Television is a much more intimate medium. You can literally see a person’s thoughts, whereas in theater - depending on the size of the space - that may not be the case.
1. You spent a lot of time performing on stage and even winning the NAACP Theater Award for Best Female Lead. How has doing television been different for you? Television is a much more intimate medium. You can literally see a person’s thoughts, whereas in theater - depending on the size of the space - that may not be the case. That’s the reason why everything is so much bigger and the words are so important in theater. The difference for me is scaling all of that specificity down so that I am not too big for the close-up, for example. TV is way more technical as well. Theater is a wonderful collaboration of many artists, but it is the actor’s medium; the director is guiding your creation but he or she is not editing it. That has, and still is, a big adjustment for me. Lastly, in TV, after you finish a scene...that’s it. You’ll never do it again. [It’s] very different from having weeks of rehearsal and eight shows a week for the run of a play. 2. What was the process you had to go through to book your lead in Justified? Simply, I auditioned. I pre-read with Casting Director Cami Patton, who was not familiar with my work at that time. She graciously called me back to meet and read for the creator, Graham Yost, and his executive producers. Then they 101
graciously presented me to FX and Sony, and then I got “the call.” That process took a few weeks, if I remember correctly. I am eternally grateful to them all. 3. What type of training did you have to go through to prepare to play a U.S. marshal? After I got the offer for Rachel, panic set in because I did not want to look like a girl with a gun. I immediately requested to go to Glynco, which is the training facility for the U.S. marshals. I had enough time to complete training before we began shooting the series after we wrapped the pilot. However, because of security measures put into place after 9/11, that just was not possible. The producers of the show hired Charlie Almanza, a former chief, to be our technical advisor. He got me right. He was very tough and specific. I have gone to the shooting range with him and he answered every possible question I could ask. The U.S. marshals are big fans of the show, so I would say he did a pretty good job, especially with me. 4. Now that the series is coming to an end, what was your most favorite season? Favorite episode? Season two is my personal favorite, and episode 209 still does it for me. That Margo Martindale is not to be denied, honey!
5. What is the one thing you’ve learned from working on such an amazing show? I knew this before, but the show reiterated it many times: every person on the call sheet is important. Every department invaluable. Without acknowledging and recognizing that, you don’t have an amazing anything. 6. What’s next for you after the series wraps? Prayerfully, a really compelling story that challenges me creatively with another group of phenomenal people. Quick round: 1. Stage or on-screen? Right now? On-screen...still so much to learn. 2. Vintage or modern? Vintage 3. An Oscar or an Emmy? Tony :) 4. Kentucky or California? California 5. Small town or big city? Small town March 2014 - BELLO

Makeup Palettes for Every Budget BY DEE TRILLO Fashion, Beauty, Entertainment and LifeStyle (Travel & Tech) Expert| @HauteFrugalista| HauteFrugalista.com As the popular saying goes, the eyes are the window to the soul. But when we are trying to create a great smoky eye without looking like a racoon, we can find ourselves in a difficult spot. One of the main tricks is to find shades that are flattering to our eye color and skin tone, and position them in a way that make our eyes look bigger and more defined. Most palettes come with useful tips that teach you how to apply the colors to your best advantage, but they can be rather expensive for a newbie learning makeup looks, or not high-quality enough for a pro artist. I compiled my top palettes that have great pigments, beautiful hues for daytime or night, are visually pleasing, and will not break your travel budget at all!
Smashbox Full Exposure Palette: A sleek design houses a set of colors that go from neutral to bold in matte and shimmery hues. What’s best is that it comes with a double sided brush, mascara, and a full how-to guide that gives you tips so you can apply the colors according to your eye shape. $50 Smashbox.com
MAC Toledo Violetwinks Palette: Isabel and Ruben Toledo’s collaboration with MAC reflects their love for vibrant colors and fun paintings. The set has an array of pinks mixed with purples and deep violet, encased in a beautiful white box with red and black graphics. $44 MACCosmetics.com
