FOR THE MESSENGERS STAR SHANTEL VANSANTEN, PLAYING A STRONG-WILLED AND AMBITIOUS LEADER ISN’T JUST FOR TELEVISION. AS I DISCOVERED IN OUR ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW, SHE LEADS BY EXAMPLE IN HER OWN LIFE, TOO.

Best known as Hayley’s big sister Quinn on The CW’s One Tree Hill, VanSanten can now be seen as radio astronomer Vera Buckley on the network’s freshman drama The Messengers. Shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the series follows a group of strangers, Vera included, who, following a mysterious object’s arrival on earth, are reincarnated as angels, blessed with unique powers, and summoned to stop the devil before he puts together the final puzzle pieces of Armageddon. “Initially, when I first read the script, I loved how honest [Vera] was, and how outspoken she was,” VanSanten tells me about what attracted her to the role. “It’s not very often you come across a character who’s a radio astronomer and who’s the boss. She’s intelligent and strong and smart.” The Messengers — which include a single mother (Sofia Black-D’Elia), a runaway teen (Joel Courtney), a Texan preacher (Joshua Silburn Jr.), a federal agent (JD Pardo), and a coma-ridden nurse (Anna Diop) — are each just ordinary people placed into an extraordinary situation. But it is arguably VanSanten’s Vera who guides the viewers, vicariously providing the voice of reason. Never one to accept anything at face value, Vera has a relentless 9

determination to find the answers to life’s mysteries, which she believes can always be explained through science. “She comes from a background of ‘you have a theory, and you study, and you prove it, and if not, you come up with a new theory,’” VanSanten explains. Her character’s love of science was something the Minnesota-born actress could relate to, having grown up in Houston, Texas, where she made frequent trips to NASA. “I had an amazing teacher in middle school who was really into science and got me into science,” she reveals. “It seemed to be one of my strongest classes.” If discovering spirit walking powers and having her atheist beliefs shaken weren’t enough, Vera’s world is also stirred when the devil, played by Diogo Morgado, shows her evidence that her long-lost, kidnapped son, Michael, is, in fact, alive. “It’s what becomes a driving force throughout all of this,” says VanSanten, who reminds us that a mother’s love for her child is a weapon of unparalleled power. “Of course, for Vera, there is a very selfish personal struggle that’s going on,” VanSanten says of her character, whose desperation to reunite with her son is an open wound for the devil to poke at. “But now that she has this gift, and she can walk through walls, and spy on people, I think we’re gonna see

her not use it for a lot of other reasons other than the impending apocalypse.” Still, VanSanten raises the question: “At the end of the day, if you knew somebody was alive that you hadn’t seen, would you go find them, or would you just give up?” Unlike many other prominent female characters on television, Vera isn’t limited to a love triangle, nor is she dependent on any man for validation. Her goal is simple: save her son, save the world. “In between trying to find her son, trying to figure out what’s going on, trying to stop an impending apocalypse or a horseman, it’s a lot going on,” she says, “so to think you can take on a personal, romantic life in between it all might be a little far-fetched.” VanSanten reveals that her character’s agency played a factor to the late casting of Alan Harris, Vera’s sidekick. “It’s not very often that you have a strong, outspoken female, and that there’s a man who won’t out speak her or try to take her job,” she says. “When Craig [Frank] came along, who plays Allen, I couldn’t have been more happy with the dynamics that we developed,” she comments on the duo’s fun banter. “He grounds Vera when June 2015 - BELLO

If I have any amount of notoriety, and I make a positive change in the world, that’s what I want to do with it. she goes off on these crazy tangents or when she gets really upset about something or maybe a little irrational.” VanSanten not only takes on the leadership role for her fellow messengers on the series, but she also applies that to her personal life as well, crediting her late grandmother, Doris Dooyema, who died last year, for being a tremendous influence. “When I was filming the pilot [of The Messengers], during the pilot, my grandmother passed away from lung cancer,” she says. “It was probably the most difficult decision of my entire life to decide whether to continue shooting the show and miss my grandmother’s funeral or to go to the funeral.” “I obviously continued to shoot the pilot, and I missed her funeral. I don’t, in any way, shape, or form, regret it ‘cause I feel as though everything — unlike Vera — for me, everything does happen for a reason. We were given this amazing season of a show. It’s interesting watching the pilot back because I was so emotional and had so much going on. It kind of felt like the art imitating my life and my life imitating the art.” In honor of her grandmother, VanSanten has been working with The American Lung Association initiative LUNG FORCE to raise funds for lung cancer education, awareness, and advocacy. “It evoked change in me, and it therefore has really lit a fire in me to do the same for other people, to raise awareness, to raise funds,” says VanSanten, who also reveals that she recently got her first and only tattoo — her grandmother’s name. “It’s so underfunded; I just want to do something about it. It’s a new 11

mission for me, and I carry her with me in everything I do.”

empowering other women through her story.

Through Instagram and Twitter, VanSanten chronicled her grandmother’s journey with cancer, sharing select intimate moments, starting from the day of the diagnosis. “The wonderful thing for me to have social media is that you get to decide what you want to let people in on,” she says. “You get to decide the impact you make. You get to evoke change by what you do and what you choose to put out there.”

“When I gave my speech, I just said, ‘In now way, shape, or form do I feel like a hero because I watched my grandmother fight for her life for six months,’” she recalls. “And unfortunately she lost it. But it made me aware that it’s the number one cancer killer of women, and it made me aware that the death rate has doubled; and I have to do something about it.”

She adds, “I do it because of things like this where you and I are talking, and everybody I know has somebody immediately who’s suffering from, dying, diagnosed, or has passed away from cancer. It’s this common thread that can connect us all.” Most recently, through YouTube, she shared a personal letter, addressed to the ugly, six-letter c-word. “My letter to cancer, I wrote because I was angry,” she confesses. “I do this a lot where I’ll write to something intangible. So I’ve written a letter to beauty before because I wanted to understand what beauty really was. It’s like writing a letter to an ex-lover or — it’s like another human being.” In the letter, she writes, “You may feel like you have the power over us, but we see your limits. You cannot suppress our memories or silence our courage. You cannot invade our souls, shatter our hope. You cannot cripple our love; and most of all, you cannot conquer our spirits.” Last month, LUNG FORCE honored VanSanten in New York, during National Women’s Lung Health Week, for her dedication to the cause and for

The Messengers, which debuted on April 17, has not been picked up by The CW for a second season. However, the network will air remaining episodes on Friday nights at 9 p.m. ET. “I’m definitely bummed that we didn’t get another season,” she says about the series’ premature demise. “The show opened my eyes to a lot of things and made me take a look at myself, and that’a what I hope for. I’m moving forward, but I was thankful to be able to tell Vera’s story and grateful to be a part of the show.” Towards the end of our conversation, she confirms that her battle with cancer is one she has no plans of surrendering. “I’m so happy that I’m able to make people feel that they’re not alone,” she says about the response she has received from strangers through her work with LUNG FORCE. “That’s the beautiful part of it for me. If I have any amount of notoriety, and I make a positive change in the world, that’s what I want to do with it.” So while Vera Buckley’s journey may have been short-lived, it’s evident that her real-life counterpart has already found a long-lasting, meaningful mission off-screen. LOS ANGELES IS A CITY FULL OF PEOPLE PURSUING THEIR DREAMS AND PASSIONS, AND FOR THOSE WHO STAY DEDICATED ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. IN THIS SECTION, I TAKE A QUICK PEEK INTO THE LIFE OF NICK HOUNSLOW, A MAN WHO IS TRULY TURNING HIS PASSIONS INTO REALITY. NICK HAS FOUND A WAY TO COMBINE THE THINGS HE TRULY VALUES IN LIFE, SUCH AS MODELING, PERSONAL TRAINING, AND SPIN CYCLING AND HAS TAKEN THEM TO THE NEXT LEVEL. ONE OF NICK’S MOST RECENT SUCCESSES IS LANDING A SPOT ON THE NEW E! SERIES, HOLLYWOOD CYCLE. A REALITY TV SHOW THAT GIVES A TRUE INSIDER LOOK INTO THE HIGHLY COMPETITIVE WORLD OF SPINNING.

Where are you originally from? I am from England. My father was in the Royal Air Force. I was born in a military hospital in rural Lincolnshire, England. How long have you lived in LA? I have been a permanent resident here for 5 years. What is your background in modeling? When did you get started? Was it for glamour? The money? Pure kicks? I was actually discovered, the old fashioned way, believe it or not. When I was 17, I was shopping for my school uniform with my mum and there was this photographer taking photos of me. I had no idea who they were, or what they were doing, until they approached us and introduced themselves as model scouts. It was right in the middle of Kings Road (a very busy and fashion forward intersection in London). I had no idea what it meant to be a model, but decided to give it a try. What is the most memorable photo shoot you’ve been on? Ahhhh! I have so many amazing memories and continue to have more. Each shoot is incredible in its own way, but I have to say that I had the pleasure of being chosen to shoot for L’Oreal twice in my career. The first shoot, my hair was bleached blond, they added extensions and shot me on 39

a rollercoaster in Belgium for 4 days. It appeared on TV around the world. I would have to say my second most memorable was working with Claudia Schiffer possibly one of the nicest ladies I have ever shot with. And then there was the time when I had to dance in my underwear in the snow, and ride an elephant in China. Modeling can be incredible. Did you know that one client had me hanging 50 feet in the air in a Tom Ford suit? And then I got to play polo in the Britney Spears music video “Radar” and be Hilary Duff’s abusive boyfriend in her video “Stranger”. In what ways has modeling been challenging for you, and in what ways rewarding? I have been fortunate to have worked consistently during my career. However, not knowing when or where the next job is coming from can be challenging. There is no guarantee and stability is fleeting. It can definitely take its toll mentally on anyone. I have never met model, male or female, that doesn’t question his/her own physical image from time to time. You have to keep strong. And it comes with the territory of what I signed up for. I do not know where I would be without my support system: my grandparents, parents and sister. On the flipside the rewards of the industry can help outweigh the challenges. Not only do I get to travel to some incredible locations, shoot with

some crazy talented people but I also get to give back at charity events and fashion shows. I also recently bought my first house in Los Angeles and have the industry to thank for that (and a little help from family) Has your modeling agency LA models been a good fit for you? LA models was my first agency in Los Angeles. I honestly would not still be here in LA if it wasn’t for the guidance and hard work for one phenomenal agent and lady, Crista Klayman, she has been my guardian angel in this town and 10 years later still continues to do so! She has always been there and pushed be beyond what I ever thought I was capable of. How has modeling changed other aspects about your life? It has actually an incredibly shy teenager growing up. Modeling has forced me to become more outgoing, more confident and willing to attack any problem head on. It has also for sure helped me as far as my acting goes. When you have shoot stark naked in the rain on a Paris rooftop in Winter for a major French fashion designer, it kinda prepares you for anything. When did your passion for spinning first start? I started spinning at 18 in London. When I say “started” I mean the work June 2015 - BELLO

out class I wanted to take was full and spin was the only class left. And wanting to work out, I gave it a try. Let me tell you… it kicked my butt and after 10mins I walked out. Not wanting to fail at anything! I had to conquer it and went back, and back and back. 2 months later became an instructor. When did you first get into personal training? In my early teen years I was overweight. With the help and guidance of my female rugby coach (who also happened to be my chemistry teacher) I also started swimming and later on through the process of my own transformation, figured out Personal Training was a great way to make changes to my body and others For me, personal training is a way to help others and a very flexible career that works well with my modeling. It enabled me to have a second revenue source while traveling and you can do it anywhere if you are trained properly and know what you are doing! What is one key to your success as a personal trainer and spin instructor? Well that would be telling my secrets! ;) I think empathy on a level that everyone can relate to. I was overweight. I was bullied. I did not feel comfortable in my own skin. So I know what it takes to show up, do the work and NOT quit. I may yell in class, push my students to their breaking point but it comes from a place of empathy. What is one of the biggest challenges you face on a daily basis? Not giving up. 41

“Never never never give up” Winston Churchill – it’s the only quote on my refrigerator. With there being three main instructors at the studio, do you find that your driven personalities often clash? Absolutely! We all have different opinions on how we should expand and grow for the future, but that’s what makes us the #1 cycle studio in all of Los Angeles. What is one thing that you bring to the table at Cycle House that sets you apart from the other instructors? I was recently described as ‘the glue that holds the group together’. I think there is some truth in that. Everybody at Cycle House brings his/her problems to me and then I have to go fix it all. Which can be a challenge.

Aside from the hot bodies and glamorous backdrop we are real people with real challenges and real lives. We try to be relatable as human beings that just happened to be surrounded by lots of drama.

I am also the one with the design esthetic, which is why I design all our apparel and designed the interior of the studio. What is one aspect of the Hollywood Cycle that you know viewers will be drawn to? Aside from the hot bodies and glamorous backdrop we are real people with real challenges and real lives. We try to be relatable as human beings that just happened to be surrounded by lots of drama. It’s a reality show! But I promise that we will make you laugh, cry, shout, gasp and probably, on occasion, make you want to throw things at your TV. SO GET READY AMERICA…THIS BRIT IS COMING FOR YOU!!! ;) Hollywood Cycle, Premieres July 7 on E! June 2015 - BELLO

TIMOTHY HILL IS THE BEST PLACE TO CAPTURE BOTH WATER WONDERS DIVIDED BY MAGNIFICENT MOUNTAINS. THE SPIRIT OF THE ISLAND CAN BE FELT IN THEIR WARM PEOPLE, FRESH FOOD AND COLORFUL VIEWS; AND, IF YOU WANT TO GET THE BEST OF YOUR TRIP, THEN THERE IS NO BETTER PLACE TO STAY THAN ST. KITTS MARRIOTT RESORT AND ROYAL BEACH CASINO.

Centrally located in Basseterre, the resort has everything you would expectand much more- from a 5 star spot. Top notch views of the mountains, a serene private beach, indoor and outdoor dining, on-site casino and lounge, and a full-service spa. However, what differentiates the St. Kitts Marriott from other places is their commitment to make the experience as local, and truthful, as possible. From dancing all night, to hiking in the lush rainforest, rest assured that you will not miss

anything if you put yourself in the hands of their concierge. St. Kitts Marriott has a relaxed vibe that is complemented by their tropical inspired accommodations. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted with a spectacular view of the pools and ocean, and you feel the warm breeze welcoming you into your new home away from home. What is so great is that you don’t have to leave the hotel in order to get a wonderful experience. You can

eat in your swimsuit at Bohemia Beach Bar, go for a round of afternoon golf overlooking the mountains and play or drink at the Casino! Leave Stress Behind: If what you want is to relax, then visit the Emerald Mist Spa located in the hotel. The facilities include steam room, sauna, and hot and cool tubs. I recommend the Bamboo Massage, which uses hot bamboo sticks to relax your muscles, and make you feel like walking on air. Do not leave without taking advantage of their Scrub Bar and the chance to customize your own blend with fresh spices. I loved mixing salt, rosemary and lemongrass with their signature Coco Mango bath gel. Trust me, you will feel in a tropical dream with that scent. Delight in Local Food: The St. Kitts Marriott Blu Seafood restaurant has their fruits, vegetables and seafood deliver fresh daily. True to the island style, the recipes have a mix of spices and fruits, making them flavorful and tasty. Some of my favorite dishes were the Frigate Bay Reef Lobster with

Jump Into an Adventure: St. Kitts is not the place to be shy or fearful. Au contraire, Is the perfect destination to release your energy, truly let go and be audacious. I never imagined myself going on a hike in the Rainforest, but once I was there, it was truly mesmerizing. I began my journey with a cross country trip with Greg Safaris, which is the best tour guide if you want to learn it all from a native source. Once we arrived, I felt so tiny surrounded by such immensity. The rainforest is filled with trees, streams, waterfalls, fruits, monkeys, and everything you could imagine. It was amazing to experience so much nature up close, and then munch on fruits and rum! Charred Mango Relish, the Nevis Farm Greens with Grilled Pineapples and Passion Fruit Vinaigrette, and the Bananas Foster Bread Pudding with locally-distilled Shipwreck Rum sauce. El Fredo’s Restaurant is the go-to off the beaten path choice for family inspired cuisine. The menus are changed daily and made to order. Their Caribbean-style Mutton with Green Fig and Ginger Beer is a must for those with a daring palate. Lounge and Move: Dancing all night is one of the many qualities of Kittitians. They know that a good day can only end if surrounded by friends and family, and the sounds ofthe waves next to energetic music. Carambola Beach Club, in the pristine bay of South Friars, is the ideal place to enjoy the beach during the day, and then have a gourmet dinner at night. Their extensive menu includes fresh sushi, Lobster Risotto, and Grilled Rack of Lamb; but, the winner is the Duck Breast Stuffed with Smoked Gouda and Spinach, accompanied by Fried Polenta! Spice Mill Restaurant, located in Cockleshell Beach, is another delicious spot where you can dine, drink and dance. They are masters at mixology, blending fruit and spices with spirits in such an organic way that you will not forget about it! Prepare to move your feet all night, under the light of a fire, surrounded by the water and stars. BEAUTY issue - BELLOmag.com

Snorkel and Soak in History: Visiting the exotic Nevis Island is a must. If you want to swim in crystal turquoise waters, and befriend fishes and turtles, then take a- party- catamaran from Leeward Island Charters. They bring the drinks to you, and the spot for snorkeling is secluded, but exciting. What could be better than sailing and sunbathing, while been pampered in a colorful-glove posh way? However, you cannot leave without going to Brimstone Hill. This 800-foot UNESCO World Heritage Site is a well preserved fortress, on the water on top of a series of mountains, that gives you the most indescribable views of St. Kitts and Nevis. The landscape is so incredible that you feel as if you were touching the clouds. St. Kitts has got to be one of the most interesting places for a wedding destination. Not only do you get the luxury and comfort from a resort like St. Kitts Marriott, but the cultural aspect of an island that is as unique as its scenery. The historical background that begins with the French Colonization, and is followed by the British invasion, has shaped their society and turn them into an eclectic and intriguing one. The Scenic Railway is one of those places that holds St. Kitts’ past very close and gives tourists a trip down memory lane. Built in 1912, is a piece of their story and how the sugarcane industry was their most important one. Today, tourism is one

of their most profitable and growing businesses, an with reason because is a travel bucket-list worthy place. One thing is true, their people still hold to the same strong values of kindness, hard work and joie de vivre.

TRAVEL

Picture Perfect

Paradise BY STEVEN CARVER

THE EARTH IS A RATHER LARGE PLANET, BUT THERE’S NO INFINITE AMOUNT OF LAND. WHETHER DEVELOPED, OR NOT, THERE IS LITTLE SPACE REMAINING THAT REMAINS EXOTIC, YET HOSPITABLE. FEW PLACES REMAIN THAT HAVEN’T BEEN MINED OF ALL PERSONALITY. MANY TRIPS FEEL PRE-PACKAGED; THERE ISN’T MUCH TO BE DISCOVERED. WHERE TO GO THAT’S NOT A BEACH, A TOURIST TRAP, OR A CELEBRITY HAUNT (PAPARAZZI ARE NOT CONDUCIVE TO RELAXATION)?
