Letter from the Editor I am in such great spirits lately, but I wonder why... Is it the holidays? Is it my recent trip to Paris (I did recharge my energy there, after all)? Is it the weather back home, here in Los Angeles? Is it the wonderful people I am working with to make this magazine possible? I believe that it is a mix of all those things, and I cannot say enough how proud I am of all the contributors who make BELLO different, intriguing and inspirational. You guys are amazing. The year is coming to an end, and this is the time we always do our Young Hollywood issue, listing those whom we believe are the future of this city, but never forgetting that there are many we could not fit in this issue (we try to make up for this by featuring these other incredible talents on our daily feed on www.bellomag.com).

While I would never personally stay at the Bates Motel (that I would be too scared is an understatement), it’s no secret that I am completely obsessed with the show and its star, Freddie Highmore, whom we had the pleasure of photographing in London. This young man was a perfect cover for this issue for many reasons, and you should definitely check out his interview to see how cool and interesting he really is.

Over the years, we at BELLO have created something that we call our BELLO family, an amazing group of people and contributors from around the world, all of whom surprise me each issue with their creativity and positive energy. I love spending time with them, creating these beautiful issues every month; they bring out the best work in me, and in themselves. So I send my best wishes to you, our readers, and hope that you spend this holiday season with your friends and family who bring out the best in you. Happy holidays Aleksandar Tomovic (editor in chief)

STARRING VERA FARMIGA AND MAX THIERIOT, AND WITH A BORDERLINE INAPPROPRIATE MOTHER-SON RELATIONSHIP IN A TOWN SO OUT OF ORDER THAT YOU’RE BETTER OFF FENDING FOR YOURSELF, BATES MOTEL IS THE PERFECT COCKTAIL OF DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY SET IN ALL-AROUND EERINESS. ON PAPER IT SOUNDS LIKE IT MIGHT BE A GRIPPING TV DRAMA; PERFORMED BY AN A-LIST CAST, IT CERTAINLY IS, GARNERING A MUCH SOUGHT AFTER THIRD SEASON AND AWARD RECOGNITION. Gaining worldwide acclaim at age 10 in Finding Neverland, Highmore, who turned 22 last Valentine’s Day, doesn’t talk about keeping his life normal or private, he simply does it. The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory child star is fresh out of the University of Cambridge in England, where he graduated with a double degree in Spanish and Arabic. Juggling the filming of his hit horror series alongside academia, Highmore completed the first two years at Cambridge without taking a break for acting. Come his junior year at Britain’s top academic institution, he studied abroad, which allowed him to “squeeze in” Bates Motel without missing much classroom time. “I’ve always been fascinated by language,” he assures me in his quiet English accent. “Travelling a lot as an actor when I was young gave me the opportunity to explore different cultures and languages. Filming in France with an all-French crew is much more rewarding if you speak French.” He is just returned from the prestigious Deauville Film Festival in France, serving as the only non-French jury member. Unlike his infamous American character, Freddie had the stable home life and upbringing Norman Bates was deprived of. “I’ve always lived in London in England, just attending regular schools.” Don’t hold your breath for any candid photos of Freddie falling over outside a late night Hollywood hotspot; this multiple award-winning actor finds other ways of filling what little spare time he has...like creating a new scripted show - his first venture into writing - with his Bates Motel showrunner and friend, Kerry Ehrin. “Working on Bates Motel 11

gave me the ambition of wanting to be part of the whole creative process,” he explains. “Playing Norman, for example, it’s great to be able to bring ideas to the script, but as a writer you get to work on a blank canvas.” His writing debut, a much anticipated comedy, has already gained a script commission from NBC. “Kerry and I happened to be at the Critics’ Choice awards earlier this summer chatting away. I said, “wouldn’t it be interesting to have this thoroughly British character being shown trying to fit in to a very American environment?” Kerry’s such a creative person and once we’d found a world that we wanted to

and-a-half movie, I don’t think it would be possible to depict the transition in the way in which we’ve attempted to in the series. It’s really exciting to see the extra layers of character that Vera Farmiga, Max Thieriot, Nestor [Carbonell], Olivia[Cooke], Nicola [Peltz], and all the actors have built into their performances.” Clearly enthused to discuss his fellow cast members, he adds, “The joy - and perhaps slight frustration - of playing Norman is that we all know where he’s gonna end up, but as an actor I’m not always sure which is the best route to get him to that known destination.”

The joy - and perhaps slight frustration - of playing Norman is that we all know where he’s gonna end up, but as an actor I’m not always sure which is the best route to get him to that known destination. explore, she and I found that working together, the central characters and their lives just flowed.”

Bates Motel is shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Highmore clearly enjoys working on it as much as the increasingly hooked audiences enjoy watching it. He only has positive things to say about playing a future mass murderer. He loves mining the dark side to Norman, but insists that the character he plays is not all bad. “There’s a constant battle between the good and evil of Norman’s personality. It’s my first time doing an American television show, and it’s really given me the opportunity to develop a character without feeling rushed. In an hour-

2015 comes with the anticipation of another roller coaster thrill of a season. The sun never shines for long in White Pine Bay. “I haven’t read all the episodes yet, but I’m sure it’s not going to be all happy days for Norman and Mother. However well-intentioned he starts out, Norman’s going to have to continue down the path that will ultimately destroy all those he loves and end up condemning himself to be the psycho he will be forever remembered as. We know we can’t save him. We know we can’t help him. But I know I must try!” And there you have it, straight from the psycho’s mouth.

The Rise Of

Extreme Bionics: How Hugh Herr and MIT are Transforming Disabilities into Superhuman Game-Changers BY BRENT LAMBERT YEARS AGO THERE WAS A BRIEF PERIOD IN MY LIFE WHEN I FELT BARRAGED BY A PERFECT STORM OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS. A ROUGH PATCH IN UNIVERSITY WAS MADE ALL THE WORSE BY A ROUGH PATCH IN MY LOVE LIFE, FOLLOWED BY THE LOSS OF MY GRANDFATHER. THE IMPACT OF THE BLOWS CONTINUED TO HOLD ME DOWN UNTIL ONE DAY WHEN I HAD A CONVERSATION WITH ONE OF THE WISEST AND MOST INSPIRING MEN I HAVE EVER KNOWN. (Source: WIRED, Hugh Herr with American athlete Amy Mullins)

Sidelined throughout his own life by a string of life-changing events - the loss of his first wife to a rare heart defect, the loss of his second wife to cancer, and having to raise five children as a single father - he managed to navigate these immense challenges and emerge from it all with a profoundly enlightened perspective on life. Now a hugely successful businessman with an amazing new wife and a great big house full of beautiful grandchildren, he is somewhat of a Yoda figure for me. Back when my perfect storm of unfortunate events reached a fever peak, he pulled me aside that day and said to me, “Brent, you have 24 hours to feel sorry for yourself, and that’s it. Anything longer than that, and you are being irresponsible.” Those words resonated in my mind with the force of a jet engine, and they have stayed with me ever since, the take home lesson being the following: the people who get the most out of life are the ones who get right back up each time they’re knocked off their feet. One person who understands the importance of resilience, coupled with a zero-tolerance attitude towards selfpity, is Hugh Herr. Once a renowned mountain climber, Hugh suffered a devastating accident in 1982 at the age of 17, when he and his friend became stranded on Mount Washington for four days in unbearable -110°F windchill and 100mph freezing winds. With only hours left to live, they were discovered by a snow shoer and were quickly

put forth fundamental science and technological capability that will allow for the biomechatronic and regenerative repair of humans across a broad range of brain and body disabilities.” airlifted to a nearby hospital. After weeks of treatment, Hugh had both of his legs amputated due to severe frostbite. Never one to let a couple of lost limbs slow him down, in no time at all Hugh was back on the mountain. What happened next on that rock face would transform the rest of his life, and many other lives around the world as well. With his legs removed, Hugh was seventeen pounds lighter. Even more advantageous was how he was able to customize his prosthetics to adapt to any challenge a rock face could throw at him. Wedge-like feet adaptors gave him a major advantage in being able to climb mountains riddled with fissure cracks. Ice pick feet adaptors allowed him to zip up ice-covered mountains much faster than his friends and competitors, and cliplike feet adaptors had their own set of advantages as well. It was this set of

experiences that led to Hugh’s lifechanging “AHA” moment: he realized he had the power to transform his disability into a major advantage. The young man who was once a poor student had now been filled with a dream and a passion for knowledge. After immersing himself in mathematics and science, Hugh quickly developed a love of physics and set out on what would become an astonishing educational career. Hugh received his Master’s in mechanical engineering from MIT, his Ph.D. in biophysics from Harvard, and then his post-doctorate at MIT. Today, Hugh runs the biomechatronics research group at the MIT Media Lab, where he established the Center for Extreme Bionics. Here, he’s working with his dream team as they continue to revolutionize bionic limbs which are capable of fully emulating natural limbs. Thanks to Hugh’s groundbreaking work, bionic limbs have evolved light years in sophistication from where they were just a few short years ago. TIME magazine recently hailed Hugh as the “Leader of the Bionic Age” thanks to his invention of biomechatronics technology, which marries human physiology with electromechanics. In a fascinating TED Talk, Hugh explains the mission of the Center for Extreme Bionics: “The mission of the Center is to

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Hugh elaborates on the exciting new breakthroughs coming right around the corner, “which will involve [what he calls] extreme interfaces between synthetics and biologics, between materials like titaniums and polymers to skin and bone and muscle and nerve. The idea is to create a direct electric connection with the peripheral nervous system so people can manipulate robotic body parts as if they were natural. Then, potentially, machines can also exchange information with the brain to reflect the same sense of touch, to reflect perception, to reflect heat, pain...all these things that encompass human feeling. Imagine a world where we could actually fix people. They lose a limb, we give them a limb back. It may not be biologics, it may be synthetics. A world in which a person is seeing-impaired...we can fix it. A world in which a person has severe depression...we can fix it. We’re going to have the opportunity in the 21st century to satisfy that human right.” You can watch Dr. Hugh Herr’s extraordinary TED Talk at www. youtube.com/CDsNZJTWw0w, which comes with one of the most inspiring and emotional endings of any lecture you will ever see.

The House of a

Thousand Dreams: Architect Ricardo Bofill Transforms an Abandoned Barcelona Cement Factory Into His Legendary Home and Office

BY BRENT LAMBERT

The greatest tool of any designer is the ability to look out at the built world and ask, “How can I make this better?” That is exactly what legendary Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill has done ever since he designed his very first project, a summer home in Ibiza back in 1957, at the age of 17. Born in 1939, and still going strong at the age of 74, Ricardo Bofill has built an esteemed reputation as one of the most inspiring figures in the world of architecture. He founded his own firm, the Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, when he was 23 years old, and 50 years later he is still leading the team. With over 1,000 projects under his belt, he continues to be an unstoppable force in the design world. But of all Bofill’s works, perhaps none have garnered more praise and reverence than his own office, which also happens to be his home.

22

In 1973 Bofill purchased a decrepit and abandoned cement factory on the western edge of Barcelona. Built in the late 1800s, locals considered the behemoth factory to be an eyesore and were waiting for the day when someone would put the building out of its misery. But Bofill saw something entirely different: he saw a diamond in the rough. Although it was run down, the massive building was filled with some rather unusual and surreal elements: stairs that led to nowhere, massings that cantilevered over empty spaces, bizarre spaces of incomprehensible yet fascinating proportions, and much more. Indeed, when Bofill looked at the abandoned cement factory, he not only saw a diamond in the rough; he saw what would become a beautiful architectural “machine” that would emerge as the centerpiece of his family, his business, and his entire life. The ambitious renovation began almost immediately, and the demolished portions quickly began revealing hidden forms and spaces within. Of the 30 concrete silos, 22 were removed and 8 were transformed into offices, a model-making laboratory, the archives, a massive library, and a giant space nicknamed “The Cathedral” (used for meetings, exhibitions, concerts, professional activities, and the like).

23

effectively an oasis nestled in an industrial infrastructure. Bofill incorporated three architectural languages into the design: Catalan civic gothic style, surrealism, and European post modernism. The end result is so breathtaking, a long list of influential designers consider the residence to be one of the most beautiful and inspiring homes to be found anywhere in the world. In his own words, Bofill explains what he considers to be the most important role of an architect: “To be an architect means to understand space organized by man, to decipher the spontaneous movements and behavior of people, and to detect the needs of change that they might unconsciously express. It is essential to track down these issues if we want to contribute with our personal work to the history of architecture.” To learn more about the home be sure to watch NOWNESS’s beautiful video featurette, which includes brand new footage from inside the residence, as well as an interview with Ricardo Bofill himself. REDHEADED AND SPUNKY ARE TWO WORDS THAT CAN BE USED TO DESCRIBE AWKWARD’S JILLIAN ROSE REED. THE SAME COULD BE SAID ABOUT HER CHARACTER, TAMARA KAPLAN, A FAST-TALKING GOSSIP QUEEN WHO HOLDS LOYALTY ABOVE ALL ELSE. AWKWARD HAS CONTINUED TO BREAK RECORDS FOR THE NETWORK YEARS AFTER ITS PREMIERE IN 2011; AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING, IT IS AT ITS 65TH EPISODE MARK, A FIRST IN MTV’S SCRIPTED HISTORY. AND THEN THERE’S THE STRONG PRESENCE OF ITS STARS ON SOCIAL MEDIA, PARTICULARLY TWITTER...

“There wasn’t much of an expectation, so we started off as this underground show. The first season, we did really well, but it was a cult show that not everyone knew about,” she recalls. “Then, through social media, we blew up once season two came around. We owe it all to the fans that have been dedicated from the beginning and started talking about the show. It’s been a really wild ride. Fast, but fun.” Coincidentally, the teen comedy premiered around the same time platforms like Twitter were beginning to take off, putting them among shows like Scandal and Pretty Little Liars, whose stars have thrived on the social network, expanding their show’s viewership as well as their own fan base. Change would also come for Reed’s character. Always a fan favorite, Tamara has gone through one of the bigger arcs in the series. “It was different. I went from season two Tamara, who had this long hair and was super girly, and was figuring herself out. Then she came back for season three with her hair chopped off and a new boyfriend. She was a little bit more cultured and confident, and that was big for her, and for me. When you’re an actor playing any character, the biggest thing you want is for your character to evolve, because they’re human, and humans evolve. It was super fun to play for me.” Thankfully, Tamara’s “slangtionary” is 27

not only still used, but has expanded over the years. “In the pilot and early episodes, she always had that about her,” she tells me. “But more recently, they’ve given me these giant paragraphs with really crazy words because they realize that I can talk really fast and they think it’s good comedy. They’ve seen what I can do and have added to the character.” Reed gives credit to her friends when talking about her inspiration behind Tamara, citing that “there’s a little bit of me and a lot of my friends in her. I’ve played her for four years now. She’s a part of me.” As bubbly on-screen as she is off , Jillian brings energy and quick teenage wit to the show. Her natural ease with dialogue and impeccable comedic timing have made her one of the funniest female characters amongst the “funny girl” troupe on primetime television. So it’s no surprise that she plans to continue her path on the funny brick rode post-Awkward. “Starting out, I just wanted to take any job I could get,” she admits. “Now that I’ve been in TV for so long, and that I’ve been doing comedy for so long, it’s the only thing that I could really see myself doing. I’d like to get into film and touch on drama. But as far as my career in the long haul, I’d love to be in a long

running series like Friends.” Her current show is nearing its fifth season mark, and should that happen, it would be another first for the network. Whether college is in store for the gang in a hopeful season five is yet to be seen, but Reed already has ideas of what she hopes for Tamara. “I’d like to see Tamara take a trip to New York City, and try and get into some sort of performing arts school. In season one we touched on the fact that she likes to act and sing, but she’s not very good at it. Just imagine Tamara auditioning for NYU’s drama program and what that would do to her.” If I had to guess... where do I begin? For now, fans can look forward to the end of season four, when the whole gang goes on spring break. “There’s a lot of drama, boys, and music.” What more do we need, really? In real life, Jillian Rose Reed is up to much more. At 22, she’s venturing off into producing (Tamara would intern!). “It’s something I had planned on doing, but didn’t necessarily think I’d be doing now,” she reveals. “But a friend of mine who wrote a screenplay approached me, originally wanting me to play one of the characters in her script. As the script developed, and as I got more involved in it, she asked me to come on as a producer. By now we’ve done a couple of table reads where I got to December 2014 - BELLO

bring in actors. It’s all the behind-thescenes stuff that I never get to do.” Next? An indie movie for the festival crowd by the name of Confessions of a Womanizer, where in she stars opposite Gary Busey and Andy Lawrence. In Confessions, Lawrence plays a..well, a womanizer...who decides to settle down. Reed plays Megan, the first of three girlfriends he has throughout the story. Currently, the film is circulating around various film festivals and premiering at others. She’s busy. And it doesn’t stop there. With the help of some of her Awkward cast mates, Reed hosted a “Grandparents Gone Wired” event for Dosomething.org, where they raided a senior living facility and set everyone up on Facebook. That’s right, Facebook. That way, they could keep track of not only their grandkids but those longlost high school friends, too. Perfect... just perfect. Her close-knit cast has also assisted in hosting a clothing drive for the organization. In addition to that, the MTV star and her family have been involved with the American Diabetes Association for several years now. She was inspired to help out those like her older brother who are living with diabetes. “Now that I’m able to give back, I’ve been able to do a lot of things for them. It’s really close to my heart.” With a third cause under her belt, Jillian Rose Reed has nothing on a charity-event-attending socialite. Breaking The Chains, the campaign in which the Michigan native holds the title of spokesperson, deals with a topic once covered on her hit show: eating disorders. “The foundation is about changing the face of eating disorders,” she says. “It’s always been seen as this shameful disease. We’re bringing light to it by using art as our forum, encouraging people who are struggling to come forward.” By the time this is printed, Jillian Rose Reed might have another long line of achievements (as girls like her tend to do), and for that very reason, I will stop right here.

RHYS WARD PLAYS THE “BAD BOY” ROLE SO WELL THAT IT’S QUITE A SURPRISE TO DISCOVER HOW ENGAGING AND GENUINE HE ACTUALLY IS. A PROMISING YOUNG HOLLYWOOD UP-AND-COMER, HE STARTED ACTING AS A CHILD IN A CAMP PRODUCTION OF PETER PAN (“I HAD ONE LINE AND I SCREWED IT UP”), BEFORE EVENTUALLY ENROLLING IN BUSINESS SCHOOL IN TORONTO AS A WAY TO GET TO THE BIG CITY, WHERE A LOT OF PRODUCTIONS FILM.

During his second or third year, he booked his first movie, Hallmark’s The Good Witch’s Family, subsequently dropped out of business school, and his life as a working actor has been nonstop ever since. Recently, he wrapped The Returned, a remake of the French TV show of the same name, and of course I couldn’t wait to ask him all about it... Tell me a little about your character in The Returned. His name is Adam Darrow, and he’s an expert hunter with a very dark family past. I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say because it might spoil a few secrets. We filmed it in Vancouver. It’s really beautiful where we shot it, and it’s a very similar setting to the French version: basically a small town where very strange things start to happen. People that have been dead for five, ten, some thirty years, just suddenly come back to life, and their loved ones have to deal with what is like the opposite of grief and adjusting to their return. You film a lot in Canada, your home country. Do you prefer living in Canada or LA, which is where you now call home? I think I’ve really come to terms with really liking LA more. I was a little hesitant at first when I officially got here in January. I got my own apartment and stuff and I wasn’t loving it that much because it can be really lonely in the city. But since I got back from The Returned, everyone from the show has been awesome. The majority of them live here mostly, so I have them, and I’ve made a bunch of friends. I really like it now since we have been back. I just feel a lot more comfortable here. 33

What do you like to do when you’re not working? I’m a huge movie buff! I saw two just yesterday: Nightcrawler and Before I Go to Sleep. Speaking of films, you have an impressive set of TV credits: Heartland, The LA Complex, and Nikita, to name a few. Would you prefer to do more films or TV? Well TV is cool, [because] you can expand your character. You can work with the same cast and crew five to seven months at a time, and with film, depending on what the film is like, it’s usually no more than three months’ work. I would love to do more film, although I’m really enjoying TV right now. It’s been great practice. You learn a lot being on the set of TV shows, and you just get to spend so much more time on your character, developing it, arcing it and [working on] your relationships to the other characters on the show and how they would react to different situations. I love TV, but would like to do more film. Absolutely! Is there anyone you haven’t worked with but would like to work with in the future? Tilda Swinton, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Terrence Malick. I love his films. What has been your favorite part thus far?

The Returned is number one for sure, and my second favorite was a small part - and that was probably my first cool movie - called And Now a Word from Our Sponsor. It was with one of my favorite actresses, Parker Posey,

and Bruce Greenwood, a well-known Canadian actor. I basically get to play this douchebag boyfriend, and that was fun! He’s this little shithead, and I rape his daughter. Whoa! You seem to always get the bad boy roles! I feel like that is usually my thing. I usually play drug addicts, killers, or douchebag boyfriends. That’s probably my top three hits. I don’t play the “boy next door” very well. I don’t know why. I try, I really do, but it just doesn’t work. What kind of part would you like to play that you haven’t yet? I would love to play a more normal person, but I find the darker roles more interesting than the leading man characters. The twisted characters are more fun. Where do you see yourself in five years? That’s a hard one! Well, hopefully by then I’ll be working with Tilda Swinton and Benedict Cumberbatch. And maybe playing an elf on Lord of the Rings. I just really wanna play an elf. Ok, random facts: What’s your favorite color, and what’s one thing about yourself that people wouldn’t know off hand about you? One random fact about me is I like to blast Marilyn Manson while I drive. Oh, and my favorite color is black. Hmmm...Maryilyn Manson and black as a favorite color? Sounds like Rhys Ward definitely has more of a dark side to him. Catch more of it on The Returned, coming soon on the A&E network. December 2014 - BELLO

IF YOU’VE TURNED ON A TV SET AT ALL WITHIN THE PAST YEAR, YOU’VE DEFINITELY CAUGHT A GLIMPSE OF KEENAN TRACEY. AND IF YOU HAVEN’T, THEN YOU’RE IN LUCK, BECAUSE HE’S JUST GETTING STARTED. LAST SEASON ON A&E’S BATES MOTEL, HE SHOOK UP EMMA AND NORMAN’S DYNAMIC AND COME SEASON THREE, I’M HOPING HE DOES IT ALL OVER AGAIN. THE 23-YEAROLD ACTOR IS GEARING UP FOR AN EVEN BUSIER YEAR. FOR STARTERS, HE TAKES UP A NEW ROLE ON THE MUCH ANTICIPATED SERIES THE RETURNED, WHERE HE PLAYS BEN LOWRY, A BOY CAUGHT IN BETWEEN A LOVE TRIANGLE INVOLVING TWO TWIN SISTERS (YIKES!).

Both relationships, he assures me, include some very haunting moments throughout the season, and that isn’t all. “Working on the series was a great chance for me to sharpen a few skills,” he confesses. “It’s a great feeling looking across the camera to a set of eyes you know are going to do something genuine and real, and make you really feel like the scene is actually happening to you,” he explains so eloquently of his craft. “They say to surround yourself with people who know more or very different things than you if you want to learn and get better at something, and I feel like this show was that opportunity.” Meanwhile, at the homey motel in White Pine Bay, things aren’t so positive. Tracey carefully chooses his words before answering my next question about the bloody popular prequel. What can we expect? Will there be more death? “Things are taking somewhat of a different route with the character this season pretty much right 37

off the bat,” he admits. “Without saying too much, [Gunnar’s] endeavoring prior discussed aspirations with a familiar set of faces. I hope that was cryptic enough to not get me fired.” Get you fired? No. Get fans excited for the forthcoming season? Yes.

quite an exhilarating feeling. It gives me goose bumps to think of during the off-season, when you want to but can’t. It’s definitely made me more solitary though and showed me that I’m happy alone, so I spend a lot more time on my own since.”

Knowing what’s appropriate in press, set, or any aspect of the entertainment industry is not something he’s especially unfamiliar with. Tracey’s dad, Ian Tracey, has been acting since the 70s, and his working actor status may have played a part in Tracey’s understanding and appreciation of the art form. He says that when he was a kid, he’d always go to set with his father, particularly during the period in which his father was filming the series DaVinci’s Inquest. “The show shot over the summer into fall, so I wouldn’t be in school and would get to come, hang out and watch what was going on,” he recalls. “It was sort of an awesome thing that will probably not happen again, being on set without the distraction of the job you’re there to do, because there was none. Having no stakes on the table, lines to memorize or blocking to think about, it was easy to find somewhere quiet and out of the way to just watch.”

That’s if you count spending time with your dog being “alone.” “It gets hard not seeing my dog’s face when I’m out of town,” he tells me. “He sleeps at the foot of my bed, but takes up more space than I know how to...so his face or tail is usually what I wake up to. Dogs are a nice way to start the day.” Besides not being able to live without his dog, his guitar is a close second. That’s right, he loves dogs, rides a bike and plays the guitar. Tracey was given his first guitar thirteen years ago, so long ago that it’s crazy for him to think of. In the years since, the guitar has become his favorite instrument, and certainly the easiest for him to begin a song with. Tracey admits that as a teenager he gave songwriting a try, but it wasn’t until meeting a group of guys in a band looking for a singer that he was really able to put things into motion, and find his own stride. Ultimately writing for the five-piece band, Tracey found a rhythm and style for the music he wanted to write.

The similarities within his family don’t stop there; Tracey is the owner of a Triumph Thruxton bike, a pastime he also shares with his father. “I think it was something that brought my pop and I closer. Riding is my knitting,” he says. “I started riding when no one could legally tell me I couldn’t. I love my mom and she hates it of course, but I think I took the test the day after my 18th birthday. It’s something I think deep down she always saw coming, considering the common interest amongst the guys in my family.” Tracey has now been riding for a little over five years, and both his bike and his famous dad make regular appearances on the actor’s instagram account. “When you get out of the city and onto a road that you know you don’t have to stop on until you want to, it’s

“I set up a little studio at my place about a year ago, which really pushed me to make it worth it, so when I couldn’t sleep (which is mostly the case) I’d put the space to use and work on sounds.” Hours of work resulted in his current work-in-progress, Still Eye. “I guess it would be most simply categorized as indie rock. But I wanted to give it a classical element and formula with a 50’s sound, done with modern hardware and instruments. Playing music you love and believe in on stage is one of the most gratifying feelings I’ve felt and I can’t wait to get to do it again.” On paper, Keenan Tracey reads like the creation of two teenage girls... Kelly Lebrock’s Weird Science-male equal. That’s because he is. December 2014 - BELLO

KEENAN’S 2014. Favorite book read: The Picture Of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Favorite album heard: First Impressions of Earth by The Strokes, very closely followed by Beach House’s latest record Myth, because it sounds like the rain. Trend: “If trends looked the way they did 50 years ago, perhaps... but unfortunately I guess that would technically mean it’s not a trend. Trying to keep up with trends is like trying to find the edge of a circle: you’ll keep chasing it, only to realize that there isn’t an end and the thing that is cool next year is the one people called “weird” last year. Fashion has a strange ebb and flow, I find. I try not to get caught up in it because you’ll just end up buying new clothes every season, because you all of a sudden hate your wardrobe. That being said, I think how you dress is an important and good way to represent yourself without having to say or do anything. So, why not use that. Wear what YOU think looks good or fits you well; who knows, it could actually be “in” next season anyhow.”

Joey King Makes It Look So Easy WORDS BY BRAD LIBERTI How many 15-year-olds do you know who can wax effortlessly on topics as varied as Stonewall and the Oscar Winning 1996 film, Fargo? Who count James Franco as one of their most trusted friends and colleagues? And who proudly own a pet pig? If your answer was a resounding none, then it’s about time you met actress Joey King. An instantly appealing scene-stealer with a megawatt smile, Ms. King has seen her career rise steadily since first breaking out opposite Selena Gomez in 2010’s Ramona and Beezus. In fact, she’s wrapping up what has easily been the busiest and most productive year of her young life, but before we get to any of that, it’s time for some Franco dirt. “Our first job together was Oz: The Great and Powerful,” she says, referring to the blockbuster 2013 film from Sam Raimi in which the actor played the titular character and King lent her voice to his adorable sidekick, China Girl. “Then after that, he asked me to be in his film The Sound and the Fury, and then I did a little thing with him and [the musical group] Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes. And now I’m doing [his latest film] Zeroville.” Clearly the Oscar-Nominee is a fan, and the feeling is undeniably mutual. “I love working with him. Honestly, he’s such a great director; he’s such a great actor, and he’s also just a really nice person.” But the two performers have more in common than simply a shared respect for one another’s work. Like Franco, Joey King isn’t afraid of a new challenge, whether it’s tackling complex roles onscreen or lending her voice to some truly buzzy projects. “I think the first voice job I did was [2008’s] Horton Hears a Who! After that I was hooked, because I love the challenge of conveying an emotion just through your voice and seeing how [the character] comes to life on screen.” 41

PHOTO AND STYLING BY THEO & JULIET

Of course the aforementioned Oz has been her highest profile gig of this sort, introducing the talented young star not only to Mr. Franco, but also another future collaborator, Wish I Was Here director, Zach Braff. “On [Oz,] Zack (who voiced winged monkey, Finley) and I were on set the entire six months because they had to film our faces, but we kind of got stuck away from everyone else in this little booth sometimes.” That wasn’t the case, however, on the set of King’s upcoming film, Roland Emmerick’s highly anticipated look at the famous gay riots in New York City in 1969, Stonewall. The actress explains, “It was such an incredible experience and I learned so much on that set. I had such an immense time making it, working with Roland and the entire cast.” And while the events of the movie may seem shocking to someone who’s grown up in the post-Ellen era, King is too smart to simply assume that everything is all better now. “America and the whole world is still a work in progress when it comes to that, and hopefully one day everyone will no longer have a problem with people being gay.” Insight like that is quite common from this bright talent, but that doesn’t mean she’s forgotten how to be a teenage girl. Quite the contrary is true, especially photography and styling THEO & JULIET www.theoandjuliet.com

when talk turns to social media. “Honestly,” she begins, enthusiasm mounting, “sometimes it’s really fun to engage in the Twitter trends. Like #AlexFromTarget (the handsome sales clerk whose fame skyrocketed when an admirer posted his pic on the social site). That’s one of my favorite parts about Twitter: you just never know what’s going to happen, and it’s really fun to look at what’s going on and then engage with it.” Naturally, she also loves spending time on Instagram and hanging with friends when not working, but King reserves a special place in her heart for JJ, the pet pig she received as a birthday gift from former Tonight Show host, Jay Leno, in 2011. “I’d always wanted a pet pig and my birthday was coming up. And so I went on the show like three days before my birthday and when he brought JJ out I was so surprised! It was the best birthday present ever.” Also a great gift, however, are the praise and accolades heaped upon King and her costars in FX’s deliciously wicked runaway hit, Fargo. And if you think she was new to the Coen Brothers’ classic when she signed up to play the daughter of easy-going deputy Gus Grimly (Colin Hanks), think again. “I’ve been such a fan of that movie for so long. It’s so funny in such a horrifying way and I think that’s what makes it unique and so special. That was such a great show to be a part of. I’m super pleased with the outcome; the reviews were great and we won a freaking Emmy!” The show is pulling a True Detective and starting with a fresh cast in Season 2, but you can be sure Joey King will be watching, if she has time. After all, this girl’s on a mission.”It doesn’t matter when it happens - it could be 20 years from now - but my goal is to win an Academy Award. I just have to keep working hard and doing my best and hopefully it will pay off.”

Dark Knight In Training WORDS BY HIKO MITSUZUKAÂ PHOTOS BY AMANDA ELKINS

DAVID MAZOUZ MAY BE THE LATEST INCARNATION OF BRUCE WAYNE ON FOX’S ORIGIN SERIES GOTHAM, BUT DON’T EXPECT THE 13-YEAR-OLD ACTOR TO HOP IN THE BATMOBILE ANYTIME SOON (HE’S GOT A FEW MORE YEARS BEFORE ACQUIRING THAT DRIVER’S LICENSE). AND DON’T EXPECT HIS CHARACTER TO DON THAT ICONIC BLACK CAPE AND MASK JUST YET. ANY FANBOY WILL TELL YOU THAT ALL GOOD MYTHOLOGIES TAKE TIME TO UNRAVEL AND DEVELOP, AND MAZOUZ IS MAKING SURE TO SOAK UP AS MUCH AS HE CAN WHILE ADJUSTING TO HIS ROLE AS A KEY PLAYER IN THE DC UNIVERSE...EVEN IF IT INCLUDES AN OCCASIONAL HAPPY DANCE. What went through your mind when you found out you nabbed the role that would essentially allow you to say, “I am Batman”? Describe that day. It’s tough to answer that question because the audition process was an intensive one. Shortly after the New Year, I had a 103-degree fever and went in for my first test. The next day I was asked to come back and test again, and funny enough, I was asked to come back again, which was my third time in a week. On that day, a hair stylist cut my hair much shorter than it had ever been - cut all the curls off - and I was dressed in a very “Bruce Wayne” type of jacket, and I tested again on tape. I waited for what felt like a couple of weeks. I finally was told I got the role. After all that build up, I was in shock and so happy, yet it felt unbelievable. I was very excited and even screamed! But it really wasn’t until we shot the pilot three months later that it started to seem real. When we were in the hotel one night in New York while shooting the pilot, it sunk in. I danced on the bed and screamed while I did a happy dance. Finding out about this was one of the best days of my life! Some of the material on Gotham is quite dark. What do you do to shake it off when you wrap up an intense scene? The show is quite dark, but I don’t really feel like I go into a dark place for very long when we’re shooting. There is a lot of camaraderie among the cast, so in between takes, we try to have a good time and lighten things up. I have had most of my scenes with Sean Pertwee, and he’s particularly good at having a laugh with me. All the actors on set are really a lot of fun, and we have all done 43

quite a lot of socializing, especially since many of us have moved to New York to shoot. We know how to have a good time together. It’s hard to be dark around these amazing people! What’s one thing that has surprised you about being on a huge mythologydriven show like this? I think it’s the commitment and support from the fans. I saw all the Batman movies, and Batman was always my favorite superhero, but I never really read the comics. However, when I booked this role, I did all kinds of research and read every comic book I could get my hands on. I received Batman books and read about all the villains and many characters I didn’t know about before. So now I understand how complex these stories are and how committed the fans are and how supportive they have been. What surprised me is how excited the fans were at [San Diego] Comic Con, and it just makes me want to work that much harder to be the person they see as the prequel to Batman. Speaking of Comic Con...got any crazy stories from this past summer? I don’t! We were all really busy going from one place to another, and at the end of a long and amazingly fun day of press, autograph signings, and the awesome Gotham Zip Line, we had a DC panel where I got to meet the rest of the Justice League, including cast from The Flash, Arrow and Constantine. It was really awesome and also kind of unreal. People were completely decked out as all these different comic characters and even dressed their babies! It was crazy! I LOVED it! Just wished I had time to go shopping, too!

Ever think you’ll swap some Batman stories with Ben Affleck (who will be starring in 2016’s Dawn of Justice)? I don’t know if I will have anything to share with Ben Affleck, but I would LOVE to hear stories from him! I would love to watch him shoot and see him go in and out of scenes and character. I am sure Ben Affleck and Christian Bale would have a lot of stories to share, and I could learn so much from them, especially how to say “I am Batman” correctly. I have years before I would need to work on that! How (and when) did you know you wanted to become an actor? I didn’t really have a moment when I knew I wanted to be an actor. My sister and I were stopped in a mall about taking acting classes. My mom said no at first, but my sister really wanted to, and I was only six [years old] and followed her everywhere. My mom found us a teacher who is still my coach today. We just took classes together every week for three hours. About a year later, my commercial agent wanted to represent me, and then he referred me to my theatrical agent, and I began to work theatrically. I always loved it! I loved working from the very beginning, and I still do. I can’t imagine doing anything else. Now I’d love to write and direct one day. Got any favorite holiday traditions you’re excited for? We have a lot of holiday traditions in my family and usually have a lot of friends over. This year, because I’m working away from home, I’m not really sure what we’ll be doing, if we’ll be home in L.A. or if my sister and dad will be able to join us in New York. If we are there, that’d be a new tradition! December 2014 - BELLO

Jaeden Lieberher

BOY WONDER WORDS BY BRAD LIBERTI PHOTOS BY VANESSA VIOLA www.vanessaviolaphotography.com IN HOLLYWOOD, THEY SAY YOU HAVEN’T TRULY MADE IT UNTIL THE RUMORS START FLYING. OF COURSE, USUALLY THE STORIES INVOLVE SOME SORT OF ACTOR INDISCRETION OR NASTY BEHAVIOR PLAYED OUT AMONG TABLOIDS AND ENTERTAINMENT SITES, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO 11-YEAR-OLD JAEDEN LIEBERHER, THE GOSSIP IS SO MUCH MORE DELICIOUSLY HIGHBROW. THAT’S RIGHT, RUMOR HAS IT THAT THE TALENTED YOUNGSTER IS CURRENTLY ACTING AS DE FACTO AGENT TO THE LEGENDARY AND ELUSIVE BILL MURRAY, HIS COSTAR IN THIS FALL’S ST. VINCENT. EVEN MORE SHOCKING, HOWEVER, IS THAT THIS ISN’T ENTIRELY UNTRUE. “I don’t think he likes to have an agent,”Jaeden says of his notoriously idiosyncratic friend. “But on the last day of [shooting] St. Vincent, Bill came up to me and asked me if he should do the Hawaii Cameron Crowe Project, which I had just found out that I was gonna be in. He said, “Do you have Cameron’s number? Can you touch base?” And I texted Cameron Crowe and told him Bill was gonna be in his new movie.” Yeah, you heard that right: this instantly likable, precocious 11-year-old, who’s only been acting for a few years, is now brokering deals between some of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters, not to mention hopping from one A-list project to the next. At the moment, however, he’s getting ready for a little league game. “I love to play baseball, ” he tells me, his enthusiasm and sincerity a charming YOUNG HOLLYWOOD issue - BELLOmag.com

reminder of his real age. Lieberher a proud Philadelphia native, despite now residing in LA - is of course a diehard Phillies fan. His favorite movie is Goonies, and he loves acting because “you get to do things that you couldn’t do in real life, like have superpowers...” ...or hobnob with Academy -Award Winning titans like Crowe (for whom the young actor will star alongside Murray and Emma Stone in his latest as-yetuntitled film) and jet-set between glamorous destinations like New York, Hawaii, and New Orleans (where he just wrapped Take Shelter director Jeff Nichols’ latest film, Midnight Special,

opposite Michael Shannon, Driver and Kirsten Dunst).

Adam

But back to that infamous first meeting with his future partner in crime. “I didn’t meet Bill until day one of shooting St. Vincent, and I was very intimidated, so I went up to him and I said, “Hello.” But I’m not sure if he heard me or if he was just ignoring me, because I don’t think he was very excited to meet me. But I finally started talking to him, and he turned out to be really nice.” Like Oliver, his unforgettable character in the film, Jaeden can’t help but win over just about every adult he meets, but the similarities between the two don’t end there. “We’re both shy, except he’s less nervous around adults. [Oliver] couldn’t really stand up for himself with bullies, but he can with adults, and I think that helped me get into character.” I ask him what else he did to prepare for such a demanding role, and without missing a beat he responds, “I always thought about being Oliver and also being myself at the same time.” It’s simple yet sage advice from a young man clearly wise beyond his years, and soon it’s not hard to believe that Murray would choose him as his latest go-to guy. Not only is this kid the real deal, but Jaeden Leiberher is most definitely here to stay. In fact, he’s even got a tenyear Hollywood plan. “I would like to direct. It seems like there’s something about it…when you’re a director or a writer like Ted (Melfi, the man behind St. Vincent), the movie really comes from you. You’re its heart.” How can you argue with that? 46

BESTOF 2014 2014 WAS THE YEAR OF...SO MANY THINGS, AND WE ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE OF IT (WELL, MOST OF IT). RESIDENT POP CULTURE JUNKIES HIKO MITSUZUKA, BRAD LIBERTI, AND DIO ANTHONY TACKLE THE YEAR’S BEST AND BRIGHTEST IN MOVIES, TELEVISION, AND MUSIC (*BASED ON WHATEVER’S BEEN SCREENED OR SAMPLED AT PRESS TIME).

FILM PICKS OF 2014

1. Frank - As weird as it is wickedly funny, this gem about an Arcade Firestyle band led by the one and only Frank (Michael Fassbender) is an unexpected delight. 2. Pride - Rousing. Inspiring. Unforgettable. Writer Stephen Beresford brilliantly chronicles the unlikely partnership of an LGBT activist group and the British miners who went on strike in the early 80s. Director Matthew Warchus manages to balance numerous characters and storylines, thanks to a powerhouse ensemble that includes Imelda Staunton, Bill Nighy, Paddy Considine, and Dominic West. 3. Boyhood - What seemed like a filmmaking gimmick (shoot the same actors over a 12-year period) turned out to be an intimately epic chronicle of an American family that is as loving, flawed, and complicated as any brood out there in the country. Richard Linklater’s personal and groundbreaking opus is destined to become a classic. 4. Edge of Tomorrow - Tom Cruise may no longer be the box office star that he once was, but this satisfying and high-octane crowd-pleaser shows that YOUNG HOLLYWOOD issue - BELLOmag.com

he’s still king of the action game. And that director Doug Liman can deliver a blockbuster with brains.

touching, and a straight-up emotional rollercoaster, Stars is the tear-fest you’ll want to cry to over and over again.

5. Obvious Child - Jenny Slate shines in this irreverent comedy from first time writer-director Gillian Robespierre.

10. Guardians of the Galaxy - Marvel’s surprise success with this quirky comic book adaptation gave audiences a helluva good soundtrack and a couple of memorable performances by the mega-sexy Chris Pratt and the lovely Zoe Saldana. Because even in green, one can’t get enough of this lady...not to mention the ultra-awesome special effects, too.

6. Nightcrawler - Jake Gyllenhaal’s Louis Bloom may not exactly be the guy you’d want to bring home to mom, but not since Travis Bickle uttered the famous phrase “You talking to me?” has an on-screen anti-hero burned with such sociopathic magnetism.

TV PICKS OF 2014

7. Gone Girl - Not only is Gillian Flynn’s adaptation of her own novel a devious exercise in spot-on casting, it’s a sly and sinister Fincherian satire tailor-made for our 21st century culture of hypocrisy, sexism, and tabloidinfluenced tastes. 8. Neighbors - A Seth Rogen collaboration was exactly what Zac Efron needed in this laugh-out-loud comedy about fitting in and knowing when to quit. 9. The Fault in Our Stars - Josh Boone’s film, based on the John Green novel, is more than just A Walk To Remember of the millenial age. Sweet,

1. Transparent (Amazon) - Creator Jill Soloway’s delicate portait of a family in crisis (identity and otherwise) has brilliant shades of Six Feet Under (Soloway’s old stomping grounds of seriocomic family dysfunction). The beautifully nuanced accuracy is something to behold. Jeffrey Tambor’s performance is one that TV has never seen before. 2. Getting On (HBO) - Not only is this dark comedy set in the geriatric care wing of a medical center, one of the most underrated on television, but in Dr. Jenna James, Laurie Metcalf has finally found a TV role worthy of her unending awesomeness. 48

Ryan Murphy’s devastatingly beautiful Heart is also one of the best movies of the year. Period.

3. You’re The Worst (FX) - Finally, a show not about the glitz and glam of a Los Angeles relatioship. FX hits all the right notes with their unconventional comedy about an unconventional relationship. Jimmy and Gretchen are TV’s most f*cked up twosome, in the best way possible. To put it lightly, they’re the worst. 4. Looking (HBO) - Patrick, Agustin, and Dom will have you fall in love with them. It’s that simple. San Francisco has never looked so good on screen, and Season 2 arrives next month with a bigger episode order. Who’s counting? You’ll be, once you get a taste. 5. Key & Peele (Comedy Central) The boldest and most brilliant sketch comedy to explode on TV in...yeah, we’ll say it...decades. 6. The Affair (Showtime) - In this riveting tale of two married people engaging in an affair, creators Hagai Levi and Sarah Treem create a style and format that’ll have you yelling at your TV, “Where has this been all my life!” If not for the beautiful world they’ve designed, then for the scenes you can’t bear to watch, yet can’t take your eyes away from. 7. Black-ish (ABC) This breakout comedy brings Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson back into our living rooms with this very smart comedy about an African-American man holding onto his roots for as long as he can. Black-ish is funny and endearing... and I want “six seasons and a movie.” 8. Gotham (Fox) Ben McKenzie returns to TV, showing us that he’s never fully out of style in this dark, exhilarating show that embraces no boundaries in storytelling. You will watch with one eye closed... but make sure to keep the other opened; you’ll need it to catch the slew of exciting guest stars. 9. The Normal Heart (HBO) Tackling an issue as emotionally resonant today as it was back in the early 80s, combined with a dynamite cast led by the incredible Mark Ruffalo, 49

10. How to Get Away with Murder (ABC) - It’s Shonda Rhimes’s world...and we’re all happy to live in it. Especially when it comes packed with steamy sex, delicious plot twists, and the kind of leading lady (Viola Davis) and supporting cast network television needs.

BEST TV REBOOTS NO ONE TALKED ABOUT: Revenge (ABC) - If you missed the last couple of episodes of the back-tobasics third season, then you missed out on one hell of a wallop: backstabbings, revelations, closure, murder, and one jaw-dropping resurrection (which we actually called back in season 1!).

Game Of Thrones (HBO) - So what if everybody and their mother won’t shut up about HBO’s epic fantasy behemoth? If you watched even one episode of the show’s riveting fourth season, you completely understand why.

MUSIC PICKS OF 2014

1. Glorious by Foxes - The vocals behind Zedd’s EDM hit “Clarity” belong to this chanteuse, who delivered a debut album as underrated as it is breathtaking. Intimate, stirring, emotional, and epic are just some of the words that apply to this collection of alt-pop perfection. DOWNLOAD NOW: “Holding Onto Heaven” and “Let Go For Tonight.” 2. Queen of the Clouds by Tove Lo Move past the ubiquitous Top 40 single that is “Habits” and discover the rest of this Swede’s bold and captivating track list. DOWNLOAD NOW: “Talking Body,” “Moments,” and “Got Love.” 3. Take Me When You Go by Betty Who - Breathing new life into pop is this Aussie who wooed us back in 2013 with her debut EP, and now she’s proven to the

world that she can keep the earworms coming with this sparkling debut that sounds like what Katy Perry wishes she could be. DOWNLOAD NOW: “High Society,” “All of You,” and “Glory Days.” 4. “Rather Be” by Clean Bandit, feat. Jess Glynne - The opening notes of this British group’s Top 10 single should be enough to lure you into their web of electronic bells and whistles, but it’s Glynne’s mesmerizing vocals that ground the song and keep you hooked.

“Sleeping With A Friend” by Neon Trees - This anthemic, 5.

80s-tinged ode to friends with benefits was a much-needed jolt to kick off the year, and it’s still on heavy rotatation on our iPods. 6. 1989 - Taylor Swift - Swifty trades in her country roots for world domination. 7. “No Mediocre” by T.I., feat. Iggy Azalea - There were few jams in 2014 that could match the chilled-out bliss and cocksure swagger of this guilty pleasure from Atlanta’s favorite son and his curvaceous protegé. 8. “Why Try” by Ariana Grande - Grande’s whipped cream-frosted vocals might not pack the meaty wallup that some crave, but they sure do make the pain sound sweet. 9. “Take Me To Church” by Hozier - So what if you still haven’t figured out how to pronounce his name; 24-year-old Andrew Hozier-Byrne of Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland had one of the most assured breakout hits in years with this soulful slow-burn of a rock anthem. 10. “Classic” by The Knocks, feat. Powers - This is how summer should sound like. The electronic duo from NYC deliver a deliciously breezy track that should live on as a seasonal anthem year after year.

HONORABLE MENTION: Sound of a Woman by Kiesza - The Canadian singer-songwriter delivered some 90s throwback realness on her album, a collection of retro-house anthems and unexpected ballads, like the brilliant reimagining of Haddaway’s “What is Love.”

IT ISN’T EASY BEING AN ACTOR FROM THE POST-TWEEN GENERATION. WHEN TRANSITIONING FROM A DISNEY-TYPE PROGRAM INTO SOMETHING MORE ADULT, THEY CAN’T ALIENATE THEIR OLD FANS WHILE ACQUIRING NEW ONES. IT’S A DELICATE BALANCE, AND PEOPLE CAN BE FICKLE. WHILE SEARCHING FOR MEATIER PARTS TO BITE INTO (NO BROODING VAMPIRES REQUIRED), THEY DON’T WANT TO BE PIGEONHOLED IN ANY ONE KIND OF KID-FRIENDLY GENRE. “I’m all for it!” says actor Ryan Rottman about entertainers maturing in front of the camera. “I think that as [the younger generation] grow into adults and discover who they are, the roles they play naturally become increasingly mature and diverse. Everyone grows up.” As one of the stars of MTV’s new dramedy, Happyland, Rottman had his first big moment opposite Anna Faris (and the then-unknown Emma Stone) in the comedy, The House Bunny. But it didn’t happen overnight; he studied at the New York Film Academy and interned for Writer/Director/Producer Todd Phillips of The Hangover fame.

Only upon meeting his manager through Phillips did his star begin to rise on shows like the CW’s 90210, ABC’s The Lying Game and TeenNick’s Gigantic. With Happyland, Rottman gets to flex his acting muscles on a show that is best described as “sex, drugs and roller coasters,” as the main action happens at an amusement park. Thankfully, there are no mouse ears to be found on the screen. “The show provides a twist of comedy while delving into real-life issues like struggling to make ends meet, sorting through non-traditional family relationships and, of course, dealing with dating drama, all the while having to put on a “happy” face when sometimes that’s the last thing you want to do,” explains Rottman. After working on TV sets for his last few projects, Rottman would like to do more film. “I’d really like to do a deep-seeded drama that taps into the unknown, and of course an action movie. Who doesn’t like getting to shoot a gun and fight a little?” This is coming from an actor who is inspired by actors from the imitable Jimmy Stewart to the intense Christian Bale, as well as director Guy Ritchie (from the revved-up Sherlock Holmes franchise) and writer Terrence Winter (of TV’s sleuth-fest, Castle). But it’s not all fun and games, amusement park or not. Waiting for the set to be ready is one of the most tedious aspects of filming. “I heard a saying once: “I act for free, but I get paid to wait.” [That sentiment] is not far from the truth! Also, having to be away from your significant other, family and friends for long periods of time strains those relationships, particularly with significant others.” According to Rottman, maybe Hollywood can be a happy land, after all. “I’m so fortunate that I get to do what I love and get paid for it. I get to work and meet really unique and incredible people, and also get to bring things to life that people only dream about.”

How do you come up with these ideas? “Making people laugh is one of the main things that inspires me. You’d be surprised how many people tell me how my six-second video brightened up their whole day. Coming up with these ideas can be really random, but I just try to take basic things in life and make then funny by adding a little twist.” Any particular favorites? “One of my favorite vines is when I was shooting a bubble gun over a guy. BRAD’S BUZZ

BY BRAD LIBERTI, ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR twitter and instagram @bjl233

1. Inherent Vice So what if the Master didn’t make nearly as much sense as it thought it did? The movie was still a mesmerizing character study done as only Mr. PT Andersen can do… And while this one, based on a Thomas Pynchon novel, promises to be just as non-linear, Joaquin Phoenix is back, and is joined by an incredible cast that includes Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon, and Martin Short (yes, Martin Short). So whether we get it or not, I can already hear Oscar calling.

2. Big Eyes Amy Adams continues her streak of nabbing just about every coveted part in every A-list project out there with her starring role in Tim Burton’s biopic of painter Margaret Keane. Anyone who’s seen Ed Wood knows just what the director can do with a biopic; add to that the fact that the incredible Christophe Waltz plays Keane’s husband - a man whom she famously sued over credit for her work – and you’ve got what’s sure to be a twisted delight.

3. “Welcome To New York” – Taylor Swift Admittedly, the Global Ambassador to NYC title seems rather farfetched for this Pennsylvania-by-way-of-Nashville girl, but I challenge anyone who has ever moved to the Big Apple to not get caught up in the exuberance and reinvention that T. Swizzle so perfectly captures. After all, everybody here was someone else before.

4. “Dangerous” – David Guetta feat. Sam Martin

5. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Just because you don’t want to ride it doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate a thoroughbred, and these gorgeous beauties from around the world are most certainly thoroughbreds. This year, Adriana and Allesandra are wearing the sparkly million dollar bras, but hotties like Candice, Doutzen, and Jordan Dunn won’t let a little bling - or a rock star - outshine them. Bring on the babes!

Ever wonder what would have happened if Christopher Cross ditched the mean streets of…wherever he’s from...for the strobe lights and club drugs of Ibiza? Well, thanks to this synthesizer-tastic jam, you can wonder no more. Oh, David Guetta, your magic is real and I believe in you.

Sophie Lowe A LL G OOD VIBES WORDS BY DIO ANTHONY PHOTOS BY DARREN TIESTE

AT 24, ENGLISH-BORN ACTRESS SOPHIE LOWE POSSESSES A BEAUTIFUL AND STRIKING FACE, BLONDE LOCKS WORTHY OF RAPUNZEL’S ENVY, AND A KNACK FOR FULLY EMBODYING A CHARACTER, AND COME 2015, SHE’LL CHARM US ALL OVER AGAIN IN A&E’S LONG AWAITED SERIES THE RETURNED. Last year, she spearheaded her own series in ABC’s Once Upon A Time in Wonderland, playing the all too famous character of curious and beloved Alice: sweet with a hint of madness. The series ran a full first season and followed Alice and what seemed to be her best friend at the time, the knave of hearts (Michael Socha) on a quest to find and rescue Alice’s true love, a genie by the name of Cyrus (Peter Gadiot). This time around, things aren’t so colorful. The Returned, an American take on the international Emmy-winning French series Las Revenants, revolves around a town in which its local dead begin to reappear. Lowe plays Lena Winship, a hard partying girl trying to find her place in the world while coping with her twin sister’s death a few years back. “She’s rebelled and become a bit of a bad child, obviously trying to deal in her own way,” says Lowe. “Ever since her sister’s passing, she’s always felt like a part of her is missing. She loves boys and she loves to drink. So, she’s a bit out there, completely different from Alice,” she explains while letting out a giggle. For those impressed with Lowe’s portrayal of the intuitive girl who falls down the rabbit hole as much as I was, it won’t be a surprise for you to hear that green-screen work, as hard as it 63

may appear, wasn’t exactly challenging for this young actress. “It was weird at first,” she admits, “looking at something that’s not there...pretending a dragon’s coming when it was just a screen. But overall, it’s a set, and on a set everything is fake. I’ll have to pretend this is my real house, or that I actually love this person. So it all just felt right. Except there was bright green everywhere.” Green or not, Lowe’s Alice was one to take note of. Living in a much darker and twisted reality, this Alice was fierce with the courage of ten, leaving behind those who chose not to believe in her, and moving forward with those who did. “It all happened so fast,” she remembers of her initial involvement with the show. “I didn’t have time to dwell, which is great, because it was such a big thing at the time, that thinking too much into it would have freaked me out. I loved every minute of it, and made it my own. No one had really played her in that way before, so I just went for it.” Outside of acting, the soft-spoken Lowe lends her ever-growing talent to music, performing under the alias of S.O.L.O. (how clever is she?). “I’ve been singing for ages, but finally got the courage to put out my first EP about a year ago.” Lowe’s friend assisted in producing her

five-song EP, which one listen to will have anyone swaying side to side to the rhythm of her sultry voice. She says her music is all about vibes and feeling. She cites Nancy Sinatra and Fiona Apple as top influencers, and Swedish sensation Lykee Li as her favorite. “My music is all about connection and lyrics,” she explains. “I listen to music to relate to it, so I thought, why not write my own and maybe do the same for someone else.” So how does a working actress manage to stay out of LA for so long? The answer is, you don’t, unless you’re Sophie Lowe. Having spent four months in Vancouver in 2013, and six months this year, Lowe’s gotten used to mingling in the other town for actors. “I’ve been really lucky like that,” she tells me. “With Wonderland, I put my first audition down in Sydney, and then flew to the US to test. At first I wasn’t sure about LA, just coming out here annually, for three months at a time,” Lowe confesses. “But the more I come here and the more friends I’ve got now, I really like it.” Lost in thought, she says, “You know, I particularly enjoy Los Feliz and Echo Park.” And all I could think was, sounds like the best location for S.O.L.O.’s first gig! THE NEW

Red Carpet

RULES

BY STEVEN CARVER

THERE’S ONE SUCCESSFUL RULE IN PLAYING THE RED CARPET GAME. IN SHORT, THE WINNING FORMULA CAN BE CALCULATED IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER: DRESS CELEBRITY X IN THE PERFECT OUTFIT FOR THE RIGHT EVENT, AND THE FASHION DESIGNER’S Q VALUE RISES.

Even with the positive buzz, some looks can – at times – feel a little mannered. Too polished and perfect. They’re paying homage to the designer, but most designers don’t make red carpet dresses for the younger generation. And nothing looks worse than 20-somethings looking twice their age. For up-and-comers, they’re searching for something fresher. As much as they appreciate the fastidious workmanship of haute ateliers, the red carpet isn’t always appropriate for fishtail trains and oceans of paillettes. For those who want less sparkle while still remaining sophisticated, there’s Rosetta Getty, a label that strikes a balance between not-so-basic basics and effortless eveningwear. Gracefully floating between the worlds of fashion (she was a model in her formative years, and has launched two previous clothing labels) and Hollywood (Getty is married to actor Balthazar Getty), Getty creates pieces for women who are looking for casual elegance in their everyday lives. It’s the LA way of dressing. YOUNG HOLLYWOOD issue - BELLOmag.com

80

For those who want less sparkle while still remaining sophisticated, there’s Rosetta Getty, a label that strikes a balance between not-so-basic basics and effortless eveningwear.

To paraphrase the brand’s philosophy, the eponymously named line curates new ideas between the wearer and maker through construction and collaboration, process and presentation. With many pieces being handmade, collectability is an important part of the brand; buy it once, wear it forever. Design themes carry from collection to collection. The long, lean shapes are seen in a range of tunics, while kimonotype wrap coats add another layer to the cocooning aesthetic. With most pieces designed with minimal trims and closures, the luxurious, dimensional fabrics (such as Japanese cotton twill and double-bonded wool cashmere) add softness to austere silhouettes. A jet set practically makes the mix-andmatch pieces seasonless, perfect for the lifestyle of a starlet. Whether it’s an ingénue or an industry icon, Hollywood is keeping an eye on this designer. With Instagram-loving celebrities obsessed with their #OOTD, discovering an under-the-radar talent who appreciates depth and texture (Getty worked with California-based artist John Knuth on her fall 2014 collection) is always a pleasure. The red carpet rules have changed. With designers such as Rosetta Getty, it’s now up to the stars to play this new, sartorial game. 81

SASHA PIETERSE, THE LADY-PACK’S LEADER, HAS BEEN THERE FROM THE START AND NOW, FIVE SEASONS LATER, HAVING PASSED THE 100TH EPISODE MARK, THE 18 YEAR-OLD RETURNS TO THE SERIES IN A DIFFERENT FORM: ALIVE, BUT NOT SO WELL.

“It’s insane. I can’t believe that we’ve done that many episodes or that it’s been five years,” she says. This past summer the ABC Family series was picked up for two additional seasons, ahead of its fifth season premiere. It’s a good year to be a Liar in Rosewood, and all the love and support is not lost on young Pieterse, who attributes much of the show’s success to their much-adored crew. “There are a lot of elements that go into making a great show. But someone’s got to shine a light on you and do all the right tricks. [The crew is] a huge part of the show’s success.” When the show premiered in 2010, Pieterse was 14 years old, going against the grain and playing opposite actresses who were well over the legal age, but it wasn’t her first time. She played a six-year-old two years older than her real age in her debut role as Buffy Davis on The WB’s revival series Family Affair. “I’ve been used to that all my life,” she admits. “I was homeschooled and graduated at 14. All my friends are older. It’s super natural for me.” Even more natural was her sudden title of growing icon in the Gay community, lending her skills to bringing authentic storylines for gay youth like she did in 2013’s indie hit G.B.F., and continues to do so time and time again on her hit series. “You know, I never imagined that I would be that,” she says to me, proud and laughing. “But I’ve gotten that comment a few times now, and it cracks me up. We had the G.B.F. DVD 107

release party at The Abbey, and the director’s friend came up to me and gushed about me being his Queen idol. He went on and on. It’s an honor and a lot of fun.”

five, reinstating Pieterse’s character into the show for good (we hope), wowing fans and putting all speculations to a close; Alison DiLaurentis was alive, and managed to keep it a secret for five years.

I get to do a lot things out of the ordinary working on the show, but being buried alive is still the craziest up to date. The South African-born American actress appreciates the praise, but such would be said about anyone who agrees to be buried alive for the sake of a take. That’s right, it was really her hand. Pieterse confesses that during the first two seasons things were running mellow on the wow-factor, but they have since escalated. “I get to do a lot things out of the ordinary working on the show, but being buried alive is still the craziest up to date,” she explains. “When they first teased that moment, it was just my hand coming out of the ground, and we did several versions of it. But for the fourth season finale I was actually buried,” she said, recalling a few moments of terror. “It was four in the morning, and they dug a six-foot hole and started burying me alive. It was realistic and freezing, I had sap dripping down my arm and fake lightning in my face. Of course our prop guy Adam, who was pouring all the dirt on me, thought it was the best thing ever.” It was that very scene that propelled the girls into a wild season

This winter, she’s out of the tube again and onto the big screen in Inherent Vice, based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Pynchon. She plays a character she assures is worlds different than her sometimes-evil high school other half. “It’s a very dark movie, and our director Paul Thomas Anderson is really putting his own spin to it.” Set in the 1970s, the film also stars Joaquin Phoenix as a private investigator investigating a disappearance; Josh Brolin and Reese Witherspoon are also among the glossy cast. If the mere mention of Hollywood greats in a film with America’s favorite Liar doesn’t entice you, the name of her character will. “I don’t think I will ever have a better character name,” she presses. “Her name is Japonica Fenway. She’s involved in cocaine, and I can say that I have a lot of interesting scenes with Martin Short and Joaquin.” What those scenes might be is a secret this liar is going to have to keep this time; there’s already one presumed dead girl in the movie. Starlet

WORDS BY DIO ANTHONY PHOTOS BY JSQUARED PHOTOGRAPHY

IF 2014 WAS ANYBODY’S YEAR, IT WAS RITA VOLK’S. THE UZBEKISTAN-BORN ACTRESS STARS AS SEXUALLY CONFUSED TEEN AMY RAUDENFELD ON MTV’S BREAKOUT SUCCESS, THE QUIRKY, ROMANTIC COMEDY SERIES FAKING IT. On camera, Volk is the voice of reason, and oftentimes a bit neurotic. Offscreen, she’s as real as they come; nothing to fake here, not even the very special excitement of having her own show picked up to series (a moment she remembers to the tee). At first the comedy was received with mixed reviews. Critics deemed it offensive because of its less-than-honest plot... but the world would have something very different to say. It was October 18th of 2013, a date Volk has known her whole life to be her father’s birthday. “I thought, “I’m going to go home to San Francisco this weekend and it’s either going to be really great, or really shitty,”” she admits. “Because I’d have to tell my parents that we didn’t get picked up. I was so nervous. On that day, my dad was at work and I called him and I said, “well, I don’t have a birthday present for you, but we got picked up!”” Two seasons later, Volk reveals that this phone call alone has been the most memorable moment out of all the things she’s been able to do following her overnight success. The single-camera comedy created by Carter Covington premiered on MTV on the evening of April 22nd, 2014, and it wasn’t long before the verdict was in... for the most part anyway. People loved it, prompting a quick second season order and an even quicker second season premiere date. “It has become such a resource for kids. I know it doesn’t rake in 10 million viewers a week, but to the people that watch 121

it, it means a lot to them,” says Volk. With the second season in full swing, the network picked up the high school comedy for an additional ten episodes, putting it amongst MTV success stories like the wildly popular Awkward and the very sexy Teen Wolf. No people were faking their love for this show, and the shot-callers at MTV weren’t either. “It was kind of like fate that I got the part, because I went in as Karma and then booked the role of Amy. It’s funny because the more time passes by, I realize how similar I am to her,” says the 24-year-old. “A lot of what she does and how she perceives things, I think, is driven by the fact that she has this sense of really being able to take herself out of a situation and really knowing what’s important. On my end, I can relate to that. Growing up, when I moved to the states, my parents were on welfare for a while. So the last thing on my mind was, “am I wearing the coolest jeans? Am I fitting in?” You get this higher sense of awareness of what really goes on in the world,” she recalls. Volk remembers letting the magic of the movies guide and teach her. Not being able to speak English, the cultureshocked newbie hosted 3-person movie nights with her parents, watching American box-office classics like Terminator 2 and Titanic. “I remember watching Titanic for the first time,” she remembers. It was just like, that was Hollywood. But it represented so much more than Hollywood: [it was] this new life and this new world we were living in. I learned a lot from just watching movies. It’s all I did; I was that kid in

front of the TV set everyday,” she says. “That’s when I realized I wanted to be a part of that world.” But it would take her a little longer than she expected to have her well-deserved moment in the spotlight. Receiving a scholarship to Duke University, Rita Volk would graduate Pre-med, only to return to the west coast, this time to Los Angeles, at last. “I loved learning and I loved medicine, but it was weird because I felt like I was living two lives. There was what I wanted to do, which was act, and there was what I felt I had to do,” she says, sounding more and more like her character Amy. “It wasn’t what I wanted to get out of bed every morning and do everyday. In retrospect, I’m glad that I had the experience. You don’t realize how much you learn until you get out of it and grow up a little bit. I had a really great education, and I just realized that probably within the last few years.” Her high school years were riddled with all the expectations and conventions of an American high school. Yet much like her character in the series, she didn’t care too much for them even back then. “You know, I really tried to be a part of it all. I was on the tennis team and the few clubs that I could do. I think it was more so my perception of it, the day-today wanting to be there. My best friend at the time, she was really active and [joined] every club she could. I just kind of wanted to get out and see the world. I wanted to act, and that environment wasn’t necessarily going to get me there.” I for one am glad she made it there after all. December 2014 - BELLO

Lyndie Greenwood THE EVER EVOLVING LIFE AND TIMES OF

WORDS BY JEROD WILLIAMS PHOTOS BY EMILIE ELIZABETH

AT FIRST SIGHT, ACTRESS LYNDIE GREENWOOD’S CLASSIC BEAUTY CAN BE COMPARED TO A COUPLE OF OTHER ACTRESSES IN THE BUSINESS RIGHT NOW SUCH AS JASMINE GUY OR ROSARIO DAWSON, BUT THE COMPARISONS STOP THERE, AS THIS CANADIAN NEWCOMER IS GRADUALLY MAKING HER MARK IN THE ACTING WORLD.

With a list of minor roles in short films and guest star appearances in television series such as Being Erica and Saving Hope on her resume, she garnered attention playing Sonya (the head of Division IT) in the CW hit series Nikita, which lasted three seasons; this role soon opened doors for the actress, who now has a contract role playing the spontaneous, no-nonsense demon fighter Jenny Mills in the FOX sleeper hit series Sleepy Hollow. Bello Mag caught up with the busy actress to discuss life, the evolution of her acting career, her life on-and-off camera, and all things Sleepy Hollow.

things aside, Greenwood is also versed in martial arts, where she parlayed her “kick-ass” hobby into a kung fu short film, and that’s where she fell in love with acting and decided she wanted to give it a shot. After graduating from the University of Toronto, she began to study acting intensively, training and taking lessons in her down time to sharpen her skills. Her training ranged from attending classes at Lewis Baumander’s acting studio to studying the Meisner technique with Jason Fraser and working John Gordon at Pro Actor’s Lab, which would prepare her for auditions and her current role, that of Jenny Mills. “I am getting “comfortable” playing this enigmatic and spontaneous character,” she says. When we asked her about which actor she would love to work with, someone who could challenge her, her immediately response was Tilda Swinton. “There is a certain elegance and grace about her that makes her wonderful. I would love to act opposite of her.”

“I grew up in Toronto, Canada and I had a very unconventional upbringing and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world, because it has made me who I am as a person today.” She is referring here to her mother, who is from Tobago (in the Caribbean), and her father, a Canadian. When asked about how she “stumbled” into the realm of entertainment, she explains that her career path started out with her interest in biology, which led to her getting her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto. “I’m a bit of a nerd and a geek like that. I love science and what it entails.” All nerdy and obscure 139

When we talked to her about working on the set of Sleepy Hollow, she has nothing but humbling things to say about her experience. “Working on Sleepy Hollow is a lot of fun, and being

on the set where it is dark and elaborate is absolutely amazing (she laughs). It’s great when you can bring someone from the outside to the set so they can see the elaborate decorations. It’s definitely a great job. I love everyone I work with and I love playing this character.” When she’s not crazy busy working, you can find her spending quality time with someone very special in her life: her puppy, Ripley. “I love my puppy very much, and whenever there’s down time, I love to take walks on the beach. It clears my head and resets my mind from the hectic work schedule. I love to exercise, [and] do martial arts and Pilates to keep myself active.” When we asked her about the values she puts out in the universe that keep her grounded, she goes with the old but timeless adage, “Be true to yourself and everything you stand for.” As for future projects for this up-andcoming beauty, Sleepy Hollow will be keeping her busy throughout the year. You will be able to catch Sleepy Hollow Mondays on FOX, and expect to see more of Jenny’s evolution. Although her plate is definitely full working on the show, she’s excited and is looking forward to seeing how Jenny plays out. December 2014 - BELLO

CASA DE CAMPO:

Hollywood’s Other Country House BELLO TRAVELER ARIEL PAREDES ESCAPES THE WINTER BY CHECKING INTO A CARIBBEAN “CULTURAL WONDERLAND.”

When first offered the opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic, I was thrilled. I had visited years before and remembered how much I loved this magical island in the Caribbean. With its crystal-clear warm water and white sand beaches, I was immediately on board to head back. I was particularly interested in visiting Casa De Campo, because it sits on

Spanish-speaking skills as we were finally headed to Casa De Campo, the “Sporting Life” resort. As soon as I entered the lobby, I was enthusiastically greeted and handed keys to my own private golf cart to maneuver around the resort. After an insanely luxurious shower, I crashed for a bit before waking up bright-eyed and eager for the beginning of my many activities. After breakfast at the Lago Grill, I was off to the nearby private Mediterraneanstyle marina. I jumped on an exclusive catamaran to Catalina island, where we swam, ate, and tried to remain cool in to take off to Casa De Campo. Once I jumped on the plane and headed to Santo Domingo, I stepped onto one of the most festive flights I’ve ever been on. As I listened to people shouting “Mámi” and “Aqui Aqui,” I knew this was the beginning of a good trip. I landed at night, which thankfully brought cooler temperatures to the islands (and by cooler, I mean upper 80s with 100% humidity). I needed Bienvenido (yes, my driver’s name was Bienvenido, which translates to “welcome”) to blast the air conditioning so I wouldn’t soak through my clothes. With Bachata music playing in the background, I shook the dust off of my the beaming 90-degree heat. I had the opportunity to paddle board for the first time...talk about a serious ab workout! Since my abs needed some rest, it was then off to a soothing massage back at the resort. With my own private casita, the hot stone massage was the kind of pampering I needed to work out my kinks. The day only got better with a extravagant dinner on the water at The Beach Club by Le Cirque. I slept for what seemed like a blink and was then up the next day, ready to hit Rancho Peligro for horseback riding. My tour guide, who spoke no English, jumped on the back of my horse (due to a little miscommunication), and we took a nice ride together in the 147

Dominican countryside alongside the wild buffalo. After lunch at La Caña, I was back out in the great outdoors for a safari at the shooting range. Armed with real guns and live ammunition, we were set to shoot skeet and hit flying clay disks. The kickback on the guns was quite shocking; I ended up with a few bruises, but I felt that it gave me some real credibility. I also learned a rather fascinating funfact: the safari landscape was designed by helicopter for aerial views because it’s in the middle of 245 acres of plush forest. Later that evening we headed up to Altos de Chavon, a quaint little artist town modeled after a 16th-century Mediterranean village above the Chavon River. We were transported back to another era as we walked the cobblestone streets. We even had the wonderful fortune of having a private cocktail hour in the middle of the Grecian-style amphitheater, which has played host to everyone from Sting and Carlos Santana to Andrea Bocceli and Frank Sinatra. The Chavon River is also the location for a few little films you might have heard of like Jurassic Park and Apocalypse Now. The evening appropriately concluded with dinner at La Piazzetta. With libations flowing and cheers all around, I was grateful for the memorable trip and for being surrounded by such delightful company. Serenaded by two gentlemen

singing the music of the Gypsy Kings, I suddenly realized with a twinge of regret that this was my final night in this magical place. I quickly made a mental note to grab one last freshly squeezed juice before reluctantly returning my golf cart keys in the morning.

Casa de Campo, “The Sporting Life,” is such a breathtaking place, and isn’t just for celebrities to rest their weary feet. Avid golfers, outdoor types, and anyone who loves a good beach will fall in love with every acre. With four legendary golf courses designed by the world renowned designer Pete Dye (Teeth of the Dog golf course is ranked number one in the Caribbean), this destination is one that should not be missed. More than a playground for celebrity travelers like Drake, Rihanna, and the infamous Kardashians, this exquisite getaway is a relaxing, cultural wonderland. With golf courses, beaches, boats, tennis, restaurants, and shopping, no one can say this isn’t a special place for all to visit.

TRAVEL

TPC Cartagena: A BEACH AND GOLF PARADISE BY DEE TRILLO Fashion, Beauty, Entertainment and Travel Expert| HauteFrugalista.com| @HauteFrugalista| HauteFrugalista@gmail.com

When we think about a travel destination, the first thing that comes to mind is a sunny place filled with clear waters and soft sand. Somewhere where the food is fresh, the drinks are cold, and the breeze is warm. A hidden gem that gives us enough space to relax, but does not makes us feel so bored that we miss home, and crave to go back. A place that allures us with exactly what we love, be it art, architecture, nightlife, or perhaps the idea of outdoor adventures or extreme sports. Finding a spot where we can get in touch with our inner zen, indulge in historic learning, dance until sunrise, and get sporty while overlooking the sea seems more difficult than finding a needle in a haystack...that is, unless you visit TPC Cartagena at Karibana.

Bienvenido a Cartagena! The gorgeous beach and golf resort offers everything above and more. It’s no light task to consider a vacation to Colombia, considering the negative stereotypes perpetuated since the

YOUNG HOLLYWOOD issue - BELLOmag.com

country’s political issues of the 1980’s. However, to dismiss such a perfect location would be to miss the opportunity to truly get to know a very special place. Cartagena is one of those cities that will enchant you as soon as you arrive. Surrounded by the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, and protected by walls and fortresses built by the Spaniards in the 16th and 17th centuries, the city is nothing short of striking. The magnitude of Cartagena’s historic background is shadowed only by the immensity of the sea and the clearness of the sky over it. During our exclusive trip to the opening of TPC Cartagena at Karibana, we were able to experiment with food, experience the local culture, and learn to love the game of golf. Who wouldn’t fall in love with such a luxe sport if entitled to enjoy a property that would allow you to touch the sand after hitting the ball? The beautifully crafted course, created by none other than renowned designer Jack Nicklaus, allows you to have fun while giving you the edge of an intricate field.

154

The main goal is for enthusiasts and amateurs to feel they’re playing like the pros, because the course is worthy of a champion from the Masters.

So, Where Do We Begin...? TPC placed a bet on a region considered to be a high risk, but it all seems to be working out, as the integrity between leisure and sport is unique compared to other world class golf resorts, and fascinating to a traveler in every single way. The property is the ideal paradise for the golf lover who wants to enjoy his or her time with family or catching up with friends while still playing a game or two. Anyone would agree that it sounds very appealing to spend the day lounging by the pool, running around the beach making sand castles, or getting a well-deserved massage at the spa. At Karibana, you can experience it all: spend hours golfing from the moment the sun rises over the mountains until it fades under the sea, relax in the spa with a time off at the sauna or an aromatherapy massage, or maybe feel the warm sand and dip your toes in the water while enjoying typical dishes like coconut rice, beef with sauce, fried plantains and avocado salad...all while sipping on their refreshing - and delicious signature coconut lemonade. Having the opportunity to spend a day on the beach and golf at night is one of the most unforgettable experiences. The glowing field overlooking the moon over the sea and the freshness of the breeze will entice you and charm your senses. What is most amazing about the location is that Cartagena is not only a culturally-infused spot, but a goto for those seeking to dance the night

155

away. There, you must head out to the city to live like a true Colombian does: fully and loudly. The bold colors of the balconies are reminiscent of colonial times, the smell of fresh tropical fruits makes your mouth water, the rhythmic music sets off your impulse to dance on the streets...and let’s not forget about how the grandiosity of the walls, still standing four centuries after they were erected, inspire the utmost awe. The stones, cannonballs and stunning views carry a magnetism that will stay in your memory and leave you no choice but to fall in love with the city.

Do Good, Feel Good! Despite being one of the most wellknown cities in Latin America, and that fact that it is a true hot spot for travel-related spending, Cartagena still struggles to offer its citizens opportunities for progress and financial stability. However, the creation of the five-star Conrad Hotel, adjacent to TPC Cartagena, and the launch of the Karibana Championship, a Web. com tour beginning March 2015 with a purse of 700k, will help boost luxury tourism and bring more revenue to the city. TPC has shown a commitment to

continuing support for the community with integrated initiatives that will allow the company to continuously give back and positively impact the nearby towns. Creating employment is one of the priorities in a city that, in spite of the ongoing tourism, still has a high rate of low socio-economic livelihood and poverty. Some of the ongoing social projects include offering schooling for lowincome families, allocating a portion of the revenues from the tournaments to invest in the community, providing employment resources for citizens, and donating to nearby hospitals and children centers. In addition, players constantly commit their time to visit hospitals and schools and donate their time to the community by volunteering during special events. What better way to support Colombia than by giving back to those who need it the most?

Golf Olympics? Yes, Please! Since the announcement that golf will be returning to the Olympics after a single showing in 1904, the importance of the sport to society has risen has become clear to players and golf fanatics. Rio de Janeiro will be the host in 2016, bringing a hugely positive impact to Latin America on levels of economic investment and cultural recognition. Given that the global event will bring a new demographic and wave of visitors to South America, Cartagena will be able to benefit from this attention, and attract both domestic and international business and leisure travelers with its challenging and stunning TPC course. This is an event that will change not only the perception of South America as a worthy host of world events, but of golf as a respected sport. Now, let’s just hope the next golf Olympics are held at TPC Cartagena at Karibana! December 2014 - BELLO
