Letter from the Editor Last year, we released our very first Sexy Issue, and it became one of our most read issues of 2014. Representing this year’s Sexy Issue, we have the very talented and amazing Jennette McCurdy. While on set, she recieved the most amazing news about her newest show, Netflix’s hit series Between, adding more energy to the already energetic set that day. Also, for the first time, our Executive Director, Leslie Alejandro photographed McCurdy’s cover shoot tandem with me, making the collaboration an even more creative exepeince. With the temperatures rising this summer all over the world, I must say that when we did this photo shoot in Downtown Los Angeles, it made it difficult to stay cool. We anticipate you’ll feel this heat when you see this cover editorial we shot for you.

But there is more to this issue than McCurdy’s beautiful feature, we invite you to discover even more sexiness and summer within the context of our pages. Please let us know what you think by sending us your thoughts by mentioning and tagging @BELLOmag. Ciao, Aleksandar Tomovic, Bello Mag Editor in Chief

If you ask us, there’s no sexier time of year than the sultry, long days of mid-summer. So it makes perfect sense that we pack this issue with sexy summer fashion and some of our editors’ most seductive secrets, topping it all off with our sexiest cover spread. This issue’s captivating cover features none other than the delightful Jennette McCurdy: a talented young lady who personifies smart, funny, beautiful, and dare we say, sexy. Her free-spirited charm and down-to-earth vitality make for the perfect balance between sweet and savory. Jennette’s all-around allure reminds us that sexiness is not just about outward appearances--it’s about humility as much as it’s about confidence, intellect as much as beauty, and compassion as much as passion. For all these reasons and more, we are exceedingly proud to bring you our second annual Sexy Issue and we thank you all for your ongoing suggestions and ideas. We thrive on our readers’ input and would love to hear from you--what do you consider sexy? Be sure to follow us and tell us what you think @BELLOmag (Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Pinterest, and more). We wish you a sultry and sexy summer, Aleksandar Tomovic (Editor in Chief) and Leslie Alejandro (Executive Director)

COVER STORY

Jennette McCurdy is All Grown Up BY MICHELLE GANNEY PHOTOS BY ALEKSANDAR TOMOVIC AND LESLIE ALEJANDRO

NICKELODEON HAS LONG BEEN AN FRUITFUL PLATFORM FOR BUDDING YOUNG ACTORS, SO IT IS NO WONDER THAT, THIS POWERHOUSE OF YOUTH PROGRAMMING HAS ONCE AGAIN PRODUCED SOME SERIOUS TALENT IN THE FORM OF JENNETTE MCCURDY. HER LIST OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS SEEMS ENDLESS: ACTOR, PRODUCER, SCREENWRITER, SINGER AND SONGWRITER, AND MORE. The California-born ingenue has been in the industry for over seventeen years, which shouldn’t really come as a surprise given her already hefty and growing résumé. Fans have long enjoyed her diverse roles in iCarly, Sam & Cat, Victorious, Zoey 101 and most recently the acclaimed new Netflix/City series, Between. Early creative influences are usually the catalyst for later stardom, this was certainly the case for talented McCurdy, who was raised on a healthy diet of ubiquitous pop-culture television and film. “I grew up watching a lot of fun 80’s movies, 70’s sitcom reruns, and SNL, so that’s where I found a lot of inspiration”. It’s easy to see where McCurdy, with her infectious sense of humor and penchant for comedic roles, found her particular voice. With so many gifted actors and performers in Hollywood, prospective cast member lists can seem like 9

overwhelming rosters of A-list talent. McCurdy however shows maturity beyond her twenty-three years and calmly reveals that she has found her niche in the industry. After revealing that Josh Gad would be her “dream co-star”, she also divulged some notable sources of inspiration, including “Inside Amy Schumer, Conan [O’Brien], and anything Tina Fey does”. In spite of McCurdy’s relaxed confidence, she admitted that working in Hollywood today can sometimes feel like an emotional rollercoaster, “I think of it [acting] as a long-term relationship. It has its ups and downs but it can potentially be very challenging, entertaining, and rewarding”. It’s this mature perspective and downto-earth work ethic that contributes to McCurdy’s genuine appeal, and why ehe enjoys a loyal following of dedicated fans. McCurdy is proud to maintain an active Twitter feed as her primary way to bond with her devoted

fan base. “I love that fans have the opportunity to connect with the artists as people, as opposed to the artists as artists”. Of course, like any amicable young starlet, McCurdy also admits to relishing other aspects of the job as well, “I like red carpets if I really like the outfit I’m wearing and am excited for people to see it. I like events if they’re movie premieres for movies I’m excited to see or if they are events I am passionate about”. If it’s true that ‘less is more’, then it seems clear that Jennette McCurdy’s effortless and uncomplicated approach to life is the secret to her success. After all, her personal mantra is to simply “have fun and work hard”. Judging by her humorous tweets, her endearing Instagram posts and her genuinely easy-going nature, it seems McCurdy’s mantra is something to replicate. “It’s simple but effective”. LOOKS

Aren’t Everything* *Believe us, we’re models

BY MARK AND JON NORRIS

FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS, WE HAVE BOTH BEEN MODELS. STARTING OFF BEING SCOUTED ON SPRING BREAK BY A MODEL SCOUT WHO INTRODUCED US TO THE INDUSTRY’S TOP MODELLING AGENCIES, FORD MODELS NYC AND WILHELMINA MODELS. Imagine, if you will, a big open spaced room, painted entirely white (much like an art gallery space) with two chairs in the middle painted white, facing each other, with you sitting in one of them not knowing what to expect next. By contemporary definition, an extremely good-looking person walks in to the room, highly stylized, with their hair pruned to the most precise detail. The person stands opposite you for 1 minute, whilst you write 5 words on a piece of blank paper that describes him or her, in your opinion. They then walk out of the room. Then, another person enters the room, wearing clothing that would be described by ‘normal’ definition as an ‘average joe’ kind of style, you know, hair relaxed stroke messy kind of thing. A blank canvas in comparison to the previous person you had the pleasure of meeting. The person stands opposite you, whilst you (again) write your 5 words down. The person exits after the minute is up. You realize when writing your second description that the second person is the same person who just came in to the room the first time, however, you seem to be writing completely different words on the description. It feels awkward, and kind of wrong actually. Image is powerful, but also, image is superficial. That person just transformed the way you thought SEXY issue - BELLOmag.com

of them in a mere few seconds. Of course, barring prosthetic surgery and cosmetic products we can buy, there is very little we can do to change the way we look, and though it is superficial and immutable, it has a huge impact on our daily lives. We wanted to run through a few questions that we, as models, have been asked a thousand times, and answer them with a twist…

The first one is, how did you become a model? And the answer we all give continuously is, “I got scouted”. But that actually means nothing in reality. The real reason we became models, is because we won a genetic lottery that we have all been taking advantage of since. We are recipients of a legacy, a legacy that has been created over the past few centuries. A legacy that defines beauty not just as health, vitality and youth, but also as tall slender figures, white skin, masculinity, and femininity. Now, there will be some of you reading this, and saying to yourselves, what about Naomi Campbell, Tyson Beckford, Tyra Banks et al. And whilst I commend you on your model knowledge, its still an overriding facet that white models made up 80% of catwalks around the world in 2014. It is slowly improving, decreasing 6% from six years ago, but still.

The next question is, how can I become a model when I grow up? The answer I want to give people is, why? Why would you want to be a model when you can be anything you want to be? You can aspire to be the next president of the United States, a scientist who travels in to space, the inventor of the next Facebook, or a charity worker that helps the beauty of our environment that we are handed for free, from generation to generation, to be kept alive. Or a million other things that don’t require you to be born with flawless genes. Saying you want to become a model when you grow up is akin to saying “I want to win the lottery powerball when I grow up”. It’s out of your control. It’s an amazing life Photo by Geovanni Martins

experience, however long or short it lasts, but it’s not a career path. I could demonstrate all the model knowledge you will need in a mere 10 seconds. It doesn’t do much for your resume when you want to forge a real career path for yourself. When you have an education behind you, you have gotten two or three masters degrees like we have, but your resume reads “Underwear Model – 3 years”, interviewers give you a funny look.

Another question is, what is it like to be a model? People expect the answer to be “if you have an amazing complexion, cheek bones that will carve a piece of meat perfectly, shinier hair, and eat-yourheart-out eyes, you will be happier, and your reality will be unexplainably amazing”. I have heard answers multiple times from models that point in this direction, “its amazing to travel, meet new people, and work in places I 19

dream about” because this, in reality, is what we all say when asked that question behind the scenes at a runway show, or photoshoot. In reality, those things are true, but what they don’t tell you, the thing that nobody will say in an interview, is that we are all insecure. And we are all insecure because we have to think about what we look like every day of our lives. We walk in to a casting room, and merely get judged on what we look like. Photographers, model casting directors and agents will give you the ‘eyes treatment’, look you up and down, as if you are an object. That’s the stark reality of the industry. The sad and honest truth is that the models that you see who have eyes like a beacon, the whitest teeth, cheekbones like mountains, are a few inches taller than you, a stomach that will grate cheese, hair that shines so bright and a flawless complexion, are probably the most physically insecure

people on this planet. Now, its been kind of difficult writing this piece, it feels somewhat hypocritical, because we have received a lot of the attention and success based on a deck of cards that was stacked in our favor. It’s also somewhat difficult to say…“and that doesn’t always make me happy”. But one thing I hope it does to the people that read it, is unpack a legacy of truths surrounding this industry and society as a whole. The superficial realities we all live with, day-today, that most people take as their benchmark for success, happiness, and a gold standard to strive for. To close, I hope we can all acknowledge the power of image in our perceived successes, and our perceived failures. La Vida es Bella What your 20’s teach you BY JON NORRIS | Instagram: @The_Norris_Twins

A YEAR OR TWO AGO, I WAS ON A COMMERCIAL SHOOT FOR A WELL KNOWN FASHION BRAND SAT EATING LUNCH WITH THE CREW AND THE OTHER ACTORS, DOGS INCLUDED. IT WAS AN AVERAGE AUGUST DAY IN LONDON, WARM BUT RAIN WASN’T TOO FAR AWAY. I WAS QUITE LATE TO ARRIVE, SO I PITCHED UP ON THE END OF A TABLE, THE CRUNCHING SOUND OF LETTUCE LEAVES AND CROUTONS INCESSANT.

A few minutes went by and we started to chat, it was the make-up artist’s birthday, she turned 33 that day. One particular thing she said to us all, has stuck in my mind ever since, when asked how she feels about turning 33, ‘wonderful’ she said, ‘I never wish I was 20 something anymore, I learned so much in my 20’s, I’m now 33 and I know who I am and what I want in my life, its what my 20’s taught me’. Granted, some of us learn this fact faster than others, but ever since that day, those words have been carried along with me, and I believe they could well be loosely true.

effect on the next protégé, well hopefully most of us do anyway.

The lesson of give and take, for example - isn’t it true that we don’t know what we’ve lost until it’s gone? Appreciation certainly follows a loss. Losing a girlfriend or boyfriend, perhaps ‘our first love’ has a lasting impact on our lives and no doubt impacts our next relationship - just like when a girl comes around unexpectedly and happens to be ‘the one’ but you unconsciously take more than you give and you lose what you thought was forever. This probably happens in your 20’s but you learn, you adapt and you move on in positive reflection of this experience and its

It is impossible to describe the pain you absorb within the coming weeks and months of a hard breakup but quite unexpectedly, it turns out to be a good thing; a positive experience that cultivates your self-awareness and the notion that life waits for nobody, its sink or swim out there, armbands permitting.

SEXY issue - BELLOmag.com

The time versus patience scenario, it can be our biggest friend or our worst enemy, but the highs and lows of finding your feet in life will probably let this be known to you. Time flies by when you are content and happy, you need more hours in the day to do it all, but when you need something to happen right now, an hour seems like a day and a day seems like a year, and we become increasingly impatient much like that first love break-up.

Cornell psychology professor Thomas Gilovich interestingly suggests that experiences bring people more happiness than do possessions, a fact I believe to be true. Waiting for an experience apparently elicits more

“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

happiness and excitement than waiting for a material good which is shrouded in impatience rather than anticipation, true right? I believe this is something we learn growing up, life is about the experiences you take and enjoy, and not so much about what you buy over the years. Essentially, when you can’t live in a moment, they say it’s best to live in anticipation of an experience. Experiential purchases like trips, concerts, and movies, tend to trump material purchases because the utility of buying anything really starts accruing before you buy it. 28

“Strob-Con” Is The Sexiest Makeup Trend of the Season BY DEE TRILLO Lifestyle and Travel Editor| Dee@BelloMag.com| @HauteFrugalista

CONTOURING IS ONE OF THOSE MAKEUP TRENDS THAT SEEMS HERE TO STAY. BETWEEN ITS UBIQUITOUS CELEBRITY FOLLOWING AND THE FACT THAT IT’S THE PERFECT WAY TO CREATE CAMERA-PERFECT FEATURES, THIS TECHNIQUE HAS SATURATED BOTH THE MAKEUP MARKET AND OUR SOCIAL MEDIA FEEDS. HOWEVER, THERE IS A NEW WAY TO CREATE AN INSTANTLY FLAWLESS COMPLEXION WITHOUT THE COMMON PITFALLS OF OVERDONE CONTOURING. The idea is to mix a light-capturing technique called “strobing” with traditional contouring in order to accomplish the perfect finish. Contouring focuses on sculpting and deepening and shadowing key facial areas like the jawline and hollows of cheeks, while strobing concentrates on bringing and reflecting light onto the most prominent features. This clever interplay of strobing and contouring (or, the “Strob-Con” combo, as I like to call it), is a great way to try something new and transition your makeup into a sexy summery look. However, every individual face shape is different. So before jumping on the triangle-shaped cookiecutter contouring bandwagon, it’s worth taking stock of your best angles and strongest features in order to best make them shine. Evaluate the symmetry of your face and assess the features that you want to emphasize--or de-emphasize for that matter. Use this handy guide to identify your strengths and direct you towards where to apply the lowlight and/or highlight colors in order to best complement your unique facial features. Always begin with a trusted SPF moisturizer to ensure that your skin is nourished and protected from the sun. Depending on your skin type, from there you can consider adding a natural face oil like coconut, almond, or my favorite: grapeseed, and let it dry. Most recently though he has been cast in the highly-anticipated series Aquarius, alongside a stellar cast lead by David Duchovny, who played the legendary character Hank Moody in Californication; Claire Holt, from The CW’s beloved shows, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals; and Gethin Anthony, who played Renley Baratheon in HBO’s epic series, Game of Thrones. Although Hollywood is notorious for being a tough industry to crack, it helps to find inspiration in other iconic actors. Damon revealed two very influential people who had a profound effect on him as an aspiring performer. “Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. Those were the two performances that really stood out for me... I wanted to try to make people feel the way that they made me feel”. Damon goes on to elaborate that “these two men in particular stand out to me because I think I can relate to them in weird ways. There’s such a beautiful ugliness they can show, rawness”. Although Damon has acquired a tremendous amount of acting experience to date, Aquarius may be the show to catapult him to a whole new level. 41

The show has already received rave reviews from critics, most likely due in part to the A-list cast, headlined by Duchovny. Regarding his high-profile co-star, Damon says that he and Duchovny have a playful yet professional friendship. “Ah he’s awesome, we have a good sense of camaraderie, we mess with each other a lot for sure, play pranks on each other. He’s kind of my boss in a big way... He really nails it every time, so the only one who’s going to screw up is you”. Damon admits to appreciating the more gritty and dramatic thrillers like Aquarius because “they challenge you more, make you dig deeper... I generally prefer drama just because I prefer authenticity and it’s harder to have that with comedy or lighter projects”. He also provided some insight into his affinity for working with another co-star, Claire Holt. “I think she was definitely my “set bestie”, it’s just easy to be around her and to hang out with her, she’s so light-hearted and so on top of her sh**. Claire Holt is just a groovy chick, anybody would be lucky to hang out with her on set”. Similarly, NBC’s Friday Night Lights was a critically acclaimed dramatic series that relied on the winning formula of easy-going chemistry between cast members like Damon. “We filmed in

Austin, which is just a really awesome place to hang out in general, the food’s amazing, there are all these festivals, and there was literally something to do every day. I learned some of my biggest lessons from that show. Kyle Chandler taught me a lot... It was a very fortunate experience so early on in my career, to be part of a show like that... so I’m excited any time I get to see any of the cast again”. What’s surprising is that Damon didn’t start out focused on an acting career. “I intended to be a cartoonist”, he admits. Given that both his parents are successful painters, Damon is a natural in many other artistic outlets besides acting, including sculpting, writing, drawing comics and photography. “The artist gene was sort of in me”. In speaking with Damon, it’s clear that this sensitive artisitic side accounts for a large part of his allure and unique talent. “We need to remind ourselves of self worth. My friend was going through a hard time and I basically put it out there that she was far too beautiful and unique a snowflake to be falling in the mud...and for some reason that just came out”. You can catch Grey Damon on the full season of Aquarius, now available on the NBC app or on the NBC website http://bit.ly/AquariusNBC. July 2015 - BELLO

Love At First Sight WE’VE ALL BEEN THERE… BUT IS IT REALLY TRUE? BY MARK NORRIS

“THIS IS GOING TO SOUND CRAZY, BUT FROM THE MOMENT I SET EYES ON YOU, I HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO STOP THINKING ABOUT YOU.”

There are many times when we have all been in a position of intense affection for somebody else. That moment when you see somebody across the room, and cannot stop catching their eye. Or, you are introduced to somebody at a party and feel this intense attraction towards them, instantly. It’s a feeling that goes on and on, a feeling that you can’t get out of your system. Carla Bruni explained her love for French President Nicolas Sarkozy; “Between Nicolas and me was not quick, it was instant. So for us, the wedding was actually very slow”. Love at first sight, a feeling so tender, so loving, so wild, so overwhelming

and breath-taking, and all-involving, something that you may not have experienced before. It doesn’t happen often. Love at first sight is not easy to explain… Many people deny the existence of such a force, claiming it is merely ‘sexual attraction’. A famous line from a play and film called Closer, directed by Mike Nichols and starring Jude Law in his early years, read “if you believe in love at first sight, you will never stop looking”. Arguments against the force mainly reside over the fact a person cannot feel real emotion towards another person based upon facts that aren’t known. Thus, they are based merely on wishful thinking, and a happily ever

after fairytale. To this end, love at first sight can only be a sexual desire. The more attractive the person, the higher the chances you will fall for them at first sight. Physical attractiveness is seen to predict (quite accurately), a good person, and personality. It’s a stereotypical evaluation we make. An ‘attractiveness halo’ in which what is beautiful is evaluated as also good. Love at first sight is actually a somewhat misleading term. It is based more on imagination, than on sight. Research indicates that romantic love is often based upon idealization and positive illusions, which is also true

46

purpose is to help people pick a partner, bond, and then raise a child. Heroine Interestingly, a brain scan of a person in love, can discover an activation of the same areas of the brain that a heroin addict activates. Sex drive and sexual craving in both men and women is fueled by testosterone. In contrast, romantic love is emotional obsession. But much the same as a sex drive, romantic love can be triggered immediately, which may explain the term “falling in love”, something quick and unintentional. for love that lasts for many years. It’s also true for other relationshipbased emotions, for instance, jealousy. Jealousy is often based upon incorrect beliefs about your partners’ activities. Limited focus of emotion often leads people to hold distorted emotional beliefs about people you care about “Whoever loves, loves at first sight” --William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night Love at first sight can be the basis for a long lasting, blossoming relationship, provided that the characteristics revealed in initial conversation later enhance, or at least do not contradict, the characteristics perceived at first sight. “Of course I liked you, but then you opened your mouth”. Relationships often break down because of this distorted perception of reality when you first meet someone. Although beauty has a powerful halo over a person at first sight, this impact decreases with time, as we get to know other characteristics about a person.

We all build up perceptions of people we like in our minds, a known history, and manipulated reality. This will only have a positive impact on the initial relationship we have with that person. Dr Helen Fisher from the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex Gender and Reproduction explains, “Men are so visual, they see a person who appeals to them physically, and it will trigger the romantic love system faster. Women are custodians of the egg, so they are more careful romantically.” Romantic love and its intense desire for connection with the other person typically lasts between 18 months and 3 years, experts say. Its instinctive

Love is a complicated paradigm of emotion and feeling. It can throw us into the sky, above the clouds, or deep underground, where we wish we’d never go. It’s a funny thing, when you think about it, something THAT powerful can have such an affect on your mindset. Something you cannot be without, and then something you never see again, the day after a fight. A cautionary word of advice; have many loves in your life. Surround yourself in love. But not just the romantic kind. Stay safe. Your heart is precious. For more content, follow me on Twitter: @thenorristwins and Instagram: @ the_norris_twins

Love at first meeting is linked heavily to the ‘personality halo’. A person who is perceived to have a positive personality trait is also perceived to be attractive, and assumed to have other good traits, too. To this end, social media is glamorizing us all. We are all living lives on social media that far outweigh our personal feelings and realities in real life, thus complicating this halo affect further. 47

Cocktails In The City BY LUKE BARR

Luke’s liquors: mixology at home. Savory, earthy and perfectly tart with a dry finish, the signature Prickly Pear is the balanced summer cocktail for anyone looking to make a sophisticated splash. This drink is meant to be enjoyed by a discriminating and refined palate, so given how easy it is to concoct, it’s plenty to brag about when all is said and done.

The Prickly Pear • 1 oz. top-shelf vodka • 1/2 oz. St. Germain • 1/2 oz. prickly pear purée • 1/2 oz. rosemary simple syrup (optional) • Squeeze of fresh lemon Shake with ice, garnish with thinly sliced cucumber, and top with your favorite champagne.

The Roger Room 370 N. La Cienega Boulevard, West Hollywood Welcome to the modern day speakeasy, a clandestine nod to the notorious underworld of Chicago’s storied past. The Roger Room is the bar you want to disappear into, when you’re tired of LA’s bold, bright daylight glare and looking to slink into the dark, nonjudgmental night. To understand the beautiful complexity that goes into each concoction at The Roger Room, one must treat it like a gripping noir novel that draws you in with many delicious characters and unexpected twists. Ultimately the plot leads you through an enthralling experience that is your one-of-a-kind Roger Room cocktail creation. That is why The Roger Room doesn’t have run-of-the-mill bartenders, they have chemists--or better yet, mad scientists who specialize in booze. We can’t decide which we like more: watching the chemistry of the cocktail come together, or enjoying the final masterpiece. Luckily, you don’t have to choose.

Before you drink, be entertained. The Roger Room is inconspicuously tucked right next to the Largo at the Coronet Theatre, off La Cienega Boulevard in the heart of Los Angeles. For an entertaining night out with an in-the-know crowd, be sure to catch a creatively independent show at the Largo and then pop right over to The Roger Room for a handcrafted cocktail that is more of an experience than a beverage. Driving “The” Ferrari

and All Its 962 Horses Test Drive: 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari BY MATT DAVIS AND ZIGA COLJA, SAGA Institute

IT WOULD BE A BALD-FACED LIE TO TELL YOU THAT THE PROMISE OF DRIVING THE FERRARI LAFERRARI DOESN’T STILL MAKE ME, A DRIVER OF SUPERCARS, NERVOUS AS HELL. EVEN WITH MY DEEP EXPERIENCE WITH TEST DRIVING EVERY KOENIGSEGG, VARIOUS BUGATTI VEYRONS, AND EACH MODEL CRAFTED BY PAGANI, I STILL FALL PREY TO A BEGINNER’S ANXIETY IN CASES LIKE THE LAFERRARI. THE SOLES OF MY FEET GET SWEATY AND MY FINGERS SUDDENLY FUMBLE A BIT AS I REACH TO OPEN THE SWAN DOOR OF “THE” FERRARI, READY TO DRIVE IT AROUND THE HALLOWED TEST TRACK OF FIORANO NOT FAR FROM FERRARI HEADQUARTERS IN MARANELLO, ITALY.

This has been an insanely silly season of hypercars and it’s likely to be a while before anything like it will happen again anytime soon. Following the exciting calendar blip a while back that included both the 730 hp/1000 newtonmetres (Nm) of torque Pagani Huayra and the 1140 hp/1200 Nm Koenigsegg SEXY issue - BELLOmag.com

Agera R, the focus has shifted recently from boutique shops to relative mainstreamers. This latest round includes the power triad consisting of the Porsche 918 Spyder (887 ps/1320 Nm), the McLaren P1 (903 ps/900 Nm), and now this ultimate Ferrari LaFerrari at 963 ps and 970 Nm.

Prices range for the lot between €780000 and €1.4 million, the LaFerrari right up there at €1.2 million. I think of this triad as a perfectly conducted, high-performance threeact opera. The plug-in 918 Spyder hybrid--test driven in November 2013-52

public two-lanes with gorgeous sweepers? Does it make sense to take this high-performance machine on any public road with a speed limit? The answer is obviously no; it is designed and engineered for the track experience in proper conditions that permit us to throw all commonsense traffic laws to the wind.

is wholly impressive in its technological power and it can absolutely crush the other two of this trio in “green” ecofriendly credentials. Meanwhile, the P1 hybrid-boosted ground-hugger--test driven in March 2014--is exactly what I was hoping McLaren would do for me in this round: deliver a vicious kick-inthe-pants and make me feel damned close to one of their GT3 drivers. In the back of my mind, however, I was honestly waiting for the LaFerrari to break the sound barrier (or at least rearrange my DNA and separate my retinas). The drama was building as I had been truly impressed by the sophisticated seriousness of the McLaren P1. The ball was obviously in Ferrari’s court. Before letting me loose on the 3 km fun park at the Fiorano track, however, Ferrari had me to first head out onto the wild hilly two-lanes south of Maranello. Many drivers who previously tested the LaFerrari had been plagued by torrential rain, and I can’t even imagine trying to do anything in this car under such conditions--on hairpin-choked and oily Italian hill roads, much less. Luckily, I didn’t have to worry as the morning sun shone brightly and temperatures were perfect for consistent engine cooling and tire adhesion.

conditions. Nonetheless, Ferrari has created a hypercar that can pull it off without feeling gawky, fragile, or utterly insane. I remember a similar first drive of the larger Enzo back in 2002, when I was struck by that monster’s almost everyday drive capabilities when properly set up. Such is the case here with the third generation, dual mode magnetorheological dampers of the LaFerrari. The overall feel, responsiveness, and ride over rumpled and sometimes pitted twolane roadways are accommodating yet decidedly clear in their feedback. Undeniably it’s at the closed track that really and truly reveals the sheer breadth and depth of the LaFerrari’s capabilities. Let’s be honest: is the LaFerrari really designed to cruise down the easy highway or even along

The “F140 FE” 800 ps 6.2-liter, naturally aspirated and dry-sump V12 engine (6 262cc to be precise) with 700 Nm of torque makes just a tick less than a screaming sound on up to its healthy 9250 RPM redline in the 1420-kg LaFerrari versus all other V12 Ferraris I’ve experienced. This is essentially the exact same engine fastened up front in the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, but there it cranks out 740 ps and 690 Nm for a car weighing 1525 kgs. Then here is added the so-called “traction e-motor” which is the rearmost device on the whole powertrain, with the seven-speed dualclutch transmission that’s sandwiched between it and the V12 at my back. This electric motor accounts for 163 further ps and 270 more Nm of mechanical twist. Put simply, this booster motor energised by the 2,3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack is what fills the lower rev range on the V12 with so much forward thrust. The V12 is actually held back at lower revs while the e-motor is used there to fill the roll and result also in

It’s worth noting that these fun roads are notoriously far from perfect and the rigid build of the LaFerrari chassis and body is not really meant to slog through these everyday road 53

a bit better fuel efficiency versus the V12 doing everything by itself. This powertrain is all together referred to as “HY-KERS” and has been applied to the road directly from the extensive explorations with it in recent Formula 1 cars. Ferrari says that there will never be a full EV mode programmed in to LaFerrari as the e-motor is strictly for boost purposes. The four contact patches that ultimately allow the driving to take place are truly exceptional Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, 19-inch front and 20-inch rear. The physics of the situation are tremendous, with the LaFerrari sitting 35 millimetres lower than an Enzo and the driver’s hip point down 60 mms versus the Enzo sitting position. The car’s width is also 40 mms narrower versus Enzo, this point accentuated dramatically by the glass dome aero shape and the integration of the robust door sills. Open the swan doors and the essential form of a Formula 1 car is there to see, and getting in and out of the LaFerrari, for both legs and head, is as easy as doing so in many less low-lying cars. The aerodynamics pick up where the recently tested 458 Speciale leaves off, with fully active front air inlets and underbody vents, and a showpiece airbrake system out back. In full race mode of the Ferrari manettino switch at the steering wheel, the downward forces generated at high speeds are blatant and strong. The Brembo carbon ceramic brakeset is enormous and taken straight from the Speciale. Couple these beefy discs with both the LaFerrari’s lighter weight, lower stance, and massive air-

braking assistance, and gradually you feel totally comfortable getting in full attack mode--it’s no more risky than in any other rear-engined Ferrari. As I sit in the wrap-around cockpit, the squared carbon-fibre steering wheel is fully adjustable while a lever pulled at the lower right of the driver’s seat releases the pedal set toward me so I can adjust it using my legs. None of that is revolutionary, but it all works perfectly in concert when you consider the seats are fixed to the chassis and immovable. Buyers can get customformed seats in three basic sizes, or can get a fully bespoke seat molded to their every contour. The drive groove is so easy to get into with LaFerrari. Within a couple of laps, I figured out the sensitivities of the throttle and brake pedals, and the famed physics of the whole operation just take over. The manettino in CT OFF mode still produces a good amount of intrusive

stability nannying, but, hell, wouldn’t you? This car is freakishly quick and way more sophisticated than its driver, so erring on safety’s side is not a criticism this time. Switching to the full-bore ESC OFF is the only way to get those famous controlled smokey burnings of Pirelli rubber through and out of the curves. Of course it’s amazingly fun and and easily repeatable. The LaFerrari is a full six seconds faster around the Fiorano track versus the stock Enzo, the acceleration to 60 mph happening in 2.6 seconds or (assuredly) less. The 499 LaFerraris to be built and delivered are all sold and were all sold prior to the Geneva motor show in March 2013. Purchasing requirements revolve around the buyer being a serious Ferrari collector, having recently purchased at least five production cars in the last few years. That would seem rather insane, but, I repeat, they all sold faster than Rolling Stones concert tickets. Now that’s brand loyalty.

BRINGING BURGERS BACK

BY RONNIE WOO

There are few old fashioned indulgences as wholesomely sexy as the humble hamburger. This iconic food, at once synonymous with the guileless American Dream and our recent demonization of fast food, boasts a cult-like status and loyal love that belies its delectable allure: a luscious all-beef patty grilled to charbroiled perfection, topped with that uniquely American guilty pleasure of processed cheese, and sandwiched between two unfussy white bread buns. Behold: the sexy simplicity of a homemade burger-best enjoyed on paper plates and your favorite can of beer at a backyard BBQ in the golden light of mid-summer.

Make the secret sauce by whisking all the sauce ingredients in a medium mixing bowl. Set aside. Preheat the oven on the lowest temperature possible. Using about 1/8 pound of ground beef for each patty, gently roll them into balls and flatten them into 6-7 inches on a piece of parchment paper so you can easily peek them off into the skillet. Season each patty with 3-finger pinches of salt and pepper on each side. Set aside. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter (enough for two buns) until bubbly. Place each bun half cut side down and brown for 30-45 seconds, until the edges have blackened just a little. Transfer to the oven to keep warm.

Using the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high and add about ½ tablespoon of butter for each patty you plan on cooking. Making sure to not crowd the pan, add them to the skillet. Cook each side for about 1-2 minutes, until deeply caramelized on each side. Use an oiled metal spatula to press the patty into the skillet to brown as much surface area as possible. Add the cheese and let it melt right before assembling the burgers. When the patties are cooked to taste, assemble each burger in this order from bottom up: bottom bun, sauce, patty (or patties), lettuce, tomato slice, more sauce, and finally the top bun. Serve with more secret sauce and enjoy!

BEST CHEESEBURGER EVER WITH CHEF’S SECRET SAUCE Secret Sauce: • ¼ cup of mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons of pickle relish (or make your own with cucumbers, vinegar, salt, pepper, and sugar) • 3 tablespoons of ketchup • 1 teaspoon of grainy mustard • ½ teaspoon of smoked paprika • ½ teaspoon of garlic powder • ½ teaspoon of onion powder • Cheeseburgers: • 80/20 ground beef (the fattier the better) • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • White enriched hamburger buns (the simpler the better, no sesame seeds) • Unsalted butter • Iceberg lettuce • Beefsteak tomato, sliced thinly • American cheese slices (don’t be shy: go for the processed kind) 55
