It’s not every day you get to see Prince Charming get down and dirty in a mechanics yard somewhere in Venice. But that’s where we find Josh Dallas, the man behind the goodintentioned hero from ABC’s successful fairytale serial ‘Once Upon A Time.’ Sunny California photo shoots aside, Dallas is enjoying the high of coming off a blockbuster second season, one full of enough twists and turns that would make any evil queen’s head spin. (Holy detour to Neverland! Granny’s packing some firepower!) If you had tried to inform the blueeyed thespian a decade ago that he’d be starring in a hit television drama and be showcased on several Best Dressed lists, he’d probably think you were under some kind of spell yourself. After attending high school in Indiana, the Kentuckyborn heartthrob lived in England for 11 years where he trained as an actor. “They couldn’t kick me out,” he laughs. “There will always be a place in my heart for London.”

Ask him to put on a British accent, and he may disappoint you. “I never really picked it up,” he tells me. But there were plenty of words and phrases he adopted: “Chuck it in the bin” and “It’s pissing out there” (it’s raining) were two common idioms he used. But it was the expression “You all right?” that stood out for him. It always sounded personal to him. “They were asking me ‘Are you all right?’ and for the first three months, I was walking around with this huge complex like there was something wrong with me!” Remembering and honoring his roots is something Josh excels at, and he consciously makes an effort to revisit and give back to the place where it all began for him: New Albany High School. Going back to talk with students and participating in charities to support the school’s renowned arts programs is something he loves to do. “I try to be as involved as I can within the public school system where I grew up because it was such a huge influence on my life,” he says. “For a public school system to have such an emphasis on the arts is really unique and special, so I owed a huge debt, so I go back as much as I can.”

It’s safe to say those visits to his alma mater may attract more attention now that his handsome mug is attached to a globally known TV show. When shooting the pilot for ‘OUAT’ in Vancouver, cast and crew were in their own little bubble. Like the rest of this castmates, Josh didn’t give much thought to how viewers would react to seeing Snow White and her longlost beau endure weekly trials and tribulations every Sunday night on their DVRs. However, that all changed when, in the middle of the first season, he flew home to Kentucky for a visit. While walking through a terminal at the Minneapolis airport on a layover, “I saw all these heads looking at me, turning around, and I thought, ‘this is weird,’ because I’ve never experienced anything like that before. And all of sudden someone was pointing at me and saying, ‘Prince Charming! Prince Charming!’, and I was being called at in public...and I could be called worse, I guess. So that was when I realized, ‘Oh, people are actually watching.’ It’s a cool thing to be recognized for a show that people love so much.”

With such love and recognition – from both men and women – comes a lot of pressure and expectation. Playing a character that is practically the gold standard of all leading men is as fun as it is challenging. Challenging because rarely is a fairytale figure associated with having a depth or a complex. And fun because, well, he gets to interact with “Oncers” at fan events like PaleyFest and ComicCon and experiment with “oldschool Hollywood” fashion on the growing number of red carpets he finds himself walking on (“classic and timeless” is how he rolls). “But at the end of the day,” he concludes, “I’m an actor, and we can only go in and play what’s written on the page, and hopefully we bring that to life...You have to play him for the man that he is on the page, for all of his hopes, his dreams, his desires, his happiness, his sadness. You have to look at that as opposed to, ‘I’m going to just play Prince Charming.’” And when he’s not playing one half of Storybrook’s starcrossed supercouple? “There’s a couple of projects I’m looking at,” he teases as we discuss his summer plans, which also include some renovations on his home back in L.A. (“it’s the best place to unwind and hang out before we jump back into fairy tale land”) – and surfing. That’s right, Oncers. Prince Charming likes to hang ten.

THE NEWS GIRL Olivia Munn photography ALEKSANDAR TOMOVIC words by Hiko Mitsuzuka

Olivia Munn owes a lot to Punky Brewster. The titular character from the cult 80s sitcom, starring a precocious Soleil Moon Frye, once inspired a 5 yearold Munn to become an actress. “Oh my gosh, there’s a girl with dark hair and freckles, and she wears boys clothes... that’s exactly how I was as a kid , ” she recalls. “ And I never saw anyone who looked even remotely like that on TV.” Having felt like “a lone wolf” while growing up, Munn remembers wanting to be friends with the fictitious foster kid, but it was her mother who had to explain to her that Punky wasn’t real, and the girl playing her was an actress. “I then told my mom that I wanted to do that. Act.”

And act she did. The Chinese-German-Irish actress got her start on G4’s ‘Attack of the Show’ and followed that up with a correspondent gig on Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show.’ Since then, she’s established herself as a recognizable face, popping up next to Robert Downey Jr. in ‘Iron Man 2,’ baring it all alongside Channing Tatum in last year’s ‘Magic Mike,’ and being ranked on every “hottie list” in nearly every men’s magazine in existence. And now she’s making an impression as financial reporter, Sloan Sabbith, on HBO’s ‘The Newsroom,’ Aaron Sorkin’s verbose drama about the behind-the-scenes drama at a cable news network. Nabbing the role came with one mother of a migraine. Having turned down job offers from network TV shows, Munn took a gamble on ‘The Newsroom’ and held out for as long as she could. “I just kept rolling the dice,” she says. Once she found out she got the part, she got hit with a major headache, most likely a result of the stress she put herself under, “all the tension I was holding onto during that time.” The wait (and pain) was worth it, and now “the girl from that geeky G4 show” is holding her own amidst the acting talents of Jeff Daniels, Sam Waterston, and Jane Fonda. She’s even conquered what some of the most experienced actors have had trouble facing: that Sorkin dialogue (otherwise known as Sorkinese). Last season, Munn had to work double duty, effortlessly – and memorably – delivering lines in English and Japanese in one episode (“Bullies”) that showed viewers another side of Sloan.

BELLO

Munn is well aware of the circuitous path she’s walked to get where she is now. She finds herself constantly reliving those proverbial pinchme moments. “I think I’m more aware of the critics who think, ‘How the hell did this happen to her?’ I’m like, ‘I have no idea!’ I don’t know how this happened to me either,” she laughs. But what she does know is this: she wouldn’t have made it without the training she received on ‘Attack Of The Show,’ where she got to try out various characters and roles: “I was used to putting on different kinds of personas.” And now that she’s on a hit cable drama and building up an equally impressive film career (look out for her in Jerry Bruckheimer’s ‘Beware The Night’ opposite Eric Bana), she refuses to let herself get too comfortable. “That only brings on the fear of complacency for me,” she says. She also doesn’t see herself as one of those people with fiveyear plans. “You can only be best in the moment you’re in right now” is the motto she’s currently following. Sure, there may be a followup to her bestseller, “Suck It, Wonder Woman: The Misadventures of a Hollywood Geek” (she keeps a notebook filled with ideas and stories). Sure, she may want to hire a tutor to help her brush up on her Japanese this summer. Sure, she’d love to eventually work behind the scenes at a studio someday. But right now, Olivia prefers to keep her head down, focus on the work at hand, and see what opportunities will come her way down the line.

That work in question happens to be Season 2 of ‘The Newsroom’ (premiering July 14). And with a roster of guest stars including Patton Oswalt, Marcia Gay Harden, and Chris Messina, viewers can expect more rounds of verbal spats at Atlantic Cable News. As for Sloan? “She’s more involved in more news stories,” Munn hints, “and there’s this seasonlong arc about a story that jeopardizes everyone’s career, and she’s involved in that as well.” Sloan Sabbith, as many have analyzed, represents that rare hybrid of female characters in film and TV: a woman who is both smart and sexy. But Munn doesn’t understand why people should be surprised that a woman can fit both criteria. “I don’t see how they have to be or should be compartmentalized,” she says. You hear that, critics? Just because a woman is smart doesn’t mean she can’t be sexy as well. “I don’t play her sexy though,” Munn continues. “I just play her straight and strong, so whatever you take away from it is whatever you take from it... The way she looks has nothing to do with how far she is.”

BELLO

Olivia credits her Chinese mother for her hard work ethic, something that has come in handy in her career as it did during her adolescence. “In high school, I was depressed,” she says. “I moved around a lot to different schools.” Having anxiety about adjusting to new environments every so often as a military kid, she eventually channeled that nervous energy into her work. It’s something she continues to do in her adult life. “There’s still this hustle,” she explains. “You just gotta keep your head down and work hard. And sometimes you have to play the game because everything in life is a game. You have to know how to deal with the politics of any profession. Then, after you work hard, when you can, you change the game.” Punky Brewster would be proud.

MORE ON MUNN 5 Fun Facts 1. She’s a ‘Star Wars’ fan, has high hopes for the new trilogy, and keeps a lifesize Yoda in a window of her home: “It’s like owning Harrison Ford a little bit... it’s amazing.” 2. She loves ‘Labyrinth.’ 3. Every year she gets to celebrate her birthday with fireworks, flags, and her fellow Americans (she was born the day before the 4th of July). 4. She believes selfdeprecation and sarcasm are great icebreakers. 5. After meeting her childhood idol, Soleil Moon Frye, she was too nervous and geeked out to email her: “There’s no way I deserve to be Punky Brewster’s friend! I honestly don’t know if I could’ve been normal around her.”

He’s funnier off-screen than he is on,” says the California native of his co-star. I went to Coachella for the first time. I liked it a lot. My favorites were The Lumineers, Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Pretty lights was sick. And, of course, Dirtypohics & 2 chainz.

In Kansas city my brother had auditioned for some role & ended up not getting it. The casting director called my mom two months after. They needed a family for a Wal-Mart commercial & asked if we’d be interested in coming to audition. I had no idea what we were even doing. We ended up going to Wal-Mart. I’m at the game section playing, and I look one isle over, & my whole family’s being interviewed. We booked the commercial. I was an extra in the back, and I hated being an extra.

I’ve been getting into music lately. Listening to a lot of Jay Cole. He’s one of my favorite rappers. He raps about real stuff. Really deep stuff. Not just about cars and money. I like deep stuff. So I hope within the next months, I’ll be releasing a mix tape. So far I’ve written three songs for this. Watch ‘Zach Stone Is Going To Be Famous’ Thursdays|10:30 PM on MTV.

THOMAS SADOSKI

From the thriving slums of offBroadway to HBO’s ‘The Newsroom’, Thomas Sadoski looks every inch the humble guy on campus. But unlike Hollywood’s often said quote reading “Everything that glimmers isn’t Gold”, Thomas Sadoski shines and glimmers with modesty and intellect. Personifying this near to be extinct species of the Hollywood actor. Thomas Sadoski has done well staying away from the limelight. With a hit, and critically claimed show as his current gig, one would say the thought is simply impossible. But they say tabloids and drama find those who attract it, and with two decades of work under his belt, Sadoski has attracted something much more meaningful, and permanent; success.

But on this late May morning, the 36yearold Connecticut born actor had a menu of other things on his mind than my own praise of his success, as he opens up about his grandiose first love; the theater, his appreciation for New York’s effect on the human being, and his journey throughout life as an actor. Sadoski who served as an understudy for Both Mark Ruffalo and Mark Rosenthal in ‘This Is Our Youth,’ a play by Kenneth Lonergan, attributes a lot of his goodcomings to his experience on the production in which he refers to the lifechanging gig as “My First job. Ever. ” “It was sort of the best circumstance I could’ve walked into. I walked into this play with this brilliant playwright, amazing director,” says Sadoski. “Mark [Ruffalo] is a once in a generation kind of actor. I have such a high opinion of him as an artist, as a person too. He was so generous to me, and so kind to me. I was a kid, and he really took me under his wing. He spent the time, and he didn’t really have to,” he says of his early days in New York City. “He took the time to sit with me and talk to me about the show, and about what it was to be an actor and be professional,” He adds. “Mark was a big influence on me, man,” Sadoski says thoughtfully. “He showed up to work. He was professional. As an artist he was never satisfied. He was always pushing; always exploring. I took a lot of notes from that.“ Sadoski went on to star in Reasons To Be Pretty alongside Marin Ireland, Piper Perabo, and Steven Pasquale. The cast created Reasons To Be Pretty OffBroadway and brought the production to Broadway, which garnered seven nominations; three of them being Tonys. He admires the days’ weather, telling me he’s getting used to Los Angeles, slowly but surely. Having lived most of his adult life in New York City after studying at The Second Stage Theater School in Midtown. Just one street away from the rush and lights of Time Square, home to the city’s most popular musicals. It was just last year that he relocated to Los Angeles. And although the town of small dogs in handbags is his current place of residence, he’s well aware of what surrounds him. “New York will sort of grind you down. I needed that. New York will provide you instant humility,” says Sadoski. “There’s nothing even bigger than the city. There’s nobody who is. Anywhere you walk in New York, you’re constantly being reminded of how you’re just a small part of a great organism that is New York City. It was important for me early on as an artist. ” He expresses to me in the most authentic and sincere form how much his beloved New York differs from Los Angeles, yet he understands the glamour and appeal of The City of Angels, and couldn’t be happier that he made the transition From New York City to California in the order that he did. “It [Los Angeles] can be a really lonely, really hard place. But I think it has a way of really catering to and exploiting the weaker parts of being the kid, being young in this industry. All of the glitz and glamour, the parties, and the premieres. He pauses for a moment, catching his thoughts, and continues, realizing he’s going on a rant. I, on the other hand, completely enthralled. “When you’re young. It’s so pervasive out here. It can really seem like it’s important. It can really take on this weight. This imagined weight in your head. This weight of importance that, frankly, it just doesn’t have,” he says. “It’s like a ghost, it’s unsubstantial. It won’t be there to pick you up when you fall down.” He then lets out a chuckle, thinking of his last statement in comparison to The Big Apple. “That’s the thing about New York. When you fall, there’s always going to be pavement underneath,” he says. “You’re never aloud to get that high anyways. So the fall doesn’t hurt that bad when you fall in New York. ” Luckily, his transition from the stage to the screen, whether big or small, is something he sees as ideal; perfect even. “Aaron [Sorkin] writes so theatrically. He’s a playwright at his core. I think that he writes these hourlong plays,” he says to me excitedly, and proud almost. “You know, theater is so much more immediate. You’re doing the whole story eight times a week, rather than picking little moments here or there, or just one scene or one angle at a time. The danger, I think, with film is that you can become really, really obsessed with making each little moment count for something.” He adds; “I believe one of the best things of having a background in theater, or the training, is you learn to sort of work the story as a whole. And there’s a more freedom in that that you can explore.”

He speaks to me about these things with such ease and comfort, but most of all, with so much to say in respects to the subjects and topics we’ve touched on. I can’t help but chime in and recount my own experiences with theater and the city, and all it’s taught me. But before I do, he asks me where I’m from, inviting me to share my own knowledge, observation, and understanding of both coasts and their respective arts. I tell him about my fondness and attachment to the city, and having experienced all the good things New York can gift you. He’s quick to agree with me. He seems almost glad of my involvement, and I attribute this to undying appreciation and his own keenness to the city that never sleeps. We can both tell that what is usually a generic scheduled conversation has turned out to be anything butAnd that “stimulating” has taken hold of “generic”’s place for the span of our chat. I’ve just sat down to speak to yes, an actor, but above all a very wise and intellectual human being. Naturally, with a person like Thomas Sadoski, his answer to my last and closing question would manifest itself into a statement worthy of 20 coffee table quote books. I asked him what he has taken away from such a great life of work and precious experiences, and he says to me in his most honest tone, “That’s the thing. I continue to learn every day. And I think that maybe that’s what I take away from all of it is that; I am more interested today in what it is to be a human being, and what it is to be hurt than what I was yesterday. And tomorrow, I will be even more interested than I am today.”

8 THINGS WITH ‘DEXTER’’S

AIMEE GARCIA Aimee Garcia, in her own words, is “livin’ the dream”. Her dream. The actress’ journey from finance worker to a pivotal part in the final season of Showtime’s hit ‘Dexter’, proves that when things are meant to be, life has its ways of making it happen.

PHOTOGRAPHY ALEKSANDAR TOMOVIC WORDS BY Dio Anthony

BELLO

You went to North Western University. How’d acting come about? I started dancing as a kid. I probably took my first ballet class when I was three years old. And then I had my first professional performance when I was about seven or eight, as a dancer. They needed a dancer for a commercial, so I went in and tried out and got it. One thing led to another. I got into theater classes when I was about 13 and kept working in theater during my high school days in Chicago. I ended up going to Northwestern University for Economics, Journalism, and French, but I was still working as an actor around Chicago while still a student. When I graduated, I worked in finance for about a year. It was then that I decided that I actually loved acting, and so I went back to it. In a way, it was more of a return to what I did as a child, rather than a big switch. How was that year of working in finance? When I think back on that year, I think of the energy of New York and how all you have to do is get onto a subway to hear the sounds of a violin, or African music, or see dances. There’s art all over. It was one of the best times I’ve ever had. Even though I didn’t have a dime to my name, t a lone for rent. How’s your experience been working on ‘Dexter’? You come in at such a crucial time in his life. I really feel like they’ve welcomed me with open arms. Lauren Velez, the first day I was shooting, gave me a great big hug and said welcome to the family. So, I have to say, I felt so welcome, and everyone was just so good. It’s an environment that is really hard to not do your best work in. It’s such an environment of professionalism and artistry and every actor is trained and a lot of them are from New York. Michael C. Hall graduated from NYU’s graduate program. On ‘Dexter’, you’re really working with real actors. And they really bring that kind of expertise and professionalism to the show. It’s like playing tennis. If you’re playing tennis with someone who’s better than you, you usually catch up, and then it’s much more fun of a game.

BELLO

I can only imagine after eight years, the bond they’ve built. I’ve been there only for the past three, and it’s great. I totally could’ve been that awkward new kid. But it wasn’t the case. Did you know the gig was a longterm deal, or was your character’s stay a shock to you as it was to viewers? I was only supposed to be on for a year. So, I was sure I was going to get it at some point. My boss is a serial killer, so I thought it would only [be] a matter of time before my head was on the chopping board. It ended up not being the case. Jamie ended up being instrumental in the nuclear family that is ‘Dexter’. She essentially became a mother figure for Harrison, and the closest thing Dexter has to a wife. Without her running the show at home, he can’t go out and do his hobby. I don’t know when the decision was made to kill her off, but I was ecstatic when they asked me back for the next year. And then when they made me a regular for the last season, it was a dream come true. The show’s known for its twists and turns? Regarding this upcoming season, what can you say? The writers are so good that even after eight years they still throw curveballs at you. Even for someone who’s behind the scenes. I’m there every week at the table reads. I get the scripts, and it never fails, I’m always saying “OMG. I can’t believe they did that!” “How do you guys come up with this? How do you guys come up with all these curveballs?” Do you miss your finance days at all? Oh, God, no [laughs]. I miss New York. I haven’t been for a while. New York’s always nicer when other people are paying for it. But, I love what I do so much. I get to go to work and just play opposite someone like Michael who has done Broadway, who was been on ‘Six Feet Under’, and brought that character to life and has now brought this character [Dexter] to life. I get to work on a network that is taking home Best Drama Emmys. And I get to play a role that gets to represent and educate the all American girl, which I am so grateful for. I did go to

college. I have three degrees from Northwestern, and it’s nice to be able to play a grad student, who is all American and just happens to be Latina I also get to shoot in LA. It’s really nice to not have to fly out and pick up my entire life. I’m kind of living the dream over here, and I can’t believe we’re almost finished. So, no, I definitely don’t miss living in the closet, in the ghetto of Brooklyn. I love the city. I miss the city, but I definitely don’t miss that. Was Finance at all what you expected it to be? There’s a lot more predictability, I feel, in finance. You know what you’re getting. It’s a 95 job; I knew what I was getting paid, which was nothing. I didn’t bring work home with me. I feel like with what I do now, you digest it. I just did a film in Toronto, and I lived there for four months. I was playing a dentist, so I went and visited my friend who’s a scientist in her lab. Read a bunch of books. Did so much research. What I do is sort of all consuming. At least that’s how I approach the craft of acting is. But any freelancer will tell you. Know how to invest your money, and know how to make one month’s worth to last five months. Regardless of whether you’re a freelance writer or consultant, whatever your field is. That has come to be very useful because it’s important to know how to save and invest, and I learned all of that in school and in my year of working in New York. You’re a Gold player. How’d that come about? One name: George Lopez. He literally gave me a golf club and asked me to hit a ball. I had never hit a golf ball in my life. That’s kind of where it started. I was sort of thrown into it, and ever since then, probably like four years ago, I still really love the game. It’s a good way to get my mind off of work. I see it as very therapeutic, meditative, and it’s really nice to be out in nature. Golf helps me do that.

...TO THE MAX Max Fowler

may hail from an adorably named suburb of London called Strawberry Hill, but this summer, he’s getting acquainted with the darker, see dier side of Seattle on the third season of AMC’s ‘The Killing.’ The British actor is about to make a Stateside splash by playing a “troubled” character on the resurrected mystery series. We recently chatted with Max to find out more about his obsession with Spiderman, his secret passion for tennis, and why enjoys bracing the dark side.

On the new season of ‘The Killing’ your character is described as “a troubled teen who’s as charming as he is manipulative.” What else can you tell us about your role in the new mystery? Twitch has been on the streets for five years. Therefore he has a bit of an advantage in terms of experience. However, deep down he is just as lost as the others. He’s very much in love with himself and has big ambitions to go to L.A. and make it as an actor/model. He’s very narcissistic and everything is about getting what he wants as fast as possible. On the surface, it’s easy to sum him up as a douchebag, but what I feel is apparent in this series is that every child has their own way of dealing with the awful circumstances they find themselves in, and for Twitch, he’s always only had himself to rely on. It was the day he stopped relying on others that his heart stopped getting broken. So his narcissism is his defense mechanism. What has it been like hopping across the Pond from the UK to work on an American drama? Getting to work on an American project has been pretty much a dream come true. I grew up on Hollywood cinema and became an actor largely under the inspiration of actors and films I was watching. So to get to work on a project such as ‘The Killing’ amongst such actors like Peter Sarsgaard, Elias Koteas, Mireille Enos, and Joel Kinnaman is insane in the best possible way! Not to mention the incredible array of directors. So yeah, a dream come true is definitely a fair statement. You’ve also starred in the BBC thriller ‘Mayday,’ which has a few shades of ‘The Killing’ in it. What’s the appeal of working with dark, dramatic material? Well, to be honest I’ve always loved thrillers/dramas growing up, so maybe that’s why I find that the darker, intense material comes more naturally to me. But I personally find that these kinds of projects are fun to work on as it often feels very real, and at many times, challenging. To be challenged doing what you love is all you can really hope for. Do you have any plans to stay on this side of the Pond? I very much do! Hollywood has always been my goal. However, there are obviously fantastic British films produced every year so I would still love to go between them. But I would like to definitely make my mark on this side of the pond. I grew up in a little town called Strawberry Hill just outside of London. As a kid I was cheeky, hated school and loved playing, whatever it consisted of, but as long as I was having fun. So I guess I was pretty normal! But throughout my life I always had my obsessions [like] Spiderman and Michael Jackson. It’s funny, reflecting on and remembering how passionately I would impersonate my heroes in private for my own joy. I remember a specific time when I was about 10 I went to school wearing my Spidey costume under my uniform and didn’t even tell anyone. It was just for me. One of the best school days ever! Finish this line: If I weren’t acting, I’d be... I’d be a tennis player! Purely because of my hero Rafael Nadal, vamos Rafa! What are your summer plans? Any holidays on the horizon? Well, hopefully a trip to Barcelona, but we’ll have to see how work pans out over the summer!

Mariah Carey’s ‘Dreamlover’ Turns 20 by Hiko Mitsuzuka It was a music video so simple, so sweet, it had most kids my age aspiring to frolic in a field and dance the afternoon away (that wax-on-wax-off choreography was all the rage back then). Mariah Carey’s “Dreamlover” was her seventh #1 single at the time -- impressive for a pop artist who had only been out for less than four years. It debuted during the summer of 1993 and featured some carefree, happy-go-lucky visuals. Mariah, decked out in denim cutoffs and doing her best impression of Maryann from ‘Gilligan’s Island,’ bounced around and lounged in the grass like the farm girl she never was. The video was a Sunday morning staple in the Mitsuzuka household that year. While my father was out playing golf, my mother and I would watch VH1’s ‘Top 20 Countdown’ during a hearty breakfast and watch it pop up on the small screen in between commercial breaks. The song then followed me wherever I went throughout the rest of the year: Summer barbecues, birthday parties, eighth grade dances...a definitive 90s jam for the record books. The basic concept for the music video must have made it a relatively easy production, although I’m sure Ms. Carey had been shaking in her Keds while bopping along high up in that hot air balloon. Directed by Diane Martel, it was shot in Copake, New York and featured a cameo by Carey’s dog, Jack. The single was the first of many to come from ‘Music Box,’ Mariah’s third album that would cement her status as a pop superstar. The lyrics, especially that killer chorus (“Dreamlover, come and rescue me, take me up, take me down, take me anywhere you want to, baby, now...”), still resonate today for anyone longing for that special someone to swoop in and whisk them away. Happy anniversary, MC. Love, Bello.

NEW ‘BLOOD’ Natalie Dreyfuss photography Amanda Peixoto-Elkins words By Brad Liberti Despite growing up in sunny Los Angeles and watching friends and family make a living in the “wacky” business of show, Natalie Dreyfuss didn’t start acting professionally until the age of 20. Yet in the six years that have followed, she has more than made up for lost time, gueststarring on some of the biggest TV shows of the last decade (‘Weeds,’ ‘House,’ ‘New Girl’). Most recently Natalie enjoyed a recurring gig on ‘The Secret Life of The American Teenager,’ but with the huge year she’s got coming up, including a mysterious new role as a Fey on Season 6 of ‘True Blood,’ Ms. DreyfusS is a long way from ABC Family. “’True Blood,’ as a show,” she says, “is extremely secretive about what’s going on characterwise. But in terms of working on it, it was an amazing experience! To be on such a cool set and to learn from those actors was really fantastic!” Naturally, I had to probe her for more info and secrets...

Naturally, I had to probe her for more info and secrets... How does a show known for such secrecy go about casting? “When I auditioned, the producers let me know that [the scene I read] would have nothing to do with the part that they were casting. Then, after getting it, I had absolutely no I idea what I would be doing until my very first day of filming.” Were you worried beforehand about what you might have to do – i.e. nudity? “That was my number one. I said, ‘No nudity!’ I really won’t do it, and I know that there’s a lot of nudity on the show so I made sure that that was clear. But the producers came to me and said, ‘There’s no nudity! You’re really gonna like this role, and have a lot of fun with it!’ And I was like ‘Okay, whatever it is, I’m down!’ Luckily, [the whole experience] ended up being just as wonderful and interesting as I could have hoped for though!”

Can you tell us anything about the new season? “I can’t say a lot, but I will reveal that it was really interesting to work so much with Deborah Ann Woll (who plays the gorgeously hormonal vampire, Jessica). As an actor, [Deborah] is so interesting to learn from because she takes her work so seriously and is incredibly good at what she does. Every time she’s on screen, even when you’re not filming, you can’t help but want to go and watch because she’s just so talented.” You also have Season Two of the popular webseries ‘Aim High,’ about a high school superspy, costarring Aimee Teergarden and Jackson Rathbone, coming out in the fall... “I can’t wait for it to premiere! It was a lot of work and a lot of fight training because I play a teenage assassin, but c’mon that’s awesome! I worked with Mike Smith who’s been Mila Jovovich’s stunt coordinator, shot a machine gun, a shotgun, and even played with throwing swords!”

And this season, even more people will get to see it, right? “Yes! ‘House of Cards’ did so well on Netflix, and now a lot of shows are following their lead and allowing Netflix or Hulu to distribute them. I had never been a part of something like this, but it was cool because (as a web series, beyond the micromanaging clutches of Network TV) we were able to basically do our own thing and shoot it like a film. We shot a hundred pages continuously, not having to worry about episodic order and could just get into character. It wasn’t until postproduction that it was cut into 10m inute segments, and I really believe that this makes it feel like a film when you watch it.”

Will every episode be released at once, a la ‘Arrested Development’? “I would recommend it, because that’s how I got to see it. But I’m not sure.” What’s next for you? “Besides gearing up for the release of both shows, a ton of commercial work. Though it’s funny, I have about three commercials in rotation right now, and I get phone calls from friends all the time saying, ‘Why are you all over my TV?’” Something tells us that Natalie best prepare for a few more phone calls throughout the year.

BRIT WEEK 2013 Pianos, Pizza & Pam Hogg

Entertainment editor Hiko Mitsuzuka attends a fashion party in the Hills – on an empty stomach.

mix iPhones and monocles). The whole time I’m thinking to myself, “Where the hell is this secret garage with this mythical pizza?”

Here in Los Angeles we are recovering from Brit Week, that time of year when UKborn artists of all types living in Southern California (and Anglophiles like myself) gather together to mingle and celebrate each other’s achievements and overall fabulousness.

I got my answer when I stumbled upon a closed door in the foyer. I turned the knob, expecting to be greeted with a closet full of jackets and hangers, and was surprised to find a dozen young ladies – half naked – sitting in chairs, getting their faces painted and their hair teased. Lots of skin, lots of lingerie. Several heads turned. Through the hairspray and lip gloss, all I could smell was baked crust and melted cheese. My eyes locked on the stack of pizza boxes sitting on a table surrounded by eye creams and hairbrushes.

I was honored to be invited to attend a Brit Week party in the hills above Sunset Boulevard celebrating opera, fashion, and art (OPARTASH, get it?). Thrown at the private home of ‘Genlux’ fashion editor Amanda Eliasch, the guestl istonly “soiree” held about 150 guests including actress Lisa Zane from – yep – ‘Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare’ (I’ll let that sink in for you 90s horror junkies out there). And who knew she could sing? Early in the night, the ravenhaired artist slinked up next to a pink piano and performed an Italian number with opera singer Charles Eliasch. My plusone for the evening was a filmmaker friend of mine who wished to remain nameless here because of his description of the house: “It’s as if Betsy Johnson and Ed Hardy had sex in 1987 and exploded.” Indeed: white walls, onyx tables, pink velvet chaise lounges, baroque sculptures, and neon artwork made for a decor that would have made Andy Warhol proud. Since we arrived fashionably late, we expected to enjoy some gourmet nibblers as our dinner, but lo and behold, a dining table strewn with cheese plates and hummus wasn’t enough to satiate our appetites. After stuffing my face with Brie and grapes, I scoured the rest of the party for anything that would quell my stomach. No such luck. Instead, I downed two glasses of Veuve Clicquot and a vodka cocktail at the open bar. Peeking my head into the kitchen, I politely asked two catering staff members if anything else was being served since I, like some of the guests I knew, preferred to not graze on pita chips and berries like farm animals. “I know there’s some pizza in the garage,” one girl advised. “They’re for the models. If you can find them, I’m sure they can help you...but you didn’t hear that from us.” Interesting: The party guests get an industrialsized snack platter while the supermodels who need to squeeze into metallic body suits for a fashion show get pepperoni and sausage thickcrusts? Cut to: me on a mission, walking through partygoers, nodding my head as I was being introduced to a Duke from England and a British artist who’s the son of a famous thespian (it was almost like a 21st century ‘Downton Abbey’ up in there – a

“Sorry,” I piped in. “We were told there was pizza in here?” “Sure,” a smiling waif said, unfazed by our intrusion. “You can have this one.” She stood up and handed us a box. Surprisingly, most of the pizza had already been eaten. Did we just stumble upon some kind of behindt hescenes fashion show ritual? Is this what supermodels binge on before walking the runway? Surely this doesn’t happen in places like Milan or Paris... “Don’t mind us,” my friend said. We awkwardly stood by the door. Smiling Waif went back to her preparations. I scarfed down a slice of barbecue chicken pizza as if I were a survivor who traveled across a postapocalyptic Earth after weeks without sustenance. Somewhat satisfied, we made our way outside to the pool deck to grab a good seat for the pending fashion show. A runway had been constructed over the pool and a spotlight had been situated next to the DJ. A hush came over the Eurocentric crowd. Amanda Eliasch came out and tapped on a microphone, thanking everyone for coming, especially designer Pam Hogg who had flown in from London to showcase her new line of outoft hisworld outfits. Hogg, one of Gaga’s fashion femme fatales, isn’t known for making public appearances, so tonight’s occasion was quite special and blah, blah, blah...I was just happy I had found that secret stash of pizza. The models strutted and did their thing. I caught Smiling Waif making her way towards our seats. In a moment of recognition, I smiled, nodded my head, and on behalf of my stomach, mouthed the words, “Thank you.” Without missing a beat, before she walked off the pool deck, she turned and said, “That pizza was so good, right?” My kind of supermodel. BEA AROUND THE CITY by Beatrice BODAS around the city… On many of my wanderings in NYC, and on a rainy day, I was in the mood to go to the Metropolitan Museum to see The Punk : Chaos to Couture exhibition.. A pretty good call! The Met’s spring 2013 Costume Institute exhibition, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, examine punk’s impact on high fashion from the movement’s birth in the early 1970s through its continuing influence today. Featuring approximately one hundred designs for men and women, the exhibition will include original punk garments and recent, directional fashion to illustrate how haute couture and ready-to-wear borrow punk’s visual symbols.

Fashion & Good Karma This month I had the privilege to be part of a beautiful cause : Fashion Fiesta For a Cause (FFFAC): A fundraising event hosted by Molecule Communications brings celebrity and fashion together to raise funds for students of Women’s Education Project (WEP), a non-profit organization helping young women living on less than $1 a day in India, to succeed in college and careers.

It allowed participants to adopt a girl supporting her schooling and career training for 22 months! By adopting these girls you help change their lives (and get brownie points with good Karma!) Focusing on the relationship between the punk concept of “do-it-yourself” and the couture concept of “madeto-measure,” the seven galleries are organized around the materials, techniques, and embellishments associated with the anti-establishment style. Themes will include New York and London, which will tell punk’s origin story as a tale of two cities, followed by Clothes for Heroes and four manifestations of the D.I.Y. aesthetic—Hardware, Bricolage, Graffiti and Agitprop, and Destroy.

I did it and what’s best than enjoying a fashion show and feeling you might have changed someone’s life in such a good way….

FROM DAY TO NIGHT Menswear-inspired the tuxedo-stripe pants offer a simple way to update your everyday mix. Even better, the trend translates seamlessly for the office (with tailored trouser versions a la Miranda Kerr) and the weekend (with casual denim styles as seen on Cara Delevingne), giving you plenty of ways to wear the look. Cara Delevingne
: Rag & Bone Skinny Tuxedo Jeans .
A casual tee and stylish sneakers lend side-stripe jeans that cool, model-off-duty vibe.

What an experience! “Un voyage” that I totally recommend if you are living/ or visiting New York City.

Aimee Song of Song of Style
Baseball Hat, Bsable Chelsea Long Sleeve Jacket in Blue Feather; Hudson Leelo Colorblock Skinny Crop Jeans ; Monika Chiang bag; YSL Ankle Cuff Paris Pumps (available in gold!) luxurious feather coat paired with a baseball hat and tuxedo-stripe jeans exudes that perfect uptown-meets-downtown mix.

 Miranda Kerr
: Equipment Signature Sleeveless Blouse; A.L.C. pants; Celine bag; Manolo Blahnik heels.
Instant chic outfit equation: cropped tuxedo-stripe trousers plus a tucked-in sleeveless silk blouse and pointed-toe stilettos.

 Get The Look
… As you can see, there are multiple ways to wear the trend, it’s time to shop the look. You can either take the more polished route with a pair of trousers or keep it casual with denim versions. It’s totally up to you. If you prefer a trouser, be sure to go with a tailored and cropped fit, which will allow you to fluidly transition from day to night.

This month was called “Design” and the previous “stories” have been called Art and Color, the roster of merchandise includes clothing from Norma Kamali’s Kamali Kulture, “smart” planting pots from Click and Grow, and bespoke bicycles from Martone Cycling. A must see !

You’re in luck because there are plenty of great styles to try for all budgets. Check DKNY’s Tuxedo Skinny Trouser or Forever 21’s Colorblocked Straight Leg Pants. You can also mix things up with a brighter option, like Each X’s cobalt blue Crepe Tuxedo Pants, Diane von Furstenberg’s Naples Soft Canvas Pants in Blossom, and True Royal’s Stripe Insert Pants in Red/White jeans, If you’re more of denim kind of gal. Again, you can’t go wrong with a couple of neutral picks, which is why I suggest you check out J Brand’s Rowan Skinny Jeans, Maison Scotch’s La Parisienne Skinny Jeans and Nasty Gal’s Tuxedo Jeans. Of course, if it’s a more colorful option you seek, don’t miss Forever 21’s Life in Progress Tuxedo Skinny Jeans or NYDJ’s Sheri Tuxedo Skinny Stretch Jeans.

discovery of the month Retail has a new tale to tell, and its name is . . . STORY. Walking in NYC on a sunny day after visiting some Art Galleries in Chelsea I discovered one of the most innovative retail space, created around the concept of an ever changing retail atmosphere. A 2000 square foot store located in Manhattan’s burgeoning new retail corridor of 10th avenue. Duly Equipped By: Steven Carver

Men often misunderstand what it means to dress for the summer. It isn’t about throwing on a T-shirt and shorts. Men should embrace the warmth of the summer season by injecting a little personality into their clothing. It’s time to get past the grey and gloomy days of winter, Colorful and classically elegant is how Duly Equipped is best described. Reminiscent of the swinging 60’s and London’s Carnaby Street, designer Yenting Chen takes tailoring from the Mod movement and adds a splash of the decade’s hippie-like vibe with colors and eye-catching patterns created from Chen’s own illustrations. A student of the fashion design program at Taipei’s Shih-Chien University, Chen settled in Toronto in early 2011 (via Vancouver) and hasn’t looked back. Although he draws inspiration from contemporary culture and design, Chen frequently refers to London’s Savile Row as a base for his menswear. Still known for employing some of the best tailors in the world, Savile Row is the bastion of impeccably constructed menswear. Duly Equipped simultaneously stays of-the-moment while harking to the past with

BELLO

its combination of bold, modern design and the centuries-old tradition of tip-top tailoring. True, silhouettes are trimmer compared to those from the past, but that’s simply due to the customer’s cravings. Inevitably, it’s all about looking good. It wasn’t too long ago when men took great pride in how they dressed. Think of the dandy, the flaneur, the walker – men whose position in society depended on their appearance, no matter what they did for a living. The majority of Duly Equipped’s clothing is hand-finished with fine fabrics and fittings sourced from around the world. While seeing the pieces from afar, it’s easy to miss minute details: the top stitching is done in contrasting colors, interior linings flash in poppy patterns, and trims and tapings are silk instead of synthetic. Attention to detail is paramount and can make a difference between a good suit and a great one. This is what summer should feel like, sartorially-speaking. Clothing should be an expression of the season, but also of the person who’s wearing it. Although it’s a time of leisure, it shouldn’t be an excuse of laziness. Dress to impress, no matter how warm it is outside.

Noble and Graff By: Steven Carver

Luggage is known for transporting materials from point A to point B, usually in utilitarian ways. Function over form, substance over style. For those who want the exterior shell to be as appealing as its interior contents, Noble & Graff is there for the frequent flier living the – quite often, jet set – life. If the aesthetic of Noble & Graff looks familiar, it’s because it should. NG Lester was the former head of design and co-founder of Norton MacCullough & Locke, another high end luggage company. With his training in Austria and the UK as a craftsman, carpenter, tailor and menswear designer, Lester is now overseeing the creative direction of the company, both style- and business-wise. By creating limited numbers of hand-crafted pieces in England, Noble & Graff is able to keep a tight rein on quality through every step of the process. Their highly trained artisans take pride in delivering personalized, dedicated service while preserving traditional luggage-making techniques using leather, wood and metal. The craftsmanship is evident in each piece – the gold-plated locks ‘click’ solidly, the leather handles are assembled and reinforced with steel.

The team’s vast and various design talents are quite obvious upon further inspection. Their previous histories include producing goods, graphics and illustrations for a diverse and distinguished range of companies – hotels (The Four Seasons), fashion houses (Alexander McQueen) and jewellery makers (Cindy Chao the Art Jewel) – within Europe and Asia. The group is committed to produce luxurious products; small carryalls and jewellery boxes to large travelling trunks. Designed with a nod to the 1920’s, each piece contains modern conveniences. People need to pack not only their clothing, but also digital equipment that’s prevalent in today’s world. Granted, their Bordeaux trunk is still designed for those who need to house and transport three standard sized wine bottles for a weekend getaway. Pack the essentials in Noble & Graff for the weekend – it’s time to go on a trip. The Riedel glassware is strictly optional.

London’s Dan Rookwood by Robbie Rogers I had the pleasure to sit and talk with Dan Rookwood, head fashion editor of Men’s Health UK. We had lunch at one of Soho’s quirky coffee shops in London where we discussed the latest men’s fashion and style trends. Who would be your biggest style inspirations? I love Paul Newman and the way he presented himself. I will say without embarrassment that David Beckham is a style icon of mine. Sure, he’s had some absolute fashion disasters down the years – the cornrows, the hisandhers matching leather jackets, the sarong – but these days, he is someone [who] looks cool both when very dressed up in a suit or dressed down at the weekend, hanging out with his kids. The British rapper, Tinie Tempah, also does the smart and casual thing very well – often in the same look. He manages to fuse streetwear, designerwear, and Savile Row tailoring and make it work. He’s inventive and innovative in terms of his layering and his combinations of colours and patterns. He’s been very influential in terms of getting British men in their 20s and 30s to dress better. Then at the other end of the age and culture spectrum, Prince Charles. He’s a superb advocate and supporter of British style. That man knows how to wear a doublebreasted suit and camel coat. What kind of advice would you give Americans traveling to London in terms of style? This is a great time for fashion in London, and we’ve got some awesome designers who are beginning to make a name for themselves internationally. Leave some room in your suitcase but don’t just come here and buy things you can get at home. What’s the point of that? For casualwear check out YMC, Folk, Albam, Oliver Spencer, Sunspel and the flagship Topman at Oxford Circus. For offt hepeg tailoring, have a look at Rake and A Sauvage. Pick up an Ally Capellino bag, a Uniform Wares watch, a pair of shoes from Mr Hare. Have a look around the big four department stores in the west end – Liberty, Selfridges, Harrods and Harvey Nichols by all means. But make sure you head east and check out the stalls at Spitalfields Market and Borough Market and the independent boutiques such as Present, Number Six and Anthem. Then pinball around the coffee shops, cafes and small bars of Shoreditch and Clerkenwell and look at how the bearded, fixie biker iding east end hipsters dress. What are a few of your favorite British brands? Oliver Spencer. How to describe him? He’s developed that “classic with a twist” idea that Paul Smith pioneered and put his own spin on it. Oliver has become a good friend and as a result he asked me to walk in his London catwalk show in January which was a true honour. Reiss. All the clothes I am wearing in this shoot are Reiss for their SS13 campaign. I’m very impressed with Reiss as a brand. They occupy that middle ground between the high street and the high end but I think they do some cool suiting and great quality coats at affordable prices. Hackett. Their slogan is “home of quintessential British style” and it’s very true. Hackett is our version of American preppy, I guess – with a bit more tweed and tailoring in the mix. They have the cut just right. Grenson. English shoemaking is the envy of the world. To this day Northamptonshire is the epicenter of Goodyear welted shoes. One of the companies that manages to offer both traditional shoes and more modern and innovative styles is Grenson. Barbour. Where I live in Richmond, southwest London, a waxed Barbour jacket is part of the uniform BELLO

– especially when walking our dog around the park. Barbour is another fantastic British brand with over a century of heritage. Their classic coats are timeless but they keep things fresh with cool collaborations. They’ve got one coming up next season with a Savile Row tailor called Norton & Sons. Thom Sweeney. I wear a lot of suits in my job and my favourite is a threepiece with a horseshoe waistcoat – a signature of Thom Sweeney. It’s run by two guys in their early 30s – Thom Whiddet and Luke Sweeney – and they’re going to be big. The navy blue suit Beckham was wearing when hurtling down the Thames in a speed boat with the Olympic torch en route to the opening ceremony last summer? That was Thom Sweeney. Rake. For slightly more relaxed, louche tailoring, I like Rake. They’re part of this new wave of contemporary Mayfair tailors. Their lapels tend to be a little more generous – doublebreasted or peak lapelled – that nips in at the waist and gives you that classic Vshape. Makes you feel like a million dollars. Bremont. This watch brand was set up 11 years ago by two maverick British brothers whom I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know. They are now taking the Swiss on by crafting superb mechanical watches on the banks of the river Thames – and they have great fun doing it. Their backstory is pretty inspiring too. Check them out. What’s your favorite area in London to shop menswear? Probably just around where I work in Soho, which has a bit of everything. From Savile Row, work your way east to Regent Street, Carnaby Street, Newburgh Street to Berwick St and also check out the cross streets such as Brewer Street and Beak Street. Savile Row is all about tailoring, obviously. Regent Street – you’ve got all your major stores including Burberry’s magnificently futuristic flagship. And whatever you do, you must spend an hour getting lost in the menswear department at Liberty. Carnaby Street is buzzy but actually the ad-

jacent Newburgh Street is more interesting. And then there are cool independent menswear stores and fixie bike shops on Brewer, Beak and Berwick – definitely worth exploring. There seem to be more popping up every month. Can you give us 35 important tips for dressing up in summer? Examples... fabrics, colors, smaller details blah blah anything you can think of. Go white. When it comes to summer shirting, white shows up less sweat than pastel colours. A buttondown Oxford is extremely versatile because it can be dressed up with a knitted tie and jacket or down when unbuttoned with the sleeves rolled. Go light. Unlined, unstructured jackets have given the blazer a contemporary reboot, ideal for warmer weather as they’re much lighter. They are the one item that instantly dresses up a more casual outfit to make it suitable for the office. Go for versatility. Keeping the colour palette of your summer wardrobe to a few basic colours means that you maximise the possible permutations and combinations – so stick to white and shades of blue, accented with a splash of bold block here and there colour such as red for a nautical look. Coloured chinos have been growing in popularity for the past two years as a lighter, brighter alternative to cords and denim. They’re the trouser that instantly ‘summers up’ an outfit and are ideal for men who can’t or don’t want to wear shorts. Wear the rolled to expose a colourful sock, or even an exposed ‘mankle’. Go big on accessories. A summer wardrobe always benefits from interchangeable accessories. Colourful woven bracelets – mangles – are very on trend this season. I like Miansai especially. A pair of good quality sunglasses from Cutler & Gross, a woven Anderson’s belt and a summery watch such as a block colour GShock will all pep up simple outfits. Steer clear of flipflops unless you’re actually at the beach. There are plenty of other more stylish options

ranging from smart suede brogues, loafers, driving or boat shoes to boxfresh white plimsolls, retro sneakers and espadrilles at the more casual end of the spectrum. Most look better when worn without socks so keep your feet clean and give each pair of footwear at least a day’s rest after you have worn them. Any recommendations on sunglasses? Yes, tonnes. Everyone has been wearing RayBan Wayfarers for years now. I have several pairs including a prescription pair for when I am too hungover for contact lenses. Clubmasters are also cool. You also cannot beat a pair of Persol 714s – especially in tortoiseshell. They’re the classic foldable frames that will never go out of style. All that said, this summer I’m moving more towards rounded sunglasses – not John Lennon round, just rounded. I’m a big fan of Cutler & Gross, a London brand which is just about to open its first US store in New York. Check out their 0736 frames. I love Oliver Peoples too, especially their Gregory Peck frames. Garrett Leight – son of Oliver Peoples founder Larry Leight – now has his own label which is cool. Moscot is also worth checking out if you’re looking for a vintage style frame.

Australia, I have a new appreciation for being able to hop on a cheap flight and within two hours be somewhere with a completely different language, architecture, food, culture. We love to get some sun so my Orlebar Brown swim shorts get regular outings – I have several pairs. It’s a shorter short, but not too short. Midt high, more fitted than your usual swimmers and quickdrying. The idea behind them is that you can go from pool to restaurant without having to change.

The Cornrows Phase.

When traveling what are 5 things you always travel with? My laptop. Sad to admit, but I actually feel quite anxious without it. As I write this sentence, I am sitting on a plane en route to a long weekend in Spain. I’ve been working hard recently and I promised myself I’d leave it behind. But at the last second, I swiped off the table. It’s not like I have to write every day – but I have to have the option to write. If I don’t, I get itchy. And I’ll find a pen and paper. A navy blue travel blazer. Because you should look smart in the evenings. Running shoes. There’s no better way to see a place than to have a run around it. A book. I only ever read books while on holiday. At home I tend to just read magazines, magazines, magazines – doing the job I do, magazines are an obsession.

Personal Motto? It’s always better to be slightly overdressed than slightly underdressed. Favourite summer tipple? Aperol Spritz. Stop sniggering. Who would play you in a film? In my dreams... Ryan Gosling. Not those kind of dreams. Or my French AL evel dreams. OK, no dreams. I’ve just got a bit of a mancrush on Ryan Gosling and I’m not afraid to say it. Most inspired by? The view of London from the top of Richmond Hill where I live. Makes me feel glad to be alive. What would you get rid of? Drizzle, moths, change on a tray, coffee chains, txt speak, ironic slogan tshirts, Monday mornings. Best piece of advice given? “Do what you love and love what you do.” I’d like to say it’s a Stephen Fry line but it’s actually off a bumper sticker I read once. People are surprised that...I used to be a soccer reporter for The Guardian. And that I am the son of a preacher man. And that my fatherinlaw is a Rangers and Scotland legend.

Have you acquired, or rediscovered, anything from your closet recently that has been bringing joy to your life? I went to a Mr Porter dinner recently in honour of a British footwear brand called O’Keeffe run by the loveliest woman called Maud O’Keeffe. I had never heard of the brand before but I am now the proud owner of a pair of O’Keeffe double monk strap shoes in doveg rey suede. Not only are they beautiful to look at, they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. I feel like I walk an inch taller when I wear them.

It drives my wife mad. Our recycling bin is full every week. I don’t have the time or energy for books. I’ll re read the exact same three paragraphs of my book that I read the night before until my eyelids give way to the weight of fatigue.

Any sort of beachwear that excites you for this summer? I know that’s tough to say living in London.

Book that changed your life? The Catcher in the Rye – it’s the only book I’ve ever read three times and it’s meant something different each time. Either that or Roger’s Profanisaurus.

One of the great things about living in London how easy it is to get out of it. It’s one of the bestconnected cities in the world. Having lived in Sydney for four years where you can fly for four hours and still be in

Style is...Being perfectly dressed, whatever the occasion. Success is...Six months of the year in the UK; six months of the year somewhere hot. Must have item of clothing for SS13? A bomber jacket.

Travel headphones. I’m wearing my Bose XXXX right now and listening to a wicked British band called Foals rather than the wailing toddler in row 12.

Your recurring dream? It’s a dream of panic about my lack of preparedness for my French AL evel. I got a C and it haunts me still – normally when I’ve missed a deadline. Signature dance move? The SwannieD – a bastardised version of the Swan Dive. I’ve had to retire the move due to recurrent injury to lower back/reputation. Favourite destination? Home, to my wife. But New Zealand is the most breathtaking country I’ve ever been to. Pessimist or Optimist? Optimist. Especially when it comes to deadlines. Style icon? David Beckham – these days he always looks cool. He’s come a long way since

And a pair of tassled loafers. But probably not together. Dan happens to be one of the best dressed men I know. A very good friend and quite a gentlemen to add to that. His taste in football (soccer) might be a little off, but the man knows his fashion. <ENDS>

All about attitude... nima Taherzadeh, Fashion Designer

This summer, the options are endless; from high fashion to disposable clothing. Are we trapped by fashion, or can we use it to convey our own individuality? Eye catching, heart stopping, and mind blowing are ideals forced upon us by the media. What do you want to be? Is it time for reinvention, creativity, and change? How will you measure up this summer? Do you just want to look like a glammedup mannequin in Bergdorf ’s window, or do you prefer to feel like a superstar instead? Being the superstar this summer is about being many things. It’s about being where things happen or being the person who makes it happen. Be in the mood, when you’re not in the mood. Be in the moment and own that moment. This season is not about what you wear. It’s about how you feel in what you wear.

Summer 2013 Trends By Jacqueline Manning

Spring has come and gone, and it’s time to gear up for summer months ahead with our guides on the latest trends that will sizzle up your summer. Whether you’re at a beach BBQ, poolside soiree, or just looking to heat things up, follow our tips for your most stylish summer yet! From the runway to city streets, we’ve seen women rocking bold stripes, crop tops, graphic tees, and cut out dresses. With temperatures rising, it’s time to stock up on these peekaboo pieces and daring looks. Kick back at a bonfire in a chic and casual striped top. Make sure to pair with lucite heels for post-bonfire fun. If you’re the kind of fashionista who loves taking a risk, mix and match prints and bright colors for a vibrant look.

Take cue from celebrities, like our cover girl, Olivia Munn, who give the red carpet a “peek” in cut out dresses. We’ve seen neon Michael Kors cut out dresses on the runway, and many designers, including Mr. Kors, are making this a staple trend of summer 2013. Give the peekaboo trend a try. Whether you want a maxi or a mini with exposed details, any woman can rock cut out pieces with confidence. And it doesn’t hurt to have a glowing spray tan when giving a peekaboo!

Fashion is a state of mind, so don’t just look expensive...feel expensive. Do what brings out your inner fire...your inner best. Whether it’s being the first to carry the season’s “It Bag” or being the tallest girl in the room in Fendi platforms, always be unique and unafraid. Whether it’s feeling feminine in Valentino or embracing your inner boy with J.Crew, make your mark and be remembered. Don’t blend... be bold and graphic. Be the last person arriving to the party... be the first to leave. Feel effortless in pastels or look vibrant in prints. Love your curves no matter what you wear, be it Pucci or Zara. If you can’t wear a Rolex, simply rock your Nike Fuel Band and feel fierce counting your steps. Be stunning, playful, and the first to pose for the cameras... even if there are no cameras... whether you’re wearing H&M or Balmain. Do what it takes to be the star on YOUR stage and create your own Instagram moment. This should be a carefree summer... light and silly... happy! Be calorie free or indulge yourself with chocolate. Do what makes you smile! There are no stop signs or inhibitions because boundaries are passé. Set yourself apart. Be inspired AND inspirational. Be all that you can be. Be on the edge. Be watched. Have no fear of being hated or adored. No matter what you wear this summer, wear it with confidence... It’s all about attitude, my superstar.

If you are looking for more modifications to your wardrobe rather than a summer shopping spree, keep your black and white staples, patterned pants and florals, and freshen them up. Ditch your sweaters and pair patterned shorts with the trending graphic tees, or keep it simple in a minimalist top. If you love florals, find a crop top covered in flowers and channel your inner hippie with high waisted jean shorts and a flower headband. Customize your Coachella-esque look with a DIY floral head piece with your favorite flowers! And as always, black and white is here to stay ladies. This classic look has translated from spring to summer with monochrome bathing suits, beach accessories, flowy maxi dresses, and woven wedges. A black and white ensemble will keep you cool at night and hot all day long.

You don’t need to dip into every trend this summer, just personalize your look by pairing classic staples from your closet with a few new trends that suit you, and you’ll be ready for summer. BELLO

Each season, fashion addicts patiently wait for their favorite fashion blogs/pages to release the season’s hottest trends. From women’s fashion to men’s, this year’s summer trends are easy and thoughtful. Many designers have showcased collections for Spring/Summer 2014 in an array of colors and tailoring. These days, women’s fashion is limitless! We are in an era where edge meets sophistication and playing with your imagination is a must! Some of the season’s hottest trends include: leather for both men and women, lace, bohemian hats, chunky heels, and fun brightlycolored maxi dresses. Staying functional and cool this summer is very important. This year, instead of throwing out your winter garb such as leather jackets and your favorite boyfriend jeans, you can slowly transition into the summer months by incorporating some of the same styles and updating them with flowy, lacy, or leather pieces. Some really great trends for Spring/ Summer 2013 are leather in lighter shades, pinks, nudes, mint etc. Throwing a leather tank under a jean jacket or a vintage army jacket will keep you cool and also shiek for a night out. Lace in any color from tops to shorts are so flirty and on trend for the season. Pair a lace jumper or mini skirt with a leather jacket and some heels or gladiator sandals, and you will definitely make a statement. Sheer is in. From tanks to blouses, grab their attention by pairing a sheer top with a structured jacket that fits you like a glove, a leather mini or shorts and your favorite heels, something that will elongate your legs. For men, this season’s trends are to be effortless and self expressive. From a fitted tee and a knit oversized cardigan, to a well tailored suit that can still transfer into the summer months, the fitted and wellgroomed look with an edge is the perfect way get you through the hot summer months looking very dapper and effortless. Pairing a tank or your favorite vintage band tee with a leather jacket and/or fitted sport coat is an easy transition from day to night. You can keep it casual by wearing a pair of loafers, in any color (the brighter the better), and a fitted pair of denim in a darker shade of blue or in black. To dress up a look, throw a cool vintage hat on, a welltailored dress shirt, a pair of tailored slacks or shorts, and your favorite oxfords for a comfortable and fashion forward look. Play into your own style too, throw a broach on the lapel of your favorite jacket and play with the fabrics. Instead of doing a leather jacket, try leather shorts or pants and pair your favorite boot! Try something bold but keep a classic feel to it! This goes

for both women and men. These are things that I try to incorporate into my collections each season. Being a designer for a unisexual conscious clothing brand, I have learned to throw out the rules and design with the heart. I studied men’s tailoring as an independent student, along with womenswear, and started my brand as a menswear designer. The past few years, while perfecting my menswear trouser and learning the business, I learned that clothing has to be easily transitional throughout the day, no matter your lifestyle. I created the label GaricStephens to showcase a line that was accessible to men and women where they could both wear the collection and feel great. From the cuts of my jackets to the way a menswear trouser looks svelte on a man or woman, the clothing is very universal and tailored with a vintage feel. When dressing for an event or just a nice dinner, I try to stay classic and effortless. Let the clothing speak for you and have fun with it. It’s Luxury, So Live It!!!

Summer Trend Styles on and off the Runway By Stephen Curd

Summer’s (Body) Treats by Tawny Cullen

The sun is shining its weather blessing upon us. Summer is here! There’s a generous warmth in the air that sweeps in filling us with an abundance of the open air. As we all flock to large bodies of water during this time, it’s important to keep in tune with your body’s needs. Don’t dry out with the summer heat. Here are some important tips to keep you hydrated and fueled through one of the more active times of the season.

1. Snack on this; not that

Produce, produce, produce! If there’s ever a time more in season of the best varieties of produce, it’s now! Snacking on fresh fruits and vegetables are far more satisfying than those foods high in fat and bad calories. So don’t just feed your body, fuel it. Fruits and veggies are the queens of good carbohydrates; high in fiber, easily digestible, and extremely nutritious and refreshing. Pair it with a considerable amount of water and a handful of nuts, and you have the perfect whole foods snack! Nuts contain traces of protein and are packed with healthy fats essential to body fat burning. Who wouldn’t want to eat something natural that will help you burn fat? Conscious snacking is essential to staying trim. Remember, it’s a snack, not a meal. It’s always wise to remember that the healthier options go a long way in the end. Here are a few of summer’s finest (in their most natural form) debuts in produce: Cherries Apricots Okra Mushrooms Peaches Nectarines Eggplant Haas avocado Mango Guava Green beans Hot peppers Watermelon Starfruit Corn Shallots Kiwi Passionfruit Cucumbers Rhubarb Coconuts Strawberries Zucchini Arugula 2. Portion Control (handfuls not heaping) Your hand is the best tool for your body needs. As Bob Harper from ‘The Biggest Loser’ states... “Stop guessing about portions and get it rightfor good!” Prevention.com came up with a fabulous, hand symbol portion chart. You are even encouraged to print the chart out to keep with you as a reference wherever you go. So, no excuses! 3. Hydrate Let’s face it... our kidneys need help filtering. A body’s best aid is water. If water is your best friend outdoors during the high summer heat, it should be your best friend internally as well. Don’t be fooled by it’s simplicity on the outside. Drinking water has an ongoing list of benefits to your bodies needs in order to function properly: It carries nutrients and oxygen to cells while regulating body temperature. It aids in the digestion of our food and flushes waste and toxins (detoxing). It also protects our body organs and tissues while lubricating our joints. And, the skin benefits, ooh la la! So, how do you know if you are drinking enough water? A basic equation: Take your body weight and divide that by two. Then take that number (which is half of your body weight), and that is the amount of ounces of water you should be drinking a day. So, if you weight 130 pounds, you should be consuming 65 ounces of water a day.

Madisen Beaty

Being Madisen Beaty There aren’t a lot of young actresses who can say they’ve had a coughing fit in front of their Oscarnominated idol. But after having some vocal issues during a chance encounter with Jessica Chastain, Madisen Beaty is now one of them (needless to say, she was embarrassed). Luckily, the LA based actress got her voice back and can now be found in this summer’s highly anticipated ABC Family series ‘The Fosters.’ Naturally, we wanted to learn a little more about her. Like, what’s it like to work with David Fincher...and what’s with her infatuation with boots? words by Hiko Mitsuzuka

Gotta say: ‘The Fosters’ is on our list of mustsee summer TV. What was the casting process like for you? What was it like auditioning for [executive producer] Jennifer Lopez? Yay! I’m stoked to see it too. It’s the first of its kind. It’s still rare to see LGBT couples on TV these days, let alone a couple that parents a family (or in this case, a foster family). I originally auditioned for the role of Callie, who is played by my girl Maia Mitchell. Then Scott, the casting director, called me back for Talya. She’s so much fun for me to play! Also, I never met JLo. But she did visit the set one day which was quite an experience! You’ve already worked with some great directors (PT Anderson on ‘The Master’, David Fincher on ‘Benjamin Button’). How has that shaped you as an actress? For me, both David and Paul work so differently. They have their own style that’s unique to them and they don’t stick to the normal protocol. David likes to do the scenes many times over, and to show every side of the character he can. He’s really methodical in his approach, while Paul has more of an ‘anything goes’ attitude. We did a lot of improv on ‘The Master’ and much of what you see in the film wasn’t even in the script. To me, they both have a similar visual aesthetic; they make beautiful pictures. Both experiences shaped me as an actor to push the boundaries and to constantly bring something different. It’s up to you to create work you’re proud of, and to be brave and fearless with your choices. You cannot limit yourself. You turned 18 this year. Quite a landmark age. What did you do to celebrate? I got really excited about all the stupid things you can do when you’re 18. But I don’t feel like there was a huge change. I can buy cough syrup now, which could be useful I guess. I bought a lottery ticket, and the lady didn’t even ask for an ID. I guess some people would want to do some crazy things when you turn 18, but I went to Disney World with my two best friends. We definitely dressed up as princesses one night and went to dinner. I got a picture with Mickey Mouse. It was great. I’m such a kid.

Got any college plans in the fall, or is it work work work for you? I do plan on going to college. I think it’s important to go and experience that world and of course have a college degree. This age is a really pivotal part of life, and college is a big part of that. For me, though, now is not the time. I’m working a lot, and this is what I’d like to do the rest of my life. I have some time, too. I graduated a year early, and I’ve taken some community college classes. I am technically almost done with my freshman year of college when I would be graduating if I hadn’t finished high school early. When the time is right I will take a break to focus on college. Just not now. Who are some actresses or actors you’ve looked up to? Any starstruck moments you could share? This list could be really long. But I absolutely adore Jennifer Lawrence. She doesn’t put up with the Hollywood nonsense and is so versatile in every project she does. I love Jodi Foster, Christoph Waltz, Daniel Day Lewis. I could go on. I recently met Jessica Chastain, who is so lovely and classy. I had lost my voice, and was just getting it back, so when I spoke, I sounded like a man who’s smoked 10 packs a day for 50 years. I told her how much I looked up to her, and I was about to tell her that I loved the dress she was wearing. But instead I had a cough attack and walked away in shame! What are some personal fashion musthaves you never leave home without? I am a bag lady! I have so many. Oh, and boots I rarely wear anything but boots. So you’ll always see me with a purse and boots. My purse is filled with 8 different lipsticks so I can wear whatever color I am in the mood for. I don’t know, I’m kind of a slob! My closet consists of tshirts, jeans and sweats. I ask my little sister for fashion advice and thank goodness I have a stylist for events. I try to look fashionable and just end up looking worse than if I just threw on a tshirt and jeans. My final answer for fashion musthaves: boots, a stylist, and a fashion forward sister. What’s on your summer schedule? Got any funinthesun plans? I’m going to beach it all summer. At least that’s the plan. I live 15 minutes from the beach and I never go. It’s kind of ridiculous. My family and I are also visiting Denver, Colorado, where I’m from. I haven’t been back in 3 or 4 years. Oh, and starting June 3, I am watching this new show called ‘The Fosters’ on ABC Family.

behind the scenes of “Beautiful Beaty” I fell in love with Madisen once I met her. She has such positive energy and was a complete sweetheart. I always get excited to work with people that have good energy since it makes my job so much easier. Madisen is so sweet, but I wanted to give her a bit of a fun edge which is perfect for the summer vibe we were going for. Firstly, Madisen is a fair beauty, so I had to give her skin a nice bronzed look with LORAC TANtalizer. I mixed this with a little lotion to dilute the color a bit to better match her skin tone. After perfecting the body bronzer to let it dry, I moved on to the face. I always associate glowy dewy skin with summer, so I used Chanel Hydrating Serum before moisturizer to bring a nice supple look to the skin.Finishing off with Mario Badescu Eye Gel and Glamcor Primer. I then blended Chanel Perfection Lumiere Foundation into the skin with a Beauty Blender mixing in a small amount of Chanel Soleil Tan Sheer Illuminator. I then highlighted and sculpted her facial structure using one of my favorite palettes Laura Mercier Bonnie Mine. Once the skin was finished, I moved onto the eyes contouring her natural brow

bone and lids with Naked and Buck from the Urban Decay Naked palette. Highlighting with Virgin and Sin from the same palette. When transitioning from look to look I knew I wanted to keep the skin consistent but add pops of color on the eyes and lips to bring out her features and give it that summer appeal. I stuck with bright colors, jewel tones and neon, using mostly MAC and Yaby eye shadows for the eyes and relying heavily on OCC lip tars and MAC lipstick for the lips. To intensify some of the colors on the eyes, I used shades from the MUFE Flash Color Palette as a base for the eye shadows. I really love using the Flash Colors for base since at times the eye shadows don’t pay off the way I want them to. You do have to be careful of how much of the Flash Color you use because it becomes harder to blend the powder shadows on top. On some of the looks I deepened the contour on the cheek using Smashbox contour palette and highlighted using Keyvn Aucoin Candlelight on the high planes of the face. On top of cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and a light touch on the chin and forehead, occasionally misting the skin with

Jane Iredale Hydrating Pomegranate Mist to bring back that fresh dewy skin. For Madisens lips, I either used neutrals or bright shades depending on the look of the shadow. OCC Lip Tars are perfect for summer because their shade menu is so extensive and you can make them sheer and minimal or put more on for concentrated color and shine. I loved using bright fuchsias and red/oranges for Madisen, as I felt it really complimented her bronzed skin and the look of her eyes. For the last look I wanted to take her from fun summer days to sultry summer nights, so I created a shimmery smoky eye with Kevyn Aucoin Shadow Palette #4. Elongating the eyes with MAC eye liner in smolder and smudging out to create the smokiness. Then layering the shadows on top blending up to her brow. I added more color to the apple of her cheeks using Kevyn Aucoin Blush in Fira. Finishing off the lips with a neutral pink mixture of MAC Pink Plaid and Pleasantly Pink.

With the release of Baz Luhrman’s film “The Great Gatsby”, this summer is all about celebrating the roaring twenties with bow ties, champagne towers and mastering the Charleston. To rock a 1920’s hairstyle with a modern twist, the key is to test out traditional styles like deep side parts and comb overs with updated products to help maintain the vintage look with an upgraded edge. Whether your style is more laid back or dapper, Sexy Hair has pulled together a few how-to’s on achieving the popular hair looks from the men in the film.

Jay Gatsby’s coif in the film is sure to be a popular look with gentlemen of all ages this season. This homage to the man of style can be achieved on most hair types with the proper cut and of course a supporting cast of products. To achieve Gatsby’s look, start with towel-dried hair. Mix 2 parts Short Sexy Hair Hard Up Hard Holding Gel with 1 part Short Sexy Hair Slept In Texture Crème. Use a fine-toothed comb to set hair away from the face and into desired shape. Allow hair to air dry or blow dry using a low air setting on high heat to lock in. For a glass-like shine, finish off with a light mist of Straight Sexy Hair Smooth & Seal.

Nick Carraway rocks a deep side part and tremendous shine throughout the movie. To achieve his look, use Silky Sexy Hair Lite Shampoo and Conditioner to smooth hair. On towel dried hair, apply Silky Sexy Hair Frizz Eliminator Lite and blow dry. Emulsify Short Sexy Hair Control Maniac Wax in fingertips and apply throughout the hair. Use a fine-toothed comb to create a deep side part and mold into place. Finish with some Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Touchable Weightless Hairspray for a high shine and light hold.

Tom Buchanan wears a fuller style with high shine. To achieve his look, style prime with Big Sexy Hair Volumizing Shampoo. Apply Big Sexy Hair Dense Thickening Spray to towel-dried hair at the roots. Then, apply some Short Sexy Hair What a Body Ultra Bodifying Blow Dry Gel. Blow dry hair to get maximum amount of shine, fullness and control. Mold with Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Paste for frizz free definition. Amp up the shine by applying Big Sexy Hair Big Shine spray to palms and smoothing through hair.

Wear Sunscreen WORDS By Quinn Melia Craig

“If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be IT.” –Mary Schmich It has been over ten years since Baz Luhrmann put Mary Schmich’s Chicago Tribune article to music in 1999. Appropriately titled, “Wear Sunscreen”, the hit record dispensed numerous life lessons over a nearly eight minute track. However, it emphasized that this particular tip was the only one to be scientifically proven as beneficial. Today, the importance of sunscreen is common knowledge. The endless benefits to sun protection have been proven time and again by countless studies and continued research since the implementation of the SPF system 35 years ago. We are not only aware of the immediate skin burning effects caused by UVB rays, but are also privy to the long term effects of UVA rays - which breakdown collagen and contribute to skin’s aging. While the wealth of information available regarding sun damage is no doubt helpful, the multitude of products on the market today claiming to combat, repair and prevent such damage is rather daunting. How do you know which product is right for you? When choosing a sunscreen, the first thing you should look for is a label that reads “broad spectrum”. Thanks to new rules adapted by the FDA just this year, any sunscreen including this description MUST protect equally against UVA and UVB rays. Next, make note of the SPF. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends daily use of SPF 30 (SPF 50 is recommended to those who spend a majority of their day outdoors). Try Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch in SPF 70 for the best all around protection or Hampton Sun Continuous

Mist Spray in SPF 35 for easy application. Finally, think carefully about the specific needs of your skin. If you do not use the same lotion on your face as you do your body, it is likely that you will not want to use the same sunscreen on both areas as well. When selecting a sunscreen for the face, look for a product that can provide dual care. If your skin is oily or prone to breakouts, avoid labels that include pore-clogging elements such as mineral oil, paraffin and petroleum – opting instead for ones that read “non-comedogenic” and “oilfree” such as Peter Thomas Roth Uber Dry Sunscreen in SPF 30. Those with dry or sensitive skin should consider hydrating ingredients such as oat protein, sodium hyaluronate, and omega 3’s, as well as products containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide (which reflect rays rather than absorbing them) like that of La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid in SPF 60. Lastly, if your main concern is aging skin (lines, wrinkles, etc.), make antioxidants your new best friend! Formulas containing vitamin E, vitamin C, caffeine and niacin will be your best bet. Aveeno Active Naturals Positively Ageless Sunscreen in SPF 70 is a great option.

PROTECT YOURSELF by Mathias Alan “People who get sunburned usually didn’t use enough sunscreen, didn’t reapply it after being in the sun, or used an expired product,” said Amanda Friedrichs, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in private practice in Sycamore, Ill. “It’s important that people take the time to choose an effective sunscreen and properly apply it.” Dr. Friedrichs recommends people follow these tips when applying sunscreen: Choose sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher, is water resistant, and provides broad-spectrum coverage, which means it protects you from UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously before going outdoors. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen and protect you. If you wait until you are in the sun to apply sunscreen, your skin is unprotected and can burn. Use enough sunscreen. Most adults need at least one ounce of sunscreen, about enough to fill a shot glass or the amount you can hold in your palm, to fully cover all exposed areas of your body. Rub the sunscreen thoroughly into your skin. BELLO

Apply sunscreen to all bare skin. Remember your neck, face, ears, tops of your feet and legs. For hard-to-reach areas like your back, ask someone to help you or use a spray sunscreen. If you have thinning hair, either apply sunscreen to your scalp or wear a wide-brimmed hat. To protect your lips, apply a lip balm with a SPF of at least 15. Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours to remain protected, or immediately after swimming or excessively sweating. “Your skin is exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays every time you go outside, even on cloudy days and in the winter, so remember to always use sunscreen when outdoors,” said Dr. Friedrichs. Alexis Denisof

MUCH ADO ABOUT ALEXIS DENISOF photography aleksandar tomovic by HIKO MITSUZUKA

Mimosas usually make everything better, and when one mixes them with some Shakespeare, the possibilities are endless. That’s what basically happened when director, Joss Whedon, invited a bunch of actor friends over to his house for some Sunday morning nosh and iambic pentameter. Alexis Denisof, a regular of those gatherings as well as an alumnus of the highly celebrated Whedonverse (‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer,’ ‘Angel’), is now expressing his pride and joy in playing Benedick in the bigscreen adaptation of the Bard’s romcom farce ‘Much Ado About Nothing,’ directed by Whedon himself.

“Joss would have these Shakespeare readings for fun,” Alexis remembers. “There was no expectation, it was just an excuse to hear a great story, have some laughs, have a glass of wine, and hang out with your pals. Some seed had been planted in him as these readings went on, and he was talking about how the readings are more fun than people realize and thought, ‘How can I share the fun of this?’ And boy did he figure out a way to share the fun from those readings. The spirit of these readings is very much captured in this film, which is a spirit of freedom and fun and no fear of failure just balls to the wall, let’s do it.”

BELLO

Indeed, the new ‘Much Ado,’ which was shot in blackinwhite at Whedon’s very own home and features a stylish ensemble cast reciting 1598 dialogue in a very 2013 world, is a more accessible Shakespeare adaptation, helping audiences that once dreaded high school English class embrace the Bard’s work in a new light. “We wanted to make something that was approachable and enjoyable. Not something that was intimidating or overly fussed over,” Denisof notes, crediting the director’s smart and modern approach to the material.

In other words, the guy certainly knows his way around a sonnet or two.

Sure, the language was a challenge to tackle, but so was the pacing of the production. Twelve shooting days made for little downtime. Monologues, which would usually take a full day to shoot on any other given movie set, were swiftly captured in one hour. While actors shot one scene, others would rehearse in another room of the house. Much like summer theater camp, it was a constant process. “The whole thing was a romp,” Denisof sums it up. “And the fun translates onto film. But it was also hard work, the best kind of hard work, because it was hard work we enjoyed doing.”

That enjoyment certainly continued during his experience on ‘Much Ado.’ Getting the chance to reunite with old friends (like ‘Angel’ costar Amy Acker) and recite the timeless words of one of the most important playwrights of all time was heaven. “If you want a definition of passion project,” he says, “then you need look no further than ‘Much Ado About Nothing.’”

The actor, who is also enjoying fatherhood with wife and fellow Whedonverse alum, Alyson Hannigan (“It’s probably my favorite role to date, and one that I don’t want to give up”), is no stranger to the dense work of Shakespeare. He cherishes the time he spent training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where he had the privilege of watching professional actors live on stage and learning lessons he carries with him to this day. (Best advice he’s received: “Think less and just do.”) After graduating, he even landed a gig playing the role of Fortinbras in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of ‘Hamlet.’

The opportunity to do as many different things as possible was never lost on him: “I’ve played old men. I’ve played young women. I’ve played animals. I’ve played anything you could think of. Classes on medieval dance, sword fighting, and Broadway musical singing...you get such a saturation of the incredible variety that is theater and film, and I think that’s what I enjoyed the most.”

He can’t remember another time in which he worked so swiftly. After all, director Whedon used his 2week vacation in between shooting and editing ‘The Avengers’ last year to produce this labor of love: “Joss would come up and say just one thing that would take it to another level, and we’d shoot that, and then you’d look over and just see a smile on his face and a look in his eye where you know that you nailed it. And he’d say, ‘Okay, moving on.’” Now that the movie is finally being released, will Denisof take a little time for himself? According to him, after the film’s press tour, a staycation at home is definitely in the cards... “Maybe we’ll just turn the phones off and pretend we’re somewhere else.”

Luke Campbell, who is set to make his pro debut this July, is simply one of the best British bantamweight boxers ever. He became the first British boxer in more than 100 years to win a gold in the Olympics. Now, only 25 years old, Luke will step into a new arena where he will be challenged on a totally different stage. I can speak for everyone at Bello when saying, we were extremely excited to hear what he had to say about his life as a boxer.

The Boy from Hull words Robbie Rogers photography Alexander Beer

Many athletes are creatures of habit. What are your pre match rituals prior to competing? I wear the same pair of underpants from the last 3 years of me boxing! So them pants must of been in around 80 fight [laughs]. Can you try to explain the feeling of representing your country in the Olympics? Great! A great honor for me and my family. It’s something I’ve worked for my whole life, and it hasn’t been an easy road, but I never stopped trying. And now Olympic champion? What was your favorite part of the Olympics? Opening ceremony. Competition itself? For me, I had a job to do. I didn’t care less what was around me. I was there for one thing: My gold medal! Who were some of your idols growing up? To be honest, I didn’t really have any! My mum has always been a massive inspiration in my life, and she still is.

Now that you have won a gold medal, what are your future long term goals?

Congratulations on going pro, what made you take the leap?

Your first Fight as a Pro is in your hometown of Hull, How does that make you feel?

Long term goals are now to be world champion in the professional ranks and be the best I can be.

Easy one really. I won gold at the best Olympics ever: London, in my own country. So [it] was easy to turn pro because I’d never have a better feeling [than] winning gold in London.

Amazing! I can’t wait for it! I’m training hard, and hopefully, I can make my city proud again.

What got you into boxing, and at what age did you realize you could have a future in boxing? Strange one, really, as I didn’t even know any boxer before I got into boxing. It was just something I wanted to do. Not sure why. Haha. No age really. I just always wanted to be better than I was yesterday.

Do you feel Pressure from the British Media from leaving amateur boxing and an Olympic Gold Medal Winning performance to fighting for a World Title as a Pro? No pressure whatsoever, as I’ve done everything an amateur boxer could ever do. So next step was to seek different and new challenges.

Do you have an offseason? If so, where do you like to go to relax and get away? Only a month, so it doesn’t count really. Haha. Anywhere that’s got a nice beach, good weather, also has to be a place with good food. Is there anyone in particular that you would like to come up against? Anyone they put in front of me. I’m not bothered.
