THE
ISSUE
Letter from the Editor ob·ses·sion /əb’seSHən/noun 1. the state of being obsessed with someone or something. “She cared for him with a devotion bordering on obsession.” Our annual obsession issue is finally here, and (not very modestly said) it is our best one yet! We are opening with our current obsession, Ben McKenzie, as new detective James Gordon in the highly anticipated Fall show, Gotham. We feature him in a very moody photo shoot we did in Venice, CA a few weeks ago, along with an amazing interview. Also, you may have already seen our exclusive video interview with McKenzie from the Bello mad shoot set, but if not you can, you should check it out on www.bellomag.com. It also includes some fun “Behind The Scenes” footage.
SHIRT MATIERE JEANS JOE’S JEANS
October is what we call a “new season” in the entertainment world, so we made sure to bring you exclusive interviews and articles about our favorite new TV shows to check out. We have also created a new section with Tech and Design picks that will impress and inspire you. And let’s not forget that we are always on top of the latest in Beauty and Fashion with countless articles and photo editorials. It can be challenging to be original in a world where everyone is given a voice and the opportunity to express themselves, so we, as the publishing industry, are expected to lead the way and stay on the cutting edge of fashion and entertainment. Unfortunately, very few magazines produce all original content like BELLO mag does. We always strive to bring you a fresh selection of original interviews in each issue, with people you already love (like The Returned’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead) as well as those you need to discover (like Andrew J. West from The Walking Dead). It has always been our obsession to be the leader in original magazine content for your continued enjoyment, but, as always, we will let you be the judge of that. We would also like to hear from you about your obsessions, so feel free to share them online and/or send them to us @BELLOmag (Twitter and Instagram), #BELLOmag on bellomag.tumblr.com, and bellomagworld on Facebook.
Ciao, Aleksandar Tomovic (Editor in Chief)

COVER STORY
COP CRUSADER:
BEN
MCKENZIE WORDS BY BRAD LIBERTI PHOTOS BY ALEKSANDAR TOMOVIC
FOR MOST ACTORS, IT CAN BE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO LIVE UP TO AN ONSCREEN ALTER EGO – ESPECIALLY IF SAID CHARACTER HAPPENS TO BE AN ICONIC DO-GOODER WITH NERVES OF STEEL – BUT APPARENTLY, THIS IS NEWS TO BEN MCKENZIE… AFTER ALL, LESS THAN 10 HOURS BEFORE OUR CONVERSATION, THE FORMER SOUTHLAND STAR FOUND HIMSELF NEEDING QUITE A FEW STICHES IN HIS FOREHEAD AFTER A FIGHT SCENE WENT AWRY ON THE SET OF HIS HIGHLY ANTICIPATED NEW FOX DRAMA, GOTHAM. YET SAVE FOR AN INSTAGRAM POST, AND SOME SUBSEQUENT RIPPLES AMONG THE BLOGOSPHERE, YOU’D NEVER EVEN KNOW HE WAS LESS THAN 100%.
It’s a page right out of Commissioner Gordon’s book—suffer in silence as you focus intently on the task at hand – but for McKenzie, as for Gotham City’s trusty head of police, that’s just par for the course. “I’ve always liked embracing the physicality of roles,” he tells me, ice pack practically glued to his head to soothe the constant throb. “And this one definitely embraces that action esthetic-- a lot of big fight scenes, a little bit of wire-work. We try to do everything as authentically as possible, kind of throwbacks to old school action scenes where it’s just a guy and a bunch of bad guys fighting it out.” 9
The idea might sound like a novel one in our current age of automatic weapons and special effects wizardry, but if you’re going to reimagine the life of one of the comics’ most indelible superheroes, prior to his donning of the Batsuit, then it certainly pays to take it back to basics. “I was a huge fan of what Tim Burton did with his Batman, and I loved the Nolan films, but I think the great thing about doing an origin story is that we really are free to reinvent things as we go along.” And for McKenzie personally, that means moving away from other actors’ interpretations of Gordon (ahem… Gary Oldman): “You just play the given circumstances as
you see fit and just do your work as an actor in the moment.” It helps as well that Gotham (created by Rome and The Mentalist mastermind, Bruno Heller) introduces us to Detective James Gordon, a steadfast rookie who has years to go before assuming his status as the city’s police commissioner or as an irreplaceable link to the caped crusader. Naturally though, there’s shades of the man we all know and love: “Old fashioned hero is kind of the broadest but also simplest description of him,” McKenzie says proudly. “We’re in an age of the anti-hero, especially on television, and Jim Gordon is not an October 2014 - BELLO

anti-hero. He’s a hero. He’s a guy who has built his entire life around fighting evil forces.” The actor continues: “But Bruno and I are interested in what happens when you put a hero into an impossible situation where everything and everyone around him is so corrupt. James tries to be as good a cop as he can, but he’s in a town where no one else is really thinking about doing the right thing.” A town very much unlike the gritty Los Angeles portrayed in his last hit cop show, Southland. “Gotham is New York, New York is Gotham. But then you have this whole stylistically over the top aspect, and you have to let the beautiful sets and huge action scenes, and all of the special effects—let them seep in and inform your acting style, which is slightly larger than life but still grounded in emotional realism.” McKenzie has a little practice with this sort of thing having spent four years starring as wayward teen, Ryan Atwood, on Fox’s primetime soap, The O.C. (“I’d already graduated from college when I landed that part, but it still feels like the equivalent of high school in the sense that it was an informative experience business-wise). But it is his first time playing what he calls “the grounded moral center of a larger than life universe”... and that’s something that he’s loving. Well, that and the fact that he gets to be part of this dramatic - DC Comics/fanboy – approved, of course - reimagining of the Batman Universe. This might in fact be the thing that excites him the most—making every bump and bruise totally worthwhile: “Everybody knows these characters to some degree, but no one knows them at this point in their lives.”

DRAWING FIRE: The World According To Herzog & de Meuron BY BRENT LAMBERT, DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY CONTRIBUTOR
“THE DAY YOU QUIT LEARNING WHEN YOU’RE FIREFIGHTING IS THE DAY YOU NEED TO RETIRE,” SAID A FIRE CHIEF ON THE FRONTLINE OF THE DANGEROUS HAPPY CAMP COMPLEX FIRE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BACK IN MIDSEPTEMBER. THIS SAGE ADVICE STAYED WITH ME FOR DAYS AFTERWARDS, AS I WAS STRUCK BY ITS UNIVERSAL RELEVANCE TO ANY CHALLENGING ENTERPRISE OR PURSUIT, BE IT LEFT-BRAIN, RIGHT-BRAIN, OR BOTH. TWO PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND THESE WORDS OF WISDOM BETTER THAN MOST, ARE JACQUES HERZOG AND PIERRE DE MEURON (BOTH BORN IN 1950), FOUNDERS OF THE GROUNDBREAKING ARCHITECTURE FIRM HERZOG & DE MEURON. Based in Basel, Switzerland, Herzog & de Meuron began their practice in 1978 and they have been rewriting architectural history ever since. They gained international prestige for transforming the Bankside Power Plant into the Tate Modern in London, guided by their remarkable genius for creating revolutionary architectural poetry out of form, materiality, transparency, and the most important building material of all -- light. In 1996 the duo brought to life one of their most notable achievements when their design of the Dominus Winery in Napa Valley was opened. Nestled
in the hills of Napa, the building is exposed to the very same elements as the vineyards themselves -unbearable heat during the day, and bone-chilling cold at night. Their solution for the extreme conditions was a construction technique in which the walls of the 300m-long building were made of gabions (wire cages filled with rocks). During the heat of midday the rocks absorb the sun’s relentless heat, keeping the interior cool. And during the cooler nights, the rocks release their stored radiant warmth. The Dominus Winery building has since become an architectural superstar, drawing as
Jacques Herzog (left) and Pierre de Meuron (right): © 2011, Marco Grob many visitors to the site for its design as for the delicious wine it holds within. On the other side of the world, Herzog & de Meuron helped turn an otherwise unforgettable street corner in Tokyo into one of Japan’s most stunning buildings of the past half century. In 2003 their design, PRADA’s 6-foor flagship store in Tokyo, opened its doors for the first time, further cementing Herzog & De Meuron’s reputation as one of the most forward-thinking visionary partnerships in contemporary architecture. Their intention with the design was “to reshape both the concept and function of shopping, pleasure,

Of all Herzog & de Meuron’s radical contributions to the world of architecture, perhaps their best known to date is the “Bird’s Nest”, the stadium created to house the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. Not only is the structural design of its exterior shell a perfect example of how thinking outside the box can lead to exciting new realities in architectural form, but the design itself is as stunningly poetic as it is complex. As soon as the design was unveiled to the public, it was immediately embraced by the people of China for its elegant interpretation of a “bird’s nest”, a symbol of major importance in Chinese cultural history. Further proof that Herzog & de Meuron have mastered the grandest of all architectural virtues -- its power to unite people and give voice to the voiceless.
and communication to encourage the meshing of consumption and culture.”
serves as a brilliant monument to honor the city’s fascinating history.
Featuring a structural diamond pattern facade, the diamonds are filled with a range of flat, convex, and concave glass windows which bring a human scale to the interior experience, while providing a fascinating trompe l’oeil effect for visitors both inside and out. Herzog describes the glass panels as “an interactive optical device. Because some of the glass is curved, it seems to move as you walk around it. That creates awareness of both the merchandise and the city; there’s an intense dialogue between actors. Also, the grid brings a human scale to the architecture, like display windows. It’s almost old-fashioned.”
Among the most impressive aspects of the museum’s design is its seamless integration into the natural setting that surrounds it. Clad in a copper finish, the building will soon become as green as the nearby trees, as the textured facade creates a light-filtering effect similar to being in a forest. The enormous ribbon windows provide visitors with breathtaking views of the landscape as well as the building itself. Nowhere is this more striking than inside the 144-foot-tall monumental tower which rises high above the entire site.
If there is a connection between architecture and fire, it almost certainly has everything to do with starting fires rather than extinguishing them. Herzog and de Meuron have been sparking the fires of our imagination for more than three decades now, showing no sign of slowing down anytime soon. And just like the fire chief in California who champions the importance of never arriving at a place where you think you’ve learned everything there is to learn, Jacques Herzog has described a similar rule for himself in his own life’s work. ”If I knew what I’m doing,” Herzog says, “I probably wouldn’t do it anymore. I wouldn’t be interested in getting up in the morning, if I knew that’s exactly how architecture works. It would be boring if I knew this is my way.”
M.H. de Young Museum, San Francisco (© Gary Fong)
Two years later the citizens of San Francisco were given their very own architectural jewel from the Swiss design masters. In 2005, the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum opened in the city to rave reviews. Built as a replacement for the original museum which first opened in 1895 and was eventually destroyed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the complex breathed new life into the site and now 19

WHEN JEAN-LUC GODARD FAMOUSLY TOLD AUDIENCES, “YOU SHOULD FEEL ABOUT A WOMAN, NOT A MOVIE. YOU CAN’T KISS A MOVIE.”, HE WASN’T SO MUCH BELITTLING FILMS, BUT RATHER PRAISING THE POWER OF THE ONSCREEN FEMALE AND HER INDEFATIGABLE HOLD OVER HER ADMIRERS. OF COURSE, THE ODDS OF ACTUALLY GETTING TO KISS A WORLD-CLASS BEAUTY THE LIKES OF JEAN SEBERG OR ANA KARINA WERE AND STILL ARE SLIM TO NONE FOR MOST MERE MORTALS, BUT THAT HASN’T STOPPED HALF THE WORLD FROM FALLING FOR THESE ENIGMATIC CHARMERS AND THEIR EFFORTLESSLY CHIC NEWWAVE STYLE.
Like one wide-eyed performer and budding Francophile from Rocky Mount, North Carolina... “I always sort of loved anything European-French, but also anything from the ‘50s and ‘60s”, says actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, clearly accessing her happy place. “But it wasn’t until I was a little older that I married the two and became very interested in the French New Wave and in French Pop from that era.” She now considers this period to be a defining influence on everything she does, from her devoutly natural onscreen presence, to her romantic, unstudied clothing choices, and even her champagne fizzy vocal style. Don’t believe her? Check out the music video for “Did We Live Too Fast”, the first single off of the ultra-hip new LP Winstead just dropped as one half of the duo Got a Girl. “I knew that it needed to have that French New Wave style but that it also needed to be a little bit off the wall, just to satisfy what I know is Dan’s sensibility. “ The Dan she’s referring to is prolific music producer and Handsome Boys Modeling School mastermind (along with DJ Prince Paul), “Dan the Automator” Nakamura. Like Winstead, he hardly needed help upping his artsy street cred, but together, the two have become an undeniable creative force, mixing sonic landscapes with 27
bold visuals to create a sound that is unabashedly retro and yet undeniably au currant on their new album, “I Love You But I Must Drive Of A Cliff Now.” “I had been a huge fan of Dan’s for a really long time,” says Winstead, recalling their first meeting on the set of her 2010 film, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Dan was brought on as a music contributor). “(2001’s) Luvage was one of the first albums that my husband (writer/director, Riley Stearns) and I each connected to when we were both in our teens and then we bonded over it when we were dating.”
and forth that eventually became a full on collaboration that worked out amazingly smoothly.” She still sounds somewhat shocked by it all, which makes sense when you consider the fact that Winstead, despite years of vocal training, wasn’t exactly nursing dreams of pop stardom. Instead, she was quite content working steadily in film, balancing a budding starlet’s plate of thriller/slashers (Black Christmas, The Thing) and big-budget action (she played Bruce Willis’s daughter in A Good Day To Die Hard, and Mary Todd Lincoln in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire
I knew that it needed to have that French New Wave style but that it also needed to be a little bit off the wall, just to satisfy what I know is Dan’s sensibility. Needless to say, the actress was more than a little star-struck during that brief on-set introduction, but she was absolutely gobsmacked when the Automator suggested that they collaborate… “I wasn’t sure if I should take it seriously or not but he ended up sending me a track and asking me to write something to it, and I did, and it kind of started this slow back
Hunter) with some truly exciting roles in cult faves like Scott Pilgrim (“such a great experience, all around”) and Quentin Tarantino’s adrenaline-fueled Death Proof (“so incredible to get in there and play within a world that I had always wanted to be a part of.”) Oddly enough, while these last two were critically lauded films, each represented an artistic breakthrough October 2014 - BELLO

for Winstead along with everyone else involved, they did not immediately connect with moviegoers. The actress was obviously disappointed, but hardly devastated - “You just go Huh? I don’t know why people aren’t getting it… I think it’s great!” - and in fact, even more affirmed in her need to make the work her number one motivation... “Everything for me is about the long term and longevity and what’s gonna be around 10 years from now regardless of what people think of (the project) in the present.” The stars did align for the actress, however, in 2012 when her lead role opposite Aaron Paul in James Ponsoldt’s heartbreaking exploration of addiction and adoration, Smashed, was released to universal acclaim, with critics singling out the actress for her ballsy, no bulls**t performance. “I think every actor hopes to have a moment like that in their career where people stop and go “Hey, you’re good.” That really meant a lot to me. And having it work out in a way that I was proud of was pretty life-changing in terms of what I feel I’m able to do in the future.” Fans can get a glimpse of this Mary Elizabeth 2.0 when a slew of buzzy projects she’s been hard at work on start to premiere in the fall. First up, she stars opposite Michael Sheen and Jeremy Renner in the espionage thriller, Kill The Messenger. Next, she headlines A&E’s 2015 drama, The Returned, a remake of the spooky French supernatural series (“I watched one episode of that version and was hooked on it immediately”). And finally she appears in The Office alum John Krazinski’s debut feature, The Hollars, alongside Anna Kendrick. It’s quite a full plate for one person, no less an actress who’s currently moonlighting as an in-demand singersongwriter, but much like Seberg or Karina before her, Mary Elizabeth Winstead somehow manages to do it all with style, grace, and enviable ease.

FROM TRICK TO TREAT:
RANKING THE
HALLOWEE N MOVIES Horror junkie Matt Emert looks back at all 10 films in the fright-filled franchise that changed the face of October 31. I first saw Halloween when I was 11. Little did I know, as melodramatic as it sounds, this low-budget slasher flick would change my life forever. impact, but even as an adult, Halloween still holds true as my all-time favorite film. With 36 years and 10 movies under its belt, the Halloween franchise has left an unparalleled imprint on the horror genre, so in honor of the recent release of Halloween: The Complete Collection (the ultimate box set that includes every film on Blu-ray), I revisited each installment of the iconic slasher series. NOTE: Spoilers below! 6

TRICK TREAT
HALLOWEEN (1978) – 10 To create an unsettling atmosphere that lasts the entirety of a horror film is no small feat, yet the original Halloween proves you can terrify audiences without showing a drop of blood. Simple yet frightening, the first installment of the series introduced us to a cold, calculating psychopath named Michael Myers who stalks a group of babysitters on the titular holiday before unleashing a night of terror in the quiet town of Haddonfield, Illinois. Even 36 years later, few slasher films have reached the virtually unattainable bar set by this movie.
HALLOWEEN II (1981) – 7 Picking up right where Halloween left off, this sequel continues Michael’s night of terror as he follows the only survivor, Laurie Strode, to the hospital to carve up a new set of victims. The body count’s bigger, and the film retains much of the suspense of the original, but there’s only so many times the Boogeyman can pace back and forth down a hallway before it gets stale. Revealing that Laurie is actually Michael’s long-lost sister was a clever twist, providing a purpose for Michael’s killing sprees that would endure throughout all the sequels. OBSESSION issue - BELLOmag.com

HALLOWEEN III: Season of the Witch (1982) – 2 This is the biggest WTF-worthy installment in the series. It has nothing to do with Michael Myers! Aside from taking place around Halloween and using the word in its title, it might as well be a stand alone film. The plot: A sinister company plans to kill children using devices in their masks that activate during a TV broadcast. Sound ridiculous? Now add an annoying theme song, weak characters, and insects crawling out of victims’ heads to create the lunacy that is Season of the Witch.
HALLOWEEN 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) – 7 A decade after the original was released, the series returned to its roots as Michael Myers awakens from a coma (and easily escapes custody, natch) to hunt down his 7-year-old niece and her adopted family. There are some great, spooky scenes in this semi-successful attempt to capture the formula of the original film, but it’s not as much fun watching a homicidal maniac chase after a child… after all, you know there’s no way they’d murder a 7-year old (even the Halloween series has its limits).
HALLOWEEN 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) – 4 One year later, Michael has survived the events of the 4th installment and a traumatized Jamie is in a psych ward, unable to speak. Unfortunately that doesn’t last, and the constant screaming and torturous chase in the final act makes this film almost unbearable to watch. And what’s with Michael’s mask? It looks as if he developed a receding hairline as a result of his many years on the prowl. A unique cliffhanger ending almost saves this movie, hinting that there may be more to the Myers saga.
HALLOWEEN: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) – 5 Michael’s story takes a turn for the complicated as all sorts of confusing elements are added to his backstory – a cult breeding evil, a conspiracy within the halls of his former asylum, and a new family in the Myers house that just happens to be relatives of the Strode clan. Oftentimes sequels try to add more elements to the story to keep it fresh, but when it comes to Halloween, I would have been quite content with a “more of the same” installment. The scenes unrelated to the cult have some redeeming qualities, and at least the heroine is no longer a little kid.
HALLOWEEN H20: Twenty Years Later (1998) – 9 Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode in a smart, thrilling sequel that gives a glimpse into what it’s like for someone 20 years after surviving a traumatizing attack. It’s simple – you fake your death, change your name, and move away! Although it took him awhile, Michael finds out where his sister’s been hiding all these years and comes after her and her son on his favorite day of the year. The opening scene, a rest stop incident, and much of the final act are scary good, making this a much-needed return to its roots - and the best sequel in the series.
HALLOWEEN: Resurrection (2002) – 3 As much as I will always welcome another Halloween sequel, had I known this would be the follow up to Halloween H20, I would have been satisfied with Laurie ending Michael’s reign of terror in the previous film. Not only do they kill her off within the first 15 minutes (she deserved much better), the film takes a complete detour and focuses on a bunch of webcam-wearing college kids who stay the night at the Myers’ house...for a reality show. Of course Michael isn’t pleased , and neither are we.
Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN (2007) – 6 Perhaps the most polarizing of the Halloween movies, Rob Zombie’s reimagining of this sacred slasher film actually scored points with me – not for its ability to scare audiences (it pales in comparison to the original), but for its originality and indepth look into Michael Myers’ background. Unfortunately the film also humanizes a killer that used to be more frightening when he had no emotion or personifying characteristics. Zombie adds his usual overabundance of violence to the film, but you can’t help enjoying updated versions of some of your favorite scenes from the original.
Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN II (2009) – 1 I’ve never been as disappointed in a Halloween film as I was with this trashy sequel to Rob Zombie’s remake. I can’t even begin to describe the pointless, uneventful direction this movie follows. From ludicrous visions of Michael’s dead mother guiding a white horse (an excuse to get Zombie’s wife in the film again) to ruthless violence for the sake of violence, to removing all of Laurie Strode’s likable qualities and barely making use of the iconic Myers mask, this sequel is a complete and utter mess. 33

FOR YEARS EDDIE KAYE THOMAS HAS ENTERED LIVING ROOMS WORLDWIDE AS “FINCH” THANKS TO 1999’S INSTANT CLASSIC, AMERICAN PIE. NOW, THE LOW-KEY ACTOR, WHO CALLS BROOKLYN “HOME SWEET HOME” SETS OUT TO THE WEST COAST, FOR THE CAUSE OF TV MAGIC, THIS TIME PLAYING A MEMBER OF THE SMARTEST CLAN IN ALL OF PLANET...YEAH, YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY. THOMAS WILL STAR IN SCORPION, A CBS SERIES FROM THE MAKERS OF YOUR FAVORITE ACTION-SUPERHERO MOVIES. FINCH WHO?
Tell me a bit about your character? I play Toby Curtis, who is the behavioral genius of the group. He’s a genius like the rest of them. He’s all about understanding people and reading people so I’m having fun with that. It’s been a lot of fun for me from the jump, from the first audition. It’s been uphill, getting the look for the character and what he feels like. You’re knee deep in filming now. What’s it like? It’s different than what I expected in the producers delivering what they say they will do. I would’ve been fine with it, but I was scared I would end up on a straight procedural. A mystery every week and then we’ll figure it out type thing. But no, this show hasn’t been like that at all. There’s a ton of story, and comedy, which I wasn’t expecting, and some really bold and extensive action as well. We’ve blown up a few things to put it lightly. I find myself shooting an action movie every nine days, which is exhausting and thrilling at the same time. Your character “Barry” on American Dad, what a hoot. I auditioned to play Steve, the son on the show. I used a voice that eventually became Barry’s voice. That voice just came out of me at the last minute at the audition. What I was trying to do was imitate Seth Green’s voice on Family Guy. I did that audition and I didn’t get that role, but about a week or so later, I get a call, and it was Brian from Family Guy. I had no idea that Seth MacFarlane’s normal voice was Brian. He asked me to read a few more lines and now we’re on our 10th season of American Dad. How often are you recognized on the streets for American Pie? I’d say someone calls me “Stifler’s mom”, probably averages to once a day. Sometimes it doesn’t happen every day, so it’ll happen twice on another day. More often than not, it’s just people thinking they know me, because they can’t really place where they recognize me from. It took me a few years to just tell them that it’s from American Pie. People usually think I went to high school with them, or they’ll ask me where I grew up. I used to feel like I was bragging when I told them they knew me from American Pie, but I’ve realized that it 35

just saves a lot of time to just tell them that right off the bat. It’s been 15 years now; it’s just become part of my life. What can viewers expect when tuning in to Scorpion? Fun. All the people involved with this show are known for creating a good time. Our team consists of people from Fast & Furious, Spiderman. Everyone involved knows how to make solid entertainment. The show gets ridiculous sometimes but it has the element of realism. It’s a great escape and I hope the fun that we’re having making it translates on screen. Finch who?

FALL’S MVP:
ERIC LADIN WORDS BY SCOTT YOUNGBAUER PHOTOS BY DAWN DICARLO
IS THERE A MORE IN-DEMAND CHARACTER ACTOR WORKING TODAY THAN THE CHARMING ERIC LADIN?
Since breaking out onto the scene in HBO’s Generation Kill, Ladin has found himself navigating the cable television circuit with memorable recurring roles on powerhouse shows like Mad Men, Big Love, The Killing, and most recently his portrayal of none other than J. Edgar Hoover on Boardwalk Empire. Soon it will only be a matter of time until there will not be a type of role that Ladin hasn’t played. Talking about his niche in television, and opening up to the different types of roles he was offered, Ladin tells me, “In a medium like TV or film, you really have to be able to identify with who you are as an actor, but also what people are buying. I was able to prove myself to the industry in other roles. Roles that they might not necessarily have seen me in before I started working.” Clearly Ladin must be onto something with the diverse types of characters he’s been cast as. Ladin’s latest film Annabelle (October 3rd), the spin-off to last year’s runaway horror hit The Conjuring follows the origins of the eponymous cracked porcelain doll that memorably opens the original. As a casual viewer of the genre he tells me, “I’ve always enjoyed 39
horror films, and enjoyed being scared. Silence of the Lambs was always one that I watched and thought it was as scary as it gets. Those kind of psychological thrills to me are always the most fun to watch.” Ladin is no rookie to making horror films, having worked with Wes Craven in the Los Angeles werewolf movie Cursed back in 2003.
dispatched to investigate the murderous events surrounding the antique doll? Hopefully Ladin’s detective will survive to see another sequel. Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper (December 25th) is next on the horizon for him, which fulfills the actor’s dream of working with the Hollywood legend. He stars alongside Bradley
In a medium like TV or film, you really have to be able to identify with who you are as an actor, but also what people are buying. Upon getting the script for Annabelle, Ladin had yet to watch The Conjuring but was immediately on board after viewing the film, knowing it was something he truly wanted to be a part of. John R. Leonetti, the cinematographer of The Conjuring, is taking the helm of directing Annabelle, and it looks to be one of the most anticipated horror films of 2014. Ladin says he was in awe of the whole experience of working with Leonetti, and was blown away by the dailies he was shown by the director while filming. Not too much can be divulged of his character upon writing this article, but Ladin says he plays a mustached detective. Perhaps
Cooper in the military drama based on the bestselling autobiography by Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. Until then there’s been a new member of the Ladin family in the form of a baby boy named Stormy. This is his second son with wife Katy, and he’s spent his time off this past summer welcoming little Stormy into the world. There’s no doubt in our minds that Eric is the ideal superdad - his cheery voice over the phone is a clear indicator. It’s challenging in acting to transition smoothly from TV to film, but Ladin is taking it in stride. Hollywood, meet your new supporting player. October 2014 - BELLO

to a premium moviegoing experience, and since we at Bello are no strangers to a good time at the movies - we took in 82 films on the big screen last year it’s about time we checked out this place and got in on some of its amenities. The at-your-seat waiter service is just as indulgent as it sounds. Having already ordered seasoned edamame, truffle fries, and portobello sliders for lunch in the lobby, we were able to have our leftovers brought directly to our theater seats. Still eyeing something from
the menu? Don’t worry, you’ll have time to order more (read further). Feeling a little adventurous with your popcorn options? Move past the usual butter and try their caramel flavor... or spicy chili imported from Mexico, where Cinépolis is headquartered. Additionally, they offer black-andwhite chocolate-covered gourmet popcorn and a full coffee bar where guests can order anything from cappuccinos to affogatos (take that, Starbucks).

And as autumn kicks in, there’s the signature seasonal cocktail menu to sample. Our pick: The Labyrinth, inspired by last month’s The Maze Runner, an exotic combo for adventurous palates: Muddled cherry tomatoes with Larceny bourbon and smoky Ancho Reyes liquor topped with Stella Artois lager. If that doesn’t do it for you, wait until next month to try Murphy’s Law, a concoction themed after Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (in theaters Nov. 7), a tantalizing blend of Jack Daniel’s whiskey, fresh blackberries and a hint of vanilla syrup. (Matthew McConaughey chaser not included.) However, if you’re more of a traditionalist and prefer something a little simpler, feel free to take advantage of the theater’s fullservice bar. Craving some red velvet cake during the second act of Gone Girl? Just press the button next to your reclining leather seat, and your server will bring it to you, along with some silverware. They’re extra discreet and will make sure not to bother anyone during your movie. One would expect a theater like this to be located right in the heart of Hollywood, but the company is pampering audiences in other Southern California locations, just outside San Diego and in Orange County (just south of Los Angeles). Naturally, there are plans to expand later this winter (Southern and central Florida, keep an eye out for a Cinepolis in your neck of the woods). Visit cinepolisusa.com to learn more.

“The Raven” (1990) The one that started it all. Based on Edgar Allen Poe’s gothic poem, it features Homer as the terrorized protagonist, Bart as the menacing raven, and James Earl Jones’ doleful narration that perfectly counterpoints the increasingly zany animation.
“King Homer” (1992) As told by Grampa Simpson, this charming King Kong parody captures the transformative love between the beautiful Marge Bouvier and the misunderstood King Homer.
“The Shinning” (1994) This sharp take on Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining finds Homer and the family moving into Mr. Burns’ mansion as winter caretakers. The pitch-perfect character cameos (Moe pops up as the ghostly bartender) and bleak ending make “The Shinning” a true ToH classic.
“Homer3” (1995) Also known as HomerCubed, this sci-fi segment follows Homer down the 3-D rabbit hole as he tries to escape Patty and Selma. The boundary-pushing computer-generated graphics and mind-blowing ending elevate this story beyond most newer Simpsons episodes.
“Citizen Kang” (1996) The Simpsons don’t have a lot of rules, but one of them is to avoid references that lock an episode in time. This one blows it all up by taking place during the 1996 presidential election and having Kang and Kodos invade Earth by taking over the bodies of rival candidates Bob Dole and Bill Clinton.
“Night of the Dolphin” (2000) Have you ever heard of the 1973 film Day of the Dolphin? Well, someone on The Simpsons had, and this cautionary tale of angry dolphins who take over Springfield is delightfully strange and endlessly quotable.
The Genesis Tub (1996) Lisa gets a rare starring role in this Twilight Zone-inspired segment about a science experiment that unintentionally produces a miniature race of intelligent beings. Spaceships are pretty cool, but tiny ones are even better!
“I Know What You Diddily-Iddily Did” (1999) An inspired parody of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Weekend at Bernie’s, this classic clip follows Homer as he accidentally runs over Ned Flanders (guess he forgot to turn the fog lights on) and is tormented by an unseen figure. The surprise ending turns the already terrific story up to 11.
“The Island of Dr. Hibbert” (2002) Springfield’s denizens get a zoological makeover in this brilliant send-up of The Island of Dr. Moreau, with the good Dr. Hibbert taking over as the megalomaniacal leader. From panther Marge to anteater Maggie, this is Treehouse of Horror at its best.
“Stop the World, I Want to Goof Off” (2003) Bart and Milhouse find a comic-book ad for a time-stopping watch and have fun terrorizing Springfield before the watch breaks, trapping everyone except them. Clever sight gags and Lisa’s smug jabs at a much-older Bart make this one a keeper.

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR PUMPKIN CARVING, CANDY CORN, AND CURLING UP UNDER A BLANKET IN THE DARK WITH A GOOD SCARY MOVIE. OUR RESIDENT FILM FIENDS SEARCHED FAR AND WIDE TO COME UP WITH SOME UNLIKELY, LESSER-KNOWN THRILLERS THAT SHOULD BE ADDED TO YOUR NETFLIX OR AMAZON LISTS THIS MONTH.

2. ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR
3. THE BURNING
This overlooked 1985 gem from Italian horror maesto Dario Argento (also known by its U.S. title, Creepers) is wildly inventive and stylishly creepy. Jennifer Connolly is smart and capable as a young woman whose unusual gift for communicating with insects proves helpful in catching a serial killer terrorizing a small Swiss village. Horror film mainstay Donald Pleasance lends extra gravitas.
This grim indie thriller, which jolted film festival audiences earlier this year (it won Best Editing at the Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles), focuses on an artist who suffers from some nasty visions after playing a dangerous game of Truth or Dare. Directed and edited by Ken Guertin, Behavior delivers a frightful punch that’ll stay with you long after the closing credits finish rolling. -
This 1981 slasher flick fired up the careers of Seinfeld alum Jason Alexander and Oscar winner Holly Hunter. (Who knew?) Although not as popular as other summer camp slaughterfests like Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp, it’s ablaze with thrills, chills and kills. A prank gone wrong leaves the camp caretaker disfigured and, once released from the hospital, he makes his way back to camp - and let’s just say it’s not for swimming lessons. Every fright flick fan knows this set-up, but The Burning executes a familiar formula in a surprisingly scary and sinister manner.

Christmas in October? Yes, please! Most people are not too familiar with the 1974 horror classic Black Christmas nor that it pioneered John Carpenter’s Halloween. This fun, twisted, and scary flick practically founded the slasher horror genre. Skip the 2006 remake, and see the real deal.

BRAD’S BUZZ

1. Gone Girl What more can be said about this David Fincher-directed, Ben Affleck-starring, Gillian Flynn-penned thriller? Oh yeah, if you’re not practically salivating with anticipation for its October 3rd release, it’s time to get a new hobby, because pop-culture really isn’t your thing.
2. American Horror Story: Freak Show An admitted scaredy cat, I wasn’t particularly a fan of the Emmy-winning anthology series until last year’s deliciously campy and thankfully - not nearly as gruesome or terrifying- Season Three: Coven. Now, upon hearing that the usual players (Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy) will once again be joined by diva dynamos (Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett), I have no choice but to stick around for this latest carnival-set installment. Please go easy on me, Ryan Murphy!!!
3. Charlie XCX ‘Sucker’ She’s been turning it out at clubs and raves throughout the UK since she was practically a tween, but it took guesting on Iggy Azalea’s summer smash, ‘Fancy’— not to mention playing one badass Tai in the video (R.I.P., Brittany Murphy) to really introduce Ms. XCX to the States. Since then, she’s watched her own single, ‘Boom Clap’ (released first on the soundtrack to another summer hit, The Fault In Our Stars) go top 10, and things are looking anything but sorry for this Charlie.
4. Nightcrawler Calm down, fanboys, Jake Gyllenhaal hasn’t finally decided to ditch the indie world for a Marvel style paycheck… Instead, the former Prince of Persia star, who’s reinvigorated his career as of late by returning to the juicy character work that first made him a star (End Of Watch, Prisoners, Enemy), plays a young man lured into the seedy world of LA freelance crime journalism. Sure, dimpled dreamboat Jake was fun, but this version of the Oscar-nominated actor undeniably packs a heftier punch.
5. Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynn ‘Rather Be’ This song feels like the perfect NYC summer rooftop party, complete with plenty of drag, drinks, and drugs… back when people did those sorts of things, of course.

THE SILVA LINING: A Conversation With Jason Silva About Sex, Exploration, Indiana Jones, and The Temples Of Awe BY BRENT LAMBERT, DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY CONTRIBUTOR If I was told I could bring three things with me to a deserted island, I would choose: food, water, and the one and only Jason Silva. Host of the Emmy Awardnominated series Brain Games on the National Geographic Channel, Jason Silva is also quite a big deal on Twitter, as well as being the creative force behind the hugely successful YouTube video series Shots Of Awe. In under three minutes a shot, his videos are some of the most irresistibly inspiring you will ever find online, and by the time you’ve finished each one, you still find yourself sitting comfortably in the palm of Jason’s hand. A man of many gifts, Jason is a philosopher, futurist, speaker, and one of the world’s fastest rising public intellectuals. His growing worldwide fan base and lists of engagements means he’s constantly traveling, but I was lucky enough to speak to him recently by phone as he was about to board a flight. ME: In a recent Shots Of Awe video you speak of how the hidden motive of the Instagram Generation is to experience the present moment as an anticipated memory and the power of Instagram as a tool for building a narrative map of our lives. Do you think there’s a link between being a good storyteller and having a richer, more fulfilling life? JASON: I definitely think so. The architecture of our minds seems to be one in which storytelling and the way we contextualize ourselves and extract pattern and meaning from our actions is through story. On a micro scale, any individual - whether they’re in a war zone or a “war zone of the trivial” as I like to say - still has drama. Everybody’s life has drama, and one’s ability to turn this drama into story will determine whether that life has meaning and purpose. And one of the things I find interesting is that those of us that are really sensitive - which I think is more and more of us - try to express what we are feeling through some kind of means of turning the mind inside out, whether it’s singing or writing, etc. But now, with the Instagram camera, every single one of us at any given moment can punctuate that moment. We can recognize that the moment is a passing one, defined by its transience. We should seek for the ones that feel like they should be meaningful or worthy of celebration or contemplation. And that allows us to add vivid frames of sequence to our lives. And these are OBSESSION issue - BELLOmag.com
cool because they live in the web and in our pockets. They’re always there for us to reflect upon. ME: It also involves us not just telling our life stories in the present moment, but also preserving them for the future as well. JASON: We’re always preserving the story, even through basic memory, right? There are certain things that we’re committing to memory, and the truth of the matter is our memories change all the time. We also edit our memories based on what we want to believe about them, and our sort of social, cultural operating system. But I also think technology - echoing Terrence McKenna’s idea - is about exteriorizing our nerve net. Turning ourselves inside out. Impregnating the world with mind. Whether it’s cinema which, as Gene Youngblood describes, reflects mankind’s historical drive to manifest his consciousness outside of his mind. We do that with cinema.
We do that with ideas. But I also think we’re doing it with all technology. The smartphone is our mind inside out and looking at pictures is looking at our own memories as edited and anchored by us. It’s a sort of dialogue with our past selves, and I think it’s fascinating. ME: In another Shots Of Awe video you talk about how technology is expanding our field of possibilities, and how humanity is a process. We are not beings, but “becomings” as you describe. Considering you’re in an airport right now and you’re about to fly 30,000 feet above the Earth, I thought it would be fitting to get your thoughts on the relationship between exploration and human possibility. For instance, James Cameron pushing the limits of deep sea exploration, or Elon Musk and Richard Branson pushing the limits of deep space exploration. What is it about exploration that is so inherently human? JASON: I think there are two sides to us. We are the naked monkey, and the naked monkey gets a hit of dopamine each time he partakes in novel behaviors, the earliest dimension of that novelty being the sexual dimension. You get a hit of dopamine for spreading your seed wisely...at least the males do. That was what the novelty reward system was for (and why new sexual partners were so exciting for our ancestors). We’ve also become cultural beings that live in a world of memes and ideas, so all of the sudden we have these brains with biological reward systems that were once used purely for reproduction, that are now being co-opted to meet cultural ends. Now novelty becomes about exploration and beyond - all these other things that have nothing to do with sex. Some people get a hit of dopamine from expanding
48
their Twitter network. Some people get a hit of dopamine from starting an airline. Some people get a hit of dopamine from probing the surface of Mars with a robot. That is how we now express our thirst for novelty. Cultural evolution is still evolution. I think it’s fascinating that there are so many ways we essentially “mate” now. We no longer just mate with sperm and egg. We mate by extending ourselves into the exoskeletons that probe the surface of Mars or the wings of an aircraft that fly though the sky. All of those things are manifestations of our imagination and linguistic intent. Our DNA is now cultural and technological, and we spread it through our divine engineering, we might say. ME: In another one of your videos you discuss the power of cinema, and the deep inner personal impact of a great film. As well as the idea that cinema has a responsibility to craft work that thrusts the human spirit towards the numinous. If you were to look back on your youth, what was the one film that really captured your imagination and propelled your spirit forward unlike any other? JASON: Oh man, I would say Indiana Jones, The Princess Bride, The NeverEnding Story, The Goonies. Yeah, when I was a little kid those were some of the big ones. ME: Have you ever thought of directing a film, and if so, what narrative or ideas would you explore? JASON: I have thought about it. I think making film would be a wonderful undertaking. I’m a big fan of Richard Linklater and his philosophical conversation films like Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight, which I think are genius films. I think it’s always fascinating to watch people tackling the big ideas related to life, being naked emotionally on screen. That’s interesting to me. ME: I really fell in love with Boyhood, and had to watch it twice, I loved it so much. I know you loved it as well. What was it about Boyhood that most moved you? JASON: Well, I think what was fascinating was the level of commitment to tell a story that unfolds in time. 49
Part of what cinema does is it forms time. It allows the viewer to assume the viewpoint of a character and the mind that they temporarily project is free from the normal constraints and of Euclidean space and time. Once you’ve succumbed to the immersive power of the film, you can travel through time, wherever the director wants to take you. In Boyhood they actually take a character and compress 12 years of his life into one film. I think the experience of going through that kind of time compression is a fascinating endeavor. ME: This interview is for our annual Obsession issue, and I wanted to talk to you about the nature of obsession. I think it’s safe to say there’s an evolutionary advantage to obsessive states since every human being experiences them at one point or another. What do you think the advantages of obsessive states might be, and in what ways would you say obsession and imagination intersect? JASON: I think obsession can play out in socially acceptable and socially unacceptable ways. Some obsessions lead to no-nos, but I also think that certain obsessions have led to breakthroughs. Whether it’s someone obsessed with a scientific mystery that they want to uncover, or someone obsessed with a mathematical equation they want to solve, or how people are obsessed with unlocking the secrets of the Universe. I think a lot of that type of obsession is kind of the most romantic quality of the human spirit, that we don’t give up. Those obsessions can spark big shifts in cognitive ecstasy. And I think obsession and imagination can definitely intertwine. And again, the end result will always depend on whether that obsession is positive or negative. ME: One company that elicits more obsessive behavior than any other is Apple. When you see the frenzy surrounding a new Apple product launch, what do you think is happening psychologically and culturally when “Apple frenzy” peaks? JASON: There is the idea that technology is providing us with our mental scaffolding. We design our tools and they design us. So I think people get excited for something like an iPhone because they know they
are essentially getting a mindware upgrade. These objects can affect the space of our imagination, the space of our possibility. So I think when you have something like that going through an upgrade, people are going to experience a kind of religious fervor. ME: So keeping with the idea of obsession, is there any other film you’ve seen recently that stayed with you for a long time? JASON: Yes, Enemy with Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s a film about the concept of doppleganger, based on the book The Double. It’s about the idea of the second self, or the shadow self. The Jungian subconscious, and the ensuing paranoia when another “you” takes over your life. I loved the film. I love all films that make you question reality. ME: What piece of music have you had on repeat the most often lately? JASON: I really like the movie I Origins, a metaphysical romance about reincarnation. And I love the soundtrack especially. There was a song in there called “Dust It Off” which is amazingly haunting and brilliant. And there was one song I had never heard of before called “Motion Picture Soundtrack”. It is absolutely rivetingly beautiful. There’s also an instrumental piece from the film V For Vendetta which is also used in the trailer for Interstellar. It’s called “Evey Reborn”, and it’s one of the most magnificent songs I’ve ever heard. It literally gets under my skin every time. ME: Which book or books have you obsessed the most over recently that blew your mind wide open? JASON: I’m a big fan of the book Techgnosis by Erik Davis. It’s absolutely brilliant. I also love Ernest Becker’s book called The Denial of Death. I’m also loving the book Shivers Down Your Spine: Cinema, Museums & The Immersive View by Alison Griffiths. It’s about technologies that mediate our encounters with ecstasy. Such as cathedrals that are designed to a certain point of reference and awe. IMAX theaters as well. Spaces that create an immersive transformation in the person, taking them away from everyday concerns and taking them to another place. I’m obsessed with how they do that. October 2014 - BELLO

Thanks to the TV Gods, shirtless sightings of Ian Bohen aren’t hard to come by. On Teen Wolf, where Bohen plays Peter Hale, a smartalek with killer biceps--any word from his character usually comes with a snarky remark stuck to its back. Bello sat down with the onscreen, sometimes douchey, but super-hot warewolf, as he discussed his latest fixations.
TV Show: “Game of Thrones. I binge watched 3 seasons in 2 days when I first started. That’s a lot of pizza, by the way. Did the same with House of Cards and am fiending for the next seasons.” Scent: “The right perfume on the right woman is inescapable. So is my favorite scotch. (Lagavulin). And lilies. My dad always has fresh cut lilies on the counter, and I love the way they smell.” Car: “Right now the Audi SR 5 is on my wish list. Can you use kickstarter to buy a car???” Location: “I think Italy is the best place in the world. Whatever I’m up to, I generally am trying to figure out how to justify that Rome is on the way there...” Anything you want to mention: “Lastly, obsessed with the music of Banks right now. One seriously talented girl. New album is on repeat at my place.”

Royal-ish:
Torrance Coombs WORDS BY DIO ANTHONY PHOTOS BY AMANDA ELKINS
LAST FALL A NEW ROYAL FAMILY WAS PRESENTED TO AMERICANS, IN THE FORM OF THE CWS SEXY HISTORIC TEEN SOAP REIGN. (DROOL WORTHY BALL GOWNS AND BOYS PROVIDED!) BY THE END OF THE SEASON THERE WAS EVEN A ROYAL WEDDING THAT HAD TAKEN PLACE--ISH. NOW A FULL CALENDAR YEAR LATER, THE NETWORK RETURNS WITH A SECOND SEASON OF THE STEAMY DRAMA, THE STORY OF AN ADOLESCENT MARY STUART, QUEEN OF SCOTLAND (ADELAIDE KANE).
Torrance Coombs plays “Bash”, illegitimate son of the King of France, stuck in a love triangle between his half-brother, Francis (Toby Regbo), heir to the throne, and the gentle but fearless Mary. As one could imagine, beginning a second season presents different challenges than those already in place. Coombs, for one, was happy to know people actually cared. “When it hasn’t aired yet, that’s what it’s like. You just don’t know if people are going to care. I’ve done that. You work really hard on something and once you present it to the world there’s a collective “meh”, explains the Canadian actor. “To have the show come out and get the following that it did, and then an early renewal for a second season was a huge vote of confidence. Now we’re making something we know people dig. There’s confidence in that. Also going into the gig the first time I was just like, ‘Please don’t recast me.’”24-episodes later and there’s no other actor fans of the series could see play Bash, the outsider with a heart of gold and a pro59
tection streak. Instead fans are rooting for Bash in the battle for Mary’s heart. The series has been praised for its portrayal of female relationships, particularly Adelaide Kane’s Mary and her close-knit group of ladies-inwaiting. Mary and her friends lift each other up and respect each other without judgment of what any of them has been up to around the corners and halls of the royal court. In an interview earlier this year Kane sat down with BELLO and spoke of welcoming the responsibility of playing Mary and her newfound duty as a role model for girls. Coombs on the other hand has no such thoughts, as his character, from his name to his hair, is purely fictional. “I thought to myself, “What does it mean to be a bastard?” And, in this context, heavily involved in the royal family, but without that responsibility. I really just try and make it as personal as I can. I’m not beholden to any kind of historical standard; I just get to make him me.” If there’s anything Coomb’s character became known for besides his brooding
selflessness, it was his eyes - those enchanting emerald green eyes - both of which will be back next season. With the forth-coming second season, Coombs offered his own predictions for season two and among those was the topic of The Plague, a disease that claimed many lives during its run. And not to be forgotten. Kenna and Bash have been left with a child. “Bash has also killed both his father and his mentor, so I wonder what he thinks of all that,” he jokes. “And of course, Francis is now the new King, so I’m guessing my character will be there to help him out. I think we’ve restored the brotherly love between them in the show so my hope is that he’ll be protecting him now that he’s in this new position.” One thing fans of the series can be sure of is that Coomb’s accent will be back, even better than before. Having watched ample episodes of his show, I congratulated him for having fooled me into thinking he was actually English. To which he replied, “I was kind of an accent geek in theater school.” October 2014 - BELLO

USA’S UNDERCOVER COP DRAMA
GRACELAND OPENED UP WITH A SOLID FIRST SEASON, AND AN EVEN BETTER SECOND ONE. TO PUT IT SIMPLY, THE SERIES FOLLOWS A SERIES OF HOT PEOPLE WITH INTERESTING STORYLINES. FOLLOWING A JAW DROPPING SECOND SEASON FINALE, BRANDON JAY MCLAREN DISHES ON HIS CHARACTER, AND LOOKS BACK ON THEIR ACCLAIMED SOPHOMORE SEASON.
Favorite thing about Playing Dale Jakes “This season has been great in particularly for me because Dale gets to be on the highest of highs. He gets his son back and is able to play with him at the park, but then again, he goes through the lowest of lows, and everything in between. So, as an actor, it’s really amazing to be able to play such a broad spectrum of emotions. That’s also credit to the writers, who have written him so well rounded and so full. What was the energy like coming back for a second season? It was a little strange. We had a very long Hiatus, and so it had been a while since last seeing each other. The fun thing was, it seemed like once we got back together, everything just fell into place. The very first scene of season two that we shot is the scene where Mike comes home, and we’re all playing a game in the living room. We were all there, laughing and finding our characters again with one-another. Stay on the lookout for News on Season 3 of Graceland

TREVOR JACKSON: ASPIRE TO INSPIRE WORDS BY JEROD WILLIAMS PHOTOS BY MARC CARTWRIGHT
“WORLD DOMINATION FOR ADMIRATION, WITH ADMIRATION COMES INSPIRATION, WITH INSPIRATION COMES A WHOLE NEW NATION.” IS THE MOTTO 18 YEAR OLD, SINGER/ACTOR TREVOR JACKSON TALKS ABOUT WHILE PURSUING HIS GOALS AND CHASING HIS DREAMS. IN THE REALM OF ACTING, YOU MAY HAVE SEEN THIS INDIANAPOLIS NATIVE IN A HANDFUL OF TELEVISION SERIES SUCH AS EUREKA, AUSTIN & ALLY AND CRIMINAL MINDS.
For a majority of his young life, Jackson has been a performer and has always been on his grind. In addition to acting, his ultimate passion is gradually making its way into the forefront of his life and starting to take fruition and that is music. With a major record deal with Atlantic Records in place along with the previous release of his EP #NewThang and a full album coming out at the end of the year, Jackson is ready to conquer the world and unleash what he’s truly capable of. Trevor Jackson’s career began when he started performing and dancing across the country and competing in several competitions. “I was three years old when I started tap dancing. I did a local Christmas show for about three months in Indiana. While doing that show, someone mentioned to my mom that I should try to be in THE LION KING show that’s on Broadway. I had just seen it the year before when I was six years old. My mom claims to say that during the whole show, I was like, “Mom, I can do that! I’m going to do that.” As it turned out that the same kid I saw on Broadway, I auditioned for his part and ended up taking his spot 67
in the show and did it for three years until the show ended.” When the show ended for Jackson, his family picked up and moved to Los Angeles for him to pursue his entertainment career. “I moved to L.A. in 2008 and landed some television gigs. I got to play a doctor on HARRY’S LAW and play a psycho on CRIMINAL MINDS and it was fun to play that character and be able to go to that place and tap into that part of the brain. While acting, I started pursuing music labels as well because music is a huge part of my life and that aspect was missing. There were a lot of
In the meantime, before the release of his new album, Jackson offers up to his fans preview teasers of two tracks from the new album, “Me Likey” and “Good Girl, Bad Girl” that can be bought on iTunes. “Basically, the album, it’s Mrs. Jackson, and that “meaning” whoever picks it up. She ranges from any age. It’s showing how you should be treated and showing all the trials and tribulations that come with a relationship. Every song is about anyone that has at least felt once in their life they were in love and knowing that, regardless, you’re still going to be together. You’re still

I’m about to put out my debut album this year and I’m so excited that all the hard work I’ve put in is really paying off.”
going to be Mrs. Jackson to me.” When we asked him who he’s worked with on this project, he remains tight-lipped about the collaborations as he isn’t really allowed to say at the moment, but October 2014 - BELLO

he did offer up both T-Pain and Diggy. “Diggy is featured on “My Girl” and we are currently on the Who Else But Us! promotional tour.” When speaking of goals and values, Jackson puts out some sage advice in the universe about what it is like to be a role model. “I feel like this time we get is a gift. We need to take it seriously and change things because a lot of people don’t get the privilege to do that.” He goes even further to elaborate, “When you inspire someone, they strive to be like you and they want to aspire to be like you. If I make good decisions, promote the right thing, and try to be the best person I can be for this world and find my purpose, then it will inspire so many others to find their purpose.” In discussing his everyday life on anything that gets his “mind off the now”, you’ll find Trevor partaking in hobbies such as skateboarding, golf, basketball and PlayStation. “Occasionally, I like to work out. (Stresses.) I need to workout more, it’s getting bad. I love to EAT, power EAT! I would eat P.F. Chang’s all day if I could.” When asked about future upcoming projects, Jackson is still auditioning for different things and if the time is right and the role is right, then he’ll definitely go back into the acting realm, but for now he’s mainly focused on the album and trying to get as many people to hear it as he can. The versatile entertainer talks somberly, “At the end of the day, as long as you are being true to yourself, the transition can always be easy. Things are only as hard as you make them, especially if you love doing it, then nothing should ever be able to stop you from working hard and being the best at it you can be. People respect hard work.”

FASHION ABOUT TWO AND HALF YEARS AGO, EVERYTHING CHANGED FOR JAKE MCDORMAN. A NATIVE TEXAN, HE’D MOVED TO HOLLYWOOD AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 16, BUT AFTER SPENDING NEARLY A DECADE BOUNCING BETWEEN BIG PARTS IN BUZZY BUT CANCELED NETWORK SITCOMS (RUN OF THE HOUSE, QUINTUPLETS, ARE YOU THERE, CHELSEA?), SMALL ROLES ON BLOCKBUSTER PRIMETIME PROCEDURALS (HOUSE M.D., CSI: MIAMI, COLD CASE), AND EVEN THE OCCASIONAL FEATURE FILM SPOT (AQUAMARINE, LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD), THE ACTOR FOUND HIMSELF AT A CAREER CROSSROADS. “I turned 25 and decided that I really wanted to feel much more in control of my work,” he recalls. “I wanted to start going after things that I’d really be excited to be a part of and promote.” It’s not that he wasn’t proud of his résumé (which also included a four year stint on the beloved former ABC Family dramedy, Greek)... McDorman just knew that professionally, he’d only begun to scratch the surface. “I wanted to feel like I was honoring my artistic integrity and really pushing myself as an actor.” he says, explaining the calculated career redirection that would ultimately facilitate his falling in love with his craft again. That meant veering towards edgier fare like HBO’s The Newsroom (where he played a GOP Rep) and most recently Showtime’s Shameless (where he had his heart memorably crushed by Emmy Rossum’s Fiona Gallagher last season) after engaging in some decidedly pay cable activities, of course. “When you’re (cast), they tell you, You’re on ‘Shameless’ - there is potential that any character at any given point might have to drop trou,” he recalls in typically animated fashion. “We couldn’t possibly imagine a scenario where this would apply to you, however you’re on the show and we get everybody to sign a release…” Naturally, such a scenario occured during his very first episode… “I was so excited to be a part of the show that I was like, Oh sure, I am your meat puppet and you can treat me as such! And about a week before shooting I got a voicemail from Mark Mylod, the producer,” - and he slips into a rather effective British accent - “Hello, Jake, this is Mark Mylod, I’m calling to talk about your penis…” McDorman didn’t end up doing full frontal, but the part - nudity and all - afforded quite an 77
unforgettable experience for the actor. “Working with that caliber of people like (Executive Producer) John Wells, Bill Macy, and Emmy, is just incredible. There’s a real sense of family and a high level of respect on that show.” And fortunately, much of that good juju has followed McDorman to his next project, the upcoming ABC Fall comedy, Manhattan Love Story. “It’s kind of like an homage to every romantic comedy, especially ones that take place in New York,” he reveals about the much-anticipated half hour show, in which he and Analeigh Tipton play a couple navigating new love in the Big Apple, complete with all of the requisite euphoria and uncertainty that accompanies it. Unlike most other rom coms, however, Manhattan Love Story invites the audience to intimately experience the pair’s highs and lows, thanks to some decidedly personal voice-overs via the two actors. A challenge, most definitely, but one McDorman embraced as wholeheartedly as he did bearing his butt on Shameless. “What’s cool about it is you actually get to act out the subtext of the scene,” he says. “These are your most personal thoughts that don’t have to be held accountable by anybody… Yeah, the audience can hear them, but the characters don’t know that, so this is totally private, horrible -- as nerdy, frantic, or sincere as you want it to be.” It helps that in Tipton he’s found his perfect foil, a leading lady whose apple-cheeked appeal is every bit as undeniable as his own. “It’s not hard to find really charming and enchanting aspects of her,” he admits, revealing that they have become especially close – along with everyone else in the cast – as a result of having to relocate
from Los Angeles to NYC to film the comedy. “Everybody is going through this first New York experience together. We all live just a couple blocks away from each other, so it’s been really excellent. When you shoot on location, no matter what you’re doing, you’re still in the same world as the show.” And if everything goes according to plan, it’s a world that McDorman will continue to inhabit for seasons to come, minus the occasional detour onto the big screen, like in this Christmas’s American Sniper opposite Bradley Cooper, directed by living legend, Clint Eastwood (“Everything you’ve heard about him is true. He’s a machine; he shoots fast, but it’s Clint Eastwood, you don’t show up unprepared.”), or for the upcoming comedies, Me Him Her and See You In Valhalla. In the meantime, however, you can find the actor adjusting to life in his new city, even using a certain popular online swap and shop site - despite potentially terrifying any Lifetime movie junkie who remembers him as the titular star of the 2011 ripped from the headlines flick, The Craigslist Killer. And just in case you were worried that he’s completely distanced himself from his past, Jake McDorman is happy to share a humorous example of why that’ll never happen. “I was in the AT&T Store not too long ago, and a little girl came up to me and asked if I was an actor and where she’d seen me. So I awkwardly started listing off my credits and she’s like no, no, no. Finally, I’m like, I don’t know what to tell you, and she walks back over to her mom. Then, about halfway through my transaction at the counter, from across the store, she just screams, Oh my God, you’re a killer! Craigslist Killer! Watch out everyone there’s a killer in here!” October 2014 - BELLO

Powder and Paint PHOTOS BY TAMAR LEVINE
Fashion photography has always been an interesting challenge for me. By its nature, it carries an expectation of a specific type of beauty which isn’t always naturally aligned with my own personal - and broader - definition of beauty. To me, beauty is timeless, or at least contained by everchanging trends. Beauty can be either simple or eloquent, sometimes visual but always soulful. In contrast I feel like fashion/editorial/media beauty is very visual and subject to assumptions that can change at any time. I love finding ways to play fashion’s expectations of beauty against themselves. I feel we need to openly acknowledge that women have a long, difficult, and complicated relationship with beauty and this series is my exploration of that.

“La Dolce Vita” BY STEVEN CARVER
JEWELRY CAN BE CONSIDERED A FORM OF ALCHEMY SINCE A SPECIAL KIND OF CHEMISTRY IS ACHIEVED ONCE DISSONANT PIECES COME TOGETHER. MADE OF MULTIPLE ELEMENTS, THE STONES AND METALS ARE WORTHLESS TO CRAFTSMEN WHEN LEFT IN THEIR NATURAL STATE, YET WHEN THEIR BEAUTY IS CHISELED AWAY, MAGIC HAPPENS. And while constructing a piece of wearable art isn’t an easy task, some make it simpler than others. The ability to place stones in a straightforward setting is commonplace. While some call them classics, others refer to them as safe. That’s not the case with Faraone Mennella. Established by Roberto Faraone Mennella and Amedeo Scognamiglio, Faraone Mennella draws inspirations from the designers’ Italian heritage and familial excursions from their childhood. Think La Dolce Vita, Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida, hourglass curves and the epitome of 60s European glamour. Their upbringings were an essential part to their – eventual – brand of glamorous jewelry. Mennella was raised in an environment of beauty on the family estate near the footsteps of Mount Vesuvius, while Scognamiglio had six generations of coral and cameo manufacturers running through his blood (not to mention being the founder of Amedeo, a collection of modern-day cameos and artisanal jewels). In 2001, a chance meeting with stylist Patricia Field gave them their big break, leading to stockists in some of the most luxurious shops in the world. Their sensuous shapes are a contemporary interpretation of what traditional jewelry has always been, adapting it for today’s modern lifestyles.

Exclusively crafted by skilled artisans, the line takes gemstones from around the world whose natural beauty inspires the designers to create master works of wearable art. A cut diamond captures the light, allowing it to sparkle but only a true artisan can find a way to refract it from a smooth, polished surface. The colored stones have life and personality. With months of research, sketching, and laborious handiwork, each piece is made to be unique, yet imminently wearable. Project Tradeshow in Las Vegas BY JASMINE VO, SENIOR LIFESTYLE EDITOR
I’ve been a working as a lifestyle stylist for over six years and one thing many of my male clients often tell me is how they wish there was more selection in menswear. Clearly they have never been to Project. For insiders of the industry, Project is a tradeshow where contemporary brands and buyers can meet face to face to view their collection. When a designer creates a collection, there is anywhere between 50 to 200 pieces that gets made into samples for view. Only the popular pieces that get chosen from the buyers get made while the rest of the samples never get to make their debut into the world. It’s a dog eat dog process for each garment but that’s just how the fashion business works.

ALLURING, GORGEOUS, AND TANTALIZING ARE JUST A FEW ADJECTIVES THAT COULD BEST DESCRIBE MARIANA KLAVENO. THIS STATUESQUE BEAUTY WITH A HEART OF GOLD HAILS FROM WASHINGTON STATE. WITH A DECADE OF MINOR ROLES ON TELEVISION SERIES SUCH AS ER, HAWAII FIVE-0 AND DEXTER UNDER HER BELT, IT WASN’T UNTIL SHE FELL UNDER THE RADAR OF ALAN BALL AND CAUGHT, “LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE” AS SHE SO ELOQUENTLY PUTS IT, LANDING THE DELICIOUSLY SINFUL ROLE OF BILL COMPTON’S MAKER, LORENA KRASIKI IN SEASON 2 OF THE HBO SERIES TRUE BLOOD.
In addition to TRUE BLOOD, she was also best known as the devious Peri Westmore from the hit series DEVIOUS MAIDS. Bello Mag caught up with the extremely busy actress to discuss life, the evolution of her acting career, playing juicy over-the-top roles, her life on-and-off camera, as well as her upcoming role as Detective Janice Lawrence on the CBS thriller STALKER. “I was born in a rural eastern town in Washington called Palouse which is considered farmland. My dad is a wheat farmer, so I kind of grew up in the middle of nowhere in a very sort of idyllic and picturesque setting with farm animals running around and acres of land. I’m still really close to a lot of people I grew up with and I love going back home and seeing everything again and smelling the same smells. Palouse was a lovely place to grow up.” When asked about how she “stumbled” into the entertainment industry, she recalled memories of running around outside her property, acting out movies 113
and performing plays with her stuffed animals. All the nerdy and obscure things all budding young starlets do when they become actresses. It wasn’t until this high school valedictorian decided to go to college that she would actualize her vision and go into the drama program. “I kind of quietly nursed the dream of becoming an actress and I said if I still feel encouraged by the end of college, I’ll make the trek to Los Angeles and give it a go. Luckily, my family was incredibly supportive.” When we talked to her about her breakout role on TRUE BLOOD, she had nothing but humbling things to say about her experience with the hit show. “Working on TRUE BLOOD was a criminal amount of fun. [Laughs.] It was one of those dream jobs that really strikes a chord with audience members. It was massive, funny, sexy, and sort of fresh and edgy. To be a part of that show was such a gift and to live in that kind of fantastical world that Alan [Ball] created, where you get
to have these outrageous costumes and stunts and special effects, was something you can only fantasize about being in this business. I loved every minute of playing Lorena. People loved to hate her and I saw her as this tragic figure obsessed with a man who would never love her back.” When bringing up the one infamous head-turning, graphic scene with her and Bill [played by Stephen Moyer], she exclaims how it will go down in infamy forever. “It was certainly shocking. I think they were kind of going for shock value and I think they succeeded.” Fast forward to Klaveno snagging yet another juicy role of rich, coldhearted, self-absorbed Peri Westmore in the television series DEVIOUS MAIDS. “I actually think that she’s [Peri] more of a villain than Lorena [Laughs]. I loved getting to do a little bit more of a comedy arc with the character of Peri. It was definitely still villainous territory, but the style and the tone of it were obviously much lighter and Marc [Cherry] has October 2014 - BELLO

such a specific voice and it was fun to kind of hone that skill a bit.” In addition to working with such heavy hitters as Alan Ball and Marc Cherry, she can now add working with the multi-talented, Kevin Williamson (SCREAM and THE FOLLOWING) to her list when the show STALKER premieres on October 1st. “I hope fans are terrified when they watch this show. We play detectives that focus mostly on stalking cases. Kevin is such a genius at creating these tense, unsettling, scary moments. There are a lot of the SCREAM elements to it and you will feel the hairs stand on the back of your neck and jump out of your seat. It’s that kind of element. I get to be a good guy and she’s very sort of brazen, sassy, and self-assured. She basically tells it like it is and there are elements of me in this character which makes it fun. I get to bring a little comedy to a lot of the heavier psychological detective scenes which breaks it up a little bit. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.” When Klaveno is not on her daily grind, you will find her doing one of the things that she loves to do and that is baking. “I absolutely love being in the kitchen. I love cooking so I am all over the Food Network and Pinterest. It’s one of my greatest joys to crack open a brandnew cookbook and go through and decide what to make. On STALKER, everyone is so healthy. Maggie Q has one of the cleanest diets of anyone I’ve ever met, so I’m excited to try and venture into gluten-free vegan and exploring healthier options. I also love putting on music and getting lost in my kitchen cooking.” When she’s not baking, she’s also spending quality time with her husband of two and a half years. “I pretty much keep my personal life private and respect him and don’t involve him in goofy social media stuff.” As for future projects for this up-andcoming starlet, you will be able to catch STALKER on Wednesday nights on CBS starting October 1st. Klaveno recently completed filming a movie called West of Redemption which will be submitted and shopped around to various festivals. The future is looking deliciously bright for this multi-faceted actress.

Spotlight on the
Artist!
BY NICOLE WALMSLEY, BEAUTY EDITOR Featuring: Rae Morris, Makeup Artist Instagram @raemorrismakeup |Website www.raemorris.com | Twitter @raemorrismakeup
RAE MORRIS IS A TALENTED MAKEUP ARTIST WHO SET OUT TO CREATE THE TOOLS THAT SHE COULDN’T FIND ON THE MARKET. SHE’S CREATIVE, INNOVATIVE AND CRAFTY. SHE TELLS US HOW SHE GOT STARTED IN THE MAKEUP INDUSTRY AND HOW HER DREAM FOR THE PERFECT BRUSH LED TO THE CREATION OF A VERY UNIQUE AND CLEVER BRUSH SYSTEM. When did you start doing makeup and how did you choose it as a career? I started really young - I was a hairdresser first. I started at 14 years of age and then makeup soon followed. I never thought I was good at makeup, so I think I just applied myself a little bit more. Any time I wasn’t cutting hair I was painting someone’s face. Then through fate I met and was trained by the late Richard Sharah. He is still, to this day, one the most talented makeup artist to walk the planet. He was David Bowie’s makeup artist and was famous for creating all of the “Ziggy Stardust” looks for his clips. What part of your job do you enjoy the most? The talented teams I get to work with. I know that on most jobs I’m working with photographers who shoot Vogue covers for a living, stylists and hair dressers who are at the top of their game, and the most amazing faces you’ll ever see. Plus, the locations we get to go to are places I’d never even think to travel. The ultimate thing, however, is seeing my work published in magazines all over the world. How would you describe your style as a makeup artist? I love the “Not the Norm makeup.” Yes, I love doing pretty, fresh clean looks, but I also love to push the boundaries a little.

Who are the artists you look up to? I love Peter Phillips and Pat McGrath. What are your top 5 go-to products right now? I love my Rae Morris “radiance” brush from my Magnetic Brush Range found on www.raemorris.com. It just creates the most flawless face no matter what foundation you use.-I also love the “Ellis Fass” Crème Eye Shadows. It lasts all day long and the colors are to die for. You cannot choose a bad color, seriously! I love DMK foundation. It’s a new discovery for me and it actually calms down sensitive or acne-prone skin while you wear it. I love that it has a velvety finish (perfect for our “selfie” obsession) and it seems to last longer than most other foundations. It’s flawless; I use all the Shinto shades. I still can’t go past L’Oreal Paris’ telescopic mascara. I just love the comb wand; it’s my number one favorite mascara and has been for a long time. Lastly, Ruby Woo Mac lipstick. It’s a neutral red, meaning it suits all skin tones. So whether you’re cool or warm it suits everyone. I love the intensity and the matte finish (I think matte reds can look more modern). All time favorites tip or trick? Testing lipstick on the back of your fingertip. There is a myth that you shouldn’t test lipsticks on the back of your hand, since your skin tone there is not even close to that of your lips so you won’t get a true color. Nonsense! Always test on your fingertip. It’s the same color and texture as your lips
117
(with a more blue/red undertone). That way, you will see the exact shade that lipstick will achieve. What trends are you excited about for this season? All the monochromatic tones. Even though brown shades can seem boring, they achieve such a modern and sophisticated look. It’s about highlighting and contouring features instead of filling the face with too much color. Tell us about your brush line and how that has changed things for you. To me, makeup is all about brushes, and this is why I created the RAE MORRIS MAGNETIC BRUSH RANGE! You can do more with minimal product and an incredible brush range than you can with cotton buds and drawers full of makeup. After literally using every makeup brush on the planet, I still couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for. It sounds strange, but I felt I was bringing more to the brush than the brush was bringing to me! Also, after hand shaving already expensive brushes that were readily available yes, I’d shave them to a point - this was life changing. When you use a pointed brush shape and the hair is super soft, two things happen. One, they blend in half the time (yes, all square shape brushes leave a harsh edge that you then have to blend). And two, the super softness stops that annoying skin drag you tend to get when trying to blend on eyelids that are slightly hooded or have excess skin. The magnets, well, I love organization. I love being able to reach over and grab what I need easily. I want to focus on the makeup, not digging around in a bag or a brush roll trying to find the brush I’m looking for. So, the original magnetic concept came about through trying to find better ways to organize and store my brushes. But as we have evolved into the magnetic concept, we have tailored it to offer a number of other benefits. Hygienically, it is a superior system. I may work with up to 10 models in a single day (times that by 10 if we’re doing
a runway show), so I don’t want the bristles to be in contact with anything but faces. Not the bench, not a brush roll which can also bend your brushes. Only faces. We achieve this with the Magnetic range because the brushes stand upright on their own. Also, I clean my brushes after every face, so to dry them I can just hang them upside down on any surface a magnet will stick to - it’s so practical! I can’t wait to see the day when I walk into a woman’s bathroom and see the brushes standing up on a plate, rather than lying in dried soap and leftover toothpaste on the bathroom sink. :) I designed the plate to be the perfect size to not take up too much space (you can always have 2 plates if you have more space) and so that it’s easy to travel with. What is your makeup pet peeve? Lack of hygiene, seeing filthy makeup bags, and seeing women trying to achieve a perfect Smokey eye with cotton tips (you may call them q-tips) and a finger! Drives me crazy. What inspires you in your work? So many things inspire my work such as other makeup artists, fashion designers, and at the moment, all types of art. Also, I’ve been glued to pop Asia. There is some crazy makeup going on there and I love it. Who is someone you haven’t worked with yet, but would love to? Beyoncé. That face and oh, the talent! I love working with musicians more than anything else. You get to go to all the concerts and be entertained while being paid for it. You’re doing so much right now, are there any other goals you want to achieve? Yes, I want to see my dream of a small (affordable) boutique makeup range come to light. Also, I want to keep designing tools for our trade. Oh, and of course I need to get cracking on my next makeup book that I recently shot with the incredible photographer, Gavin O’Neill, in New York. All the shots are done and now I have get pen to paper and have it all written and ready to go by the end of the year!

I’m a huge fan of “They’re Real Mascara”, so when Benefit launched a sister product, I was intrigued. “They’re Real Push Up Liner” is a lash hugging gel pen liner. It was designed to make the perfect winged liner easy for anyone to achieve. I’d say, with a little practice, this is definitely true!

DARK MATTE NAILS After prepping the nails and properly hydrating with CND’s Solar Oil, use Essie’s Ridge Filling Base Coat to create a smooth canvas for polish application. It’s especially important to use a ridge filler when going for a matte look as any imperfections to the nail will show through the polish. Follow with two coats of Chanel’s Rouge Noir, let the polish set a few minutes before finishing with Essie’s Matte Top Coat. OBSESSION issue - BELLOmag.com

DARK LIPS We see a bit of 90’s influence in the lip palette this fall. Travel back to the days of a brick colored lip. Think Drew Barrymore or Gwen Stefani… Keep it matte or add a little shine for a more modern feel. Try Nars Semi Matte Lipstick in Shanghai Express. Use a matching lip liner for added definition and staying power. 123

SWEATER BAND OF OUTSIDERS
SLEEK 60’S HAIR To achieve this modern twist on a 60’s look, blow-dry the hair, dab a small amount of Kevin Murphy’s “ Smooth Again” from mid section to the ends. At the roots spritz Kevin Murphy’s “ Anti Gravity Spray for weightless volume, and round-brush the hair with a 80mm blonde bristle brush by Ibiza. The blonde boar bristles smooth the hair while creating a nice volume. Once the hair is smooth create a side part and dry, flat iron the ends with GHD Flat Iron slightly bending the ends out. Don’t forget to do a little back combing at the crown of the head to give it a 60’s twist.
SWEATER SAINT LAURENT
CLEAN SKIN & 60’s INSPIRED LASHES Clean, soft skin is timeless, but add a few lashes and you’re transported into another era. Big, bold eyelashes were seen all over the fall runways. You can achieve this at home by layering several coats of your favorite mascara. Try Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara by Nars. For an even more dramatic look, apply a strip of lashes by Ardell.
SWEATER MCQ ALEXANDER MCQUEEN EARRINGS SARAH MAGID JEWELRY
DEEP SIDE PART This pulled back look with the deep part was achieved by making a clean deep part starting from the arch of the eyebrow. Using an Ibiza Cx4 100% Boar Bristle Brush, brush all the hair back while twisting it at the nape of the head, leaving the ends out to create a modern twist on a “low ponytail”. Make sure to secure the twist with bobby pins and hair pins. Use Kevin Murphy “Session Spray” to get rid if any unwanted fly always and create a sleek look in the front.
SWEATER PRADA EARRINGS SARAH MAGID JEWELRY
MOD NAILS Start with a ridge filling base coat and then apply two coats of Nars’ Galathee. Use Gel’s Striping Tape Nail Art in black to get a perfect stripe of contrast on each nail. Using cuticle scissors, cut the striping just slightly below the start of the nail at the cuticle and just above the free edge so that you’re able to encapsulate the decal with Seche Vite’s Top Coat for extended wear.

TO SAY IT’S BEEN A ROUGH COUPLE OF MONTHS FOR FORMER SHERIFF RICK GRIMES AND HIS POST-APOCALYPTIC NEW FAMILY WOULD BE A MAJOR UNDERSTATEMENT. SADLY, FOR SOME OF OUR FAVORITE CHARACTERS, IT’S FAR FROM OVER. LAST SEASON’S FINALE HAD OUR HEROES FINALLY ARRIVING AT TERMINUS, ONLY TO FIND THAT THIS SO CALLED “HAVEN” IS ANYTHING BUT. JOINING THE SERIES FOR A FULL RUN ON ITS WIDELY ANTICIPATED FIFTH SEASON IS ANDREW J. WEST, AS GARETH, A SEEMINGLY NICE GUY WITH A STREAK OF PURE EVIL.
Exactly what makes him the big bad wolf of season five is unclear, but the common rumors lead all signs to cannibalism. Could Gareth be the leader a la The Governor? Maybe? Maybe not? With a mischievous smile like West’s, it’s any man’s guess. Be it cannibalism or a hoard of walkers invading your space, West has gotten used to what’s considered “business as usual” for any actor on The Walking Dead. “I love getting dirty and running around in the woods with a gun,” he gushes. “Like every other actor since the beginning of time, I really just want to revert back to the 10 year old version of myself.” Another thing that’s business as usual is keeping plot points and storylines on the highest notch of hush-hush. When initially auditioning for the part, West was given material specifically written for the audition in an attempt to keep private any important details and ties that would come from his character. A few days later, West was on a plane to Atlanta and straight to a fitting, all without the mere knowledge of his character’s first name. “I think I had about 24 hours with the real material before we started shooting. I don’t mind those conditions at all, though. It forces you to rely more on your instincts. There isn’t time to over-think anything,” he admits. Arriving on a set full of actors that consider this clockwork could be tough, but West found comfort in knowing things would be different. “It quickly became clear that everyone involved cares a great deal about the show and will take the time needed to get each scene right. As an actor new 129
to a particular set, that approach goes a long way in helping you relax.” During my interview with the Indiana native, he had adapted to the rules of his latest gig quite thoroughly, making sure not to spill spoilers with any answer. He did let on to something though, “This season will certainly advance into unchartered territory in terms of plot and tone.” Saying this about a show that has decapitated a person, and has a kill of the week, every time more intense than the last, is saying a lot. But that’s the kind of show that draws 17.5 million viewers to a finale episode, breaking all types of records on twitter and the Nielsen ratings.
monologue,” explains West. “ While we were shooting, something wasn’t clicking for me and I asked him for some advice on how to approach the next take. He told me to take all focus off of myself - which is difficult to do when it’s only you talking for two pages - and use those two pages of words to really get something from him. Actors often need to be reminded that our job is to do. It was such simple and useful advice. The next take was excellent, thanks to him.” In this digital age, coming off a multiepisode arc on a big network drama and a film with an Oscar nominated co-
Actors often need to be reminded that our job is to do. It was such simple and useful advice. One would think an actor with the skills to snag a role on The Walking Dead must certainly have another trick up his sleeve. If you’re referring to an indie drama co-starring William H. Macy, then you’re right, because that’s what West has up next in his bag of tricks. This time, he’s playing the titular character of Walter, a boy with a peculiar sonof-god complex who works as a tickettaker at the local movie theater. Macy plays Walter’s psychiatrist. “William H. Macy is someone I have looked up to for a very long time, so this experience was something very special for me. I had a particularly long scene with Macy in which I confront him with a two page
star, the next best step would be the millennial act of joining twitter—and that’s exactly what West has done. “As an actor who is certainly not a household name, you sometimes wonder if anyone is really on the receiving end of your work. Twitter gives you immediate feedback from fans and allows you to interact with people you would otherwise never have the opportunity to be in touch with.” He says, “ I love the Walking Dead related art and photos that fans share. It’s always fun when someone shares that kind of stuff.” Give or take a couple weeks, West will be the one immortalized by Dead fans worldwide. Don’t say I didn’t call it first. October 2014 - BELLO

AFTERNOON TEA WITH
Joseph Katz BY JASMINE VO, SENIOR LIFESTYLE EDITOR
It is Sunday morning and I wake up before my alarm goes off. Usually I hit the snooze button several times before I actually get up. It never hurts to have just a few more minutes of beauty sleep. But today in particular I was really excited to get up to meet my friend Joesph Katz for afternoon tea at the Montage in Beverly Hills, CA. For those of you who don’t know Joesph Katz, he is the in house fashion stylist for the Montage Hotel. If you ever need a front of the line pass for the VIP room/ Champagne room at Chanel, Tom Ford,
Louis Vuitton, or any store on Rodeo Drive, Joeseph’s impeccably tailored self is the man who can take you there. Don’t let the private chauffeured Rolls Royce Phantom he uses to drive clients around town fool you into thinking the special treatment comes from pulling up in that because in Beverly Hills everyone has one. What they don’t have is a Joseph Katz.

An up close look at Joseph Katz’s bow tie collection. Photo taken by: Jin Yu escorted to the Parq Bar where Joesph had ordered afternoon tea for us. For those of you who have never been to Parq Bar on a Sunday afternoon let me paint a picture for you. It is adjacent to the alluring Beverly Canon Gardens, features local musical and regional artists (they had a harp player while I was attending), and is decorated how a sitting room at the royal palace would be. And I say this because there must be a reason why the Montage is Prince William and Kate Middleton’s go to place to stay during their visits to Los Angeles. Joseph had our afternoon tea spread located in the corner of Parq where we drank tea out of handpainted china by porcelain artist Lissi Kaplan complimented by a pastry tower of savory and sweet creations by Executive Pastry Chef Julie Jangali. You’ve never had a macaroons until you’ve had a warm one straight out of the oven. The internal weight of each bag is adjustable with individual filler bags, which can be filled with sand or water depending on your preference, or if you’re a frequent traveler. Each bag is equipped with sturdy and comfortable rubber handles, and is made from a non-abrasive, leakproof, mildew resistant military grade shell. Just remember to grab a shovel, because the sand is not included.
Not to be confused with the previously reviewed women’s workout gloves by the same name, G-LOVES by RockTape were designed for, but not limited to, Crossfit enthusiasts everywhere. Seamless palm construction, “falsegrip” silicon ribs, vented finger sidewalls, and a hook grip thumb protection all help to minimize blisters while allowing you to maximize your workout. A para-cord pull strap makes for a snug fit, but perhaps the coolest feature of these gloves, aside from being approved for competition, is that they are touch screen friendly - allowing for use your electronics without the hassle of having to remove your gloves. But hey - you should be working out instead of texting! Gloves run a little on the smaller side, so you may want to round up a size when ordering.

StrongBoard Balance®
Halo V Sweatband The Halo V is a headband designed to fight sweat while providing you with comfort. An adjustable Velcro® strap provides for a custom fit, preventing the band from losing shape or getting stretched out, while the inner Dryline® fabric absorbs sweat, wicks away moisture, and dries quickly. The Halo V is a great workout accessory on its own, or to be used under a helmet, hat, or beanie during the cooler months. OBSESSION issue - BELLOmag.com
StrongBoard pulls from the BOSU Balance Trainer and IndoBoard, among others, in that it offers an unstable platform for performing full-motion exercises. However, what sets it apart from others in this category is that the platform is made unstable by compression springs as opposed to inflation or moving rollers. Through a simple combination of body weight and instability, the body recruits more muscles, especially in the core, to stabilize, thus providing for a more full body workout. StrongBoard Balance® can be used just about anywhere, indoor or outdoor, providing there’s a stable surface, and can be combined with weights, medicine balls, or kettlebells to increase difficulty. Comes in five different spring color options. 136

THE GREAT ROAD TRIP OF 2014:
5 Cities in 10 Days BY HIKO MITSUZUKA
AS A NATIVE NEW YORKER LIVING IN LOS ANGELES FOR THE PAST 12 YEARS, I’VE ALWAYS BELIEVED IN BREAKING FREE FROM MY “BUBBLE” EVERY SO OFTEN TO SEE HOW THE REST OF THE COUNTRY (AND OUR CANADIAN NEIGHBORS) LIVE AND TO WITNESS THE GRAND PURPLE MAJESTY OF REGIONAL LANDMARKS AND WONDERS. LIKE ELIZABETH GILBERT IN EAT PRAY LOVE, I’VE ALWAYS YEARNED TO GO SOME PLACE WHERE I COULD MARVEL AT SOMETHING… BUT IN MY OWN BACKYARD, SO TO SPEAK. If you subscribe to the belief that everyone should travel in order to fully appreciate the ginormous world we live in, then you’re probably open to broadening your horizons. Traveling is a gift – often seen as a privilege – that offers the chance to experience new cultures outside your familiar borders. Domestically speaking, it’s a time to discover
what makes this great nation of ours tick.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
– all juices and syrups are also made on the premises – and features digital art and ambient music that changes throughout the day. And if you feel like curling up with a good book after a few sips of their Blackberry Collins,
(Or, Where to Eat The Best Popcorn Ever) Home to Harpo Studios (Hey, Oprah!), Wrigley Field, the original deep dish pizza, and that massive body of water they call Lake Michigan, Chicago is also the city where some of our favorite pop cultural touchstones took place (Perfect Strangers, any John Hughes movie).
To prepare for our 10-day journey, my friend and I planned our route well in advance by researching every sight to see, every hotspot to check out, and every kind of local cuisine to sample. We wanted the full experience of every major destination we visited. Road atlases
are cool and all, but we knew a trusty built-in GPS would get us to where we needed to be (shout out to Hertz for the the great deal on our comfy Chevy Malibu rental). Armed with a few bags of non-perishable snacks, plenty of water, and a fully charged Flip camera, we set off. Little did we know what we’d be in for…

(Or, Where We Get Our German Groove On) The Midwest is known for its corn-fed denizens and scenes of Americana, and our drive to Columbus was full of fields and barns painted in different shades of red. WHERE TO STAY/EAT/PLAY: German Village Guesthouse (748 Jaeger St.) – This B&B prides itself on being an “innovative alternative” to other downtown Columbus hotels, and we can see why. (Or, The San Francisco of Canada) After driving through another thunderstorm in which we witnessed the darkest of clouds, the sky opened up, and a rainbow guided us into downtown Toronto. MONTREAL, QUEBEC (Or, The Paris of Canada) The second largest city in Canada is also one of the most bilingual in the world. We thought we’d run into a language barrier, but nearly everything we came across was fitted for both the French and English-speaking population. NoMa Social (One Radisson Plaza): The Real Housewives of New Jersey once partied (and brawled) here. Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger celebrated a birthday here. And Perez Hilton and THE END OF THE ROAD Movies and TV may have convinced us that all the interesting and exciting things happen in big cities like Los Angeles and New York, sometimes called “Bubble Cities” (because most of their residents, like myself, are oblivious to what’s going on elsewhere). If you think nowhere else beats where you live, think again. Check that territorial pride at the passenger door and open your eyes to what’s out there. That’s what this road trip taught us to do. It made us realize that home can be anywhere. Each state we drove through, each city we visited, had something to be recognized for, something unique to offer. Many thanks go out to the front desk clerks and hotel managers who always welcomed us with a smile, the gas station attendants who wished us safe travels, the friends who got us tipsy at their local happy hour, and the hospitable tour guides who opened our eyes to whole new worlds.

ROAD TRIP SURVIVAL 101: 8 Tips for a Smooth Drive 1. NEVER go alone. Bring along a good and trustworthy friend, and your bank account will thank you for cutting costs nearly in half. (Have you seen gas prices lately?) You’ll cover more ground and have someone to accompany you while you’re blaring the iPod and lip-syncing to that Ariana Grande song you secretly love. 2. If your hotel accommodations happen to feature less-than-desired grooming products, bring your faves as a backup. FYI: Dove Men Care products (SPF moisturizer, the Extra Fresh body and face wash) come in handy travel sizes. dovemencare.com 3. Recycle! Feel free to fill up on water at every gas station you stop at. Skip the soda at the self-serve soft drink machines and take advantage of the free water that’s available. 4. Bring a roll of toilet paper. Just in case. 5. Don’t forget that multi-device car charger, especially if you find yourself using your smartphone for GPS and playlist purposes. 6. Be sure to stretch the limbs before starting your shift at the wheel. Circulation is key. 7. If you eye an awesome photo op, pull over to a safe spot. Instagramming while driving is just as big of a no-no as texting while driving. 8. Expect unexpected detours.
