addition, he’s helped to define and redefine tony nightlife in several major cities during his long and prolific career.

His latest undertaking is an epic Vegas-style renovation of Avalon which includes the first and only installation of EAW Club One series speakers, a brand new top-notch sound

In a casual interview, Bello Mag Senior Lifestyle Editor, Jasmine Vo, sat with John Lyons. He tells our readers a little more about it…

JL: Is this 619 I’m calling you from your mobile? Are you from San Diego? JV: Yes I am but I’ve kept the 619 area code to make it easier for my Asian mother to get a hold of me when she needs to. JL: I’ve been taking the train down to San Diego a lot. I recently acquired a venue down there. I’m turning the old nightclub 4th and B into an Avalon. JV: I heard you renovated the Avalon in Hollywood, what made you decide to give this venue a revamp? JL: I’ve owned the Avalon for about 12 years now. I wanted to do it about 2-3 years ago, but I got caught up in projects around the world. I didn’t have the time so I put it off. But I realized I needed to make the time so I created an open schedule to work on my venue. JV: How do you know when its time to revamp? JL: I’ve built 55 nightclubs in my lifetime. After so many years of doing it, I just get this instinctive sense to do it. The right time isn’t when the business has failed. The right time is to do it before people start to notice the things I notice. The nightclub business can be fickle. I learned early in my career to create a venue that not only inherits a great design but one that can provide many things. I like to provide entertainment. One of my first venues I owned before technology is what it is today and DJ’s played records. Sound couldn’t produce bass so I hired a 127

Given his ongoing success and exemplary understanding of the urban nightlife culture, we can expect to see the famous Avalon Hollywood dazzling and delighting current and future clubgoers for many more years to come.

JV: Have you always owned venues that specialize in EDM? JL: No. Music has trends in every decade. I use to own a Punk Rock club called PIT. They played Ska as well. Another one specialized in Deep House then there was trance. I always tried to have something that was relevant and ahead of the curve. My audience has driven the boat. JV: I’m sure you get approached by many artist. Do you have any upcoming artist we should be looking out for? JL: The next big thing could be really subtle. I remember when Skrillex launched his career at Avalon. When he started, he was going against what was going on at the time…music wise. It was a breath of fresh air. I think of myself as a quarterback of music. I like to fund and encourage artist. I never turn my eyes and ears off to anyone. Because the new kid could be the next Skrillex. But to answer your question, Gladiator is a local artist here in Los Angeles, CA. Mack J is great too. JV: I read in your bio you are a lighting and sound designer. Do you have any

recommendations for a great at home sound system? Just in case we want to bring Avalon home [I laugh]. JL: I will let you know a dirty little secret about speakers that the industry doesn’t want you to know. It’s not about the name brand of the speaker its about looking at the space you want to fill up sound with. Take a look at the room you want to put sound in. Remember sound hits the walls and bounce back to you. But AW and Falcon speakers are great. JV: What is your favorite place to be when you need to shut the world out? JL: I am loving San Diego, CA. I’m always in a good mood there. I do a lot of projects in Vegas. I always drive when I have to be there for work. I love to get the right music playing and in the zone because I love the feeling of solitary peace when I am driving. JV: What is your favorite place to eat in Los Angeles? JL: I don’t really have one. It’s hard to say since I just got back from Italy. I like simple and healthy. I’m thinking of opening a few Mediterranean restaurants over the next few years. JV: Keep us posted! We love food. September 2014 - BELLO

Overcoming

Food Cravings WORDS BY: LORI KENYON FARLEY & MARRA ST. CLAIR Co-founders Ritual Wellness, co-authors The Juice Cleanse Reset Diet

IN THE FALL AND EARLY WINTER, WHEN THE KIDS ARE BACK TO SCHOOL, THE DAYS GET SHORTER, AND THE ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL OBLIGATIONS SEEM TO INCREASE, MANY OF US FEEL LOW ON ENERGY, AND THAT IS WHEN WE ARE MORE LIKELY TO SUCCUMB TO UNHEALTHY FOOD CRAVINGS. THE BEST WAY TO OVERCOME CRAVINGS AND STICK TO YOUR HEALTHY DIET INTENTIONS IS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOUR BODY IS REALLY TELLING YOU. A CRAVING USUALLY SIGNALS THAT YOUR BODY IS LACKING IN SOMETHING, BUT IT’S PROBABLY NOT THAT BAG OF CHIPS OR BUCKET OF BEN & JERRY’S YOU ARE ABOUT TO DIG INTO.

TO KEEP CRAVINGS TO A MINIMUM, FOLLOW THESE TIPS: • Start your day with a healthy breakfast that includes protein, carbs and fat, like Greek yogurt with berries or an egg white scramble with whole grain toast. • Eat something every three hours or so, to keep your body fueled and satiated. By planning ahead, you can keep healthy choices on hand to keep you on track and less likely to succumb to the unhealthy munchies. • Keep healthy snacks on hand, like fruit, raw nuts, or cut up veggies. Pairing protein, fat and carbs for each of your meals, and most of your snacks will be the best choices. Have a spoonful of almond butter with some apple slices, berries with cottage cheese, or a tablespoon of hummus with carrot sticks. • Make sure your dinner includes a salad or lots of veggies. Both are high in nutrients, low in calories, and full of fiber, and will help you say no to an unhealthy, high calorie, bedtime snack. • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. When you are dehydrated or thirsty, you often mistake thirst for food cravings. Aim for at least 8 glasses per day.

ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com

130

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY TO LEARN WHAT YOUR CRAVINGS ARE TELLING YOU. When those cravings do arise, your body may actually be trying to tell you something. A sudden urge for pasta, pretzels or chocolate may be caused by more than just hunger. Learn what your cravings mean so you can learn how to combat them.

If you are craving Salty Foods: You may have a mineral deficiency. Studies have shown that women who eat low-calcium diets crave more salty foods. A lack of calcium, potassium and iron are the three minerals most commonly lacking. Eat a banana, some kiwi fruit, dried apricots, or a green juice.

If you are craving sweets: Your body is probably just looking for an energy lift. You may be overtired, or your blood sugar may be low. To avoid blood sugar fluctuations, eat complex carbohydrates like oatmeal and brown rice, rather than processed simple carbs like white bread. Rather than reaching for candy, have a high protein snack like string cheese or a smoothie with some nut butter, protein powder or yogurt.

If you are craving carbs You may just be in need of a hug. For most people, foods like macaroni and cheese and pizza are comfort foods. When you are in a bad mood, stressed,

or sad, eating a bowl of pasta may feel like a hug from mom. Rather than feeding your face, feed your soul instead, by calling a loved one, going for a walk with a friend, or meditating.

If you are craving chocolate: You may be deficient in magnesium. When your body is low in magnesium, it can cause hormonal changes that can

leave you craving chocolate. Reach for nuts or a banana instead, and increase your consumption of dark leafy greens like spinach and kale, and add some avocado to your salads to keep your magnesium levels high. If you do decide to have a piece of chocolate, make it high quality, dark, organic chocolate.

If you are craving fried food: You may have an essential fatty acid deficiency. People eating low fat diets, vegetarians, and vegans all have to be sure to incorporate enough good fats into their diets. Your body requires healthy fats for anti-inflammatory actions, healthy brain function, and preservation of muscle mass. They also give you glowing skin and shiny hair. Avocado, olives, nuts and salmon are all good sources of healthy fat. 131

My love of food began at an early age, as the oldest of 5 boys; I was the one assisting my mother in the kitchen on a daily basis. For me this felt very natural, I was fascinated with the flavors, the texture and the magic of mixing a few ingredients to make a delicious dish, by the age 8 I was able to cook many dishes while my mom took care of my younger brothers, food was and still is a passion, a way of life.. What’s your culinary background? My first cooking job as a teenager was helping the chef in the most popular café in my hometown. Years later I landed in ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com

Manhattan and started working for few restaurants where I moved from server to restaurant manager to food and beverage consultant and by doing so my knowledge of food and hospitality grew all the while. From NYC I relocated to Miami, to open a branch of Shiraz Events, an innovative Catering, Design and Production company. Here as the VP and Creative Director, I head our catering team; tailoring beautiful menus for a long list of private and corporate clients. I am blessed to have an amazing outlet where daily I explore the possibilities of food and presentation to its fullest potential. Also, it is a known fact that throughout history many cultures around the world have used herbs, plants and spices to treat different health conditions. Unfortunately, these days in the western culture not enough people realize the capabilities of these natural elements. My goal as “The Spice Detective” is to collect info from different outlets into one easy to read “database”, share all that I have learned and help incorporate those healing spices into every day simple dishes that will not intimidate any level cook and by doing so, provide you with delicious and natural ways to benefit your health. What was your big culinary brake or brake in general? Opening Shiraz Events in Miami with my partner Shai Tertner was the biggest step I took and the feedback has been amazing. Were you ever teased as child or as an adult for your passion for cuisine? I was never teased about my passion for food and my obsession for the healing properties of herbs and spices, I feel more and more people are starting to be open and seek that knowledge and every time I would share that info with friends and family it’s had been well received and appreciated. What’s your favorite meal and meal to prepare? Homemade couscous with a rich Middle Eastern vegetable and chick pea soup that comes with it. What meals are you craving the most right now? 133

set of flavors and dishes that we really don’t get to experience here in the states. I don’t believe in over rated food, it is a matter of taste and you should eat what makes you happy. What’s your idea of happiness? Being somewhere by the ocean with family and a bunch of friends , cooking with them a great meal, pairing it with wine or locally brewed beer, enjoying a great conversation while watching the sunset. I hope that paints a blissful picture in your mind. What do you appreciate most?

My grandmother Rachel passed away few years ago, her food was amazing… it was filled with her loving energy and you could actually taste the love… Is there an ingredient/condiment you prefer? Recommend? In general I love my food well spiced… Cilantro, Garlic, Ginger, Cumin, Turmeric, Sumac, Zaatar. I love how all of them are packed with flavor and anti-oxidants. Is there a dish you hate? Hate is a strong word; there is a fruit that I really dislike, might be the only fruit or vegetable that I don’t eat... Persimmon, the texture and the flavor don’t agree with me at all for some reason. Is there a childhood comfort food you think about? Yes, when I was growing up , every year after the 24 hour fast of Yom Kippur my grandmother used to make a simple yet flavorful chicken soup, with turmeric, onion and lots of cilantro. It was and is favorite way to break a fast. The scent of the soup stays with me till this day. What kind of ethnic food you feel is underrated and overrated? I think Indian food is underrated. I find it to be super flavorful super health and an amazing option for vegans. I wish more American restaurateurs will create modern interpretations of classic Indian cuisines, India is huge country and each region has a unique

When it comes to food, I appreciate the quality of the incidents that goes into a dish, which means freshest, ideally locally grown, ideally organic, and nothing that is processed. How did you go about into becoming the Spice Detective? As I continued to delve further into the world of the culinary herbs and spices, and developing my knowledge, I become very intrigued by the healing and medical properties of herbs and spices… I really wanted to create a pilot for TV. While sharing the idea with good friends of mine who is a television producer, he thought that a blog about it will be a fantastic outlet which will allow my more freedom for my creativity, knowledge and passion. It made a perfect sense and the rest is history. I must thank BES films for their dedication, their feedback, support and believing in my dream. Ricky Rocha Loures who helped me design the actual blog site and Chef Myriam Cordova for the tips and thoughts. What’s one of the best meals you’ve ever had? At one of the events we have catered for a Shiraz client, we took the guests on a culinary journey around the worlds in 8 courses. In collaboration with my catering team and executive chef Myriam Cordova we created a tasting menu that was unique, creative and delicious with a great spectrum of flavors from across the globe. Be sure to catch Yaniv Cohen on his Youtube channel to be updated on everything and anything concerning “The Spice Detective”. September 2014 - BELLO

COLOMBIA IS KNOWN FOR BEEN SYNONYM OF GREAT COFFEE. THEIR CAFÉ IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE BEST AND JUAN VALDEZ, AND HIS MULE CONCHITA, HAVE TRAVELED THE WORLD REPRESENTING THIS TRADITION. As it was to be expected, the brand decided to open a flagship store in Miami, and bring to our Hispanic community a little taste from home. Juan Valdez’s main goal is to promote the presence of Colombian culture and the growing expansion of the coffee producing business done by the cafeteros themselves. This comes during a controversial timing as Starbucks just opened their 1st store in Bogota.

star Radamel Falcao, and his teammates from AS Monaco Fabio Tavares, Andrea Raggi and Abdou Diallo, attended the opening of the flagship. Falcao, who was not able to participate in the World Cup due to an injury, got to try different flavors and engage with fans that went to see the new store and have a closer look to their idol. The brand presented their new flavors and a menu that is targeting new consumers while keeping the loyal following happy.

To celebrate this new journey in the American market, Colombian soccer

BELLO LOCKER WORDS BY JOHN CULLEN, SPORTS AND FITNESS EDITOR

SOS Rehydrate

Tommy John Sports Boxers

Nutiva O’Coconut Snacks

If you’re an active individual that finds it challenging to consume enough water, and aren’t a fan of sports drinks or coconut water, then SOS Rehydrate may be your solution to preventing hydration. Adding one powdered packet of SOS to water is purported to help your system absorb three times more water than just water by itself, six times the electrolytes of a normal sports drink, and 27% more electrolytes than coconut water with only half of the calories and half of the sugar. Water is available in blueberry and lemon flavors.

As a man, there’s nothing more annoying than getting your… belongings tossed around at the gym. Tommy John’s new line of sports boxers offers 360-degree stretch fabric to provide superior comfort while preventing any unwanted movement and everyone’s favorite - moisture-wicking and antiodor performance. But what sets these undergarments apart from the rest is the built in utility pocket that’s perfect for safely storing a key, card, or even a cell phone. Tommy John boxers come in three cuts and lengths: boxer briefs, square cut, and sports trunks.

I’m a huge fan of all things coconut, so when I find delicious portable goodies like Nutiva’s latest O’Coconut snacks, I get a little excited. Using lightly sweetened organic, fair trade, coconut flakes and coconut oil, these bites contain no corn, soy, or cane sugar, which makes them a great healthy alternative for satisfying that sweet craving. They’re individually wrapped to provide you with convenience when hitting the trail, traveling, or another long workday. Enjoy pure coconut with O’Coconut Classic or try O’Coconut Hemp & Chia for additional nutty flavor and the nutritional benefits of Omega3s.

Super.Natural Clothing

Livliga Lifestyle

With the impending winter ahead, Super.Natural is raising the bar for active and thermal wear that’s not only warm, but actually stylish too. Made from merino wool, Super.Natural clothing is also no itch, odor resistant, and moisture wicking, but perhaps the best part is that its machine washable and tumble dry friendly. Super.Natural makes a great outer layer when running or hiking and under layer for snow sports. Also camping or sleeping.

Ever heard of the saying “Too much of a good thing”? Well, just because something is healthy, or even worse - not, doesn’t mean we should eat in excess. Enter Livliga’s line of portion control dinnerware, which help to guide us to appropriate serving sizes for every meal. Aside from being sized more reasonably than the normal extra-large options on the market, each design is based on research that shows how certain images, colors, proportions, and visual illusions support positive triggers in our minds for right-sized eating.

MUST READ

THE 2014 FALL BOOKLIST BY HIKO MITSUZUKA

THE WEATHER’S COOLING OFF, SO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS: TIME TO CURL UP WITH A GOOD BOOK OR TWO. OR FIVE. AND HERE ARE JUST SOME OF THE TITLES WE’LL BE CHECKING OUT IN THE COMING MONTHS.

SEEING OTHER PEOPLE by Mike Gayle

U

K novelist Gayle returns with his 13th book about a father of two named Joe Clarke who wakes up in bed with his much younger intern. But he’s sure nothing happened...right? Mortified by his mistake, Joe vows to be a better man. But when his adored wife Penny puts two and two together and leaves him, things start to take a turn for the decidedly strange: Joe is told for a fact that he didn’t have an affair after all. He just thinks he did. Which is great news...if it weren’t for the fact that the person telling him this is the mean-spirited ghost of his least favorite ex-girlfriend. Gayle, who may as well be the second coming of Nick Hornby, promises another enchanting tale that’ll delight and deliver.

FEAR STREET: PARTY GAMES by R.L. Stine

T

he record-breaking young-adult writer is reviving the teen horror series that dominated bookstores in the 90s (Harry Potter who?) and turned him into the world’s best selling children’s author. The first in a new batch of Fear Street titles, Games is all about a teenager who throws a birthday party for himself on a spooky island where the guests start dying one by one. Sounds like classic Stine. And we can’t wait to consume every page-turning chapter.

A VISION OF FIRE by Gillian Anderson with Jeff Rovin

T

he X-Files star Anderson returns to the sci-fi roots that made her a household name - this time in literary form. This thriller, which appears to be the first installment of The Earthend Saga, focuses on a child psychiatrist who investigates strange and disturbing acts among children around the world.

As co-writer, Anderson told Entertainment Weekly she “wanted a very strong female character, around my age. I would want to read something like that, and I think other women would like to read.” A Vision of Fire will be released next month by Simon & Schuster’s new imprint Simon451, a nod to Ray Bradbury’s sci-fi classic Fahrenheit 451.

WEIGHTLESS: MY LIFE AS FAT MAN AND HOW I ESCAPED by Gregg McBride

B

efore you pack on those inevitable holiday pounds, you may want to ask yourself this: You know what you need to do to lose weight, so why can’t you do it?

Morbidly obese and desperately unhappy, Gregg McBride, a writer for Disney, asked himself this question for years, until something different finally “clicked,” and enabled him to embark on a weight-loss journey of 250 pounds that has now lasted ten years and still counting. And he chronicles every victory and loss in this painfully honest and humorous memoir. 138

Be flexible and open your mind. You’re a powerful leader and that brings comfort to those around you. Just be careful not to come from a place of entitlement. That will cause stagnation in the workplace.

No matter where you go, there you are. You can’t run from your problems. First go within, listen for the answers and then face the music.

Much courage and perseverance is needed in order to succeed. You’re on the right path towards long-term success.

SAGITTARIUS

CAPRICORN December 21 – January 18

Temptation lurks all around you. What appears to be pleasurable and tempting is usually never as fun, and yet the cost is often greater in personal anguish than we ever thought it would be. Think before you act.

This month you’ll feel the sense of being born again. You’ll start to see things a little differently, almost with child-like wonder. Enjoy this new perspective.

Change and transformation are the theme for you this month. Embrace it; you’re like the caterpillar turning into a butterfly. Be free.

TAURUS

Lots of work is coming your way! Be proud and believe that you have a lot to bring to the table. Many respect your efforts and input.

Lady luck is on your side this month. Any projects that were put on hold will be moving forward.

You’ve been tempted to fight for your right to be right or defend yourself when another person offends you. However, the stars urge you to pick your battles wisely. This will lead to a more peaceful existence.
