Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

E Katie-Rose Chubb Personal Trainer

772-800-2503 email: personaltrainerkatie@ gmail.com web: personaltrainerkatie. com

xercise physiologists refer to the gradually increasing discomfort that occurs between 24 and 48 hours after activity as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and it is perfectly normal. As personal trainers we see this frequently in week one of training or if we push a client to achieve a different exercise technique. The most common muscle to ache from exercise is the quadriceps at the front of the leg. Sitting down will hurt after training your legs. It is perfectly normal and even happens to personal trainers when we train! Muscle soreness affects every age group regardless of your current physical ability. Delayed onset muscle soreness is a result of physical activity that stresses the muscle tissue beyond what it is accustomed to. It occurs when the muscle is performing an eccentric or a lengthening contraction. An example of this is during a squat, the bending of the knees and sinking of the hips backward can cause the quadriceps to lengthen and then contract as your knees extend. After some repletion this causes micro tears in the muscle. The mild muscle strain injury creates microscopic damage to the muscle fibers. Scientists believe this damage, coupled with the inflammation that accompanies these tears, causes the aching. These are simply indications that muscles are adapting to your fitness regimen. It means that you are starting the journey to amazing fitness results.

The good news is that when you do the same activity again, your muscles will start to get used to it. You will actually have no soreness or less soreness because now you've strengthened the muscle or connective tissue. If soreness does occur again it is usually due to a change in the repetition, weight, or frequency of the exercise. Again, when you get used to the new intensity the soreness will stop. As personal trainers, we feel your pain. Trust me! We are always changing our own routines to get that level of muscle soreness again. It’s no lie; we enjoy it because it means we are getting close to our fitness goals. HOW DO I MAKE THE ACHING STOP? I know for some Vitalia residents this has been a big question. Whirling cherry juice into your post-workout recovery drink may ease muscle soreness, according to a 2010 study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. Antioxidant compounds found in tart cherries called anthocyanins are believed to work by reducing inflammation. Try drinking tart cherry juice on workout days for less pain and inflammation. Post workout you should be drinking a protein shake especially when you are over 55. This not only helps your recovery, but also boosts the calcium and iron levels in your body. There is a bonus side effect for the ladies, which is stronger hair and nails. The protein shake

Continued on Page 9 8   Vitalia Voice | April 2015

Continued From Page 8 supplies branched chain amino acids to your muscles, which will help them recover faster. Your morning Starbucks may be doing more than waking you up before an early morning workout. Studies show drinking coffee prior to a workout reduces muscles soreness and fatigue by nearly half. A hot bath with Epsom salts may feel better initially, but giving muscles the cold treatment via ice treatment (known as "cryotherapy") after exercise is the most beneficial in the days after exercise. A hot bath will provide overall relaxation, but icing speeds healing. An herbal version of Bengay based on the arnica plant is just as effective as ibuprofen in easing pain, according to a 2007 study published in Rheumatology International. The plant can be applied to the skin in a gel or cream form and can help with swelling and soreness. Deep tissue massage following

exercise has been shown to increase blood flow to muscles and speed up the removal of inflammatory chemicals, which produce soreness. Massage above and below the area and then work into the sore part of the muscle. You can also use a self-massage device such as a Thera-Cane or apply pressure to sore muscles using a tennis ball. Your personal trainers are trained in methods to deal with muscle soreness. It does not mean you are injured or your personal trainers are pushing you too hard. It means that you got the perfect amount of workout to build your muscles. To build new muscle we need to create micro tears so they can build back up stronger. If the soreness persists for more than 14 days then we would recommend seeking a physician’s advice. I hope this answers some of your questions.

Mahjong Club Please contact Shelley Deixler at shell842@gmail.com for more information and days/times that the club meets. MALKA'S MAHJONG CORNER ASK THE EXPERT Q: I need to know what to do when I have less than four players. A: With three players, build four walls. Deal 13 tiles to each player (14 to the dealer) as normal. Skip the empty seat (nobody is west, for example) and do not deal tiles to it. Skip the Charleston and just go straight to the dealer's first discard. With two players, do the same and sit opposite of each other. Build four walls. Dealer has 14 tiles and opposite player gets 13 tiles (as usual). No Charleston and no dummy seats. Some people reject the skipping of the Charleston and make a table rule governing how to do a Charleston with three players. For example, here's one way some people do a three-handed Charleston: When passing to the empty seat, place the three tiles by the wall at that side of the table. When taking tiles from the empty seat, take any three tiles from that side of the table. At the end of the Charleston, repair the nowthoroughly-messed-up wall on the empty side of the table. NOTE: When you use a table rule, your group has to work out 16   Vitalia Voice | April 2015
