Letter from the Editor We all have people we look up to. We all have people we idolize. We all have our “golden gods”. Whether that is a 17-year old heartthrob at the peak of his youth, or a very brave actor willing to put notions aside to make a difference, the definition of a teen idol continues to develop and grow in our modern world. Growing up, for me, it was the movies I’d beg my mother to see and the TV shows I’d stay up to watch, that gave me the sense that life is anything you wanted it to be. I’m a strong believer in the idea that movie stars make the world go round. Celebrities, their fashions, and their actions are all consuming in the age of social media that is now. We are no longer limited to the poster on the wall of our favorite actor in a superhero costume, or the tear sheet from any given fashion magazine, filled with the familiar faces of the year or decade’s hottest supermodel. It fascinates me and it makes life truly wonderful. The faces of entertainment are the ones that are imprinted in our minds. The Audrey Hepburns, and the Alicia Silverstones and the work they create that go on to live lives outside of their creator’s own life spans. They create art, but also an image and idea that not only charms their admirers, but influences sometimes their everyday actions, to the most minuscule of moves. The idea of an icon on is not a hard one to understand, but the reasoning behind such idolization is solely of the fan’s basis. One that shouldn’t be argued nor judged. The talent featured in this issue come from all walks of life, but in my belief they were destined for a platform in flashing lights. They embody the spark and indescribable quality of a star. See for yourself. With much content, Dio Anthony Young Hollywood Editor

GET TO KNOW...

Melanie Martinez BY HIKO MITSUZUKA | @TheFirstEcho

FANS OF NBC’S THE VOICE MAY RECOGNIZE MELANIE MARTINEZ AS A STANDOUT MEMBER OF TEAM ADAM FROM THE COMPETITION’S THIRD SEASON. SINCE THEN, THE 20-YEAR-OLD SINGER-SONGWRITER HAS PICKED UP MORE ADMIRERS ALONG THE WAY AFTER RELEASING HER EP, DOLLHOUSE, LAST YEAR. AND NOW, AFTER RELEASING THE SUMMER SINGLE “PITY PARTY,” (A SLICE OF ALT-POP PERFECTION IF YOU ASK US), SHE’S READY TO DROP HER FULL-LENGTH DEBUT ALBUM LATER THIS MONTH (CRY BABY).

BELLO magazine: We’re loving the colorful pop look of your music video juxtaposed with the dark and melancholy content of your songs. What was it like directing “Pity Party”? How’s the creative process different from songwriting? Melanie Martinez: The creative process for writing out storyboards is way different than songwriting. It’s important for me to tell the story in a 7

visual way for the song. It was easy for me to create the storyboard because I wrote the song, but it would’ve been harder for me if I didn’t write the song. I knew, when I was writing the song, I already had the visual story in my head of how I wanted the music video. This is the first video in which it was only me, and there were no other characters, so I had to act and put all my energy into it. It was definitely hard for me but it was fun getting into character. The August 2015 - BELLO

I am real with people and can’t pretend to be perfect. I want people to eventually understand that artists and celebrities are not perfect. Artists are artists because they love creating and love what they do.

house that we shot in was really old and my “bedroom” was beautiful. I was very happy to shoot it there because it was inspiring and I had my old toys to decorate the room with. BM: What’s the saddest birthday you’ve ever experienced? MM: I actually have a picture of it and I posted it on Instagram recently. It was my 3rd birthday party, and I loved Barney as a baby and toddler. So my parents thought it would be a great idea to have a creepy Barney and clown to come to my party. There are pictures of Barney and my dad holding me as I hysterically cried. This is probably my oldest memory that I remember because I wanted to jump out the window because I was so scared of Barney and that clown. I am crying in pictures while my dad is holding me, and the clown has his hand on my back, and Barney is next to me waving to the camera. It is so messed up.

BM: What can we expect on Cry Baby? MM: A story! BM: Being relatively new to the spotlight, what have you learned about yourself while you continue to blaze a trail for your career?

MM: I really love Bjork, CocoRosie and Father John Misty. I enjoy a lot of different types of music and artists.

MM: I’ve learned that I am really bad at doing interviews (laughs). But a big thing I learned is that people expect artists to be “super perfect” all the time, like if they say or do something stupid, they’re a terrible role model. Even if the artist is 16 or 17, 18 or 20, it doesn’t matter. People don’t consider their age and what they’re going through. It’s hard for me to pretend to maintain a perfect image because I am real with people and can’t pretend to be perfect. I want people to eventually understand that artists and celebrities are not perfect. Artists are artists because they love creating and love what they do.

BM: Is the touring life everything you had dreamed it to be?

Follow Melanie Martinez on Twitter @ MelanieLBBH

BM: Who are your musical inspirations?

9

MM: Touring is hard for me because I want to create and I’m not able to do that, especially with radio promo during the tour. It can be a lot to handle. There are times when I just want to go home, but I love performing and meeting people on the road!

Q&A Star Quality YOUNG HOLLYWOOD

INTERVIEW BY DIO ANTHONY, Young Hollywood Editor PHOTOGRAPHED BY WILLIAM CALLAN

AT 24-YEARS OLD, PIERSON FODE HAS THE LOOKS OF LEADING MAN, A HEARTTHROB, AND THE PERSONALITY OF THE VERY NICE AND GOOFY BOY NEXT DOOR. THIS SEPTEMBER, WITH THE RELEASE OF HIS FILM NAOMI & ELY’S NO KISS LIST, BASED ON THE BOOK BY RACHEL COHN AND DAVID LEVITHAN, BOTH GIRLS AND BOYS ALIKE WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH THE WASHINGTON STATE NATIVE. In homage to John Hughes’ Breakfast Club turning 30 years old, we dressed the No Kiss List star in modern takes of Sherman High School’s most famous personalities, The Criminal, The Brain, and The Athlete, or “Sporto” if you’re a Judd Nelson fan. Get to know the parkour enthusiast before he too, along with Hollywood’s other “golden gods”, is hanging on everyone’s bedroom wall. BELLO Magazine: Tell me about Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List? Pierson Fode: It’s a cute little romcom that takes place in New York, about a girl, who loves a boy that loves a boy. It’s about that feeling of unrequited love that we all go through at some point in our lives, when we like someone and they just don’t feel the same way about us. And it puts tension on the friendship. It’s also about coming to 11

terms with that and how we maneuver our friendships in that way, and how we love each-other. And in the end, how complicated that can get. BM: What was it like filming an independent film in New York City? PF: We did a lot of gorilla style shooting, where we’d just hop out of a van and get shots. I won’t say that we didn’t have permits. But I will say, there were definitely moments where I wondered, hmm, I hope we can shoot here. BM: You premiered the film at Outfest. You’ve done a reading there before, but how was the experience of showing the film for the very first time to audiences? PF: This was my first time having a film premiere ever actually. I’d never had

a film premiere, and I was excited to have that be my thing, my movie. And it was amazing. The audience was super supportive; it was really well received and I was super happy. Actually, in the Q&A after the screening everybody got sort of choked up. It was one of the best Q&A’s that I’ve been to or been a part of. Ryan Ward and I, who plays my love interest in the movie, surprised everyone with a kiss on stage. It was totally in the moment. Someone asked who was a better kisser, Victoria or Ryan, and I just walked off stage and then I walked back on, he jumped out of his seat and we just did it. BM: Who was on the last Poster that you owned? PF: Currently, Darth Vader and Heath Ledger. Those are the posters that I have up on my wall right now. August 2015 - BELLO

BM: Who would you say you idolize? PF: I kind of tend to go back, like Cary Grant. He’s one of my favorites. Because there’s a guy who could be hilarious, and at the same time go into a very serious character, and pull off something that was great. So, I love him. Also, James Cagney, and all of the “Rat Pack”. That entire crew was amazing! BM: Do you have a favorite Cary Grant movie? PF: The Bachelor and The Bobby-Soxer. Co-starring Shirley Temple. The best lines in film are in that movie. BM: Do you remember the first time you watched The Breakfast Club? PF: I was 18, and I was taking classes out of college. The class was film technique. My professor turned on The Breakfast Club. I had never seen it before, and I’d heard about it, and I was really skeptical, because everyone kind of hyped it up. I thought they were all very well spoken, very fun. Doing things that aren’t terrible, but they were still totally menaces for doing so. BM: Your IMDB Profile states Make It happen as a personal quote. What’s the story behind that? PF: Coming from a really small town, a farm. With no access to LA or Hollywood or anything like that, I had to make everything happen for myself. My parents, I love them, and they were and still are so supportive. But they had no idea or concept of how to get me down here or anything like that. Being farmers, it was really two polar opposite worlds. And so, I took that as kind of an initiative to educate myself. And find a way to make it down here. From the moment I found out I could do anything with film, at about 7 or 8 years old, it was set. I was going to make it happen. Ever since I’ve been out here, it’s been the same thing. If I don’t know how to do it, I will make it happen.

13

BM: What do you remember when you think back on your modeling days? PF: It’s a very interesting world. So different, and it can be a little one sided. As a model you’re kind of a blank canvas, to do whatever the photographer wants. But at the same time, I found it really fun. I had never really experienced anything like that. I was styled, and taken care of, I was flown places. It was a super short little moment where I got to explore a new world with some interesting people. BM: You just wrapped another film, Cardinal X. Which couldn’t be more different than your role in the Romantic Comedy. PF: It’s a very dark drug drama, actually based on the director’s life story back in the 1980s. She got a hold of a drug called ecstasy, and she began manufacturing it in her lab at the college she was attending. My character in the film, introduces her to it. He’s an Olympic swimmer, and kind of spearheads her into different drug dealing directions. It was a very dark role. And it was really fun to play to be totally honest. I loved it. It’s a different kind of darkness. It’s more about neglect, and trying to find his way and figuring out what to do. It deals with the notion of having power, but not having any of it all at the same time. My character Alex is wrestling with his own demons in a lot of ways. BM: You are an adrenaline junkie, and practice Parkour. What is your favorite activity to stay active and let your adrenaline run loose? PF: Definitely parkour. I mean if I could, I would do it every day. It’s just kind of hard to get access to gyms or places where I wouldn’t get arrested for climbing on their buildings. Being somewhat of a public figure now, I have to be a little bit more cautious about being possibly arrested [laughs]. I go cliff jumping any chance I get, as well

as surfing. I grew up playing soccer and diving, and all sorts of crazy stuff. I just love to get out. I go out to Malibu or Venice and just ride along the coast depending on what’s less crowded, or where the waves are coming in. It was crazy, last year I went out with a buddy when the monsoon waves were coming in, keep in mind these are about 10 foot waves, it was terrifying. We’re about to hit our last wave, and I look at him and say, ‘Bro, I’m going to get the big one’. So I swim out way further, and he’s paddling alongside me, but then he bails. I just see him as I’m paddling on top of this wave and he looks up, and I can see the words “oh shit” run across his mouth. So, I start to stand up on my board and I realize how high up I am. I start coming down on the waves, and I too, had to bail, because it was just -too big for me. So I dive. I remember looking up, and it was probably about a 16-17 foot wave. I could’ve definitely been hurt. BM: You’ve been dabbling into the world of YouTube lately. Usually you’re either an actor or a Youtube personality. What inspired that venture in you? PF: I’m actually just getting into it. Even though I’ve done a lot of web series it was a really tough choice for me actually. Because I love the freedom that YouTube and all these other social media outlets bring as far as being an artist goes. You have complete control of what you do. But outside of that, it’s a lot of commitment. Because you want to produce quality material, constantly. And the attention span on social media is the micro-wave of attention spans. It’s so hard to always create material that’s quality, and you’re like, I want to take a month off and you can’t do that when you start a channel. I’ve officially committed. I want to get in there and work on some original sketches that I’m working with another crew on, and behind the scenes stuff that I would have loved to see as a kid.

IN A HIGHLY DIVERSE CAST OF YOUTHS ON ABC FAMILY’S THE FOSTERS, GAVIN MACINTOSH IS NO EXCEPTION. THE 16-YEAR-OLD ACTOR PLAYS CONNOR STEVENS, MOST NOTABLY KNOWN FOR THE KISS SEEN AROUND THE WORLD.

When Connor and Jude (played by Hayden Byerly) first kissed in the groundbreaking episode, “Now Hear This”, they became the youngest gay couple to kiss on TV, thus inspiring the couple name “Jonnor”. It was a small yet powerful statement that showed a new generation was ready to open a dialogue. We sat down with Gavin to discuss his role on The Fosters and his impact on his young fans. BELLO Magazine: The kiss on The Fosters was a really big deal for obvious reasons. What was the response like for you? Gavin MacIntosh: It was a big deal for many reasons. The response made me feel emotional for a lot of reasons. And some of these kids that have reached out to me are struggling with what society tells them what they should be like. These kids reach out to me out of fear of what their parents or their friends are gonna think about them when they find out they’re questioning their sexuality. You know, it’s a big deal. So being a part of it, it’s groundbreaking. BM: Did you have any negative response though? GM: Not very much. Very minimal negative response in The Fosters fan base. I’m so grateful for all my fans, and they’re all so positive. You know, I love them. So, there’s been very minimal negative impact. BM: Do you think it’s something that your generation was ready for? GM: Oh, absolutely. This is long overdue. I mean there’s been progress on network TV with showing equality 29

issues, but this is the first show that addresses the emotional state of young kids and what they’re feeling. I mean these feelings often start young so it’s important to have this representation. It helps a lot of these kids feel more confident and less shameful, and just really grow up normally because they’re normal. They don’t deserve to be treated differently. Unfortunately there still is bullying, and I’m hoping by my role that Connor can somehow help this. You know, I think he has. I think this whole Connor and Jude storyline is pushing this whole issue more to the forefront. It’s touching this new generation and instilling acceptance. So I’m hoping it helps some kinds feel confident. BM: Peter Paige, the series creator, is really an important part of LGBT television. What’s it like working with him? GM: I love Peter. Besides him being super talented, he’s completely handson with the show. Both in writing and directing, his passion is so genuine. That’s the best part of Peter. That translates on screen, particularly in the “Jonnor” storyline. BM: So I heard you went to your first Gay Pride recently. What was that like? GM: I did. Gay Pride, wow. That was such a cool experience. It’s unbelievable I got to be a part of it. You know, I’m surprised of all the different demographics that came together. Every time I go to equality events, I learn something. It fuels me and I learn something more about my role as Connor. I realize how important the show is, and it helps me realize how important the storyline is. It’s really something that needs to be told. Reaching out and meeting people

that watch me on TV, the people that I’m affecting, it helps me do better in the role of Connor. BM: As a child actor, juggling your career and school must be pretty demanding. Are you able to make time for hobbies and other activities? GM: It’s just like any other job, or if you’re a competitive sports player. It’s really all about priorities. You know, school and my career can get demanding. And sometimes, I do get busy with school and work on the long days, but I try to make time to stay active and go outside. I always find time to exercise, whether I skateboard or run on the beach, because that really clears my head and enables me to focus on acting and school. BM: Your career is really taking off. Is there a specific character you want to play or a project you want to star in? GM: What would be really cool is to play in action films such as Mad Max or Warrior. They both star Tom Hardy. Can you tell I’m a hardcore Tom Hardy fan? (laughs) I’ve always wanted a role that’s physically demanding, or that I might have to train for. Like The Rock in Hercules, he had to train for months, and build up and get into the character. I’ve always wanted to have a character like that. BM: Since this is for our [Young Hollywood] issue, I want to know who you have a poster of on your wall. Who are some of your idols? GM: Well a few of my idols are Tom Hardy as I said before, Nyjah Huston, a pro skateboarder. I’m looking at the poster right now of Rodney Mullen. He’s like the pioneer of skateboarding. BUT FIRST, LET ME TAKE A SELFIE; are we raising a generation of narcissists?

BY MARK NORRIS For more of my content, follow me on Instagram: @mrmarknorris & Twitter: @thenorristwins

FROM THE SURGE IN BOTOX TECHNOLOGY, TO SKINCARE, TO SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS LIKE FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, AND SNAPCHAT, SPORTS TEAMS WHO GIVE ALL THEIR KIDS A TROPHY AT THE END OF A COMPETITION, AND A GENERAL OBSESSION WITH THE SELF, WHAT ARE WE REALLY DEALING WITH IN THE AGE OF ENTITLEMENT AND SELF-OBSESSION? In 2009, Flickr users started using the term ‘Selfie’ for the endless selfportraits posted by teenage girls on the platform. The front facing camera, and resurgence of popular platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, have transformed the ‘Selfie’ into a modern day phenomenon, causing cultural and social psychologists great cause for concern. There are many facets that clinical professionals have focused their attention on, from the rise of “porn

culture”, that says sexual attractiveness is the only way a woman can make herself visible, to “revenge porn” where ex-lovers post sexual images of themselves to enact revenge on each other. ‘Selfies’ are a way to generate interest and attention to oneself. To some people, they are a need in everyday life now, and this is particularly troubling. Looking behind the scenes, what are the reasons for this? Ask yourself a question, why do you take selfies? When you next find yourself

holding your phone out in front of you, trying to get that perfect angle on your shadow and cheekbones, ask, what is it I want to get from posting this? I could say, oh, its showing people where I am, or what I’m doing, or how great my life is. But in reality, that’s not the real reason, is it. No. The real reason is because i’m trying to attract attention from people who follow me or know me. It’s a simple thing. This is somewhat normal, we are social beings after all, and we want to connect with YOUNG HOLLYWOOD issue - BELLOmag.com

times of generations to come, one particular series which should be noted is Generation Me, by Jean Twenge.

our peers, and gain social approval. But the insecurities we all have, to some degree, are changing the way we think, and deal with the modern world. So what actually is Narcissism? It means ‘having an inflated or grandiose sense of self’. A narcissist thinks he or she is particularly special and entitled to better treatment than others. They can be charming, flattering, energetic, and likeable, but they enter the relationships in their life for their own narcissistic needs. You can all probably think of somebody you know that fits this picture. Narcissists can be fun to be around in the short term, but awful to work with, or be in a close relationship with for the long term. There have been some excellent books and papers written on the changing

At the core of Narcissism is the fantasy that you are better than you really are (and better than the people around you). Any opportunity that allows this fantasy to exist in your life, despite the less glamorous reality, is an opportunity for Narcissism to thrive. Hence, social media, and Facebook timelines, in particular. When have you ever seen somebody posting a picture of last nights warmed up Spaghetti Bolognese? You only post what is socially desirable (or what you think

is socially desirable to your people). Of course, “Selfies” are only one type of narcissistic behavior, and there are many (good and bad) reasons behind why we see them posted, so often. But finally, a contention of mine that I think contributes extensively to this narcissistic culture, is the shallow celebrity world that we live in, today. The celebrity world promotes narcissism as not just acceptable, but desirable. The social models we see all around us are advertisements for a narcissistic lifestyle. Having lived in the spheres of celebrity culture around different parts of the world, I have an understanding of how these exclusive worlds coincide with the realities of the everyday person. Many famous people just want to live normal lives, with normal, healthy, happy, and long-lasting relationships. Once you have the spotlight, you realize what you really want is normality. But having not been in such a position, many people (young teenagers, especially), want for fame and attention, thinking it will make them happy. But only now do I realize the truths. Once you experience living in the celebrity world, you understand, not many people are truly happy, and that all anybody wants, is normality.

THE PREMIERE OF NBCS “SUMMER EVENT” AQUARIUS BACK IN LATE MAY SIGNALED THREE THINGS: THAT THE SHOW OF THE SUMMER WAS HERE; A NEW HYBRID GENRE WAS ABOUT TO TAKE OFF, AND FOR ME, MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE RETURN OF EMMA DUMONT TO TV SCREENS AND TABLETS HAD FINALLY COME. OF COURSE, THE WORLD COULD THANK ME LATER FOR MY VISIONARY SUPPORT OF THIS EMERGING TALENT.

Aside from NBC’s terrific casting choice in Gethin Anthony’s riddle-filled Manson, 20-year-old Emma Dumont is the series’ heart, as the humble, but often-times foolish Emma Karn. She plays a well-off Angeleno lured into the hands of Charles Manson and his infamous family, not unlike several girls in the actual age of Aquarius-three of whom were convicted of first degree murder on multiple counts, one of whom passed away in 2009. For Dumont, playing a teenager who strays from her safe home life into the dangerous clutches of a cult doesn’t bring up feelings of rebellion in her. In fact, playing the runaway has the complete opposite effect on the actress. “Had I lived in the 60s, I can say with confidence that I would not have joined any sort of family or group. Let alone with Charles Manson,” she laughs before continuing. “Absolutely not. It’s hard to understand from an outsider’s perspective. But I would not have been caught up in that.” However, being so removed from the mentality of her 60s equal in no way neutralizes her performance. In episode four titled ‘Home Is Where You’re Happy’, Dumont’s eponymous Emma goes on her very first acid trip, compliments of Charlie. It’s a moment all too real, not to mention wildly entertaining. Especially for someone who initially had zero idea of what they were trying 37

to get across. To my surprise, and to the world, once they’ve read this, that psychedelic display of influence was Dumont’s audition scene. Be that as it may, she admits to it being her favorite of scenes to film. “When auditioning, I wasn’t given a script. It was all very confidential,” she recalls. “I had no idea what drug she was on. They just gave me the sides, which had very little stage direction. So, I didn’t have much to go off besides the lines. I was like, what is this girl on? Because she was just screaming and yelling and having a fit.” Flash-forward a couple months after production wraps, and what audiences got was a very shaky depiction of a drug trip Manson family members were all too familiar with. In the NBC version, there’s a rifle involved, followed by David Duchovny swinging Dumont’s small frame onto his shoulder and taking her back to her swanky home in the hills. “It was fantastic!” she says, “It took about three to five hours to shoot.” Duchovny seemed to share her feelings on the topic. “I remember David saying, Emma, you don’t hold back, do you?” A compliment given by David Duchovny is a compliment worthy of a star. It should be noted that the absurdness and straight up foolery committed by the Emma Karn character is not lost on the Seattle, Washington native. So much, that many times, she neither

agrees with her character’s choices, nor understands them. This is where the research she combed through came in handy. “So often, I got the script and said to myself [about Emma], ‘stupid girl, go back to your handmade dresses and your mansion. Go back to your beautiful mother who loves you. You dumb girl’,” she jokes. “But it was a different time in America.” To attempt to understand the logic behind Emma’s choices, Dumont payed close attention to the guise of a woman, in relation to 1960s society. I felt like I had to catch on to what happened to these girls. And so, my research consisted of books and films mainly, and I took note of how they [women] acted and how they were understood, and how they presented themselves. That was super interesting to me, because there was such a vast difference,” she says. “Even the way women spoke was distinct. So, I have a very different voice that I use for Emma. I reminded myself that it was the 60s and women didn’t really have as much of a role in..well, life.” Filming in the city that served as the actual backdrop and home to the Manson family’s bloody reign in Los Angeles history leaves a wide chance of spectators and faces that could have been involved in ways we’ll never know. With over 10 unsolved murders in the LA area still linked to the family, nearly August 2015 - BELLO

three decades have passed since Charles Manson’s initial conviction, locking him away for good. Dumont’s brush with real life personalities of the Manson-era have been on the safe side, but that isn’t to say they haven’t been memorable. “I think we’ve all met someone from that time that was somehow involved or knew someone. Because we are in LA, we’re filming in LA, and it happened here in LA,” she says. “Collectively, we’ve come across people that were either friends or hung out in Charlie’s group. To me, the most memorable experience thus far was something a woman said to me. She owned a little shop, or used to own a little shop—on Melrose, I believe. I will never forget it, she said, ‘I remember the Manson girls, they used to come in here and they were filthy. Just dirty, like, covered in dirt. I couldn’t believe it. It’s crazy’.” Sure enough, a little behind the scenes anecdote gives complete validity to the shop owner’s claim. “It’s funny because I actually have two sets of costumes on the show. I like to say one is for the preppy life, while the other’s for the hippie life. And all my hippie clothes get brought to my trailer in bags, because they’re so dirty. I’m pretty sure it’s fake dirt, but nonetheless, they’re still really dirty.” Outside of the world of Aquarius, Manson, and all the bloody baggage that comes along with his name, Dumont lives a life very different than the one she steps into day in and day out on the set of her NBC drama. One look at her Instagram account and the Wilhelmina girl enjoys her fair share of 39

fashion-induced fun, as any model her age would. Earning titles like, ‘Model of The Moment,” Dumont’s life resembles what could have been of her ficitional character, had she stayed on the right path. She’s also a classically trained ballerina, having studied around the world for the sake of her craft. She’s a triple threat of a new kind: actor, model, and dancer. All which are very apparent when she steps in front of photographer Maarten de Boer at her BELLO magazine shoot, killing it on every frame and every pose. For a girl who steps into a role in the one of the most talked about eras of our country daily, she appreciates the universal influence and imprint the 60s has had on the nation. Dumont cites The Velvet Underground and The Factory as her favorite parts of the famous decade. “You love the 60s? I love the 60s too,“ she says to me. “But, East Coast 60s. Tin foil everywhere! I’m totally into THAT. I’m also really into Leigh Bowery, who was a designer and performance artist. That was in the 80s, but also prominently in New York City.”

It’s funny because I actually have two sets of costumes on the show. I like to say one is for the preppy life, while the other’s for the hippie life.

We switch to the topic of idols, and she lists RuPaul, Lady Gaga, Alexander McQueen, and Gareth Pugh off the top of her head. “I was never the type of girl to gush over Robert Pattinson,” she confesses. “I idolized a lot of gay men actually, now that I think back on it,” she says, unable to hold her laugh. I think to myself, for a girl who enjoys the likes of Edie Sedgwick and her fabulous troupe of friends, I’ve never met anyone whose spirit and spark resemble the late socialite so much as Emma Dumont herself. Lorenzo Henrie grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and despite moving to the bright lights of L.A., Henrie is persistent in his quest to visit his hometown, “I get to go back and I have a ton of cousins, so there’s always graduations or some family gathering”. David Henrie, Lorenzo’s older brother, has been in the industry a few years longer which has made the transition into acting a lot easier for Lorenzo. “He [David] constantly gives me great advice and is someone I go to, with pretty much everything. In regards to the industry, the best advice he has given me is to always remain humble”. Moreover, Lorenzo even spoke of an upcoming collaboration between the Phoenix-born brothers. “We are actually producing a project together which he will be directing and I’m going to act in”. Stay tuned! Fear the Walking Dead, the series spinoff where Lorenzo has just been cast as Chris Manawa, has already garnered much hype due the long-standing original The Walking Dead, so naturally this is one of Lorenzo’s most exciting projects to date. “There’s a great scene in episode six in the season finale, I can’t say what it is... but it’s epic and I’ll never forget it... I wish I could say more!” Such suspense!

My dream role would be one that would change the world and move people. I love stories and roles that have deep meaning with redemptive characteristics such as love, sacrifice, courage, strength, etc.

The cast on Fear the Walking Dead are a very loyal and close-knit pack, which is always a winning formula for a phenomenal TV series. “We all bonded really fast and quickly became a family. That’s one thing I’ve been super blessed about, the great cast.” In spite of his busy acting role with Fear the Walking Dead, Lorenzo is already anticipating his future performing prospects. “My dream role would be one that would change the world and move people. I love stories and roles that have deep meaning with redemptive characteristics such as love, sacrifice, courage, strength, etc. The hero’s journey is such a great opportunity to tell a story. Luke Skywalker in Star Wars is a great example of that”. It’s always refreshing to speak to humble and appreciative actors, and Lorenzo certainly didn’t disappoint here. He wisely says, “You must remember to love people and use things, rather than to love things and use people.”

DYLAN SPRAYBERRY IS ONE LUCKY TEENAGER. FOR ONE, HE STARS AS LIAM DUNBAR ON MTVS TEEN WOLF--THE BIGGEST THING TO HIT THE NETWORK IN YEARS AND A CERTIFIED FAN FAVORITE. SECONDLY, HE’S SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD. AN AGE ASSOCIATED WITH THE PRIME OF YOUTH. THERE’S A LOT TO ENVY FROM A TEEN LIVING HIS DREAM, DESIRED BY THE MILLIONS OF HARD-CORE FANS OF HIS SUPERNATURAL SERIES. FOR THE HOUSTON, TEXAS BORN ACTOR, IT’S JUST THE BEGINNING. ONE LOOK AT SPRAYBERRY, AND HE HAS THE FRAME AND BUILD OF A YOUNG MATINEE IDOL. TO FANS AND PASSERBYERS , IT’S ANOTHER ONE OF HIS BLESSINGS, BUT FOR THE TEEN WOLF STAR, IT’S THE RESULT OF DEDICATION AND HARD WORK.

“It’s not because of good genes or anything like that, I train very hard so I can stay in shape,” he says. “Not even so that I look good. But, so that I’m fit for any challenge.” Starring on a TV show that requires you to scream your lungs out in a full face of wolf make-up, followed by the occasional fight for your life in the confines of Beacon Hills High sounds like challenge enough. However, Sprayberry jokes that although he does play a supernatural entity, his role on the show is not that unlike his everyday life. “I’m a teenager and quite hairy for my age, so it’s not that different.” Of course, in reality, it is. His character Liam, somewhat of a baby werewolf, this season reveals to his best-friend played by Khylin Rhambo the truth about his supernatural status, and there reaction is anything but normal-as any high-school aged boy would react to their friend suddenly possessing otherworldly skills to protect you from harm you never knew was there to begin with. Sprayberry admits to loving his job as a supernatural teen, but can’t help but wonder what lies behind the other metaphysical doors. “If I could be anything but a teenage wolf, I’d be a teenage mutant ninja turtle,” he confesses. “Because they have weapons AND shells.”

53

So who does a teen idol idolize? It’s an easy question for him. “I look up to actors who aren’t afraid to do whatever they want and who make bold choices. Joaquin Phoenix, Sean Penn, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Tom Hardy,” he says. All household names, all iconic in their own right. Much like these actors in their heyday, Sprayberry who attended Comic-Con this summer, got a taste of

seventeen the day before, so being there was sort of my celebration,” he says. What’s he looking forward to now that he’s seventeen? “Well, I now have a [driver’s] license so that means one thing: a road trip.” At the end of the day, he may be a teenager in many senses of the word, but he’s not oblivious to the dependency his age bracket has on gadgets.

I love the show. It’s the perfect mix of drama, comedy, horror, action and fur! what it’s like to have everybody want a piece of you. “ I had one fan try to kiss me, and it was strange because she wasn’t even close to my age! A lot older,” he recalls. Sounds about right for a show that has racked up more episodes than any of the network’s former scripted attempts, with fan favorite Awkward coming in second. Thankfully, Sprayberry’s remaining time at Comic-Con was less aggressive and a bit more genial. “Overall, being at Comic-Con was amazing! Comic-Con shows Teen Wolf a lot of love and for the whole cast it’s like going on a family vacation. I also turned

“It’s a trade-off, he says. “On one end it’s great because we know what’s going on everywhere all the time,” he admits. “But, on the other end we are so focused on what’s going on everywhere else we can’t enjoy what goes on right in front of us. I purposely try to keep myself off my phone for that reason. We don’t always need to know what’s going on somewhere else. Experience life through your eyes, not your Twitter.” At the end of the day, Sprayberry says “I love the show. It’s the perfect mix of drama, comedy, horror, action and fur!” Teen Wolf fan or not, we can all appreciate a little fur.

IF YOU WERE TO MIX ONE DIRECTION WITH NSYNC AND MAYBE A LITTLE SPLASH OF FIVE SECONDS OF SUMMER, YOU WILL HAVE CREATED THE ULTIMATE BOY BAND.

A new boy band, Forever In Your Mind, is on the horizon and is comprised of three talented musicians Ricky, Emery and Liam who are taking the Disney world by storm. I had the pleasure to talk with these charismatic, rising stars and what their fans can expect from them going forward. What were your most memorable moments from your X Factor experience? R - Just being on the show and getting close with Simon as our mentor. We’ve come a long way from X Factor and I wouldn’t trade it for anything (: E - My most memorable moment on the Factor was when Simon Cowell told me I was a real pop star and like an unpolished diamond! Then he said Emery you have four yes’s! It was the best! L - I wasn’t actually on X Factor, but I remember going with Emery and seeing the crazy response he got just by being on the factor. I was blown away by all of it and that’s when I decided I wanted to do something like that. What was your reaction when you found out Simon Cowell was going to be your mentor? R - I was so stunned but at the same time I was like “Spicyyyyy” haha it was incredible though to think he put together the biggest boy band in the world and he’s putting us together!

R - I would like to think so! Haha we love our fans or as we call them minders E - Yes we do. We love our fans and every supporter. Our fans are the best!

August 2015 - BELLO

L - Having an amazing fan base is so so awesome. Honestly without them we wouldn’t be where we are and I do have admirers. I always like to open all of my Dms on Instagram and I love seeing the ones that say I changed their life for the best. It warms my heart so much. Who are your idols in the music business (band or individual)? R - 5sos, one direction, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake E - I have many idols in the music business. One Direction, Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, and Bruno Mars. Ricky, I know you did some modeling before becoming a musician; do you still want to pursue that along with the music? R - Let’s just say I love being in front of a camera okay? Okay (; Emery, your fans have been going crazy over your late night FaceTime’s with Bailee Madison! Did you know they call you Baimery and Bemery? Which one do you prefer? E - HAHA yes I knew the fans knew and I think it is adorable. I think I prefer Baimery! Would you want more of your songs to appear on other Disney programmes since ‘Best Friends Whenever’ was such a big hit? R - Most definitely! We actually have a song coming up on the 26th for a new episode. We covered the famous song “Shake your Booty” by KC and the Sunshine band. E - Absolutley! We love working with the Disney family. They are amazing and can’t wait to work on future projects.

You guys looked very stylish at the 2015 Music Billboard Awards. What was your favourite moment from that evening? R - Oh thank you (; Probably just being surrounded by such amazing people, loved that event. Looking forward to going next year (: E - My favorite moment was meeting Bailee! But my favorite music moment was hanging with my dudes, watching the great show, and hoping to be on that stage one day with all those amazing artists. L - First off, Thank you!! :) My favorite moment of that was going on my phone and seeing that Sugarscape nominated us as best dressed :p What can your fans expect from you over the next year? R - More live shows for the Digi Tour, and some REALLY EXCITING news on the music front. E - They can expect a lot of new music, hopefully a new show, and a lot of goofiness! So be ready! L - We are going to have huge things coming out in the next year. Maybe an album, or an EP, or a tour. I can’t confirm anything but be on the look out because HUGE things will be coming :) What artists in the business would you want to collaborate with? R - Justin Timberlake or Taylor Swift would be cool, Justin Bieber, 5sos or maybe take it back old school and do something with Earth Wind and Fire. E - I would love to collaborate with Ed Sheeran, One Direction, 5SOS, and Justin Timberlake.

Introducing

DEAR MORGAN Hollywood issues. In this new role, Morgan will be welcoming reader queries and choosing a few to directly answer and feature on the column. We encourage you join in on the fun by submitting your questions and calls for advice to us at editorial@bellomag.com

There’s no better time than the end of summer to start off fresh and look ahead to the possibilities and opportunities the bustling fall season brings our way. In this vein, we are proud to introduce a new addition to the BELLO family: Morgan Stewart, famed Hollywood socialite and star of E’s Rich Kids Of Beverly Hills. This new

column--cleverly titled Dear Morgan-is exclusive to BELLO magazine and offers our readers a unique and revealing angle on life’s many trials and tribulations, all through Morgan’s distinctive voice.

Hi Morgan, My best friend and roommate has been in an affair with her coworker for the last eight months. He’s married and a father of one with a baby on the way. I’ve tried everything to get her to stop and she makes half hearted efforts but it’s almost like she’s an addict to this toxic sitch. What, as a friend of 10 years, do I do!? I don’t think it’d affect me so much if we weren’t also roommates but it’s definitely causing some resentment and question of character... HELP!

Hey Morgan, I’m 23 years old and haven’t had a boyfriend since high school. All of my friends are either in long term relationships or getting engaged and I feel like I’ll never find that. It’s not that guys aren’t approaching me, they’re just not the right guys and I don’t want to lower my standards! What do I do! Sara

Hi! So, I adore you! I want to know your tricks to staying skinny and gorg.. I heard in an episode of Rich Kids that you gained some weight back in the day.. How’d you get it off? I am 5’4” and currently weigh 134, this time last year I weighed 115! Oh yeah.. I’ve already lost 10 pounds but shit it’s hard! Any tips you have would be amazing! Love you! - Sarah Marie

Hi Sara! SLOW DOWN! You realize you started off your email by telling me you’re 23? THAT’S V E R Y YO U N G . I could barely spell the word boyfriend when I was 23. You need to have fun, learn about yourself and hang with girls who are on your same page. I promise you 90 percent of your friends who are getting engaged at this point in your life will be separating by the time you get married. The right guy will come along, don’t worry!

Hi! Ugh, weight is the absolute worst. It really is. It’s taken me years to learn what to eat, how to eat and how to manage my weight. Of course I go through times where I care more or less but, I pretty much stay the same weight. For me, it’s pretty simple. I cook at home a lot, keeping things super simple. Chicken, fish, salad even rice at home is fine. Eating out is the killer, that’s where the sodium and unnecessary fats come from. If you eat at home three days a week, you should start to see results pretty soon!

Hi There! Well first of all- I see where you’re coming from. The whole situation sounds highly uncomfortable and quite messy. first and foremost, this is your best friend of ten years, try to remember that. Don’t judge her for the situation she and so many girls before her have found themselves in. If the roles were reversed you would want your friend to stick by you, regardless of how complicated the situation is. This unfortunately is going to be a lesson she needs to learn for herself. Eventually the affair will be found out and all parties involved will be highly affected and more likely then not, will separate. Let this be her problem and not yours, things happen that aren’t in our control sometimes. Hope that helps! YOUNG HOLLYWOOD issue - BELLOmag.com

BELLO Magazine: Take me back to that day when your editor at Vulture assigned you this piece [on the “Val Party” scene]? 67

Jen Chaney: Yeah, actually they were doing something called micro-history week. Where every day they were publishing an oral history that was very

uber focused on either a scene from a movie or the final montage at the end of six feet under. So very specific things. One of the editors had just been August 2015 - BELLO

brainstorming some general ideas. John Sellers who was my editor at the time said, here’s some of the things we’re looking at, take a look at this list and see if anything jumps out at you, and that was on the list; and it did jump out of me. I remembered that scene well, and thought it would be a fun one to do. I also thought people would enjoy reading about it. I had a really good time writing that piece and the response to it was really positive. I almost went with Jack Bauer’s daughter getting attacked by a cougar on 24. I found it interesting, but ultimately I thought the party scene would be more fun.

of the DMV, that still makes me laugh. And then of course, there’s the scene when Tai comes into the gym class and I don’t think I appreciated it as much before, but the way Alicia Silverstone says, “Yeah, this is America,” after the exchange of the herbal refreshment, I think it’s just so brilliant.

BM: Up to that point what had Clueless meant for you? JC: I was a little bit older when Clueless came out. So when I saw it, it took me back to the feelings I had when I saw the John Hughes movies. I just thought it was such a fun movie. While I was writing the book it just reaffirmed what I already knew, and that’s that you never get tired of watching it. It’s just one of those movies that if it’s on TV you can’t flip away from it and there’s no trouble watching it over and over again. There are many girls that wanted to be Cher during the time of its release. I was 23, although I did have a red plaid skirt with a safety pin on it, so I wasn’t totally immune! BM: What’s your absolute favorite bit of Clueless and why? JC: Well, I do love the “Val Party” scene. Just because so much is happening narratively there. There are so many funny parts that you can carve out. Like Murray getting his head shaved, or suck and blow, and all that stuff. I think when people think of the movie, that’s one of the first scenes that comes to mind. People think maybe of the Haitians speech, and they think of Yellow plaid and of course, rolling with the homie, and you’re automatically taken back to that party scene. But, also, I have to say, working on the book, and having watched the film now so many times, I have to say the Messiah YOUNG HOLLYWOOD issue - BELLOmag.com

BM: What were you most surprised to learn? JC: Gosh, everybody keeps asking me that, [laughs]. Ironically, since it’s raining, that was one thing. Since I learned that so much of production days were rainy or cloudy. That was interesting to me because I would never have guessed that watching the movie. S,o hearing about how challenging it was to deal with the weather was surprising. I was also surprised to learn about Paul Rudd almost getting shot one day outside of filming. That was surprising because Cher gets held up by the nicest mugger ever, and Paul Rudd’s experience was far scarier. Even greater was the story of Jason Alexander, who played Cher’s mugger. He was funny and very articulate and remembered every detail. I thought, okay, this book might be alright if I get a few more stories like this. BM: Do you find yourself analyzing scenes now after having written this book?

BM: But what was [it] like [writing an “oral history” book] for you? JC: As a writer the hardest part was getting people to talk to you. While I was writing this, the bulk of the work was done in six months. Which I think is pretty great for something like this, when you factor in people’s schedules. The time crunch and tracking people down were the biggest hurdles I think. But then, once you have all that information, it really is so much stuff. But I had a pretty clear outline from the get go, and I knew there were certain categories and scenes that I was going to dig into deeper than others. Had I thought of it as this big thing, it would have undoubtedly been more difficult. But you really want it to read in each chapter as if these people are all sitting around you at a table, at a bar, or at dinner. That was sort of what my aim was when I was putting it all together.

JC: I’ve always done that more or less. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with The Wizard of Oz, and for Christmas I asked Santa if he could bring me the actual screenplay. In my head I thought there was only one. I didn’t get it and thought, oh well, Santa sucks! [Laughs]. I was always into the going-ons of things and curious as to how they came together. BM: Have you toyed with the ideal of writing another “oral history” book? I would love to do an oral history of ET [the movie]. That was such a formative childhood movie going experience for me. I think the key though, and my agent has said this to me is, when you choose an oral history to do, it needs to be a lens into something bigger. With Clueless, its impact is still being felt in terms of fashion and in terms of what it did for teen movies going forward in the 90s. So it’s a question of finding a movie that has the same kind of legs, but also a movie with stories that haven’t been told before. 68
