Vitalia first is down in the books! Last month the community celebrated their first event in the brand new amenity center, Captiva Club. Decked out in red, white, and blue, the Captiva Club was transformed into a community party destination! What better way to celebrate than to relax poolside with your friends and neighbors in the community you love! With live entertainment playing the likes of the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffet, there were plenty of favorites to keep the crowd dancing and singing along all night long. The night ended with bright fireworks lighting up the Vitalia sky, another first for our blossoming community! A special evening for residents, the 4th of July Pool Party was a great way to kick off the use of this 24,000-square-foot facility featuring a massive ballroom plus activity areas like billiards and dart rooms. Let’s see what’s in store later this month when DJ Michael brings the party to the Grand Treasure Ballroom for the Friday Night Dance. Enjoy an evening with neighbors and guests, but most importantly don’t forget your dancing shoes. DJ Michael will keep you dancing from Big Band
to Disco! With dozens more events planned this year from movie nights to socials, our residents are in for a calendar loaded with plenty of activities to choose from. If you haven’t heard yet, Vitalia has gone social! Social media that is! Vitalia is Facebook official posting pictures of the community you call home, new resident shoutouts, and upcoming events! Architectural Requests I am sure everyone is enjoying Vitalia’s beautiful new Captiva Club Amenity Center and meeting our new staff. This is just a reminder…I am still the contact person for Architectural Requests. This is required for any change you are making to the exterior of your home.

Meet the Personal Trainers
T
he staff has received many inquiries about personal training. When the Captiva Club fitness area was designed, we began the journey of finding your personal trainers. We are happy to introduce Katie Chubb and Bryant Ireland!
Jannell McDonald Community Manager 321-332-1871 jmcdonald@aamfl.com
So how does this all work? Katie and Bryant are not paid by the HOA. They do Orientations and Fitness Assessments for free. The only time that they receive payment is by personal training fees that residents pay for their sessions. Fees are assessed as follows: • $35 for a 30-minute session • $55 for a 60-minute session If you schedule their services for an entire month and pay for those sessions in advance, you will be given a $5 discount on each session within the month! This program is solely on a month-at-a-time basis. You can cancel the service or restart sessions whenever needed.

Although the charges are denounced as preposterous, his accuser is convinced he is right and engages attorney Catherine Lockhart to bring Rosenzweig to justice. Bougainvillea
Nan Rothschild Resident Master Gardener mininan1@htcplus.net
Bougainvillea is an evergreen, tropical, vining shrub that comes in a wide array of bright colors and a variety of sizes and shapes. The first European to describe these plants was Philibert Commerson, a botanist, accompanying French navy admiral and explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville during his circumnavigation while in Brazil. According to botanical-historical accounts, the first European to actually observe the plant was Jeanne Base, Commerson’s lover and assistant, whom he sneaked on board despite regulations, disguised as a man, and, thus, became the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. The “flowers” are actually modified leaves, called bracts, which are long lasting and bright. The colorful bracts outshine the plants true, but tiny, white flower. They appear periodically throughout the year, but are especially plentiful in the winter when splashes of color are a welcome sight. Although bracts of purple, fuchsia, or red are commonly seen, cultivars are now available in apricot, white, yellow, and orange. Bougainvillea require full sun and actually perform better when their soil is left a little dry, making them a great plant for the droughttolerant landscape. Bougainvilleas prefer well-drained acid soil. Chlorosis (yellowing of leaves) can be a problem in alkaline soil. Bougainvillea can be trained to stand alone as a sprawling shrub or allowed to grow naturally where it will quickly cover fences or climb up into trees. Planted on top of a wall, it will cascade over the side in great bouquets of color. With careful pruning it can also be used as an espalier. This is the horticultural practice of controlling woody plant growth by pruning and tying branches to a frame frequently in formal patterns, flat against a structure, such as a wall, fence or trellis. Bougainvillea can be grown in containers. They can also be trained as a standard with a single trunked tree. Dwarf cultivars are used as colorful ground covers.

The best time to prune a Bougainvillea is in late winter or early spring after it flowers, or at the start of the rainy season. If you wait until late summer or early fall, your plant may produce fewer flowers during the following winter. It’s a good idea to wear heavy gloves since many cultivars have sharp thorns. Use a pair of pruning shears to cut back any errant branches and work to give your plant a pleasing shape. Small cuttings can be used to propagate new plants. What is happening if your bougainvillea won’t bloom? Sun is critical. The more sun your vine gets, the more blooms it will put out. Bougainvillea is native to arid climates, so check that your irrigation system isn’t supplying more water than the plant needs. If you’re pruning too often, you could be cutting off new blooms as well. Finally, go easy on the fertilizer as too much nitrogen will encourage your plant to produce leaves instead of blooms. So try neglecting your bougainvillea instead of babying it and you should be rewarded with beautiful blooms. No diseases are of major concern, but occasionally leaf-chewing worms or aphids. Some cultivars to look for: ‘Barbara Karst’bright red, new growth matures to darkest shade of hot pink, vigorous; ‘Afterglow’- yellow orange. ‘Hawaii’- a.k.a. ‘Raspberry Ice’- red with yellow leaf margins, hardy; ‘Elizabeth Angus’-neon purple; ‘Miami Pink’- pink; ‘California Gold’ – yellowy; ‘Summer Snow’white; ‘Double Red’- doubled blossoms; ‘Lady Baring’- a.k.a. ‘Hawaiian Gold,’ or ’Yellow Glory’- bright gold; ‘Sundown Orange’- starts deep orange, turns coral, and finally salmon pink; and ‘Ambiance”- new buds orange, mature to a bright hot pink. Dwarf: ‘Crimson Jewel’- crimson, pink, orange; ‘Oo-la-la’- very purple; ‘Pink Pixie’- for baskets, containers; ‘Variegata’- variegated foliage; B. spectabilis - purple-red, thorny, hairy leaves; and B. glabra- rose red, smooth leaves, less thorny, hardy.

Meet the Candidate for the CDD Board My name is Jack W. Stawski and I reside at 11571 SW Apple Blossom Trail in Vitalia. I have filed for the District 5, Seat 5 on the Traditions CDD Board. District 5 encompasses all of the Vitalia community. I recently relocated to the Vitalia community and I have lived in the Seasons (Levitt & Sons) development in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and The Villages near Ocala, Florida, so I would like to use my experience to enhance the growth of our development. I have lived on the West Coast of Florida for a total of 12 years and I’ve watched the various CDD communities develop into major districts with the amenities that reflect the desires of the residents without an extreme rise in their monthly fees. Fiscal responsibility must be demonstrated in the early stages of a community if the residents are not to be burdened with increases in the monthly assessments.
Having been a student of Florida Statute 190 that created Community Development Districts (CDDs) and utilizing my experiences in The Villages, which is also a CDD community, I would like to share with our residents the nuances associated with being a member of a CDD community. There are many positive aspects of having a CDD, many of which we are beginning to see within the gates of Vitalia. There are many more aspects that we will encounter going forward as Vitalia grows. I would like to be your voice in growing the community with the ultimate goal of having Vitalia be the area that the residents participate in its vision for the future. My experience in managing multiplant facilities throughout the United States, including several plants in Europe and Asia, provides me with the culture of teamwork and achieving goals that lead to reduced costs and customer satisfaction. Please vote for me on Election Day, November 4th so I can be your voice in matters concerning the growth of Vitalia and if you see me around the community stop and say "Hello."
