Letter from the Editor “New” is an expectation of mine, and perhaps, dare I say, of all the fashion world. By its very nature, fashion commands it of us, conditions us to feel that if something isn’t new enough, it needs reinvention, or might not be something worth buying. How designers, photographers, and stylists constantly find that newness may seem a mystery, but for Bello’s collaborators, it is essentially a part of our nature. But how does “newness” balance with identity? As we celebrate our new format, we invite you to delight in this issue’s newness from new jewelry line THIRTEEN31 and One to Watch, Jeffrey Dodd, to veteran stylists Karen Raphael and Toye Adedipe’s celebrity shoots filled with their new takes on old classics of Jesse Lee Soffer and Anna Piop, respectively. In “Seen Nothing Yet,” new face (and body) Tyler Lough leaves a lasting impression in our pages, photographed by Kevin Roldan. Songwriter and new Bravo TV star Stefanie Ridel dives into her history as a valley girl and popgirl-band-girl to reveal her refreshing take on fashion today in this month’s “In Her Shoes.” Also with a feminie touch, Alexia Sharell Winfield shares “The Last Day on Earth,” a wonderfully vivid and resonating take on hot pink. Finally, TJ Manou takes us into a futuristic time lapse that equally resonates in 2002 as it does 2020 with “The Story of 8.” All of our stories are intended to bring you new inspiration and new ways of being you, just as we present our new identity. Enjoy. Kimmy Erin Kertes, Fashion Editor P.S. We welcome your feedback on this and our newness. Send your thoughts to Kimmy@Bellomag.com.

FOREWORD I am sitting at the airport in London while writting this letter and checking out all the fashions stores we have here. Even today, when you find the same brands all over the world, there is a distinct difference of how they are produced for the different markets. It is these differences that make us unique exuding our different cultures, styles, and herritages... and no one knows is better than an international team like we have here at BELLO mag. This issue is all about the new and reinventing the new. We have done this by going weekly, by making each issue more dynamic, fun, and creative than the one before, and by bringing more contributors on board. We hope this window we have created will be a perfect peak to all of you to explore new things, to motivate you to also reinvent yourself, and have great time while doing it. Yes, my flight is almost taking off, and by the time you read this, I will be drinking a cocktail on the roof top pool in Los Angeles, and am so looking forward to it. The sky is the limit. Ciao, Aleksandar Tomovic Editor in Chief
INTRO Welcome to our second weekly issue ever... The Fashion Issue. Shot in sunny Los Angeles by celeb photographer Teren Oddo, we have the handsome Jesse Lee Soffer from NBC’s Chicago P.D. covering this first edition of our separated issues. Also, our inside Lifestyle cover girl is the gorgeous Anna Diop shot on a Hollywood hillside by photographer Jana Williams. Enjoy, Leslie Alejandro Executive Editor of Bello mag

COVER STORY
Cops and Robbers:
Jesse Lee Soffer WORDS BY GLENN GARNER PHOTOS BY TEREN ODDO
IT’S HARD NOT TO NOTICE POLICE IN THE MEDIA LATELY…ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY LOOK LIKE JESSE LEE SOFFER. SOFFER STARS IN CHICAGO P.D. AS DETECTIVE JAY HALSTEAD, A CHARMING TOUGH GUY PACKING HEAT. I SPOKE WITH SOFFER ABOUT HIS CAREER AND WHAT IT MEANS TO PORTRAY A COP ON TELEVISION TODAY.
Bello: So you’ve been acting for a while now, right? JLS: Yeah, I started really young. I started when I was six. I noticed you were in The Brady Bunch Movie and A Very Brady Sequel in the ‘90s. I’m a ‘90s kid, so I think I saw the movies before I ever saw the show. Which is sad, because the show is so different from the movies. The show is so wholesome and all-American, and the movies were grotesque and brutal and just a satire. But I love it. It’s so funny. 7
They’re great. We had so much fun. I was very proud of those when I was younger; that was kind of my first big step into the industry and into the film world. And working with Gary Cole and Shelley Long, it was a real trip, and a great learning experience for an eleven-year-old. Now you play Jay Halstead on Chicago P.D., Chicago Fire and Law & Order: SVU. Does that ever get confusing with three different storylines? It gets so confusing sometimes. Shooting a television show is like guerilla warfare; it’s like, one day, you’re here on this set [and] the next June 2015 - BELLO

day, you’re maybe filming on this set. And the storyline you filmed the day before actually takes place like two weeks later...so it makes no sense. It’s a complete free-for-all, and keeping track of it can be exhausting. But it’s a lot of fun, and we love playing with the SVU cast when we get to go to New York and obviously when our brothers and sisters on Chicago Fire come hang out with us. But yeah, keeping track of storylines when things are being shot out of order and you’ve got three different shows going and now a fourth, Chicago Med, I don’t know how we’re going to pull it off. But we’re doing the best we can. I know we’ll do a good job. For your role, have you been able to research with other police officers and get to know the job? We did a lot of training. You know, all the cops you see on our show that are extras, they’re real cops on their day off. And that’s one of the things that makes our show so authentic, and I think that comes through and the viewers love that. From the beginning, we were working with a guy named Brian Luce and another guy named Walt Smith who are our technical advisors, and both have probably combined 50 years on the force and have done all sorts of different jobs from intelligence to narcotics, and they are hanging around with us all day every day, giving us tidbits here and there about what someone might be thinking in a situation. That just enhances the performance for us. I assume you’ve noticed all the animosity toward police in the news lately. How does it feel to portray someone in a position that’s coming under fire from a lot of society right
9
now? I’m actually glad you asked that. It’s an interesting position to be in, and it’s frustrating at times. I work with men and women that I have the utmost level of respect and gratitude for because they’re so heroic and so good at their jobs and have found ways to deal with the trials and tribulations and the trauma and the things that they keep seeing day in and day out. They’re some of the best people I know, and for every story that you see in the news because it’s such a hot topic, there’s probably a hundred where police officers saved a life or stopped a crime, and those aren’t the things they televise. It is an issue. It’s an issue that needs to be dealt with. You know, there’s body cams and all sorts of stuff like that coming out, but I feel for the men and women on the police force that are doing a good job and that maybe sometimes, they aren’t getting the respect they deserve because of what’s going on in the media. Do you feel like the show has a responsibility or an opportunity to imitate reality with some of these stories, but also show the good side of the force? Yeah, absolutely. There is a responsibility to portray what’s going on in the current times. Chicago is one of the most violent cities in the country, and there are bad cops. That’s a fact. Actually, one of the most recent episodes deals with a crooked cop. There is a responsibility to do that and there’s an authenticity to that, but what I love about our show so much is that we also get to portray the heroic side and put them in a light that I think is deserved of our first responders. The Last Resort By: STEVEN CARVER
SPRING IS A POPULAR TIME OF YEAR TO TAKE A TRIP WHILE LEAVING TROUBLES BEHIND. THE WEATHER IS MODERATE AND MOST VACATION SPOTS ARE EMPTY, AS SCHOOL IS STILL IN SESSION. SETTING ASIDE THE ISSUE OF WHERE TO GO, THE OTHER PROBLEM THAT ARISES IS WHAT TO WEAR. TO ALLEVIATE THIS SITUATION, FASHION DESIGNERS HAVE RAMPED UP THE PRODUCTION OF RESORT COLLECTIONS THAT RESIDE BETWEEN THE TRADITIONAL SPRING AND FALL LINES.
FASHION issue - BELLOmag.com
22
Although primarily designed for fun and frolic, the target customer isn’t specific, but the basic requirements are. “Resort is for everyone,” says Kaelen Haworth, designer of the women’s fashion line, Kaelen. “People want clothing that does double and triple duty. My customer wants special things that really take her anywhere she needs to be in her life, in all seasons.” With her first resort collection presented less than a year ago, Haworth realized she couldn’t just think of sand and surf when developing her resort line. “You have to approach it from a different
23
mindset. It feels untraditional in a way, and I think you have to have a very clear understanding of what your customer wants from you in order to really do it well.” Unlike pre-fall collections that offer anything and everything (i.e. string bikinis and sable-trimmed coats), resort needs a basic range of pieces. From hot days to cold(ish) nights, collections are designed to be flexible, not restrictive. Separates that can be incorporated into an existing wardrobe are indispensable; tops, skirts and dresses are mainstays for their versatility.
“I think there are essential pieces that should be included, but they are dependent on the [designer] brand. I think the best way for me to include essentials is to define essentials as the Kaelen core pieces, what my customer is consistently wanting and buying from me.” For Kaelen’s 2015 resort line, that means clean silhouettes (with the occasional ruffle) in white and black, with the only pattern coming from a wideband stripe and an abstract floral print. One downside of a resort collection: the shorter retail life. Buy now, because it won’t be available later on...although the beaches will still be there.

THIRTEEN31: A New Jewelry Line Brings Light to the Dark By: KIMMY ERIN KERTES Emerging from the dark and into this month’s designer spotlight is Joanne Fiske’s black diamondexclusive jewelry. THIRTEEN31 was born of entrepeneur Fiske’s complete adoration for the dark, shiny, coveted stone. “From the minute I saw my first stone and started working with it, I knew this was the direction THIRTEEN31
needed to go in.” Her earrings, rings, cuffs, ear jackets, midis, and bracelets are all set in 18 karat yellow and rose gold, with some oxidized pieces for a decidely goth-meets-glam-rock style. She cheekily incorporates drug paraphanalia into her work; whether they end up being for actual use or just for kicks is entirely up to her chic
buyers. As heavy metal as she can go, however, Fiske’s dainty floating black diamond necklaces have also proven popular on Hollywood types, including Kate Mara and Jenna Dewan Tatum. Watch for THIRTEEN31’s latest pieces with black diamonds subtley inlaid into wire. It doesn’t get more flawless than that.

“Clear-cut, contemporary designs” By: STEVEN CARVER
BEING ELUSIVE CAN BE A BENEFIT TO FASHION DESIGNERS. IT CREATES AN AURA OF MYSTERY AROUND THESE CREATIVE MINDS. WITH THEIR SCHEDULES, THERE’S LITTLE TIME TO DELVE INTO THEIR THINKING PROCESS WHEN IT COMES TO PRODUCING A PROFILE. THERE’S AN INEVITABLE CHASE AND WHEN THEY TALK, IT’S IN METAPHORS. This pattern is one that industry veterans have copied for years. For the newbies, it’s a simple way to garner a level of interest while building a brand. Born and raised in Iowa, Jeffrey Dodd started his fashion career as a visual merchandiser for Ralph Lauren in Chicago and later moved to New York to attend the fashion design program at Pratt Institute. Before graduating from Pratt in 2010, Dodd co-founded the edgier ready-to-wear line, TwentyTen. While the collaboration didn’t last long (five seasons), it taught him the basics of what it takes to run a fashion business. In 2011, he joined the design team at Rachel Zoe, working in
25
design, production, styling and special projects. During his time there, he realized it was important to listen to what Zoe’s customers – and women in general – were looking for in their clothing options. And in 2013, Dodd ditched any elsuiveness and launched his eponymously-named ready-towear label that featured his trademark draping and tailoring. Like most designers in the contemporary segment, the focus is on separates for spring. Tailored jackets with rounded shoulders, slim pants and knee-length pencil skirts are the offerings for day, while the special occasion cocktail dress and sleeveless
gown show that not everyone dresses from 9 to 5. Silhouettes remain long and lean in graphic mix-and-match colors like white and black, with a touch of icy teal. The use of silk georgette, wool crepe and chiffon are meant to fall elegantly on the body rather than cling to it. And touches of fur, lace and sequins add texture and dimension to the separates. So while some designers talk in circles when describing their collection, the sharp lines of Jeffrey Dodd’s line get right to the point. It only takes a few items of clothing to say a lot about his brand.

Getting to Know
Anna Diop PHOTOS BY JANA WILLIAMS WORDS BY ALEXANDER TARAGHI
THE ACTING INDUSTRY IS A COMPLEX AND COMPETITIVE WORLD, AND WITHOUT DIRECTION AND PERSEVERANCE ONE CAN BE EASILY DISCOURAGED. A STRONG FOUNDATION AND PASSION CAN HELP, BUT BEING WELL-ROUNDED AND MAKING TIME FOR PLEASURES OUTSIDE OF WORK ARE ALSO CRUCIAL FOR LASTING SUCCESS. ACTRESS ANNA DIOP IS A SHINING EXAMPLE OF THESE CHARACTERISTICS. WITH A STAR ROLE ON THE HIGHLY POPULAR CW SHOW THE MESSENGERS AND WITH TWO NEW FILMS COMING ON THE WAY, DIOP IS CLEARLY MAKING HER MARK ON THE INDUSTRY. WHAT KEEPS HER GOING? BELLO MAG FINDS OUT HERE.
You were born in Dakar, Senegal. At what age did you move away, and what is one thing you miss from your hometown? I lived in Senegal until the age of six, then we moved to Houston. Almost all of my extended family is still in Senegal, so what I probably miss the most is family. And the beaches! Senegal’s west coast is entirely surrounded by the Atlantic, so we have some of the most beautiful
43
beaches. Muay Thai is something you recently started. How did you get involved in the sport, and why are you so drawn to it? I started studying Muay Thai two years ago for a film and I fell in love with it. It’s a combat sport that’s very high intensity. I’m not sure why I’m so drawn to it. It’s an incredible workout,
but more than that, it’s bold, fast, and unapologetic. You are working with an organization that helps blind school-aged children in Kenya. Please explain a little about the organization and how you got involved. Yes, the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, or the AIPB. The AIPB is a non-profit organization

dedicated to the prevention of blindness through programs designed to restore and protect eyesight. Several years ago I was a nanny to an adorable little girl. Her grandmother is Dr. Patricia Bath. Dr. Bath is a world renowned ophthalmologist, inventor, and founder of the AIPB. I would always ask her about the work she was doing until finally I decided to get involved. She’s been an incredible mentor to me since. And being a part of AIPB has been one of the most remarkable experiences. I’ve met children, teachers, and people who’ve inspired me so much. Traveling is a passion of yours. Where is one of your favorite places to travel, and what is next on the list? My older brother lives in this neighborhood in Hawaii called Kailua. It’s right next to the water and it’s so perfectly idyllic there. After Senegal, that’s probably my favorite place to visit. I’ll be in London this summer for a month and will do some traveling to France and Spain afterwards. It’ll be my first time in Spain, so I’m really stoked about that. At what age did you get involved with acting, and when was your first major role? 45
I fell in love with acting when I was twelve through a short play I stumbled on. My first television role was on Everybody Hates Chris. I played a character named Deidra, who was the neighborhood cool chick: always at the coolest parties, with the coolest guy, and [the girl] who Chris had a crush on. I was seventeen when I started on the show and it was so much fun.
What is one key to your success as an actor?
In which area would you like to improve as an actor?
Something About Her is a film about an improbable friendship that develops between a young struggling single mother (played by me) and a wealthy Santa Barbara socialite who’s suffering from ALS. In its essence, it’s a love story between these two women. I was so happy to have been a part of it.
In every possible area. In areas I’m probably not even aware of yet. I just always want to keep growing and be better; plateaus are my worst nightmare. You are currently acting on network TV and have a movie soon to come out. Are there any differences between acting on TV versus acting in a movie? I think the biggest difference I noticed was that TV moves much faster than film. With TV you have approximately a week and a half to film one hour, whereas in film, you have anywhere from a month to a few months to film two hours. So it just moves at a much quicker pace. TV was much more challenging for me because of that, but I’m always up for a challenge so I love it.
Perseverance. In my experience, it’s the key for success in almost all things. Something About Her is a new movie that you star in coming out this year. Can you tell us a little bit about the movie and the character that you play?
What career would you choose if you couldn’t be an actor anymore? When I was young I wanted to be a broadcast journalist. I remember watching Lisa Ling. She was young and beautiful and intelligent, and she knew Oprah, which I thought was just incredible. She would travel the world telling people’s stories and I thought that was the most amazing thing. I wanted to be just like her.

In Her Shoes:
Stefanie Fair BY: KIMMY ERIN KERTES
FORMER POP STAR, ACTRESS AND MODEL STEFANIE FAIR IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL MOM OF FOUR. FAIR GOT HER START ACTING ON PUNKY BREWSTER, MARRIED...WITH CHILDREN AND BLOSSOM, WENT ON TO START MAJOR ‘90S GIRL-GROUP WILD ORCHID (ALONG WITH FERGIE OF THE BLACK EYED PEAS), AND THEN SHIFTED INTO - AND STILL REMAINS - AN IN-DEMAND SONGWRITER. WATCH FOR STEFANIE ON BRAVO’S UPCOMING REALITY SERIES ABOUT A WEALTHY LOS ANGELES MOMMY & ME GROUP, THERE GOES THE MOTHERHOOD. HERE, THE FASHION-OBSESSED SELF-PROFESSED “VALLEY GIRL” WITH FIVE CLOSETS OFFERS A PEEK INTO HER PAST LIFE AS A MODEL FOR GUESS? AND JUST HOW FAR HER “818” ROOTS HAVE GROWN.
Let me introduce you to what my good friends call “Steffie-Style:” big hoops, big hair, and bright colors. My jeans have never not been stained, ripped, and/or shredded (which makes getting dressed as a mom of four a lot easier!), and leopard print still makes me giddy as a little girl. I go crazy for shoes (big, buckled, zippered, high and/or bright), and have been - and always will be obsessed with using fashion as my way of standing out and standing up for the powerful woman within me. It’s nothing I can hide. Born and raised in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, the ‘80s and ‘90s entirely influenced my style. So in the late ‘90s when I got together with my girl group, Wild Orchid, we were beyond ecstatic to score a deal 53
with Guess? Jeans. Before landing that deal with Guess?, I was in thrift stores and Forever 21. So to be a Guess? girl was the biggest deal, ever. Guess? girls were (and still are!) sexy and beautiful and powerful and everything that our music represented. Fergie, Renee and I wore Guess? headto-toe for years, and became part of their design process. We modeled, toured the country with them, and they designed our gowns for our formal events. It was a dream come true for this valley girl, and it launched my love of shopping, fashion, and afforded me the opportunity to start playing with who I got to wear. But I am always representing my “818” roots, and no brand, boutique or
designer is off-limits. I’m not the girl that’s going to wear the outfit on the mannequin in the window. I’m going to take a piece that I love; I’m going to find the one that speaks to me, and bring it to life in my own way. On any given day I could be rocking a Target dress with Chloe boots, and I’m proud of that. I don’t believe you have to spend a lot of money to look great, and that’s always been how I have built my wardrobe. It’s important to wear things that feel great and designer clothes, although amazing, aren’t the only way to achieve that. So I’ll keep showing up to mommy & me’s and writing sessions in a Hanes wife beater and Zara boyfriend jeans with my latest Giuseppe Zanotti heels, and know that no one will ever be guessing who Stefanie Fair is.
