SOPHIA LILLIS: STEPPING INTO HER POWER AS A WOMAN, ACTRESS, AND ADULT “It was during a time that I was wondering what I would do after High School: should I keep doing this? Should I go to college? Maybe even see if I would do something else,” shared the talented actress, Sophia Lillis, whilst discussing her time on set of the Amazon Prime film, Uncle Frank. During a transitional period of her life that bridged the gap between childhood and adulthood, the young actress found herself part of a project in which she was working with adults for the first time. Having started off her career with the notorious killer clown film, It, her starring role on “I Am Not Okay With This,” and more, Lillis had grown accustomed to working with actors her own age. Now, faced with experienced actors and a much more advanced script, her new challenge in the industry had arrived. As she explained, “it was showing me the adult acting world and there are these people talking about their life and experiences and the jobs they have done, just saying “this is a moment I had on this set…” and I am still a kid you know? “ Getting to work with a variety of talented actors, Lillis was accepted immediately and treated like another colleague from the get go. Taking in the beauty and lessons that were right before her eyes, Lillis knew she had to step up her game. On the first day of rehearsal, it was no longer the “ice breaker” period but rather jumping right into the reading of a scene. During the first few days of rehearsal, Lillis noticed that renowned actor, Paul Bettany, took out this huge binder and set it on the table, filled with notes and more. She shared laughingly, “and the very next day I brought a bigger binder with all these things. I realized I

should probably step up my game.” And that is exactly what she did. After a few moments of nervousness, Lillis realized she did not need to keep writing down as many notes; she finally got her bearings. When having received the script, she immediately fell in love with it and was very excited to be working with the infamous director, Alan Ball. Having loved his work for a long time, Lillis expressed with excitement, “so immediately I said, yeah, let’s do it, I love. I can’t wait.” What stood out to the young actress was how sweet the story was and how for the first time, it was about a LGBT relationship that wasn’t broken. As she shared candidly, “It was something different that I wish we had more of.” Set in the 1970’s, this film illustrates what it means to be a gay man at that time and as mentioned, it takes on a more optimistic approach. Given our current times, we have come a long way yet there is still some work to do. At the end of the day, it really boils down to “just being accepting,” shared Lillis. A simple solution that yet, seems to be so difficult for many in our world. And of course, as the actress mentioned before, if more movies like this could be made, it could benefit our progress moving forward, dramatically. During her time on set of Uncle Frank, Lillis was not only exposed to a different age group, she also had the chance to work at a much different pace. Alan Ball, who as mentioned before, she admires deeply, works very quickly and for this perfectionist, it was definitely a challenge. “I want to do one take until I get it absolutely perfect. I mean that’s my ideal. If I had the choice of doing a scene until I think

it’s perfect, we may never get it,” she said with a chuckle. Everything about this experience brought to the actress feelings of pure content as she navigated through and over the obstacles, to find herself nailing her role! Now, as different as the experience was, this was not the young actress’ first rodeo. Before booking her role on Uncle Frank, this career had started way before she was booking roles. Unlike many in this industry, becoming an actress was not necessarily a childhood dream for Lillis. You see, she has a twin brother who “was kind of the more capable person,” she shared. Now, it’s not that she was really compared to him, it was more that she wanted to find her own niche which is when she started acting at the age of eight. This became something she truly loved and as she explained, “I decided to work on it because I wanted to get good at something and it seemed like a nice community. It was solely after I took a few acting classes it totally became something more.” When she was part of the Strasberg program, she was working on a variety of NYU student short films and plays from which she found herself auditioning for her role on It. Surprised at having gotten it, this was her first feature film which solidified her decision to turn this into a job. Lillis exclaimed, “I am glad I went in this direction because if I didn’t, I would not have known I could do this. My whole life I did not know I could be this, I could be an actress as a job, and have this as a profession.” With her starring role on “I Am Not Okay With This,”

and her incredible experience filming “Gretel & Hansel,” in Ireland, it is safe to say Lillis found her true calling. Here at BELLO, we wanted to dive in a little deeper and discuss her thoughts on female representation in the entertainment industry today. For the young and talented actress, she believes that we have made “great lengths already and noticed especially recently, there are a lot of strong, female main characters,” something that highlights the strides made. Her lead role in “I Am Not Okay With This,” is a perfect example of the kind of progress our society has made in representing women in film and TV. She continues on the topic by explaining that people are much stronger now and “ it’s become a thing of having TV shows with kids saving the world and mostly actresses in those roles.” For her, “just seeing us becoming more accepting, becoming more, just trying to make more films like that,” is what inspired her to continue being part of this world. As mentioned earlier, before booking her role on Uncle Frank, Lillis was at a time of her life where she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do next. Having decided to stick to acting, the young creative soul expressed with a glowing heart, “I love this job and I want to keep doing this job.” Still keeping her mind open to the possibilities the world has to offer, Lillis embraces the beauty around her and the opportunities set on her path of light as she continues to grow into the smart, beautiful, and very capable woman that she is!

HE SPOKE WITH US ABOUT HIS ACTING JOURNEY AND THE HEART OF HIS CHARACTER, DETECTIVE RIVERS.

What drew you to the role of Detective Rivers? What drew me to the role of Detective Rivers was the opportunity to get it right. What is getting it right? Mentorship. So often the importance of mentorship is forgotten. When I read the script, Rivers’ driving force was mentorship and it stuck out like a sore thumb. Not only for Mouse, but to every young person that will watch this film. I also saw an opportunity for Rivers to be a beacon of light to our beloved law enforcement in regards to leading with heart of mentorship. How are you similar to the character? Rivers and I walk the same path, which is the best version of ourself. I’ve had so many great mentors in my life and now I am lucky to add Rivers to my elite group. How are you different? The only difference is I am not a police officer in real life. What was the most challenging part about playing this role? The most challenging part was doing one takes. If you’re an actor you understand what I mean by one takes when working with kids. A majority of the time, I will show up to set

and I have about 15 minutes to get my scene to the point that I feel great about it because the star of our film is set to pumpkin in 10 minutes. Pumpkin means the max hours a kid under 18 years of age can work. However, the beauty of filmmaking is to surrender to the moment no matter how much time you have. Do you have a favorite memory from on or off set? Describe it to us. Oh shit! I almost forgot about this. Okay, I did my own stunt driving for the first time onset and the stunt coordinator said, “I know this sounds stupid, but make sure you guys put the car in park. You would be surprised how many people forget to do that when they're thinking about all their actions and their lines.” I’m like what a dumb ass, who does that? Well, I was that dumb ass and almost ran some folks over. I’ll never forget to put the car in park again. LOL. What lesson do you want audience members to take away from Charm City Kings? Don’t give up on your dreams and make sure you invest in yours and others. There’s that word again, hiding beneath the concrete. MENTORSHIP!

You’ve spoken about how your basketball career led to your acting career. Did you learn anything playing basketball that translates to your acting career today? Of course. It’s all about willpower. It’s chemistry. It’s art. It’s the ups and down. The learning lesson between and outside of the lines. It all works together my friend. If you were told you were going to a desert island and had 10 minutes to pack, what do you bring with you? I’ll grab my bible and toothbrush. I’ll figure the rest out.

In what ways has acting helped you with real life obstacles? If you see acting... then it’s not real life. You’re accessing the same space in time when you’re performing so, is there really a separation? Art inmates life. To your fans out there, what would you tell them right now? Whatever you want in life it must become a desire, that is written on the table of your heart. Nothing will be withheld from you when that happens. It’s the written word and it shall be done.

Share with us a moment during your childhood which altered who you are and what course you were on. It will be too long to explain the many moments that alter my course. The point is not what was said that altered the course, but the action one takes to make the adjustment. You just have to be willing to make the adjustments.

PORTRAYING ZACH’S STORY AND THE STORY OF EVERYONE IN HIS LIFE IS AN IMPRESSIVE FEAT, AND CAREFULLY CHOOSING THE PEOPLE WHO WOULD PLAY EACH PERSON WAS A PROMINENT GOAL. What drew you to the role of Zach? Everything from his goofy, fun loving personality to his profound use of songwriting to provide a sense of love and unity in the face of adversity. Playing a real person is always an immense responsibility, and at first I felt a lot of pressure to do Zach justice in my portrayal. The better I got to know his family and friends, however, the more secure I felt. They opened up in ways I can’t imagine would have been easy, but they did it with strength. They did it so the film could be authentic and honest to Zach’s spirit and story. I feel like I've gained a whole new family through playing Zach Sobiech. In what ways are you similar and different from him? Zach and I come from very similar places, both having had a Midwestern upbringing and very similar family dynamics. I truly believe Zach and I would be great friends if we had had the chance to meet. Our personalities and sense of self developed in a way that makes me feel as if we’re parallel versions of one another, but of course there are key differences in any parallel universe. For one, I think our song writing style is quite different, as Zach leaned more into folk, and my style is more akin to indie rock/pop. I

did end up writing a song in his style called “My Little Dancer” that I perform in a very heartwarming scene in the movie, and it was fun to explore his inspiration for music. Also, our sense of style, clothing-wise, is quite different. There was definitely a point in my life where I dressed with clothes similar to the items of his I wore in the movie. Nowadays though, I love exploring the intersection between masculinity and femininity in fashion expression. This film is inspirational and evokes a lot of emotion from its audience. What was the most emotional scene for you to film? The final scene that I'm in, in the film, was easily the most emotional. Not only was it difficult to get to where I needed to go physically and emotionally, but I was also surrounded by all of Zach’s family and friends and even my own family as well. It is a concert scene, and as I performed the song I was actually looking into the audience and seeing Laura Sobiech, Sammy Brown, and my own mother and little sister. That's only naming a few. The love I felt in that room is indescribable. I could almost see the place vibrating with energy, positive and negative, but overwhelmingly cathartic. I cry almost every time I watch it.

What is the most influential lesson you learned from working on Clouds? Zach provided me with a realignment of my perspective on death. Having experienced Zach’s love and presence while filming helped me to understand that even when our loved ones pass on, they are still with us. They’re with us in the love we feel for them and the memories we hold. They’re with us in the little or big impacts they left on the world, whether it’s a song that they liked that reminds you of them when you hear it, or a piece of clothing you have of theirs. Their love lives on with us. Do you have a favorite memory, on or off set? There was one night before filming started where my castmates Sabrina, Madison, and I went out to dinner and later explored Old Montreal where we were filming. We ran through cobblestone streets dancing and singing, just getting to know each other for the first time really. I remember going to a dessert shop that sold cups of cookie dough to eat as is, and I somehow fit it into my pocket when we went on the Ferris wheel. There were technically no snacks allowed; please don’t tell on me. It was the perfect bonding experience to solidify our relationships before going into production for a very relationship focused film. You got to work with Sabrina Carpenter, who plays your best friend. As two musicians, what was it like acting together and intertwining your acting and music careers together in the film? Sabrina Carpenter is one of the kindest souls you could ever meet. She captured Sammy's essence perfectly for the film, and together we channeled the spirit of “A Firm Handshake” (Zach and Sammy’s band name). Whether we were on set or not, we were almost always playing music or singing.

Being able to perform with her both musically and acting wise was a tremendous honor. She is a powerhouse of talent, and playing those songs together happened with ease. We connected through music immediately which made being friends on screen and off organic and so much fun. One incredible memory from our first night in Montreal is Sabrina and I walking through the town on an echoing residential road after sunset singing “Baby It’s Cold Outside". I hope we didn’t annoy the neighbors. What was your favorite part about working with director Justin Baldoni? Justin goes into everything he does with so much heart, sensitivity, and thoughtfulness. Doing Zach’s story justice is a big ask considering how inspiring of a young man he was. Justin took that responsibility and blossomed. On set, he encouraged open communication and was not afraid to be vulnerable himself. This created a safe space for us all, as actors, to go to where we needed to go emotionally and still feel supported. I am certain he is going to continue to make heartfelt and touching movies for years to come. It’s in his bones. Share with us the first audition you ever went to. What was it for? How did it go? How were you feeling? The first audition I ever went to was for a small theater production of “The Little Rascals” when I was ten years old. I was incredibly excited and prepared way more than they asked for. After about an hour of a group audition, taking turns singing, dancing, and acting with other kids, they dismissed us all and said the casting results would be available in a couple of days. After everyone left the room I went up to the director and said, “If you don’t mind, I prepared an extra

monologue and song that I’d like to perform.” To which they politely responded, “Thank you so much but we’ve seen enough to make our decisions.” Mind you, I was ten years old and mortified that they’d denied my offer. Two days later, I nervously checked the casting choices, and sure enough, I was cast as the lead, Alfalfa! Where is the first place you want to go when people are actively traveling again? I would love to visit my grandparents in Florida. All I do when I'm there is sit with them on the beach and play ukulele. It sounds like the perfect mix of family and leisure time that I’ve been missing for the past year or so. It’s been a whirlwind of a year. What has helped you stay positive and get through 2020? What has helped me stay positive is actually Zach’s sentiment to live for today. While there is much sadness and we’ve all been given a stark reminder of our mortality, we can all take a page from Zach’s book at this time. In the face of a terminal diagnosis he stayed strong and strove to make people happy. He set an example for appreciating his limited time. We may not have forever, so now is the time to tell people you love them and let them know you care. I hope for the happy physical reunion of family and friends when this virus is under control. What are you looking forward to? I'm looking forward to concerts, playing music with friends, playing board games indoors, flying to visit my family, beach bonfires, seeing movies in theaters, and mostly giving people hugs. I hate the physical disconnect that is necessary to put in place when seeing people you may love and care deeply for. I am going to hug all of them so tight as soon as I know it's safe. There is so much pent up love that I believe we will find ourselves in the midst of a renaissance by the time we turn this page of history.

On the set of “Fear The Walking Dead,” what is a funny moment you and the cast/crew shared? I have to say that even though we film such a dark and intense show, we have had some pretty funny moments on set and I love them so much because sometimes you need that moment of laughter and humor to take you out of a really dark place emotionally from filming! First of all, anytime you are filming a scene that Colman Domingo is a part of, expect moments of non-stop laughing. He’s the funniest person you will ever meet and it could be this serious and intense moment and he will just come out with a one-liner that just breaks everyone. Same with Mo Collins. I actually struggle to keep a straight face when she’s delivering her lines. She’s just that brilliant! Most of the funniest moments though are really when its just all of us sitting in the cast tent singing and dancing or listening to each other's stories! As a cast, we are kind of this big crazy family and we definitely spend a lot of time laughing together! What is your favorite part of playing on the hit series? The Walking Dead universe is so special! We are all connected and probably always will be one of my favorite parts of being in this world is the fandom. The fans of The Walking Dead shows are some of the most passionate and dedicated fans in the world. They come to conventions to support the casts, they tune in every week to watch the shows, they are amazing on social media

with the love and support they give. Also, some of my favorite parts of being in this series is knowing how lucky I am to be given the chance to do the things they trust me to do. Being on this show, I’ve gotten to do my own stunts, learn how to play instruments, drive cars!! I have been so blessed to be part of amazing episodes and have the showrunners, writers, and producers write material for me that I have always dreamt of doing. I would say though that filming scenes in Austin, TX in 4 layers of clothing in 115 degree weather does not make it onto the list of favorite parts of the job! How do you prepare for a role before stepping in front of the camera? I don’t think I have a process that I stick to religiously necessarily! I think it really depends on the project. But any time I start a new project, I always take time and read through scripts a few times and make notes! I think as an actor you just, without even trying, start to put yourself in your character's shoes and you have these moments without even thinking about it that you tap into the emotions and moods of the character!! Of course, it’s a bonus if you can meet and bond with some or all of the cast before you start to film!! Some projects you can do that and some you literally meet for the first time when you are rehearsing the scene you are about to film. But I think in general, I just get to know the material as much as I can and always make sure I am

always prepared! I always go into a project or even a new episode of Fear with a vision of what I hope to accomplish and bring to the role. Sometimes that changes once you get into the process because creating on a set it so truly collaborative so sometimes you go to set one day thinking about your c haracter's perspective in those moments and through talking with a director or director of photography, it opens your mind to possibilities you didn’t think of and can even alter the choices you make and I love that part of the creative process. But t it always starts with ideas and a vision. If you weren’t an actress, what career would you have pursued? I don’t think I would stray too far from the creative world, to be honest! I think some people are just born to be artistic and actually need to be artistic. It’s in my blood. I have a major obsession with all things hair and makeup. I am fascinated with every aspect of it so I think if I wasn’t acting I would be a hair and/or make-up artist. Doing my own hair and makeup is definitely like therapy to me. It relaxes me but also I get really excited to try new looks and products and I love the creative outlet it gives me. Especially over the last six months during quarantine when creating on set wasn’t possible. I met my hairstylist (Ryan Richman) and makeup artist (Anton Khachaturian) when I was ten. They teamed up and created my Fist Fight premiere look and they both inspire me so much! They are two of the most talented people I know! After any photoshoot or event I will spend hours trying to duplicate the looks they create! It never looks quite like theirs of course, but I love trying. When facing your fears, what are the ways that help you overcome them? OK, that’s a great question and actually a really important one for me. I definitely struggle with fears and anxiety! I have to believe we all have fears throughout life though, right? And we all deal with them in different ways. I wish I could say I was one of those people that faces their fears head on to overcome them, but I’m not.

Facing a specific fear is more of a process for me. I think one of those most important steps for me is talking about them! I have an amazingly loving and supportive family and a group of friends and I can go to them with anything. Talking it through helps me so much! I try to journal and keep track of my feelings and fears. Sometimes just writing them down and seeing it on paper makes me think to myself “oh wait - it doesn’t actually sound that scary now that I look at it”. And of course, I do try to face them when I am ready and there is something incredible about doing something or experiencing something that you were fearful of and proving to yourself how strong you are by getting through it. What drew you to audition for your role on “Fist Fight”? I was only 9 when I auditioned for Fight Fight. I was just starting out my acting journey. So you get the audition information from your agent each time and it gives you information about the character and the project and they send you the audition sides which is your script for the audition. From a really young age and even just starting out I was always pretty involved in that process. My parents always talked each audition through with me and asked me if it was something I wanted to do. When they told me about Fist Fight, I think right away I knew it was a once in a lifetime kind of audition for a kid my age. In one audition I got to do a crying scene (and I love me a good crying scene) and I got to curse and rap which is pretty cool if you're nine! It’s amazing as an actor when you get to show so many different emotions and sides of yourself in one audition. The Big Sean song wasn’t the song they used for the audition but the one they did use was definitely similar. I just remember looking at my mom when I went to go practice it like…wait, can I really say this? You’re ok with it? But my parents were super supportive — they just made sure I knew that it was ok for the audition but that I couldn’t at 9 walk around the house dropping f-bombs. I loved every part of that project. The audition. The filming. Truly one of the best experiences of my life!

Tell us more about your relationship with music. It started as kind of a love-hate relationship if I am being totally honest. There’s no short answer to this question actually. My relationship with music has changed so much in the last couple of years! Music is such a passion of mine. From the time I can remember I have loved music and loved to sing. I have always had a raspy voice though. It’s gotten a little less raspy as I have gotten older but I am still pretty limited when it comes to range and notes I can hit so it can be frustrating when all I want to do is sing a certain song, but I literally can’t because the notes are unreachable for my voice! I was always really self-conscious of my raspy voice but this year I have come to embrace it so much more! Singing brings me so much joy and recently I just celebrate the fact that my voice unique! I am learning to play the piano so I have been spending a lot of time writing music as well. It’s been an amazing outlet for me and I absolutely love it. I haven’t gotten to the point where I have shared any of my original music yet with anyone except my family, but I feel like it will definitely be sometime soon. Do you see yourself adding “singer,” to your resume? OMG, I’d love to!! I haven’t yet. There’s still this little part of me that is holding me back from doing it yet, but it’s definitely a goal of mine! To confidently add that to my resume and never look back. Growing up, what was your go-to outfit? Even at a young age it was changing!! I think when I was around 6-7 I was obsessed with anything from the store, Justice! The more it matched and the more glitter it had, the better. Then I grew out of that phase and and moved to a legging phase ages 8-10. I would not wear denim! So it was leggings every day. If it was warm weather, it was leggings and a tank top! If it was cold it was leggings and a sweater and boots. When I was about 10 I started attending movie premieres and really getting into fashion and started to figure out what my style vibe was. I met my stylist Lo VonRumpf when I was 11 and he has pushed me so much to get out of my comfort zone! One of my first fittings, I remember telling him I only wanted to wear pants and no skirts or dresses. He kind of looked at me for a minute and then literally pulled out these unbelievable dresses for me to try on and now I am obsessed. He has introduced me to the world of fashion and I love letting my style reflect who I am now and evolve as I get older. One of my dreams is to one day get invited to a fashion week show. You are sent to space for a year. Who goes with you and what are your top 5 things you bring with? So I literally just finished watching the show Away on Netflix, so it’s so funny you ask! There’s a scene where Hillary Swank is choosing what she is bringing with her on her upcoming mission and I literally did take a minute and think about what I would bring if I ever went. Who goes with me? Definitely my mom and dad. They are the best! I’d also want to bring a couple of my closest friends too but I feel like it

would be really hard choosing which ones. Can I just bring everyone I know and love? Also, can you bring pets - are they able to go because I would want my dog with me if he could travel safely! I feel like I would just want a good variety of people that bring different qualities and skills to the table so all the bases are covered! My top five things…that’s so hard but here it goes 1) my keyboard 2) a photo album of my favorite pictures of my whole family and friends 3) a journal 4) either my AirPods or a portable speaker to listen to music 5) and lip gloss of course! What projects are you working on now? If not, what’s next for you? Headed back to Austin to finish the sixth season of Fear The Walking Dead! We had to shut down production mid-way through filming due to COVID. We are all really excited to safely get back to work so we can finish this season for the fans. So right now, my focus and schedule for the next several months will be dedicated to our amazing show. I have a blast voicing a character on a Cartoon Network show called Summer Camp Island and throughout quarantine, we were able to record episodes form the safety of our own homes. New episodes of that will be coming out and that’s just so fun for me and I am always excited to be part of that world. In general, I would love to get back into working on films soon if my schedule allows. I absolutely love doing television. It’s so incredibly special to play a role for multiple seasons and grow with a character over the course of a few years. Doing a film is such a different experience and it would be an amazing blessing if could continue to do both along the way.

What are you most excited about with the release of “The Prom?" I’m really excited for everyone to see the message that “The Prom” tells in such a fun and magical way. It’s all about accepting one another, having kind hearts and open minds. Even if just one person takes something away from this film that changes them as a person, I think that’s a really special gift. Tell us more about your experience on set and getting to work with renowned actors such as Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and more. This experience is something I will remember and cherish forever. All of them are already so inspiring to be around but it was their kindness and humility that made it that much more memorable. I have so much gratitude from being able to watch and learn from all of them. I can only hope I carry that much grace and work ethic into the rest of my career. Do you recall a moment on set that had a strong impact on you? I don’t think there was a specific moment but just the overall experience was so confirming. There are so many moments in my or any 53

actor’s career where you might question your talent or path but being on that set just felt right and like I was exactly where I was supposed to be. That feeling had a strong impact on me. When did you know you wanted to become an actress? Do you recall the moment? What happened? The moment that really solidified it for me was after being on set for my first acting job, Modern Family. I had worked on sets all the time before as a dancer but this was my first experience as an actor. I always loved dancing and performing, but this time I was acting…. It felt so new and exciting being in front of the camera that way. I remember leaving that day saying, “that’s what I want to do for the rest of my life!” Share with us what your Prom was like. I was actually homeschooled during my high school years so I never got the chance to go to Prom. But I honestly couldn't have asked for a better Prom than “The Prom!” The reason I changed to homeschooling in the first place was so I would have more time to work in acting, dancing, and singing. So it only makes sense that my first version of a Prom would involve all of those things in a movie musical!

Describe your fashion style to us. Ooh, that’s a hard one because I feel like my style changes every month! But right now I would describe my style as a mix between posh, girly, effortless, and comfortable. The “off duty actress” look is usually what my outfits end up falling under. I love fashion and clothing so just experimenting with what mood I’m in is how I like to play up my style. You have to pick one kind of music/ dance style to stick to for a year. What do you pick and why? I would do R&B music and jazz funk/ heels for the style of dance. I love how R&B music makes you feel & inspires movement. It’s alluring and slow, almost like you have a secret! What role did dancing play in your childhood? It was my entire childhood, in the best way possible! As cliche as it sounds, I always wanted to be performing and dance was that outlet for me when I was young. I wouldn't be where I am today as an actor if it wasn't for the opportunities I had in the dance world first.

Looking back, what are some important lessons you have learned up until now? Something I always go back to that always gets me through difficult and important life lessons is, everything happens for a reason. Everyone’s path is different in life and we often compare ourselves to others. But I’ve learned to believe we are exactly where we are supposed to be and whatever is meant to be yours will be yours. What do you believe your purpose is? I believe and hope my purpose is to share kindness and my heart with the world. That can be through a screen, talking to a stranger on the street, or deep discussions with my close friends and family. I believe love and making meaningful connections are so important in any form. So, however I can share that would be a pretty special accomplishment to me.

Share with us what you feel when you are singing. Can you paint us a picture of what those feelings are like? When I sing, I feel like I'm the instrument between God and the Earth. As artists we are supposed to dedicate our lives to be the medium between the unseen and the perceivable. I take my time with my delivery and breath behind every word to ensure a correct translation of the music for the listener. As you step towards a microphone, what is going through your mind? What are you feeling? As funny as it may seem, but I make sure my throat is clear. I've always had the nightmare of starting to sing on the mic and nothing comes out. Besides that, I take a breath and take charge of my thoughts and try to take myself out of the way so the audience can experience something pure. What inspires your music? I'm inspired by my feelings. I open myself up and allow my soul to dictate the vibration, and words that match with it. I usually write from my future, or at least where I want to be or feel in the future by the time the songs come out. If you get writer’s block, how do you overcome it?

I use patience. Not forcing the words on the paper. Trusting that whatever is supposed to come out, will. If you had to pick a song to describe your life, what would it be? "It's Love" by Jill Scott Growing up, what role did music play in your life? Music has been woven into every aspect of my life even before I started creating it. From dancing, to getting hype with my dad over old rap groups, music has been the extra motivation for every moment in my life. What pushed you to experiment with different genres? What are you most looking forward to with your upcoming releases? The possibilities are endless. My goal in life is to merge the things we think don't have any common thread. I'm excited for my upcoming music because I feel as if I've done that again. Following my first R&B EP Familiar Strangers which merged the gap between rhythm and context; Love So Different will be a hybrid of Classic R&B lyrics and current hip-hop instrumentation. I wanted to make something for people like myself. People who are emotionally bold, but still in need of a hard-hitting track to underline our feelings.

As an actor, what has been your favorite project to work on? It's always so hard to pick my "favorite" job. My most recent acting role was "Marcus" on Netflix's Top 10 show, Never Have I Ever. The freedom you feel as an actor on this set is refreshing. It's always nice to know your personal spin on the character is accepted. Who is the “real” Dana Vaughns? The "real" Dana Vaughns is the same Dana Vaughns you think you know. I'm a big-hearted intellect who loves to study God through art and writing. I'm always cracking jokes to lighten up people’s spirits and in return that heals me as well. What truly and unconditionally makes you smile? The truth makes me smile. Even if it hurts. I love finding peace within the things I cannot change. Anytime I can be around like-minded people makes me smile.
