FASHION

N YFW FALL/WINTER

2019-2020

T he streets are bustling with hurried models, the biggest names of fashion going from show to show, photographers are trying to capture the á la mode influencers and celebrity spectaBy SHARON JANE @sharon.js

tors are wearing their best and trend-setting looks. The beautiful chaos that is fashion week season is finally here and the first Ready-To-Wear fashion week has already kick-started the season with unforgettable moments, so let’s look back at some of the highlights of New York Fashion Week – Fall/Winter 2019-2020. First off, it was highly noted that the runways of New York Fashion Week were taken over by legendary models making their comeback. The iconic Christy Turlington closed off Marc Jacobs and fashion week, making it the first time (and perhaps the last time, according to her Instagram post) she has walked on the runway since her last show over 2 decades ago. Other icons that made their highly anticipated comeback include Patti Hansen (Michael Kors), Pat Cleveland (Hellessy), and Christie Brinkley who closed for Elie Tahari’s 40th anniversary show alongside her daughter, Sailor Brinkley Cook, who also walked for the show.

These designers not only embraced simple color schemes but also simple silhouettes, unlike another trend that was seen in New York Fashion Week. A week of contradicting trends, just like seeing colorful and monochromatic collections, New York delivered extravagant, voluminous and elaborate collections which contrasted the classically tailored monochromatic designs. Rodarte certainly embraced that “over the top” can be a beautiful thing by presenting hugely-bowed gowns, towering ruffles, 80s-inspired extravagant sleeves, as well as multiple sweet prints including bows, polka dots, and hearts. The color scheme also didn’t disappoint ranging from bright pinks, lime green, electric blue, and sparkly metallic and jewel-toned gowns. Ralph Lauren, Zimmerman and Khaite gave us their definition of elaborate, which included romantically feminine silhouettes, sharp tailoring, cloud-like sleeves, and rich burgundy, brown and jewel hues. Do you think that some of these designs will make an appearance in the “Camp: Notes on Fashion” Met Gala 2019?

Gabriela Hearst's take on the neutral and monochromatic trend Credit: Alessandro Lucioni / Gorunway.com This fashion week brought 2 very wonderfully contradicting color trends: minimalism and vibrancy lavishness. New York gave us the best of both worlds with colorful and bold designs from one end to shy and monochromatic looks from another. Japanese costume designer Tomo Koizumi made his fashion week debut with vibrant, rainbow-hued, puffy gowns, which gifted New York with the most whimsical and fairytale-like show. Most people look for color trends in fashion week, but this time it was not as specific. Other designers that embraced the power of magic and rainbows include Alice & Olivia, Area, and Prabal Gurung. On the other hand, The Row, Gabriela Hearst, and Boss went along with the crème de la crème neutral color scheme. Gabriela Hearst was the perfect example of what is expected in a flawlessly minimalist collection, including dusty pink suits, butter trench coats, wide lounging pants, floor-grazing navy blue coats and relaxing white maxi dresses and jumpsuits. Some more designers that went with the classic monochromatic look include Jonathan Simkhai, Sally LaPointe, and Ulla Johnson. 37

"NYFW brought 2 very wonderfully contradicting color trends: minimalism and vibrancy lavishness" Modernity and history also came hand in hand in New York. Brands like Helmut Lang, Christian Cowan, Palm Angels and Proenza Schouler presented edgy silhouettes, futuristic touches, all-leather creations, and sharp cinches. Luar, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Dion Lee and Adeam included a modern take on accented pleats that played with new shapes in their collections. Brock Collection, Marc Jacobs, Sies Marjan and Tory Burch contrasted the modern by incorporating Edwardian-Era inspired prints, ruffles, and dramatic collars that all looked like something out of a beautiful painting.

QP

This fashion week was also one for rising designers. The aforementioned Khaite, one of the fashion week “newbies,” celebrated women by finding inspiration in various historical moments with her feminine “New Frontier” collection. Some more designer houses to watch include the colorful brand Area, Moscone, and Batsheva. Designers on the rise have really stepped up their game in New York in proving that they are to be observed closely with their refreshing creativity. New York, you have gifted us with a memorable fashion week, filled with nostalgia-inducing supermodel icons, delightful fashion contradictions, rising designers, color trend freedom, and so much more. We cannot wait to see what you will have in store for us for the next season.

"A week of contradicting trends, just like seeing colorful and monochromatic collections"

C

an you tell us a bit about your background and what it was like growing up in South Africa? South Africa is amazing! Honestly, I had an incredible childhood growing up in Johannesburg which is very similar to LA actually. It’s truly diversified as all the restaurants, work environments, sets have a huge variety of ethnicities which I miss. I speak Zulu which is a South African tribal language and also Afrikaans. The country has 11 official languages including English, hence I have so far got 3 down. Where do you live currently? Currently I am back in Los Angeles. This place is utterly nuts in a good way. I also have a house in Santa Barbara hence go back there on weekends to just be a country bumpkin and muck about with my few budding avocados and lemon trees. Something so rewarding about growing food. I grew up hunting back in South Africa, whatever wild animals we killed, we skinned ourselves and made our own jerkey in our garage. We call it biltong and, with all due respect, it blows your jerkey out of the water. I honestly love the US, love the level of patriotism, it’s moving.

After that I started to learn and develop in this craft every chance I had. You become a little besotted as becoming a better actor requires you to know and develop your own character. It’s like therapy on crack. We hear you’re starring in a new show ‘Agent’ this spring. Can you tell us a bit about your character? In what ways do you relate to her in your own life? ho has been your biggest inspiration for your passions growing up? Zoe Zante is a Greek woman who owns and manages an African soccer team which she inherited from her father. She is a true Alpha female and asserts her authority to all regardless of sex or age. It’s a wonderful trait to watch! You don’t know whether you want to slap her or high five her. Men either love her or hate her but the ones that do find her irresistible due to her radiant confidence. Confidence is always in and always attractive!! I could totally relate to her hard exterior that seems impenetrable to the outside world but inside she is very vulnerable and to those she cares about she would fight the battle of TROY. I also absolutely love her power dressing style and try to power dress myself. I prefer an outfit that says listen to me as opposed to look at me. After I read the scripts I kinda just wanted to be more like her, she was actually based on a real Greek South African woman who did inherit a soccer team and turned it into a massive success.

“Los Angeles is utterly nuts in a good way”

When was the first time you realized that acting and being in front of the camera is what you wanted to do? I actually had no real intentions of becoming an actor and was very corporate after college. I wanted to be the CEO of the world and was very entrepreneurial. I ended up burning out horribly early on and had to take 18 months off to recover back at my parents. To make extra money I had to do something so I started modeling. A local TV show was auditioning for a character that was a blackmailing, con artist and I remember it resonating with me for some reason and begging my agent to get me an audition, which we thought was impossible as I had no real experience. For the record, I have never blackmailed anyone! I just love the character's tenacity and balls. The rest they say is history. 43

Where did you film ‘Agent’ and what was that experience like compared to the other projects you’ve worked on? I had the most incredible time preparing for this role!! Firstly I went from red hair to blonde to better fit the character as Greek woman are generally very dark or blonde depending on their heritage but you rarely find a red-headed Greek woman. I am incredibly fair skinned so went on an extensive tanning regime to give further authenticity to her look. I took a Greek accent and mannerisms lessons to give her the slightest Greek inflections. I listened to loads of Greek music which really helped me get into character. The entire show was shot on an island off the coast of Africa. ld you describe the character you

portray for Addison?

It’s bloody beautiful. Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey had just wrapped shooting Serenity and a lot of our crew had worked on that set. Basically, when I wasn’t shooting I was snorkeling in the crystal clear waters.

Tell us about this shoot, what was the mood you wanted to accomplish for this editorial? We ended up creating characters I have to play!! Each look became her own little character and we just went with it. There is a stern looking KGB agent, an old school Hollywood icon and an 80’s vixen to name a few. Talent behind the scenes on this shoot was just that, pure talent. We had loads of fun and shot so quickly! As an entertainer, how do you handle criticism?

That’s it’s a glamorous profession. 98% of making a film is pure sweat and 2 % is putting on a beautiful dress and smiling at the cameras. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you on set? I didn’t have much set experience and I was asked to change my eye line which I enthusiastically responded like a good little actress, “No problem, I actually have eyeliner in my pocket.” I whipped it out right there on the spot and started putting it on. Make-Up was horrified, continuity was ruined and I was completely none the wiser. It wasn’t funny then but it’s bloody hysterical now.

“I honestly love the US, love the level of patriotism, it’s moving”

I certainly don’t enjoy it because I am a human being first! I do like criticism that is valid as it just makes you better if you are willing to hear it. It’s important to surround yourself with people you respect and trust as when they offer constructive criticism you know it’s coming from a good place as they have your best interest at heart and it would be very short-sighted to not consider what they are saying. You also need to know when someone is blowing smoke up your ass. As for trolls and gossip, I’m of the age to know when someone is simply ranting out of ignorance and insecurity and in this case you can only respond with kindness because it actually stings more and it ends the hate cycle in its tracks. What do you think is your best feature? I am completely and utterly in love with my back. It’s long and I just love the way it looks. I love wearing backless dresses to show it off. It feels good to say something out loud that you genuinely love about yourself!

QP

What do you think are some common misconceptions about actors?

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I was so incredibly shy a child that I cannot honestly believe that this is what I do for a living. I wouldn’t say I am an extrovert but now have the confidence to show all of me in front of any audience. I used to shake like crazy when I had to do public speaking in front of people as a kid. I was a nerd when I was young and say I that with complete confidence! Did you have to make any sacrifices in order to be where you are today? I miss my family every day. They are an incredible bunch.

46

47

QP

QP

48

How do you stay motivated? What is the force that always moves you forward?

You’re stranded on an island and can only have 3 items with you, what items do you have?

For me, there’s no problem staying motivated it’s staying focused which is the part that requires particular effort. I have learned that if you try to take on too much the results of everything will be terribly mediocre so being strategic and making decisions based on an ultimate goal is better than just being a hurricane. When I am overwhelmed I just pray, not for all my whims to be met and not for all the answers but just for wisdom and then I eat a bar of chocolate and all seems well in the world again. Years of practice to get to this point.

White chocolate, dark chocolate and a knife.

Do you ever think of the possibility of a different life? What would your life look like if you weren't in the entertainment industry? I am actually forever inventing gadgets and coming up with the next best thing, so I would definitely be in Venture Capital and have a start-up. I love building things from scratch. Africans are the most resilient people I know, give them a tool like the internet to educate themselves and use to problem solve and the sky will be the limit!! There are certainly a lot of girls and young women who look up to you, but who inspires you, who is your role model? I meet them all the time in the most random places. Yesterday, my new hairdresser told me her life story of how she overcame abuse as a child and is so grounded and happy today. This morning my Uber driver who is also a high school teacher who has three kids of her own, one of which just started at Harvard, adopted her students unwanted baby simply because her student asked her to and thought she would raise her baby well.

If you could choose any actor to play you in the film of your life story who would it be? Charlize Theron. She would nail my accent and can play absolutely anyone and anything. What plans have you got for the near future? I wish I could share the details but all I can say is I start shooting a series in Europe in April which has plenty of action and strong female leads. Excited. If you had a chance to send a message to all the young women in the world, what is the one piece of advice you would give them? F%*K the filters. We all use them on Social Media and in everyday life but honestly, it’s not necessary because you are always enough as you are. The world is dying for authenticity so be the one that gives your authentic self and patiently await the many reward and benefits this will bring. I even give myself this advice daily. How can people follow you and how can they watch “Agent’? My IG is @sarahkozsa. As for Agent, it will be aired in Europe and Africa via Canal Plus International. US details are yet to be released but definitely catch it if you can as it’s truly original, incredibly written and has a killer soundtrack! Addison is starting high school and is looking to “fit in” based on what she was taught as a child, but she soon realizes you cannot simply accept what others tell you. You need to

“One thing I am incredibly passionate about is bringing free, uncensored internet to Africa”

FASHION

KARL

LAGERFELD Remembering the Fashion Icon

E ven when being exquisitely controversial, Karl Lagerfeld will always be remembered as one of the greatest fashion icons of our time. He was a famously multi-layered persona BY SHARON JANE @sharon.js

known for his desire to be a caricature version of himself. Karl was a character of his own fiction that was recognized for speaking whatever came to his mind. Age was not something that defined his character as he always took some years off his actual age. Karl once said “youthfulness is about how you live, not when you were born. He lived by these words and that was expressed with his bright self-assertion and personified in everything he created and designed.

QP

62

His journey to become a monumental fashion leader began in 1954 when Karl won first place at a coat design competition in Paris (winning what is now known as the Woolmark Prize). After the competition, he became one of the juror’s assistant, specifically for Pierre Balmain, and went on to doing freelance designing for brands like Valentino, Fendi, and Chloé. By staying true to his philosophy of working hard, genuinely and sincerely in what moved him, he later became the creative director of Fendi (1965), Chanel (1983) and his own label: Karl Lagerfeld (1984). Karl taking the reins of Chanel 10 years after Coco Chanel passed away was essential for the magnificent rise of the double C label that now sits in its rightful throne as a couture powerhouse. Once thought to be a dying brand, Karl combined Coco’s signature designs from the past and revamped them to appeal the desires of the present. He believed in embracing the today and creating a vision for the immediate future. Under his creative direction, no matter how much he pushed the boundaries of the time, Chanel always carried what identified the brand. Karl continuously found ways to reinvent the label while always staying true to what Chanel represents. His designs always seemed to fit in the present and mold the future without losing a brand’s identity. Karl was the epitome of “refreshing”.

It is evident that he was a creative and multifaceted genius that influenced and inspired countlessly with his tireless creativity, confidence, and love for the perfect marriage of modernity and identity. His creative process was something that enviably came natural to him. He told British Vogue (June 2018) “I do it like I breathe. I wake up in the middle of the night and have

an idea. I put it on a card I have next to my bed and I make the sketches in the morning before I forget it.” Karl Lagerfeld, the bold man with a silver ponytail, black impeccable suit and sunglasses, will never be forgotten and, as he predicted, will forever be a legend in our hearts.

“When people talk about the good old days, I say to people, 'It's not the days that are old, it's you that's old.' I hate the good old days. What is important is that today is good.” Karl Lagerfeld 63

hat drew you to photography when first starting out nine years ago? I have always had a passion for photography and arts in general since I was young. I knew one day I would end up being an artist of some kind. What were your first interests and passions as an artist? I have always been interested in arts. At an early age I played piano and loved to paint. My highest scores in school were always in art classes. Do you have any rituals/ traditions before starting a photoshoot? Every time I have a photoshoot I create my mood boards. I believe is the best way to communicate with the model, let the model and/or the client know whats in your mind by providing specific direction upfront.

Women are all beautiful in every shape and size. And when I feel that confidence in them, I know I will get amazing images. What inspires you as a creative director? The ability to bring to life what´s in my mind. Going from an idea to the realization of that idea is a great reward!

"Women are all beautiful in every shape and size"

What is your favorite music to have on when shooting? I adore music!! And I pretty much like all kinds of music! But I really love Rock/Pop from the 80’s. How do you go about creating a bond between you and the models? Professionalism is very important to me. I do expect that from everyone who works with me. At the same time, have a good time and fun is important too! I believe this is essential and fundamental for a successful photoshoot. Who was your biggest role model growing up? Definitely my parents. From them I learned the value of hard work and determination. I´m very grateful that my parents set such a wonderful example and foundation to raise me to be the person that I am today.

83

What strategies do you use to capture your amazing photos of the female form?

Do you prefer video or still shots? I love both! I recently started shooting videos and I have to say I love it! I see I can capture a deeper personality of the models and Im really amazed by that! What was it like to become part of the GUESS family?

I have always admired GUESS ads so much and I was very fortunate to be noticed by Paul Marciano and to have been given the opportunity to shoot a campaign. Being a part of the GUESS family it is a true honor and I am very grateful. What is your definition of beauty? Beauty exists all around us and is in everyone! My definition of beauty is definitely "beauty comes from whitin". Radiance of spirit, self confidence, character and kindness to yourself and others. That´s beauty to me! Shinning form inside out. What has been your favorite photoshoot or campaign you have done? GUESS for sure! What lies in store ahead for Alessandra Fiorini? I am curious and excited to see... I am definitely working hard to see great things to come.

THE HOLLYWOOD CONSPIRATOR

BABY ONE MORE TIME BY LYNN VENTURELLA @lynnventurella Edited by Leigh Keene

Thankfully, Oscar and most of the award shows are over for another year. There are so many now that, sadly, the magic they used to create is almost gone. As always, there is a lot of controversy and squabbling about who should have won and I, for one, was very disappointed. My initial picks for favorites were pretty accurate and most of them won some awards. But my final pick won nothing, which isn’t really surprising, as the movies that the general public enjoys are not always the artistic pick. We have to remind ourselves that we DO know a great movie or show when we see one and there are many factors that play into the decision of the voters, including Hollywood politics, which often lead to our favorites getting snubbed. Movies like `A Star Is Born´, which was one of my personal favorites, only won for Best Song. However, it is a huge financial success of over 100 million in box office revenue and is still going strong after 5 months in theaters. Which makes me feel that maybe the general public knows a little bit more than the Academy.

These 13 movies are all bound to be huge at the box office and meet my expectation of entertainment. It’s interesting that they are all sequels and remakes. Come on, Hollywood. We do love our sequels and remakes but let’s not forget that something new and original is also a good investment. We rely on you to be creative. You are the best and the brightest. I know you can find something truly original. And if you do, just think of all the new sequels you can have!

I believe in art and integrity in the movies, but I also really want to be entertained. `Roma´, for instance, was a beautiful and important movie and for a second I enjoyed watching the water on the stones, but I must admit I was quickly bored. I knew it would do well and be significant at the Oscars, but truthfully I could not sit through it. So I give you my picks and recommendations based on pure entertainment value. If you haven’t seen it yet, `A Star Is Born´ will fill your emotional needs and was a favorite. My box office winners for 2019 are: (Now these are movies that I expect and hope you will truly enjoy.) TRAVEL

ICELAND BY VALENTINA SOLCI @valentinasolci

Iceland is a geothermically active European Nordic island country with a rich viking history defining some of the landscapes. It is a relatively small country lying in between the Norwegian Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Labrador Sea. Neighboring countries in its vicinity include: Norway, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Greenland.

TRANSPORTATION

The country’s main airline is Air Iceland, which conducts frequent flights from major global cities to Iceland’s capital of Reykjavik (Keflavik International Airport). Other airlines to choose from are Eagle Air, Easy Jet, Icelandair, and Norwegian. The high tourism peak in Iceland starts ranges throughout the summer months and early fall time. This is because of the warmer weather and opportunity to witness what many call the "midnight sun". The "midnight sun" refers to the 24 hours of daylight that Iceland experiences from mid-May to mid-August. In contrast, due to rigid temperatures and less daylight time, tourism drops tremendously during the winter months.

QP

December is known to be the darkest month of the year for Icelanders as some of the shortest days only witness a maximum of 5 hours of sun! In regards to transportation around the island, the two most popular options would be by bus or through car rentals. If you plan on exploring the entirety of the island, then renting a car will have to come into consideration as traveling by bus won’t take you to all of the country’s towns and villages. Aside from this, it is economically feasible and less time consuming because you can use the vehicle whenever you’d like, rather than having to follow scheduled pick up times. PLACES TO VISIT

When in Iceland for the first time, most visitors end up exploring Reykjavik because it is one of the largest seaside towns and holds lots of historic charm. One of the main attractions in Reykjavik is the Hallgrimskirkja church. One can choose to climb to the top of the bell tower in order to see views of the entire city or you can enjoy the architecture and essence of the church from the outside as well. Roam through the streets and discover local delicacies, happy hour specials, museums, and art galleries. About 30 minutes away from Reykjavik, one can find the phenomenal Blue Lagoon hot spring. This is an all-natural location where the water is geothermal and is, thus, heated from the ground up. The lagoon has, naturally, grown in popularity as the warm, light blue waters attract the attention of many tourists, and even locals. From September to the end of April, visitors can also witness the famed Northern Lights as they bathe in the hot springs. Before visiting the lagoon for this purpose, however, be aware that the aurora activity changes daily and the weather and solar activity also affects the visibility of the Northern Lights. Lastly, the Blue Lagoon has been named one of the 'Top 25 Wonders of the World', according to National Geographic, and is a definite must-see.

Moving eastward to the southernmost village of Vík, travelers have the opportunity to explore a black basalt beach. This seaside town is home to only 200 residents and lies below an enormous volcano, hence the creation of the Black Sand Beach from a past explosion that set the landscape and history of the village. Most visitors of Vík choose to take a roundtrip walk of about 8km to see an abandoned plane that resides in the middle of the Black Sand Beach. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the low buildings and hillside church of Vík. Northward we go to another seaside town located on Iceland’s east coast. This village is known as Hofn and is home to the famous Glacier Lagoon, or Jökulsárlón. The Glacier Lagoon remains a part of the Vatnajökull National Park and connects its water flow with the Atlantic Ocean. In the winter, the fish-filled lagoon attracts large numbers of seals, which may be of interest for those who enjoy seal watching. Though there are many manmade activities to consider doing, what makes Iceland so unique is the preservation of natural elements. Therefore, visitors should definitely try horseback riding, hiking, and visiting waterfalls (such as, Seljalandsfoss and Gullfoss). interest for those who enjoy seal watching.

ICELAND IS A GREAT PLACE FOR ADVENTURERS, ADMIRERS OF NATURE, AND HISTORY LOVERS TO CONGREGATE AT ANY GIVEN TIME OF THE YEAR.
