It’s time to embrace the beauty of the season. As nature comes alive, we’re invited to step outside, connect with others, and enjoy the warmth and wonders around us. Spring is a time for growth, relaxation, and new adventures.

In March, we jump right into the season with a hands-on Wreath Class, where you’ll create a stunning living wreath using succulents and moss. Later in the month, bring your furry friends to the Lucky Paws Yappy Hour at the Bark Park to soak up the sunshine and socialize.

On March 19, join us for a luxury coach bus ride to the Miami Open, where we’ll enjoy a full day of professional tennis at Hard Rock Stadium.

As March winds down, we’ll unwind at the Sunset Polo Happy Hour at Sarasota Polo Club, offering a relaxing evening with a close-up view of the polo match, light bites, and great company. Don’t miss the Spring Break Bash at

In April, the season continues to bloom with even more exciting events! Join us for Near the Bar Bingo at The Venue, where you can play and socialize with fellow Members. The Candle Making Class will give you the chance to learn how to create your own personalized candles. Toward the end of April, don’t miss the Guided Mangrove Kayaking Tour, where you’ll explore Sarasota Bay and spot dolphins, manatees, and other local wildlife.

YOUR CULINARY & BEVERAGE MANAGER

Please join us in welcoming Joel to the team as our Culinary and Beverage Manager! Joel is a passionate food and fine wine specialist with over 15 years of experience, Joel began his career as a server assistant in downtown Sarasota. Through dedication and hard work, he advanced to the position of General Manager at the same establishment. Eventually, Joel acquired the restaurant, rebranded it, and later sold it.

Afterward, Joel joined the Meadows Country Club as a Food and Beverage Manager. He was later promoted to Director of Catering, where he successfully executed thousands of events over the past three years. Recently, Joel took his passion for wine to another level and completed the Court of Master Sommeliers examination, earning certification as an Introductory Sommelier.

Joel brings a deep passion for crafting unforgettable dining experiences and curating a bespoke beverage program. Joel’s passions include exploring global cuisine, and worldly wines. He has been married for five years and currently resides in St. Petersburg.

Mike Mann

YOUR EXECUTIVE CHEF

We are excited to welcome Chef Mike to the team! Chef Mike was born in Decatur, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta, and developed a deep love for food at an early age. He fondly recalls watching his grandmothers cook Sunday suppers and prepare holiday meals, which sparked his passion for the culinary world. Chef Mike has been working in restaurants since he was fourteen years old, gaining invaluable experience along the way.

With a particular fondness for the flavor profiles of Italian cuisine and the techniques of a French kitchen, Chef Mike has honed his skills through years of dedication and practice. Outside of the kitchen, he has several hobbies, including collecting vintage cookbooks and rare carbon steel knives. He also enjoys surf fishing during his downtime and the occasional quail hunt with friends. A fan of good bourbon, Chef Mike has a soft spot for pickles of all types and cheese.

Why did you choose Esplanade and where are you from?

Lynn and Jon Veldman’s journey to Azario was truly love at first sight. The amenities were exactly what they had been searching for – a golf community complete with tennis courts, a well-equipped gym, and stunning homes.

They were thoroughly impressed with the quality of the finished models and were thrilled to find a few golf lots still available. One of their favorite things about their new home is watching the foursomes pass by on the first hole, which adds a peaceful charm to the area.

Having recently relocated from Fells Point, downtown Baltimore, Lynn and Jon hope this will be their last move for quite some time. Their story spans over 40 years, beginning in Chicago before taking them to Ohio, Michigan, and later overseas to Spain, Brazil, Sweden, France, Japan, and Singapore. After returning to the U.S., they lived and worked in Connecticut and Maryland before finally settling in Florida.

What is your favorite place to travel?

Lynn and Jon Veldman’s trips have taken them to over 50 countries, each offering something unique and memorable. However, India holds a special place in their hearts, as it is Jon’s childhood home. Lynn has a deep connection to India as well, having started a U.S.based charity that funds an Indian orphanage, which she visits every year.

Their love for travel extends to Europe too, with southern Portugal being a favorite vacation spot. However their absolute favorite city is Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. They describe it as a place that feels like it’s straight out of a fairy tale, with its charming medieval streets and picturesque beauty. It’s clear that Lynn and Jon’s experiences around the world have left them with rich memories and deep connections.

What activities and events do you like to participate in at Azario?

At Azario, Lynn and Jon stay active and engaged, spending much of their time on the tennis courts and the golf course with both old friends and the new ones they’ve yet to meet. They also love socializing at the restaurant venues, making the most of the community’s vibrant atmosphere.

Their social circle extends beyond sports and dining – they have a lot of fun with a Euchre group, where they share laughs and friendly

competition. Lynn also stays busy with her passions, enjoying Bible Study, a book club, and an arts and crafts group, all of which help her stay connected and creative within the community. It’s clear they’ve found a perfect blend of relaxation, activity, and social engagement at Azario.

What is your favorite dish to make?

Lynn and Jon’s love for food is just as diverse and flavorful as their travels. They’re especially fond of ethnic cuisines, with Indian and Thai dishes being their favorites—spicy food is a must! They also enjoy entertaining and preparing a wide variety of dishes to please a crowd. When it comes to cooking, Jon has a special connection to Spanish cuisine, having learned to make Tortilla Española during their time in Spain. It sounds like their home is filled with delicious food and great company!

Recent Events

Two Blooms FLORAL CLASS

During the week of Thanksgiving, Members participated in a beautiful floral arrangement class led by Two Blooms. At the end of the session, everyone was able to take home their arrangements to enjoy for the holiday. The event was so popular that we hosted another floral arrangement class in December.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers GAME

Members gathered for an exciting outing to cheer on our local Tampa Bay Buccaneers as they took on the New Orleans Saints! The Bucs had an incredible season, and it was a great opportunity to support them on their road to victory. It was an unforgettable experience— everyone had a blast.

Gingerbread House COMPETITION

To get into the holiday spirit, Members were challenged to a Gingerbread House Competition. We had 8 teams, each with 2-4 Members, competing for the title of best house, as voted by everyone! Each team was also invited to bring up to four additional edible decorations to add their unique touch to the houses.

Potluck WORLD TOUR

Members came together for food and fun at our Potluck World Tour! One of the highlights of living in Azario is the chance to connect with friends from all over the world. Everyone brought their favorite dish to share with the group. Water was provided, but Members were welcome to bring any other beverage of their choice. Lifestyle provided the dessert, making it a delicious end to a fantastic event.

Any Member wishing to develop an interest group or club should contact the Lifestyle Manager to receive information and an application. The Lifestyle Manager will then help to facilitate promotion of activities developed by the Members. All groups and clubs must be open to any Member of the community who is interested in joining.

Grand Wine Tasting

On February 1, Members gathered at the Culinary Center for the Grand Wine Tasting and Locker Stocker Event. Members had the opportunity to explore a diverse selection of wines, ranging from old world to new world, paired with a charcuterie box. At every station, a team of wine professionals presented impressive samples from around the globe in a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, Members were invited to rent wine lockers at the Culinary Center for 2025. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with great wine, food, and company!

Grand Opening of the Culinary Center

Memebers celebrated in style as the latest resort-style amenities opened at Esplanade at Azario Lakewood Ranch! We were thrilled to welcome everyone to the Culinary Center! To mark this exciting milestone in our community, we hosted a grand opening celebration in December. The evening featured live entertainment, dancing, delicious food and beverages, and culminated in a spectacular fireworks show to wrap up the festivities.

Azario Club Championships

We are ecstatic to announce the First Annual Azario Club Championships for Pickleball, Tennis, and Bocce! This event will offer all divisions, men’s, women’s and mixed singles and doubles, with multiple draws. The Club Championships will be played over a 6-week span, with the finals being held on the evening of Friday, April 4.

Draws labeled “Open” are available for Members only and open to all levels. The winners of the Open draws will have their names on a plaque and will be the reigning Club Champions of Azario!

For team events, Members are responsible for finding their own partners and both competitors must register. For all level-based brackets, draws may be combined after registration if applicable.
