News from AV Homes By David Smith, Division President of AV Homes, Inc.
As
the newest Vitalia at Tradition amenity, the Captiva Club has played host to quite a few community-event firsts like last month’s five-piece band performance. Residents enjoyed this talented group performing in the Grand Treasure Ballroom, crooning to the smooth sounds of this acoustic show. Later this month, residents and guests will be ringing in the New Year at the biggest party in Tradition during Vitalia’s New Year’s Eve Celebration at the Captiva Club. We’re making community history with this formal event, as it will be the first New Year’s Eve celebrated at the Captiva Club complete with festive decorations, music, and dancing. If you’re hosting a holiday celebration this year, show off your amazing active lifestyle by inviting guests to experience one of the several events held in the community each month. With great weekly fitness classes, creative clubs, and coordinated special events like the New Year’s
Eve Celebration, there are so many opportunities to indulge in the lifestyle. The next step would be to visit the New Home Sales Center where you’ll find Vitalia’s new portfolio of home designs on display plus a list of inventory new homes that can be enjoyed just in time for the holidays! As the saying goes, great friends make great neighbors! We’ve had the privilege of celebrating many Vitalia at Tradition milestones this year starting with the Treasure Coast Parade of Homes home designs awards, the grand opening of the Captiva Club, followed by a long list of fantastic events, dances, and shows. Outshining any event or accolade, the most significant highlight in the community is the residents. With a new year on the horizon, I look forward to the continued growth and success in this extraordinary community we’ve created together. David Smith 863-427-7000

Safety Tips & Tricks for the Holiday Season
Jannell McDonald Community Manager 321-332-1871 jmcdonald@aamfl.com
During this busy time of year we want to offer you some helpful hints to keep you and your family safe and well. Often we are so focused on the tasks we need to accomplish we forget to enjoy the time spent with family and friends. The holidays bring trips and travel, shopping, and family outings. To make sure you have fewer things to worry about this holiday season while you are away from your home, use the following ideas for a safe, happy, and enjoyable holiday season.
For Traveling • • • • • •
For the Home •
•
•
•
•
Have a timer set for your lights. If they are used the entire holiday season, people will not know when you are away from your home. Be aware of potential hazardous decorative plants for grandchildren and pets (lilies, poinsettia, and mistletoe). Make sure your holiday decorations are in good condition before putting them up - no cracked wires, broken bulbs, etc. Space heaters should be inspected for loose connections and frayed wires before using. Place them at lease three feet away and do not leave them unattended! Don’t give out your gate code. If you are having guests over, tell them to call you to be let in.
For Shopping • •
• •
Get cash back while at the store so you don’t have to use ATMs. Check your balances frequently; don’t reply to emails or texts with personal account information. Keep packages out of sight in your vehicle and don’t leave them out overnight. Don’t get more than you can carry, have your keys out when walking to your car, and check the backseat before getting in.
4 Vitalia Voice | December 2014
Charge your cell phone and keep it handy! Never leave bags unattended. Be aware of your surroundings. Get plenty of rest before setting out on a long trip. Observe and obey all speed limits and buckle up. Eliminate distractions, such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, and adjusting the stereo. These are all examples of things that can take your eyes and attention off of the road, which is exactly what you want to avoid.
For Pets •
•
• • •
Always keep pets on a leash, as new people and new decorations can be stressful for animals. Place decorations out of reach or make sure they are anchored to prevent accidents. People food can be harmful to pets; make sure to secure leftovers and garbage. Have a quiet place pets can go in your home to escape crowds and noise. Make your neighborhood relations merry and bright! Clean up after your pet as you walk.
I hope you have a Happy and Safe Holiday Season, and a Happy New Year!

enjoyed treats. Plans are already underway for next year’s Halloween Bash - bigger and better than ever! Our Lifestyles team has been very busy recently. We have been re-organizing office procedures, identifying processes that require updating, and undergoing training so that we may better serve the Vitalia community. I am so proud of each and every member of our staff! They are all hard working and always eager to lend a helping hand. Thank you, ladies for all that you do to enhance the Captiva Club experience for our members!

announcement of a problem are dead and should be returned to the rack.
Men's Golf Mondays
Please contact Shelley Deixler at shell842@gmail.com for more information and days/times that the club meets. MALKA'S MAHJONG CORNER ASK THE EXPERT Q: Can I redeem a joker from a dead player's rack? A: When a dead player has jokers exposed on her rack, some of her jokers might be redeemable and some might not, depending on whether the joker was exposed properly or not. The General Rule on Joker Validity • Jokers that were exposed properly are valid for redemption. If you make a kong, nobody has enough information about which hand you're making, so you can't be declared dead on the basis of that exposure alone. Any jokers in that kong are live and stay alive even if you are declared dead later. • Jokers that were exposed improperly are not available for redemption. Let's say that your first exposure was a kong of fours (with a joker) and your second exposure was a kong of dragons (with a joker). Let's say that the card does not have a hand that allows kongs of fours and dragons (let's imagine that the hand is clearly not anywhere on the card). Anybody could now declare you dead, based on your improper second exposure. Any jokers that had been exposed PRIOR to the blunder (the jokers in the first exposure) are still valid for redemption, but any jokers exposed in the course of making the blunder (the jokers in the second exposure) are dead. All portions of the hand exposed erroneously are to be returned to the sloping front of the rack, including and especially the now-dead jokers. • It sometimes occurs that an error (for instance, too many or too few tiles in the hand) is not discovered until sometime later (so that the exact timing of the error and any joker exposures is not known or cannot be determined).
