EDITOR’S
note,
FEBRUARY, 05, 2016
Dear BELLO MAG Reader, I know we are living in a time of fear and uncertainty. Now, more than ever, we must stand together against hatred and injustice. Remember there is always someone out there with hopes, dreams, and goals, just like you. We must have our voices heard and support each other’s causes because after all: we are all in this together. Let your soul and spirit be uplifted by the compassion shown by many, instead of taken down by the unkindness shown by few. Let that be your strength and motivation to keep going, and be there for others. Become the light you need and the love you seek, because we should stand up not for ourselves, but for others. Much Love,

Top 8 Picks: DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY BY BRENT LAMBERT During a recent trip to Mexico I found myself completely engulfed in Thinking Fast & Slow, the astonishing 2011 book written by Daniel Kahneman, who won the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics. So how, exactly, could a psychology whiz win a Nobel Prize in Economics? Kahneman’s groundbreaking research into the human mind led to the discovery of the two systems that drive the way we think, and how bias secretly controls much of our decision-making: System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. His discovery cast an entirely new light on the psychology of financial risk vs. those who prefer a slow, more calculated approach. You can grab your copy on Amazon here: www.amzn.to/29tMDkr.

A fairy tale full of love, lavishness and unparalleled grandeur

Copenhagen has most of what anybody needs in life. It is my takeaway from the short few days I spent enjoying the laps of luxury at the Hotel d’Angleterre, in the Danish capital. The traditional Scandinavian streets and the wonderful people that frequent all corners of the city, the calm yet bustling atmosphere, and the special character that exists across Copenhagen, all make it one of the travel destinations of 2016 for me, and a city that you absolutely must visit. #143 issue - BELLOmag.com

We made our way up in the elevator to the most interesting reception floor, on floor 102, which was magnificently decorated for the holidays. The hotel feels rather more like a boutique luxury mall, than a hotel, with an escalator down to the Lounge and Bar Restaurant from reception.
The Lounge & Bar Restaurant The restaurant itself is set amongst a backdrop of Victoria Harbour, with two main crystal lighting features owning the room. A cocktail bar in the middle, serving all sorts of delicious and interesting mixes, and a scattering of tables, privately spaced to allow guests the seclusion of their own company. Our corner table, hidden away in the furthest corner of the room, was surrounded by glass, and a stunning panoramic view of Hong Kong, and Victoria Harbour. The intimacy and the dim lighting meant we could really float away into a world of our own. #143 issue - BELLOmag.com

“From Blass to
Benz” BY: STEVEN CARVER
T
he concept of hiring new designers for old fashion houses isn’t a novel one. European brands have been doing this for decades: when the originating designer departs, another takes his or her place. It’s only business, not anything personal. Critiques are made – from the boardroom to the showroom – but success is truly calculated with an uptick in sales.
Reviving an American fashion house doesn’t happen as often. While some have attempted, most simply close up shop or become a licensing model to maintain a steady stream of revenue for the owners. The revered Bill Blass label has gone through several incarnations since the passing of its name#143 issue - BELLOmag.com
sake designer, yet the possibilities of rebranding while maintaining a sense of relevance is what its current creative director, Chris Benz, signed up for in 2014.
spirited Benz. “What has been the most interesting part, given the past two years of exploration here, has been learning what the customer loves about the brand, and doing more of it.”
“I was so excited to jump into the re-imagination of a brand,” says the

offered sophisticated separates for day and glamorous dresses for night. Fans from the world of journalism (Barbara Walters), politics (Barbara Bush) and the socialites of the time (Nan Kempner) were drawn to Blass’ eye for detail and draping skills, making the wearer feel both sensuous and strong. At first, the announcement of Benz as Bill Blass’ creative director raised some eyebrows. But, after celebrating his first year at the helm, the choice was a wise one. “The crux of my task here is to translate what was great about the brand – what really attracted women in the past – and translate that ephemeral concept into something understandable and appropriate for today’s customer,” says Benz. His aesthetic is similar – albeit more youthful – to the Blass template: Both designers have an affinity for pattern, texture, ruffles and sequins. That being said, Benz isn’t one to reply on nostalgia. “I try not to get lost in the archives – primarily because it feels like a crutch,” Benz says, noting Isaac Mizrahi’s comments about referencing the past in the documentary film, Unzipped. “But, I love the idea of Bill Blass [archives], and what it looks like if I close my eyes and just imagine the brand as a swirling universe. That’s when it really makes sense to me.” What Benz has done is focus on pieces that resonate with today’s customers. Tunics layered over a wide-leg trouser, textured overcoats thrown over a slinky dress, splashes of vibrant colors like mustard and persimmon, and playful accessories that add a finishing touch to any outfit. Silhouettes are softer, yet the tailored shapes are

designed for a variety of women: the new Bill Blass doesn’t believe in having glamazonians as its target demo. With a refresh on the rack also comes with a revamp in its retailing. There are no traditional runway shows, or spring/summer and fall/winter collections. Shopping is done via e-commerce (it’s the new brick-and-mortar), and a steady stream of season-less merchandise is introduced on a regular basis. Yet, who is the new Bill Blass client? In the past, she was regularly recognized as the lady who lunches, but not anymore. “I am very much about the modern woman,” says Benz of the contemporary customer. “She’s technological, has a sense of humor, and all the things women aspire to be. She’s traveling around the world, or maybe just to the supermarket – it’s all about mixing high and low concepts, sequins with sweatpants, and being comfortable while looking smart.” And as much as Benz loves celebrities, he’d rather design for women who will gravitate to the brand, like fans of his eponymous line (now on hold). There will be no need to court them – it’ll be done organically. And outreaching to “influencers” is not included the plans. The structure is solid, so what else is coming for the house of Blass? “Shoes are our primary focus right now,” says Benz. “In fact, it has always been our best-selling product category. We have loads of new shoes [for the next few seasons] that are really wonderful. Sparkles and color combinations that are exciting and interesting… I think by now we must offer [our popular Sutton Slip-On style] in about 25 colors!” After putting his spin on the house of Blass, would Benz ever consider returning to his namesake line? In his characteristic playful tone, the answer isn’t too surprising. “Who knows, but anything’s possible!”

“The fetching Dino Fetscher” BY: STEVEN CARVER
A
t the start of an actor’s career, the possibilities are endless. It’s a clean slate; try a little of everything. The traditional trajectory is to start with commercials, then some stage work, get a few guest spots in episodic television, and independent films will catch the eye of a producer of a billion-dollar franchise. Anything can happen. And for Dino Fetscher, his options are more than open.
Trained at Central School of Speech and Drama, the Cardiff-born actor (subtle Welsh undertones can be detected as he vacillates between English and American accents) initially started performing on stage, with plays that included Shakespeare’s Othello and As You Like It. But it wasn’t until Russel T. Davies (known as the producer of the current Doctor Who and the groundbreaking Queer as Folk) cast Fetscher in two of his series – Cucumber, and its spin-off, Banana – that helped take his career to another level. Although the sexually charged episodes were provocative, his racy role would’ve meant very little if he wasn’t a compelling presence on the screen. And with the miniseries Paranoid, Fetscher is able to tackle a leading role that is both more complex and introverted than his previous works. Playing Alec Wayfield, a book-ish detective, his restrained character in this thriller delves deep into the human psyche with sense of subtlety. With nothing stopping him in his nascent acting career, what’s next for Fetscher? Bello just had to ask.

You haven’t limited yourself to one medium, but which do you prefer? Stage, TV, film...? Tricky question! They are all mediums I love. It’s one of my favorite things about being an actor: the variety. Stage is an entirely different experience: It’s live, you feed off your audience, you’re really connected to them. It’s incredible, there’s nothing else like it. In the plays I’ve done, the character’s journey unfolds chronologically so you live that experience as it happens. Whereas with Paranoid, it was completely out of sync, so the work was very specifically mapping exactly where Alec was at particular points, because you might be filming episode 1 scene 10 in the morning then episode 3 scene 22 after lunch. TV really excites me though, especially right now! Some of the stuff being made – Dennis Kelly’s Utopia is a stroke of pure genius, Black Mirror, Stranger Things – all groundbreaking, wonderful works. I definitely want to work more in that realm. And in regards to film, I find there tends to be a lot more time; the shoots are much longer, it’s a bit more of a luxury.
You get more takes and you get to really gauge your performance – it’s less of a rush. I definitely want to segue into that. Basically, I want to do it all! Is it easier to tackle comedies or dramas? I wouldn’t say one is easier than the other. For every role – whether the piece is more comedic or dramatic – I need a real understanding of my character and their world, it’s essential for me. When I’ve done my research, my back story and really figured out who they are, it’s like the scaffolding is in place; the architecture gives me freedom to play and continue discovering within that character. With comedy there are more technical elements and timing involved in order to land jokes or gags, so that needs extra attention. I do feel a natural affinity with comedy though; especially darker comedy. Paranoid is a new mini-series and your most recent project. Tell us more about Paranoid and your character (and something to make those who aren’t fans of procedurals to tune in). February 2017 - BELLO

I WOULD LOVE TO DO A BIOPIC WHERE I HAD TO TAKE A WHOLE YEAR TO LEARN TO BE A GYMNAST, A DANCER, OR SOMETHING. THE IDEA OF HAVING TO SUBMERSE MYSELF ENTIRELY IN A FORM EXCITES ME; I THINK IT WOULD BE A REAL CHALLENGE AND A JOY!
Paranoid is an exciting conspiracy thriller set against the backdrop of the sleepy English countryside. It opens with the gruesome murder of a doctor (Angela Benton, played by Emma Bispham) in broad daylight, in a children’s playground, right in front of her young son, Luke.
ing Bull and transform your physicality for a biopic...?
I play Alec Wayfield, the youngest and least experienced of our story’s three police detectives, along with Nina (Indira Varma) and Bobby (Robert Glenister). We follow them as they investigate the ever-unraveling case. Initially, it all seems very straightforward but we quickly realize there is something much bigger going on.
I used to competitively trampoline for years, so a role where I got to put those skills to use would be a dream. I get obsessive about learning new skills, plus I’m very active, so I think it would be a great deal of fun for me.
I was immediately drawn to Alec’s interesting and complex character when I read the scripts. He is unlike anyone I have ever played. He seems to be a very lovely, well-to-do sort of bloke; just an ordinary cop. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear there is so much more to him; he has so many layers, from the case, work relations and his tempestuous family ties. He’s brilliant in his own way and often picks up on the things the veteran cops tend to miss – he thinks outside of the box. It was great to have such a big role over eight episodes that I could really get my teeth into! What type of acting job(s) are you looking to do next? Maybe a comedy, a horror flick, pull a DeNiro/Rag25
I would love to do a biopic where I had to take a whole year to learn to be a gymnast, a dancer, or something. The idea of having to submerse myself entirely in a form excites me; I think it would be a real challenge and a joy!
What kinds of acting projects (big budget, small indies, costume dramas, sci-fi adventures) would you like to do in the near future? Again, it’s the variety I love. I really want to work more in film; there’s an artistry there that thrills me, although saying that I see more TV [in my future], too. I was raised on Harry Potter; I moved to a new school when I was 11 and I had no friends so I would just read Harry Potter constantly – in between classes, at lunch, until my dad threatened not to get me The Goblet of Fire until I brought a friend home! I love all things fantasy. I would love to be a part of something epic and magical, playing someone with powers. I know I would nail that. Anyone in particular you’d like to work with? Oh, there are so many people I want to work with. I just watched Maggie’s
Plan which I adored. I thought the writing was truly original and brilliant, so I would love to work on something by Rebecca Miller. My favorite director at the moment is Marc Munden (Utopia, National Treasure) and visually I can’t get enough of cinematographer Adam Arkapaw’s work – it’s stunning. Actor wise, I’d love to work with Ben Wishaw, Jessica Chastain, Ryan Corr or Bryce Dallas Howard, to name a few. I am constantly being inspired by other people’s work. Where do you see yourself in the next few years? Being on stage, doing more TV, maybe tackling work behind the camera...? I’d love to do a play right now! After such a long shoot on Paranoid I am itching to get back on stage. Theatre is what I trained in - I just love it. Over the next few years though, I’d love to do more TV. I want to come stateside for a bit; I really like it out there and am keen to do more film. I’m always jotting down absurd stuff that happens in my life with my awesome friends so I’d love to do something with all that, maybe write something one day. I’ve got a lot of material! But right now my entire focus is being in front of the camera.

ostalgia is a highly visual term. A nuance of history – the sepia tone in film and photography, vintage items that are worn around the edges – adds to the reminiscing. Just like those who refer to the past in order to look toward the future, it’s important to have a contemporary twist on the traditional in order to keep things interesting; Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann is exactly that.

Designed with a custom outdoor fire kitchen by the renowned chef to fuse his fire-cooking techniques, Los Fuegos is rooted in the traditional asado (outdoor barbecue) – authentic South American cooking at its finest.
Like the rest of the hotel, décor is courtesy of husband and wife team, Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin (the director and costume designer behind the 2001 Oscar-winning film, Moulin Rouge!). It’s gilded and glamorous: thick

Considered the second most important city in Mexico, Guadalajara has managed to positon itself as the next Digital Hub and attract important corporations including IBM, Dell and HP. These technological enterprises are enticed by the prospect of talent that graduates from Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, the ability to source high quality materials, and the opportunity to manufacture at a less expensive rate. However, the city has not completely altered the traditional flair that made it one of the most visited tourist spots in Mexico. Instead, the structures still evoke a regard for the Mexican heritage, at the same time that they welcome contemporary influences. The partnership came about because, as a jetsetter, Nigel understands the importance of simplicity and comfort when it comes to choosing a place to stay; however, as an artist, he values the cultural component that comes with visiting a different country. For Nigel a remarkable travel experience is one where you are able to immerse in the 37
environment and learn from it, and we could not agree more with that! Another benefit of this property is that it is strategically located in the heart of the city in close proximity to the financial district, Plaza Andares, and tourist attractions. It has a broad range of restaurants, lounges, and clubs nearby, making it a vibrant and interesting place to stay.
Swim, Eat, Sleep, Repeat‌ When is time to rest after a day of sightseeing or meetings, then head to the Bi-Level Suite. If you are going to book one room out of the 188 the hotel has, then this is it. The multi-floor suite has everything you need for a comfortable stay and more. Consisting of a living room and dining area, and a pool table on the lower floor ideal for entertaining guests. It has a private bedroom and February 2017 - BELLO
bathroom on the second floor that can be reached through a glass encased staircase. But, the main seller point of this suite is the full 180-degree view of the city through floor to ceiling glass windows. It Is stunning at any time of the day. Glass windows that generate more light, efficient and functional furniture, a soothing neutral color scheme, and a relaxing signature scent made of Neroli extract from bitter orange blossoms, are some of the details that make this hotel a picture-perfect choice. The restaurant and full-service bar: AC Kitchen has a wonderful menu that seamlessly combines European flavors with Mexican ingredients. The breakfast options are a wonderful mix between local cuisine and international sides. Croissants imported from France, Mango Chia parfait, Chicken chilaquiles, hibiscus and habanero marmalade, and fresh cut #143 issue - BELLOmag.com
Serrano ham, are some of my top recommendations. The best way to experience all that Guadalajara has to offer is to visit the Sky Deck at the AC Hotel, Guadalajara, Mexico on the rooftop of the building. The wooden floors are contrasted by the side-to-side heated infinity pool, and an unobstructed view overlooking the city. The state of the art fitness center is surrounded by glass windows perfect for exercising while watching the sun rise from under the skyline. The sunset from this location is truly amazing, as it is watching the moonlight over the water. Is the idyllic location for weddings and parties, as it has a bar and dining area, as well as a top deck that could be turned into a dance floor in a heartbeat! Many business travelers want to feel as at home as possible, and that is one of 38
the mottos of AC Hotels. They seek to provide customers with what they need rather than overwhelming them with costly amenities; nevertheless, they want to do it in a way that still feels chic and meaningful. When you stay in this property you can feel the attention to detail and the thought-out planning that went into the design and decoration; yet, it does not feel over done at any point. It gives you ample room to enjoy everything it has to offer at your own pace and budget without being forced to accept unnecessary add-ons. It also provides plenty of opportunities to cater to business groups or frequent travelers who might want a space where to host a conference or an evening gathering. I WAS ONLY 8 WHEN MY MOM STARTED MY INSTAGRAM BECAUSE OF THE SHOW. SHE STILL MONITORS IT AND YES, I HAVE TO BE CAREFUL OF WHAT I POST. I WOULD NEVER INTENTIONALLY POST SOMETHING INAPPROPRIATE, I JUST LIKE TO SHOW PEOPLE MY EXCITING LIFE IN PHOTOS.
Judging on your Instagram, it looks like you had a sunny holiday for Christmas and New Year. How did you spend the holidays?
We do everything together, including laughing and crying.
We arrived home in Pittsburgh on December 19th, we had just finished up the first half of season 7. My sisters were both home from college and my mom and dad and I all spent Christmas and New Year’s together. I love just hanging around the house with my family. I don’t get to do that very often.
What is the biggest lesson you have learnt from the show?
What did you do for New Years Eve? My sister turned 21 over the Holiday so we had several big parties for her birthday. We went to the Steeler game on New Year’s Day. Then on the 2nd I flew out to St. Thomas to vacation with Kalani! We spent 7 days touring Caribbean islands on a private yacht. SO FUN!! Did you make any New Year resolutions for 2017? My only New Year’s resolution is to be diligent with my school work and continue to train in dance singing and acting. I am 14 now so I want to be totally prepared when my big break comes. What can you tease about the new season of Dance Moms, Lifetime describes it as ‘new beginnings.’ I really thought this would be our last season of Dance Moms. They are bringing in all kinds of new kids, some young and some older. The best part about this season is the dancing. We do some amazing group dances with great themes. We are all teenagers now and we always ask for mature themes and choreography. I think the fans are going to love the dances. What’s your favourite part about being on the show? My favorite thing about being on the show is spending every day with the girls. They are all my best friends. 43
I have learned not to take everything so seriously. If I get yelled at or my mom gets yelled at it’s not the end of the world. No one is perfect, so we can’t try to be perfect, everyone makes mistakes, it’s ok! Who is your biggest inspiration in the dance world? Right now I am inspired by Travis Wall. When I was a little girl I used to take workshops from him. I have always loved him as a performer and a choreographer. I am also very proud of my friend Maddie, she has done so many great things with her dancing. You have such a huge Instagram following with 5.1M followers. Do you ever feel you have to carefully think about what you post? I was only 8 when my mom started my Instagram because of the show. She still monitors it and yes, I have to be careful of what I post. I would never intentionally post something inappropriate, I just like to show people my exciting life in photos. What is something you can tell your fans about yourself that they might not already know? I think what people don’t know about me is that I like to play practical jokes on my friends. Sometimes I get in trouble for it, but its always harmless fun. Describe in five words how you want 2017 to be for you? I want 2017 to be: Full of exciting new opportunities!! February 2017 - BELLO

Helly Hansen
Born by the sea, raised in the mountains
WRITTEN AND CREATED BY JON NORRIS
The winter season, it has a habit of making you feel alive, more than any other season, in fact, wouldn’t you agree? Gliding down the mountain, breathing in the cold, crisp air, taking in the local wildlife tracks of the wilderness, and sipping on a hot chocolate, overlooking the mountain late in the afternoon – it takes you outside the commercial realism that seems never ending, for most of us, in our daily lives, back in the city. Helly Hansen have captured this ethic, extremely well, in their latest campaign ‘Alive since 1877’. The campaign, which has put digital at the forefront of its thinking, sets out to build on what the brand has already, in abundance, a rich heritage and extremely proficient technological know-how in outdoor products and gear. Helping people to stay and feel alive is the motto, doing what Helly Hansen has always been known for, producing the best possible product, for the worst possible conditions. The brand ensures, that with its product offering, the
57
consumer is the first to trust and believe in what they are wearing, protecting them against the harsh conditions they face, out in the elements. This winter, our explorations in Scandinavia and the Alps have provided the perfect opportunity to try two key women’s outfits from the new Helly Hansen range, and it comes as no great surprise that the range is, ironclad, and extremely comfortable. For more information on the current Helly Hansen range and trends, visit https://www.hellyhansen.com

BELLO Travel Guide: Downtown Las Vegas BY DEE TRILLO Senior Travel and Lifestyle Editor| @HauteFrugalista| Dee@BELLOMag.com
L
as Vegas is a vibrant and eclectic city full of lights and never ending parties. However, there is much more to learn and experience, than drinking and gambling. We embarked on a journey through Downtown Las Vegas and discovered the interesting history behind this often overlooked part of the town.
We tasted wonderful culinary creations, visited some of the of coolest museums in the country, and had many thrilling experiences. These are some of the reasons why we have chosen it as a Top Destination to Visit in 2017. Here are our top recommendations for an unforgettable trip to Sin City!
WHERE TO STAY Our pick for best place to stay is the Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino. 59
Formerly known as the Lady Luck, it has been revamped, renovated, and refurbished to attract a clientele looking for luxury on a budget. A glass bridge connects two buildings where spacious and comfortable suites will be a perfect place to rest and get ready for the day. The lobby area is divided into a cool sports bar, a full service casino, and the chic Art Bar ideal for drinks before dinner. The selling point for this property is their stunning, and inviting, 1950’s inspired rooftop pool deck. The largest in Down-
town Las Vegas. A dedicated lounge section has colorful furniture, private cabanas, and a grass eating area that are ideal for a fun daytime brunch or late night drinks. The poolside restaurant serves some of the best ceviche tostadas and beef skewers in town, while the gazebo gives you a must-selfie spot overlooking the city. The hotel is conveniently located at walking distance from Freemont Street. arts, cultural enrichment, and deepen history knowledge. Begin with a visit to The Mob Museum. The stunning building is home to The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement. Memorabilia, recordings, and artefacts are displayed throughout the museum
to support factual information and detailed events. www.TheMobMuseum. org At night, head into The Neon Museum for a walk through memory lane. A collection of vintage signs has been preserved and restored to bring light into the former glory of some of the most notorious hotels in Las Vegas. The Boneyard consists of a two-acre outdoor exhibit where you can learn about the history of the city and the evolution
of the Strip through these nostalgic visual displays. Some of the famous signs date back to the 1930’s, including: The Caesar’s Palace sign, The Binion’s Horseshoe, The Golden Nugget, Lady Luck, and the Stardust. www. Colorful and detailed murals, sculptures, and visually charged statements, make this area perfect for learning about emerging artists and local crafts. After, you should make a stop at The Container Park. Their innovative architectural project, consists of old truck containers that have been repurposed, designed as buildings, and turned into businesses. Original restaurants and unique pubs are aligned with this out-of-the-box venture. Our top suggestion is Cheffinis Hot Dogs.
