Summer Cleaning

Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-lm.com 877-221-6919

Summer is definitely here! I trust everyone is having a fantastic summer of travel, seeing family and friends, and relaxing!

to the house, this solution removes mold; lifts off and disperses oils and pollutants; and emulsifies and removes spider sacs and insect residue.

ON GIVING YOUR HOUSE A BATH

Soft-washing is much gentler on surfaces than pressure-washing. Even walls with failing paint (chalking, chipping, or bubbling) can be safely soft-washed. When a home is soft-washed, windows rarely leak, and screens and soffits don’t get blown in. A 1600-square-foot home will generally cost between $250 and $300 to be soft-washed from the roof line all the way down to the ground.

Have you noticed lately that your gutters are looking green? Soffits are going gray? Spiders are leaving egg sacs around, and mud daubers are moving in? If so, your home is a candidate for a wash, and if you don’t want to tackle it yourself, you can hire an exterior cleaning company to do it for you. They’ll do it in a third of the time it will take you because they’ve got products and tools designed specifically for the job. If you decide to hire a company, here’s a little information to help you in your decision: Ask how the company plans to wash your house. Will they soft-wash it or pressure-wash it? Some companies only clean with traditional pressure-washing: water sprayed under high pressure (3000-5000 psi) to accomplish cleaning. Be forewarned if you decide to go this route. The high pressure can damage glass, screens, soffits, paint, architectural foam, and the substrate of your home (stucco, brick, etc.). Some companies clean houses with softwashing. Soft-washing is the use of a mild chemical solution that is sprayed onto surfaces with minimal pressure (under 100 psi). Applied

As with hiring any professional contractor, remember to ask: Are you licensed? Are you insured? Are you certified? Be sure they are licensed and insured. Certification is not as crucial, but if the answer is yes, you have that much more confidence that they are trained and experienced, and will do a great job on your home. If you would like a recommendation on a cleaning company, stop in!

KNOW YOUR DOCUMENTS Did you know that no decorative objects including, but not limited to, bird baths, light fixtures, sculptures, statutes, or weather vanes shall be installed or placed with or upon any portion of Vitalia without the prior written approval of the ARC? Have a fantastic August!

Tips for the Hot Summer Weather

G

reetings from the Lifestyles Department! The summer months are here and it is HOT! I asked some of our trainers for some tips on hydration and keeping cool while enjoying outside activities. Here is what they shared with me.

Carlyn Hagler Lifestyles Director chagler@ evergreen-lm.com 772-800-2505

SUNSCREEN Use sunscreen as a daily regimen! Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you head outdoors. Sunscreen is most effective when given a chance to be absorbed by your skin. Choose sunscreen with an SPF of 25 or above and remember to reapply the sunscreen at least every two hours.

CLOTHING Wear loose, light-colored clothes and a widebrimmed hat to protect your neck, face, and ears. To help you stay cool and avoid sunburn, choose clothing with lighter colors which reflect more of the sun’s rays. Darker colors absorb more UV rays.

6   Vitalia Voice | August 2015

HYDRATION Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydration is one of the most important tips to remember! Remember to bring along a few bottles of water before you head to the pool or beach. Water can come from food, as well. Leafy greens, cucumbers, and berries are all high in water content. Watermelon is 91% water, so what better treat to add to your cooler for extra hydration.

SUN EXPOSURE The sun’s most harmful rays come down between 10am and 2pm. An early morning trip to the beach or pool is a great way to avoid the most intense UV exposure. We have a great group of personal trainers that will answer any of your questions regarding diet and exercise. FREE consultations are available by contacting any of the personal trainers listed on page 8. Have a safe, wonderful rest of your summer and enjoy this piece of tropical paradise we live in!

Book Club Tuesday, August 11th | 9:30am Augustine Room

The book we’ll be discussing at our next meeting is The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. The synopsis follows: Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good? The upcoming book is The Story Hour by Thirty Umrigar for September. In October we will discuss Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution by Michelle Moran.
