of Them All WORDS BY SCOTT YOUNGBAUER PHOTOS BY JOSH REED
PLAYING THE BITCH ON ABC’S ONCE UPON A TIME IS A HARD JOB, BUT THE LOVELY LANA PARRILLA IS MORE THAN UP TO IT. STEPPING INTO THE ROLE OF THE EVIL QUEEN, ALSO KNOWN AS REGINA, WHO PUTS A CURSE ON AN ALTERNATE FANTASY REALM, PARRILLA QUICKLY BECAME THE SCENE-STEALER OF THE SHOW WHEN DEBUTING BACK IN 2011. PARRILLA’S PERFORMANCE AS REGINA IS NOTHING SHORT OF BRILLIANT, AND ONE OF THE MORE COMPLEX CHARACTER STUDIES OF THE SERIES. THROUGHOUT ITS FOUR SEASONS, VIEWERS HAVE BEEN TAKEN ON REGINA’S JOURNEY TOWARD REDEMPTION WHEREIN SHE TRANSITIONS FROM A BITTER WOMAN FUELED BY REVENGE ON SNOW WHITE (PLAYED BY THE APPLE-CHEEKED GINNIFER GOODWIN) TO SOMEONE WHOM THE AUDIENCE CAN’T HELP BUT ROOT FOR TO FIND HAPPINESS.
A trend that began with Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked, which portrayed Oz’s green witch as the misunderstood heroine, recent pop culture television has tried to get underneath the skin of classic villains. While Snow White gets the prince at the end of her fairy tale, wasn’t it always the Evil Queen 129
who as a child you were always more fascinated by? Recently, Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent and Cate Blanchett’s Wicked Stepmother in Cinderella have been huge successes; both actresses crafted interesting character studies of seemly one-dimensional roles. Parrilla’s pitch-perfect Evil Queen no
doubt deserves a ranking right up there with both of those actresses who have tackled Disney’s villians. Parrilla has been steadily working in TV since the early 2000s with her breakthrough role on Spin City as a recurring cast member. Other notable April 2015 - BELLO

TV credits throughout the years have included Boomtown, 24, and Lost. Parrilla currently divides time between shooting the show in Vancouver and her home in Los Angeles. In reality, Parrilla is actually quite the polar opposite of the icy Regina. I caught her on break from filming the two-part finale of the current fourth season. She describes to me her first impression of the role: “When I first read the script I read her as a very sad and lonely woman who was obviously living with all this pain and hate, but we really didn’t know where it came from.” Through the course of season one the viewers were given more insight into how she became the Evil Queen persona whom we all grew up reading about. Telling me about the challenges of playing Regina, Parrilla says that “she’s constantly evolving, and constantly changing; we’re constantly chipping away and learning more about her. That’s not so much the challenge, but part of the fun of learning about her.” Along with Parrilla’s performance, a lot of the execution of the Evil Queen can be lent to OUAT’s lead costume designer, Eduardo Castro, the man responsible for all of the lavish styles adorning the actors. Decked out head to toe in fairy tale couture, the Evil Queen no doubt has all the makings of a fashion icon while wearing garments that look like they walked off a Paris runway. Gushing about Castro’s work, she says, “Oh my god, he’s incredible. What a vision! His 131
costumes...each and every one of them is so unique. There’s this modern twist [and] the colors have such flair. I love working with him. They are hard to breathe in at times, but they help shape the character a tremendous amount. I can at least feel it in the performance.” Season four has proved to be one of the most challenging for Regina, wherein she tries to fight for good while still being tempted by the dark side in the form of equally spectacular co-villains Ursula the Sea Witch (Merrin Dungey), Cruella De Vil (Victoria Smurfit) and Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten). Parrilla does nothing but rave about the three actresses, and shares a story of a memorable shooting day in which she and Bauer van Straten endured the icy cold British Columbia weather to shoot a scene that features Maleficent turning into a dragon. She says the end result of the beautiful but vigorous shooting day was “spectacular” to see come to life in the episode when it aired.
When I first read the script I read her as a very sad and lonely woman who was obviously living with all this pain and hate, but we really didn’t know where it came from.
The misunderstood Regina has come a long way since bursting through the chapel doors on Snow White’s wedding day, condemning everyone to the town of Storybrooke. Viewers are on the edge of their seats, waiting to see which direction her character will head. Will Regina find salvation? Or will she go back to her evil ways (which are arguably the more fun scenes to watch)? Either way, the charming Parrilla is having the time of her life, and taking the magical journey in stride. and friendly tone, making us feel closer to those stars who normally seem so far away. In this Haute Chat, however, the tables have turned and Giuliana is the one on the spot sharing her favorite styles and looks.

How would you describe your personal style? I think my style is simply chic. I’m not too frilly, I tend to do a little bit of menswear, and I like tailored looks. I never dress promiscuous. Whenever I show leg, I cover my arms, and viceversa. So I like to show a little bit of skin somewhere, but not everywhere. How has your fashion sense evolved along the success you’ve achieved in your professional career? I think that when I started out there ten years ago, I had the big long hair, I was hiding behind my hair, and I wore low rider jeans and short tops. I don’t regret any of it. When I look back at the pictures, it was what was in fashion, and all the girls were wearing, and it was my style at the time. But I look back and I laugh. You’ve had many different looks. You’re quite the chameleon! I’ve definitely had different looks throughout the years, and I like that. I think that’s what keeps things interesting. That is what I love about fashion, and hair and makeup: that is not forever. It’s not like plastic surgery; if you don’t like it, you can change it any
moment. That is why I dyed my hair blonde, then black, or went back to brown. Or cut it short, and then have it long. I think you should have fun with your look and fashion. What are some of your go-to statement pieces when it comes to jewelry and accessories? I like women to have a signature piece of jewelry. For me, I wear the 3 Cartier love bracelets together, and they have special meaning to me. It’s funny because now I do photo shoots and the people always say, “Don’t take the bracelet off because it’s part of who you are,” so I think [you should] have a piece that you can wear all the time that is a signature piece. So it has become part of your brand. Yeah, it definitely has. What have been your three favorite red carpet looks that you have worn? One of my favorite looks was at the Grammys a couple of years ago. I wore
157
an orange Alex Perry dress, which was stunning. I had my hair back - it was a halter cut - and it was really pretty. I loved that dress. I love Basil Soda. I wore one of their white gowns for the Oscars - it’s always the Oscars - and the detail on it was amazing. I think those were two great looks! Let me think of a third one… What about last year, the princess style gown? Yes, yes! Thank you so much for reminding me. I loved that dress. It was by Australian designer, Paolo Sebastian, and it was simply spectacular. It appeared on so many magazines... That dress actually was the #5 most googled Oscar dress of the night, behind like Kerry Washington and Jennifer Lawrence. It was all these A-list movie stars, and then, me! Well, you are considered one now! Haha no, no. It was very exciting because I was not nominated, but my dress was so loved by everyone. It was really cool. April 2015 - BELLO

I will admit it - I didn’t think I was ever the girl to be writing a fashion column. Growing up, I was always a few trends behind the other girls in my class and my sole style inspiration came out of a desire to date the skater boys. Although I didn’t dye my hair the crazy awesome colors of the “scene girls” I so badly wanted to be, I think I did wear bright colored skinny jeans every single day. It took my first foray into Hollywood, performing week after week as part of a girl pop group on X Factor, that fashion piqued my interest. The other girls in my group on the show took it upon themselves to dress me which, at first, I was offended by, but eventually I grew to appreciate it. For the first time, I was really exposed to high fashion brands and I realized that I should probably attempt to be as fashionable as possible. And then, I didn’t stop. I put those skinnies aside and adopted harem pants, edgy oversized sweaters, battered tees and combat boots. LUXE issue - BELLOmag.com

When I moved out to Los Angeles about two years ago, I started recognizing the trends young women were wearing like “hipster” and “bohemian” looks. I immediately fell in love with it all and became Free People obsessed. Even though I gravitate towards the comfy, laid back look, I still LOVE using bright pops of color in my outfits. For my every day look I usually wear a lose fitting shirt, skinny blue jeans and a cute pair of booties with a ton of jewelry.
DRESS ASILIO
My red carpet looks tend to be more statement driven. Though I’ve never been very brand conscious, I want to make sure that each time I step foot at an event, it’s as bold as it is classic. Jewel tones compliment my fair skin; deep blues and bright reds are my absolute favorites. But a red carpet dress has to be somehow unique for me; maybe it’s with a contrasting color, or unique cut, or some inventive way to pull attention my way. I avoid overtly sexy but find that a perfect deep v-neck perfectly marries my 21 year old self with my 17 year old TV character, Erica. Becuase first and foremost, I have to be me. I genuinely believe in wearing things that reflect who you are as a person. I feel I have to stay within my morals, have fun with new trends, and ALWAYS be comfortable. But when you are yourself, there’s no other way to be, whether a fabulous cocktail dress or those brightly colored skinny jeans.

ENTERTAINMENT
Songs For The Wedding Season BY BRAD LIBERTI IT’S HARD TO PINPOINT WHAT IT IS EXACTLY THAT MAKES A POPULAR LOVE SONG WORTHY OF BEING CALLED THE PERFECT WEDDING ANTHEM. SURE, VULNERABILITY AND SINCERITY ARE CRUCIAL-- AS ARE POSITIVITY AND DEVOTION. THE SONG MUST BE UNAPOLOGETICALLY EARNEST YET STILL UNABASHEDLY CROWD-PLEASING. IT HAS TO TUG AT THE HEARTSTRINGS EVEN AS IT LAYS ON THE SCHMALTZ. SIMPLY SAID, IT HAS TO HIT YOU RIGHT WEAR IT HURTS… NOT EXACTLY AN EASY FEAT TO ACCOMPLISH. Which is why we here at BELLO are proud to present a decade-by-decade list of our own favorites just in time for the 2015 Wedding Season. We’re completely aware of how heated this debate may become, but just like a bride preparing for her big day, we have an opinion and we’re going to voice it! The ‘50s – Sam Cooke “You Send Me” Nobody sung about love like Sam Cooke. From meet cute, to lust, to the full-blown thing, he understood what it means to give your heart away completely. Even better however, he had the talent to convey it. The ‘60s - Elvis “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” From the very first lines of this slow-burn classic-- recorded by the King for his 1961 film, Blue Hawaii, the sentiment is clear. Timeless yet simple and above all else, woozily romantic, it remains just as popular to this day as it was over 50 years ago. Heck, even UB40’s cheese-tastic Reggae version couldn’t dim its lovesick charm. The ‘70s – Elton John “Your Song” Baz Luhrmann built an entire movie around the honest emotion expressed in this stripped down classic. A perfect example of Sir Elton and master lyricist, Bernie Taupin, working at their absolute best, it’s pure 70’s singer/ songwriter ecstasy.
The ‘90s – Shania Twain “You’re Still the One” Sure the most successful love song of the decade would be Whitney’s chart topper, “I Will Always Love You” or Celine’s volcanic weeper “My Heart Will Go On”, but let’s be honest, both ballads are kinda depressing. In terms of pure joy meets hey babe, looks like we made it (and isn’t sung by Barry Manilow) it’s this jam from the one time queen of country that even after all that airplay, still somehow feels like a warm breeze on a hot day. The ‘00s - Alicia Keys “No One” Anyone who’s ever been in it will tell you, marriage is really freaking hard. The only way you stand a chance at making happily ever after is by not letting anyone or anything tear you asunder. Clearly Ms. Keys is ride or die. The 10’s (so far) – Ed Sheeran “Thinking Out Loud” Not even 1-year-old and already destined to be played on the grounds of high end country clubs and the dancefloors of hotel banquet halls for years to come.
The ‘80s - Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross “Endless Love” When it came to professing his love on wax, nobody could touch Lionel Ritchie in the 1980’s. Seriously, he even turned existential yearning into top 40 gold with Hello! But paired with diva extraordinaire, Dianna Ross, for this soaring ballad, his talents were unstoppable. Needless to say it was futile for the general public to resist. 177

This is a great month for you to spend your time, energy, and money on getting your home to feel more like home. If you’re on a tight budget, rearrange the furniture, buy some new plants, and turn to yard sales to find new treasures.
It’s so easy to get distracted and focus on the things we don’t have, especially when your bank account doesn’t agree with your spending habits. You’ve been a little too worried about money lately. Put good energy into the universe by counting your blessings, giving thanks for what you do have, do what you can, and leave the rest to the universe.
It’s a great time for you to go on a nice vacation, even if it’s a short drive up the coast or a drive through the country. Take a breather from everyday life. You may be in the process of leaving something that no longer serves you. Trust that this is all happening for a reason; the universe has your back.

Too often you turn to control to get what you want. Although it is fun to be in charge, it’s time to release the leash you have on life, and possibly those closest to you. It’d be wise to tame the Ego like one tames an animal.
Things are going to get a lot smoother for you very soon. If you’re looking for work, you are about to find something bigger and better than you’ve ever imagined. You’re more prepared and balanced than you realize.
You are powerfully drawn to something or someone in your life right now. It’s been troublesome, wonderful, challenging and irrational. No matter how scary it can be at times, it is love. You have a choice to either go for it or let it go. If you’re having trouble deciding, follow your heart

Allow yourself to feel what you need to feel, cry if you feel like crying, and say what you need to say. Don’t dwell for too long. Pick yourself back up and move forward.
