community news

Painting Your Home Is it time to paint? This is a popular question that a lot of people will find themselves asking this time of the year. Below are some tips you may find helpful when inspecting your home’s paint condition and they can aid you in making your decision to help keep your community looking good.

Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919

Repainting your home, community, or condominium exterior is an important part of preserving the value and protecting the materials. Paint not only gives your property visual appeal; it also helps to protect its structural integrity by providing a coating that resists wear from the elements. If you are unsure when to re-paint your home exterior, look for these seven signs that indicate a new coat of paint should be in its future: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Peeling Paint Spidery Cracks on Surface Fading Color Exterior Looks Dirty and Washing Doesn’t Help 5. Water Stains 6. Signs of Wood Rot 7. Color Choice Looks Dated In general terms, all paints have four basic

4   Vitalia Voice | November 2015

components which impact these properties. These components are: 1.

PIGMENTS: provide color and hiding; some are used to impart bulk at relatively low cost.

2. BINDER: “binds” the pigment together and provides film integrity and adhesion. 3. LIQUID (or the “carrier”): provides desired consistency and makes it possible to apply the pigment and binder to the surface being painted. 4. ADDITIVES: low-level ingredients that provide specific paint properties such as mildew resistance, defoaming, and good flow and leveling. Come see me if you would like more information on painting your home.

Activities to Celebrate the Season

Carlyn Hagler Lifestyles Director chagler@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505

The weather has been gorgeous and oh how I love the lower humidity! This is my favorite time of year! We want to give a big WELCOME BACK to all the residents who were gone during the summer (or since I started) and another big WELCOME to all the new residents! Have you noticed how many new homes have gone up in the past six months? It seems like each time I drive to the sales office I see more homes than the time before! There are so many new faces! Next time you’re at the Captiva Club please stop by and introduce yourself to us. The Event Planning Committee along with the Lifestyles Department is hard at work lining up the 2016 events and activities. I believe you will be happy with some of the new ideas coming from this group! Remember, there is a suggestion box outside my door and I would love to hear your ideas too.

Be sure to save the dates on the upcoming entertainment listed on pages 7 and 9. Don’t forget to check out the events on the calendar in the newsletter for specific details along with the website for updates (VitaliaAtTraditionHOA.com). I have received great feedback on the Movie Nights, which now have been expanded to two nights per month plus FREE POPCORN. Be sure to bring along your favorite beverage and other preferred snacks! New Year’s Eve is going to be…WOW! Get your tickets before they sell out for this spectacular event! See the ad on page 5. It’s that time of year to reflect and be thankful. As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s my wish you’re able to be with friends and family who mean the most to you. Happy Thanksgiving!

MALKA'S MAHJONG CORNER - ASK THE EXPERT Q: Someone called me dead, but I’m not dead. What now? A: If a player has erroneously issued a death challenge, or if a player has erroneously denied one, the erring player must pay value of the cheapest hand on the card (25) to the other player. After denying the death challenge, the game continues. Then at the end the challenged player’s tiles are examined to determine who pays whom. If you call me dead and I deny it, and at the end of the hand we see that you were wrong, you owe me 25. If you call me dead and I deny it, and at the end of the hand, I was wrong, I owe you 25.

Orange You Glad It’s Thanksgiving Soup Ingredients 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 tbsp unsalted butter 1 medium onion, finely chopped 4 carrots, finely chopped Salt and pepper 1/2 cup pulpy orange juice 2 boxes frozen butternut squash puree

2 or 3 cups chicken broth Salt and pepper Grated nutmeg 1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme leaves, for garnish 1 tbsp orange zest, for garnish

Recipe courtesy of Rachael Ray on foodnetwork.com

Instructions Heat a soup pot over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter. When butter has melted, add the onion and carrots and cook until vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Deglaze with the orange juice and simmer for 1 to 2 minutes, scraping the bottom of the pot with a wooden spoon.

Transfer the mixture to a food processor or a blender. Puree the mixture until smooth, then return to pot over medium heat. To mixture, add the frozen butternut squash puree and the chicken broth and stir to combine. Adjust the seasoning. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let simmer for 10 minutes. Grate some fresh nutmeg and stir to combine.

Thanksgiving Turkeys Ingredients 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 30 candy corn candies, plus 6 white tips of candy corn candies 6 chocolate sandwich cookies, such as Oreos

6 mini peanut butter cups 6 malt balls 1 cup red frosting 6 chocolate sandwich cookies, such as Oreos, with tops removed Recipe courtesy of Giada on foodnetwork.com

Instructions Place the chocolate chips in a medium glass bowl. Set the bowl over a saucepan of barely simmering water. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the chocolate has melted, about 4 minutes. Set aside to cool slightly. For each turkey, push 5 candy corn candies, tip-side down, into the cream filling of a chocolate sandwich cookie to make the feathers. Dip the flat, larger end of a peanut butter cup in the melted chocolate, allowing any excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl. Place the peanut butter cup, chocolate-dipped-end down, onto the sandwich cookie. Dip a malt ball into the melted chocolate. Place the malt ball onto the sandwich cookie above the peanut butter cup to make the head. Dip the flat end of the white candy corn tip in the chocolate. Place on the malt ball, to make the turkey beak. Refrigerate until the chocolate has set, about 10 minutes. Place the red frosting in a piping bag. Using scissors, cut a small opening in the end of the piping bag. Pipe a small piece of frosting under the malt ball to make the turkey’s beard. Place a cookie (with the top half removed) on a platter. Stand the turkey upright into the cream filling. 16   Vitalia Voice | November 2015
