T

THE CHIC BOUTIQUE By SHARON JANE @sharon.js

he world of fashion is one that is becoming increasingly conscious and beginning to ease our concerns with fast fashion. With the efforts of dissipating the consequences of fast fashion, a love and appreciation for boutiques began to grow. Fashionistas are opting for local labels and boutiques that are attentive to details, create handcrafted garments, and participate in the side of fashion that is more philanthropic and personal. Trust me when I say that shopping at boutiques has many benefits. Each boutique has its own unique story and personality, therefore, everyone is one-of-a-kind with one-of-a-kind treasures in store. Many of the boutiques’ creators are also the designers of the garments they sell, which give them more room for artistic freedom and the ability for each boutique to add its own personal touch. If the boutiques’ owners aren’t also its designers, they will certainly be the ones that carefully select and curate the boutique to fit their aesthetic sincerely. This gifts us with more unique and interesting pieces that you will certainly not find elsewhere. It is more likely to find exactly what you need to express your style at these boutiques.

The wonderful thing about boutiques is that you are likely to find artisanal products, handcrafted with more natural and pure fabrics to last you a lifetime and tailor-made to hug figures in a way that factory made size presets don’t. By observing the sewing techniques, fabrics, and the little personal touches each boutique adds, you’ll notice the magic these artisanal garments have. It will also warm you to know that supporting these boutiques means you are supporting smaller, local businesses that began with a dream and emerged into something bigger with hard work, dedication and passion. With this support comes absolute transparency with every brand, a more personal and intimate marketing approach, and an all the more reachable and humane fashion and creator symbiosis. Thanks to the beauty that is the Internet and technology, here are some boutiques to fall in love with (that also have online stores):

U.S.A.

In the west coast, you may see boutiques that are really passionate about coming together to support a more sustainable approach to fashion. Lisa Says Gah is a perfect example of a boutique that joins forces with many other boutiques to create a platform that supports all of these local stores and creators. Based in San Francisco, Lisa Says Gah unites with ethical boutiques like Mara Hoffman, Jaggar, Ganni, Baggu, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, and many more! Amazingly, their site also dedicates to discovering like-minded creators and muses where they are brought to light on a segment called “Muse Monday.” A boutique from the sunny west coast that I have been obsessed with is Cult Gaia, known for creating the bamboo “Ark” bag which trended all over Instagram. Cult Gaia’s purpose is to bring long-lasting, one of a kind, “Objets d' Art” that are a “visual feast” while simultaneously being timeless. Jasmin Larian, the creator of this brand highlights the fact that her pieces reflect nature in that they are imperfectly perfect and that also just as in nature, not one thing is the same as the other.

In the east coast, there is a boutique named LoveShackFancy that seems to come out of a fairytale. The LoveShackFancy girl is a “dreamer, a lover, elegantly ethereal and a romantic at heart,” according to their site, and that honestly could not be more accurate. It is a magical adventure to navigate their site but it is even more magical to navigate their beautiful store. You’ll find lots of vintage-inspired pieces with an enchantingly soft palette of colors and patterns on hand dyed fabrics. LSF was founded by Rebecca Hessel Cohen who started out by designing bridesmaid dresses and later created LSF in Manhattan, which is inspired by her love for all that is vintage, travel and her mother. For the minimalist at heart, New York City-based boutique Frankie offers timeless basics that bring an effortless flair to your everyday looks. This store also provides exclusive pieces from other emerging trendsetting designers from Australia, Korea, Spain and more. Some more New York-based boutiques that are worth checking out include the perfectly urban Rag & Bone, fiercely femme fatale Are You Am I, trendsetting all-around cool Orseund Iris, and the designed in NYC, made in Italy Mansur Gavriel.

FRANCE

France is known for their chic boutiques that create fashion-forward clothing. Maison Cleo is a French boutique that has received a lot of buzz recently, catching the eye of celebs like Emily Ratajkowski, Josephine Skriver, Leandra Medine, and more. It is known for having 100% transparency on exactly what your money goes for what when buying a Maison Cleo Garment (fabric, production, etc.). The mother-daughter boutique also values the use of natural fabrics and the art of handmade, quality products. It is important to note that both the mother and daughter are extremely talented and have a history of working in fashion and seam-stressing, which is seen in their simple but fiercely detailed, “Made in France” label. Something I also love about this boutique is that they include a free scrunchie in every order since her mom was known to always match her outfit with her scrunchie. And the scrunchies are very cute!

On the more daring side, is the label Boyarovskaya which its creators include a fashion student and photographer: Maria Boyarovskaya and Artem Kononenko respectively. After graduating from the notorious fashion institute, Istituto Marangoni, Maria went on to be a junior designer for Givenchy and John Galliano. You will also see that the co-Founder, Artem, took the grand majority of the photos the label uses on their site. The couture touch is definitely evident in all of the collections this Paris-based label releases, and every garment is notably fearless. If you would like to check out more boutiques based in France, Sezane, Rouje and Etudes Studio all have that effortless French fashion flair.

SPAIN

There is something about Spanish boutiques that is so fresh and airy, that it is captivating. I was especially in love with a shoe and belts boutique that is 100% made in Spain, named About Arianne. This label focuses on setting their own trends and creating locally handcrafted shoes with high-quality materials. The founders, Ariadna Guirado and Ernest Vidal, joined forces to create the shoes that they noticed were not seen in stores but seen in their hearts. About Arianne is a label that combines design with comfort and craftsmanship with consciousness. It’s truly heartwarming to see how much thought and dedication is put to every pair of shoes they make so that they can be a long lasting treasure for those that discover them. According to their site, “Every detail is thought through to make them distinctive and unique. Details really make the difference.” Paloma Wool is a Barcelona-based boutique that really intrigues me. Created by Paloma Lanna, this is a sincere and thought-out label that is passionately fixed on the importance of art and the exploration of thereof. “I like to study the space and ideas that evolve around the act of getting dressed by telling the story of each piece through different artistic disciplines,” said Paloma on Need Supply Co. The act of getting dressed is something she mentions a lot in her brand’s identity, as it is important for the brand to reflect the personal act of getting dressed

33

QP

as we choose what colors, fabrics, and shapes to wear and identify with. Paloma hopes to uncover this experience with every collection she releases. It is interesting to note that Paloma photographs all of her campaigns but welcomes other artists’ perspectives and interpretation of her collections. For more of the Spanish aesthetic, check out these boutiques: Log, Aimee, Emma Pardos, Les Fleurs Studio and Antonioli Ibiza.

AUSTRALIA

If there were a country that is known for its cute boutiques that are taking over the online shopping scene, I would definitely say it is Australia. If you’re looking for perfectly laid-back, feminine and contemporary outfits for summer, Australian boutiques are just what you are looking for. The first Australian boutique that caught my eye is Sabo Skirt, which is a notorious online boutique that had a humble beginning and is now taking over fashion week. It all began with two best friends from Queensland (who are now sisters in law) and a love for fashion. What started out as two girls blogging about their style later turned into an online fashion phenomenon where their Sabo Luxe collection was featured in New York Fashion Week 3 years in a row and these two best friends were featured in Forbes’ 30 under 30 in 2016. It will be hard to not fall in love with their pastel, romantic, Mediterranean goddess aesthetic. SIR The Label is another Aussie online boutique that has been taking over. This contemporary label combines the perfect balance of “simplistic wardrobe essentials and feminine silhouettes.” The SIR of SIR the Label stands for “separates, intimates and ready-to-wear styles,” which is honest with what they offer. Every collection is designed to be versatile and distinctive and takes inspiration of the past and present to create something that is timeless and withstands the ever-changing world of fashion. For some more summer lovin’ online Australian boutiques, take a look at Verge Girl, Tiger Mist, Sofia the Label, Ksubi, and With Jean.

SOUTH KOREA

SIR THE LABEL Image from lookbook featuring Tahnee Atkinson

If you find yourself hungry for discovering fashion that is different and unique, South Korean boutiques are for the adventurous fashion explorers at heart. Korean boutiques and designers really love to proudly showcase their artistic freedom by creating extremely one-of-a-kind clothes that I assure you will not find elsewhere. They also have such a unique perspective on how clothes should be worn. In fact, you will notice that there are no rules or boundaries in Korean fashion. You may find skirts over pants, half skirts over a t-shirt dress, insanely irregular hemlines or blazers made from two halves of completely different fabrics. Honestly, Korean brands’ creativity and novelty always surprise me in the best way possible. There is such an enormous variety of styles to fit your aesthetic whether it be elegant, trendy, contemporary, minimalistic, futuristic, edgy, Avant-Garde, sweet, and more. South Korea’s impact in fashion and popular culture is also increasingly growing globally. This is evident in the Seoul-based now global site, Storets that offers off-the-runway looks that are sophistically made but kind to your budget. It is no wonder that this store caught the eye of celebs like Gigi Hadid, Vanessa Hudgens, Jessica Biel, Margot Robbie, and Chiara Ferragni. An online boutique that has been increasing in popularity recently is IRENEISGOOD The Label, created by Kim Irene, a model, fashion and beauty host, stylist, and digital content creator who is also dubbed as an "ambassador to the buzzing South Korean fashion scene" by Vogue Magazine. Her rainbow-filled, unicorn-inspired, and joyful brand was inspired by Irene’s mantra: #GOODFORYOU, where she hopes to inspire her magical world of empowering individuality and encouraging good vibes and self-love with her designs. If you want to go for the off-duty (fun) model look, IRENEISGOOD The Label is perfect to achieve it. Some more South Korean boutiques that are a must to check out are the feminine Romanchic, minimalist accessories and bags label MuteMuse, the cute and sweet store Chuu, vintage-inspired Somedays Store, and edgy fashion-forward labels like Narcissus Ego, KYE, SetSetSet, and The Greatest.

What is most fascinating about boutiques is that you never cease to discover new ones that surprise and enchant you, and I think that is the greatest magic they hold. Try taking a peek at your local boutiques or find ones from far away places that may just be everything you have ever dreamed of. Who knows what we will find next?

Y

ou just got done with your first tour of the U.S. and U.K. What was it like getting to see all your fans in person? How did you keep yourself powered up show after show? They were probably my favourite headline tours so far! The US was cool because I was playing headline shows for the first time in a lot of the cities. It was really cool getting to see everyone’s face whilst playing and get to know them a bit before. The UK was amazing because they were pretty big venues and we had a lot of special guests which made it even more exciting. I also had an all-female line up at these shows and I hope people discovered a lot of new artists through that because I feel like there’s so many girls in pop that people are yet to discover. What was it like after growing up in a small village in Scotland, to suddenly become supremely famous and travel all over the country and the States? I moved to London when I was 17 to write music and that was a huge change. I’ve always loved traveling and going places on my own so I found it pretty exciting. I feel like I take a bit of Scotland with me wherever I go because I think we’re pretty unique. The dry humor (that sometimes offends people), the beige diet and generally being a normal person ha! What I love about Scotland is how genuine and upfront people are and I think that’s something that I miss. It’s hard to find elsewhere. Who were your favorite artists growing up? Who are they now?

When did you write your first unofficial song and what was it about? It was called ‘Dreams Become Reality’. I was 10. I wrote it on my crappy keyboard and it was terrible. It sounded a bit like Disney gone wrong and was about what the title says, your dreams becoming reality. Coming from a traditional family lifestyle, did you ever receive any backlash for wanting to pursue your passion? Not from my family but I definitely had a lot of people making fun of me, trying to put me down etc., from where I lived. My type of career ambitions were definitely out of the norm and I was very young so I probably did sound a bit deluded but you’ve really got to believe in yourself otherwise no one else will.

"I take a bit of Scotland with me wherever I go"

Any female who wrote her own music. I also loved the classic pop stars like Britney/Christina etc. I’m half Swedish so I grew up with a lot of ABBA in the house. My favourite artists right now would be H.E.R & Daniel Caesar. I actually have a playlist that I update regularly with 11 songs you should know right now. https://open.spotify.com/user/ninanesbitt/playlist/6lsSGgQqWoRKzuJlFfc90C?si=UJGrBJf9TsKtjJm0SXxbDw What is one of your favorite childhood memories? Probably playing The Sims. I was an only child so needed something to keep me occupied and The

51

Sims was my absolute favourite thing in the world.

Since your first upload into the music world of YouTube of your cover of Taylor Swift’s Fearless, would you say your style of singing has changed? Definitely. I’ve never had any lessons or professional help so it’s something I’ve had to teach myself over a long period of time. I’m not a natural singer but I think I have a unique tone so I’ve just worked on that and learning more technical things throughout the years. I was also a child when I started singing so naturally, my voice has matured.

Your work has a very nostalgic 90’s R&B sound, what inspires you when you write your songs? Some of my songs are definitely inspired by that era but others are more singer/songwriter/straight up pop. I also write for other artists so I dip in and out of genres a lot. My 90s r&b pop-influenced songs all started out with me writing for a girl band but then I decided to keep them. I love just trawling through Spotify playlists and finding new stuff. Who was your role model growing up? I didn’t really have one in particular but definitely, females that wrote music were inspiring to me. I listened to a lot of Alanis Morissette in my teenage years and found her really inspiring. I love how she just

dressed casual and wrote these incredibly emotional lyrics. It felt very real and honest which is something that still inspires me today. We’re obsessed with the pink! Did you dye your hair just for the album or was it more of a personal transition in life? It was for the album coming out and also because I like to change my hair a few times a year. It’s currently blonde. I just get bored so easily and whenever I change my hair I feel like a new person. It keeps it fresh! I wanted to be bright and colourful when the album came out so I would match the pink lotus on the artwork. The brown hair symbolized the mud and the growth. The pink symbolizes the flowers. The blonde is the sun. Do you prefer when songwriting to portray your own story or do you like to reach to other people’s lives and write theirs? A bit of both. This album was mostly autobiographical but I did draw on friend’s experiences. I try to not wreck my own life just to have writing material (lol) so it’s important to be inspired by others too. I feel things quite deeply so I don’t find it hard to put myself in someone else’s situation.

How would you describe your personal style? How has it evolved since your first hit singles back in 2012/2013? I think I’ve just grown up like anyone would from

17-24. Your style changes so much between those ages, especially as a woman. I’ve definitely always had a mix of feminine/romantic and masculine/androgynous. I was always really inspired by Rihanna’s style when I was younger. It was feminine but had an edge. Do you have any hobbies you enjoy when not performing or songwriting? To be honest my whole life revolves around music right now and I basically don’t have any days off. One thing I miss most is cooking. I love making a meal from scratch and could imagine me getting more involved in that when I’m older. You have such a powerful voice! Do you have any pre-show rituals you practice to get the “heebie-jeebies” out? Thank you! I like to jump up and down and listen to pop remixes to get me ready. I’m naturally a very, very chilled person so I feel like getting my energy levels up so that I match the crowd is really important. People will often match your energy, which is something I’ve learned. I always want people to not only enjoy the music but also have a fun time. What can we expect from Nina Nesbitt in the near future? A lot of shows this year and then new music… which will all be revealed soon.

"I always want people to not only enjoy the music but also have a fun time"

MELISSA

PELLONE A

FASHION DESIGNER

s a renowned fashion designer, how do you maintain being on top of your game? As a Designer I really have to be aware of culture, the arts, and of course the ever changing industry. Having the ability to recognize trends emerging while maintaining a unique point of view when designing is quite challenging but it is what I love most about it! Tell us about Melissa Pellone the Designer and how you set yourself apart from all the other designers. As a Designer, I am known for feminine and flirtatious dresses and separates that have a play on classic chic with beautiful and intricate details that are modern and fresh yet still with a touch of trend. A born New Yorker who evolved into a California girl my designs are equally inspired by both my influences from living in each fashion capital. I believe the most important way I have set myself apart is establishing a unique point of view, and maintaining it. Each piece is designed as an expression of a specific aesthetic I felt was missing from the market, (and most importantly my closet!) I also am involved in every aspect of my business. . What causes do you support and why? I really support women in business and female empowerment. It is such an important issue today. Education is another. I am always support the next group of emerging talent. I mentor and also speak on different fashion and business panels. I am a graduate of The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and this month I have

QP

been invited to speak at orientation for the new class. I am really honored because I know and remember how impressionable and important that day can be, and of course I am also very excited about the opportunity! What message would like to send to aspiring fashion designers? The most important thing I have learned is to find your own style that is uniquely you. That way no one can ever design or create the way you do. Which fashion designers do you love and why? Coco Chanel for redefining fashion for her time. Alexander McQueen for his artistic conceptualization and Betsey Johnson for her fun vibrant spirit that we see in her design and personality. Your publicist mentioned how committed you are in your craft, where do you get the passion from? I had the opportunity to pursue any field of study or career path I wanted, and I chose this one. I think there are a lot of choices out there that are much easier. But I had to follow my heart, and I am professionally trained with an Arts degree in Fashion Design so I have a lot of respect for the entire process. I am involved in every aspect from concept to creation, then even beyond into the business side and personally oversee each piece we make here in Los Angeles. Describe yourself in three words. Creative, passionate and driven.

THE HOLLYWOOD CONSPIRATOR

OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW By LYNN VENTURELLA @lynnventurella Edited by LEIGH KEENE

Ithe listened to a SAG podcast recently that talked about threat to actors by the new media giants. SAG, Screen

Actors Guild, is the union that was created to help and protect actors. They talked about how the money has changed and that the budgets for creating new content are so huge now that even the original studios can’t compete. The podcast gave these numbers as the production budgets for 2019 (in US Dollars): NETFLIX: 12 billion, AMAZON: 6 billion, HBO: 2.5 billion and HULU: 1 billion Yes, it’s no longer millions, it’s billions. What has also changed is how success is measured. With the traditional studios, the risk was much bigger as success was judged by the movie’s first week at the box office. A bad box office and everything could be lost. One costly mistake like Kevin Costner’s Waterworld and Dustin Hoffman’s Ishtar and jobs and studios were ruined. On the other hand, a great box office blockbuster like Titanic or Star Wars created fortunes and huge stars.

shows and getting excited about the new seasons of the Bachelorette and Master Chef. Netflix, you disrupted the media and changed the game, which is great and you are still the hero, but you need to use those billions for something extraordinary. We are hanging in with you but we need something juicy. July does seem a little better. I am excited about the final season of Orange Is The New Black, as one of their original groundbreaking shows. Also, we can look forward to season 3 of Stranger Things.

This uncertainty also caused the studios to hedge their bets and they were less likely to take risks on unknown actors, which resulted in fewer actors working or getting a break. Since the subscription services are not about a one-time visit to the movies and more about customer service and keeping memberships, one hit or miss won’t change the scenario. What the new services need is constant new and different content so we, their customers, don’t get bored. Unfortunately, these streaming services have actually spoiled us and created their own issues as we now have come to expect continuous amazing content. When the content is disappointing, like I found in June, then we are lost and look to other networks and streaming services to entertain us. Or maybe I am just still hung over from Game of Thrones, which nothing compares with. In fact, June was so disappointing that I found myself binging on old

I am hoping that The Last Czars a new Netflix original coming in July will be the show that rejuvenates my interest and excitement. The Last Czars takes an in-depth look into what led to the fall of the Romanov dynasty. Through Nutopia’s mega-doc lens, we get the best of both worlds. It uses dramatized scenes of historical events and takes an in-depth look into the history that came before, during and after. Part drama series, part documentary with a strong A list cast, which includes Ben Cartwright (Sherlock Holmes), Oliver Dimsdale, Elsie Bennett, Duncan Pow, Robert Jack, Steffan Boje and many more. This show with this cast and original format could be the big win we all need right now from Netflix. Hulu looks like they will have a good July too, with their new titles. Notable additions to Hulu include Veronica Mars, Airplane!, An American Werewolf in London, Bad Santa, Big Fish, Bill Durham, Child’s Play (1988), Con Air, Desperately Seeking Susan, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, Hard Candy, Minority Report, The Quiet American, Reservoir Dogs, Rocky, Sleepy Hollow, Spaceballs, Superbad, The Silence of the Lambs, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Gone Baby Gone, and Apollo 11.

Midwest where the teenage contestants keep dying under mysterious circumstances. A strong and interesting cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Allison Janney, Denise Richards, Kirstie Alley, Ellen Barkin, Brittany Murphy, and Amy Adams. Going back to what SAG said in their podcast about the threat to actors. I see no threat. I see more opportunity than ever before. There is no downside that the streaming services have created. There is just more work, more choice and more competition. The only downside I can possibly see is that our expectations are higher than ever and we can’t settle as easily for mediocrity, but then why should we, when they have billions to spend on keeping us well entertained?

These are some really solid titles that show while Hulu may seem behind Netflix, they’ve got a great selection of movies you’re not going to find on the streaming giant. I personally am looking forward to Drop Dead Gorgeous, which is a mockumentary about a pageant in the NETFLIX´S THE LAST CZARS
