SAMAIRE ARMSTRONG MIGHT HAVE GREAT MEMORIES FROM THE EARLY DAYS OF HER CAREER – PLAYING ANNA ON FOX’S THE O.C., EMILY ON HBO’S ENTOURAGE, AND APPEARING ON SEVERAL OTHER SUCCESSFUL TV SERIES – BUT SHE CERTAINLY HAS NO INTEREST IN OPENING THE PROVERBIAL PHOTO BOOK FROM THAT TIME.

“HELL. NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT,” THE 34-YEAR-OLD DECLARES WITH A BIG LAUGH AT THE SUGGESTION OF LOOKING BACK AT HER YOUNGER SELF TO SEE HOW SHE’S CHANGED THROUGH THE YEARS. “I WISH I COULD GO ON THE INTERNET AND JUST DELETE A TON OF PICTURES [FROM]… WELL, I WON’T SAY THE [YEARS] SO THAT PEOPLE DON’T LOOK AT THEM. BUT THERE’S A PERIOD OF TIME IN MY YOUTH I JUST WISH I COULD ERASE.”

You could say Armstrong doesn’t want a “resurrection” of her past self, and yet, ironically, she’s been surrounded by those exact circumstances on her ABC show, Resurrection (Sundays, 9/8c), ever since deceased residents of Arcadia, Missouri - a real town southwest of St. Louis – suddenly began returning from the dead. As Elaine, the actress’s onscreen dad, Caleb (played by Sam Hazeldine), was the second person to return at the end of the show’s pilot, which premiered in March of 2014. Understandably, her character has subsequently ridden a rollercoaster of emotions since that day, especially when Caleb’s criminal actions catch up with him. Armstrong points to that extra time Elaine had with her father as the character’s defining moment. “When Elaine went to her father’s jail cell and basically had this ‘aha’ moment and realized it wasn’t anger she felt towards him but sorrow and pity,” she explains, “[that] brought [her] into Season 2 with this chutzpah. She came in like, I’m going to take care of this. I think as each episode progressed she found that more and more, and that’s what we’ll see toward the end of this season for Elaine.” That’s about as much of a tease she can give about what’s to come on Resurrection, a series produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment (though she did confirm Elaine has a major upcoming moment, one she has already filmed). What she will elaborate on, however, is her joy in playing the character and watching the direction in which the writers have taken her. “[Elaine has] become stronger [and] more capable, more than she already thought herself able to be. And that’s cool. I like that! I like 101

bossing people around and taking charge, and I find that that’s what she’s starting to be more and more of in the scenes.” Perhaps it has something to do with the actress’s own influence on a certain writing staff... “I think that probably... and I hate to admit it, but...I might be kind of bossy,” she laughs. Bossy, maybe, but it’s clear Armstrong also has an undeniably playful energy, something she says wasn’t always the case growing up training in martial arts, which brought a “sense of seriousness” to her life. Born in Tokyo, she spent her early years in Japan with her parents while her father studied hopology, examining combative behavior. “It wasn’t for sport. We weren’t training to get colorful belts; we were training to fight and survive. So in the back of my mind [as a kid], I was always waiting for this potential fight that I had to get into,” Armstrong says. Years later, after moving to America and briefly attending the University of Arizona, she found that “fight” in Hollywood, where she focused her attentions on acting and her own fashion line, Naru, channeling her martial arts training into her new ventures in ways even she didn’t expect. “A lot of things we were learning in martial arts and different trainings is the mental state through a preparedness and peace of mind,” she explains. “This lesson in particular was about not having an emotional reaction to anything that was coming at you. So if I was about to get hit by the sword, I got really mad; it really pissed me off! But the appropriate response is not to take it personally, but look for the opening and make your cut. So that’s what I’ve learned to apply, in a strange

way, through my creativity and turning my art into a business and my acting into a business.” Armstrong’s acting business also includes several episodes of CBS’s The Mentalist, a short and fatal stint on FX’s recently concluded Sons of Anarchy, and a supporting role as Lindsay Lohan’s best friend in 2006’s Just My Luck, a movie she admittedly hasn’t seen in a while. “Sometimes it’ll be on and I’ll watch a scene or two. I saw it when it came out,” she almost ashamedly reveals. “Although I will say, there’s a line my character says in the movie that I often say: When one door closes, two windows open.” It’s fitting that her lasting memory of that movie is a motivational quote. One look at her Instagram account and it’s obvious that this mother of a toddler son gravitates toward great words of wisdom. “I really cherish my Instagram. It brings me great joy. While I do love a selfie, mainly I feel like it’s an expression of myself. I’d love to be able to have witty commentary and be that person that could write cute little 140 character sentences on Twitter, but I’m just not that person,” she says. “I have a lot of people in my life, and I feel a small responsibility to people who enjoy what I do and want to follow me on social media to spread joy and inspiration rather than bitching or negativity or anything like that.” So when she posts memes that include gems like “You just have to trust your own madness,” “How to be successful: Focus on your own shit,” and “Make your own magic,” she means it, because she’s living it. Spotlight on the Artist!

Kate Somerville BY NICOLE WALMSLEY, BEAUTY EDITOR

INSTAGRAM | TWITTER | FACEBOOK: @KATESOMERVILLESKINCARE WWW.KATESOMERVILLE.COM KATE SOMERVILLE IS THE CREATOR OF THE SUCCESSFUL AND WIDELY KNOWN SKINCARE LINE OF THE SAME NAME. SHE CREATED THE LINE IN PART BECAUSE SHE UNDERSTANDS FIRST HAND WHAT IT’S LIKE TO HAVE SKIN CONCERNS. READ ON TO LEARN MORE ABOUT KATE AND KATE SOMERVILLE SKINCARE.

Where were you born? Fresno, California. Where do you live now? Santa Barbara. What did you want to be when you grew up? A whale trainer. I love animals! How were you introduced to skincare and when did you choose it as a career? Skincare is more to me than just my job, it’s my calling. Growing up, I had horrible eczema, and I looked for different remedies to solve my own skin issues. That’s how I got into skincare, because I knew what it was like to feel uncomfortable in your own skin. What is the moment you consider your big break? I actually don’t feel like I’ve had a big break; I’ve had to work really hard to get where I am today. Tell us about Kate Somerville Skincare. Real results! Flawless skin isn’t just reserved for celebrities. Everyone has the right to be radiant! When I started my clinic, my job was helping the person in front of me. Now, my goal is to help people worldwide. It’s about bringing my clinic and my expertise to you at home. I translate the treatments from my clinic to an at-home version. This way, you can experience the FABULOUS issue - BELLOmag.com

same, gorgeous results as you would at my clinic. Whatever your challenge, whatever your skin type, I’m here to give you everything you need to completely transform your complexion. Why did you want to create your own skincare line? When I began my education in the field of esthetics over 20 years ago, I knew I wanted to focus on skin health, so I decided to work side by side with doctors, to complement their services. I then made my dream of my own clinic a reality. My goal was to deliver results you could get in a doctor’s office in a comfortable, beautiful environment. I’ve spent my entire professional career getting to the bottom of skin issues and solving them. I can look at someone, and know what they need to do to see real results. I created my skincare collection in direct response to the challenges I see on a daily basis in my clinic, the same skin health issues men and women of all ages and ethnicities face everywhere. I can’t see everyone personally, but through my products, I can help people see real results in their skin. Who in your industry do you look up to? Every single woman who has helped pave the way, like Estee Lauder, Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden.

What inspires you in your work? What inspires me the most is hearing the personal skincare stories of my clients and customers. It’s such an emotional thing, to feel comfortable in your own skin. They tell me that I’ve changed their lives and restored not only their skin health, but their confidence. That is what makes me happy! Some people say it’s just skin, but not for me! What part of your job do you enjoy the most? Being able to change someone’s life through their skin health is everything to me; it’s why I do what I do! I truly believe it’s my gift to be able to look at someone and see what they need in order to achieve skin health. Everyone has their own personal skincare journey. Mine happens to be with eczema. Many of my clients are concerned with the signs of aging, issues like melasma after pregnancy, or they’re dealing with adult acne. It’s so personal. Seeing someone overcome their skin challenges is what this is all about for me. It feeds my soul. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve met with people who have used my products and want to tell me all about how Kate Somerville Skincare has changed their skin. 106

Trickle-Down

Technology BY STEVEN CARVER

STROLLING THROUGH A MAJOR DEPARTMENT STORE, CONSUMERS INEVITABLY LAND SOMEWHERE NEAR A BEAUTY COUNTER. IT’S INEVITABLE. THEY’RE DESIGNED TO BE NEAR AN ENTRY OR EXIT AND ARE INESCAPABLE. THEY’RE ALSO DESIGNED TO CAPTURE THE MINDS OF THOSE WHOSE BEAUTY BELIEFS ARE IN NEED OF A LITTLE MOISTURIZING. Mid-range brands take up the most real estate with glossy surfaces, perfect lighting, and congenial service; they need to prove their worth. Years of research and millions of dollars spent on technological discoveries benefit everyone, especially consumers. Whereas newly-launched products can be pricey, a trickle-down effect eventually reaches more accessible lines. Estee Lauder – owners of entry-level Clinique and high-end La Mer, amongst others – has pioneered this process. With the introduction of Re-Nutriv Ultimate Diamond Sculpting/Refinishing Dual Infusion, Estee Lauder developed a two-part elixir (over five years in the making) that promises youthful looking skin in a bottle. A golden vial contains a black diamond truffle extract, which is blended with a technology breakthrough that supports skin cells’ natural activation of SIRT-6* (one of skin’s longevity genes) to help preserve and restore skin density, suppleness and bounce. Advanced lifting technologies help promote skin’s natural production of collagen and elastin, while refined 24K gold – in combination with other anti-irritants – helps calm and soothe skin. The platinum vial holds a high potency blend of skin refinishers to resurface and retexture the skin. South sea pearls add a source of luminosity and skin feels velvety smooth and looks perfected, more even-toned and naturally radiant. The two silky elixirs remain inert while separate, but when combined, transform every facet of skin for a refined appearance. With supermodel Stephanie Seymour fronting the campaign, it adds another element of desirability and relatability to the product. Having posed for legendary photographers (Richard Avedon, Herb Ritts) and acting as muse to fashion designers (Azzedine Alaia) in the past, Seymour is now a wife and mother, yet still as model-esque as ever. The glamorous ads whisper, Buy this product and look like me. While truffles might not make their way into mass-market beauty products (mushrooms are a better bet), there’s a strong possibility the technology behind Re-Nutriv’s Ultimate Diamond Sculpting/ Refinishing Dual Infusion will be a part of a morning routine in the near future.
