Editors Letter I wonder what “Intervention” means to each and every "VULKANERS." In case you were wondering, that would be you. So, why “Intervention?” Why think of one? Why do we really need one? A question I doubt many have asked themselves…or anyone for that matter. Well, I guess that makes me one of the few. You see, a recent intervention happened to me and here is how it could help. I moved to America to live a life of the stars and to make a name for myself. Throughout the years, the passion evolved to comfort. Keeping up the luxury became more of an important task which led me to forget what I really came here to do. Years passed and things started being stagnant. Every day seemed like an pendulum which never stopped. That’s when I came to the self realization to find my true calling and purpose after a series of incidents which forced me out of my comfort zone. It was not easy at first. Trying to find the same routine you used to have. However, once the mind is free and open to possibilities, everything comes knocking at your door. Just like the universe of endless possibilities Intervention brought me to being here, leading the Vulkan team. We are not going to be your usual magazine where you might flip pages of a photobook. We are going to share the voices that need to be heard. Uplift one another and grow as a community. That’s the new VULKAN and that’s our INTERVENTION. Looking forward to the jouney with all my VULKANERS.

Share with us how your journey as an actress has evolved. What are some important lessons you learned? To trust your own instincts, surrender most things, and don’t personalize ANYTHING. What inspired you to pursue acting? What does it mean to you? Acting found me! A manager saw me while dancing on the Grammys with *NSYNC and convinced me to go on one audition that ended up being my first movie. Acting satiates a part of my creativity I never knew existed as a dancer. I have always loved the challenge. Who is a director who you hope to work with and why? Taika Waikiki. He is a creative genius and I truly love everything he makes. A musical with Baz Luhrman would be an absolute dream. Growing up, what was your favorite TV series? Did it play a role in why you decided to pursue acting? I actually never really watched tv! I was always on the go, spending hours after school at my dance studio, doing homework in the car and as i got home before bed. Define dance in one word. What advice would you give to emerging dancers/ actors? Embodiment. My advice is to learn from as many different teachers as you can, keep up your ballet lessons, and become resilient!! There are a lot of no’s but there will always be a yes coming. Tell us a story about a time something or someone intervened in your life and why it was so important. Acting intervened in my life! I had no idea the path my life would take, and I truly feel in awe most days. It has taught me to really trust my life.

Venice Skateboarding Stuff @veniceskateboardingstuff
Opened since 1998, Venice Skateboarding Stuff is more than just the first skate shop to open on the boardwalk…it’s a piece of history. You see, a few decades ago, a small group of outcasts from a poor section of Los Angeles area known as Dogtown helped spur the resurgence of skateboarding which changed the world of skateboarding forever. In this shop, the top two walls in the back are the home for some of the OG legendary skaters’ boards, and autographed! Oh, yes! As you go around the shop, you can find a variety of boards in different shapes and designs made for your unique style. When you look to your right, there is a a photo of the store manager and Jay Adams who sadly passed away five years ago but his spirit remains in the heart of the skating world. Located on the Venice Boardwalk, this is one of THE skateshops to check out for its boards, it history, and its hang loose vibes.
Derrek, who has
been working there for two years now,
defined skating as “doing whatever
I want to do, free-
dom of expression,” something we all

Rip City Skates @ripcity1978
Rip City Skates opened on April 1st 1978 and was the hub for young kids who were skaters or just had extra coins to play on the pinball machines all day. The owner, Jim, has been there since its opening and this beautiful family-owned shop has a true heart and soul. They are actually coming up on their 44th anniversary! Wow! Selling everything you need for skating from boards to protective gears, to comfortable clothing, they even have roller skates! Walking through that little shop is an experience in itself as you can feel the history in it. Over the years, Jim has seen waves of individuals of all ages and even the kids who are now much much older come by to reminisce. “Skating has an outlaw nature to it,” opened up Jim. It attracts different groups of people and brings them together. Make sure to check them out and give a warm hello to Jim!
As Adam, a worker there shared, “skate-
boarding was the most important thing in my life when I was younger. It's form of individual expression.”

A family-owned surf and skate shop in Santa Monica, California, Bay Street Boards is run by two brothers, Galeazzo and Sante, who grew up in this world. The store opened up back in 2014 and has become a hub for skaters and surfers looking for some of the best gear in Los Angeles! When meeting Sante, it was immediately apparent that surfing/ skating was part of his person and his kindness was truly a breath of fresh air--especially is in this city. “My dad is a big surfer,” he shared. “When I started skating, it was the tip over.” Always working on making this shop a home and build a community of other skate/surf lovers, you not only shop for gear but also gain knowledge, heart, and friends! Take a look for yourself and enjoy all that Bay Street Boards has to offer.

Born and raised in São Paulo Brazil, Ivan Monteiro is a skateboarder, voice actor, and designer! His love for sports, skating, and competitions started at a young age, and being able to channel all his energy into skating was thanks to his parents who, despite not having much, always found a way to give him everything he needed to turn a dream into a reality. Skating is what feeds his soul and in hopes of becoming a Pro, he continues to pour his blood sweat and tears into it. But that’s not all! Ivan Monteiro is also a fashion designer which all started when he wanted to integrate the comfort of skating clothes and a vibrant fashion. A bright soul in this world, it was such a pleasure meeting Ivan and we can’t wait to see where he goes next…

Share with us your relationship to skating and how it has evolved. What your upbringing was like. My upbringing was very humbling, I came from the hood in Brazil, despite not having much my parents always managed to get me everything I needed to skate, my relationship with my board it’s always evolving I feel like it's so much better now than it was before, growing up I really had a crazy lifestyle, practicing 8 hours a day and end up quitting school at 14 to pursue my career full time, I kind of lost the essence of skating when I was a teenager for many reasons, but I definitely found it again, I’ve been enjoying skating the streets with my friends and just being creative with my board.

Describe to us how it feels when you skate. What do you hope to accomplish as a skater? It feels amazing! To be honest, skateboarding is the only thing that I can focus on and do without wanting to stop for over an hour or hours haha. There are a lot of accomplishments I hope to reach as a skater but at the top of the list is turning Pro. Talk to us about times you experienced failure/obstacles and how you overcame them. I think the biggest failure I’ve faced in the past few years was the last contest in Rome, it was the last Olympic qualifying event and I had big chances of making it, but unfortunately, I was never able to perform my best that day, it was really hard to deal with, for weeks I was just rethinking the runs and rethinking what I could’ve done different but I feel like I learned more from that then any other contest I’ve ever skated in my life which I’m very grateful for, it gave me a lot of experience dealing with such a loss, high expectations from all your sponsors, friends, family, country, supporters etc, I feel like I let so much people down but I’m very happy where I’m at now I think I needed to go through that to evolve and get better.

What role does fashion play in your life? Define beauty in your own words. Fashion plays a big role in my life is definitely easier now that I got to get so many free products but I always loved it and I definitely want to do something with fashion in the future after I’m done with Skateboarding. I designed 2 collections for my brand in 2020 and I plan to bring them back later this year.

Explain what it’s like when you are competing on a skateboard! For me it’s just the best feeling, I am a very competitive person and I just love the pressure of a contest, especially when you’re competing with people just as good or better than me, it really makes me push so much harder than I ever would. Favorite part of competition? Winning, I’m gonna have to be honest with this one haha everyone goes there to have fun enjoy the trip hang out with the homies but it’s a competition and the goal is to win, so at least for me the best part of a contest is winning. Plans for the next year? What would be a “dream come true”? Yes, I have a lot of plans for the next year, I plan to drop my video part in the next few months and drop another one by the end of the year, as far as competition I’m looking forward on the Olympic qualifying events for 2024, Xgames, SLS and all the other contests, the goal/dream is to get a medal in the 2024 summer Olympics, I know it’s a long way but I got a plan and I’m sticking to it.

FLOAT WITH A CAUSE Photos and Writing by Alexandra Bonnet @alexbonnetwrites
FLOATIFIED @floatified
From snowboard instructor to Nordstrom salesperson to head of FLOATIFIED, Drew Scollon represents hope, passion, and ambition. During the lockdown, things were tough (as I am sure many of us can relate to) and luckily for Drew, he found solace in riding his OneWheel (an electric self-balancing boardsport.) Despite the world shutting down, this activity gave him the opportunity to explore the outside like never been. As he expressed, “oddly enough it was actually one of the best times of my life.” Recognizing the therapeutic aspect of it, the OneWheel rider decided to take it to the next level with this “Land Surfing,” which supports the treatment of issues such as addiction/substance abuse, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. Drew offers lessons for birthday parties, team b building exercises, and more. "It opened up a whole new realm of possibilities for exploration and adventure that I never would have dreamed of before finding the Onewheel,” shared owner of FLOATIFIED, Drew Scollon. "This change was so beneficial for my mental health that I realized I wanted to share the experience with others, especially those struggling with addiction and other mental health conditions.” Seeing the light at the end of the dark tunnel, Drew inspires us to keep moving forward and find what fills us with light! So, why not give it a try?
37
THE INTERVENTION ISSUE
Tell us about your first experience with a OneWheel. My first experience with a OneWheel was just seeing someone riding it and just knew I had to have one. I ordered one that night without ever even riding one. I fell in love immediately, and it totally changed my life. How do you go about getting people to join the OneWheel Community? As soon as you get a onewheel you automatically become a part of the amazing Onewheel community and have hundreds of like-minded friends. The onewheel community is like no other community in that way. Everyone is super positive, active, adventurous, and fun-loving.
Why OneWheel? What does it mean to you? Why Onewheel? It feels just like snowboarding. I grew up in Big Bear and snowboarding was my passion. Now that I live at the beach, getting up to the mountain every time I want to ride is impossible. Now I can basically go snowboarding ANYTIME, ANYWHERE. It has really been so therapeutic and beneficial for my mental health plus it provides freedom and unlimited potential for a fun adventure and a whole new realm of possibilities that never existed before.
What are people's initial reactions when you tell them you OneWheel? Buying a onewheel was hands down the best money I've ever spent. Honestly, it's worth 10 times more, the amount of fun and therapy it provided me is literally priceless. Onewheels literally have the power to change people's lives, and anyone in the Onewheel community will tell you the same thing. They are nothing short of life-changing. I can't imagine living without one now. Can you dive deeper into how OneWheel saved you? My experience with the Onewheel was so life-changing and therapeutic that I decided that I wanted to share the experience with as many people as possible, especially those struggling with mental health issues and addiction. I was inspired by the success of surfing as therapy and realized that onewheels had even more potential because you can literally ride a onewheel ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, and are not limited by how close you live to the ocean or the conditions of the waves or even what time of day you want to go ride. No paddling and waiting and trying to catch a wave, you just hop on your board and you have unlimited turns.
"The Onewheel saved me by giving me a fun new activity to replace bad habits, the motivation to get outside and explore the world, as well as a whole new group of positive, like-minded friends." SPRING 2022

TONY FERREIRA STYLE & SUBSTANCE Photos by Ryan Jerome @ryan_jerome Writing by Alexandra Bonnet @alexbonnetwrites
Fashion is no mystery to the incredible personal shopper at Saks Fifth Avenue, Tony Ferreira. His love for clothes started at a young age when he would help his mom and sister get dressed… “It all started at home and around town,” he shared. Watching his sister design her own clothes and patterns were so incredible to the young Tony and when people started asking him for fashion advice, it gave him the confidence every aspiring personal shopper wants! And now he styles women from all over the world and different areas of expertise! Picking the best pieces in his opinion, he brings them over to Beverly Hills where he can mix and match the perfect look for his favorite customers! An absolute delight and doll, Tony Ferreira truly inspires us all and continues to wow those around him with his beauty, kindness, and fashion sense! When selecting pieces and looks for your clients, what is your process? Selecting clothes and looks for my clients comes very easy for me. First, I always make sure whatever I choose is flattering for their body type and brings out their best features. Also, I always make sure that my choices for them make them feel confident and bring out their personality and individual style. How do you go about finding pieces that will highlight their true self? Getting to know who they are, what makes them happy, and what they represent. What are the dos and don’ts in fashion? The biggest don’t is don’t dress your client in something that looks like they are in someone else’s clothes. They will feel not confident and uncomfortable. It’s ok to push someone into something they have never worn before as long as it still makes them feel great about what they are wearing and looks like they aren’t trying! SPRING 2022

Tell us more about the fashion shows you attend. Do you have a personal favorite? Explain. Love going to fashion shows in Paris and Milan but my favorite is actually going to the showrooms instead. At the showrooms, you can touch, feel, and see the details! That’s the most important when choosing for your clients!

What are your top favorite runway pieces that you selected for Saks? Pretty much every piece I select, I LOVE! I have to love something before it comes into my office and goes on my clients! Ava Vegas @avavegas
With such a wide variety of talent across the globe, it was amazing meeting Ava Vegas, a musician from Berlin. Currently playing and recording new music in Los Angeles, it was her style that caught our attention at first. Humbly she shared, “I don’t know if I stand out and I usually don’t think too much about my style. I tend to pick what is comfortable and in my closet.” Pursuing happiness and keeping a circle of really good friends is what she would consider a dream come true and luckily, she is on track. What does intervention mean to her? Simple: “start thinking about things that you take for granted or that you just don’t think about that you should think about.” Thanks, Vulkaner Ava!

Sophie Russek @sophierussek
A personal trainer from New York City, Sophie Russek is also a true fashion icon. Describing her style as flashy, retro, and a little fluid, what usually makes her stand out are her changes in hair looks. Hoping to have a bi-coastal career and life, traveling from the East Coast to the West Coast is definitely the main goal for her. Six months in New York City and six months in Los Angeles… truly a dream, right? When reflecting on what intervention means to her, “minimal intervention” was the first thing that popped into her mind. “I think it is something that we kind of talk about in terms of a lot of different parts of our culture: the environment, the way that we treat fabrics, keeping things sustainable,” Vulkaner Sophie Russek shared. “We want to get to the source of all the materials we use in our lives.” Welcome to the Vulkan Family, Sophie!
Shi Xianhang @shixianhang
Shi Xianhang is a young and aspiring fashion designer from China whose style reflects who he is. As he put it laughingly, “it’s all about American Streetstyle.” Thriving to design his own clothing brand, it’s no surprise that a truly amazing intervention would be meeting Raf Simons and making those dreams come true. Welcome to the Vulkan family Xi! Keep at it!

D’Mahdness Lavaughn @dmahdness
D’Mahdness went from living in Connecticut to moving to New York for five to end up here in the city of stars! Currently, he works for Tom of Finland where he does the marketing and social media and on the side, he has a TikTok! Definitely someone with a great sense of style, he described it plain and simple: “Practicality in fashion is very important to me. I want to be able to do jumps, flips. I want to be comfortable and still fashionable,” and of course, let’s not forget his signature accessory: his keys! One day, he hopes to run his own fashion house empire for everything from social media content to marketing (his favorite class in school) and more. “I want to create a safe space for queer people like myself to be able to do the same thing.” Seeing intervention as way of switching things up, it’s not secret that things can get a little stale and repetitive so it’s important to expand! “I love intervention. I think it’s a place for change and allows opportunity to blossom and grow.” Well said, Vulkaner, D’Mahdness! SPRING 2022

Dressing based on her mood of that particular day, it really boils down to just whatever she wants with a lean towards edgy and alternative. Dreaming and working hard every day to see her career fully takeoff, “ a great intervention would be the right person discovering me right now and helping my career get to the next level,” opened up Vulkaner, Baby Storme. “Or me just believing in myself and putting out the perfect song.” After thinking on it for a second, the answer was as clear as day: the best intervention would be for her to put out the perfect song that would launch her career. Bleezy @ihybleezy
Straight from Dallas, Texas, Bleezy has great style and an amazing voice. A vocal artist, making music is his whole world and he loves it. When you don’t care what people think of you, there is no surprise that your true self comes out and that’s where the fashion gets truly authentic. “I just wear whatever I want, that type of thing,” admitted Vulkaner, Bleezy. “I stand out by wearing whatever. I know I get looks just by people just when I walk around.” No matter what, he stays true to himself and his style! Hoping to become the next biggest artist/musician, we see a lot of intervention-- or CHANGE as he sees it-- coming his way… Stay tuned!

Dressing with the keyword “kid” in mind, Will channels his inner kid in all his looks: “I am all about personal expression so anything I can do to extenuate my personality through my visual look, that’s what I am going for.” Intervention to him is someone who steps in and helps guide us when we can’t guide ourselves. Never for their interest but solely ours. Keep at it Vulkaner, Will!

The voice of reason on set of “The Flight Attendant,” Deniz Akdeniz brings wit and talent on and off the screen! This experience allowed him to learn more about exploring the collaborative process. The writers gave the actors the freedom to explore and make each of their characters their own. That blend of fiction and non-fiction is beautiful as it makes the show and characters much more “real” and relatable! Still working on making his big dreams come true, there is no doubt we will be hearing more of Deniz Akdeniz!
not think about it. It was up to the cancellation/renewal gods. Then when I got the call, he sounded in a sour mood. He was like “everything you did in the first season was so good.. That opportunity was something that won’t go to waste.. etc..” I just felt like nope, we’re donezo. No more.. But then he was like “And after all the success of the first one - they are coming back for more, we got a Season 2!!” My heart dropped. It was an additional adrenaline rush to an already high tension moment.. Not sure I fully got over that.. still.
On set of "The Flight Attendant,” what do you believe you brought to the table different from others? What did you learn? Amazing hair.. Wait, that's Kaley. Super sharp wit... wait, that’s Zosia. I guess I was the voice of reason. Max is always the voice of reason. It was fun being the guy who has some common sense and ability to hack anything.. like anything. There are people who can do that in real life.. It’s awesome.
Share with us one of your craziest stories as an actor so far. Not sure if I have a “crazy” story about my career as an actor. I’ve been extremely fortunate that everything I’ve worked on has been just fun. Every day on set is a pinch me moment, where I can’t believe I’m involved in telling the stories that I always wanted to be a part of. I’ve been lucky enough to play roles throughout my life that allowed me to do some pretty amazing things like fight gargoyles and aliens, be a mer-man and a Disney prince. Now with Flight Attendant I’m part of a show that I genuinely really love watching. Instead of having to wait for episodes to drop, I’m in them and get to be part of the process to create the same experience I loved as a viewer for others.
This season I really learned to explore the collaborative process. Steve and Natalie and all the writers had created this amazing story and characters, but still really gave us the freedom to explore and make it our own. And with powerhouses like Kaley and Zosia, you have to always be on your toes and A game. So it honestly was a melting pot of creative energy and learning how to be able to add your own source of creativity and self to that. The second season comes out in a few weeks! What was your reaction when you heard the season would be renewed? A cruel, cruel trick was played on me by my long-time manager, Tom. I was expecting a call one way or another on the day. I was doing everything I could to just carry on and try
Who played a big part in helping make your dreams come true? My dreams are yet to come true. And when they do, it means I’ve got to dream a whole lot bigger.. But there are those who have gotten me to where I am now, like my family, my partner, my friends. I’ve been grateful to have so many people around me that give me nothing but support and love. And there are so many in between that have unlocked doors and windows and escape hatches

along the way. One that comes to mind is Stuart Beattie. Back as a young lad he took a chance on an unknown actor for a role in the film “Tomorrow, When the War Began”. It was a huge leap of faith on his behalf, one that unlocked everything for me. I went from never being on a film set to running through explosions in a huge action-adventure film. An experience that taught me so much and I wouldn’t be doing this today if it wasn’t for him and his belief. When people meet you, what is the first thing you want them to know about you? And the other way around? I’d really want people to know my name’s Deniz. And then usually find out what their name is in return.. Everything else through simple conversation generally reveals itself. In my experience, people are all more revealing than we think. As an actor, in what ways do you use your platform “for the greater good”? Being someone without Social Media, I feel I don’t really have a platform. Which is honestly a downside when wanting to be able to help make active change in my community. For all the negatives about Social Media, the big positive is that it can be used as a tool to inspire change. Personally, I’m always advocating for environmental awareness. I love the outdoors and spend as much time across the beautiful National Parks in the US. Unfortunately, humans are destroying what makes this planet not only beautiful but liveable. Just one example is recycling. As far as I understand only 9% of plastic is ever recycled. It ends up in our waterways, the ocean, bellies of sea life. As consumers, we need to demand change from the corporations that help produce and further the problem. And we need cities to make recycling more accessible for households.

Beauty, edge, and talent, it’s MAETA! Having recently released an EP that reflects her personal growth in the last year, it revolves around a toxic relationship she was in. Something we can all relate to, am I right? Becoming a musician became a goal of hers the day she saw Leona Lewis sing “Bleeding Love,” on top of the fact that music re4presenrs comfort to her… something she hopes to bring to her audience. Growing up in a creative household was monumental in her upbringing and she continues to channel her strength and creativity every day. Your latest EP reflects your personal growth in the last year. Can you tell us more about what it means to you? This EP is about a toxic relationship I was in that started when I moved to LA at 18. We went back and forth for years and it did nothing but torture me, but at least I got a good project out of it. What do you believe was a monumental intervention in your life that helped you get to where you are today? I would say watching Leona Lewis sing "Bleeding Love". I remember watching VH1 top 20 countdown when I was a little girl, and watching her music video made me want to be a singer one day just like her. Share with us what music makes you feel. What do you believe is music’s higher purpose? I think music is comfort. No matter what anyone or the world goes through, it’s something that brings us together and heals. That’s what I like about making music, it comforts me I’m the process then whoever relates when they listen

Growing up, you were raised by creative parents. Tell us more about that experience and how it let you to becoming an artist. I loved my childhood and household growing up. There was always music playing and art happening somewhere. My dad was a drummer and my mom was always painting something. It just gave me that open mindset to be creative. I Don’t think I’d be an artist if I was raised differently. Can you tell our readers your recipe to success and happiness? Sounds very corny, but enjoy the journey and not the destination (or whatever the quote is). I think if we were all where we wanted to be it’d get boring and unexciting. I love slowly reaching my goals and my stories along the way. What would be a “dream come true” A song with John Mayer
RILAN Photos by Ryan Jerome @ryan_jerome Writing by Alexandra Bonnet @alexbonnetwrites
Rilan brings the heat when it comes to his style and music. Never sugarcoating, he writes down his lyrics in the utmost honest and raw form. When stepping onto a stage, he can feel his heart pumping and blood flowing: the stage is his fantasy world. Having gone through a hard time in 2020 as most of the world did, he almost threw his hands up in the air but luckily, persevered. Creating the world his 13-year-old self dreamed of living in has been his purpose, Rilan is an inspiration to all. As a musician, what is one of the craziest musical concepts you have come up with? I think the craziest thing about my music is its honesty. I don’t hide from my emotions. I don’t sugarcoat. I write them down blatantly and unapologetically. “H8me2” and “iFeel Nothing” are the names of some of my upcoming records. The imagery is even more in your face. Believe me - the craziest is yet to come. What gets your heart pumping and blood flowing? Performing. I feel most at home on stage. It’s my fantasy world where everything is exactly how I wish it were in the real world, and sharing it with an audience makes it real.
Tell us about a time you “hit rock bottom” and how you climbed on out. Probably like everyone else, 2020 was horrible for me on all levels. I was in the worst management deal of my life and forced to hide myself and my music from the world. I was depressed, broke, and overall miserable. I almost quit. But my favorite thing to do is take darkness and turn it into something beautiful. All the music that that terrible time created was worth it. It always is if you ask me. When I say INTERVENTION, what is the first thing that comes to mind? First, I think of the meme of that man ugly crying during one of the episodes of the A&E show. Second, I think of the bravery and strength of all of my friends who overcame and continue to overcome their addictions. They continue to be one of my biggest sources of inspiration. I’m so proud of them. Do you believe you have found your purpose? Explain. Yes. My purpose is to create the world my 13-year-old self dreamed of living in, be it artistically, socially, politically, and beyond. I’m just doing it one song at a time.
Describe your musical and fashion style in a few words. I’m an undead gothic 2000s pop star sent from the past to change the future who loves Britney Spears as much as they love Nine Inch Nails. My style is a little goth, a little runway, and a lotta I don’t give a shit what’s cool or not.

DYLAN SINCLAIR Photo by Ryan Jerome @ryan_jerome Styling by Venetia + Juliana Writing by Alexandra Bonnet @alexbonnetwrites
Dylan Sinclair’s true language is music. Every moment connected to the power of music has played an important moment in his life. Staying present and letting go, he awaits the magic of life, God’s plans in store for him. Creating music for people to feel something, whatever that may be, Dylan brings heart, fire, and passion to the table. Walk us through your songwriting process. What inspires you? Writing songs is different every time but I like to write with substance so I usually draw from real life experiences and make an effort to channel all my emotions. I wanna say everything inspires me cause that really is how I try to look at life, but more specifically, I really admire characters whether real or fictional. I like seeing different walks of life interacting in different environments. It gives me perspective which in my opinion is the key to connecting with an audience. Growing up, what was what you would consider a “pivotal” moment in your life? Explain. Any moment where I connected with music was special cause it always felt like my language. In what ways have you witnessed “intervention” with your own eyes? What does it mean to you? I come from a praying family which I’m extremely grateful for. When I was 13, my parents got back together after an eight year long divorce and they both always tell me that it’s something that only God made happen. There are so many details to their testimony but I’ll tell you as their son, my parents didn’t look like they’d ever get back

together and now they’re happily married. Since I know that I have little to no control over what God has planned for my life, I always try to stay present and let go. If you could go back in time to visit a certain artist, who would it be and why? I’d wanna meet Bob Marley. I just think he’s a wise man with true values based on the way he wrote his music and went about his life. Would love to learn from a goat like him. Describe your music to us and what you hope it makes your audience feel. Each song makes me feel differently. Honestly, I don’t really care what you feel from my music as long as you feel something. How do you stand out from others? I feel like it’s inappropriate for me to answer that about myself. Depends on who you refer to when you refer to others but I could tell you I’m hardworking and I tend to see the beauty in everything in order for my music to feel beautiful.
MAAD Photos by Ryan Jerome @ryan_jerome Writing by Alexandra Bonnet @alexbonnetwrites Makeup by Brenda Ferrell @B-Ready Beauty
Born an artist, MAAD always knew she was destined to become an artist. Running through her veins, the melody and beats that she creates and hears inspire her to move forward, always. Hoping her audience can find an escape while listening to her music, the new project she worked on with her partner, Raleigh, was created during quarantine and represents the idea of being transported out of reality and away from the worries. We can’t wait to see what else MAAD has in store for us! Describe to us a moment in your life which set you on your path as an artist. I came out of the womb this way! I’ve always known I was destined to be on this path as an artist. I was and am blessed to have parents that also saw something special in me and allowed me to be my creative, quirky self. They enrolled me in Dance Theatre of Harlem and Harlem School of the arts at the age of 4, so I’ve always been surrounded by artistic energy. What does music mean to you? Music literally runs through my veins. There’s something special about being able to form an idea from thin air. Hearing a song come to life is such a beautiful process and one I truly enjoy. In what ways do you hope your music affects your audience? My hopes for my listeners is for them to just find an escape, a reason to say fuck it to the things that may be bothering them and just have a good time. The new project I worked on with my partner- Raleigh -was created during quarantine. You can feel that need to have fun and desired an escape from reality. I would have never imagined forming a duo but RM47 but it felt so easy to explore new sounds and approach songs with
a fresh take. I hope my audience feels like they took a trip around the world when they hear it. Share with us a time when it felt as though you were encountering a “divine intervention.” Explain. I feel this way every day. Just do be able to wake up and do the things I love proves that there’s something larger than me leading the way. I’ve been heavy into meditating lately as well; my daily affirmation is “opportunities flow to me with ease” and they do just that. You truly have to believe that what you’re doing has a purpose and that you can’t be stopped.
Do you believe you have found your purpose in life? Explain. Absolutely. I’ve had to learn the importance of stepping back and appreciating the journey. I’ve come a long was from dreaming about performing for huge audiences to actually being blessed enough to have accomplished some of those dreams. For me, I’m still working towards this bigger picture. I’ll know once I’m there but can tell you I’m much closer than I was the day before.
Who do you look up to in the music world? In your life? I’m truly inspired by those around me. I’m so grateful to have friends I can learn from, lean on and create with. My partner, Raleigh, is someone that I look up to as wellhis work ethic is different. When you can be around someone that has tunnel vision like that you can’t help yourself from wanting to match that drive. If you could be any artist for a week, who would you pick and why? Honestly, Diana Ross.. I would have loved to experience her Central Park performance from her point her point of view. The looks, the crowd, the energy, the preparation..that moment was truly iconic.

ANALESA FISHER Photo by Ryan Jerome @ryan_jerome Writing by Alexandra Bonnet @alexbonnetwrites
x
You may recognize Analesa Fisher from their role in “Metal Lords,” a project through which they discovered they were a heavy metal fan! Having figured out that in acting, it’s all about going back to the basics, figuring out what makes that character tick, what makes them human… Acting is not the only love in Analesa’s life! “I am, borderline aggressively, dedicated to shark conservation,” they shared wholeheartedly, explaining just how vital it is to save the sharks! Keep reading on and discover more about Analaesa Fisher and their beautiful spirit! On set, what was one of the most exhilarating experiences you encountered? I didn't think I was a heavy metal fan until we started filming “Metal Lords.” I spent a long time in quarantine reading books and researching the history of heavy metal, that by the time we got around to filming that amazing Battle of the Bands scene, I was absolutely hooked. Some of the research I found so interesting about metal music is that it's known to decrease cortisol levels in the body, which is the chemical that's produced from stress. More so, when you're a part of making metal music, it's found to decrease it by another 60%. Aside from this, what I'm meaning to get to is, getting to play Kevin's drums on set of the Battle of the Bands stage and headbanging along to “Machinery of Torment” for even 10 seconds when we weren't filming was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. And yes, I'm saving up for my own drum set as we speak. As an actor, what are the most fundamental rules when taking on tricky characters? I think, fundamentally, the smartest thing we can do for actors is to always, always,
75
always, go back to the basics. Who is this person, what makes them tick, what makes them human (even if they aren't). Characters, fictional or not, are still people at the end of the day. Just like how you and I have elements of truth, things that make us tick, things that set us off, tangible goals in life... they do too. Don't look at it like a tricky character, look at it first like a real person and build from there. Share with us something you are very passionate about and why. I am, borderline aggressively, dedicated to shark conservation. People see sharks as these awful, pesky creatures that are better off not in our oceans because of how "dangerous" they are. The harsh reality is, other than being blind puppies of the sea, sharks cause 0-2 deaths on average every single year. Whereas humans kill upwards of 100 million sharks every single year. It’s not only the mass extinction of these incredibly misunderstood creatures that’s the problem, but the problem is also how that affects the ecosystem and food chain of our oceans. If sharks die off, the rest of the food chain will completely crumble, which will cause smaller predators to increase in numbers, which will cause a mass diminishing of the world’s phytoplankton population. Phytoplankton generate more than 85% of the oxygen we breathe and sequester more than four times the amount of carbon dioxide from our air as the Amazon rainforest! So, more phytoplankton in our oceans means less carbon in our air. If we don’t stop the noise population from fishing boats, the horrific murders of sharks across the globe, and the pollution of our oceans within the next few years, our oceans coral reef beds are going to die off, which is going to make the ocean unable to sequester carbon dioxide from our air. Which – in turn – would mean
THE INTERVENTION ISSUE
we could all suffocate and die on our own planet. Save the sharks, save the oceans, save the planet! I told you, bordering on aggressive. Do you believe you have found your purpose in life? Explain. In an industry like this one, it's next to impossible to trust that it'll all just work out if it's meant to be. To put everything into the universe and hope you're on the right path. The only thing that I know is, I've tried to find something else that makes me happy, and nothing has even come close. My best advice is, if you can find a career that makes you long for Monday mornings just so you can look forward to a whole five days of glorious opportunity and the chance for even more work, a career that makes you absolutely dread Friday evenings because it means everything's shutting off for a few days... then I think you've found what you're supposed to do. If you could embody anyone for a day, who would it be and why? Really any “meat suit” that doesn't have Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and a slew of food allergies would be truly exhilarating to embody for a day. That being said, if I could really choose anyone, I think I'd have to say Gwen Stacy from the Spider-verse. For a similar reason that she owns a sick drum set, doesn't care what anyone thinks, has superpowers, and is one of the most competent spiders in the multiverse. Truly if I were to switch career paths, crime fighting Spider-Gwen would be at the top of my list.
THOM BRIDGES Photos by Ryan Jerome @ryan_jerome Writing by Alexandra Bonnet @alexbonnetwrites Grooming by Brenda Ferrell @B-Ready Beauty
Truly a jack of all trades in the music industry, Thom Bridges is the center where all music genres meet. Always jumping through sounds as he creates, experimentation is his middle name! Having had the chance to work with a variety of talented artists, he is able to take on new challenges and learn more about himself, his music, and others’. Being international, Thom is able to gain more knowledge and perspectives as he encounters people from all around the world. Truly an inspiration, we can’t wait to see where he goes next! You truly are a jack of all trades in the music industry. Tell us more about who you are and what you believe makes you stand out? I grew up listening to a lot of different music. I started my career as an engineer which taught me to work with various artists in different genres and adapt quickly. I think what defines my sound is the combination of genres. I've always been jumping in between sounds while I'm creating.. One day I'd make a ballad the next day a latin or trap/urban song. I think by experimenting with this and being open to creating any style of music your creative ideas expand and you come with sounds and songs that are unique and fresh. You have collaborated with amazing people! Who would you say were your top 3 most inspirational ones and why? Thirty Seconds To Mars, David Guetta and Sofia Reyes. With all 3 artists it comes back to the different genres again... it inspires me when I feel challenged. All of these artists have challenged me to step out of my comfort zone in creating songs. With Sofia for example, I was forced to discover a whole different world of music: Regional Mexican, Bachata, Cumbia. These are genres that I
had never worked in before that are also culturally so different. In order for me to create something in these genres that felt real I had to not only dive into the sound but also the culture of this music. That is what really inspires me because it expands the way you see songwriting and production. Picture this: you have 2 hours to put a song together for THE opportunity of your lifetime. How do you go about creating the perfect song? For me creating music is all about the vibe with the artist. There has to be some sort of connection in order to create the best possible song. As a producer you want the artist to feel as comfortable as possible so to get back to the question. I'd probably spend an hour building that comfort and an hour of actually creating the song. When the vibe is right the song will write itself.
What do you hope to accomplish as an artist? I hope to create songs that are timeless and will keep inspiring people for many years. I already feel like I accomplished so much by the fact that I do what I love with the people that I love working with. What would be an intervention you dream of to take yourself to the next level? To work with artists like Rosalia, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Rick Rubin and Pharrell would be a dream come true.
In what ways does being International play a role in your perspective on music? the world? It plays a huge role for me. The more I travel and meet people from all over the world, the more inspired I feel. This comes back again to combining different genres and sounds from all over the world. How do you feel when you release a new song? For me it's amazing to see how people resonate with the songs I create. I love to see people do covers or dance to my songs and see their interpretation of them. I do have to force myself sometimes to enjoy the release itself because by the time a song comes out, I'm usually already with my head in the next 5 songs.

Absolutely loved meeting artist, Awgust, recently on a Vulkan Fever shoot. His energy intoxicating, his smile blinding, and his love warm, this artist is truly someone you want to check out. Love means everything to him, most of his music is about missing his loved ones throughout the pandemic. Having chased this dream of making music for a long time, Awgust welcomes the opportunities headed his way with open arms. I’ll let you guys keep reading on to discover more about him…
What would be the biggest takeaway you hope your audience gets from the upcoming debut album? In a nutshell, I hope the listener gets some catharsis and a newfound obsession with me.
Share with us what making music means to you and how you hope to make your audience feel. Making music means a lot to me. I’ve chased this dream for so long now that I’d probably have an identity crisis without it. At the same time, the process of writing this album helped me gain a sense of self. As cliche as this may sound, it was like therapy because it challenged me to be honest with myself during a really tough time, and having that mirror pointed back gave me perspective. So in a way making music has been incredibly liberating. Hopefully, a real piece of me transmits to the audience and they get a fatal attraction that lets me rip open their heart and tape it back together.
Tell us a story about a time you were faced with a challenge and how you overcame it. I felt anxiety at a party so I drank tequila. What does love mean to you? Everything.
Describe to us a collaboration that changed your life. Explain. I’d say co-writing RIP for Sofia Reyes. The song's success really opened some doors for me as an artist.
Tell us more about your upcoming releases. What inspired you? I’ll be releasing my debut album spread out in a couple of segments. The first song is called Boys Don’t Cry, which is also the title for side A of the album. Side B comes out after. The whole body of work is basically an ode to the worst, yet best year of my life. During that time I had just signed the record deal of my dreams while at the same time beginning to get so well acquainted with depression. I think that’s the kiss and slap I wanted to communicate.

There is no doubt that modeling takes courage and the will to step out of your comfort zone…which is exactly what Elia Berthold was drawn to. Also using this path as a way to propel himself toward a musical career, he takes in all the lessons life has to offer! Channeling his power to influence positive change in this world, Elia finds meaning and purpose in everything he does! What does beauty mean to you? To me, the word “beauty” stands for physical health, mental health, happiness, gratitude, and appreciation. People who manage to live a healthy life are beautiful. Why were you attracted to a modeling career? I used modeling as an excuse to push myself to get in the best shape I could be and to prepare myself for a future as a musician.
