Letter from the Editor We live in a “global village,” and we get reminded about it every single day through social media...and all media, for that matter. We also live in a digital world, and this magazine is proof of that (BELLO mag is 100% digital, reaches so many through a variety of digital and media avenues, and no trees are killed to produce or distribute the publication). While I am writing this letter, I cannot help but think about all the people in Nepal, and we urge you to support those who are helping them in any way that you can, whether with donations or some investment of your time. It is important not to forget that we are all together in this global network, and being kind to one another is the only way we should live our lives. On the cover of our Global issuse is an actor of global appeal, Chad Michael Murray. It is true that he has grown up from his days on One Tree Hill and is now all over TV with Agent Carter and the History Channel mini-series Texas Rising, coming out this month. Yet we couldn’t stop there; in this issue, we take you through the lives and careers of other global stars like Carla Gugino, Ivy Levan, Louise Roe, Olivia Holt, Dani Thorne and Shelley Hennig. SWEATER Yet while reading this issue and learning about the rising stars of Hollywood, please do not forget about the KENT & impact we bring to all those around us, and let’s all try and make sure that it is always positive, whether CURWEN locally or globally. Remember that when we Snapchat, Periscope, Instagram or Facebook, we are all PANTS REISS LONDON influencing the world in whatever small or large level, so let’s bring a positive change while we are at WATCH it. INTRO So many familiar faces grace each cover of this beautiful issue. Our main cover boy has been melting hearts around the world for the past decade and a half. Shot in the Hollywood Hills by Bello fave photographer Amanda Elkins, Chad Michael Murray proves that he still, without a doubt, has what it takes to stay on top. From the highly anticipated new horror click-flick, lead Shelley Hennig gives us serious gorgeousness representing the Beauty section in a cover editorial shot by Josh Reed in Playa Del Rey. On our Entertainment cover, we are so lucky to have one of my favorite A-List actresses, Carla Gugino, talk about her newest epic film, San Andreas, in which she co-stars with Duane “The Rock” Johnson, as well as her hot new

Her beauty was captured in this shoot by our very own Aleksandar Tomovic and styled by Kayla Farhang and Bory Tan from The Style List studio in Hollywood, CA. CHAD MICHAEL MURRAY HAS COME A LONG WAY SINCE HIS ONE TREE HILL DAYS, SO IT WAS A PLEASURE TO SPEAK WITH HIM ABOUT THE EXCITING SERIES HE’S CURRENTLY CAST IN, AS WELL AS HIS UPCOMING PROJECTS AND ENDEAVORS.
little trying as an actor because you can’t really go off the beaten path. He always does do the right thing, whereas you never know what to expect with Jack; he could surprise you at any given moment, and I love that. I love that aspect of having a character that has a dark side to him, has a drive, an ambition that will not always make him do the right thing to get to the top.
From teen heartthrob Lucas Scott to the flawed yet loveable Jacob Orr, and now controversial war veteran Jack Thompson, Chad Michael Murray has been fortunate enough to play a versatile set of characters. He certainly doesn’t take any of it for granted. “I’m really proud of the work, I’m just looking forward to the next piece. Everything has been such a blessing”.
an unwilling assassin in order to protect his family. Murray revealed that these were undoubtedly the most challenging shoots he has ever done. “We shot each season in twenty days, so you’re talking about living every aspect of the human condition each day. And by the time you got home you thought, ‘Man, I did my work. I’m exhausted. I’m going to bed.’”
Lucas Scott was the leading protagonist and moral compass of One Tree Hill for so many years, and it seems as if that character will always resonate with Murray. “For me, I spent six years in his shoes, so I felt like I really got to live his life for that period of time. Everyone tells me, even to this day, how much that character meant to them, the impact that he made, and I’m incredibly flattered. I felt very happy with the result.” Although Murray admitted it was tough to leave the beloved Lucas behind, One Tree Hill fans will be pleased to know he still keeps in contact with his former on-screen love interest Peyton Sawyer, played by the talented Hilarie Burton.
The Marvel family are just the best people to work with; they really embrace everyone that works for them and the environment is incredible.
His next big project was Chosen, where he currently plays Jacob Orr, an innocent man whose morality is tested on a daily basis as he is slowly transformed into 9
Murray’s stellar character portrayals led to him being cast as Jack Thompson in the critically acclaimed show Agent Carter and, as always, he had nothing but praise for his co-stars and the show’s creators. “The Marvel family are just the best people to work with; they really embrace everyone that works for them and the environment is incredible.” Although Murray will always hold Lucas close to his heart, he admitted playing the controversial role of Jack Thompson was a welcome break. “Lucas was the moral compass of the show, and at times it can get a
Everything he’s doing is for the greater good, and that’s what I do love about Jack. His center is right...he just has a funny way of getting there.” To further demonstrate his dedication to acting and his inhuman work ethic, Murray is also due to star this May in Texas Rising, the upcoming mini-series wherein he plays legendary Texas politician Mirabeau Lamar. Murray was humbled to play the iconic soldier and diplomat. “He was one of the most fascinating people, I think, in Texas history. In 46 days, he was in charge of May 2015 - BELLO

I feel incredibly blessed. I feel very good about my private scene; I’m going to do everything I can to protect my family and go from there. his own group of men. I mean, that’s unbelievable. He was terrific and so intelligent.” Despite being a megastar on the big screen, Murray also indulges in watching the odd TV show every now and then. The Big Bang Theory is one of his favorites, and he even admitted he would love to appear on. “I would [be on the show] in a heartbeat, I absolutely would. I mean, I think everyone wants their own Sheldon to hang out with.” Asked specifically what he’d like his storyline to be, Murray had an exact and thought-out response. I hope Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady are all ears… “All the guys are at the bar, Leonard and his group, and they see some guy who they think is cool and they’re like ‘Okay, lets befriend him.’ Then they think, ‘Oh my god, we’re hanging out with the cool guy who can get us girls and improve our social status.’ However, in reality, he’s a bigger nerd than all of them put together.” I think that’s a collaboration everyone would want to see! Murray’s acting ambitions, however, go beyond The Big Bang Theory. He has a host of actors and actresses he hopes 11
to work with one day. “The list goes on and on. I’d love the opportunity to work with Brad Pitt. I love his command of the screen. The Al Pacinos, the Sean Penns and the Daniel Day Lewises of the world...those are the men I grew up watching, who inspired me to become an actor, to become an artist, and I’d love to work with all of them. I also love Hugh Jackman. The guy is a man’s man; I really enjoy the energy that he brings to everything. Those are a lot of the guys I’d love to work with and, of course, the list of women goes on and on as well. The Julia Roberts, the Meryl Streeps, the Angelina Jolies...I’d love to work with Anne Hathaway. She always knocks it out of the park; she’s so focused, [and] you can really feel whatever pain or trauma her character is going through.” Despite being part of some of the biggest series and shows to date, Murray is characteristically modest and revealed he is beyond happy with the way his private and public life have played out. “You know, I’m really good at staying under the radar these days. My wife and I, we don’t go to the quote unquote ‘cool’ places. We have our own life, we have our dogs, we have our lifestyle that we truly enjoy, and we’ve got a cabin if
we want to get away and go camping. I spend a lot of time outdoors, so I think that I’m getting the best of both worlds. I feel incredibly blessed. I feel very good about my private scene; I’m going to do everything I can to protect my family and go from there.” Despite Murray’s huge success thus far, it certainly hasn’t gone to his head. His down-to-earth nature and humble persona are a winning combination. With his family expanding, Murray is enthusiastic about the next phase in his life. “We couldn’t be more excited; it’s the greatest thing in the whole world. I’m going to sit back and enjoy this new chapter.” Murray is a strong force to be reckoned with and a real inspiration, so it seems fitting to live by his philosophy: “Get up in the morning and dream big. Go for it. I don’t think there’s anything that you cannot have, that you cannot accomplish if you actually believe and you actually do it. If you’re kind and giving and loving towards others, you find that it comes back two-fold.” I always knew Chad was a fine actor, and after speaking with him, it turns out he’s also a really decent chap. If you’re a diehard Stanley Kubrick fan like me then you’ll love Cameron Beyl’s impressive collection of video essays on the films of Stanley Kubrick. The series is broken up into a well articulated set of five parts: a) the early independent features, b) the Kirk Douglas years, c) the Peter Sellers comedies, d) the Master Works (i.e. 2001, The Shining, Clockwork Orange), and e) the final features. You can watch them all at www.DirectorsSeries.Tumblr.com and click on Index to find Kubrick’s category, among several other directors as well.
I can’t seem to get enough of Yumi Zouma these days. I first fell in love with the New Zealand band (now based in Paris and New York) when I discovered their sun-kissed “Song For Zoe & Gwen” a few months ago. Now, their brand new EP entitled II is all yours. You can get lost in their bliss by visiting www.YumiZouma.com.
During a recent trip to New York, some friends invited me to a live performance art show called Fuerza Bruta. I originally balked at the thought of spending $100 on the ticket, but it was the smartest thing I did on the whole trip. If you are lucky enough to be in New York, you absolutely NEED to see this show; it is an experience I will never forget! Get your tickets at www.FuerzaBruta.net.

Nestled near the bottom of the sacred El Tepozteco Mountain in Tepoztlán, Mexico is the mindblowing house known as Casa Meztitla. Designed by the firm EDAA, the holiday residence is a 100% sustainable design, and blends into its natural surroundings so elegantly it’s as if it’s been there forever. You can see more jaw-dropping photos by visiting www.KUU.vision and clicking on the seventh box down in the third column (i.e. the photo with two people looking into a concrete ring in the ground).
Randall Peacock is one of the top set designers in America, and one glance at the New York-based artist’s portfolio will explain why. Peacock’s designs can be seen in Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors,” the Tommy Hilfiger runway shows, and the photography of Mario Testino, Steven Klein, and many others. You can see his entire body of work by visiting www.RandallPeacock.com.
Czechoslovakia-born painter Jiří Georg Dokoupil (born 1954) is one of the most compelling painters in contemporary art today. One of the original founders of the German artist groups Mülheimer Freiheit and Junge Wilde, Dokoupil is making waves with his stunning series of “bubble paintings,” and you can learn why by reading his interview with FRAME magazine at www.FRAMEweb.com/ news/jiri-dokoupil-interview.
Artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset are following up their 2013 Victoria & Albert exhibit TOMORROW with their brand new installation entitled PAST TOMORROW. The concept of the installation is in keeping with their narrative-based exploration of atmospheric and emotionally-charged furnished interiors. This time, a golden vulture overlooks an evocative bedroom setting. PAST TOMORROW is on display at New York’s Galerie Perrotin until May 23rd, and you can learn more by visiting www.Perrotin.com.
Designer Ali Alava is taking seating to a whole new level with his futuristic Serenad chair. Inspired by the form of a sleeping swan, the design mimics a swan sleeping with its head between its wings as it floats on water. Adding to its allure is the chair’s high polish chrome finish, which reflects its surroundings. You can learn more by visiting www.Alaviali.com. 21

The spirit of this thought stayed with me recently as I embarked on a weekend adventure in New York after more than five years of being away. Although Manhattan has always been close to my heart (I once lived there for a blissful summer in 1999), for some strange reason the gaps between my return visits had become increasingly large in recent years. So when my friends offered me a ride down in early April I simply couldn’t resist. Set on making it a trip to remember, I decided to treat myself to a hotel that might help elevate my two-day stay to a higher level. It wasn’t long before my intrigue brought me to the perfect choice: the Library Hotel, nestled in the shadow of the New York Public Library on 41st and Madison. GLOBAL issue - BELLOmag.com

which is framed from behind by a huge wall filled with an oak grid of library index card boxes. Suddenly I found myself flooded with memories from the 7th and 8th grades, where I had spent many a lunch hour volunteering in the school library. I was a certified master of the Dewey Decimal System back then, so to be faced with my old oak friend once again had me waxing nostalgic from the second I arrived. Working my way up to the 10th floor, the elevator doors opened to reveal a glowing plaque on the wall: “Tenth Floor: General Knowledge.” Moments later when I reached my room, 1002, I was met by another plaque reading: “1000.002 Almanacs.” Very clever. Yes, each room has its own theme correlating to the Dewey Decimal System. And the fact that the universe hooked me up with the Almanacs room was a perfect fit for a small town kid like me who grew up surrounded by farmers and a lifetime of stories about the weather. Home sweet home indeed.
Upon arrival, I found myself outside peeking through the window of the hotel’s gorgeous little corner restaurant, fittingly named Madison & Vine. Soon enough I was greeted by the sweetest doorman in the world (with a smile to die for) and the front desk,

Once I settled in I decided to head on down to the 2nd floor and take advantage of the free wine and cheese room. lying if I said I wasn’t jealous. Yes, I could definitely see myself living here again. There is a magic in the New York air that is unlike anything else on Earth. I was reminded of many things during my Manhattan weekend. I re-learned the reasons why I will be coming back to New York much more often now, I relearned the importance of escape, and most importantly, I was reminded of what it is that makes travel so essential. The power and beauty of occasional getaways is found most abundantly in how they effortlessly force us to be lost in the present moment. Suddenly the future disappears, and we find ourselves swooped up in a fairy tale. And just like a good book, these adventures later grow into memories that make up the stories of our lives. Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut
This coming September, the geniuses at London-based immersive theatre company Punchdrunk (the wizards behind the iconic Sleep No More show, an interactive interpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth with an atmosphere not unlike Eyes Wide Shut) are launching Punchdrunk Travel, and if you loved The Game, then this is
definitely your kind of fantasy-based travel company. Company founder Felix Barrett and his team are keeping all the details top secret for now, but when Punchdrunk Travel arrives in September 2015 it will play out something like this: 1) you and your friends buy your tickets, 2) you and your friends arrive at the airport, and 3) you
and your friends relinquish all control and let the Punchdrunk team become the puppeteers of your new mysteryfueled life. “The idea is that your life becomes a theatrical wonderland,” Barrett tells Fast Company.” Everything is centered around you, whether you’re in the streets or sitting in a cafe or whatever you’re doing; you’re lost

AN MTV SERIES IS THE TYPE OF GIG THAT MOST YOUNG ACTORS WOULD KILL FOR, AND SHELLEY HENNIG KNOWS IT. SINCE JOINING THE SUPERNATURAL SERIES TEEN WOLF IN 2014, HENNIG HAS QUICKLY BECOME A STAPLE OF THE ENSEMBLE AS THE RESIDENT WERECOYOTE OF THE SHOW ALONGSIDE HER CO-STARS TYLER POSEY AND DYLAN O’BRIEN.
“I got to do my own stunts the other night, which was pretty bad ass,” she tells me while on break from shooting the fifth season. “I laugh the entire time. It’s such a great show with a lot of action, humor, and scary shit.” She laughs. “It’s the best of both worlds. I’m really lucky they accepted me into the Teen Wolf family.” On her character of Malia, she tells me, “I love how honest she is. It’s nice to be playing such a strong female role that’s also comedic.” In a show in which guest starring actors clamor to get a recurring spot, Hennig quickly earned her way to be billed as a regular cast member. A Louisiana country girl at heart who was crowned Miss Teen USA in 2004, Hennig has been acting in Hollywood since she got a breakout role on Days of Our Lives in 2007. Her 465-episode stint led her to nab two Daytime Emmy nominations. She’s currently navigating the horror genre with last year’s Ouija and this spring’s Unfriended. “The whole filming process was really unique, and it’s so cool to be a part of 31
something the first of its kind,” she says of Unfriended’s twist on the foundfootage genre. The movie revolves around a group of friends chatting on Skype, where they find themselves haunted by a supernatural force using the account of their dead friend. Director Levan Gabriadze staged Hennig and her off camera scene partners in separates rooms and filmed the actors in a series of long takes. The film has garnered good word-of-mouth and looks to be another sleeper hit from Blumhouse Productions, the powerhouse behind Paranormal Activity and The Conjuring. The easygoing actress fills me in on all her favorite things pop culture. She’s currently addicted to Transparent, House of Cards, and Bob’s Burgers. Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis had turned Hennig on to Bob’s Burgers, which she watches to unwind after a long day on set. Hennig is also a huge fan of country music and tells me she’s a self-proclaimed groupie of The Band Perry (she recently joined them at the Grammys earlier this year, where they won Best Country/Group Performance).
“Masculine with a dash of femininity” is Hennig’s reply when I ask her about what her red carpet style consists of. She recently started working with a stylist, which has edged her into more fun red carpet looks that capture a masculine touch with a good sense of comfort. “I think action is an area I could excel in.” Other kinds of roles she’d like to be doing? “A good romcom to off-set these horror films I’ve been doing.” Two independent films are on the 2015 radar for Ms. Henning: the coming-ofage film Still Life and Scout, in which she stars alongside Ellen Burstyn. In the meantime, it looks like Unfriended just might be the role that takes her career to the next level. After all, one can’t take his eyes off her performance. The final, nailbiting ten minutes of the movie demonstrate what the actress is capable of. With a balance of vulnerability and strength, Hennig has all the makings to be the next big star.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? My uncle was a horse breeder; at a very young age, I developed a passion for them, and when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said I would be a jockey. Everyone’s response was, “that is not a job for a girl,” but I was resilient and my passion just grew with time. I dropped out of school at 14 and my mom had arranged for me to work at a local convenience store. I was terrified at the news, so I escaped and went straight to Paris to register in the Jockey school of “Moulin a Vent a Chantilly.” It was a five-hour ride on the train and I had no ticket and no money. When I got there, they didn’t accept girls - only boys - and asked where my parents were. After much debate and pleading with the director of the school and my infuriated parents, who had just found out where I was, they agreed 39
to give me a room in the attic so that I could stay. I heard the director on the phone say to my parents, “don’t worry, she will not be able to handle it; she will be back home before the end of the week.” I stayed two years and was one of the first females to graduate from the school. Now they have more than 150 girls graduate each year. This was by far the best life training anyone can receive at age 14. It’s a no-excuses approach, where impeccability, precision and perfection, along with accountability, hard work and courage, are required every minute of the day. Describe what cosmetics” are.
“semi-permanent
Semi-permanent makeup is a softer form of permanent makeup or cosmetic tattooing.
The difference is in the
technique and the depth of application. But it’s important to note that there is a degree of permanency in “semipermanent.” What makes it “semi-permanent,” and how long does it last? Many factors: the expertise of the technician, the skin texture, undertone, the quality of the pigments and an extensive knowledge of color chemistry...all will contribute to how a procedure will fade over time.
Back in the late ‘80s I had my lips tattooed and the results were so unnatural, I immediately found someone to help me remove it. May 2015 - BELLO
Every time I perform a procedure, I leave a print of myself in the memory of others. I must make sure that this memory will be a good one. When did you start doing semipermanent cosmetics and how did you choose it as a career? Back in the late ‘80s I had my lips tattooed and the results were so unnatural, I immediately found someone to help me remove it. She was a renowned dermatologist reputed for her permanent makeup work. During one of the many sessions to fix the shape and color of my lips, she recognized my attention and precision for the smallest details and she said, “You would be really good at this. You see everything.” I really liked the idea and accepted a two-year apprenticeship. During my training I experienced many frustrations with the limitations set by my teacher, because it was not aligned with my vision. I loved the concept, but hated when the results looked

unnatural. Often it looked too obvious and overdrawn, and it wasn’t enhancing the real essence of a woman’s beauty. There were only two solutions: find a way to express my own vision of softer, undetectable permanent makeup, or quit. I am not the quitting type, so this became my mission! Anytime I had the opportunity to express my vision on my own, I did. There was not a dull moment. Needless to say that after a short while, like an epidemic wave, every housekeeper in my Parisian neighborhood all proudly walked around displaying perfect brows, lips and liner; I was able to perfect my craft with them. When I was not creating, I was dissecting colors, dismounting my device or hiding in the basement of my house to practice on pigskin. I did it all, researched it all and one day, I finally found the answers regarding every
aspect of the procedure and was able to take into consideration the smallest details, enabling me to create very natural results. How does scar camouflage differ from the cosmetic enhancements of the eyes and lips? Although I use the same device, the technique and approach are completely different; the numerous color blends are complex and need to be precisely and carefully customized for each individual skin tone. This knowledge goes beyond plastering flesh color into the scar, which unavoidably will end up turning orange as time passes. What is the most important factor of your discovery? Understanding that what works on one type of skin will be a disaster on someone else’s. It’s essential to customize for each individual client. What part of your job do you enjoy the most?
40
The best part always is the moment when the client discovers her new beautiful self! Giving back years of youth or being able to give back a cancer or burn survivor something they had lost...to see them so happy with new found confidence never gets old! I also love that it never feels like work. I love the travel between Paris, New York and Los Angeles to see my clients. What inspires you in your work? Most definitely the instant connection with my clients. Permanent cosmetics has something very spiritual to it. It has the potential to impact someone’s life emotionally and physically, whether it applies to cosmetic or corrective purposes. Every time I perform a procedure, I leave a print of myself in the memory of others. I must make sure that this memory will be a good one. As if it was the work of an artist on a live canvas, there is no place for the slightest mistake. If I didn’t do permanent makeup, I would be an art restorer. What is the most common request from your clients? First time clients’ most popular demands are eyebrows, scars and stretchmark camouflage. Once they’ve experienced the freedom and the benefits of looking younger, the compliments from people who notice they look better yet don’t know why, they will most often keep adding with the lips and the liner as they experience the rejuvenating effect! They often confess, “It’s addicting!” Do you have a favorite moment in your career thus far? They are many; it’s hard to pick just one. When it comes to meeting and assisting burn survivors or breast cancer patients on their journey to recovering their self-image, I hold each memory in my heart as the most inspiring one. Each survival story is an inspirational example. I am always moved by their courage. In 41
I believe beauty is innate and only needs to be enhanced, not disguised. Once this goal is achieved, the face naturally takes on the look of youth. my eyes, they are not just survivors, they are heroes. But if I had to pick, it would be with my youngest client, an 8-year-old girl, burn survivor. Anna is from a rural area in New Zealand. She had burned the whole right side of her face accidentally spilling boiling play dough from the microwave over her face. Seeing this little girl filled with so much joy after her restoration was one of the most overwhelming and heart felt experiences I have ever had. I will never forget her. How do you spend your time outside of work? I am fortunate to work in three of my favorite cities with an infinite list of things to do. Depending on which part of the globe work has taken me, I always manage to balance work and pleasure. I am easy going, adventurous and spontaneous by nature. I love to experience new food, new places with people I love...I am such a foodie! I’ll sometimes go for lunch or dinner in one place and go to have dessert and coffee in another. I also love antiques and flea markets. I never get bored with the excitement of holding in my hands a first empire treasure, abandoned by someone who doesn’t know how old it is…or finding an old piece of art, taking them home and giving them a new life! When in New York I indulge in massages and maintenance feel-good beauty treatments, a walk in Central Park with Lola, my 8-year-old Maltese who travels with me everywhere I go. And once in a while I like a Broadway show or an art gallery opening. In LA I like to dive into creative projects. At the moment, I am working on developing a revolutionary beauty solution that should launch next year. Stay tuned!
What advice would you give someone who wants to do semi-permanent cosmetics? Be aware that you are in charge. There are many factors to take into consideration. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What you might consider horrible might be beautiful by someone else’s standards. Find a technician whose values and definition of beauty are in alignment with yours. I believe beauty is innate and only needs to be enhanced, not disguised. Once this goal is achieved, the face naturally takes on the look of youth. All my clients are extremely discriminating and conservative; like me, they agree that less is definitely more. Once in a while I will meet a client whose vision is different than mine and I will have to politely decline her request because it’s against my philosophy and my artistic vision. As an artist I find it impossible to create something I don’t find attractive or beneficial to the client. So if anyone wanting semi-permanent makeup is offered a shape that doesn’t feel right, speak up! You don’t have to accept it. Make sure the technician of your choice is not using a traditional tattoo gun, which is inadequate for the delicate skin of the face. Also keep in mind that, regardless of how many years someone has been in practice, the most important factor for satisfaction is talent and artistry. When performed by expert hands, semi-permanent cosmetic [work] is a wonderful rejuvenating and beautifying procedure, allowing women to live their lives more freely and beautifully, anytime, anywhere, any way. However, when applied unnaturally, the results can be disastrous. May 2015 - BELLO

Force Of Nature:
WORDS BY BRAD LIBERTI PHOTOS BY TREVER HOEHNE
FOR MOST PEOPLE, THE HOLLYWOOD DREAM CONJURES UP IMAGES OF TENNIS COURTS AND EUROPEAN SPORTS CARS, VIP ACCESS, AND HOBNOBBING WITH THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE. BUT FOR THE ACTUAL TASTEMAKERS WHO DRIVE THIS TOWN THOSE ARTISTS AND TRADESPEOPLE WHOSE WORK IMBUES LA WITH THEIR UNIQUELY CREATIVE SOULS - ‘MAKING IT’ ISN’T ABOUT ACHIEVING A LIFESTYLE; IT’S ABOUT BUILDING A CAREER ON YOUR OWN TERMS.
“Perhaps I could have become a much bigger star much earlier on if I had made different choices,” says actress Carla Gugino as she reflects on an ever-growing body of work remarkable for its longevity, certainly, but more so for its variety and conviction. “I just was never really interested in branding myself or being known for only one thing. I’ve always wanted to be and have been inspired by transformational actors and actresses.” Maybe that’s that’s why nearly thirty years in, Gugino’s career is hotter than ever, with three - count ‘em, three high profile upcoming projects: HBO’s 51
new geopolitical comedy, The Brink, M. Night Shyamalan’s dystopian FOX mini-series, Wayward Pines, and Brad Peyton’s big screen FXtravaganza, San Andreas. Each is as different from the rest as possible, and all are premiering in the next few months. Ladies and gentlemen, witness the Hollywood Dream in action… “I think people get confused because they’ll come up to me and be like, “Wait a minute, you’re the mom in Spy Kids and the lesbian parole officer in Sin City! I don’t understand!” Gugino says with a laugh. Yet while she’s not unsympathetic to their plight, she’s not
about to make it any easier for them... not when exploring her enviable range is half the fun of it. “Wayward Pines is very dark material,” she admits, “while San Andreas is super intense, and I did more stunts than I’ve ever done in my life. And [The Brink] was just this thing that came my way and felt so fun.” Having received some of the best reviews of her career for her work opposite Sigourney Weaver in the 2012 USA mini-series Political Animals, Gugino was well-aware of just how rife the political sphere can be for May 2015 - BELLO

dramatization, but mining a potential World War Three scenario for laughs was something she knew would be risky. Alas, with big risk comes even bigger rewards. “I think when I saw Book of Mormon I was like, “Wow, here’s a play that is talking about AIDS and genital mutilation – the most serious things you could possibly ever imagine - and yet we’re watching it in this comedy that people are laughing out loud at.” I think that’s the great gift of comedy done well; it’s very entertaining and still manages to shine a light on a couple of things.” Also attracting the actress to Kim and Roberto Benabib’s series (premiering June 21st) was the chance to play opposite Academy Award Winner Tim Robbins. “My character and Tim’s are married. She’s a very successful lawyer and he’s the Secretary of State, and it’s definitely a really unusual relationship. They’ve chosen their own paths, which was so much fun and so hilarious to explore.” Equally as fulfilling, if not nearly as gutbusting, is the onscreen relationship she explores with Matt Dillon in the new Shyamalan-produced FOX miniseries, 53
Wayward Pines. Gugino explains that “Matt’s character, Ethan, is a secret service agent who goes to this small town called Wayward Pines, where his ex partner - and ultimately, we find out, ex lover (my character) - has gone with her new partner to investigate this fishy money trail. He then arrives in this beautiful perfect town and discovers that something is terribly off.” As with broad comedy, Gugino readily sees the virtues of “genre” storytelling. In fact, she commends shows like Wayward Pines, Twilight Zone, and Black Mirror for “using metaphor to shine a light on what is going on in the world.” And while reluctant to reveal too many details about the top-secret plot, she is nevertheless happy to extol the virtues of her famous costar. “[Matt] is such a real man, and so there was something that was fun to play with archetypally because my character has certain elements of that classic femme fatale.” And from one man’s man to the next, the actress can also be seen dodging at extinction level event opposite Hercules himself, The Rock, in this month’s disaster epic, San Andreas. “This is the third time I’ve worked with Dwayne (Race to Witch Mountain, Faster), although we
never actually had scenes together in those films. So it was great to actually work with him. And I did every stunt they would let me do; I got to do wire work and hang from helicopters and fall off buildings. It was incredible.” Even better for the actress was uncovering a surprising depth to her role that you might not expect in your typical popcorn flick. “What I loved about that in the script is this is the kind of movie that, if it were just amazing visual effects and incredible action sequences, it would be enough. But what’s so great about it – and this is really the ambition of Brad Peyton, our director as well – is that there is so much heart in this movie.” Ironically, the same could be said about Gugino and her ever-evolving tenure in this town. Coincidence? Absolutely not! “Acting really is the love of my life. It’s a huge driving force for me, so ultimately what I’m thankful for is that my choices are beginning to be recognized as a body of work. And hopefully these 30 years will just be a small portion of that body of work by the time they finally drag me off the stage.” We couldn’t agree more! May 2015 - BELLO

THE 2015 SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW:
11 Films We Can’t Wait To See BY HIKO MITSUZUKA, ADRIENNE MCILVAINE AND SCOTT YOUNGBAUER
TIS THE SEASON TO RAISE YOUR BAGS OF POPCORN, WAVE YOUR TICKET STUBS IN THE AIR, AND GRAB A COMFY SEAT IN THE NEAREST AIR-CONDITIONED THEATER. SURE, IT’S ANOTHER SEASON FULL OF COMIC-BOOK HEROES (AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, ANT-MAN), SCINTILLATING SEQUELS (HELLO, MAGIC MIKE XXL), AND SHAMELESS REMAKES (REALLY? VACATION?), BUT WE’RE CONFIDENT THERE ARE PLENTY OF ALTERNATIVE CINEMATIC OPTIONS OUT THERE TO ENTERTAIN YOU WITHOUT TURNING YOUR BRAIN INTO TOTAL MUSH. HERE’S OUR ANNUAL LIST OF WHAT WE CAN’T WAIT TO SEE BETWEEN NOW AND LABOR DAY.
1. Trainwreck (July 17) With her Emmy-nominated sketch comedy show now in its third season and a slew of high-profile comedy specials behind her, Amy Schumer is ready to conquer Hollywood. With the help of director Judd Apatow and co-star Bill Hader, this hilariously poignant comedy about a serial single lady (Schumer) who finds herself freaking out over falling in love might just be the thing.
2. The D Train (May 8) Jack Black is a perennial loser whose chance at redemption lies in convincing the most popular guy from high school (James Marsden) to ditch his model schedule and attend their high school reunion. Black looks like he’s in peak manic form, and the film’s surprising twists have us intrigued.
3. Dope (June 19) Produced by Forest Whitaker and Pharrell Williams, this post-hip-hop coming-of-age tale finds a geek yearning to escape his roots in Inglewood, CA and make it to Harvard. If the trailer is any indication, brace yourself for a glorious onslaught of ‘90s nostalgia.
4. Welcome to Me (May 1) Kristen Wiig is quickly joining the thin ranks of SNL stars whose postshow career is everything we hoped it would be. Here, she plays Alice, a woman with borderline personality disorder who wins $86 million in the lottery and sets up her own talk show. The trailer, which also features co-stars Linda Cardellini and James Marsden, is weirdly hilarious, poignantly dramatic, and compulsively watchable. GLOBAL issue - BELLOmag.com
60
5. Poltergeist (May 22) When we first heard that Tobe Hooper’s classic horror film about a family terrorized by vengeful spirits was being remade, our first thought was, why? But then we learned that Sam Raimi was involved as a producer and the always excellent Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt had signed on as the parental units. Now we’re counting down the days until we’re scared out of our minds.
6. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (August 14) Based on the iconic 1960s show of the same name, this spry actioncomedy from director Guy Ritchie could be just what we need after a summer of CGI explosions and otherworldly superheroes. Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer look terrific as the U.S. and KGB spies who reluctantly team up to fight a secret criminal organization, and the slightly campy Austin Powers vibe has us hoping for a deliciously evil villain.
7. The Diary of a Teenage Girl (August 7) What happens when a teen (Bel Powley) begins a “complex” love affair with her mother’s (Kristen Wiig again!) boyfriend, who’s played by the irresistible Alexander Skarsgård? A sharp, funny, provocative, and judgment-free account of one girl’s sexual and artistic awakening, that’s what. It’s set in 1976 and based on Phoebe Gloeckner’s novel of the same name.
8. Grandma (August 21) Lily Tomlin plays Elle Reid, who has just gotten through a breakup with her girlfriend when Elle’s granddaughter, Sage, unexpectedly shows up needing $600 bucks before sundown. Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash as their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets.
9. Ricki and the Flash (August 7) Directed by Jonathan Demme and written by Diablo Cody, Ricki and the Flash follows an aging guitar player (Meryl Streep) who returns home to make amends after she picked up and left her family to become a rock star. Streep learned to play guitar for the role, and is reunited on screen for the second time with her real-life daughter, Mamie Gummer. In our book, Meryl can do no wrong.
10. Straight Outta Compton (August 14) This gritty chronicle of the rise of influential gangsta rappers N.W.A. features a cast of unknowns portraying the seminal group, and was produced by former members Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. We’re hoping that the film captures the explosive power and attitude behind their game-changing music.
11. Regression (August 28) Emma Watson stars in a thriller directed by Alejandro Amenábar (The Others, Abre Los Ojos) as a girl who accuses her father of a crime he does not remember committing. Playing the detective assigned to the case, Ethan Hawke stumbles upon a much bigger mystery. The international trailer looks fantastic, and who wouldn’t pass up the chance to see Watson showcase her dramatic side? @TheFirstEcho @mizocty @oscarscott

The writing on Jane the Virgin can make me laugh and cry in the same five minutes and as an actor, that’s simply a dream come true. 1. Assuming Jane the Virgin has aired in Israel, how has the show translated there? Has the reach been as instant as it was here in the USA?
4. Petra has gone through so many changes, I couldn’t pinpoint where she’d be in five episodes...or a season from now. Any ideas?
Learning that the show was picked up in Israel was a big deal for me. Jane the Virgin is a very special show that people from any culture can respond and relate to. It was important to me that the people back home, my friends and my family, would be able to enjoy it as well. I’m very happy to report that since landing in Israel, I have had some lovely encounters with fans and people are loving the show.
For one, I do hope Petra will have more friends; she has had so many strange relationships that maybe she will have someone else to talk to other than Magda.
2. I’m Hispanic and grew up watching many telenovelas. Do you ever dabble in watching any yourself? Even though I didn’t grow up watching telenovelas myself, I did have many friends whose families would gather daily to watch their favorite telenovela. That was their bonding time and I always thought that was lovely and meaningful. The scenes of the Villanueva women having dinner and watching The Passions of Santos together remind me of those experiences. 3. What are Israeli soaps like? The closest thing I ever did to a soap in Israel was also a comedy. The show was funny, dramatic, heartbreaking, [and] involved a serial killer and four “villains” who were also very lovable. Oh, and it also had a ghost. 65
To be honest, even though I consider myself a fairly creative person, I am always surprised by the genius minds of our brilliant writers led by Jennie Urman. The ideas they come up with are so wild and fantastical, yet somehow they manage to make it all come together in the most organic believable way. I’ll leave it to them to keep the creative juices flowing and continue supplying us with more wonderful situations to play with. 5. With all the twists and bombs dropped during episodes, what’s a typical table read like for the cast? The table reads are my favorite! We are all so connected to our characters, the story and so passionate about everything that happens, so the table reads are very emotionally charged. Not to mention, we have Anthony our incredible narrator - joining in via video chat, which just really makes it a magical experience. Lots of laughter, usually some tears, some shocked finger pointing, oohs, aaahs and no
way!s can always be expected. There’s never a dull moment! 6. Petra’s hair and wardrobe are never out of place. Are you involved at all in choosing her individual looks? We have a great time during fittings. Our costume design, hair and makeup teams are incredible. I love the attention to detail, style and creativity with which they help shape Petra. Rachel, our designer, has created a unique style that I think matches Petra perfectly. Maybe because Petra is so different from me that over time it has become sort of a “Petra uniform” that I can step into and become the character... especially [in] the heels. 7. I’m itching to see you in more comedy, as I’m sure your fans are, too. Are you itching to do more of it? I love playing comedy. I adore the scenes when Petra gets to be funny, and I have a wonderful time filming them. One of my favorites was the time when Petra and her mother were locked in their hotel room with their accidental hostage. We had such a great time with those scenes and I look forward to more of them. I also think that one of the greatest things about this show is that you don’t have to decide on either comedy or drama, because it’s both. The writing on Jane the Virgin can make me laugh and cry in the same five minutes and as an actor, that’s simply a dream come true. May 2015 - BELLO

Spring Reads BY HIKO MITSUZUKA
IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO GET A JUMP START ON SOME SUMMER READING. THAT’S WHY WE’RE PULLING THIS TRIO OF TITLES OFF OUR SHELVES TO SHARE WITH YOU THIS SEASON.
FRENCH COAST
THE THUNDER OF GIANTS
If you prefer your chick-lit with a little more substance and a gorgeous international backdrop, then Anita Hughes’s story of loyalty and love in the luxury of the South of France might be your best bet. French Coast finds Serena, an editor at Vogue, who’s given the opportunity of a lifetime when she’s asked to interview the infamous editorin-chief of French Vogue. But, naturally, things don’t go so smoothly. One hotel room mix-up and one revealed secret later, our stressed-out investigative journalist finds her world turned upside down as she struggles to hold on to her career, her relationship, and her sanity. When names like Kate Spade, Valentino, Jacqueline Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, and Chanel get dropped within the first 25 pages, you know what kind of a read you’re in for. Enjoy the hell out of this one.
Canadian novelist and playwright Joel Fishbane has also been described as a “playwright, sous-chef, actor, trivia host, amateur boxer, occasional clarinet player, and general man about town.” You could say his novel, The Thunder of Giants, is just as delightfully quirky and eclectic. With shades of Big Fish and Water for Elephants, this novel blends fact and fiction to tell the extraordinary tale of the 8-foottall Andorra Kelsey and her journey to Hollywood to star in a movie based on the life of Anna Swan, the giantess who toured the world as part of P.T. Barnum’s American Museum decades earlier. It also delicately dissects the issue of body image. The women’s stories parallel each other as both long for normalcy and face a world that is too small to contain them. Don’t wait for the inevitable movie on this one. Grab a copy now.

THE ART OF NOT HAVING IT ALL: True Stories of Men, Sex and Other Disasters by Melissa Kite
Melissa Kite’s book does what few books like it don’t: it addresses head-on the guilt many single women face while trying to survive in a world promising them that they can “have it all.” For Melissa, it seemed like every woman she knew was heroically juggling work and family life, but there was a note on her fridge that read, “Don’t forget to get married and have kids,” which had been covered up by shopping lists and dry-cleaner receipts. A “modern-day Bridget Jones” (Easy Living Magazine), she didn’t believe there was anyone out there even remotely like her. The Art of Not Having it All is Melissa’s relatable journey toward understanding that not having it all – the white picket fence, the kid, the job, and Mr. Right – was enough for her, and can be for others as well. @TheFirstEcho

1. Mad Max: Fury Road The kids at Comic Con went mad last July when legendary Aussie bad boy and Mad Max mastermind George Miller showed a few scenes from the latest entry to his post-apocalyptic opus. Now, after all the delays and on-set controversy (reportedly quite a few temperatures ran high in Namibia), it appears as if this might be a worthy successor to his groundbreaking first two films. Now all we need is a Tina Turner music video to accompany it.
2. Aloha Sure, it’s been a while since he’s had a real hit (did anyone see We Bought a Zoo? No, seriously, because I still haven’t), but those of us lucky enough to remember the good ol’ days (Say Anything, Singles, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous) know not to count out this one-of-a-kind writer/director. Especially when he’s got a cast that includes Bill Murray, Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, and Rachel McAdams. Let’s hope, though, that even if his latest effort isn’t great, at least it’s interesting (i.e. more Vanilla Sky than Elizabethtown).
3. Grace and Frankie Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda play frenemies whose lives become inexplicably intertwined when their respective husbands run off with each other in this Netflix original comedy series. Honestly, do I need to waste another breath, or haven’t I sold it enough?
4. Bessie It’s been quite an interesting journey for Latifah since her Oscar Nomination for Chicago back in ‘03. Yet while she may have stumbled as a leading lady AND as a talk show host (to which I still say, WTF Queen?!), one can’t help but watch the trailer for this latest HBO original film – based on the tumultuous life of blues pioneer Bessie Smith – and blame only Hollywood for not knowing what to do with her oversize talent.

BY HIKO MITSUZUKA (@TheFirstEcho) It was inevitable. While movies continue to reboot and reimagine themselves to death at the multiplex, it was only a matter of time before TV jumped on the trend in full force. Of course, reviving yesterday’s properties on the small screen for a

new generation is nothing new. Anyone remember The Bradys, CBS’s awkward attempt to turn the classic sitcom The Brady Bunch into a ‘90s prime-time drama? Just me? Okay. But let’s not forget the failed attempts to bring back Knight Rider, Charlie’s Angels, and The Bionic Woman in the past decade.
This spring, the TV Revival was inescapable. The headlines appeared in our news feeds one after the other: Twin Peaks is being rebirthed on Showtime! Full House is getting Fuller on Netflix! Coach is coming back to NBC! And Fox is reopening one of the definitive shows of the ‘90s, The

X-Files, a drama that basically laid out the blueprints for future mythologydriven genre shows. As a TV geek who came of age during the show’s original run, this news brought out the ecstatic 15-year-old in me as well as the older and more cautious pop culture critic. Will this be too much of a good thing? Will this be a glorious return to something great, or will this be yet another disappointing attempt to capitalize on viewers’ nostalgia? There are a few ways creator Chris Carter and his arsenal of writer-
producers could approach this sixepisode miniseries (filming has yet to start, and a premiere date seems far off...we’re guessing sometime in 2016). And with last month’s news of Mitch Pileggi reprising his role as FBI Director Walter Skinner, we’re flying high on the following theories: 1. Bring Back the Alien Conspiracy: The last time we saw Mulder and Scully was on the big screen in 2008’s muchmaligned The X-Files: I Want To Believe, a standalone, mythology-free story that was basically the long, boring version of one of the show’s weaker episodes.
Therefore, perhaps Carter & Co. have wised up and are brainstorming a new way to revisit the alien saga that has always been the backdrop of the series. 2. Stretch Out a New Monster-ofthe-Week Story: On the other hand, it would be cool to see Mulder and Scully take on a fresh, new case that feels more fitting for these terrorismtinged 2010s. After all, this would make sense for a miniseries format. I wouldn’t be surprised if TV’s hottest FBI agents took on a new investigation involving something supremely sinister and completely creepy. Could ISIS be working with otherworldy beings? 3. Deliver Six Separate Monsterof-the-Week Stories: Personally speaking, this is the least preferred route to take. Why bother giving fans six contained episodes when serialized storytelling on the small screen is hotter than ever? Not only is this the least preferred approach, it’s also the least likely. Even though more details may be released at press time, one thing is true: the anticipation is high, and fanboys everywhere shall continue to wait patiently by their news feeds for more developments. And I will be one of them. 75

is Just Getting Started WORDS BY JOEY PARKER PHOTOS BY J. HORTON
IF YOU’VE EVER TRAVELED TO LA, YOU KNOW THAT NEARLY EVERYONE YOU MEET SEEMS TO BE EITHER AN ACTOR, SINGER, OR MODEL (OR SOME COMBINATION THEREOF). THUS, WE ARE FACED WITH A CITY FILLED WITH AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF TALENT. I MEAN, JUST LOOK AT HOW MANY SINGING REALITY SHOWS WE HAVE THESE DAYS! THERE IS AN ARMY OF TALENTED INDIVIDUALS OUT THERE, AND LA SEEMS TO BE THE MECCA FOR IT ALL. WHILE MANY SADLY GIVE UP ON THEIR DREAMS AFTER YEARS OF DEFEAT, SINGER IVY LEVAN HAS PROVED THAT WITH PASSION, DEDICATION, AND A STRONG DRIVE LIKE HERS, YOU CAN MAKE IT TO THE OTHER SIDE!
With a debut album on the way and two theme songs about to hit the big screen, Levan isn’t slowing down anytime soon! On June 5th, Levan will show off her talent for the theme song in the new movie Spy, as well as the new Mission Impossible movie later 79
this year. Those right there are two major things worth celebrating. “Spy is starring Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law, and Jason Statham. I just saw it, and hearing my voice at the beginning is so surreal,” she says. “So that’s f**king awesome.”
At the age of 16, Levan arrived in Hollywood, a far change from the norm back in Bentonville, Arkansas. While she may have left her southern state behind, her southern charm seemed to follow. “Being the southern girl that I am, it’s deeply imbedded in May 2015 - BELLO

It would not make any sense if I didn’t write from my experience. I enjoy this. I use my own selfishness on this, and end up making good music. me,” she says. “It affects pretty much everything that I do. From my lifestyle to my friends to the things I like, [and] even to the food...[it all] influences my music. It’s always a part of me. It’s in my blood.” Not only is LA filled with an enormous amount of talent, but it’s also filled with a lot of fame and fortune. How does one navigate through all that noise? For Levan, it was a journey that led her through a lot of not-sogood people in order for her to end up connecting with Lucas Banker. If you are unfamiliar with the name, let me catch you up. Banker is a songwriter as well as a producer who has worked with artists such as Selena Gomez and Junkie XL. When talking about her early career in LA, she says, “Well, like any struggle in LA, you keep moving and connecting. You hope to leave a good impression on people, which led me to Lucas. I’ve kind of been through the wringer and didn’t really have a good first experience in the music business, so that helped me learn what I do like and what I don’t like. I met Lucas through a mutual friend, and it was like magic.” With the army of egos in LA, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype. Luckily for Levan, she attributes her time back in Arkansas for keeping her grounded. “You always have to stay humble. Being a decent human being is a choice. I constantly want to learn, and always have my mind open,” she says. “I think this keeps me grounded. I am always 81
wanting knowledge. I have good friends, and have taken a long time to weed out a few.” Songwriting is a major part of an artist’s process. While many A-List singers have writers on board during their sessions, Levan is quite the opposite. “I don’t want to talk bad on anyone. Frank Sinatra didn’t write his songs, a lot of people don’t write their songs,” she says. “But for me, I have so much of a story to tell. It would not make any sense if I didn’t write from my experience. I enjoy this. I use my own selfishness on this, and end up making good music.” While many of us often spend hours venting to therapists about our problems, she says songwriting is an outlet for her that she uses as therapy. Writing is a powerful tool to get out your emotions, and to get your feelings off your chest. While the dreaded heartbreak in life may be tough to go through, it’s something we all experience. When talking about powering through these tough times she says, “Oh man, write some songs. It really helps! It’s that basic, actually. Start by writing your feelings down. Any medium that you can create and let go is a big A +. Also, none of us are perfect, none of us are alike, so who cares. Don’t be so serious, and don’t take life so seriously.” Can we get an amen to that!? Pursuing life’s biggest dreams isn’t always the easiest journey. In order for us to reach our goals, we often have to
embrace the storm as we go through it. For Levan, it was the bad moments that helped shape her into who she is today. She says it ended up helping her out later on in the music industry by providing clarity when looking who to work with on various projects. One of these major people in the industry was none other than Diplo himself. “It was a trip. He is a hoot and a character in his own,” she says. “I love when people have such unique style. He knows exactly what he wants. It was very organic and easy to get along with him.” After working hard at perfecting her music, she debuted her first single, “Biscuit,” earlier this year. “‘Biscuit’ comes from my Southern roots. There is a saying called ‘butter my butt and call me a biscuit,’ which basically is when you are astounded by someone’s actions or learn something new about someone,” she says. “Naturally, I applied it to taking on the haters in life and all the smoke blowing and bullshit I have dealt with in this industry the last two years. Kiss my biscuit. It’s tongueand-cheek.” People often think their favorite celebrities are born overnight; they believe singers and actors rise to fame overnight. But the truth couldn’t be further from that. “It’s not all rainbows, butterflies and puppies; it’s a lot of hard work. It’s a lot of slimy people. You have to have thick skin,” she says, laughing. “If you really believe in yourself, then you just have to keep moving forward and following what you love.” May 2015 - BELLO

SEATING FRONT ROW AT SOME OF THE MOST COVETED RUNWAY SHOWS DURING FASHION WEEK CAN BE A DIFFICULT TASK. WELL, IF YOU’RE NOT LOUISE ROE, THAT IS. THE UK-BORN BEAUTY CROSSED THE POND OVER 8 YEARS AGO TO BRING SOME OF THAT EFFORTLESSLY CHIC STYLE ONTO OUR TV SCREENS, AND HAS NOT STOPPED EVER SINCE. ROE HAS BECOME THE EPITOME OF THE EASY-GOING AND SAVVY FASHION EXPERT WHO CAN NAIL EVERY SINGLE LOOK FROM HEAD TO TOE.
Her sense of style is tailored but relaxed, romantic with a touch of edge, and always on-trend. In one word: eclectic. This open minded attitude has allowed her to play with colors, textures, patterns and vibes, and different hairstyle and makeup looks without ever looking like anything but herself. When you see her on the red carpet for Access Hollywood or E!, she is always polished and elegant; however, Roe manages to look as if everything fits with her persona in an organic manner. You never get the feeling that she is trying to impress anyone, or working hard to overdo any look. From TLC’s Styled By Jury to NBC’s Fashion Star to CW’s Plain Jane, she has made audiences across the world fall in love with her. Now with a new style book, Front Roe, Roe is ready to take her career to the next level. She continues to demonstrate her talent and creative vision through successful design and continuing to be a style guru for celebrities. By staying true to her bubbly and approachable personality, Roe has risen to the front row of entertainment and established herself as an important voice in the fashion industry. She has become a beloved social media influencer with well over a million followers, and has progressively grown into an inspiration for girls everywhere! Dee Trillo: You have a passion for TV, but also for writing. What do you enjoy the most about each of them? Louise Roe: I’m really glad I still get to do both. There’s a nice balance. 93
Getting all glammed up and reporting live from the red carpet is such a buzz, and I’m full of adrenaline. Then I get to have my Carrie Bradshaw moments writing a magazine column or blog post in my PJ’s with a cup of tea, which is much more relaxing. Both are creative in different ways, but I do love having control of my blog and the subjects I cover. I started Front Roe nearly a year ago, because I missed the editorship side of when I worked in magazines Tell us about your new book, The Front Roe. How was the process of creating the concept and publishing? I had the idea for Front Roe years ago, and have been making notes in one giant folder since. I realized I was getting asked a lot of questions over social media or on makeover shows, and I wanted there to be one, cohesive place where I could answer them all! I also enjoyed talking about my career and family, more personal stuff I’ve never revealed before. I was extremely hands on: I wrote the book in six months, I shot all the photography and insisted on proofreading it too, and I think I am a control freak! But I wanted the whole thing to be perfect; no spelling mistakes! Plain Jane gave you a platform to promote empowerment and selfesteem. Was that an inspiration for the book? Absolutely. Plain Jane was such an impactful show; it was more about women and their confidence, in the end, than just fashion. The link between self-esteem and how you dress is very
important in my opinion. So I wanted Front Roe to give practical ideas for how to find your own sense of style, how to express your personality through what you wear, and how to dress for moments when you need major confidence, like job interviews and first dates. What are the three things you want readers to take away from your style guide, Front Roe? Overall, I’d like readers to take away a feeling of empowerment and inspiration. The final chapter is called “How to be kind to yourself,” and I wrote it because I think we’re very hard on ourselves. We can champion our friends so easily, but when it comes to championing ourselves, we get stuck. Another huge part is finding your own unique style, and figuring out your body shape. Once you know how to dress your silhouette, clothes really begin to work to your advantage. Finally, there is a really effective secret recipe for my skin glowing smoothie, which tastes yummy! I talk about feeding your skin from the inside out, and this drink truly makes a difference within one week. Try it! As a fashion expert, you are on the pulse of new trends. What are your favorites for the spring and summer seasons? I love everything fringed. Tassels on bags and jackets are cute. I just got a black fringed bag from Meli Melo and I wear it everywhere. All the sorbet tones are really popping too: pistachio, lemon, peach. They look cool dressed down with faded denim and espadrilles. May 2015 - BELLO

In my career I’ve been lucky enough to learn from incredible, inspiring mentors, and in turn it makes me want to help other young women in any way I can, whether that’s through makeovers or mentorships. What are your must-have buys for a functional and versatile wardrobe? A trench coat will last you a lifetime. Great skinny jeans: I love the highwaisted ones from Anine Bing right now. Big shades. Asos and Topshop have some cool pairs. And a tailored navy blazer. My favorite is from Reiss; it has a thin lapel and the hem falls low on the thigh. Very chic over a simple cotton tee and leather skirt. As far as accessories, what are your go-to statement and staple pieces? I tend to make a statement with bright or printed shoes, so I’m always on the lookout for those. Senso is my favorite brand at the moment. And stacking delicate gold jewelry. Wanderlust + Co has some gorgeous midi rings and bangles. What does your beauty and skincare routine consist of? I try to do an at-home peel once a week with Kate Somerville’s peel, followed by a hydrating Eve Lom mask. Caudelie makes a great face cleanser. I love Sisley’s night cream, and in the day I always add Jouer’s primer and Lancôme’s tinted moisturizer with SPF to my Nars foundation. Share with us some quick and easy makeup and hairstyle tricks for a flawless look. I whip up a little makeup cocktail! And for hair, I recently cut mine so now to style it I use Tresemme Sea foam while it’s damp, and then add one bend to the 95
hair with my straighteners (I find this works better than a curling iron). Then a spritz of dry shampoo to give it that thick texture. What have been some of your most memorable red carpet gowns? I loved the blue printed Monique L’Huillier dress I wore to the Oscars this year. She is a genius; her dresses are so dramatic but still comfy. I also loved the red lace dress I wore to the Golden Globes the year before. That was also by Monique. I just felt bright and elegant. If you could only be on one social media platform, which one would it be and why? Instagram. It’s quick and visual and you can also buy clothes from it through the genius account, LikeToKnowIt. I love having a dialogue with my followers and am always answering their questions (and asking them some too). Follow me @LouiseRoe! It has been a journey for you as far as moving from the UK to the US. What do you miss about home, and what do you love about living in the US? I love LA so much. The lifestyle is outdoorsy, the sun shines every day and on the weekends you can hit the beach, the mountains or the desert, all within a couple hours’ drive. It’s awesome for road trips. But I do miss my family and best friends in England, and I miss the pubs, the tea and, occasionally, the rainy days (she laughs).
What similarities and differences do you find between the European and American styles? European style is a little more subdued. French and Italian women will often wear a simple, paired down look of jeans, flat loafers and a white shirt, but the way they roll the sleeves, pop their collar, or stack their jewelry gives them this innate chic. In California there’s a lot of bright color and print, which I love. What are some of the life lessons you have learned along the way? I’ve learned that women can either be cheerleaders or mean girls to each other. We have a choice. In my career I’ve been lucky enough to learn from incredible, inspiring mentors, and in turn it makes me want to help other young women in any way I can, whether that’s through makeovers or mentorships. I now work as ambassador to Step Up Women’s Network. It’s a charity that helps underprivileged high school girls meet their goals, so we go in and talk about resumes, college applications, how to nail an interview, etc. I’ve also learned that old friends are the gold ones: people who know you through and through and can call you out on things that happened over a decade ago! Having your priorities straight in this crazy showbiz town is crucial too. Yes, it’s awesome to get that big job or to dance at that fancy party, but your family and friends, and the little moments you share with them, are what you’ll really remember and treasure in 20 years’ time. McKenna Maduli THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME, ESPECIALLY WHEN THAT HOME IS HAWAII. FOR TV HOST AND DOCUMENTARY MAKER MCKENNA MADULI, IT’S A CONSTANT SOURCE OF INSPIRATION. HERE, SHE SHARES HER TRANSITION FROM GROWING UP ON ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST VISITED ISLANDS TO THE AMERICAN MAINLAND. AS TOLD TO KIMMY ERIN KERTES While I can’t say I wear muumuu’s, grass skirts, [or] coconut shell bras on the regular, my style is very deeply rooted in my Hawaiian roots. If you’ve been to the islands, you know that it’s quite humid, prone to surprise rain showers, spectacular rainbows and magnificent heat, as well as cool breezes and that heavy salty air that adds just a touch of frizz to your hair that just can’t be replicated by those sea salt sprays. It’s the quintessential tropical paradise, a vacation destination even to its residents...and I reveled in it.

Growing up in Honolulu, my closet was filled with an enormous rainbow of Hawaiian print dresses. There wasn’t a color on the planet Earth that wasn’t hanging in that closet! You would also find me in a white tank top (yes, only white) and Bongo shorts (yes, Bongo shorts!). Both looks were paired with Locals Only slippahs (translation: flip flops) without a single shred of shame for my un-pedicured Hula feet (which have since been tamed). There was no need to wear anything but sandals, and when there was, I went barefoot. I finally tried a high heel when I was 17, but I’m not sure it went very well. So you can see, I dressed like every single day was a vacation. And then came supposedly sunny California, but I was only cold! I had to buy boots! Wait, hold please, I remember thinking. feet? But it’s so much work to take them on and off! I had to buy pants! I have to cover my legs? Shorts come with legs on them? Never one to keep up with “next season’s big thing,” because what’s a “season” again? I found myself turning to classics in island colors. Then came cardigans and jackets and sweaters and the color black, pedicures and rain without rainbows. I found ways to layer sundresses with drapey sweaters and shrunken jackets, but only threw my flip flops on when running errands. I’ve opted for a “nicer” leather flip flop to replace [the] oh-so-durable rubber slippahs of my past, and laid my Bongos to rest. But it only took one magical day in Los Angeles to complete my metamorphosis. This wasn’t my normal TV hosting shoot,

I had to look twice at the photographer’s monitor to make sure the same girl who wore Bongo shorts could wear Versace...and she did. SOUTHERN SWEETHEART OLIVIA HOLT IS TAKING THE HOLLYWOOD SCENE BY STORM DESPITE BEING ONLY 17. SHE HAS ALREADY CONQUERED THE DISNEY WORLD AS THE FEMALE PROTAGONIST KIM ON THE SERIES KICKIN’ IT AND MORE RECENTLY AS LINDY WATSON ON THE NEW ORIGINAL SERIES I DIDN’T DO IT.
Her dream to be an actress struck at an early age, and with such a strong support system, it’s no wonder the mega-teen has made such great strides in the business already. “No matter what I dreamed of being or wanted to end up doing, my parents have always supported me on it. They were happy that I found something that I was crazy passionate about and wanted to be there to help and encourage me every step of the way.” Although her parents have played a vital role in her success, Olivia credits her older sister as her muse. “My older sister, Morgan, was really my biggest influence on exploring this world. I grew up around her creative perspectives and beautiful outlooks on people and life, and I was so magnetized by that.” Kickin’ It was Olivia’s first big break, although she seems to have further secured her fame in her role as the loveable Lindy Watson in I Didn’t Do It. Olivia revealed she shares some significant parallels with her character. “Lindy and I are very similar. Even though she has just started high school and I’m just now graduating high school, we’re still growing into our own skin. Luckily, we have the greatest friends in the world to help us through just about anything. We have so much adoration for them. Our ambition, motivation and determination I feel is very much on the same level. Right now, I’m emotionally where Lindy is at and that’s fun to put on its feet. The challenge is finding 137
a balance for her. She has all this passion inside her, but she’s also funny and has a fun energy to her that I really want and hope the audience sees and connects with.” What makes the show even more authentic and organic are her genuine relationships with the ensemble cast of the show, particularly Austin North and Piper Curda. “They are both such beautiful human beings. Real genuine, too. You don’t find people like that often, so I’m lucky to know them and call them some of my best friends. I’m also never letting them go. They’re stuck with me!” It’s a shame Olivia wasn’t born in a different era, as her favorite TV shows have unfortunately run their course. When asked what programs she would want to make a cameo appearance in, Olivia admitted, “I wish How I Met Your Mother, Friends, or The Office were still on because those three would be my top choices.” It’s not all bad news, however, as we might see a collaboration between Olivia and former Friends gueststar Reese Witherspoon (she played Rachel’s spoilt but loveable little sister!). Olivia revealed this would be her ideal actress to work with. “To work with Reese Witherspoon would be a dream. I’ve seen the majority of her work and not once have I ever not loved a performance.”
Fortunately, though, Olivia has been lucky enough to work alongside a different blonde idol - Renée Zellweger in their upcoming movie, Same Kind of Different as Me, due to be released in 2016. Olivia had nothing but praise for the talented actress. “She is the most down-to-earth and kindest soul I have ever worked with. She has the ability to make everyone around her smile and feel special. That is a very rare quality to have. [I’m] happy to know her and have had the privilege to work with her.” Although her movie won’t debut until 2016, it seems her fans are still in for another treat in the near future. “Right now I’m spending time in the recording studio writing music and working on my first album with Hollywood Records. I’m super stoked for everyone to hear it when it’s released. I’m enjoying every second of making it.” Olivia has already bathed in the success from her TV shows, but it seems there is a bright future ahead in the way of Hollywood. Her morals are as downto-earth as she is. In the wise words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, which Olivia swears by, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” It was a pleasure to interview such a refreshingly honest and optimistic star-in-the-making. She’s definitely one you’ll want to keep your eye on! May 2015 - BELLO

THIS SHOOT WAS ABOUT THE RAW HONESTY IN THE FIGHT BETWEEN LIGHT AND DARK, A FIGHT THAT EVERYBODY DEALS WITH ON A DAILY BASIS, IN ALL AREAS OF LIFE. WE DON’T LIKE TO TALK ABOUT IT OPENLY, BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE DOES. WE DEAL WITH THESE BATTLES ALONE. THROUGH THE SERIES, I TRY TO SHUN IT AWAY WHILE THE DARK STARTS TO TAKEOVER MY BODY AND BY THE END, WHILE I STILL WEAR THE DARKNESS, I REALIZE I’M NOT ALONE. THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS I HAVE ARE BEING EXPERIENCED ALL OVER OUR EARTH. THIS THOUGHT MAKES ME STRONGER AND BECOMES A REMINDER, A REMINDER TO ALWAYS TAKE NOTICE OF ALL THE LIGHT, EVEN WHEN IT’S BARELY THERE. - DANI THORNE

Bello: How did you get your start in tattooing? How did you learn the art of tattooing? Matt: I gravitated towards tattoos as a teenager through skateboarding and music. I’ve always been drawn to individual forms of expression and counter-cultural pursuits. I was lucky enough to have my good bud J. Swan working at a shop called Gold Coast Tattoo on the central coast. Through getting tattooed by him, I got to know everyone there, and I was eventually able to talk the owner of the shop into giving me a shot apprenticing there. That was 15 years ago. How old were you when you got your first tattoo, and what was it? I got a tattoo of an octopus when I was 17. I had just graduated high school, and flew over to California from Hawaii to go on a road trip. We kicked off our freedom in Hollywood, and I was itching for a tattoo. It has since been covered up...(he laughs) What influences in your life have guided you towards your signature style? There are so many styles of tattoos, and it seems at first glance that anything is possible. So many things look great when they’re first applied, but just don’t stand the test of time in the skin. Tattoos are graphic by nature. They need black outlines and shading to hold everything together and create contrast. I just want to make a tattoo that will be readable and is going to age well. If you were not a tattoo artist, what would you be? If I weren’t tattooing, I’d probably be creating in one form or another. I’ve always pursued creative outlets of selfexpression.

Looking at your work, I can see that you have a traditional tattoo style. Can you tell us what a “traditional” tattoo is and what draws you towards that style? Traditional tattoos generally consist of bold outlines, a good amount of black shading, and powerful imagery rendered in a way that isn’t overly complicated. The whole idea is to create a tattoo that is readable from a distance, and ages well in the skin. What would be your dream piece to do on someone? I don’t know about a “dream” tattoo, but I do know I most enjoy working on subjects that were designed specifically to be tattoos, as opposed to trying to interpret somebody’s abstract thought, or crazy tweaker doodle, into a tattoo. In 2011, he opened his own production facility, specializing in upholstery and carpentry, located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. This makes him one of the few American furniture designers who are completely vertically integrated with the ability to competitively design and manufacture his products all in America. Born in 1975 and raised in the Washington D.C. metro area, Niu moved to Los Angeles, California in 1996 to attend Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, where he is also an active faculty member today. Bello: How did you get your start in design? Nolen: I never knew design could be a career path until an architect friend gave me a book about product design. He was also the one that introduced me to Art Center College of Design, and that’s how I found out about my alma mater. What influences in your life have guided you towards your signature style?

What was your first official job in the field of design? Was it a good or bad experience? Although I graduated with a degree in Industrial Design, my first official job was actually a user interface designer for websites during the dot-com boom. It was a great experience because they gave me the opportunity to manage teams of people, which definitely came in handy when I started out on my own. I see that you have recently ventured into the world of reality TV with the show Framework on Spike TV. How was your experience with that, and is this something that you would like to do more of in the future? Framework was such an amazing experience since I never knew how much goes into making a reality TV show. All the different facets of filming, production, and editing were so new to me that I found myself engulfed in the process. If given the opportunity, I would definitely do more in the future. What are your favorite types of pieces to design and why? Sofas are my absolute favorite pieces to design. It’s such a social piece because it allows people to sit, relax, converse, or even take a nap. It also tends to be the center piece within a family or living room, so not only does it have to be comfortable, it should look amazing too. What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not working? Eat, eat, and eat! I’m a huge foodie and love trying new spots. Define your design style. Clean, graphic, and minimal. Glass half full or glass half empty? Always glass half full! I read that you are into racecars. German or Italian design? Both! I can’t really pick between the two since I’m an auto enthusiast in general. To Check out Nolen’s designs, go to www. nolenniu.com.

I love being an artist. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. It feels amazing knowing that I am a visual storyteller of the world. I have an opportunity to curate my own art world, and live halfway between fantasies and realities. – Zachary Crane
Zachary Crane Artist
I recently read Jane’s book, My Life So Far.” I was incredibly inspired by her spirit, grit, and strength. I have been into Jane Fonda since I was ten years old. I grew up watching Barefoot in the Park, [The] Electric Horseman and Barbarella when my parents weren’t home. I also watched her exercise videos while helping my Mom fold laundry. In the book, she talks about her childhood and how much she has overcome. Jane watched The Lone Ranger every week and connected with the cowboy star Howdy Doody. She wanted to be tough like Howdy Doody and save the day. Jane grew up in a family with an inattentive father and a mentally unstable mother. At times, Jane connected with the character from The Lone Ranger just so she could stay tough and get by. The book is all about how her mind changed as she got older. What being strong really meant. What true love really is. I was so inspired by Jane’s compelling story that I wanted to make a portrait
165
of her current self, dressed as that little cowboy. I brought an edge to it by having her tits out, and an expression on her face that says, “It’s Lone Ranger time.” I met the incredible photographer, Tony Duran, at one of my exhibits in Hollywood, at the Roosevelt Hotel. He’s such a legend, and so extremely talented. It was such an honor having him there looking at my work. I noticed him spending more time than most looking at my work. As the night went on, Tony and I got to chatting and hit it off instantly. We spoke such a similar language. We both see fame and “celebrity” in a similar way. Obviously different mediums, but they have a way of understanding each other. We knew that we needed to work together. He has an amazing friendship with Jane, having shot her for years. He expressed to me how ahead of her time she is, so advanced for her generation. Later, Tony set up a situation to present the work in front of Jane. She loved it and
understood the shock factor to it, but also understood the deeper meaning and the beauty of healing. The piece is a celebration of a healing, and having a forward-thinking mind. To me, that is everything I think of when I hear the name “Jane Fonda.” Now, my piece hangs beside a giant Warhol she has of herself. Could one be more honored? Tony and I eventually got to work together. He took photos of me and it was unlike anything I have ever experienced. Getting to have my photos taken by Tony was unlike anything I have ever experienced. The man is a digital painter. The way he directed me was like he was looking at a canvas. He used his finger to point and direct my body, and explained to me which muscles to use in my face to do what he was envisioning. He has a strong understanding of anatomy, and structure. NOBODY CAN DENY THE PHYSICAL BEAUTY OF BROOKE BURNS. THIS FORMER BAYWATCH BABE IS JUST AS GORGEOUS IN HER LATE 30’S AS SHE WAS WHEN SHE STARTED THE TV PHENOMENON AT 20 YEARS OLD. YET IT’S HER LAID BACK PERSONALITY AND INFECTIOUS LAUGH THAT TRULY CAPTIVATE YOUR HEART. HER STUNNING FACE - AND ENVIABLE BODY - IS OVERSHADOWED BY THE CANDOR AND HUMBLE MANNER IN WHICH SHE SPEAKS, AS WELL AS THE KIND WAY IN WHICH SHE INTERACTS WITH OTHERS. SHE IS CONSISTENTLY DEFYING AGE, BUT UNBEKNOWNST TO MANY, SHE HAS UNFAILINGLY OVERCOME SOME DIFFICULT CHALLENGES.
Burns has become the embodiment of endurance, strength and determination. And ten years after a near-death accident, she has proven her resilient spirit cannot be broken. The recovery from breaking her neck was nothing short of miraculous. The outpour of support from fans all over the world, colleagues in the entertainment industry, and the media was a representation of the positive impact that she had on the lives of many, and the moment we watched her stand on her feet again was truly an extraordinary thing to witness. The many trials she has faced have not slowed her down. Her next stop is starring as Maggie in Gourmet Detective, a deliciously intriguing TV movie for Hallmark’s Movies & Mysteries Channel, which releases May 16th. Burns has a packed schedule and balances being a mom, actress, TV host for trivia show The Chase, and philanthropist. To top it off, she is a serial entrepreneur, working on developing a line of meaningful jewelry and a new show for Oxygen. As you can see, Burns has no intentions to put the brakes on her professional life; however, she is not one to sacrifice her time with loved ones for work. She is very adamant about always making them her priority. She has managed to turn difficult situations into platforms to help others and has, in a very unpretentious way, become an inspiring role model. Burns would be too modest to admit it, but she is definitely someone we would all proudly aspire to be. Dee Trillo: It’s been ten years since your extraordinary recovery from 171
a severe neck injury. How did that experience change your life? Brooke Burns: I’m very excited. Maybe [that’s] not the right word...haha...but it’s definitely very impactful for me knowing that it has been ten years since the accident. It brings it to the forefront run of your mind again because it is such a huge mile marker. I try every year on November 11th the day when it happened in 2005 - to have my friends over, and I do a bit of my own thanksgiving. I sit down with friends and family, and we talk about all the things that we are grateful for, obviously starting with life, being able to walk, and health. The simple basic things, but also friendships and the people that you have in your life, and what you’re doing with it. I think every time you have a neardeath kind of experience, it changes you. I definitely went through my little black book and tried to assess who was in my life, if I was making decisions that made me happy, if I was been the kind of mother that I wanted to be...all those things, the big life decisions that I guess sometimes we take for granted because we get into a routine with the day in and out. It actually makes you stop and take inventory of your life. I, at only 30 years old, have Degenerative Disc Lumbar Disease. Are there any exercises you would recommend for people with spine injuries or moms with back problems? That’s a really good question! For me, I did a lot of water therapy for my recovery. Not many specific exercises because I had a spinal fusion, so I have a rod and two plates with ten screws of titanium
from the neck down. They mobilized me in a brace so the bone would regrow in a contained environment. So to get that mobility back, slowly but surely, I found that being in the water was extremely helpful, ironically, for [rehabilitating] my neck. I would definitely recommend it, especially for women, because we have to be careful with our joints, running, and all those things that are more high-impact. It allows you to recover in a safer environment, because you don’t have that weight barring [you] and it’s a very healing process. You keep an incredible shape, even when busy on set. What healthy habit tips do you recommend for women who are always on the go? So difficult to [keep] a schedule, especially in our industry where it’s so hard to make a schedule (she laughs). Having a daughter who is in high school, who has her own social schedule, sports schedule and academic schedule is very difficult. Balance is a word that I continuously try to achieve in my life. It’s a word that I put on a pedestal and try to remind myself often, every day even. I’ve found for myself that a lot of times, fortunately or unfortunately, those really early hours of the mornings are the place to get it in there. Luckily, I’m a big lover of sunrise. I try to get up early and go for a hike. I love to be outside. I think it helps me stay in shape physically, and also emotionally, because you just get a different perspective when you go outside. Get a bit of vitamin D. But if I’m not able to do that then I try to do stuff at home, stay active in between May 2015 - BELLO

those little places. Take the stairs instead of an elevator, walk around the neighborhood, and if I’m doing errands, try to do it on foot. Little things like that. Jump[ing] into the pool to make it fun. If I can, I try to get outside and do little weights. I don’t do a lot of heavy weight. I used to be in the gym a lot more, but I’ve found that as I get older the kind of body that I want is longer and leaner. It’s less impactful for me, and for women. Using your own body weight is a good solution and trying to stay away from heavy lifting because it can be more difficult, again, for joints and bones. So it’s more about making a conscious decision? Exactly! I try to do it every day. Your skin looks so radiant. It’s hard to believe you have a soon-to-be 15-yearold daughter. Do you have a beauty routine you cannot live without? Oh wow, thank you for the compliment, first of all! I don’t have a crazy routine because I’m always so busy. I like to keep it simple. I use Oil of Olay for my face wash, which is funny because it’s a drugstore product, but I’ve found that is the best to take off makeup and dirt. And then I use a glycolic cleanser, maybe once a day in the morning when I don’t have any makeup, to remove dead skin cells and all that. Moisturizing, and obviously sunscreen, and staying out of the sun as much as you can. If I can, I try to get a facial once every couple of months, but again that takes time. I think it’s about being faithful with the little things; if you are consistent in cleaning your skin, moisturizing your skin and protecting it from the sun, I think that’s what’s really important. That’s a good easy 3-step routine! Yes! Also, not falling sleep with makeup on and don’t forget, after you work out, to wash your face because of all the bacteria. How would you describe your personal style, and how has it evolved now that you are a mother?

I’ve always been a girly girl in the sense that when I was little I used to have this lavender dress and it was my favorite dress, and I wanted to wear it everywhere. It didn’t matter if I was going to the park to play in the sand. I was like, “I want my dress! I want my dress!” I love getting dressed up and putting on a good pair of heels. Now, since my work entails so much of that, I found that in my everyday life, I really go for comfort. At the same time, I like to have a bit of edge and a bit of style. I think that people would say I have a sporty style, maybe with a feminine twist, but I also like a bit of an edge as well. I’m never afraid to mix those together; I would do my motorcycle boots with a pretty lace top. But, running around as a mom, I’m a jeans-and-Converse kind of girl. So besides jeans, which are some of the items in your closet that you love the most? My staple pieces [include] a pair of jeans - maybe it comes from my Texas roots - [and] I’m kind of a big boot girl, quick throw-on zip-up the back boots, and I have many slouchy boots. Again, fast and easy, but still looks cute. A bit of style and a kick, running out the door. But we live in Cali and the beautiful weather. And then layer, you know? Layer up to add fast style, throw in a scarf, or if I’m feeling more sporty I’ll grab a hoodie, or if I’m feeling more edgy I’ll grab my motorcycle jacket, or if I need to be more elegant then I’ll put on a blazer. What have been some memorable experiences you’ve had in your career? I feel like in all my career choices, I’m adventurous [and] I love to travel, so one of the things that I’m so appreciative about having this career in the entertainment industry is the ability to get paid while you travel and go to some amazing places. When Baywatch moved to Hawaii, I think I made some of the best friends in my life. I was also introduced to wind surfing, rock 173
climbing, being in the ocean, and amazing things that I was offered by going to these places. I did a show for Fox - actually right after breaking my neck - called Pepper Dennis that really made me fall in love with comedy and finding a character that had a naïve sense of the world. It was a cross between my mom and my daughter – who was five at the time - so it was a really fun character to play. A good-doer, but emotionally immature. Tell us about Gourmet Detective, your new project on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. It’s great to play those darker, emotional roles that are more taxing. As you get older, it’s good medicine for the soul. I was really excited when they came to me with the script. Dylan Neal and Becky, his wife, wrote it and are executive producers. He said when we first met, “We are looking for a leading lady who doesn’t take herself too seriously, [is] able to have fun, but most of all be kind. Because we are going to be spending a lot of time together.” The character was very appealing because she is super sassy, [and] has a bit of an attitude. People have been comparing [her] to a cross between Castle and Murder, She Wrote, which is a show I loved because I used to watch it with my mom when I was growing up. So I love those good mysteries! Do you feel it’s completely different than what you’ve done before? Yes, definitely! I think that’s what’s wonderful about our industry. The opportunity to do all kind of different occupations in a short amount of time, and just get a little taste of everything. Speaking of the movie, what are some of your sweet and savory indulgences? My favorite sweets? Anything! I have a major sweet tooth. I love ice cream, I love sourdough cookies. I just had a caramel-salt coconut shaving milkshake that was the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever had. So you’re catching me on that! But yeah, I would say
ice cream is my most consistent indulgence. For savory, I love guacamole. I have that Tex-Mex thing in me; I love Mexican food. It’s often a challenge to balance work and home life. How do you manage your time and schedule? I guess trying to be flexible and to not hold on to anything too tightly, because some days things won’t get done, and you have to live in acceptance of that. Really, [it’s about] trying to prioritize. For me, family comes first. I grew up in my family where my parents were both good at making my sister and I feel like we were the most important thing to them. Anything that would get in the way of that would become the first thing to sacrifice before family. I think I had a great example of that, so I do try to live that way. I’ve had many open conversations with Madison and I ask her, “Are you comfortable with me being gone for this amount of time?” One of the best feelings in the world was the other day. She comes and says to me, “Mom, I know you always ask me these things, but do you love what you do?” And I said, “Yes!” And she said, “Well, I can tell, because you are always so happy when you are working. All I want is for you to happy.” Wow! That’s the biggest validation as a parent! Definitely! It was beautiful to hear that. I think when you lay the ground work with your family they know in their hearts they are the most important thing, and when you do have to leave and work, they know it’s for a short time. Then she comes and says to me, “Mom, you’re such a great example to me. Like, I want to work, I want to have a career, and have a family.” People say that it’s really difficult to do it all, and do it all well. I do think at some point sacrifices do have to be made, but for me, my choices have always been to sacrifice other things besides family. In the end, I think, I’m never going to be on my deathbed and May 2015 - BELLO

look back and go, “Oh, you know, I really wish I had quit my job and spent more time with my kid.” At the same time, investing time in myself - and something that I love and that fulfills me - makes me a better mom! Happier, and I have more confidence in myself and my life, and [am] able to creatively express myself. Especially [with] having a daughter, it’s important that I live a life that is a good example. It can be a bit taxing, but you know what? It’s all worth it! I agree. Being a mom, you have to be the nurse, chauffeur, the teacher... Yes! (she laughs) You have to wear a lot of hats! So, what would be your perfect Mother’s Day? Maddie and I have something we say, which is, a thousand hugs and kisses. So that’s my goal: to get a thousand hugs and kisses. You do a lot of philanthropic work. Tell us about your involvement with various organizations. I think the most important thing when working with a charity is being authentic to the cause, so I’ve always been a big supporter of anything that has to do with protecting children, because being a mom has always been the most important thing for me. Also, after breaking my neck, I got involved with LRO and the Christopher Reeves Foundation to help them by not only investing my time with other people who have been injured, but donating money for spinal cord research. I’ve always had a heart for young girls, girls who don’t have a family, and it’s when you’re out in the world that you realize how important it is to have a wonderful mom and dad. I’ve also been part of organizations that work with kids in foster care and been a big sister. To me, being a female role model is really important.

The Limited Reach of
Red Wine’s Health Benefits BY BETH SHAW
RECENTLY, THERE’S A FITNESS RUMOR GOING AROUND THAT CONSUMING ONE GLASS OF RED WINE PROVIDES HEALTH BENEFITS EQUAL TO THE ONES WE GET OUT OF DOING A ONE HOUR WORKOUT AT THE GYM. THIS IS A SEDUCTIVE HEADLINE. “SCORE!” READERS ARE THINKING, “A GLASS OF CABERNET EVERY DAY WILL KEEP ME JUST AS FIT AS 60 MINUTES ON THE TREADMILL? FILL ‘ER UP!”
Yes, it’s no surprise that this circulating nutrition trend is attracting lots of attention. It’s easy to believe in things we want to believe in, like, for example, the notion that kicking back with a nice red will do just as much for you as sweating through a tough cardio session.
amazing power of proper nutrition and regular exercise if it were really true that red wine does just as much for our health. Red wine delivers resveratrol, yes, but like all alcoholic beverages, it also contains ethanol, which behaves like poison in the metabolism...not to mention a ton of sugar and calories!
I feel a duty, however, to set the facts straight in the name of the yoga and fitness program I believe in so fully and those who practice it.
Daily exercise strengthens your cardiovascular system, purifies your skin, jump-starts your body’s ability to burn calories, and releases a flood of natural endorphins that noticeably enhance your energy level and sense of well being. If there’s an equivalent trade-in for the myriad gifts of regular exercise, human society hasn’t found it. Exercise is unique in its ability to keep the body and mind happy and healthy, and while alcohol in close moderation is not a critical impediment to overall health, I recommend that anyone aiming to truly calibrate his or her body and mood eliminates it entirely. Alcohol provides momentary relaxation and poses a subsequent obstruction of our digestion and mood. It is a fleeting fix to a larger question of how to make ourselves feel relaxed and happy on
I used to enjoy drinking more than I do now. At a time when I was enjoying multiple drinks per week, I was also having a lot of trouble ridding extra bulk from my mid section. My fitness trainer asked me about my alcohol intake, and reminded me that each of my drinks was going straight to my waist despite my commitment to healthy eating and regular exercise. Yes, red wine contains resveratrol, a compound that carries a variety of health benefits. But I would have had a very hard time persuading people over the past twenty years to tap into the GLOBAL issue - BELLOmag.com

The 3 Values of
Island Life BY CHRISTINE CHANG
I’M IN THE COOK ISLANDS THIS WEEK PHOTOGRAPHING A WEDDING. IT’S MY THIRD TIME BACK. I LOVE COMING TO THE COOK ISLANDS, PARTICULARLY AITUTAKI, BECAUSE IT BREAKS ME OF STRESSFUL (AND OFTEN UNNECESSARY) CITY HABITS.
Being here on a small island reminds me that life is SO much easier when you practice these three things:
1. Simplicity Outfit? Swimsuit. Shoes? Optional. Hungry? Catch a fish. Thirsty? Pick a coconut. Hot? Jump in the water. You do what you would naturally do without having a bunch of other distractions. Life is easy when you keep things simple.
2. Surrender I am a crazy person. The Internet here is worse than 1991 dial-up. The first day, I was trying to send an email and it kept failing. Frustrated, I clicked the “try again” button 50 times in a row. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. At that point, I decided I can either continue being a crazy person, or surrender. It took a few days, but eventually I became comfortable with not desperately needing to respond to work emails every day. No Internet will truly make you realize how addicted to it you are.
3. Trust If you hitchhike, anyone and everyone on the island will pick you up with a smile on their face. I can leave my camera equipment anywhere unattended. Nothing gets stolen, ever. Upon arrival, I went to pick up a rental car. I asked if they needed my driver’s license. The lady handed me the keys and said, “Nah, just don’t drive it into the lagoon.” Island life reminds me how GOOD it feels to trust. Your soul thrives when you feel safe and connected to others. Isn’t this the way life should always be?
