WEEKEND GUIDE

Letter from the Editor It’s been said that every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end... Sure it may have been a one-hit-wonder band from the 90’s who delivered those famous words, but hey, that doesn’t make them any less true. Take for instance, Summer. While our days are certainly getting shorter and our vacation pics, growing older by the minute, it’s only through the ending of this beloved season that we’re greeted with the beginning of Fall. New classes, new wardrobes, new temperatures... it’s a time of change, a time of preparation (for the winter months ahead), and for us here at BELLO, it’s a time to revel in the bounty of new televison shows, award-worthy films, eye popping fashion, and blockbuster albums that categorize this time of year. Naturally we couldn’t wait to share all of our faves with you guys, including our September cover boy, Alfred Enoch, star of a little show you may have heard of called How To Get Away With Murder. And make sure you check out our profile of the incomparable actress and style icon Tilda Swinton. After all, Summer’s over, but in the world of entertainment, things are just heating up. Enjoy! Sincerely, Brad Liberti BELLO Entertainment Editor

INTRO Recently, while we were busy soaking up the last days of summer (but hopefully not the last rays of sunshine!) in beautiful Palm Springs, I thought to myself, is it September already? It feels like only yesterday that we were kicking off the summer with another exciting issue of BELLO. Instead, we’re getting excited about looking forward to the glamourous annual rituals of Fashion Week and the new fall TV season. Then the question becomes: Who’s craving to see the new season of ABC’s hit series How to Get Away With Murder? We here at BELLO sure are... To tide us over until that season premiere, we’re proud to feature the dashing and talented Alfred Enoch on this issue’s Entertainment cover. The photo shoot took place at an amazing Malibu ranch, and doubled as a great opportunity for a small team of us to get creative and really have fun with Alfred. In fact, we notices that his American accent has gotten so good that you can barely tell he’s British! Of course we then tried to get the scoop on this season’s exciting developments... but you’ll just have to wait and see it for yourselves. As a bonus, this issue of BELLO brings you a little preview of the upcoming season’s fashion trends, already in the works for next week’s much-anticipated fall Fashion issue. Until then, we wish you all a smooth start of the school year, a painless return to the office, or maybe just a relaxing transitional period to those that have worked the entire summer and are just now taking time off... Either way, please don’t forget to send us the your feedback and suggestions @BELLOmag! Ciao, Aleksandar Tomovic, Editor in Chief

The tricks behind CHARISMA

BARACK OBAMA HAS IT, BRAD PITT IS COVERED IN IT, MARTIN LUTHER KING, NELSON MANDELA, JOHNNY DEPP, WE COULD GO ON. CHARISMA. WHAT IS IT, AND HOW COULD YOU GET MORE OF IT? We have all heard of a ‘Charisma Coach’, or maybe you haven’t. But what do they teach, why do they teach it, and how can Charisma help you get what you want out of life? Executives at firms such as Deloitte, Google, Citigroup amongst others all regularly engage in these sessions, and can pay up to $100,000 a year to boost their X-Factor. But why? Whether you’re a political leader, seductress, or just want the ability to “inspire great enthusiasm and

devotion”, as one dictionary defines Charisma, it can be a great method to gain approval, or get what you want from someone. Charisma is all about flooding your brain with Oxytocin (the love hormone). It will transform the way you feel, and produce remarkably different body language. People will want to be near you. Some experts believe that just three sessions with a therapist can transform somebody into being a reasonably personable person, into somebody magnetic. But one thing

that is hard to fake, is the emotional connection with the other person. Truly charismatic people genuinely like other people. The emotional component of this is very hard to imitate. Being Charismatic is a personality trait, and as we know, personality traits are largely heritable. To be charismatic, is to radiate appeal, empathy, and charm, towards the other person or people around you. Workers use it to climb the corporate ladder, waitresses use it to gain more tips, men and women use it to gain sexual approval on dates and other personal moments. It’s a fascinating concept of adaption and psychological maneuvering. But using traits you already have is the key to fixing your charismatic output. Humor is a great way to show charisma, but only if you’re naturally humorous. The same goes for empathy. Charisma isn’t about ‘performance’. Use what you have to increase your stickiness, be emotionally connected to the other person, but deliver your personality in a way that leaves people wanting more. So, next time you’re out on a date with a guy or girl you are really attracted to, think about that inner voice, and show them what you have that is adorable, and frankly, addictive.

The Möbius Strip STORIES ARE LIFE. LIFE IS STORIES. WRITTEN BY JON NORRIS IG @NorrisJon / @The_Norris_Twins

THINK BACK TO THE TIME WHEN YOU APPLIED FOR YOUR FIRST GRADUATE JOB, OR YOUR FIRST MIDLEVEL EXECUTIVE MEETING, WHERE THE FIRST THING ON THE AGENDA WAS TO ‘TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF’. WE DEVELOP THIS NARRATIVE THAT SELLS US, A PICTURE IN OUR MINDS THAT WE’VE SELF-CREATED TO REFLECT UPON THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF OUR JOURNEY, AND THE VAST NOTIONS

THAT TYPICALLY DIVERT PEOPLES ATTENTION TO OUR STRENGTHS AND OUR LEARNED SKILLS THAT HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED ACROSS THIS EXPLORATION BOTH IN AND OUT OF WORK. WHAT WE CREATE IS A NARRATIVE THAT SELLS US AS UNIQUE AND SPECIAL INDIVIDUALS. YOU OFFER SOMETHING NOBODY ELSE HAS, YOUR BACKGROUND AND YOUR STORY.

In much the same way, brands are trying (and succeeding) in doing the same thing. Pioneers of selling their own user generated stories and life events through their own products and platforms. GoPro, a brand that has championed this behavior, succeeding in creating such compelling and untouchable consumer content surrounding the abilities of its products and the lifestyle the brand sells, and for a long time, what they had created was un-rivalled by market competitors. A few years have past and for many brands, developing similar content streams has become ever popular. From print magazines, to all-digital setups and YouTube channels, brands are finding that people are making choices and developing interests in products and services not just because they do what they want them to do, but brands

are also able to advocate a lifestyle that they as consumers strive to be a part of, look up to and want to explore within – it is not just about the functional element of a product or service anymore, it’s far beyond that.

We have United (Airlines) and ‘Rhapsody’ a luxury lifestyle and culture magazine designed and engineered especially for their upperclass traveller – it offers a first class exclusive treat into the ‘United life’ and has gained front page praise from the New York Times.

19

The next step in content marketing has already been taken by GoPro: the launch of a premium content licensing portal for global advertising brands and agencies to license premiere video and images. In essence, it is yet another way GoPro have created reward for its inspirational creator community.

The magic of storytelling and the emotional connection brought on by so many un-manufactured narratives highlight the need for people and brands to continue this development of collaboration between them both. For brands, it is a forward thinking natural progression where the opportunity totally outweighs the cost, and delivers lasting value too. September 2015 - BELLO

I REMEMBER BEING A YOUNG GIRL WALKING THROUGH UNIVERSAL STUDIOS IN FLORIDA AND FEELING EXCITED ABOUT HAVING BEEN CLOSE TO THE STAGES WHERE FAMOUS MOVIES HAD BEEN FILMED. It was one of those things that made me fall in love with the entertainment industry and gave me the push to become part of it. However, my biggest passion has always been music. Although my best musical interpretations happen in the shower, for me, songs and lyrics have become the most important

backdrop for key moments in my life, and traveling to Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando gave me some major musical flashbacks. Connecting with music is an inherent part of my personality and a method I use to stay focused and relaxed. I’m

sure many people feel that way. It’s one of those things that have the power to take you to a place in your life where you were happy, or make you relive past experiences in a melancholic way. Now, I’m old-school and that is one of the reasons why I love visiting Hard Rock Hotels. Even though Orlando is

20

such busy city, the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal did not feel touristy or overwhelming at all. Au contraire, it was like a melodic retreat in the middle of a very hectic season. Anywhere you go in Orlando, you encounter people from all over the world, and as exciting as that might be, it can become a bit too much once you are inside your home away from home. Roaming loud hallways is not my thing, and that is one of the many reasons why I loved the resort. The lounges, pool and halls are filled with soft rock tunes and dimmed lights, and the foyers and lobbies are decorated with one of a kind memorabilia from some of the most iconic and extraordinary musicians. From Joe Perry to Elton John, the guitars and outfits will transport you to another time in music history.

VACATIONING LIKE ROCK ROYALTY If there was ever a place where you could experience what the rock life means, it’s the Hard Rock Orlando. The exterior structure, which resembles the Hotel California from The Eagles song, is upscale yet cozy, giving you a sense of comfort with an added luxurious vibe. 21

The theme at the resort is cohesive throughout the property without it being cheesy. Small details such as room keys with Universal Resort inspired designs like Jurassic Park, Spiderman, Harry Potter, and Betty Boop, among others; as well as, drum sets and autographed guitars, put you in a fun spirit. The outdoor areas have everything you could need to have a delightful vacation. The pool has a section exclusive for smokers making it less annoying for those traveling with children, or anyone who is bothered by the smell. I mean, having to ask someone to turn off their cigarette is never an easy thing to do, so it’s great that the Hard Rock Orlando took that into consideration and found a way to accommodate all guests. There are private cabanas, a full service bar called The BeachClub, a sand area with beach chairs, a water slide and a kids’ pool, among other things to do.

The Grilled Teriyaki Beef Tenderloin Skewers on a bed of Sesame Rice Cake and Kimchee, and the Grilled Atlantic Salmon with Spinach, and Warm Greek Potato Salad with Olives and a Tomato Vinaigrette were my favorite dishes. Be prepared for a decadent dessert tray that you will not be able to turn down without trying. The chocolate cake was to die for!

The Kitchen is the restaurant to visit on the hotel because it has a superb menu and character visits. You can chat with Scooby Doo or Homer Simpson while having a delicious meal. Start with bacon wrapped bean sprouts, because you need your veggies and let’s face it: everything tastes better with bacon. September 2015 - BELLO

Then there’s the Rock Royalty Level. A concierge service where you can be upgraded to the best views on the exclusive 7th floor, choose larger suites like The Graceland which was fondly named after Elvis Presley’s home, and get access to the Club Lounge where you can enjoy food and drinks all day during your stay. Best part of all: only those staying on that floor are granted admission to the floor, giving you even more privacy and benefits.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF PERKS The Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Resort offers an array of advantages to guests to make the trip a hasslefree enjoyable experience. The complementary on-site water taxis operate from 7am to 2am, and they give you a beautiful river view while taking you to Universal Studios, CityWalk and Islands of Adventure. You can play, eat and dance to your heart’s desire without worrying about parking or driving. How incredibly convenient!

To top it off, included is an Express Lines ticket which saves you time and money since is an additional purchase with the regular admission ticket. But, since the Hard Rock Orlando is dedicated to set up a full-on rock star outing, when you stay there you can get priority seating at dining spots and at different shows. Imagine walking in a packed restaurant, show your room key, and be seated right away.

foodie challenge, so I’m beyond happy I visited the restaurant.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A COW MEETS A FISH?

The décor is super fun and modern. High-tech screens on the tables allow you to design your own fish and watch it swim on the digital wall fish tank, play games while you wait for your food, and even access the web from there. Onto the food! Start with Crab Rangoon Dip with wonton crisps and chili sauce, Big Al’s Yellowtail with dipping ponzu sauce, Parmesan Bacon Truffle Fries and Zipang Sparkling Sake.

That’s the million dollar question and it can only be answered at The Cowfish at CityWalk Universal Orlando. The Sushi Burger Bar is truly an innovative eatery with a concept that might sound odd at first, but is totally addicting once you try it. I have to admit that I was quite intrigued to eat there, and I do love a

Then get ready to indulge your palate in a festival of flavors and aromas. The King’s Roll and Mango-Cado Roll are classic dishes infused with fun ingredients, but the real showstoppers are the Burgushi plates. The High Class Hillbilly Roll comes with pulled BBQ pork and Doug’s Filet Roll is

One of the things that has made the parks even more popular are the additions of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hogsmeade located at Universal Studios and Dragon Alley located at Islands of Adventure. These attractions can get really busy, and with a huge wait line, thankfully, guests can get early admission to both theme parks and ride The Hogwarts Express that connects them.

The 3 Blue Men and the band that accompanies them, use drums to show different sounds and music genres, from rock to nursery rhymes. Screen graphics are used to engage the crowd and allow them to participate in the show. The spectacle is as funny as educational. With eye rolls, long stares and by imitating each other, they play with viewers while talking about important things. They explain oxytocin is released to boost a happier mood, and how images get converted in the brain. topped with seared filet mignon. Sounds extravagant, but trust me, you will not regret it. End your night with a spiked Cookies and Cream milkshake, yes it does have alcohol, and a Warm Coconut Almond Cake. You will feel as if you were flying on the clouds.

100 YEARS OF MOVIE MEMORIES Spiderman, Transformers, Minions and The Hulk are some of the beloved characters that you will get a chance to meet at Islands of Adventures or Universal Studios. As part of the immersion into the fantasy, each of the locations and rides have decorations and music that belong to that particular storyline, making you feel as if you are part of the experience.

From the never ending battle between good versus evil, to some of the most comedic dialogues on film, the colorful and musically synchronized fountains makes us relive great moments in movie history. The amazing firework show is a great way to close the night at the parks. The Blue Man Group is one of those can’t-miss shows at Universal Studios. The Interactive, funny, engaging 2 hour performance takes you on a tour through

In a very modern manner they use animation to portray how people can engage on real conversations. By expressing the interactions between 3D and 2D dimensions, they put things in perspective and make us think about the technology filled world we live in now, where most communications are done via screens or phones. Definitely a great way to reconnect with others and our inner child! Visit www.HardRockHotels.com/ Orlando to book your stay at Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando and find more information on the Universal Orlando Resort.

My favorite was Krustyland. A dream spot for fans of The Simpsons were you can play darts like Bart or have some Duff beer at Moe’s like Homer. The Cinematic Lightshow at Universal Studios is another portion of the itinerary that takes us through a journey in time. 23

TILDA SWINTON’S PHILOSOPHY Glamour As A Form Of Collaborative Art BY BRENT LAMBERT

credit: Francois Nars

YOU MAY KNOW OF LONDON-BORN KATHERINE MATHILDA SWINTON AS THE RENOWNED BRITISH ACTOR TILDA SWINTON, LAUDED FOR HER ECLECTIC ROLES IN BOTH INDEPENDENT AND MAINSTREAM FILMS. WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW IS THAT SWINTON IS AN INTELLECTUAL AND CREATIVE POWERHOUSE WHO HAS COMPLETELY REINVENTED THE CONCEPT OF THE HOLLYWOOD LEADING LADY WHILE ALSO REFRAMING THE DISCUSSION OF FASHION AND COUTURE AS AN EDGY ART FORM.

Sandro Kopp, a German painter with whom she has been in a relationship with since 2004. In an interview, Swinton commented on her domestic situation: “It’s the way we have been for nearly four years. I’m very fortunate. It takes some extraordinary men to make a situation like that work.” In a 2012 interview with Charlie Rose, Tilda explains how she very much considers fashion and glamour as a form of art -- and a collaborative one at that.

In 1983, she graduated from New Hall at Cambridge with a degree in Social and Political Sciences, and while there she joined the Communist Party of Great Britain. She has two honorary doctoral degrees: one from Napier University in Edinburgh (received in August 2006), and one from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow (received July 2006). Swinton was also a Contributing Editor to the literary magazine Zembla during her university career. After a few years with the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh and the Royal Shakespeare Company, Swinton embarked on her career in cinema. Her early film work included several roles for director Derek Jarman, notably War Requiem (1989), playing a nurse opposite Sir Laurence Olivier as an old soldier. In 1991, Swinton won the Volpi Cup Best Actress award for her role in 25

the postmodern film Edward II. Swinton also played the title role in Orlando, Sally Potter’s 1992 film version of the novel by Virginia Woolf, as well as the role of Emma Recchi in the Italian saga I Am Love (2009), the latter of which she also produced over the course of 11 years. In 2008 she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Karen Crowder in Michael Clayton alongside George Clooney. These days Swinton lives in Nairn, in the Highland area of Scotland, with Scottish painter John Byrne and their twin children: a son, Xavier, and a daughter, Honor. Her travel companion is often Javier Vallhonrat for Pomellato

Born to an Australian mother, and a Scottish father with distinguished military decorations, Swinton’s family tree is connected to the ancient AngloScots who can trace their lineage all the way back to the High Middle Ages. Swinton attended two independent schools during her youth, the West Heath Girls’ School (where she was in the same class as Diana, Princess of Wales), and also Fettes College for a brief period.

“My relationship with fashion is about my friendships,” she tells Rose. “[If I didn’t have friends] who made clothes I [doubt I] would wear anything other than a pair of old corduroys. But I happen to have friends who make amazing things.” While looking elegant as ever in a white silk blazer and matching silk slacks, Swinton goes on to say that “It’s an honor but it’s also quite selfish. It’s a way of being in company. [For example, by wearing this] I’m with my friend Anne Valérie Hash here.” For Swinton, glamour goes much deeper than being merely a surfacelevel form of expression alone. For her it is an inspiring form of art, partnership, friendship, and an opportunity to collaborate with like-minded artists and creators from all corners of the globe--just as she does in cinema. “What I love about cinema is that introspection -- as I love about poetry also -- is that feeling of a kind of inarticulacy, and looking for a way of saying unsayable things,” she tells Rose. “I think there is a relationship for me [between these things] about being a performer.” Swinton might be likely to be the first to agree that glamour and and fashion design could also be seen as an elaborate and deeply meaningful form of performance art. In this sense, Tilda Swinton is in so many ways a living masterpiece. September 2015 - BELLO

Jess Glynne’s

‘I CRY WHEN I LAUGH’ B E S T Pop Album Of 2015 IS THE

It may be September, but Hiko Mitsuzuka (@TheFirstEcho) has already declared the British songstress’s debut as one of the year’s best in music.

After making a name for herself by vocally appearing on Clean Bandit’s Grammy-winning “Rather Be” and “Real Love” and Route 94’s “My Love,” three of the best tracks to come out of 2014, she’s finally releasing her debut album, the magnificent I Cry When I Laugh. Early 2015 gave us the airy and shiny house groove of “Hold My Hand” while this past summer delivered the uplifting “Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself” and the Tinie Tempah collaboration “Not Letting Go.” All three of these tracks appear on the album, and all three sound as if they were born out of a 1995 jam session. (To clarify, that’s a very good thing.) Of course, all of this praise could be attributed to 90s nostalgia, which is all the rage as we move further into the 2010s. But after listening to the rest of this fantastic collection of inspired tunes, Glynne’s soulful vocals are undeniably a perfect match for the silky smooth production and lyricism that runs throughout the dozen-plus set. By pop music connoisseur standards, it’s as if Adele and Betty Who had a love child and raised it on early-90s R&B and house. If you need proof, start with the aptly titled “Right Here.” ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com

But it’s not all Clinton-era throwbacks. There’s 80s-tinged funk, as evidenced by the very Chaka Khan-esque “You Can Find Me” and the finger-shaking anthem “It Ain’t Right.” And then there are more stirring exercises in vulnerability in tracks like “Take Me Home” and “Saddest Vanilla,” a gorgeous duet with the mesmerizing Emeli Sande. Finally, if you’re looking for a more mature alternative to Taylor Swift’s summer smash “Bad Blood,” make sure to check out Glynne’s track of the same name, a more subtle (and poetic) approach to dealing with

haters -- this time with a Western Asian flavor. To stand back and observe the album in its entirety (The Deluxe Edition includes some worthy bonus tracks, including a soaring acoustic rendition of “My Love”) is to fully realize that I Cry When I Laugh represents a rarity in today’s pop music landscape: a fully realized masterwork that delivers on all emotional levels. A definite addition to the Best of 2015 list. I Cry When I Laugh drops in the U.S. on September 11. Photo by Frazer Harrison / Getty Images

2015 should go down in music history as The Year of Jess Glynne.

2015 FALL PLAYLIST

WHILE YOU BRACE YOURSELF FOR PUMPKIN-FLAVORED EVERYTHING AND WAIT FOR THAT PROVERBAL AUTUMN CHILL, HERE ARE SOME TRACKS TO ACCENTUATE YOUR UPCOMING SWEATER SEASON. 1. “Levels” by Nick Jonas - Let’s kick things off with some strutting, fingersnapping funkiness (and slight 80s sheen), courtesy of pop’s hottest male solo artist.

6. “Paradise” by Benny Benassi feat. Chris Brown - The EDM single of the season belongs to this collaboration that features a progressive build that explodes into an electro drop. 7. “What Do You Mean?” Justin Bieber - Get ready folks, because the Biebs is back. With his attitude seemingly in check and a newfound maturity bleeding into his increasingly EDM-twinged sound, pop’s former wonder boy is clearly ready to reclaim his throne.

2. “Save My Soul” by JoJo - The pop wunderkind returns with the release of three singles (#tringle), and “Soul” is the clear (and powerful) frontrunner. Someone get this girl on the radio STAT!

3. “Ain’t Got Far To Go” by Jess Glynne - The early-90s are alive and well in this R&B-funk masterpiece by the British songstress.

8. “High By The Beach” Lana Del Rey - With a so-wacky-it’s-wonderful music video that’s already notched over 14 million views and a sound that harkens back to 90’s Portishead, this jam will leave you pining for those breezy summer nights at the beach (and of course, those herbal refreshments that always make everything better). 9. “All Around The World” - Natalie La Rose feat. Fetty Wap – Both coming off of smash summer hits, Jersey’s own Fetty Wap, and the pride of Amsterdam, Natalie La Rose, are back with another multi-culti R&B banger that will have you humming the hook way into the winter months.

4. “Back Together” by Robin Thicke feat. Nicki Minaj - Quite possibly the best pop single Rick Astley never released. If only the music video were just as bubbly.

27

5. “Run Away With Me” by Carly Rae Jepsen - Carly’s is doing her damnedest to avoid a sophomore slump, and she’s proving herself on her second album, EMOTION, and with this shimmering throwback to late-80s pop.

WHAT DO LAAPLAND AND KAAOKOLAND HAVE IN COMMON, IF NOT BEING ONE OF THE LAST REMAINING WILD SPOTS ON THE PLANET. THE FIRST IS HOME TO AN ARTISAN MANUFACTURER FROM ARCTIC CIRCLE. SECOND IS WHERE OUR JOURNEY IN AFRICA BEGINS. INDEED IT IS WINTER TIME IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF THIS CONTINENT AND NIGHTS ARE FREEZING. NONETHELESS DAYS ARE HOT. HOW DO WE COPE INTO THIS WARM, COMPRESSED WOOL, HANDMADE, RACCOON BELTED JACKET? WITH LOTS OF LOVE TOWARDS OUR WORK. WHERE ABUNDANCE MEETS THE EYE, THIS BOUTIQUE MADE SPLENDOR SHINES IN ITS NATURAL ELEMENT. “Yes those bullets are real, but for your own protection only” Barge cruises along the Linyanti River are on offer on the colonial-style Queen Sylvia barge, generally with sundowners in hand. The river is ideal for numerous and diverse species of birds and are a magnet for game in the dry winter months. Named for Scandinavian royalty, this luxurious and stylish camp overlooks the oxbow-shaped Kings Pool Lagoon and Linyanti River system.

Nine well-appointed rooms of canvas and thatch each have a large en-suite bedroom, outdoor shower and lounge. A veranda with private plunge pool and separate thatched sala soak up the views. The lounge and dining areas are set on expansive decks, and there is a pool and an open-air ‘kgotla’ (boma) for evening dining under the stars. Activities include day and night game drives, walks and elegant boat cruises along the Linyanti River. In the dry

season, guests can spend their siesta watching game come down to drink at the camp’s unique underground hide, where the water is at eye level. Seeing elephant feet and trunks almost within touching distance while safely inside is an experience that transcends that of an ordinary safari. A luxurious and historic safari base in the middle of Africa’s highest density of elephants Wild dog and leopard are known to patrol the area, seeking its abundant antelope A sundowner cruise down the Linyanti River on the Queen Sylvia is a breathtaking experience The Linyanti Wildlife Reserve has abundant wildlife in a wide variety of species, but is most noted for its very large elephant population which can reach enormous densities during the dry winter months. Other game is abundant, such as impala, lechwe, kudu, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and bushbuck, and their predators: lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and spotted hyaena. Rarer species such as sable and roan antelope also emerge from the woodlands during the dry season. Birding is spectacular.

“Should I stay or should I go now?” Sperrgebiet translates from the German to “Forbidden Area”. It’s also known as Diamond Area 1 and it’s the exclusive diamond mining area of southwestern Namibia. It extends along the Namibian coast from the South African border at Oranjemund for about 200 miles north … about 45 miles north of Luderitz. It covers about 10,400mi² in land area and the public has not been allowed within its boundaries without a special permit since 1908 when it was created. It extends inland about 60 miles and out into the Atlantic Ocean about 5-6 miles. There are no ports or anchorages along this stretch of coast at which we are allowed to stop. The German government originally created the Sperrgebiet in 1908 in its German South West Africa colony, after diamonds were first discovered. During WWI, Germany lost the territory to South Africa and the South African government gave control of the mining rights to DeBeers. After Namibia’s independence, Namibia partnered with DeBeers to form Namdeb Diamond Corporation. Sperggebiet remains. In fact, Namibia’s Diamond Act of 1999, very explicitly outlines the rights of the diamond mining industry, the allowed legal actions of diamond inspectors and the laws governing uncut diamonds, as well as the penalties for possessing them illegally … stiff fines and lengthy imprisonment. I read that “some people in Namibia serve longer sentences for diamond theft than others do for murder”. Only about 5% of the Sperggebiet is actually actively mined, the rest acts as kind of a buffer

29

territory. The public exclusion from the area for decades has maintained much of the area as untouched. Granted it’s semi-desert and desolate, but in actuality, it’s a bio-diversity “hotspot”. “About 1,050 plant species are found in the Sperrgebiet, which is 25 percent of the entire flora of Namibia. In 2004, Namdeb tranferred control

of a large section of the Sperrgebiet to the Namibian government with the intent of reclaiming and re-vegetating the land and creating Sperggebiet National Park. In 2009, the park was formally opened, however unless you have a permit and go with a nationally certified tour guide, you are still not allowed to enter.

“A walking safari is only for the most experienced guides.” Savuti Camp is situated in the private Linyanti Concession along the Savute Channel, famous for the fact that between 1980 and 2008 it stopped flowing altogether, creating an unusual ribbon of grassland. Surprisingly, the Channel began to flow once more, becoming a deep, clear waterway harbouring hippo and aquatic life while wildlife had to adapt to a new source of water and all the opportunities and menaces it brought with it. Nature walks with skilled, armed guides are wonderful ways of getting close to nature and observing the smaller details you miss when travelling by vehicle. ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com

The Linyanti has diverse and prolific wildlife, but is most noted for its very large elephant population which can reach enormous densities during the dry winter months. Other game concentrations are also high, and apart from abundant plains game, species such as roan and sable antelope, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyaena, black-backed jackal and wild dog may also be encountered. This area can also be excellent for the rarelyseen aardvark and aardwolf. Birding is spectacular. This intimate camp’s en-suite accommodation is in seven large walkin tents that are raised off the ground and face onto the Channel. From the

camp’s thatched dining area, a small pool and large viewing area with fire pit extend outwards on raised wooden decks, providing a wonderful view of the water and its wildlife. Savuti Camp has front row seats to watch all the drama that unfolds on the Channel The Savute area harbours one of the densest dry-season concentrations of elephant in Africa With two-thirds of the Savute Channel located in the Wilderness Safaris concession, guests have exclusive access to abundant game and geological marvels. 30

‘’Starring with the coolest kats in the Kalahari!’’ Suricates are a highly sociable species living in troops of up to fifty individuals. They live in burrows which they excavate themselves. They feed on insects and other invertebrates which they hunt on busy excursions around their territories. There will always be individuals on watch whilst the troop is feeding or on the move as they are susceptible to attack from predators such as Jackal and birds of prey. One of the most lovable creatures in Africa have been cartooned as such in movies and stories. Botswana is easily the best place to see Suricates and there is lodge with resident researchers doing work on the Suricates. This allows some of the most dramatic interaction with this special creature.

While on a trapping expedition in the Makgadikgadi Pans during the 60’s, Jack Bousfield stumbled upon a site that so captured his imagination, he set up camp under an acacia with the unshakeable expectation that others would feel the same... As a homage to the vision of his father, Ralph, his son, and his partner Catherine established Uncharted Africa Safari Co starting with Jack’s Camp which was refurbished at the beginning of 2003 - in a traditional East African 1940’s safari style. Ten green roomy and stylish canvas tents with en-suite bathrooms and indoor and outdoor showers have been fashioned in classical style and are set into a palm grove creating an oasis of civilization in what can be the harshest of stark environments. Persian rugs underfoot and cool cotton sheets form

a striking contrast with the rugged wilderness viewed from the comfort of one’s own verandah. During the wet season the landscape transforms. Clouds of flamingo and other migratory birds descend from the heavens to decorate the watery grasslands. The Makgadikgadi is not without drama and, here, the emphasis is on observing the intricacies of a truly unique ecosystem to which Uncharted Africa Safari Co. has added stylish adaptations of its own. A safari to Jack’s Camp is also a complete desert experience focusing on species unique to the area such as aardvark, gemsbuck and springbuck. It is the only place where guests are virtually guaranteed to see the rare and elusive brown hyaena and be able to walk through the Kalahari with a gang of habituated but, wild meerkats!

– and superb views of the classic Okavango Delta floodplains that surround the camp. Meals and evening drinks are enjoyed in the lounge, bar and dining area overlooking a permanently flowing channel or under the stars in a traditional African boma. For those hot days there is a small plunge pool in which to cool off. Xigera is a true water camp: This is the land of the sitatunga antelope and Pel’s fishing-owl. Waterbirds are seen in large numbers including rufousbellied heron and the secretive whitebacked night-heron. Other special birds are greater swamp-warbler,

coppery-tailed coucal and Luapula cisticola brown firefinch, swamp boubou, Hartlaub’s babbler and western banded snake-eagle. One may be surprised by the presence of lion, leopard, hyaena and buffalo as they wade and swim between islands in search of food. There is no better way of viewing game and capturing the essence of the Okavango than by traditional mokoro (dugout canoe). The Okavango-born guide and poler will reveal the wiles and secrets of living in the Delta while you spot tiny frogs and colorful water birds.

“Getting sand in your shoes should be the least of your concerns.” The Namib Desert is commonly referred to as the world’s oldest desert as it has been around for about 43 million years. The desert is a large expanse of moving gravel plains and dunes of all shapes and sizes that span along the entire coastline. The most dominant type of dune are linear dunes, followed by crescent shaped dunes which are more common along the coast and clusters of star shaped dunes prevailing more in the Sossusvlei area in the eastern part of Namibia. The entire western part of Namibia is comprised of the desert which flows beyond the borders of Namibia into southern Angola and also to the northern Cape Province of South Africa. Part of the desert, towards the centre, incorporates the Namib Naukluft Park, which is the largest park in Namibia and also the third largest in Africa. The park these

ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com

days, is a combination of the Namib Desert Park and the Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park as well as sections of the Diamond Area. The combination of all these areas adds up to about 50 000 square kilometres. The Naukluft Mountain area was initially created as a sanctuary for the Hartmann’s mountain zebra. The Sossusvlei area of the desert is an always popular option, the dunes are gorgeous and are a tourist magnet, other attractions of interest in this area include the Hidden Vlei and Dead Vlei. It is little wonder that Deadvlei, a clay pan in the Namib-Naukfluft Park in Namibia attracts many photographers willing to risk the arduous journey in order to capture its intense beauty. At dawn, when the trees are silhouetted against the lemon and apricot colored sand dunes it is a perfect time for photographers to take advantage of

what they call the Golden Hour. The often cloudless, dazzlingly blue sky just adds to the stunning dichotomy of color. The pan was formed when the nearby Tsauchab River flooded. This created pools and allowed the acacia and camel thorn trees to grow and flourish. Then, nine hundred years ago, the climate changed and the area was hit by drought. The sand dunes encroached on the pan, effectively cutting off the trees from the river. What happened next is something quite amazing. The trees did not, as you might expect, become petrified which is where the organic materials of a tree are slowly replaced by minerals. Rather, the sun scorched the trees, rendering them as black as charcoal. The dryness of the area was such that the wood could not decompose because it was so dry. The trees of Deadvlei are desiccated rather than petrified.

“Winter time in Africa and swimming calls for special measures. Situated in the heart of the Kaokoland Mountains is the spectacular Marienfluss Valley, home to the Himba people. Set in this valley, which stretches north all the way until it reaches the banks of the Kunene River, is the Okahirongo River Camp. Perfectly sited amongst several hills, it overlooks the Otupambua Rapids, with stupendous views of surrounding landscapes, dotted with elegant palm trees. Catering for only a maximum of 14 guests, Okahirongo River Camp is the ideal fly-in destination for tourists and travellers seeking an ultimate and exclusive hideaway in the spectacular and most northern area of Kaokoveld. The main complex at the river camp has been constructed right at the top of the rapids. It has 2 lounges, a library, curio shop and a dining room with fabulous views of the river. Centrally located here is the swimming pool, and the spacious, beautiful sun deck is a great spot to relax and unwind. Meals here are inspired by a fusion of Africa & Italy and are always accompanied by fine South African wines. The strong flow of Kunene river underneath in its dramatic green color amids this desert terrain is hiding one of the most notorious crocodiles on earth. A reason more to enjoy the lounging at the pool. In terms of wildlife Kaokoland is probably most famous for its desert elephant. The possibility of obtaining a glimpse, however brief, of a herd of desert dwelling elephants is what draws most people to the area. Although the desert dwelling elephants are not a separate sub species they have adapted to their extremely harsh environment, the only other place in Africa where elephants live in such harsh conditions is in Mali on the edge of the Sahara Desert. The secret of their survival in the arid wastelands is an intimate knowledge of their limited food and water resources. During the dry periods they will even 35

dig deep holes to obtain water and in this way also provide other animals with water. Unlike other elephants

which drink daily, these ones have been observed going without water for up to four days September 2015 - BELLO

“The raccoon fur represented a certain type of attraction for the cheetahs while picturing”

it was because of the re-introduction of various antelope species, favoured by these fleet-footed cats.

The cheetah originally occupied most of Africa except for the equatorial forest and the true desert, (Sahara & Namib) as well as much of the Middle East and India, where it became extinct in the early 1950’s. It is estimated that there are less than 7,500 cheetah left in the world, and about 6,000 of these are found in Southern Africa. According to a 1970 study, the numbers of cheetah in Namibia had improved, due apparently to the removal of lion and hyena, by farmers. In some cases,

More recent surveys have shown that Namibia has 2000-2500 cheetah, of which 95% are on private (game of cattle) farms. Unfortunately, some farmers have continued to shoot cheetah because of their tendency to raid stock, particularly where their natural prey species are scarce, or absent. Whilst the current figures do not make the cheetah endangered in the absolute sense of the word, the extraordinary degree of genetic uniformity that these cats have been

shown to exhibit, raises the possibility that a disease could devastate wild populations. Otjitotongwe Cheetah Farm is dedicated to the preservation of the cheetah species. It is situated in north-eastern Namibia, 24kms east of Kamanjab. Home to a non-profit organization it aims at conserving cheetahs in a natural environment. The 7,000ha farm, has both tame and wild cheetahs, many bought from farmers to prevent them from being killed. The farm offers superb photographic opportunities at scheduled cheetah feedings, and also offers guided game drives to view wild cheetah.

“Let’s all get crazy and paint that jacket red” The Himba people who inhabit Kaokoland are the descendants of the earliest Herero’s who migrated into this area in the 16th century. The Himba are an ancient tribe of semi nomadic pastoralists, many of whom still live and dress according to ancient traditions and live in scattered settlements throughout Kaokoland. They are a slender and statuesque people. The women especially are noted for their 37

unusual sculptural beauty, enhanced by intricate hairstyles and traditional adornments. The homes of the Himba are simple cone shaped structures of saplings bound together with palm leaves and plastered with mud and dung. A family may move from one home to another several times a year to seek grazing for their goats and cattle. Clothes, hairstyle and jewelry are all of particular significance to the Himba and play a significant role in their tradition and culture. Newborn babies are adorned with pearl necklaces and

when they are a little older, bangles made of beaten copper and shells are added. The proud Himba women take several hours for beauty care every morning, rubbing their bodies with a cream, which consists of rancid butterfat and ochre powder, scented with the resin of the Omuzumba bush. A treatment which protects their skins against the harsh desert climate lends the body an intense reddish shine, which corresponds to the Himba ideal of beauty. September 2015 - BELLO

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER OPENED TO OVER 14 MILLION VIEWERS, AND ITS DVR RATINGS BROKE RECORDS SHORTLY AFTER THE PILOT’S AIRING. SITTING AT HOME IN LOS ANGELES, A PHILLY NATIVE MYSELF, WHERE THE SHOW IS SET, I WAS JUST ONE OF THE VIEWERS WHO HELPED MAKE SUCH A SOARING PREMIERE NIGHT POSSIBLE, AND LIKE EVERY MURDER FAN, I ANXIOUSLY AWAITED EPISODE AFTER EPISODE, MANY TIMES WATCHING IT LIVE (IN A TIME RULED BY TIVO AND ITUNES SEASON PASSES). LIKE THE REST OF AMERICA, I HAD AN ABSOLUTE RELENTLESS OBSESSION WITH THE STEAMY AND OFTENTIMES HORRIFYING DRAMA. IT WAS ANOTHER PIECE OF GOLD STRAIGHT OUT OF SHONDALAND.

The finale of season one, which held no shortage of shock value, aired one day short of my 25th birthday. Being the die-hard fan that I was, I considered it nothing short of a gift. Something to watch and thoroughly enjoy before the already announced season two premiere, more than five months into the future. When speaking to an actor, there is always that element of often times having to extract the right answer or the good answer. Speaking with Alfred was the exception, and there have been a few. It was a conversation so complete that I felt compelled to present this interview as unedited as possible, to truly convey his being as he did to me over the course of an hour over the phone on a Friday morning. Speaking to me completely outside of his native English accent, the recovering social media-ist, and my favorite face of the 2014 TV season revealed to me the secret behind his perfect american accent and what it truly is like being a part of the now infamous “Keating Five.” I invite you into my conversation with Alfred Enoch. DA: You’re experience on the show and its ensuing success has been pretty interesting. How would you describe it all? AE: It’s been really great for me, personally. Because, it’s a chance to be working with excellent people. The 41

cast is great, across the board. I mean, to get to work with someone like Viola [Davis] which is a privilege. Naturally that’s what you want to be doing, you want to be exposing yourself to as many different people who work in different ways, and bring different things. But, also people whose work is really top notch, that’s how you learn. That’s the process of developing your work. So, it’s been really gratifying on a personal level. It’s also surprising because I remember when I just got the script I thought.. this would be great. But I thought it was very implausible. The likelihood of it just seemed minimal. I’d done Harry Potter, and mostly theater afterwards, with little bits of TV. I was just thinking, what’s the next play that’s going to come along. So, doing a TV show in the states, playing an american character would be a jump from that. And it was shown on US TV. I had never worked on the accent before, for all sorts of reasons, it seemed really implausible. It has turned itself into normality at this stage. By second theason, you acclimate, and it’s like sure, this really is what’s happening.

DA: Tell me what was your reaction when you found out who killed Lila Standgard? AE: I was surprised, but the show is in the business of surprising you, right? That’s a big part of what I think makes it horrific and exciting to people. So yeah, it’s a surprising event because I think

that it ties people that you wouldn’t think have much to do with that, to that offense. The writers, they sort of provide you with a lot of shock factor and a lot of twists. But from a viewer’s perspective, the interesting things about those twists is it’s not a resolution, it’s the beginning of a new set of questions. It’s like, why is he involved? What happened? why did that that come to be the state of affairs? I think that’s something that’s consistent over the course of the show. It’s a good way of surprising people. It’s a formal twist above the actual context twist. You’re asking people who did it? But this formal twist, this surprise is moving the goal post. It encourages a new set of questions. Because the question you’ve just been provided an answer for has just become obsolete.

DA: Kind of like you’ve been asking the wrong question all along? AE: Exactly. Of course, you have to find that out to start asking the next questions. But, I think it’s dangled geniusly in a way that it’s like, you’re coming to the end of the road! It’s the moment of satisfaction! The end of the movie, the end of the book, where it’s all just put together. The explanation-finally. Then, Ah-ha! and we keep on going! Which makes it both satisfying and frustrating. You get to the crowning event and it blows everything wide open. DA: I feel like you more than anyone in the cast gets to act opposite Viola September 2015 - BELLO

on the show. You’re both great. What are those moments like for you? When you’re in the zone and the director yells action! The dynamics between both characters is so wild. What’s that like for you to explore as an actor? AE :I can describe it as the most satisfying and great to play. That relationship is put under a lot of scrutiny by the writers I say, and there are always questions about it; and that’s always useful. The best thing about it I think is that it still maintains a level of ambiguity in the way that they’re [writers] writing it. Partly because a lot of the questions that are brought up during their interactions aren’t always resolved. What’s the nature of this relationship? Is there more to it than this pragmatism on her part? She has a student who finds out she’s having an affair and asks him to keep it secret. She’s just a pragmatic person. She has a problem and it needs fixing, so she solves it. It’s interesting to have something accidental at the genesis of it, and there isn’t a straightforward answer or explanation for the audience. It’s an interesting underburn. I think those kinds of questions and ambiguities leaves a lot to tap into. It’s in constant flux, which is the nature of the show itself. Everything happens really fast, there are a lot of events and people’s relationships change with each-other from week to week. In that particular relationship, with the time that it’s given, and not necessarily with the amount of scenes, but the ways the scenes are treated, it allows there to be a lot of weight between the two. Moving between those opposing parameters is what makes it really fun. Them being forced together and then being in conflict again. It’s fun shipping between those and still trying to incorporate the element that Annalise has still done things for Wes to be grateful of, for the audience to be grateful for and viceversa. DA: There’s definitely the whole aspect, so often during the show of “what’s going on here,” which is part of the reason It kept me coming back for more. 45

AE: The writers throw a lot into the pot, so there’s a lot to choose from and a lot to work with. It’s always nice having a scene that’s a two-hander. I really enjoyed the work I did with Katie [Findlay] last year as well. You’re in a scene that’s just you and someone else. It’s a different dynamic than a scene with the whole group, during the case of the episode for example. It’s faster, and the information’s coming out and we’ve got somewhere to get to. When you have two characters together and they’re trying to deal with something that’s more integral to them, that’s exciting stuff. DA: There are so many actors whose accents oftentimes takes away from the reality of the show. That’s not the case with you. Has your American accent become second nature? AE: Absolutely. It’s the advantage I guess of the way I decided to go about it. I’m very indebted to all the dialect coaches I have. Who worked with me and helped me specify and correct things and hone in on certain sounds. The first level is learning to make it muscular me. Genuinely, sounds are coming from different parts of your mouth, you’re learning to use your mouth in certain ways. Ultimately you’re correcting and changing something that you have a lifetime of experience in. It’s tricky. There was that element and sort of the beginning of that journey. The next thing is making that effortless, which I was very mindful of. I got to Philadelphia to do the pilot and I thought, it’s not good being able to do this accent, I needed to have it down. Not, yes I can say this line in an american accent, meanwhile thinking about that while I was saying the line during a scene. So, I decided to use it all the time, which is a bit of a weird thing to do. Even when I’m off set, I talk in the accent. Unless I’m doing press, and people are hearing my voice, I don’t want to trick people so I speak in what is my original accent. The irony is that I talk in my american accent for the majority of the year. I do the american more

than I do my british. It helps, it means I’m not coming to set and thinking, oh I have to put this sound right at the back of my mouth, or I have to round my lips for this sound and make sure I get enough R. DA: Is the obsession in the UK with the series as it is here in the US? AE: In terms of the popularity of the show? It is, yeah! I was surprised. I’m not a pessimist, but I oblige myself to be for my own protection [laughs]. We did the pilot and everyone thought it was going to go, and there I was saying “hmm, it might not.” Desperately trying to remind myself of the possibility, just so I wouldnt be dissapointed. I had the same thoughts and expectations back in England. I didn’t know where and when it would air. It’s on abc at 10pm here, which is amazing. Primetime, a main network channel, people are bound to see it. Back in England, I had no idea. It’s aired on the Universal Channel here and I think it’s done great. They’ve done a good job at marketing it and presenting it to people. I think the other thing is that Shonda [Rhimes] has a fanbase. Sure, Pete [Nowalk] is the creator and the helmsman of our show, but Shonda has her input, it’s part of a family, and I think a lot of people tune into that brain. She’s done shows that have been incredibly successful and I think people want to see what comes out of the hat next I guess. Her appeal in that respect is international. Now I go home to England and people recognize me above everything for the show, which is nice. DA: What’s life like outside the social media bubble? Because you have zero social accounts. AE: Restful! That’s how I’d like to imagine it, certainly for me [laughs]. I’m easily distracted, so when I did use facebook for example, I’d find myself going on it, for what?Ii don’t know, to see what people were doing? Or reply to messages or something like that [laughs]. I never really learned to touch-type. I’m one of those people September 2015 - BELLO

who calls people on the phone, rather than writing a three line text. I want to be talking to someone, I want to be hearing their voice; I just find it more personal. The other thing is, I’m just bad at technology. So, when I have to reply to an e-mail, I know it’s going to take me ten times as long as it would anybody else! Because I can’t just get it out. It gives you time to think about it, or rephrase. The same goes for textmessages. Partly for that reason it would take me ages to reply to someone. In that little window, since it was taking so long, I’d say, well, why not see what blah blah blah did on his holiday. I got so easily distracted. All of the sudden, two hours have passed and I’m looking at people I don’t even know, and I know all about their vacation [laughs]. I think it would be the same if I were on twitter or instagram. It would be a nightmare. I would never get anything done. DA: I think that’s hilarious. However, you’re so lucky that you’re exempt from that, because it’s an incredibly easy hole to fall into. AE: Do you use it? Do you like it? DA: I do, but I’ve been in New York for the past three weeks and I’ve found that I’m on my phone even more, because I’m so curious as to what everyone in LA is doing, when I don’t really need to know such a thing. It’s very easy to take over. AE :I know exactly what you mean. It’s the sense of possibility. If you couldn’t find out what people in LA were doing, you’d be fine, and you’d go around enjoying New York. Most of the time, it’s something you’d never miss. By having been acclimated to it, it’s different. But there’s no need to see what Bobby T is doing on his holiday in spain. It’s not vital, but you can, so you will check. DA: Even in the sense of constantly looking up information on your phone

that could surely wait till you’re at home. AE: I used to love that space of not being able to look something up instantly. I resisted getting a smartphone. Everyone had one, but I didn’t want one. I had a Nokiah. It makes calls and sends texts, that’s all I need I thought. There was no question of replying now or later, or googling this or that.I just had to do it once I was back at home. But it’s become so expected. Everyone’s expecting a reply to an e-mail much quicker. You can’t just be like, well, I have an old phone, I’ll get back to you in two days because I’ll be out of town. You do that now, and someone will be flabbergasted. So in the end, you’re kind of just scooped along for the ride, like I have, in terms of getting a smart phone. It just encroaches on the more immediate way of spending time with people. Even without social media, I’m right there with everyone else on my phone, while sitting in a circle. DA: At the end of the season, your character Wes is put on the spot and forced to deal with Rebecca over everyone else. Annalise tells him, this is your girlfriend, you deal with this. He goes through waves of keeping it together quite nicely, and also cracking at times. What would that have been like for you? AE: I’d be a mess! He’s handled it really well! With all that’s happened in season one, it’s ridiculous. The writers are praised evil puppeteers. I’ve been thinking into this analogy a lot recently. They’re sitting across from each other in the writer’s room, with water bottles and coffees, having been up all night writing. I see them as something like a renaissance painting, having a nice time talking, and toying with the mortals downstairs [laughs]. That’s what it is really, they’re taking the lives of these characters and throwing them obstacle after obstacle and challenge after challenge. That’s what makes it exciting. It occurred to me as well as

amused me because it’s very much like that. This authority, and classical God figure is setting tasks for Hercules to complete. Then you throw in the have the lions and so forth. It’s a good parallel I think. Which makes it for a hard time for all the characters and Wes is right up there. During the first season, are you kidding? if that was me, I’d be in pieces. But the other side of it is, what choice did they have? They just have to keep going. Which is something I respect about Wes. He’s had so much thrown at him. Some of the others get to the point where they can’t continue. He’s fighting and has a resilience and a vitality which is deeply impressive. The night of the murder, he’s done it, and he has the most important person to him, to protect. The stakes are through the roof, so he’s got to find that application. It’s a question of preserving your freedom, getting away with what you did, in this case a murder. That’s the highest stake of all. I wouldn’t be nearly as impressive in the set of circumstances that he was exposed to. I would hope not to find myself around a woman whose job is to uphold the law but is subverting it all the time.I would be pretty compelled to stay away from that person. I’d do a better job than Wes in that respect. DA: Come season two, you’ll be answering some questions, while also diving into a new mystery. What can you tell me about that? AE: The first episode going back in we were all very much “what happens now”.I can tell you it’s good. It sets everything going again and it doesn’t really stop. There’s a lot there and a lot to keep people intrigued. For some characters we’ll see their backstory, and others, where we are now and how they’re dealing with what’s been put in front of them. How To Get Away With Murder returns Thursday September 24th, 10PM.

BRAD’S BUZZ BY BRAD LIBERTI, ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR

1. Sicario After delivering the cinematic one-two punch of 2013’s harrowing, Prisoners, and 2014’s hypnotic, Enemy, Canada’s Dennis Villeneuve has proven himself to be arguably the most exciting filmmaker working today. For his latest effort, he’s recruited a tough-as-nails Emily Blunt to explore the terrifying US/Mexico border wars. It’s not exactly light fare, but in this visionary director’s hands it’s guaranteed to be nothing short of mesmerizing.

2. The Walk If you missed 2008’s Oscar Winning doc, Man On Wire you may not know much about the incredible, possibly insane Philippe Petit or his death defying walk between the World Trade Center Towers in the early 70’s. Do yourself a favor... go watch it. Then tell me you’re not psyched to see Robert Zemeckis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt tackle this unbelievable, utterly true tale.

3. Scream Queens What pop culture addict out there isn’t at least curious to see if this star-studded, decidely over-the-top ‘horror’ series from Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy can measure up to the deafening buzz? Or deliver on it’s promise to successfully mix horror and hijinks in a way not seen since 1996’s Scream? I know I’ll be watching.

4. The Grinder Easily the most talked-about - and potentially great - new sitcom of the fall season, this Odd Couple-esq comedy starring Rob Lowe as a no BS TV lawyer and Fred Savage as his brother - a real life legal eagle - might actually exceed expectations.

5. Honeymoon - Lana Del Rey Everyone’s favorite So-Cal sexpot is back and she’s sadder than ever, but if the first two singles off her highly anticipated new album (the gorgeously haunting “Honeymoon” and instanty catchy “High By the Beach”) are any indication, this is one downward spiral worth jumping on.
