MIYAVI AND HIS ENCOUNTER WITH FATE It’s funny how life works out sometimes. You think
you are heading in one direction and suddenly,
as fate would have it, your course is completely altered. For Japanese singer, guitarist, songwriter, and actor, MIYAVI, this shift happened when he was
fourteen years old. “I picked up the guitar when I was 14 years old, after getting injured playing
soccer,” he opened up. “The injury robbed me of my dream to be a professional soccer player, so
I needed to find a new hobby that would excite me, fascinate me.” Around that time, his friend
mentioned wanting to start a band which inspired MIYAVI to pick up a guitar and start playing.
Having released thirteen albums so far, there is no stopping this passionate artist! “Each album
and each track is like my child from every era and every time period, I always think each album is the best of my career,” MIYAVI shared with a
smile. “I always keep evolving and as an artist it’s a privilege to be able to keep challenging myself with new things.” Embracing the idea of change
and continuously evolving and moving forward, he
believes that as an artist, it is his responsibility to take his audience to “new places sonically,” even when it can seem risky. It’s a journey that both the artist and audience take together...because,
“From that moment, I was able to visualize myself
without their trust, he wouldn’t be able to do this!
playing in front of a big crowd,” he shared. The
band came together and they played at the school
festival in junior high. Despite being nervous for his first show, the artist “felt a spark similar
to the adrenaline rush that I got from playing
soccer,” marking his debut in the world of music. Within no time, music became a part of who he
is. Describing his relationship to music as that
of being married, he explained “in the beginning, you’re passionate about getting to know each
other nonstop but after a while the shape of the relationship will start changing into a solid, more stable partnership.” The guitar feels like part of his body and is a tool for him to convey his emotions through tones; “Guitar playing can be a really emotional art form.”
With his audience’s trust in mind, MIYAVI works hard to release different songs which all stem from the same starting point: “deliver a message
of positivity towards life. I want my audience and my fans to feel energetic or motivated after they listen to my music.” Straying from music that
could leave them feeling sad, there is no secret
that the talented artist exuberates positivity and light.
“Music is the soundtrack to our lives. Whatever feelings we get from music can impact our lives forever,” shared MIYAVI. “My music is also a
cultural bridge, a cultural exchange. International fans that like my music are also interested in Japanese culture.” A beautiful thing to witness

when different cultures come together as one! And
speaking of being a cultural bridge, the Japanese
artist recently completed his US 20 City Tour which was a “a fun trip, a real journey and also meaningful.” Part of an amazing team, everyone not only had a
great work ethic but also ignited positive energy
and good vibes the whole time. “On the tour bus
after the show, the girls are always singing and the boys are banging their heads,” MIYAVI described. “We were so happy to be back on the road, so we were always singing and dancing, it was non-stop fun until the very end.” Yes, yes, yes! This energy
poured into the performances on stage and despite
the hard times we have been encountering for the last two years, people came to watch which meant everything. “I even cried after the last show, but I
didn’t really know why I was crying? I still don't know why my emotions took over,” he shared candidly.
Throughout the tour, he found himself getting stronger and never wanted it to end! Amazing
people, incredible times, and cities he has never visited before… it’s safe to say that MIYAVI can’t wait to start a new one! But in the meantime, he
continues to work on his music and of course, that
is not all that keeps him busy! Also a voice actor, you may recognize his voice from Arcane League of
Legends and Bright: Samurai Soul – both released
this Fall on Netflix. This outlet challenges him and allows him to keep growing and trying new things.
a variety of renowned artists, one that stood out
was with Samuel L. Jackson for the track “Worlds
Collide.” Having met on set of “Kong: Skull Island,” MIYAVI (being a huge fan of his work) went up to
him in a cool, calm, and collected manner. Similar interests and energies that vibed, it was incredible having him on one of the tracks.
Adding on the list of experiences, the artist also just dropped an NFT (non-fungible token that
is part of cryptocurrency). With the help of Jeff Miyahara, one of the producers of his latest album,
“Imaginary,” and a board member of KLKTN, MIYAVI was able to get the NFT rolling. “Their skills
and technology are really up there. To me, it was
really great to explore new territories and to see what we can do. The KLKTN team is more eco-
friendly for sustainability,” he explained. It’s not just about making money or following trends but rather serving a bigger purpose.
MIYAVI continues to wow us with his talents and of course, incredible sense of fashion! “We have the freedom to express ourselves as artists and what
you wear can shape your visuals and attitude.” Having been working with GUCCI, he loves the
company's attitude which is all about respect for
Alessandro, the designer, allowing more freedom and fluidity in the seasons’ collections. Beauty is about what fascinates you and makes you feel good, it’s spiritual.
Laughingly he expressed, “ I just turned 40 years
old with a super ‘Saiyan’ hairstyle and tons of tattoos all over my body. I never expected to be like this. We are not aging, it's more like evolving.”
Now that is a way to look at things! Love it! Being a voice actor, surprisingly, is very different from
being a rock musician. On stage, he uses his body and different facial expressions but while recording for a show, there is none of that. And that is exactly the challenge he wanted!
his projects continue to expand and come out. He stars on The Masked Singer in Japan that came out
on Amazon Prime and the movie Kate on Netflix. There is talk of doing a virtual reality version of the Kiyomizu Temple performance in Kyoto where he performed. And lastly, you can see him in Bright and
Arcane both as a voice actor AND musician. “We never know what’s next, that's why it’s precious to
Being able to work with a variety of people in all areas of the industry is truly a blessing and MIYAVI takes it all in. Having already collaborated with

wasn’t materializing. It was affecting my health. I
was losing sleep and obsessing, but doubled on my efforts to make it happen by working harder, which just made things worse. It was like 5 am one
morning, I’d been writing and hadn’t slept in days and just realized: What the hell am I doing? This isn’t
serving me and I’m not even enjoying the process anymore. I decided to step away and channel my
energy towards another project which allowed me
to revisit the first with a clearer mind, more focus, and a much healthier approach. It's challenging
when you really want something, but I’ve been
practicing letting go, because life has proven to me over and over again, if it’s meant for you, it will be.
You also star in “This Is Not A War Story.” Can you tell us more about your role and what it means to you?
traumas that we all experience whether veteran or civilian.
What did you learn when preparing for the role of Will La Rue?
The entire experience in some ways was like being back in school. I’ve never served in the military
nor has anyone in my family or circle of friends, so outside of movies I’d seen, I was clueless. I read a ton of books and articles and was fortunate to spent
a lot of time with vets from WW2, Vietnam, and Iraq to hear their stories and experiences. I of course learned how to make paper from uniforms which
is an incredibly cool process, but most importantly
I learned in a very jarring, intimate way just how crippling the trauma from war can be. I learned that
This film is so deeply important to me and I’m extremely proud to have been a part of it. We made it in partnership with a real life community of
veterans in New York and New Jersey who create
art on paper, made from their uniforms, to tell their stories and support each other through the often crippling trauma that comes from warfare. Talia Lugacy directed and I co-ep’d along with Rosario Dawson. My character Will LaRue is former
army intel officer and multi-tour vet of Iraq and Afghanistan who seemingly has it all together, until
his PTS and moral injury demons resurface and
set him on a downward spiral after his fellow vet and mentee commits suicide. Will meets Isabelle,
a marine vet struggling with her own demons and the two try to come to grips with their past and learn from each other. It’s a deep exploration of trauma that I’m especially proud to have explored through the lens of a black character. At the time
we were filming, I’d just begun to explore my own
personal traumas and seek therapy. Its something that is often still seen as “weak” or “unmasculine” in black communities and as such, neglected. But
I found tremendous value in it and I hope the film in
some way contributes to building more awareness,

conversation and resources around combatting
so many vets scoff at Hollywood’s portrayals of war
and find them misleading and further detrimental to their trauma. Many vets especially from Vietnam
and Iraq don’t want to “thanked for their service” because these conflicts to them were pointless and
ridden with lies. I also learned the sad reality that we as a country MUST do better by our veterans. We
know this of course, but to see the extent to which VA centers are overrun and underfunded was mind blowing. That lack of support means they often
don’t have the tools and resources needed to reassimilate to society or deal with their trauma in a
health way which as we’ve seen, has led to high rates of suicide in veteran communities. We must do better.
You also like to be behind the camera! Where id the passion stem from?
It certainly comes from producing shorts back in my school days long before my career took off. TV and
film has always been a fascinating process to me. It’s creative challenging, organised, disorganised and often chaotic, but always rewarding. This is Not
a War Story was the first feature film I’ve produced on and I learned so much. What it means to be

involved in a project this size beyond acting, to weigh in on different aspects of the film, and to make
a monetary investment to support its completion and promotion. The more invested I am, the more rewarding the process and the finished product
become and I certainly plan to continue being as involved in future projects as much as possible. It’s
given me a greater appreciate for what it takes to create and distribute a film and television and makes you a better, more informed actor.
What do you like to do when you aren’t working?
Is there something about you most people don’t know?
My brothers. I’m the youngest of 6 boys and they
were like idols to me growing up. All very intelligent,
charismatic and certified crazy. I was a toddler when we came to the US from Nigeria and but they were
already young teens. Despite having odd clothes as we were poor and constantly being bullied or made fun of for their accents, they were just fearless and owned who they were.

DAVID MAGIDOFF DOES IT ALL...AND WITH A BRIGHT SMILE IN THIS INDUSTRY, THERE ARE SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE DIFFERENT CREATIVE SIDES AND ACTOR, DAVID MAGIDOFF, DOES JUST THAT! FROM THE BIG SCREEN TO THE STAGE AND MORE, HIS MOST CURRENT ROLE CAN BE SEEN ON DEXTER WHICH IS FINALLY BACK! PLAYING THE ROLE OF A COP FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, WAS QUITE THE EXPERIENCE FOR DAVID AND HE ALSO HAD THE CHANCE TO WORK WITH AN AMAZING CAST/CREW MAKING IT ALL THE MORE SPECIAL! HIS LIVE SHOW "MAKING LOVE WITH DAVID" IS SOMETHING TO CHECK OUT AS IT BRINGS HEARTACHE, LAUGHTER, AND SONG TOGETHER... UMM, YES PLEASE! EXCITED TO SEE WHAT COMES NEXT OF DAVID MAGIDOFF!
Hi David! It is amazing everything you do. Can you tell us more about why you chose to enter different fields of the industry? I follow the fun. Hosting game shows and being on hour long dramas have the same thing in common: making people feel good and escape into a story. I love improv and comedy, and making something out of nothing. What were you most attracted to when you started your career? Do you feel like your goals have evolved? How so? Goals, ha! I had no goals. I am almost too minded in the present and I just do whatever is in front of me. I remember saying if I haven't booked a gig in my first 5 years, then maybe it's time to stop. But I got my first TV gig in my first 10 auditions and I've been thankful ever since. As an actor, what do you believe your job does (beyond providing entertainment for the audience). An actor's job is not to look like an actor. If you're watching a TV show or a movie and 35
see me, well, that's great cause I'm working. But hopefully you just see the character or role I'm playing and forget it's David. And yes I just spoke about myself in third person. You star in the new Dexter that just came out, how exciting! What has that experience been like? Special. Very special. We filmed for 6 months in the snow and sun of central Massachusetts. Michael C Hall and the whole cast were wonderful. And because it's rural Massachusetts, I ate a lot of great ice cream. What did you do to prep for this role compared to other shows you have been on? I've never played a cop before. Or had a gun. But I remembered this character is only 2 weeks on the job, so it's all still new to him too. So the role took care of me. Share with us what “Making Love with David Magidoff” is about and why you decided to start it.
Fall 2021
Bello
It's a live show where I interview a celebrity friend of mine and dig into a love story, a breakup, or a proposal and then my Groundlings friends and I re-enact it...as a musical. That show is my happy place. (Next one is Friday December 10th. More info at magidoff.com or @davidmagidoff) Is there a segment in particular you would like to tell us about? My favorite part of the show every time is when the interviewee on stage says "My story isn't very good." And then it's always always incredible and the audience is on the floor. Not one person thinks their love story is any good, and every single one of them is wrong. I have a theory why, but that's for another interview. From TV to Podcasts, what do you enjoy most about each? What do you hope your Podcasts bring to the listeners? I love the visual medium of TV. The linear story over many episodes. And just working with such talented people making magic together. It never gets old. And the same goes for my podcast, Fanaddicts. In addition to my cohost Clare Kramer, we have an amazing team at Roddenberry that's a joy to work with. I love how Fanaddicts connects celebrities with real people and says "We all have a thing." When I found out Michael C Hall adores Fixer Upper's Chip Gaines it made me so happy. No one should be ashamed of the things they love. Passion is what connects us.
Authenticity. The small things. Things that make me laugh. I loved writing my TV pilot, KING DAVID, because it happened to me. When I write what I know (a Jew who started going to church) and that it's also funny (my family made me meet an Emergency Rabbi, which is a real thing), then I know it's a story worth sharing. Share with us a time where something or someone truly made you laugh. And a time you have made someone else laugh? My grandma Lila always made me laugh. She would turn around, then turn back and she was cross-eyed and she contorted her face like a monkey, and it got me every time. Old people aren't supposed to be silly, and I loved her so much for it. When have I made someone else laugh? Gosh. Hopefully every day of my life. When I say “love” and “comfort,” what first comes to mind? My wife, Sarah. And in a very far second place, my cat, Kelly. She likes to lick my nose. The cat, not my wife. What comes next? Dexter: New Blood is currently airing new episodes on Showtime as you're reading this. And we have the whole Dexter cast on the Fanaddicts podcast, which drops new episodes every Monday, wherever you get your podcasts.
What inspires you to write? What do you like writing the most about?

Tell us about your character Jameson in Sacrifice? Ms. Jameson Howard is a piece of work, honey! She is all about her business and will stop at nothing to get it done. She’s committed to her goals as talented artist and a savvy business woman. What would you like to see happen for your character if there is a season 2? I would love to explore the family business that Jameson comes from. I believe that would be a really dope storyline to dive into.
Your characters Jameson in Sacrifice and Salt in the Salt-N-Pepa biopic are both musicians. Would you be interested in pursuing a music career in the future? Yes, I would actually. Maybe at some point within the next year or so I’ll put out a music project and see how it’s received. What’s your favorite Salt-N-Pepa song and why?
What is one crazy fact that no one knows about you?
My favorite song is “None of Your Business.” I love this song because I live by the lyrics.
Well, I wouldn’t say this is crazy, but one fact about me most people don’t know is that before getting into acting and entertainment, my path started as a figure skater.
We see you are into fitness? What is your weekly routine?

Yes, getting consistent with my fitness routine started when we were all on lockdown and I needed things to keep me busy. I go to the gym between 3-5 times a week depending on my schedule and work out with my trainer G. Washington for about 2 hours, sometimes longer.

What is your favorite recipe that you make? I have so many recipes I love to make so its hard to just pick one, but I'll say the one dish that I make for the most people at once would have to be my mac and cheese. I have now been dubbed the mac-and-cheese-maker for all of the family events.

I get to bring this amazing character to life and play someone who does all these cool scientific experiments, it’s a lot of fun. What inspired you to audition for the show? It all started with a self-tape request sent from my team back in August 2020. I remember reading the character bio which was pretty detailed, and thinking ’Allie seems cool and pretty badass.’ I love her background and what drives her, there is more to her than meets the eye and that’s exciting. On set, who do you connect with the
57
most? What have you learned from the cast/crew? On set I connect with everyone -- literally everyone! Obviously, the cast is amazing, and Matt Lauria and I are actual best friends so that’s wonderful to work with your bestie. The crew on this season has been amazing, they work so hard to get the job done and always do it with a smile. Some of the crew are British, so I loved that. If I ever missed home I would go have a chat and it would feel like I was back in London. Growing up, what was your favorite game to play/activity? Growing up I loved badminton and swimming. It’s funny, I used to forge my mum’s signature to get myself out of P.E in school UNLESS they were playing badminton, then I would suddenly be absolutely fine to participate that day!

I spent a lot of time as a child in the swimming pool too, I used to compete in Gala’s. You were also in Ricky Gervais’ “After Life” for Netflix for 2 seasons. Tell us more about that. After Life was a beautiful project to be a part of and playing Sandy was one of the most honest performances I’ve ever given. I remember being at Ricky’s Christmas party one year, and he said ‘I have a role for you that I want you to play’ he sort of told me the jist of the show, but mainly just said ‘your character cries a lot.’ I was like ‘great!’ Haha. But being on set, it was amazing to work with Ricky on some emotional scenes, he is truly a great actor.
Is there anything most people don't know about you? I am currently developing a series with a big streamer and I can’t wait for the world to see it. What do you believe your purpose is? To live life to its fullest. As far as we know, we only have one life, which is pretty short if you look at how long the world has been here. So I feel like my main purpose is to live my life fully and have no regrets. If I can help someone else to live their life fully too, then I’ll be happy with that. Spread love and be the light.

IT'S FRIDAY AND WE ARE HYPED AS POP SINGER/SONGWRITER, CHRISTIAN FRENCH, RELEASED HIS NEW TRACK “OH WELL“ ALONG WITH THE MUSIC VIDEO VIA DISRUPTOR RECORDS/RCA RECORDS. THE VIDEO IS DIRECTED BY NICHOLAS JANDORA (24KGOLDN, LIL SKIES). WE SPOKE WITH CHRISTIAN ON HIS MUSIC, LIFE AS AN ARTIST, AND HOW HE RISES ABOVE ANY OBSTACLE THROWN HIS WAY! SEARCHING FOR HAPPINESS AND FINDING LOVE WITHIN HIMSELF, CHRISTIAN FRENCH REMINDS US TO KEEP PUSHING FORWARD!
Absolutely love “Oh well”! What is the meaning
behind the song? What do you hope people will get the most out of it?
thank you! i wrote this song after a bunch
of really shitty days - my ex & i broke up the
same day my label was telling me my music wasn’t good enough to release, & overall i was just feeling really disconnected from myself. so many things kept happening that it kind of
got comical, so instead of writing a sad song i decided to have fun with it & turn it into oh well.
i want people who listen to feel like their problems aren’t as big of a deal as they’re making them out to be - sometimes shit goes
wrong that’s completely out of your control &
you just have to roll with it, shake it off & say oh well.
What was your favorite part of filming the music video?
How did the process go?
it was in the thick of quarantine during a writing camp at my house in hollywood back in january-
since my roommate pinkslip is my producer,
we were able to work out of the house for a bunch of days straight, having homies come
through (with negative covid tests of course) to
collaborate with. this particular day i just was not having it - so many things had gone wrong
the past few days, i was sick of trying to write about my breakup & was just burnt out. i think everyone could tell that whatever happened that day needed to be light-hearted & fun, so
when i started talking about what i was going through & my friend jackson said “oh well”, & everything just clicked from there.
Share with us an example of a hard time you went through in life and how you came out of it on top.
the scene where i had a busted nose & a black eye was really fun to do - i’ve never had makeup done to me like that & it was crazy to see myself
look so messed up. i facetimed my mom & told
her i fell off the roof trying to jump in the pool,
& she fully believed me for a second before i told her i was kidding haha.. she hated me for a second
When you started writing, where were you?
I think performing is the example I use most often - in 2018, I opened up for Chelsea Cutler
on her fall tour, & the first show of tour was my first ever show. I was SO nervous, & felt like i had absolutely no idea what I was doing up there
- I would throw up from nerves before pretty much every show & DREAD getting on stage,
but I knew that if I was gonna be a musician,
this was something i needed to get better at & 69

the only way to the other side was through. So over that tour & the next one opening for Quinn XCII, I tried to sponge up as much
as I could from watching them, & even
enrolled in a dance class to feel looser on stage (which was HUMILIATING every day). Over time I got more & more comfortable with myself, & found that every show I was
getting better. Now, performing is where I
feel the most comfortable & the most free, & it just came from repetition & a willingness to fail for a while.
now. I see it as a tool for growth rather than something to avoid. It’s never easy, & some
days I still lose to my fear, but I’m getting better at facing it.
Why did you decide to become a singer in the first place?
It really just happened naturally - I didn’t
start with the mindset “I’m gonna become a professional musician”. Before I released any original music, I had been doing soundcloud
What did you learn from this? / Any advice you would give to people struggling?
covers of my favorite songs for about 5 years, learning how to sing & play piano
along the way. I kept having more fun with
failure is IMPORTANT. it sucks so bad in the moment, but mannn you learn so much
from it. If you stay inside your comfort zone
& aren’t willing to fail, you’re never gonna grow & get better. This is something I have to remind myself of every day & still have a really tough time handling some days.
Growing up, how did you deal with fear? And now?
it, & after I finally got good enough to write my own music, I found a sense of peace & accomplishment that nothing else gave
me, so I just ran towards it & kept doing it. Things just sort of fell into place after that Your ultimate purpose in life? I’m really on a search to find happiness &
love within myself so I can begin to spread
it to others in an impactful way. I think as
I don’t think I knew much about fear, & wasn’t as aware of my mind as I am now,
so I always saw it as something to avoid at all costs. Obviously there were things
like school speeches (which i HATED) that
I couldn’t avoid, but for the most part I did my best to stay as comfortable as I could
long as I feel a lack of love for myself, it’s impossible to fully give love to others, so
that’s something I’ve really been focused on. For me, making music is the closest I’ve felt to
connecting to a “higher power”, & its already
allowed me to impact lives & experience a variety of cultures in a way I never thought
was possible. I want to continue to travel, to
