Undateable WORDS BY DIO ANTHONY PHOTOS BY JOSH REED
22-YEAR-OLD BRIDGIT MENDLER IS SHEDDING HER DISNEY SKIN AND GRABBING A TOWEL AT THE BLACK EYES BAR AS ITS NEW AND VERY UNDATEABLE BARTENDER, CANDACE. WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE ACTRESS/SINGER/SONGWRITER ON HER NEW ADULT ROLE, THE DIGITAL AGE, AND AMERICA’S GROWING OBSESSION WITH THE BACHELOR.
You did four years on Good Look Charlie. What has been the biggest difference on your new job at NBC? It has definitely been different working with comedians, but encouraging for improv. We do a lot of improvisation on the show, so the approach to comedy is also new. I enjoyed working on Good Luck Charlie, and now I’ve come into this new series, and it’s like a new world of comedy. Tell me about the music video you did with the Undateable cast; was that something that came about after producers on the show learned of your musical background? I think they were familiar with my background in music, yes. But also, my co-star on the show, Brent Morin, and I did a little bit of singing in an episode, and it went well and it was fun. I think they thought it’d be fun to elaborate on that and make a video, 53
something fun and extra that people would be able to find online on the show.
You posted a photo while watching an episode of The Bachelor this past season. What do you think of next season’s Bachelorette twist?
You have a really huge social media following on all platforms. Do you find yourself having to be extra cautious of what you put out there because of that at all?
Oh my gosh. I wouldn’t want to be on that season, first of all, because I’d be insecure. Maybe he doesn’t like me? Maybe he likes her? But I think it could also be more settling because they’re not just choosing you because of the being on TV factor. Yes, they’ve chosen you to be on television, but they’ve chosen to date you over these other women.
I probably do feel more self aware on what certain things I comment on online, but I think for the most part I share things about my life, whether that’s a photo of my food or an animal. I’m well aware those things are necessarily fun, but I guess that’s how I do social media; it’s not something I use to rant about things. I’m not really inhibited to post different things about my social life, because there isn’t much to hide there. I think it all comes down to me being not that wild of a person, so it doesn’t leave much to shelter.
What do you think is an “undateable” person, per se? I think [that’s] someone who isn’t interested in getting to know other people. Some people just aren’t very intrigued by others and don’t have a curiosity for life, and I think that’s important. Undateable, Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC April 2015 - BELLO

1. HBO Sunday Night Premiers They say Christmas comes but once a year…unless of course you’re a pop culture addict whose fix includes royal blood-feuds, comically inept political leaders, and dorky tech talk. The season’s about to get a whole lot merrier, then, with new episodes of Game of Thrones, Veep, and Silicon Valley, all beginning April 12th!
2. Ex Machina As technology continues to devour more and more of our lives, we can’t help but ponder the long-term ramifications. Few do that better than 28 Days Later scribe, Alex Garland, who enlists powerhouse trio Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, and Alicia Vikander in a star-making performance to create one of the most mesmerizing and utterly unforgettable directorial debuts of this year or any.
3. Furious 7 When news broke of the tragic death of Paul Walker in 2013, fans wondered how their beloved series could possibly survive such a devastating loss, but after coming off of its most successful and entertaining chapter yet (2013’s Justin Lin-directed Fast & Furious 6), the Teflon franchise - now almost 14 years old and more popular than ever - has proven once again that it’s unstoppable.
4. “Somebody” – Natalie La Rose featuring Jeremih Sure, it’s almost impossible to match the giddy ‘80s enthusiasm of Whitney Houston’s classic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” but aided by hit-maker du jour, Jeremih, La Rose – an LA native with powerful pipes and swagger for days - comes pretty darn close. Now, at the end of the night when the lights turn out will we turn down? Hell no!
5. “Elastic Heart” - Sia featuring The Weeknd & Diplo The most deliciously wacky voice to hit pop music since Bjork recruits two more far out chart-toppers to send an already soaring tune high up into the stratosphere.
