When the Germans occupy Paris, they flee to Saint-Malo on the Brittany coast, where Marie-Laure’s great uncle lives. In another world in Germany, an orphan boy, Werner, grows up with his younger sister, Jutta, both enchanted by a crude radio Werner finds. He becomes a master at building and fixing radios, a talent that wins him a place at an elite and brutal military academy and, ultimately, makes him a highly specialized tracker of the Resistance. Mahjong Club Please contact Shelley Deixler at shell842@gmail.com for 14   Vitalia Voice | May 2015

MALKA'S MAHJONG CORNER - ASK THE EXPERT Q: How did mahjong get its name? A: The name of the game. In the very earliest known writings about the game (the 1890s), the game was referred to by various names, among them chung fa, que ma que, or ma que (in Cantonese: mah cheuk). The Chinese who played it did not call the game “mahjong” and that name was not used until the early 1900s. When Joseph Park Babcock undertook to introduce the game to the USA in 1920, he decided that it would be beneficial to give the game a name that he could trademark. For reasons known only to him, he decided "mahjong" would sound better than mah que, and he decided to write it as "Mah-Jongg," with the hyphen and double "g." "Mah Que" can be translated as "sparrow," "flax sparrow," or possibly as "hemp bird." Flax or jute or hemp are variegated (comprised of numerous colors, brown, gray, black, white), and variegated-color birds, "hemp birds," are sparrows. So now you know that "mahjong" = mah que = sparrows, thus "mahjong" means "sparrows!" The mahjong tiles, when shuffled, make a melodious noise reminiscent of the noise of numerous sparrows squabbling over scattered food crumbs. This sound effect is most apparent when shuffling bone-and-bamboo tiles, and when you're hearing the sound. When Babcock's efforts led to mahjong becoming intensely popular in the early 1920s, other entrepreneurs, authors, and companies made their own sets and books. These others could not use the name "mah-jongg" since Babcock trademarked it. So they came up with other names, among them Ma Chong, Ma Chiang, Ma Deuck, Pung Chow, Pe-Ling, and "The Game of a Thousand Intelligences." Over the course of a couple of years, it became common to refer to the game by the generic name "mahjong" (dropping the hyphen and the double “g”).

Sabal Palms

T

he sabal (or cabbage) palm is native to Florida and coastal regions of North and South Carolina and Georgia. It is also the state tree of both Florida and South Carolina. The name cabbage palm comes from its edible immature leaves or “heart,” which is cabbagelike in flavor.

Nan Rothschild Resident Master Gardener mininan1@htcplus.net

Cabbage palms have costapalmate (hand-shaped) fan-shaped leaves with 3-4 foot blades and 3-6 foot long petioles (the stalk that joins the leaf to the base). When free of nutrient deficiencies, this species has a full, round canopy atop a trunk that is 10 to 16 inches in diameter and up to 40 feet in height. Branched inflorescences (cluster of flowers on a stem) produced during late spring months usually extend beyond the leaves in the canopy and contain thousands of tiny creamy-white fragrant flowers that attract bees. The palm produces ¼ inch black fruits in late summer that are often consumed by birds, raccoons, and other animals. They are cold hardy to about 15°F and are fairly salt spray tolerant on their foliage, but not on the root zone. Seedlings germinate easily but grow slowly, taking 15 to 30 years to develop a visible trunk under natural conditions. Most are typically dug from pastures or private property and transplanted as mature specimens into landscapes. Cut roots do not branch and produce new growing tips, but die back to trunk. The cut roots are replaced by massive numbers of adventitious roots originating from the root initiation zone at the base of the trunk. Young, trunkless sabal palms don’t have functional root initiation zones to produce replacement roots and transplanting these palms is virtually impossible. It takes at least eight months to produce a new root system. Palms subsist solely on water stored in their trunks at this time. Mortality rates are high. Removing all leaves during this stressful stage increases survival rate. Some nurseries transplant sabal palms from their fields into large containers to optimize conditions which

can result in better survival rates. Sabal palms should always be transplanted at the same depth as they were originally growing to prevent suffocation. Sabal palms should have a full 360° canopy. Potassium deficiency causes premature leaf loss in palms and limits the number of leaves a palm can support. Potassium deficiency also causes translucent yellow orange spotting on the oldest leaves. Although unsightly, they shouldn’t be removed until completely dead because palms extract potassium from their oldest leaves and translocate into newly developing leaves. When leaves are dead, they may be cut several inches from the trunk, leaving an attractive pattern of persistent bases (boots). These may fall off naturally after several years, although some last decades. The only other nutritional deficiency is magnesium, which results in broad yellow bands around the perimeter of old leaves and is caused by improper fertilizer. Sabal palms should be fertilized three to four times a year. Stressed palms are susceptible to palmetto weevils, which kill the meristem and three lethal diseases: ganoderma butt rot, thieloviopis trunk rot, and Texas phoenix palm decline. Personally, I love to plant orchids, air plants, and ferns in the boots of this palm.
