JOEY MCINTYRE HAS HAD A LIFE UNLIKE MOST PEOPLE YOU KNOW. THE PROUD BOSTONIAN HAS A NAME THAT HAS STRETCHED THREE GENERATIONS OF RECOGNITION AND A BAND SO FLIPPING FAMOUS THAT WE’LL PROBABLY NEVER STOP TALKING ABOUT. BUT WITH HIS LONG LINE OF STAGE WORK, SCREEN APPEARANCES AND POP HITS COMES A SIMPLE FAMILY MAN. LONG AFTER HIS SUCCESS AS “JOEY,” THE YOUNGEST MEMBER OF HIS MUSICAL GROUP NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK, MCINTYRE MARRIED HIS WIFE OF MORE THAN TEN YEARS, BARRETT WILLIAMS, IN 2003. THEY’D SOON WELCOME THREE TINY MCINTYRES TO THE GANG: GRIFFIN THOMAS IN 2007, RHYS EDWARD IN 2009, AND FINALLY, IN 2011, THEIR FIRST GIRL, KIRA KATHERINE MCINTYRE. AT 42, THE ‘80S HEARTTHROB DOESN’T FEEL HIS AGE, NOR DOES HE LOOK IT. I SAT DOWN AND CHATTED WITH THIS TRUE AMERICAN IDOL ABOUT WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE HIM, AND WHAT IT’S LIKE WHEN THE STAGE LIGHTS ARE OFF AND THE MICROPHONE IS WIPED CLEAN.

What does it feel like selling out shows years after your initial success? “It feels like we’ve taken several years off, is all. We love to do what we do. Our fans are all grown up now, and together, we all get to embrace the past with an open heart. I think the great thing is that we’re old enough to embrace it and take it in, but young enough to still feel like we’re rocking and rolling.” When you look back at your time in the ‘80s and the years that have followed since, what stands out? “You mean, the first time around? Oh, you know, we were kids...we were really kids. I look back at myself in my 20s and feel like I was kid. Back then, I was four years younger than the rest of the guys, which felt like a big difference, the way 15 and 19 is, or 16 and 20. But although I had a bit of a different experience, those guys were young too. We had a lot of bravado, you know, and a “the world’s wrong” attitude sometimes. Every time a critic said something we didn’t like, we felt like we had to defend it. That’s not always a fun place to come from. You never want to compete or compare and get up in the morning feeling like you need to prove people wrong, because that’s never going to happen.” 129

“This time around, we don’t have that experience, but that’s what you do when you’re a kid. I guess coming from Boston, a working class town, you have a chip on your shoulder and you’re just bred that way. We were bred that way. Part of that was part of our charm: we were regular city kids. It made us what we were.” Did you happen to catch the New Kids on the Block episode of The Goldbergs, by any chance? “I’m going to have to Google that. I knew it was coming, because they asked us permission to use posters and stuff like that, and I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. The guys in the group said it was hilarious and that it was quite the cool tribute. I just got Hulu on my phone, so soon as you and I are done chatting, I’m going to look it up.” You’re the youngest of nine children. What was it like for you growing up in a big Boston family? Was it anything like your sitcom, The McCarthys? “Not so much. As crazy as the McCarthys are (he laughs), would you believe that the McIntyres were even crazier? In a different way. Out of nine kids, I had seven older sisters, so there

were a lot of hormones flying around. By the time I came along, everyone was kind of tuckered out. I was the baby, so my mother was very big on taking care of me. People think, Wow, nine kids...you must’ve had to fight for food and for what you wanted. As you get older, you become that way, but I never experienced that as a child. I was the baby and never had to fight for what I wanted. Having a very big family was different than most cases, but at times it was definitely a lot. It influenced my life and my career choices. As you get older you try and detach from that a little bit; you take the good stuff and try your best to move on from the craziness.” When it comes to your children, are you going to introduce them to your music, or let them come to it on their own? “I’m going to force-feed it. I’m going to regurgitate and then place it back into their mouths (laughs). I’m kidding. I have a seven-year-old (Griffin Thomas), a five-year-old (Rhys Edward) and a three-year-old (Kira Katherine). My seven-year-old was on the road when he was ten months old, when the New Kids got back together. He’s been on the bus and the venues at a young age, and they just take that in. Over the years, we’ve been touring consistently March 2014 - BELLO

for the last seven years, so he’s been backstage and I’ve brought him on stage to say hi, so he’s experienced a handful of it. Part of me doesn’t want to force it because I don’t want to push my son, but I think he loves it. He loves hanging out backstage, and he has four uncles in the guys. I also think it’s just in his blood. My wife grew up dancing in New York and has always been around the arts, and I feel like he has that in him too. We don’t really listen to New Kids On The Block, ever really. The kids mostly introduce me to stuff, because they want to hear the new stuff, which in return keeps me more topical. The younger two are just jumping around having fun all day for now. But I think Griffin’s path is going to be his own. If he wants to be a performer, he’s going to have to fend for himself...even if that means living in a studio and waiting tables. And of course I’ll help him out, but what I’m excited about is that living in LA, he’s able to take classes from the best. Building discipline and learning the craft and what it’s really about— that’s invaluable.” Do you have boxes full of New Kids memorabilia in the corner of your garage? “Our fans do,” he laughs, “and it keeps coming out of the woodwork. Sometimes a fan pulls out a playing card from 1989 with my face on it, thinking I’ve never 131

seen it before, and I would play along, but by now they know I’m just being sarcastic. It’s all out there and we see it often. It’s fun; it’s part of the story. I wouldn’t say I’m numb to it, but I’m so far past the shock element. Initially it all happened so fast we couldn’t control it, and before we knew it our faces were on everything from marbles to slippers. But it’s fun for the fans, and it’s a small part of the crazy ride we’ve all been on.” Have you been handed a piece of memorabilia with your face on it that you didn’t know was out there? “I don’t know, I think I’ve seen it all. I’ve really seen it all. The marbles were pretty ridiculous and I’d be crazy to say it wasn’t a little trippy seeing my face rolling down the hall.” Talk to me about “Win a Date With Joey” and the cause behind it. “My mother passed away this past November from Alzheimer’s, which she had for about six years at the end of her life. It was obviously tough. The toughest part was the onset, knowing it’s coming, her getting more and more dramatic and paranoid and scared and frightened—just all the things you never thought your mother experienced. So, it was very hard. I will say, for us, there were some bittersweet moments, and we were able to have some tender

moments. But it’s a debilitating disease and it affects the whole family, just everybody. “The Alzheimer’s Association is one that I probably know better than others know. I think it’s a really well-run organization with a great spirit and energy. We’re starting to identify the problem and take funds to where it needs to be to find a cure. I’m being honored at this event called “A Night At Sardi’s” [on] March 18th. Laurie Burrow and her husband’s former television executive, Peter Grad, are Co-Dinner Chairs of “A Night at Sardi’s,” and they’ve run this event and for the last twenty-something years and raised millions of dollars. It’s a fun night in Hollywood, but the vibe of the night is very relaxed and loose, [and] all for a great cause that I’m now very well connected to. They’re really hitting the right notes to educate people about the disease. They’re honoring me with the Caregiver of the Year Award, which I try to gracefully accept. My mother lived in Boston and I in LA, so I wasn’t part of the day-to-day with my mother like my sisters were. But I understand why they’re giving me the award. Many of the New Kids fans and some of my dear friends have stepped out throughout the year and donated and have been prevalent in it all. I’m just glad that I’ve been able to be of some help, in any way.” March 2014 - BELLO

IT’S NOT DIFFICULT TO GUESS THAT A CERTAIN MOUSE HAS A LOT TO DO WITH THIS CITY BEING SUCH A DESTINATION FOR TRAVELERS, BUT THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO DO THERE THAN GOING TO DISNEY WORLD. Be adventurous and try the Gator bordered zip lines, spend a cool afternoon at the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Odditorium, plan a dinner date with a Medieval Time or Capone Show twist, or dance all night covered in fur at ICEBAR. But before you pencil in your fun filled itinerary, you must find the answer to the most important question of them all: where to stay? Here is where OMNI Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate comes in and sweeps you off your feet! The secluded, yet perfectly located, hotel is a go-to spot for golf connoisseurs and aficionados, couples looking for a luxurious intimate getaway, and families who want more choices than just taking selfies with princesses. From the moment you walk in you are greeted by the gorgeous landscape, far from the noise and buildings of the city, and surrounded by open space and nature. The greens of the golf fields are flawlessly placed by the sparkly blue pools, making it the ideal backdrop for a serene and exciting setting. The resort has all the recreational, leisure and fine dining amenities that can give you enough to indulgence in, without having to leave the grounds. 141

March 2014 - BELLO

As at any five star resort, the accommodations range from single rooms to adjacent rooms to suites. Start your journey by choosing a room overlooking the golf course and pools. Trust me, when you see those night lights showering the fields or the sunset setting over the blue water, you will not regret treating yourself to such a magnificent view. If you need more space or seek privacy, you can go for a villa that, unlike any othe place in Orlando, offers all the best amenities, plus additional upgrades like personal concierge and a grocery shopper who stocks your fridge for you! No need to run for baby formula - or chocolate strawberries - in the middle of the night. UP FOR PUTT & PLAY AT ANYTIME! Orlando might not be the first place that comes to mind when talking about swinging a good game, but it’s actually one of the leading places when it comes to world renowned golf courses, and the Greg Norman designed course at OMNI Orlando is nothing short of spectacular, and challenging. Players get the opportunity to experience a professional field bordered by natural DECADENT issue - BELLOmag.com

activities for everyone according to the purpose of their trip. However, even if you travel with little ones, you have an array of options so you can indulge in some alone moments too. The Mokara Spa should be your first stop; whether you are in dire need to recover some of the energies from the holidays, or to have a space in which to meditate sans noise, rest assured that you will find something to suit your needs here.

wetlands, woodlands and orange groves. It’s a spectacular and uplifting setting that is turned up by the sound of bagpipers on the tenth hole and its proximity to a full-service clubhouse. Mixing sports and leisure in a no-fuzz way is one of the advantages of the resort. The pools, surrounded by private cabanas, add a very intimate atmosphere to a family friendly location. Just because Orlando is the preferred place for parents looking to entertain kids, that does not mean that the thought of a romantic getaway is out of reach. The adult-only pool can be a place to reconnect and enjoy some grown-up time. The lazy river, powered up with fast tubes, slides and waterfalls, is the perfect spot to let the children have fun while the adults soak in the sun with a cocktail in their hands. To me, it can even be the ideal venue for a wedding or vow renewal. Imagine saying “I do” under a gorgeous orange sunset all dressed in emerald green!

Their spa has sauna, steam room, Zents rainforest showers and a hot tub. Its “menu” also offers a variety of options, and here are some of my faves. Begin with a hot stone massage, infused with naturally-derived essential oils, that will take away the stress and leave you feeling as light as a feather. Move on to a guava scrub/wrap combo, which will get rid of dead cells, detox your body, and bring back your natural glow. Now, on to the beauty portion: I hear a raspberry truffle mani/pedi calling your name! Let the sugar scrub and chocolate anti-aging mask turn back time and make you feel as if you were walking in the clouds. Then, get a quick refresh with a NuFACE facial lift (noninvasive, of course) to improve your skin tone and reduce wrinkles. Finish your “me-day” with a signature blowout so you can be ready for a night out or a dinner date.

DIN DIN LIKE THE PROS! As a foodie, I always look at the on-site restaurants before booking a place; I need to make sure that their menu would fit my daytime mood and night cravings, and OMNI Orlando did not disappoint. I recommend that your fare schedule be as follows. Welcome the morning by the pool with tropical infused bites at Croc’s, get a midday java boost at Morsels, and then an afternoon refreshing ice cream at Broadway Deli. Prepare to savor a selection of gourmet sushi accompanied by a sake bar at Zen. The Pan-Asian restaurant has a modern yet cozy ambience that becomes a must for couples wanting to rekindle the fire. My favorite was Trevi’s. The Italian eatery is every bit delicious as it is relaxed. Stop by, delight in a serene vibe, and just dig in. The fresh cold meats, croissants, fruits and smoked salmon will remind you why brunch is, hands down, the best meal of the day. Don’t stop there; go for a late lunch or casual dinner, and munch on brick oven pizzas or pastas that are prepared with condiments and herbs from their outdoor garden. Believe me that the top notch service and welcoming aromas will make you visit again. Visit OmniHotels.com to book your stay.

48 HOURS OF

Decadence Bello’s Hiko Mitsuzuka chronicles his time spent at Florida’s LaPlaya Beach and Golf Resort and discovers the perfect way to recharge and relax before jumping back into reality. MY PRE-HOLIDAY GETAWAY TO FLORIDA’S GULF COAST DIDN’T START QUITE AS EXPECTED. DUE TO A FLIGHT DELAY, I MISSED MY CONNECTING FLIGHT IN CHICAGO AND ENDED UP SPENDING FIVE HOURS IN O’HARE’S TERMINAL C CATCHING UP ON KATHY GRIFFIN’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY, INHALING A BREAKFAST CROISSANT AND HALF A BAG OF GARRETT’S POPCORN (THE CHEDDAR AND CARAMEL MIX, NATURALLY), AND SIPPING ON SOME JAMBA JUICE WHILE WATCHING AN EPISODE OF DOWNTON ABBEY ON MY LAPTOP. But onwards I went. And here’s what went down...

SATURDAY 5:30pm - I am greeted at Fort Myers International Airport by my own personal limo driver. He takes my luggage and guides me to the top level of a parking structure, where my ride awaits. During the 30-minute drive to Naples, I feel like a celebrity being whisked away to a luxurious secret rendezvous.

DECADENT issue - BELLOmag.com

6:15pm - We pull up to the LaPlaya Resort, and I make a beeline to the front desk to check in. 6:30pm - After collapsing onto my bed (to test its bounce and firmness, of course) and letting out a squeal of delight, I step outside onto my 10thfloor balcony to take in the Gulf Coast air. It’s a beautiful night. I then uncork the complimentary bottle of red left on my dresser, pour myself a glass, try some chocolate truffles (courtesy of NormanLoveConfections.com), wash

my face, and change into some clothes that don’t reek of airports. 7:15pm - Dinner at Baleen. I grab a table by the bar and order from the prix fixe menu: a mouthwatering mussels bouillabaisse to start, followed by some swordfish with crunchy carrots and rice with a tangy citrus sauce, and a red velvet cake roll for dessert. I notice a couple sitting a few feet away from me (the ambience is more than romantic; it’s what I’ve surmised to be “exotically intimate”). They seem to be

and am surrounded by retired couples, young lovebirds, families, and groups of friends, all seeking to make new memories. Everything looks different in the daylight. And I’m okay with dining solo; I’ve had plenty of practice. I also notice the handsome party of ten sitting out in the yard...a wedding party, perhaps? It looks as though they’re getting ready for a JCrew photo shoot: Oxford shirts, loafers with no socks, sundresses. They all appear to have won the genetic lottery. 10:05am - I grab a chair on the white sand and read a little more. One of the helpful “beach butlers” sprays some seagull (may of the birds have flocked to enjoying a quiet night to themselves. Thankfully, they’re not one of those sickeningly sweet pairs you tend to see in settings like this; they’re light on the PDA, which is nice and tasteful...maybe because they’re not in their 20s. I try to tell myself that I’m not feeling bitter whatsoever about being alone on this magical evening. 8:05pm - Since I missed my personal tour of the grounds due to my late arrival, I take myself out for a brief nighttime stroll to get the lay of the land (and to feel better about myself after inhaling that decadent cake). I walk along the pools and find myself enchanted by the lights that sparkle off the water. A Maroon 5 slow jam softly pours out of speakers hidden among some rocks. I pass several cabanas and climb up some stairs to a sign that indicates I have come across the Fitness Center. I make a silent promise to myself to return to this spot and burn some calories at some point this weekend. 9:00pm - I take advantage of the large bathtub in my room and allow my troubles to melt away. I never leave my room for the rest of the night.

SUNDAY 9:30am - I decide to try to the breakfast buffet downstairs and am seated on the outdoor patio. I am the only party of one 145

journey,” I enjoy a few minutes alone in my personal relaxation room and private balcony. 12:00pm - I head back to the room to do some more lounging on my sofa and learn more about the resort’s golfing facilities. Designed by internationally renowned golf course architect, Bob Cupp, the course features 18 holes of championship golf, allowing diehards to test their mettle on the par72 course, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and an impressive collection of manicured greens. I think to myself, my dad would never want to leave. 2:00pm - A late lunch at Tiki Bar consists of a tuna salad sandwich with beer-battered fries and a side of Entertainment Weeklys I’ve been neglecting to read. 3:00pm - Beach time. The sun peeks out, the temperature rises, and I almost forget that other parts of the country are suffering through massive snowstorms and deep freezes. I’d hate me too if I posted an obligatory selfie on Instagram while spread out and soaking up some rays. #heaven #wokeuplikethis 4:25pm - Most of the sunbathers have cleared out, and some clouds roll in. Things cool off, and there’s barely any humidity. I also notice that wedding the resort for some reason) repellant, a safe, non-toxic mist that smells more like a minty cream for athlete’s foot. My butler - I think his name is Brad, because he looks like a Brad apologizes for any inconvenience, and I tell him all is well. I have some time to kill before... 11:00am - ...my appointment at SpaTierre. Cassandra is my masseur, and she gives my shoulders and back a much-needed deep-tissue rubdown after a long and grueling week (and a 15hour travel day). I inhale the eucalyptic oils as my mind drifts off to a more heavenly place. This mind, body, and soul needs some rejuvenation. Once I come off my “sensory-stimulating DECADENT issue - BELLOmag.com

guests have gathered to take pictures on the beach lawn of the hotel. Tiki torches are lit. Something’s about to go down. 5:00pm - An epic sunset! Simply gorgeous, and it’s even more beautiful because of the winter solstice. From my balcony, I spy the wedding party taking photos before the sun is completely gone. “Picturesque” wouldn’t be enough to describe the scene. 7:00pm - My dinner order consists of a platter of oysters, a lump and King crab mix with avocado and tomato on a bed of plantain chips, and filet mignon. 7:32pm - I experience a foodgasm when I try the garlic mash topped with shredded short rib and blue cheese. “Good God,” I mutter to myself. 7:50pm - Dessert is an “orange smores cake.” It puts last night’s red velvet roll to shame.

MONDAY 8:45am - Because I’ve ingested enough calories to sustain a small, malnourished village, I haul my ass to the gym to work up a sweat on the ellipical machine. I find a father and son enjoying a workout on the other side of the room. I press play on my iPod and start pumping my legs. 9:55am - Before I leave, I want to take a souvenir with me. I pop into the hotel’s gift shop and try on a navy blue LaPlaya baseball cap. The woman at the register gives me a special discount, and I head out with my rolling luggage. 10:03am - A town car picks me up. My driver points out some shopping outlets on the way to the airport, but my mind is already bracing itself for the cold, gray reality that is about to hit me in a few hours. Cashew Pesto:

• 2 cups of packed baby spinach, chopped

• 2 cups of packed fresh basil leaves

• 1 tablespoon of olive oil

• 3 cloves of garlic, roasted

• 1 pound of ground chicken

• ¼ cup of cashews

• 1 pound of ground veal

• ½ cup of Parmigiano-Reggiano, grated

• ½ cup of ricotta cheese

• 2/3 cup of extra virgin olive oil

• ½ cup of breadcrumbs

• ¼ cup of filtered water

• ½ cup of milk

• Kosher salt

• ½ cup of Parmigiano-Reggiano, grated

• Freshly ground black pepper

• 1 tablespoon of garlic powder

• 1 pound of Bucatini, or your favorite pasta

• 1 tablespoon of onion powder

• Extra virgin olive oil

• 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar • 1 egg • 5-finger pinch of kosher salt • 5-finger pinch of freshly ground black pepper INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat oven to 400°F. In a large skillet, sauté the spinach with a tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes until wilted and tender. To make the meatballs, add all of the meatball ingredients into a large mixing bowl and, using your hands, gently mix until the ingredients are just combined. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and gently roll meatball mixture into 1.5-inch balls. If the mixture is too loose, add some more breadcrumbs. Bake the meatballs for 22-24 minutes, until cooked all the way through. Then switch the oven to broiler and broil on high for about 4-5 minutes until the meatballs are nice and browned on top. In the meantime, make the cashew pesto by blending all the ingredients in a blender until smooth. Cook the bucatini (pasta) al dente according to box instructions, reserving some pasta water. Gently toss the pasta with the cashew pesto and top with the meatballs. Drizzle with olive oil, serve and enjoy! DECADENT issue - BELLOmag.com

TASTE

The Little Black Bottle BY STEVEN CARVER

Black is a very elusive color. It’s associated with the mysterious, hidden and forbidden. When it comes to matters of style, elegance also comes into play: the little black dress, a men’s tuxedo or Le Smoking for women. Additionally, also in play is the fact that one color – or lack thereof – can make anything look more expensive and be sold at a higher price. Kilian Hennessy is more than well aware of this, and has both knelt and expanded upon them. Heir to a long line of cognac makers and grandson of the founder of the Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) Group, Hennessy discovered the world of perfumery while writing a

thesis during his time as a student at the Sorbonne. Inspired by his family’s traditions in the distillery business, he later trained with the greatest noses in perfumery and worked in prestigious perfume houses upon graduating. On his next step in this olfactory journey, Hennessy launched an eponymous brand in 2007 with a collection that was a reflection of his own personal

tastes, rather than those of others. Encapsulating the essence in a flacon that blends a classic shape with a twist, the elegant bottles are a balance of yin and yang - dark and transparent glass, shiny and matte textures – and each resides in locked black box, lined with satin and reclining on an angle, as if to present itself to its wearer. With most of Kilian’s fragrances redolent of the sugar in alcohol and the wood of cognac barrels, Hennessy’s collections often take trips to exotic locales. With L’Oeuvre Noire (i.e. Black Masterpiece), Arabian Nights, Asian Tales, In the Garden of Good and Evil and Addictive State of Mind, each recalls the intoxicating blends of spices that are specialties of the brand. In a spritz, the wearer is transported to the worlds of masculine transgressions and feminine wiles. After parlaying his talents into exclusive and bespoken perfumes and scented jewelry, Hennessy transition to designing a collection of clutches after witnessing his brand’s black lacquer boxes being used as evening bags. Crafted by artisans in Florence, they’re adorned with details such as silver and gold marquetry and Swarovski crystals, each offering luxury enthusiasts a new object of desire. Whether a bottle or a bag, Kilian offers a bit of mystery hidden amongst the confines of a package. That’s the power of the color black.

Express yourself. Your creative energy is trapped, and it’s causing you to turn to other unhealthy habits and thoughts about yourself. Do it for the sake of getting happy.

It’s time to make that peace offering. There’s a situation that you have yet to resolve, and now is the time. Be open to seeing the other person’s point of view to smooth out any rough feelings. The more compassion, the more love, which equals both of your needs being peacefully met.

You’re not sure how to handle a certain situation that has caused you pain and grief. Open up and see the other person’s point of view. By doing this, you open the door for innovative solutions to enter. It’s time to let go of your defenses.
