Letter from the Editor The start of a new year, the start of a new day, the promise of a new beginning... In a world where instant gratification has become the norm, we have decided to give you the very same by splitting up the original BELLO mag format into smaller bites that will be distributed all throughout the month. We are hoping to give you the opportunity to enjoy better, share more, and become more inspired. At the same time, this means that you will be getting even more original content and that each of our covers will finally get your undivided attention. We begin the month with our cover, Katharine McPhee (Scorpion), beautifully draped in Valentino and photographed by an amazing team led by Photographer Yoni Goldberg and Fashion Director Warren Alfie Baker.

As I write this letter, I am listening to “Living for Love” by Madonna, the ultimate chameleon who is incredibly finding yet another way to masterfully reinvent herself, and I cannot agree more with the song’s message during this holiday season. All we need is love, and every morning is a new opportunity to become better versions of ourselves: to be more FABULOUS. After over 80 covers and over 150 original exclusive photo shoots in 2014, we are ready to make 2015 even better and more creative. Happy New Year! Aleksandar Tomovic (editor in chief)

TAYLOR SWIFT MAY BE THE CURRENT GLOBAL TOURISM AMBASSADOR TO NEW YORK CITY, BUT SHE’S NOT THE ONLY YOUNG STARLET TO FIND HERSELF FALLING HEAD OVER HEELS IN LOVE WITH THE BIG APPLE. ACTRESS, SINGER, AND LA-NATIVE KATHARINE MCPHEE IS CLEARLY JUST AS SMITTEN. “I LOVE THAT CITY SO MUCH,” SHE REVEALS. “THERE’S SOMETHING NOT ONLY CINEMATIC ABOUT SHOOTING THERE, BUT I JUST LOVE THE INSPIRATION YOU FIND. I FEEL REALLY ENGAGED AND INSPIRED BY STEPPING OUT THE FRONT DOOR AND JUST SEEING WHAT’S RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME.”
The world famous street fashion is just one of the things the actress couldn’t help but get caught up in. “Living in New York allowed me access to inspiration on the streets and the ability to achieve that look on my own. Moving there made me more aware and it made me care more about what I was putting on my body. Like even if I was just going to set in the morning and no one was going to see me, it didn’t matter, because I cared.” For those of you living under a rock, the set she’s referring to would be NBC’s mega-ambitious, Steven Spielbergproduced cult-fave, Smash, on which the former American Idol finalist starred as wide-eyed country girl Karen Cartwright, a Broadway baby whose outsized voice and talent were matched only by McPhee’s. The show lasted just two seasons, but the actress has nothing but “fond memories of the things that [she and her cast mates] got to do and accomplish on that show.” And after all, it did introduce her to one of the newest loves of her life. “I’m actually starting to think about where I’d like to spend my hiatus and I’m even considering getting out of LA and spending my two months off in New York, if it’s possible.” The actress is currently back in Los Angeles fulltime, starring on one of the buzziest new shows of the season, CBS’s ultra9
hip, action-packed drama, Scorpion. The series - which centers on a group of geniuses recruited to join the front lines of the fight against modern digital terrorism - is quite a change of pace from her last gig, but that was kind of the point. “What I liked the most about it was that it was a really different project from Smash and I was going to be able to tackle an even more grownup character. Not so much in age, but you don’t see a lot of young single mothers who have their lives together on television.”
will be like, That was such a Paige moment!” It’s the sort of affectionate mockery that can only be shared between costars who actually like one another, but for the affable McPhee, this is much more the norm than the exception. In fact, she’s even remained in touch with the unforgettable cast of her breakout film, 2008’s beloved The House Bunny. “Anna [Faris], Kat Dennings and I are all CBS family members now; I see them at events, and I’d sometimes run
It’s funny how the characters you play are sometimes similar to you and how you find things [within them] that help you connect on a deeper level. And you certainly don’t see anyone like Paige Dineen, hardworking waitress and indefatigable mom to young genius Ralph. That she also happens to be the emotional heart of the Scorpion crew was simply icing on the cake for McPhee. “I’m definitely more of an emotionally intelligent person, which is why I think I’m suited for this role. It’s funny how the characters you play are sometimes similar to you and how you find things [within them] that help you connect on a deeper level. I’ll say things [on set] and the other actors
into Emma Stone on the streets of New York when I was living there.” That the cast has now become a veritable “who’s who” of the new Hollywood A-list is something that isn’t lost on McPhee, either. “Besides Anna, we were all at the beginning of our careers back then. It has really been a fun group of people to be associated with. I wish we’d do some kind of fun reunion. That would be awesome.” Fingers crossed, Ms. McPhee. Fingers crossed! January 2015 - BELLO

FromFertility ToBanking How Max Levchin is Revolutionizing Our Everyday Lives in the Digital Age BY BRENT LAMBERT
WHEN PAYPAL CO-FOUNDER MAX LEVCHIN (BORN JULY 11, 1975) MADE OVER A BILLION DOLLARS WHEN HE SOLD HIS STAKE IN THE COMPANY, HIS MOTHER SAID TO HIM, “OK, NOW YOU’RE GOING TO GO TO GRADUATE SCHOOL, RIGHT?” WRONG. LEVCHIN MADE THE WISE DECISION OF STICKING WITH HIS INSTINCTS AND CONTINUING TO CREATE NEW GAME-CHANGING PRODUCTS THAT ARE HAVING ENORMOUS IMPACTS ON PEOPLE’S EVERYDAY LIVES IN THE DIGITAL AGE.
Settling in Chicago in 1991, he attended Mather High School and then earned his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1997, later cofounding two companies - NetMeridian Software and SponsorNet New Media - that made Internet tools. In 1998 Levchin and his business partners created a system that would eventually become known as PayPal. His other achievements include the founding of Slide, Yelp, and one of his newest companies, HVF (which stands for Hard, Valuable, and Fun), which explores and funds projects and companies in the area of leveraging data, such as data from analog sensors. Levchin’s arrival in the United States, however, was born out of tragic circumstances. When he was ten years old, he and his parents escaped the radioactive Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine by train, and were forced to build a new life together. Now a Silicon Valley heavyweight, Levchin is considered by his peers and his competitors to be one of the single most brilliant technological minds in the entire world.
In May 2013 Levchin and his team launched GLOW, an app designed to help parents conceive babies by gathering, processing, and interpreting a wide range of data points from the woman’s body, as well as provide essential information to the parents at precise moments along their unique conception
timeline. Not only has the app already helped a large number of test parents conceive their first babies, it is also disrupting the outrageously expensive world of IVF (in vitro fertilization), which costs more than $10,000 per treatment. The app is free to parents via a brilliant donation system courtesy of thankful 18

Now, Levchin is setting his sights on disrupting the banking industry with his brand new company, Affirm. The idea for Affirm came from his belief that the credit system as we know it is broken, as well as out of the huge amount of distrust people have for banks especially in the Millennial generation.

parents who succeeded with GLOW and want to help give back to other parents who are trying to conceive.
“A lot of younger people really just dislike big banks, or any banks really,” Levchin told USA Today. “They watched their parents suffer through a reduction in credit limit, or a mortgage that collapsed on them. They basically had a front row seat during their formative years during the 2008 financial crisis.” Affirm is set up as a consumer finance company that offers online point of sale loans that allow the client to repay in three, six, or twelve months. The interest rates are very low, but the real beauty of Affirm lies in its transparency. “People understand that money has a value that’s measured in time as much as measured in dollars,” Levchin says. “The thing that people hate about interest is not the size of the interest rate, nor is it the fact that it even exists; it’s the fact that it’s never transparent.” To learn more about Affirm, be sure to visit www.Affirm.com. The JUSE Solar Nano Smartphone Case
Aquilo is the British synthpop duo whose new EP, Human, was released this past December. Their achingly beautiful new video for “I Gave It All” was directed by Eoin Glaister, who described his interpretation of the song: “[It’s] a coming-of-age story about the loss of innocence [and] how things could have been different if the lead protagonist had pursued a relationship with her best friend instead of his older, cooler brother, and her coming to terms with this.” Take a listen and watch the video at www.AquiloMusic.com.
The new JUSE smartphone case offers a brilliant solution for folks whose phones seem to always run out of battery life at the worst possible time. The case stores solar power in a nano battery, then uses that power to recharge your phone whenever it’s needed. Your phone will never die again.
