Letter from the Editor From the box office to the boob tube, Summer 2015 is already shaping up to be one heckuva season, and it’s barely even begun! Films like Jurassic Park and Inside Out are breaking records at theaters as we speak, while shows like Orange Is The New Black and Wayward Pines keep us congregating at watercoolers around the country. Here in LA, July brings with it movie nights at Hollywood Forever, snow cones in Silver Lake, beach days with best buds, and of course lots and lots of skin. It also means that we at BELLO get to unveil our overstuffed July Entertainment Issue featuring heartthrob, Ian Harding, as our coverboy. In addition to my candid interview with the Pretty Little Liars star - in which I pry him for any deets on the second half of season 6 - Michelle Ganney chats with Miguel Gomez, who stars alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the highly anticipated upcoming boxing flick, Southpaw, while Alex Taraghi talks to actress and funny girl, Maribeth Monroe (currently appearing on HBO’s hilarious The Brink). Of course, we’ve still got plenty of reads for you pop culture junkies, including some of our favorite entertainment and travel picks for the month, as well as a look back at the iconic 90’s album, Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morrisette (which turns 20 this year, in case you weren’t feeling old enough) by our own Editor-At-Large, Hiko Mitsuzuka. FOREWARD So happy that summer is finally here. Even though we are all still working, it feels like everything is startting to move slower than usual, and it feels good. While sipping a fresh lemonade, we are sitting with our new contributors Morgan Stewart and the Norris Twins (Mark & Jon), planning out the new summer features and article, and getting ready to welcome even more creative people to the BELLO mag family, and I am positive you will love seeing their points of view. We are also debating on which cover to choose of the dashing Ian Harding, having a hard time narrowing down the choices. He was so great on the set during our exclusive fashion editorial and video interview. It was a perfect pre-summer day when we were shooting in the hills of Studio City, at an amazing location, where all we could think about was jumping into the beautiful pool once the shoot wrapped. I invite you to travel with us on this journey of discovery, while feeling refreshed and insipred. Ciao, Aleksandar Tomovic editor in chief

AS THE HANDSOME AND AFFABLE EZRA FITZ ON THE HIT ABC FAMILY SERIES, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, IAN HARDING HAS DEALT WITH JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING, FROM AN ILLICIT AFFAIR WITH A STUDENT TO ATTEMPTED MURDER. BUT PRIMETIME DRAMA ASIDE, THE ACTOR IS CURRENTLY HAVING ONE OF THOSE OUT-OF-SORTS MOMENTS THAT ARE MUCH MORE APROPOS OF REAL LIFE.
“I’m arriving in Palm Springs,” he reveals, as we chat on a typically sundrenched So-Cal Spring afternoon. “And I’m not particularly a hot weather person, so I get really anxious in the desert. Maybe it’s because I know there’s no water here.” Harding is in town for the Palm Springs International Shortfest, and nervousness aside, he’s quite happy to be here, even if it is only a brief visit. “A short that I did with a friend got into the festival so I’m out here for that, but then I have to shoot back to LA to film the season premiere of the show.” Time management like this is something he’s become quite adept at, having starred on the buzzy teen soap for five years now, filming 20+ episodes per season which, you can imagine, leaves little room in his schedule for anything else. Not that you’ll hear Harding complain. “I’m thankfully very busy in all the ways that I enjoy being busy,” he says. Plus, as any actor will tell you, not many projects have the legs that PLL has had. “I always knew that Pretty Little Liars had a built-in audience because the books were sort of a cult classic,” he admits, referring to Sara Shepherd’s YA literary series on which the show is based. “But I honestly just expected to do the show to polish off some college debt. I didn’t expect it to be what it became, because I immediately assume that anything I’m a part of is probably bad.” Harding has a habit of joking like this; not in a needy, fishing-for-compliments kind of way, but rather, endearingly, in a self-deprecating, relatable way, as if acknowledging that while he is incredibly handsome and talented, he’s 11
not about to get hung up on it. Well, that, and the fact that like most of us, he’s his own harshest critic. “I’ve been asked to watch the dallies or look at playback - sometimes for technical reasons, sometimes even complimentary ones - and I know this is annoying, but I never watch,” Harding explains. “Until we’re done with the project, till it’s wrapped and in the hole, I don’t ever watch because I start to get in my head and second guess things, and then I start to act from an outside perspective.” Needless to say, he’s not exactly binge watching Pretty Little Liars on the weekend. “If I’m flipping channels and happen to see my face, I don’t have to see a therapist for a couple of weeks, but I do try and avoid it.” Instead, the Heidelbergborn, Washington, D.C.-raised son of a journalist/military historian chooses to spend his off time enjoying more mature pursuits. He’s heavily involved with The Lupus Foundation Of America, having experienced the devastating and tricky disease first hand as a kid. “My mother was diagnosed multiple time with Meningitis or MS. [Doctors] couldn’t tell it was [lupus] at first, and this was in D.C. - definitely a Metropolitan area.” But the actor also admits, “I do things that I think a lot of middle-aged white guys do. I love camping. I love hiking, skiing. I’m helping to open a brewery in Virginia. I grow some of my own fruits and vegetables, and I read a ton.” It would seem that a love of the written word is to be expected when your father’s a writer, but Harding believes it goes even deeper than that. “What I inherited the most from my dad is
his love of stories. He’s able to find interesting stories and he’s an excellent storyteller and that’s on both sides of the family. His ability to captivate a room I always found really wonderful.” And speaking of stories, it’s impossible to chat with the actor and not attempt to glean at least a few deets about what’s next for Ezra in part two of season 6. But alas, Harding will only say little. “We just read the first episode in 6B where there’s a bit of a time jump, and without giving too much away, how things develop is really satisfying because we start to see more flaws and little bit more of [Ezra’s] humanity.” It’s diplomatic yet still overwhelmingly positive answers like these that Harding excels at. In fact, one would be hardpressed to find him speaking negatively about almost anything. Social media, for example. “I just don’t look at something and say I want to take a selfie with this, but you learn where you fit into certain things and I think being online and using social media for something other than purely myself is how I can justify using it.” On his sometimes grueling schedule, he explains that “the girls have it so much harder than I do because they’re there five days a week- ten to twelve hours, sometimes more - and they have whole swaths of dialogue to remember.” Not surprisingly, he’s even managed to add a positive spin to the unease he’s currently experiencing. Upon thinking further about Palm Springs, he tells me, “I bet it’s a nice town otherwise. I’m driving past some cool mid-century houses right now, so if someone was to walk out with one of those long cigarettes, I wouldn’t be surprised.” July 2015 - BELLO

Songs
To Get You Uplifted BY HIKO MITSUZUKA (@TheFirstEcho)
I’M A FIRM BELIEVER IN MUSIC THERAPY. THAT’S WHY I’VE CURATED THIS COLLECTION OF TUNES TO HELP YOU GET OUT OF WHATEVER FUNK YOU’RE IN, A SOUNDTRACK CREATED TO REMIND YOU THAT YOU’RE A FABULOUS, UNSTOPPABLE FORCE OF NATURE CAPABLE OF ANYTHING. AND WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY POSSIBILITIES TO LOOK FORWARD TO, HOW CAN YOU NOT FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF?
1. “Soar” by Christina Aguilera
I could list Xtina’s popular single “Beautiful” for its inspirational message, but that would be too obvious. Instead, this littleknown track from 2002’s Stripped encourages us to “don’t hold back,” take charge of our lives, and accept who we are. Sample lyric: “In life, there’s gonna be times when you’re feeling low, and in your mind, the insecurities seem to take control. We start to look outside ourselves for acceptance and approval…” Get ready to take flight. ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com
2. “Lovin Each Day” by Ronan Keating
This romantic British import comes from a former boy bander and packs a wallop. It’s the perfect track for those beautiful sunny days you need to experience outside.

3. “Inner Smile” by Texas
From the soundtrack to the crowd-pleasing Bend It Like Beckham comes this freeing song that will make you want to take a drive, roll down the windows, and run your hand through the wind. Destination: wherever the road leads you.
6. “Microphone” by Darin
This Swedish pop star knows how to deliver a hook, and this single from 2010 personally helped me get through a scary time in my life. I’m sure it will help you too.
7. “Let In The Sun” by Take That
Not only is this song proof that boy bands from yesteryear can make a glorious comeback, it’s a great source of inspiration, a rallying cry for everyone to open those proverbial windows and welcome every possibility that awaits.
8. “Stir It Up” by Patti LaBelle and Joss Stone
This remake of a song from the soundtrack to 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop was actually redone for the 2005 animated film Chicken Little (yes, you read that correctly). If you forget that previous sentence, then you’ll love the irresistible, sassfilled chorus of this duet from two powerhouse vocalists.
9. “Jump” by Madonna
Some people prefer 20th Century Madonna, but this thumping jam from New Millennium Madonna is an anthem for anyone willing to take the plunge – on anything. There’s a reason why they included it in Anne Hathaway’s fashion makeover montage in The Devil Wears Prada.
4. “Invincible” by Kelly Clarkson
How could I create an uplifting playlist without including everyone’s favorite Idol?
10. “No Regrets” by Robbie Williams
The title says it all, and as you go forth and conquer your world, remember that there’s no looking back. “They tell me I’m doing fine,” Robbie croons. And so will you.
5. “Sissy That Walk” by RuPaul
Sometimes we all need a drag queen to give us a muchneeded kick in the pants to get ourselves out of bed and into the world.

#2SEE SENSE8 (Netflix) In one word: Daring ! From the creators of “The Matrix” and “Babylon 5” comes this tense series in which eight people can telepathically experience each other’s lives. Amazing cast, extrordinary story telling, with 8 different cinematographic styles, refreshingly entertaining while intricatly intense, it is the perfect summer guilty pleasure. Be ready to see things the way you have never seen them before. It is simply epic but also personal... Sense8 is a mystery charged with feelings, passion, action, drama, intrigue, ... and it unfolds at the pace of a symphony in three acts.
#2CARRY Satoshi Fujiwara for Issey Miyake F/W 2015 What do you get when you mix some amazing grotesque art (by Kobeborn, Berlin Based photographer) with a fashion brand Issey Miyake? As Stella Succi would discrabe it, “ pinful, dramatic and sensitive”, and I would say very creative and unique. The particular photos used here, collectively titled “Code Unknown,” were inspired by Austrian director Michael Haneke‘s film of the same name. EMILIO PUCCI FOR PHILIPPE STARCK’S KARTELL ARMCHAIR
Never Ending Summer- The Dreamy Paintings And Ceramics Of Dan McCarthy
“GHOST DRAWINGS” by SIMON SCHUBERT
It is for Queens and Kings in all of us. The ultimate seating experience. Created by Emilio Pucci (as part of an ongoing partnership with Kartel), this redesigned Philippe Starck armchair, gives new meaing to the word throne (#GOT anyone?). The fashion house has designed an original print to celebrate Expo Milan 2015.
Dan McCarthy “dreamscapes” are liberating, and poetic. His intention is to create memory, so it is not about the details but rather a feeling of freedom and comfort. His pastel tones do remind us of a Never Ending Summer here in California.
What if you could draw enteriors of European buildings without a pen ? That is what Simon Schubert has done by only folding the paper, creating the forms and shadows, and making you feel like you are in some version of a ghost town. It is surprisingly strong considering the absence of everything, and it reminds me of fading memries.

#2RIDE
Michael Massaia’s Desolation And Dreams
When you can not get enough of Fast and Furious, you can actually now experience it at Universal Studio Hollywood. The new ride: Fast & Furious Supercharged is made of power, speed, action and is supposed to bring you the adrenalin that actors feel while filming the movie... Ready to ride ?
Those haunting Photographs Of Abandoned Amusement Parks, created by New Jersey photographer Michael Massaia, will definitelly cool down your summer, by bringing a sense of isolation, desolation, and mystery. 23

The joy of travelling around the world brings with it the eclectic experiences of world society, the diverse patterns and definitions of life that people live by day-to-day.
I grew up in a small country village in the heart of the Cotswolds, southwest England, a beautiful part of the world. I’d walk 2 miles to school every morning, stepping out of my front

Since I finished formal education, and entered the ‘real’ world, I have really begun to realize what the world is about and enjoy days experimenting along this benchmark continuum of daydreams, nightmares, and everything in between. When I was a student, I used to spend my days procrastinating online, reading travel blogs, lifestyle columns and worldy articles about the 10 best ways to find happiness, and the like, all the while trying to figure out how this well oiled machine we call earth, worked. I’ve learned that living in different parts of the world is one of the best ways to figure this out. overhear people conversing about that work-life balance, petering on the edge of work-work-work throughout their entire existence. I often stand back and ask myself the same question, not quite figuring out how society can be formed of such a culture; after all, we are only given one life, why spend it worrying, stressing, and working ridiculous schedules? It doesn’t make sense to me anyway. Westminster, London, England With my roots coming from the depths of conservative England, where people daren’t speak out of turn, talk to strangers or even honk their horn whilst driving, living in Los Angeles sure is an eye-opening experience. that one day, just one day, they will get that break in front of the camera, to the actor-turned tour-guide who now spends his life showing tourists around the city of dreams. There is but one thing everyone I’ve met here has in common; a lifetime of stories to tell. That in itself is worth every dime, penny, and ounce of effort through the struggle. We go to our graves with our memories, experiences, and thoughts about how our lives have panned out, not our Louboutins or Platinum American Express credit cards. At the age of 28, I have realized early on in my life what values to live by, and whom I should stick by. I was once told by a professor of mine whilst studying my Masters degree at the University of Bath in the UK, Dr. Ian Colville, “if there is one thing in life you’ll need, it’s a map. It doesn’t need

26
to be a good map, or a complicated one, it just needs to have an origin, and a destination, any old map will do”. Dr Colville told me of a story about a platoon of Hungarian soldiers who got lost in the mountains of the Alps in France. At their deepest moment of despair, one of them found a map in his pocket, and using it, they all got home safely. It later transpired that the map was not of the French Alps, but of the Spanish Pyrenees mountains. The moral of the story is that when you are lost, any old map will do. A few years later, this has resonated with me more than ever. I’ve come to realize, as you venture through life’s peaks and troughs, successes and disappointments, joys and losses, you just need a vision for your own happiness, the knowledge of what makes you feel good, and the diligence 27
to take risks. The route you take is less important. As I meet more and more people here in Los Angeles, I’ve realized how many people are lost in their own lives, how many people have been lost in their lives, and how many people are always lost in their lives. But once that lightbulb switched on, I began to realize an important facet of my own life; it is within these treasured lost moments in life that one finds the most joy, the most fulfillment, and the most contentment. Without these moments, life becomes a shallow world of routine reproduction, and deprived appreciation. Strive for progress, not perfection. A gentleman defines himself not by his mastery over others, but by his mastery over who he used to be.

SINCE MIGUEL GOMEZ FIRST HIT OUR SCREENS IN 2011 HIS ACTING VENTURES HAVE GONE FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH. FROM PLAYING RAMON IN THE COMEDY DRAMA LOUIE TO JAKE IN THE DOMINO EFFECT AND AUGUSTIN IN FX’S THE STRAIN, GOMEZ HAS COME A LONG WAY. HOWEVER, HIS MOST RECENT SUCCESS IS HIS UPCOMING ROLE AS MIGUEL ESCOBAR ALONGSIDE JAKE GYLLENHAAL IN THE GREATLY ANTICIPATED BLOCKBUSTER, SOUTHPAW, DIRECTED BY ANTOINE FUQUA. GOMEZ PLAYS THE NOTORIOUS RIVAL IN THIS EPIC BOXING BATTLE AGAINST HIS OPPONENT BILLY HOPE, PLAYED BY GYLLENHAAL.
The sheer grit and vulnerability of Southpaw was an attractive combination for Gomez. “Yeah, it was a lot of fun because we had a really intense training regime; we trained every day for six, seven hours.” Expanding on this, he adds, “when you get into it and you’re in the moment, things happen and you just have to go with it. You can feel the intensity of the film on set. It was difficult at times but ultimately I think you’ll see it all in the film, the hard work, the dedication and the pain of what happened”. Jake Gyllenhaal is known for his down to earth persona, his passionate acting and general positive aura. So, in spite of their characters’ conflicts, Gomez had nothing but praise for his fellow co-star. “He’s a great guy. First and foremost he’s a great person. He’s got a really good heart and I learnt so much from him as far as being a man and also as an actor, watching how dedicated he is and how willing he is to go wherever the scene takes you. I’m sort of the same way so we have a lot of trust, respect and love for each other”. It seems their strong bromance enabled them to really go the distance… “We were just able to experiment and take it all the way, you know truly get angry, truly get emotional and know that we were in the same place. We had a great leader with Antoine directing us; very very safe place to work in even though a lot of the stuff we were doing was really 31
dangerous. We’d get hit all the time, he’d hit me and I’d hit him by accident. It was just in the moment, nothing was on purpose. It actually added to the feel and the drama of the picture”. Gomez’ admiration and respect certainly didn’t stop there. Canadian sweetheart Rachel McAdams has won hearts across the nation, no one as much as Gomez it seems. “Yeah Rachel McAdams is beautiful, it’s hard not to fall in love with her, just her personality and who she is, anybody she talks to you can feel how genuine she is. It’s just her smile and who she is, it’s amazing”. And of course who could forget the legendary Forest Whitaker, “Forest Whitaker is an incredible actor and so watching him and how seriously he takes his craft, really inspired me to sort of see it that way. I’ve learnt a lot from everybody”. From Miguel Gomez to Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker, Naomie Harris, 50 Cent and Rita Ora, this unparalleled cast is sure to produce something great, especially given their close harmony. “We all put our heart and soul into it. I’m just excited to see how people receive it, yeah really just excited more than nervous”. To see this talented ensemble in motion you won’t have to wait long as the film arrives in theatres on July 24th 2015. Power, heartache, vulnerability, action and drama – it’s a true Hollywood chartbuster. July 2015 - BELLO

THE MISSION INN:
Hollywood’s Weekend Getaway BY SCOTT YOUNGBAUER (@oscarscott)
RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA MAY NOT BE THE FIRST PLACE THAT COMES TO MIND WHEN THINKING OF A WEEKEND GETAWAY, BUT IT FEATURES ONE OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’S BEST-KEPT SECRETS: THE MISSION INN.
one of the early celebrities to stay at the Inn. Other famous guests that have passed through the lobby through the years have been Paul Newman, Drew Barrymore, Rachel Welch, and Barbara Streisand. Arnold Schwarzenegger stayed at the inn during his tenure as the Governor of California. Gone with the Wind premièred next door to the public at the Fox Theater in 1939, and an impressive number of US presidents have visited throughout the years.
Just a mere hour from Los Angeles, the historic hotel is tucked away in the heart of the Inland Empire, occupying a full city block in Riverside’s quaint downtown area. The AAA FourDiamond-rated Mission Inn Hotel and Spa has welcomed guests since it first opened in 1876, first run by Frank Augustus Miller and his family. Miller merged his love for Mission Revival, Spanish Gothic, and Mediterranean architecture to create one of the most uniquely designed hotels in the America. Stepping under the grand archway of the Mission Inn is like traveling back in time where it evokes the Romanism of what it must have been like to travel. When you came to an old hotel with steam trunks in tout, cares left behind, the weekend getaway was always more ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com
about the journey. The Mission Inn was once the retreat for movie stars such as W.C Fields, Clark Gable, Bette Davis (who was married at the Inn in 1945), and Judy Garland in the golden age of Hollywood. Harry Houdini is said to be
After its heyday in the 1930s and 1940s, a number of owners and repeated bankruptcies brought the hotel to near demolition. It stayed vacant for many years before a seven-year a renovation saved it during the 1980s where the Mission Inn’s opulence was restored that no doubt would have made Miller proud. Having lived in California for only five years, a newbie as California natives

are concerned, I have never quite had a reason to journey to the Inland Empire until I made my way to Riverside to be treated by the Mission Inn. Accompanied by my editor Hiko Mitsuzuka we had our run of the place for the afternoon. Needless to say our jaws dropped upon pulling the car up to the valet. Starting with high noon tea is a good way to start the day, and we were waited on by our adorable server Taylor. (Superb customer service no doubt is one of Mission Inn’s staples.) We enjoyed a delicious pot of tea, and gourmet sandwiches before went onto a fascinating docent tour of the grounds of the Mission. Tidbits of the tours included the repurposed objects Frank Miller put around the hotel from the unique fences to the theme of antique belles found throughout. There’s an impressive art collection found throughout, and we dropped by the Presidential Lounge for a quick cocktail. The Presidential Lounge features portraits of all of the Heads of State that have passed through the hotel- Richard Nixon was actually married inside of the bar to his wife Pat. We even got to chat with the resident parrot that can be found outside of the main entrance greeting guests as they walk in. As one of the most sought out wedding venues to get married in Southern California is the St. Francis of Assisi
Lobby chapel. The chapel features stunning Tiffany windows that were gifted to Miller by Louis Comfort Tiffany himself. After taking the tour we enjoyed the rest of the evening enjoying dinner at Duane’s steakhouse, and a few glasses of wine. The last stop of the night included a walk around the Spanish Patio that is best seen in at nighttime surrounded by twinkling lights. A stay at the Inn ranges from $119.00 and up. Not that bad of a price tag considering the luxury, and history of the place. If you’re feeling fancy you can stay in the Superior President Suite, which overlooks the gorgeous Spanish Patio. The Mission offers a variety of rooms to accommodate the
causal traveler looking for a weekend getaway on a budget, to those looking to live it up like old film stars that once walked the halls. It’s interesting how under the radar The Mission Inn flies for residents out of Riverside, and how this amazing weekend place has stood the test of time for decades. I’m most definitely looking forward to returning for a longer stay!
NOT TO BE MISSED Casey’s Cupcakes - An explosion of deliciousness awaits you at this charming cupcake boutique run by Barbie’s doppelganger, Casey Reinhardt. We highly recommend the Rockin’ Red Velvet. Kelly’s Spa - Pamper yourself while surrounded by the Spanish Missionstyle surroundings. It was ranked in the Top 10 on Condé Nast Traveler’s Top 50 Hotel Spas in the United States. Festival of Lights - People come from around the world to see the Mission Inn deck the halls in style.

ALTHOUGH MARIBETH MONROE IS NO STRANGER TO FILM, HER PHOTO SHOOT EXPERIENCE IS SLIM AND SHE’D LIKE TO KEEP IT THAT WAY. “I WOULD RATHER PLAY A ONE WOMEN HAMLET NAKED, THAN TO TAKE PART IN A FASHION PHOTO SHOOT.” MODESTY ASIDE, MERIBETH WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME LOOKING BAD IN ANY SITUATION GIVEN HER VIBRANT PERSONALITY. LUCKILY, IF SHE DID HAVE TO PLAY A ONE WOMAN HAMLET, HER THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE DATES BACK TO HER HIGH SCHOOL DAYS.
Theater, however, is just one of Monroe’s talents. It is improvisational comedy that has led Maribeth to her more recent successes. Her career started its climb in 1999 after she moved to Detroit. While working as a cocktail waitress at The Second City, an improvisational comedy enterprise, she was pulled on stage and given the opportunity to improvise. It turns out they were auditioning for new talent and Maribeth was in the right place at the right time. Her career as a comedian fortuitously took off, placing her on the main stage at The Second City Chicago from 2003 to 2006. It was this success that compelled her to bring her talent to LA. One of her first gigs in Hollywood was with the Comedy Central hit, Workaholics, taking on the character of a sad and disgruntled woman by the name of Alice Murphy. Ironically, while Maribeth is caring and energetic by nature, she was able to completely connect with the role of Alice, and continued to play similar characters, including that of her next big appearance on two episodes of Parks and Recreation. 41
You can watch Maribeth’s most recent work on the new HBO series, The Brink; a dark political comedy surrounding a geopolitical crisis, similar to a potential World War III situation, with Tim Robins and Jack Black as the leads. Tim Robins plays the Secretary of State, with Maribeth playing his very capable and under appreciated Chief of Staff. Her character does everything the Secretary of State would do but better, and in heels. She is a type-A career committed woman whose entire life revolves around taking care of Robin’s character, an eccentric and oftentimes delinquent politician. She describes her role as a grown man’s babysitter, solving problems without receiving any of the glory. Maribeth is a woman whose personality shines both on and off camera, and her past and present success can be attributed to the fact that she has remained true to herself in an industry that can demand unwarranted change. Do yourself a favor and check her out on The Brink, Sunday nights on HBO, beginning June 21st.

BRAD’S BUZZ
BY BRAD LIBERTI, ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR twitter and instagram @bjl233
1. Self/less What is the cost of youth and vitality? Sir Ben Kingsley finds out in this heartracing, thought-provoking thriller from director and visual master Tarsem Singh. Despite immeasurable wealth - and an apartment that would make Trump jealous - NYC financier Damian (Kingsley) finds himself powerless in his escalating battle against cancer. Cue the mysterious Albright (Matthew Goode), an elegant if cagey gent toting a radical procedure that promises to not only solve his immediate problem, but to also fit his consciousness with the robust bod of one Ryan Reynolds. Sounds heady and it is, in all the right ways. Sharing the same DNA with the likes of writer/director du jour Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Never Let Me Go) and the equally brilliant BBC series Black Mirror, Self/less examines our paranoid, co-dependent, slightly skewed relationship with technology, offering up a scary glimpse into a future that isn’t as far away as we think.
2. Trainwreck Amy Shumer + Judd Apatow = the best adult comedy since Bridesmaids. Hands down what I’m most looking forward to this summer.
3. Magic Mike XXL The boys are back and roadtripping to Myrtle Beach for- oh you know, just your average stripper convention. With all sorts of surprise guests and enough musical numbers to please the hungry masses, just think of this as Pitch Perfect 2 but with strippers.
4. Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp Who knows how they did it, but somehow creators Davis Wain and Michael Showalter managed to wrangle the entire cast of their 2001 straight-to-video indie turned cult comedy classic for this 8 episode Netlfix series. That includes Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Jason Schwartzman, Ken Maruno, Molly Shannon, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Meloni, and Janeane Garofalo, just to name a few. Yeah, I’d hate to have been the scheduler on that one.
5. “Cheerleader”- OMI An easy breezy Caribbean ditty about a girl whose truly ride or die. How could you not love this?

‘JAGGED LITTLE PILL’ TURNS 20 Hiko Mitsuzuka (@TheFirstEcho) gets a little personal and looks back at Alanis Morissette’s iconic album that dropped two decades ago.
IT WAS AN ALBUM THAT DEFINED A DECADE, TURNED FEMALE ANGST INTO BRILLIANT POP ARTISTRY, AND SPARKED AN OBSESSION WITHIN ME THAT WOULD LAST THROUGHOUT MOST OF A DECADE.
Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill was released in the U.S. in June of 1995, but I wasn’t introduced to the album until months later, sitting in religion class during my sophomore year at Iona Prep in New Rochelle, N.Y. In what was clearly a pre-social-media, pre-file-sharing era, I had to find out about it through my friend James. He
47
passed along the CD to me as if it were a handwritten note of major importance. (Texting? What’s that?) “Oh my God, you have to listen to this,” he told me. I brought it home later that day with the intention of popping it into my player
and making a tape cassette copy of it. But little did I know how hard I would fall for this dynamic collection of music and lyrics that eventually impacted the soundtrack of my adolescence. This officially marked the end of an era in which my musical pleasures were often derived from hits on the Adult Contemporary charts. (There was
July 2015 - BELLO
only so much Amy Grant I could play. Farewell, Michael Bolton.) I immediately knew I had to run out to Sam Goody (*kids, that’s the name of a brick-andmortar store that sold physical, tangible copies of albums) and buy my own copy of Jagged Little Pill. I had already heard of “You Oughta Know.” To my 15-year-old ears, it was that aggressive song about an angry chick who hated Full House actor Dave Coulier. (Did she really give him a BJ in a theater?) The single was constantly played on New York’s Z100, back when it was known for its heavy altrock rotation -- before Top 40 turned bubblegum. But then I discovered Alanis’s other offerings on the album. “All I Really Want” was the perfect kick-off, a wish list of things to help her navigate a world full of bullshit and bad lovers. “Hand In My Pocket” was enjoyable for its playful riff on contradictions... and seeing my mother’s reaction to the unedited version. (Yep, she said “chicken shit.”) “Head Over Feet” was so 90s, simply because of its glorious harmonica solo. “Ironic” was just that: a roll call of un-ironic scenarios designed to screw up your life and teach you a few lessons. “Mary Jane” was a painfully poignant plea for help, an ode to anyone who’s ever felt lost and hopeless. “Right You Through” was a jarring, spit-in-your-face response to one of many dudes who done her wrong. (“You didn’t think I’d show with my army and this ammunition on my back?”) “Not The Doctor” was great for its unflinching stance on women’s roles in relationships...and the world. And in the hidden, a capella track “Your House,” never has heartbreak and anguish felt so urgent, so real, so palpable. But then there’s my favorite track of the bunch, “You Learn,” a self-helpful slice of pop-rock that became my Summer of 1996 anthem. It remains as one of my all-time favorite songs. ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com
Two decades later, “classic” is an obvious word that belongs to Jagged Little Pill. “Classic” because its messages are timeless, its lyrical structure is still fresh, innovative, and daring, and its impact has yet to be duplicated. And best of all? The songs on this album still hold up beautifully. Two decades later, “classic” is an obvious word that belongs to Jagged Little Pill. “Classic” because its messages are timeless, its lyrical structure is still fresh, innovative, and daring, and its impact has yet to be duplicated. (Well, maybe you could make a comparative argument for Adele’s 21 from 2011.) Alanis Morissette was also the first musician whose work punctuated defining chapters of my life, an artist who seemed to be there every challenging step of the way. JLP helped me get through the rest of my high school years. Her follow-up, Supposed
Former Infatuation Junkie, helped me get through my first year of college. Under Rug Swept helped me face the realities of a post-collegiate life. And So-Called Chaos arrived just in time to help me deal with a family crisis: my father’s stroke. Needless to say, this month calls for some celebration. If you happen to hear any of the aforementioned tracks being blared on the streets of Los Angeles, you’ll most likely find me in my little Scion hatchback, waiting at a red light, lip-syncing for my life, and unapologetically basking in the glow of some 90s nostalgia. Happy 20th. 48
