STIHL PRO Range A MUCH BETTER WAY TO WORK
With the ever-increasing fuel price top-of-mind, a switch to STIHL Lithiumion PRO cordless Range machines makes good sense. There’s no need to buy or store fuel, or make sure that teams have enough fuel to work all day, and no downtime for refuelling. STIHL Lithium-ion PRO cordless Range machines are quiet and emissionfree, so there’s no limitation on when or where you are able to work. Sound levels for STIHL PRO Range models are so low that no ear protection is required, making these tools the number one choice when working in noise-sensitive areas such as lifestyle estates, urban gardens, schools and parks, office parks, hospitals, care centres, and retail hubs. The STIHL Lithium-ion PRO Range features reliable, robust models that are suitable for all-day, every-day operation with all the challenges of professional landscaping applications. They have a performance that is equal to petrol-powered products, with a wide choice of essential products for landscapers that includes cordless chainsaws, telescopic pole pruners, brushcutters, blowers, hedge-trimmers and lawnmowers. STIHL PRO Range tools are powered by STIHL’s innovative Lithium-ion battery technology, ensuring that the batteries for these machines don’t lose power as they begin to run down. Four LED lights keep users informed about the charge status of the battery, so you are never caught unaware. There is the added convenience of these batteries being interchangeable between all PRO products, and they have a long running time and short charging time. Using the correct Lithium-ion batteries helps you to get the most out of your STIHL cordless power tools, and STIHL has a wide range of batteries with differing capacities available; the backpack batteries have an even larger capacity for longer running times. STIHL is proud to introduce the new AP 500 S battery, which makes the switch to cordless even more exciting. This on-board battery is the most powerful AP battery from STIHL, featuring power laminate technology which means it has double the number of charging cycles of a typical STIHL AP system battery with cylindrical cells, and the power output has been significantly increased compared to the AP 300 S battery. The STIHL AP 500 S battery can be integrated into the STIHL connected fleet management system for complete insight into the actual operating time of machines for enhanced control over costs and operational performance. Another cost-effective feature of this range is that these models have brushless motors that require minimal servicing. In addition, many tools in the PRO Cordless Range can be used in wet weather for even less downtime. As always with STIHL, operator-comfort and safety are paramount. STIHL PRO Range tools are easy to start and simple to operate, and are lightweight and ergonomic, which helps to reduce operator fatigue during extended use. Economical to operate, reliable and robust, and powerful enough for landscaping professionals. Work smarter, with the STIHL Lithium-ion PRO Range. STIHL www.stihl.co.za @stihlsa

Q: What does it mean to have so many projects year-on-year, garner rave reviews at the SALI Awards of Excellence? It makes all the blood, sweat and tears that go in to creating the gardens, well worth it! It motivates us to continue presenting our best, and raising the bar.
Q: When you entered House Keller, House Du Preez and House Du Plessis, did you anticipate they would perform so well, winning awards, a trophy and the coveted SALI Shield of Excellence? We had a feeling that we would win the Mayford Trophy for 'Best Use of Colour in a Landscape,' as for all the other trophies, we didn’t have a clue! We have been working at winning the Shield for 16 years. After not being able to have an event for 2 years, I (Graham von Hoesslin) was very excited to be able to attend this event in person, and to see everyone again, but, Murphy's Law... I came down with COVID-19 and could not attend. My right hand, Bridget Robertson, and partner in the business, my father, Richard von Hoesslin, were there to receive the awards on behalf of the business. It was such an incredible feeling when all the updates started coming in via WhatsApp, it took a couple of days for the realisation to really sink in. We congratulated our incredible teams with a braai and mini award service, for which they were very grateful and the 'awards high' feeling, is still echoing through the office. GVH LANDSCAPES
Q: What about House Keller makes it so unique? The client’s brief was colour, colour and more colour, with textures and indigenous planting. We were given complete artistic freedom on this job. Graham’s plant knowledge and knowledge of the area's microclimate

is what stood this job in good stead. It took a lot of attention to detail and sourcing of plant material from a number of different suppliers across the country.
Q: What was the most rewarding element of this project? Seeing the SALI National Judge, Sbu Dladla, walk into the garden and all he could say was ‘WOW’ in complete awe! As well as the client’s absolute joy that she gets out of her beautiful garden.
Q: We see you do a lot of rooftop gardens and urban greening – tell us a little more about this element as a growing trend for homeowners? People are wanting to break away from the concrete jungles of the cities and incorporate the landscape as a major element into the living space and blending with the natural environment. Bringing the natural environment and ecosystem as an integral part of the, often ‘harsh,' man-made structures has become a key factor in softening the environment and bringing nature to your doorstep.
Q: Tell us a little about your team? How many members work on your projects, and do you design and install most of your projects? We have 4 teams, and 3 maintenance teams of 5 staff -with each team having a dedicated manager! These 3 maintenance teams dedicate their days to looking after our 90 maintenance gardens. Our landscaping team is made up of 20 staff with 2 managers. The landscaping teams are split into smaller teams, each with their own skillset. We have a dedicated pruning team, irrigation installation team, hard landscaping team and planting team – each team is trained in their specific skillset. In total, we have 50 employees. Operations Manager, Driaan Terblanche, manages the daily operational running of the business. Our financial team based in Franschhoek consists of my father, Richard von Hoesslin, and our Bookkeeper, Shirley Sampson. We have a General Manager, Bridget Robertson, she is a qualified Horticulturist and oversees the running of the maintenance department, general administration and financial tasks, putting our designs into AutoCAD, client liaising, etc. and then, myself, Graham, the head landscaper and the artist behind our beautiful gardens. We design and install 99.9% of our projects.
Q: What’s on top tool you can’t live without? My phone, a pair of Felco secateurs and my tree saw!

SO MUCH MOWER...
Since 1969, The Grasshopper Company has focused on manufacturing a complete line of zero-turn riding mowers, PowerVac™ Collection Systems, and turf-renovation and grounds maintenance equipment that are highly productive, supremely comfortable and easy to maintain.
in a zero-turn mower in 1983, and the company continues to perfect diesel-powered mowing equipment with engines that are emissions-compliant, save fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 20 percent compared to gasoline and propane mowers. Every Grasshopper product is designed, engineered, fabricated and assembled at the company’s headquarters in Moundridge, Kansas, USA, and Grasshopper is committed to lean and clean manufacturing practices that limit raw material use and reduce impact to the environment. These commitments have been recognized by local and regional authorities such as the Wichita chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
These fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly products provide easy operation, versatility and timesaving performance – zeroturn-maneuvering productivity solutions for turf care professionals, government entities and large-acreage estates. A division of Moridge Manufacturing, Grasshopper is an industry-leading manufacturer of commercial zero-turn mowers. In the 1960s, no “off-the-shelf” components were available for developing the first Grasshopper mowers. Company engineers had to design and fabricate components from scratch – testing, re-testing and refining – and integration of emerging technologies has been instrumental to the precision manufacturing required to improve product performance, quality and durability.
In 2020, Grasshopper was honored by the U.S. Department of Commerce with the prestigious “E” Award for sustained increases in export sales over a four-year period. In fact, nearly one of every 10 Grasshopper mowers manufactured is destined for an international market. Grasshopper products can be found in more than 40 countries worldwide, including the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
That spirit of innovation and dedication to technological advancement continues today, with the company employing state-of-the-art laser cutting and robotics processes operated by a skilled and dedicated workforce in Kansas, the heartland of the United States.
Grasshopper mowers and equipment are used by turf care professionals, government entities and discerning estate owners around the world. Grasshopper has been the mower of choice for the grounds maintenance crews at The White House in Washington, D.C., since 2003, and at the world-famous Burghley House park near Stamford, England, since 2015.
Among major firsts for the zero-turn mower industry, Grasshopper is the originator of dual swing-away control levers for mowers as well as the PowerFold® Electric Deck Lift and Height Adjustment. PowerFold raises the out-front cutting deck at the touch of a switch and provides infinitely variable, on-the-go cutting height adjustment; it is a standard feature on all FrontMount™ Grasshopper mowers.
In South Africa, Grasshopper mowers are proudly imported by Tandem Lawncare Equipment in Durban and found at several participating retailers nationwide.

TAKE YOUR PLACE
South African Landscapers Institute 2022 Awards of Excellence
Gathering in person has never been more exciting than at this years’ SALI Awards of Excellence! The South African Green Industries Council Convention was a resounding success and it’s where we set the scene for the annual SALI Awards of Excellence, spotlighting and awarding the landscape designers and contractors making waves within the industry. The venue: the picturesque Champagne Sports Resort in the Drakensberg which has provided the perfect backdrop to an inspiring awards season. 23
/ SALI AWARDS /
THE FOREWORD ANNEMARIE VAN DER WESTHUIZEN, Chairman of SAGIC
It seems to be almost surreal to think that we already planned a SAGIC Convention halfway through 2022. If we look over our shoulder at the events of the past three years, we are delighted that the SALI, SANA, and SAGIC Awards Ceremony can be held in person again. There is, of course, a time and place for online and virtual prize-giving ceremonies, but we believe that looking someone in the eyes while handing over their certificate or trophy is far more exciting and rewarding for both the recipients and judges alike. Every year, this event is the biggest opportunity for SALI members to showcase their hard work. Seeing their names in print is probably something many companies could only dream of when starting out! To top it all off, who doesn't enjoy being recognised for a job well done? Although COVID-19 cases come and go in waves, we can all agree that life is slowly but surely starting to return to normal. We will always remember the massive impact this pandemic had on our lives, and its footprint will remain in our memory for many years to come. Thankfully, these unprecedented times couldn't curb the enthusiasm and growth of the landscape industry: the judges were able to visit sites and cast their votes, honouring the accomplishment of each new project. On behalf of the recipients, thank you to everyone involved in the huge task of compiling the details. We are thrilled that we will at last be able to see the smiling and proud faces of the recipients in real life!
Congratulations to every person and company who received an award. You have all done an amazing job.

A FOREWORD BY GAFLEY CARELSE Despite the challenges faced by some of our members due to the current economic environment, we are thrilled by the level of participation at this year's Awards of Excellence. Meeting in person has been a fantastic reprise to the ceremonies of years gone by, and it has truly been an event welcomed by all involved. This year, we received a total of 116 entries over the 7 awards categories with, interestingly, the most significant increase being seen in the Landscape and Turf Maintenance category. Once again, SALI members delivered an exceptionally high standard of work (as commended by the judges), and we were pleased to see new entrants in all regions receiving silver and gold awards.
SBU DLADLA
Competition for the trophy winners was tight, which means the calibre of portfolios with winners in two of the trophy categories had to be split between two recipients. The SALI National Executive Committee would like to express their sincere gratitude to our National Judge, Sbu Dladla, and his team of regional judges for their exceptional work and precious time devoted during the SALI Awards of Excellence.
GAFLEY CARELSE
FOREWORD BY SBU DLADLA Who Are We? When someone asks you who you are, your response would probably be your first name and surname. Perhaps even your nickname or other special quirks relating to what you prefer to be called. For example, I would say: 'My name is Sbu Dladla. I'm the coolest Zulu guy in the green industry.' However, the question, 'Who are you?' is often misunderstood, which is why it is almost always followed by, "What do you do?' Now that is the question that seeks to discover our footprint on this earth and in this lifetime. It defines us and encapsulates our true character. In landscaping, what we do is embedded in the details of our maintenance programmes, construction schedule and materials, designs, and client relations. With every project we do, we are given an opportunity to express ourselves in a way that many can look at and say: 'I know who did that!' It is the greatest pleasure and honour to travel throughout the country to see everyone's work and to meet all of you in person. Let us continue to leave ourselves on every square metre we touch for generations to come.
As always, ngiyabonga kakhulu! 25

THE SALI CHAIRPERSON'S DISCRETIONARY AWARD THE 2022 SALI CHAIRPERSON'S DISCRETIONARY AWARD GOES TO DR JONATHAN FOLEY This award is intended to recognise and reward the individuals who have excelled and have made significant contributions to the landscaping industry. The nomination for this year’s recipient was unanimously approved by our National Executive Committee and we would like to share a brief history... Dr Jonathan Foley qualified as a horticulturist in 1983, graduating from Natal Technikon (now known as the Durban University of Technology). He worked as a senior horticulturist with the former Natal Provincial Administration, as well as in private enterprise designing and creating corporate, institutional, and private sector landscapes. Since joining DUT as a lecturer in 1995, Dr Jonathan Foley served a range of roles, eventually heading up the horticulture department from the year 2000 to 2006 and developing the School of Horticulture programme, which has been running successfully at DUT for the last 15 years. The programme is a structured semester practical course, and Dr Foley coordinates the experiential learning component by liaising with the local landscaping and nursery industry in the professional placement of students for their final semester. His research interests include landscape design and biodiversity and he gets to transfer his extensive knowledge to students by working as a senior lecturer teaching undergraduate programmes in Sustainable Horticulture and Landscaping, the School of Horticulture, and the Work Integrated Learning programme for third years. Dr Foley’s passion is clearly demonstrative, having developed the ‘Green the Nation’ programme for SANBI, which trains community leaders to champion projects throughout South Africa. Furthermore, he is an active member of the landscaping industry, acting as a provincial judge for the annual SALI Awards of Excellence for the past three years and currently serving on the SALI KwaZulu-Natal Executive Committee for training and education. In terms of research, Jonathan has contributed to the National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA) determining the economic value of African medicinal plants.

THE SALI HONORARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP IS AWARDED TO KEN BURGESS Burgess Landscapes has been a long-time member of SALI KZN, enjoying plenty of prestige and renown in the industry. Therefore, it gives us great pleasure to bestow the SALI Honorary Life Membership award upon Mr Ken Burgess. SALI acknowledges the contributions made by individuals who have served our organisation, its interest, and the industry at large, and we would like to celebrate one such individual. Ken Burgess was introduced to the nursery industry in 1973 when he was approached to assist with running his family's business, Burgess Florist and Nurserymen. For 15 years, Ken Burgess managed the nursery in Westville, where he was responsible for both the production and sales. It was during that time that Ken Burgess started a landscaping department, which eventually grew into one of the largest in KwaZulu-Natal, enabling him to leave the family business to start Burgess Landscapes. Today, this venture is a SALI award-winning business operating in South Africa, Angola, and Mauritius. Ken Burgess is one of the founding members of the South African Landscapers Institute and has been involved with SALI from 1984 to 2018. He was SALI National Chairman in 1989 and 1990, and has served SALI and the green industry at large with commitment and dedication, even beyond the call of duty, for 32 years.

RESIDENTIAL BIODIVERSITY GARDEN Completed: 2022 Location: Port Alfred, Eastern Cape This is a residential garden within Settlers Park Retirement Village, Port Alfred, Eastern Cape. The garden was completed in January 2022 and is continually maintained, and all work related to this garden was done by Kenton Garden Services. The brief The client gave carte blanche with regard to the design and implementation of the project. He suggested that Kenton Garden Services do something more modern and ‘out of the box’, steering away from traditional gardening practices. He is a keen photographer and requested that the garden should attract as many local bird and wildlife species as possible. He wanted a lot of colour and variety, and wanted to keep the existing plants and trees in the garden, which are mostly exotic. With regard to planting, he indicated that he loves a theme of Aloes and indigenous grasses, and he also loves Bromeliads and Jasmine.

JUDGES' COMMENTS ‘A total response to the harsh water restrictions in Port Alfred which dictated that no watering of gardens should be done at the time this was constructed. A game of two halves is what this garden personifies. The front yard, which is exposed to the public, is a replica of the wild with no formal lines, but a good mixture of plants and rock. The odd appearances of Osteospermum and silver Gazanias offer colour and bind the garden together. An element of humanity is emphasised by the creeping Clivia against the wall, trained with wire to add character and a focal point. As one turns the corner, there is a celebration of design elements where texture in the gravel pathway is broken by the smoothness of the lintel, placed perfectly to bring interest to the space. It has a great selection of plants that attract birds into the garden. During the time we were there, there were about 7 different species that visited us! The water feature is placed at the most perfect spot to be enjoyed from all angles of the backyard especially the patio, which also offers water to the birds that visit the tree above it. This project turned a small space into ‘big heaven.' The client, Mr. Rob, could not stop smiling and expressing how much he enjoys his garden. A job well done.’

Site challenges The drought and no available water proved to be the greatest challenge to building this garden. In addition, the slopes in the front and back garden needed careful consideration while the flow and accessibility of various garden areas also had to be improved. As there is a set way of gardening within the park, some residents were not receptive to a wild and more natural way of gardening, which created issues with the management. Lastly, merging existing exotic plants with an indigenous plant palette also served as a test on this particular site. Design approach The design's primary goal was to create a biodiversity hotspot within the park where wildlife from the surrounding areas can freely nest and feed in the garden. In addition to the wildlife conservation aspect, the aim was to create a low-maintenance garden with seasonal interest, surprise, and change. Since the client travels often, the goal was also to create a 'lock-up-and-go' type of garden that can look after itself. Moreover, the view of the front door was obstructed by overgrown plants. Therefore, the aim was to create a natural garden with a more inviting entrance that draws you in — almost as if the surrounding bush was 'cut-and-pasted' into a traditional garden environment. Kenton Garden Services mowed the muncipal verge around the retirement village, relocating plants to the garden that would otherwise have been cut down. Since the beauty and diversity of the natural plants of the Eastern Cape are not well represented within the horticultural industry, the aim was to showcase some of the wild and overlooked species and varieties, and to accommodate local wildlife. The lines of the design radiate towards the front door, visually drawing the eye in. Lastly, steps were built to create more interest, focus, and functionality in the entrance area, while the pathway was built to flow towards the back garden. Sustainability of design The longevity of the design lies within the plant selection. Pioneer species will reseed and the landscape will adapt as the succession plants mature and bulbs multiply. This is a natural, uncontrolled method of gardening that will ensure continual change and evolution within the landscape.
Rehabilitation of natural elements The original garden was manicured and planted with none of the old growth bush remaining. Local plants form the backbone of this garden. The plant species collection will continually be expanded as this garden serves as a mini nature reserve for this area. Most indigenous bulbs and plants found growing within the lawns of Settlers Park and the municipal verge lawns will be safely relocated here. Continual efforts are made to obtain a ‘search and rescue’ permit for the area surrounding the park as road development and maintenance happens without any regard to the local plant ecology. Many natural species seed within the park due to seeds carried by birds. These plants are left to grow where they are in order to increase natural biodiversity and protect endemic plant genetics. Construction and suitability of materials All of the hard materials for the landscaping were obtained within a 5km radius of the park. Four paver slabs for stairs were purchased in Port Elizabeth. Plants were obtained from various sources and wholesale nurseries such as Elands Nursery in Uitenhage, Kraaibosch Wholesale Nursery in George, Cherrywood Nursery in Kenton-on-Sea, and Etna Farm in East London. Other sources were self-propagated plants, search and rescue plants, and donations from other residents. All indigenous plants were left to self-seed and seed heads were not removed during maintenance. The client had a chipping machine. All garden refuse was, and will continue to be, recycled into the garden, which is the key to the survival and initial establishment of the garden. The soil was not dug over during the planting and soil preparation stage, and the compost and soil were layered so as not to break up the soil structure or micro-organism colonies that promote nutrient absorption.

Biodegradable cardboard, was used to line planting holes of larger shrubs to retain moisture. Rocks, stone and flint were hand-selected from the local quarry. The back garden had a deadzone slope, which was addressed by creating stone steps towards the lower level. The area needed screening from the neighbours. The park management requested that we allow access for residents and security staff within the garden. The design of the lawn is more structured in comparison to tie in with the house, and the focal point of the water feature draws your eye towards the view of the bush beyond.

Water conservation It is prohibited to water gardens within the park with either rain or municipal water. The client makes use of hand-collected greywater whenever possible. Water tanks on premises are for residential use, but we have used some of the tank water to discreetly water some plants as we have had only two consecutive days of adequate rain after the garden was established. The highest rainfall for Port Alfred is in February, but we have received almost none this year. Overflow from the three 5000 litre water tanks have been directed into the garden at two points: one in the lower garden, and another around the water tank area. Phasing and execution The implementation was drawn out over a four-month period, which could have been completed in two weeks with a large team. Fortunately, the client was very patient and granted freedom and grace to complete the project with no time constraints.

JUDGES' COMMENTS 'Perhaps many would want to know why two winners were selected, but the answer is simple: Countryline’s project observes all the necessities of a maintenance project and takes it to another level with precision. The project has no faults. While Turfworx’s Thesen Island was almost an impossible task, the contractor took a disaster and turned it into an opportunity. With little to no budget, the contractor established a nursery on site at no extra cost to the client. The site is gigantic, but even in its grand size, the gardens look like a team of a 1000 people are maintaining it. This project personifies hard work, determination, skill, and best maintenance practices. Good work must be recognised and there was no separating these two magnificent projects.’
OXGLEN PRECINCT Size: 22 000 m² Completed: 2017 Location: Rosebank, Johannesburg Strategically situated at the major intersection of Oxford and Glenhove Roads, OxGlen Precinct offers high visibility to passing traffic. Developed by Barrow Properties and completed in August 2017, the precinct is fast becoming a high-profile office and lifestyle node in Johannesburg’s Rosebank CBD. Located on the outer perimeter of the CBD, and 300m from the Rosebank Gautrain Station, the precinct allows easy access to and from the main arterial and motorways. The precinct is characterised by immaculately landscaped gardens and water features, and includes a lifestyle section consisting of restaurants, outdoor seating areas, meeting facilities and galleries, which are all set around a magnificant oak tree. Designed by LYT Architecture, OxGlen is a sectional title commercial office development, creating the opportunity for the ownership of office space in a triple A-grade building. The main occupants are Coca-Cola, whose offices occupy ± 8 000 m². Other occupants include Coronation, Mac Consulting, Bollo Attorneys, The Business Exchange, Omega Capital, Barker Insurance, and Sappi.

The site The site consists of three adjoining properties: one on the bordering Houghton Estate and two in Melrose Estate. The straddling of suburbs dictated the need for two buildings with two addresses sharing one notarial tied basement. A trigonometrical beacon of historical significance was found whilst clearing the site. Upon investigating, it was found that the beacon was the original marker at the intersection that divided three historical farms; Braamfontein, Klipfontein, and Syferfontein. spoke mounted through the centre, located in the middle of what is now Oxford Road, had been moved and replaced with a concrete bollard due to the construction of Oxford Road. Barrow Properties, endeavoured to reinstate and celebrate this piece of Johannesburg’s history on the doorstep of this development. The building OxGlen Precinct is a 22 000m² office development. There are two large buildings, one consisting of 6 stories of office space and the second being a 5 storey building. A classic courtyard typology often used by the developer consists of two racetrack-type front doors and all amenities needed to function alone. However, they do all benefit from the building’s spaces and amenities as a collective - such as the ground floor coffee shop. Design language The architectural language of the buildings is to externally engage the surroundings and landmark corner of Oxford and Glenhove roads and the visibility of the site, reacting to site limitations such as the Gautrain servitude in a very beneficial way. This provided the opportunity for the weaving of the language of a multi-faceted gem-like drama. Countering this was the intent to draw the human scale through transitional interior spaces into courtyard, inwardengaging, serene spaces. Unlike a single tenanted commercial building with a single identity for the user, the buildings act as the threshold to multiple owned spaces; all of which needed to benefit from the architectural language as an identifying factor. Perched on an apex in the topography, this provided the opportunity for the users’ internal environments to engage visually with the vast and expansive panoramic views reaching to the edges of the Johannesburg landscape. There was a cognitive decision to engage with the public or pedestrians thus an unfenced, generously wide landscaped area belonging to the site is made available to the public. Design features The Western glazed façade of the building is inclined and encroaches over the servitude. The building seems to loom over one, creating a composition unique to this site. The corner of the building peels away to create a reinforced perspective view. The ground rises toward the entrance and the façade angles down towards the same place, seemingly creating ‘a vanishing point’, which acts as a transition into the interior space. The same transition is experienced from the interior spaces looking out. The cranked northern façade, featuring contrasting natural stone and glazed boxes, adds dynamism to this edge. The geometry of both buildings differs but is unified as a compound through the utilisation of similar materials and design language. The sum of the parts of this development act as a composition in the landscape, unifying both inward looking and outward looking environments that are experienced visually and experientially by the human scale.

Landscape maintenance OxGlen Precinct essentially consists of three different projects that were constructed at different times but are interlinking; Breeze Court, OxGlen Phase 1, and OxGlen Phase 2. The client, Barrow Property Group, approached Countryline to design and construct Phase 1, while Breeze Court and Phase 2 were both designed by Daniel Rebel Landscape Architects. Unfortunately, some of the challenges faced on-site at the OxGlen Precinct occurred towards the end of 2021. There was plenty of construction work that occurred during the second phase of the project to get the building ready for its new tenant. As a result, the landscaping suffered considerable damage. Countryline did not receive any budget to rectify these damages, but worked dilligently to assist with the recovery of the existing plants and to implement solutions like the propagation of cuttings to reconstruct and rejuvenate the landscape up to its original standard. Additionally, the irrigation settings at Breeze Court have also been an ongoing challenge as the planting areas were in semi-indoor conditions. Part of Countryline's solution was to ensure the correct balance between over- and underwatering.

THESEN ISLAND HOA Size: 900 000 m² Start date: 2017 - Present Location: Knysna, Western Cape Thesen Island is a Marina Estate in Knysna, spanning 90 hectares. Turfworx, who was appointed by the Thesen Island Homeowners Association, has been involved in the project since 1 November 2017. The brief was to change the existing landscape into a predominantly indigenous and preferably water-wise landscape. How the brief was realised Annual priorities were sighted by discussions between Turfworx and Thesen Island HOA. These priorities were then upgraded on an ongoing basis by growing and buying some of the material. The bulk of the plants were grown on the location, and all of the organic waste was used to make compost on-site, which was reused in the new gardens and flowerbeds. The on-site nursery and compost heaps supplied 90% of Turfworx's needs. Lastly, the specialised fynbos was bought from local suppliers.

RUSTENBURG MALL
GREENACRES LANDSCAPES
Size: 40 000 m² Completed: 2021 Location: Rustenburg, North West Province
www.greenacreslandscapes.co.za @greenacreslandscapessa
After almost seven years of planning, Rustenburg Mall opened its doors at the end of April 2021. Designed by MDS Architecture, the development is a collaboration between Moolman Group, Twin City Development and JB Holdings. Client brief The public transport hub and broader road infrastructure were important to consider in the design, as was climate control, considering the high temperatures experienced in Rustenburg. Structural design of exterior Rustenburg Mall has three entrances, which evoke inviting tree-like canopies, as if to invite gatherings. Each entrance also features large sculptural signs made up of individual 2m-high lettering structures to proudly emphasise Rustenburg. The contextual rock formations and Acacia tree inspirations have translated into the structural design and aesthetics of Rustenburg Mall. Careful attention has been given to bespoke features which celebrate creativity and mimic its natural surroundings. The design of the rofs at Rustenburg Mall is inspired by Acacia trees, being symbols of expansive shelters for gathering and community get-togethers. Exterior tactile materials such as timber and steel, are softened by vertical gardens, which blend into the very fabric of the building.
JUDGES' COMMENTS 'This is a big project. The total upgrade of this site was 12 500m2 of public space, including the new mall, and linking the taxi rank to the urban residential space around the mall. At the height of the project, Greenacres Landscapes were coordinating multiple teams, totalling 80 staff members. The main water feature is state-of-the-art execution, with a beautifully constructed pump room. Greenacres were involved in the design of the water feature, as well as specifying pumps, lights and nozzles. The quality of the work is of a very high standard. A superb design with an installation that is close to perfection. Great plant material inside and outside the mall. Special attention was given to the finishings of the hard landscaping elements.' Greenacres Landscapes totally upgraded the site that the new mall has been built in. The quality of the work is very high and no compromise was made- from the hard landscaping elements to the soft elements. This is a true reflection of using a healthy budget to the fullest in order to achieve full customer satisfaction and landscape beauty. Only a couple of trees are askew due to their growth habits despite being staked. Aside from this, everything depicted is close to perfection. Truly a great response to a fantastic design. The use of gravel fix secures the gravel well in areas of high traffic.'

The marketplace The marketplace is a multi-functional, central entertainment area and the perfect spot for socialising. Having its own entrance uniquely formalises activities for a rich, tactile, and unified experience. Several full-sized Acacia trees take pride of place in the vibrant area, creating a physical tree canopy indoors. A massive LED screen adds to the audio-visual entertainment offering. The marketplace offers pop-up stores, a giant chess board, two different children’s play areas and communal dining area to serve the nearby restaurants and take-away eateries. Flexibility in the marketplace was achieved by incorporating kiosks and ‘tuk-tuks’, bringing together bespoke, craft-like offerings with more mainstream food offerings.

KWADUKUZA PEOPLE’S PARK Size: 20 000 m² Completed: 2021 Cost: R1.5 million Location: Theunissen Road, KwaDukuza (formerly known as Stanger), KwaZulu-Natal. The site The site was an existing, but dilapidated park, which was very marshy, and a crime hotspot due to limited fencing and security. The site also had an existing Shembe Church (place of worship) which was meant to be preserved. Some of the existing trees also needed to be preserved. Conmar Horticulture was appointed by the civil contractor as a sub-contractor for the following scope of work:
• • • • •
Design, supply and install a simple waterwise QC valve irrigation system Supply and install all landscaping work as per design Supply and install kids play equipment in the demarcated area Supply and install outdoor gym equipment in the demarcated area Post-completion horticultural maintenance for 3 months
Conmar Horticulture was appointed to commence in March 2020, but then the COVID-19 state of disaster lockdown was announced 1 day after commencement. All work had to be suspended. Work resumed in August 2020, when lockdown restrictions were eased for construction works to proceed. This was a challenge since Conmar Horticulture had already received delivery of plant material to be used in the early phases of the landscape installation. The team, then, had to set up a site nursery and have one employee onsite three times a week to irrigate the plants during lockdown level 5. One of the other challenges was that the plant palette was that of a wetland theme. However, the site was no longer a wetland since the civil contractor imported tons of subsoil instead of topsoil. After the first spring rains, it was discovered that the imported subsoil had a high clay content. Conmar had to change the plant palette accordingly. The clay was extremely sticky, when wet, and extremely hard, when dry. To mitigate this, Conmar Horticulture rotovated loads of lime, gypsum, compost, and superphosphate fertiliser into the subsoil to improve the structure for landscaping.

JUDGES' COMMENTS 'KwaDukuza People's Park is honestly one of the best projects seen this year. Conmar is committed, and the whole team has been dedicated to the rollout of a world-class public park installation from the start. A suitable landscape for all ages, this park has excellent features. It is based on a sustainable, people-orientated design and represents an incredible installation in a public open space. Conmar Horticulture installed the irrigation, kids' play equipment and landscaped planting. This was an inspirational project for the judges. Conmar Horticulture went beyond expectations with exceptional design interpretation. Both of these aforementioned projects were uncompromising on the quality of the work and material.'

Jaco Havenga, Turfworx, accepting the Best Specialised Turf Construction trophy from Stefan Cloete, Evergreen Turf, and National Chairperson, Gafley Carelse.
Size: 1 812 m2 Completed: 2018 Location: Knysna, Western Cape The old putting green area was small and needed to reflect the conditions on the golf course. Only a small portion of the old green was fit for purpose. The client wanted Turfworx to create a chipping and putting facility in the provided space that reflects the look and feel of the golf course. The greens had to be built to the USGA specifications and the layout had to be practical. Lastly, the construction had to be completed in 20 days. How the brief was realised The space had to be created by removing a few old flowerbeds on one side, and cutting into a veld grass area on the other. New mounds were created between the putting and chipping greens to define the two areas. The design and shaping had to be very clever because of the limited space available. This was done by creating two distinct levels. This created a feeling of space without using a bigger area. Sourcing materials All materials were sourced from local suppliers. The construction was completed in a record 14-day period!

JUDGES' COMMENTS ‘The success of any design is measured by the increased use of the space. The new design and construction increased usage of the space and has opened up the area to accommodate a great 180 degree view. The chipping green with its bunker are well placed and constructed to replicate the effect of the original course. This has allowed for players to practice what may happen in reality when playing the course. Good understanding of turf grasses has allowed for this excellent putting greens. A job well done.’

JUDGES' COMMENTS ‘A breath of fresh air in a school that prides itself on many sporting activities. This project brought light and new life as it moved from the traditional natural grass fields and showed the prominence of synthetic grass as the new way of constructing multi-purpose courts. The lines and finish are superb with the weaving of the nets around the court making use of new technology to accommodate for future movement. The contrast between this court and the older courts around it, motivates for a new shift in school sports towards artificial turf.

Completed: 2021 Location: Welkom, Free State Turftech was appointed to reconstruct four existing hard netball courts and convert them to artificial turf multisports courts to accommodate netball, hockey and tennis at Welkom Volkskool in October 2021, and the project was completed in December 2021. The client was very involved during the planning of this facility and travelled to Gauteng with all the coaches and some netball players to come and play on some of the various artificial turf facilities constructed by Turftech in the Gauteng region, and needless to say, once they experienced the amazing facilities, the final decision was easy. Turftech installed the following products on the new facility. The Artificial Turf MT15mm Multi Sports Sand Dressed Turf was installed across the 4 netball courts. Turftech were also responsible for the reconstruction of the existing base as the percentage slopes on the old courts were incorrect, not allowing surface water to drain off the platform. The site The site was a hive of activity during construction, and many challenges were posed during the project with the unexpected, extremely high rainfall experienced in SA during the summer months. Turftech was also responsible for the installation of the new galvanized fencing enclosure covered with 45mm mesh netting. The enclosure included three pedestrian gates and one vehicle gate for maintenance purposes. Turftech was responsible for the full design and build of the amazing facility. Maintenance of artificial turf is extremely important. It is critical to make sure that all debris has been removed from the surface on a daily basis by means of a blower or walk-behind sweeper to avoid debris breaking down into smaller particles and getting trapped in between fibres, which in turn, promotes algae growth that can cause the turf to become slippery. Turftech are market leaders and specialists when it comes to the deep cleaning maintenance and renovations of artificial turf facilities.

HOUSE MCCORMACK Size: 500 m² Completed: 2022 Location: Umdloti, KwaZulu-Natal In February 2017, Simon Clements headed into the design process with the client and architect and by August, soil works commenced. Planting was implemented between September and November. Intense post-installation maintenance had to be done and was completed by February the following year. New gardener training included briefing the new gardener on the style of the garden, how the garden will evolve and grow into itself, what to expect and how to manage it. Simon Clements is responsible for occasional and additional planting by request of the client. The site Set on a primary sea-facing dune overlooking Umdloti, the steep and challenging site consisted of a copse of Mimusops caffra within the construction area and was also badly overrun with invasive alien vegetation, in particular, Barbados gooseberry (Pereskia aculeata). In preparation for landscaping, a dedicated team of alien vegetation removal practitioners manually removed the alien plants. The slope was stabilised by adding good quality topsoil and compost, leaf litter, and by densely planting indigenous ground cover (specifically, Asystasia gangetica and Microsorum scolopendria). Lastly, all builders’ rubble and cementitious waste was carefully removed from the planting areas. The brief and realisation of the brief The client had an enormous appreciation for the KZN coast and dune forests, so they quickly bought into the idea of creating a ‘curated wilderness’ by recreating a lush, coastal Red Milkwood forest with carefully selected understory plants. Additional Milkwoods were planted into the existing copse and throughout the garden. Understory plants included Clivias, Scadoxis, Haemanthus albiflos and Dracaena aletriformis. Screening was achieved by using a classic Brachylaena and Strelitzia nicolai mix. To ensure that the brief was properly achieved, special attention was given to alien vegetation removal and soil amelioration, as a significant part of the budget, was allocated to building up a good soil profile. Appropriate plant selections and placement, as well as post-installation maintenance, was part of implementation, as Simon Clements includes 3 months of post-installation maintenance on larger contracts. Understanding that no garden is truly ‘low maintenance’ and that gardens require on-going, regular input from a dedicated gardener, is an important part of ensuring the long-term success of a landscape. We were very fortunate that this client understood this. Sourcing materials Simon Clements develop good relationships with all suppliers and ensure that the plants and materials used on jobs are of the best quality. Simon and his team often visit nurseries for specific jobs to carefully select the trees and plants used and have these set aside. All trees are guaranteed for a year, post-installation.

JUDGES' COMMENTS ‘This house is very private from the road entering the property. It literally gives nothing away. As soon as one enters the front yard, there is a glimpse of what’s to come without spoiling the party with the softening of the exposed concrete aggregate, with lawn and a hedge that frames the boundary wall. The magic happens as one enters the backyard, where the design had to contend by creating a meaningful definition of the land, while embracing the view of the Indian Ocean. The space is small, but the size and design of the house allowed for pockets of design. In an interesting selection of plants, we experience the vibrancy of Dune Fern providing a backdrop to the boldness of Scadoxus and a few natural grasses. The Nymphaea (Water Lily) gives a nice introduction to the Cyperus, which stands tall and solid, creating a backdrop for the water feature that connects the two halves of the house. There is indeed a seamless transition between the garden and its surrounding landscapes leading towards the ocean which is a safe haven for the colony of monkeys that lives in Umdloti.

Like a true artist given the freedom of expression, GvH Landscapes took this task to another level with their fantastic display of plant knowledge and a vibrant colour palette. It is a fusion of both foliage and flower colour, which has left the homeowners with a problem of dealing with buck and monkeys, while adding tons of bird food to their grocery list. Perched on a mountaintop overlooking the escarpment valley, the garden is designed to respond well to the topography of the site. The picturesque abode enjoys the view from all angles in and around the house, offering onlookers a feast for the eyes as suprising elements appear around every corner throughout the garden. There is a short driveway, and it is designed so well that you can't help but make a few stops along the way to appreciate its splendour. This project is what landscaping is all about.'

Detailed brief from the client The client wanted colour, colour, and more colour throughout the year, but also gave complete free reign and artistic freedom to create the garden. She had seen some of our gardens before and liked our style of landscaping. The emphasis was on 70% indigenous and 30% old-fashioned favourites such as Hydrangea, Impatiens, Fuschia, and Gardenia. Emphasis was placed on flowering plants to attract bees, birds, insects and other wildlife. However, fruiting plants were avoided due to the baboon problem in the area. Natural flowing lines were created to blend into the surrounding landscape and a natural feel with regard to planting and plant selection. How the brief was realised With regard to earthworks and the shaping of subsoil, embankments, and the installation of subsurface drains, the entire site is pot clay. The moving and spreading of topsoil had to be done mostly by hand. Irrigation installation took place once all of the topsoil was in place. Soil preparation was done by spreading and digging in the compost and fertilisers. Sourcing materials and other relevant information GvH Landscapes made use of heavy clay subsoil, minimal imported topsoil, steep slopes, and installed agri-drains. The embankments were stabilised with sandbags and sown with indigenous grass seed. All materials were locally sourced from George, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay. Plants were sourced from Cape Town, George, Plettenberg Bay, and Gqeberha.

SALI AWARDS ISSUE 2022 JUDGES' COMMENTARY JOANNE HILLIAR
KwaZulu-Natal Regional Judge
Q: Water Wise is a fully fledged, stand-alone category at the SALI Awards. How would you describe the water-wise concept in 'corporate-style landscaping' vs. 'residential landscaping?' Do you think corporate landscapers are currently viewing the water-wise approach as an asset? Or would you say this approach is more common in the residential sector? Can you tell us more about your general opinion on the water-wise elements found in SALI projects? It has been good to see how the commercial and industrial sectors are going about incorporating the water-wise concept into their landscapes. The ultimate result will be left in the hands of the competent contractors who are passionate about implementing these options into their design and the theme of the landscape, or as extensions to the initial project. What we see in this sector will be a competent understanding of what to do in the conversion of areas of landscape design. I have been impressed by these conversions and new concepts, especially the ones that utilise endemic planting choices for the correct biome. There has also been an interest and dedication to creating unusual commercial or industrial opportunities, even when dealing with nonunderstanding clients. Therefore, having a good relationship with your clients will help to convey a greater enthusiasm to go the water-wise route. In closing, the contractor will be totally focused on the best way forward knowing how important it is to introduce these changes. Very encouraging to see from a judge's point of view.
ANTOINETTE DE BEER
Western Cape Regional Judge Q: Do you think corporate landscapers are currently viewing the water-wise approach as an asset? Or would you say these principles are more common in the residential sector? Of the nine projects we evaluated, four were corporate projects. Three of these entrants viewed waterwise principles as an asset, which is evident in their limited use or absence of lawn areas, the presence of harvested rainwater or reused greywater systems, a variety of drought-tolerant plant species, and the extensive use of mulch. Two out of the four projects entered into the maintenance category were water wise. There was a notable and interesting difference in maintenance cost per square metre per month: the water-wise projects were approximately 70% less expensive on average than the projects that did not use water-wise elements. The case for water-wise projects has been proven many times, but this underscores the advantages once more. We only had the opportunity to evaluate one residential project, which makes it difficult to compare corporate versus residential projects on the basis of being water wise. Residential projects generally have more lawn areas that require more irrigation; however, lawn areas tend to be a specific size that directly relates to a homeowner's needs. Planting palettes are usually drought tolerant, diverse, and practical for screening, colour, softening, or other purposes. Water-wise residential landscapes usually harvest rainwater for irrigation purposes. Although this will not completely eliminate the use of potable water during the peak of the summer season in winter rainfall regions, it does make a significant contribution to reducing the amount of potable water used for irrigation purposes. The project we evaluated included all of the above, making it a good example of a water-wise landscape — even if it was not a xeriscape landscape project that clients think of when considering water-wise landscaping.

KAREN MARAIS
Gauteng Regional Judge Q: What had the biggest impact on you this SALI season? Were there any stand-out innovations on projects or noteworthy concepts that made you think ‘wow, now that is exciting for the industry’? Each year, your judge’s card will offer a rare project or two that expose you to something new, and inspiringly so. It is when you allow your eyes and mind to see the greater effect of the installation — be it on a large or small scale — that you truly appreciate what has been created. This year, I could not help but feel that there is a renewed energy to do better for both the community and for the environment — realms that are not purely landscapes. Two projects brought this notion forward for me and made me rethink how our skills and knowledge as landscapers, suppliers, and designers within our industry are integral to and need to adapt to find place in a world starving for green principles in so many other ways. For example, for Phillip Morris International, the international tobacco company, it was a necessity to minimise monthly costs spent on the disposal of waste from their Benoni premises that prompted the journey towards a zero-waste operation. Calling upon the expertise of Life Earth (a division of Life Green Group), they have been able to deal with waste product almost completely within their property. They have installed a bioreactor to filter and clear effluent from their production line turning it into potable water — an inspiring and world-class intervention. Further investment has seen the installation of an Earth Cycler system, several Bokashi bins, and, of course, a waste separation area for recycling items that cannot be reused on site. Renewing the way we think about our planet and its resources, coupled with simple changes in protocol and systems, can have far-reaching benefits. Although not necessarily a landscape installation, this project was entered into the SALI awards under the Environmental category and goes to exhibit just how diverse our industry is and how much it has to offer in this world that is desperate to see the regeneration of our environment. What about landscapes as a tool to uplift social degradation? The story of the successful development of the Nike Sports Centre in Soweto serves as an excellent example. This is an incredible facility, drawing on youth to be active, fit, social, and to build within themselves in a safe and elevating environment. There are multiple outdoor sports courts and fields, running tracks, a skateboard arena, and the list goes on. Within the club building there are studios for dancing and boxing, a gym, as well as work and study spaces. The centre is open to all by way of simple registration and there seems to be an implicit respect for equipment and space. Talk Landscapes, the brilliant and enthusiastic landscape contractor, installed the latest phase of the landscape, and is responsible for maintenance of the entire site. Yet, this facility means much more than business to them. They see an opportunity to introduce community gardens in which to facilitate horticultural workshops, allowing for youngsters to learn interactively and produce food for their own homes. To them, growing the landscape means growing the community. Upon entering this development, the energy is instantly palpable. Although this landscape project is different from what we would normally expect, it is a safe and beautifully kept outdoor space that serves as a canvas that houses all of the fun. It is an escape and a place of enrichment, health, and growth that is immensely valuable to the greater community — more so than I think could ever meet the eye. Again, what our industry has to offer must go beyond the call of having gardens for the sake of having gardens. The opportunity to uplift the community and protect our resources and environment is far-reaching in effect.
CHRISTINE PRICE
Western Cape Regional Judge Q: How would you describe the feature you enjoy the most on a project? Was there a specific site where you could see the end user making absolute use of the site as it was intended? While there are certainly still projects with formal gardens, I am interested to see the number of projects that make use of informal and indigenous planting designs, often at the request of the clients. Although they only submitted the project for evaluation, I thought it might be worth mentioning that one of my favourite projects that we visited was Thabakholo Environmental Solution's hydroseeding at Groot Phesantekraal. I really appreciated this project as it is based on long-term (5-10 years) rehabilitation determined by ecological and conservation principles, as opposed to the 'instant landscape' effect that is so commonly seen. Given the growing emphasis on ecology and biodiversity it would be interesting to see how the landscape industry begins to understand and value the importance of projects such as these in the years to come.

LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION WITH IN-HOUSE DESIGN A D O UBLE GO LD AWA R D I S PR ES ENTED TO CO NTO UR S D ESI G N ST UD I O FO R WEAV ER 'S NES T I N HI GGOVA LE, CA P E TOWN This is a project where the site is unquestionably unique and where the building is almost 'suspended in mid-air' retaining a serene relationship with nature. The erf straddles a small valley which forms part of the Cape Town City Council (CTCC) drainage system. In addition, there are several massive granite rocks that intercept or flank the valley creating beautiful natural features. When the house was originally built, it won an award of Merit for its light ‘footprint’ on the ground. The home is made from a number of separate structures, each one raised above the ground with minimal structural ‘tread’ on the earth. The two structures on either side of the valley are connected by an elevated corridor that is at canopy height but are otherwise independent of each other. The starting architecture is intriguing and both floors of the house sit way above the ground. Since they are surrounded by tall trees, one has the sense of not only being surrounded by trees, but being in the trees from both inside the building or from the walkway above. Despite these starting strengths, the rest of the erf had not been developed after the house was built, and it looked as if the old garden retaining walls were a hangover from the neighbour’s property before it was subdivided. The site is lush and richly textured with shades of green which can be experienced from a distance, or close up as one wanders through the garden. Water is a linking element through the garden and an element that all creatures are drawn to, so perhaps there is that irresistible pull. The sound of birds and frogs plopping adds a dimension to the garden that is more subtle than flowers. The light falling through the tree canopies sets up movement even if one can’t feel the breeze.
J UD GE S ' CO M M E N T S ‘The client requested a lush tropical garden which was ‘not too organized.' The client also wanted to harness the existing City stormwater drainage channel to create a permanent water feature. ‘A tropical oasis has been created,' commended the judges. ‘Storm water pours into a water feature and then into ponds in the lower garden. The tropical garden blends beautifully with the house. All plants and soil on site had to be carried in by hand. Grow lights were installed under a staircase. The installed landscape has adapted very well to the environment and ecology is blooming.’

JUDGES' COMMENTS ‘This novel corporate project uses a world-class plant palette with out-of-the-ordinary plant mixes. The project is truly a beacon of innovation. Countryline is also to be commended on their attention to detail on such a challenging 4 200 square metre site. Another notable aspect is the high quality of all the materials. The planter boxes, paving, and seating areas also offer superb interest spots. Moreover, the plants are maturing very well. The Countryline team successfully overcame the challenges of limited accessibility and the landscaping construction that was undertaken on a basement. A well-deserved Double Gold.'

In and around the grounds of the residence, outdoor furniture and greenery help to provide a space that stimulates jovial interaction between students in meeting places.
JUDGES' COMMENTS ‘A residential refurb at the Faculty of Veterinary Science was undertaken on the existing buildings as well as on the landscaping of outdoor activities such as gyms and large chess boards. FSG installed irrigation, levelled areas, imported 300mm G6 compact material, screed, and paving. Rubber flooring, gym equipment and a rainwater harvesting system were installed to water a newly planted landscape. The rainwater harvesting system, which is backed up by borehole water, deserves special mention. Today, absolutely no muncipal water is used for the 3500 square metre landscape on this property. A well-deserved Gold Medal for this water-wise installation at Onderstepoort.'
