JEANETTE’S JEWELS

This months shining jewel is a local gem, Decriminalize Denton! Founded in 2020 by UNT SSDP founder and former president Tristen Seikel, DecrimDenton started as a way to continue drug policy activism beyond graduation. Last year DecrimDenton made waves with their ballot initiative campaign to decriminalize misdemeanor cannabis possession, Proposition B. Prop B also included clauses which prevent the smell of cannabis possession from being used as probable cause for search and seizure, as well as prohibiting the use of city funds to test concentrates like vape cartridges for THC. On Nov. 8th 2022 Prop B passed by about 72% with over 32,000 votes, breaking a record for the most votes any initiative or candidate has ever received in the City of Denton’s history. Prop B also received more votes than either governor candidate in every single precinct, proving it to truly be the non-partisan will of the people. Since it’s passing city council members have fought against its implementation citing a violation of state law, despite the fact numerous other Texas cities have passed similar initiatives with no legal pushback setting a clear legal precedent for Denton. Currently multiple of these so-called representatives are up for re-election and Decriminalize Denton has sent out a pledge to all council members and candidates asking if they promise to uphold the will of the people by support ing the full implementation of Prop B. The goal of this pledge is said to be transpar ency, with leaders saying that voters deserve to know where candidates stand so they may ensure their voices are accurately heard. Stay up to date by following @decrimdenton on all social media and be sure to make your voice heard by voting on or before May 6th 2023.

Guilty pleasures

Guilty pleasures, we all have them! From weird food cravings to binge watching trashy reality tv, most people have things they enjoy that are not always enjoyed by the majority- and that’s okay! While some guilty pleasures might seem more eccentric than others, if it brings you joy that is the most important thing. Guilty pleasures can also be something that might bring you comfort, or be acts of personal wellness or mindfulness, which is even more of a reason to indulge in them for yourself!

For me personally, some of my guilty pleasures include reading queer smutty romance novels, watching silly reality tv shows like Jersey Shore or Too Hot To Handle, or smoking a joint in the bath. For me they are things I really enjoy that I recognize others may not like, however they bring me comfort and are a form of self-care and wellness! I think it is important to remember that you don’t have to explain yourself to anyone, and if you like something that’s different such as putting hot sauce on your popcorn, (trust me it’s good) that’s totally okay because it is something for you, and not anyone else. What are some of your guilty pleasures you like to indulge in? -Brynne

afternoon tea with Popo

Before Lexi started going to school, we used to have tea together in the afternoon. It was a wonderful time to simply chat. Tea, I think more than coffee, though I can't really comment much about coffee having been a life-long tea drinker, is more conducive to being a retreat from the day rather than driving it. Such a ritual can greatly enhance our appreciation of what Life is offering us and how we're engaging with that, like a miniature meditation retreat we can just be present to how things are. My preference, due to a caffeine allergy, is for herbal teas along with their nutritional and health benefits, aromas, and tastes. We can talk more about tea, even make recommendations but this little column is mainly about the meditation part, whether you meditate or not, have an interest in or questions about meditation. For now, just know that meditation is a practice, which means a habit, albeit a good habit, that offers wonderful results for how we're living our Life by offering insights into who and how we are, how things are. Sitting, enjoying, just being, savoring the aromas and tastes Life is offering us. Enjoy!

Go caming

It’s April, which means spring is here! Spring symbolizes new beginnings and growth, the shedding of our winter coat, and the rebirth of the world around us. The days are getting warmer and longer, and as we perform our rituals of spring cleaning we watch the flowers start to bud, the trees growing new leaves, and there is such a vibrant energy in the air. Spring time can be the start of new beginnings, relationships, or hobbies, and is a great time for reflection of things you want to leave behind, while setting the intentions for new growth in your life.

Spring can be exciting and invigorating as the energy in the air is buzzing and electric, with so many possibilities and a positive shift to your mood. Use this time to connect again with yourself and speak your intentions for the rest of your year. What is something you want to learn about yourself? Your surroundings? What is something you wish to accomplish? Spring is also a great time to leave behind things that might have been stunting your ability to learn and grow, or reflect on the things you wish to leave that no longer serve you. Use this spring as a time for healing, new energy, and a time to wake up and really experience the life that is blooming around you. What intentions are you setting for yourself this April?

I did and it was so much fun.
