have a blessed summer! Because it’s June, June, June!
At that time, only 13 stars were arranged in a field of blue to equal its 13 stripes. This, however, is not to be confused with the Star Spangled Banner which had 15 stars. And no, the 13 stars were not arranged in a circle as the legend of the Betsy Ross flag of 1776 is depicted. In fact, our flag has had 27 changes since 1777. In 1949 President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th as National Flag Day. In an excerpt from I am the Flag by Ruth Apperson Rous, she writes so poignantly: Eternal vigilance is your price of freedom. As you see me silhouetted against the peaceful skies of my country, remind yourself that I am the flag of your country, that I stand for what you are - no more, no less. Guard me well, lest your freedom perish from the earth. Dedicate your lives to those principles for which I stand: “One nation under God, indivisible, with

CERT Drill Recap
[ Department] Articles
By Wayne Schoeffel, CERT On April 27th Solivita CERT conducted a realistic drill dealing with response to a major disaster in Solivita. Thirty-eight CERT members participated in such areas as Command Post, Medical Center, Search and Rescue, and Logistics. Residents may have seen CERT members with their reflective vests, hard hats, and go-bags moving around the community rescuing “victims.” Fourteen residents volunteered to be made up as injured victims to add realism to the drill. These victims were deposited in various predetermined locations and CERT rescue teams were sent to locate them and address reported damage and victim injuries. Those seriously injured were then transported to our Medical Center (set up in the Ballroom) for further treatment. Other personnel in our Command Post, which was set up in the Computer Gallery, managed all this. We employed our radio systems to keep in touch with everyone during the process. We used standard CERT forms to keep track of members participating, teams assigned and their assignments, as well as checking out equipment and documenting victim treatment. Afterwards, we all sat down and conducted a critique of the activities to help us better prepare for future activation. Photos by Judie Chiappone.
