Right Plant, Right Place Scott Henry of Girard Environmental Services shares with us the first principle of FloridaFriendly Landscaping™ below.

Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919

“Right Plant, Right Place” is the easy way to have a healthy, low-maintenance landscape by using plants that are best suited for your community’s natural environment. When following this basic principle and choosing plants that match your site’s soil, light, and water conditions, you will create a landscape that will require minimal irrigation, fertilization, and application of pesticides. Your landscape, if maintained correctly, will require less money, time, and effort on your part, while still looking healthy and beautiful. In addition, you’ll save water and help prevent pollution by lowering the risk of pollutants finding their way into ground or surface waters. Keeping excess nitrogen and phosphorous out of the water improves the health of water bodies and helps preserve Florida’s fragile environment. Getting started is easy; begin by identifying your happy plants. Plants that thrive through the heat of the summer and the cold winter temperatures are likely the right plant in the right place. Make a note of the conditions surrounding those plants. Are they in full sun, shade, dry or wet areas? When you start your research for plants to add to these areas, look for plants that do well in similar conditions. There are hundreds of places to source your landscape plants and trees, plus it’s a lot of fun to visit local nurseries and get even more information and ideas! Here are a few of my favorite Floridaspecific resources for sunny Florida plant information that I recommend: www.floridayards.org and www. south-florida-plant-guide.com. These searchable plant databases make it easy for you to find plants that match your site conditions. Another site I recommend is www.floridayards.org, where you can find an online copy of the Florida-Friendly Landscaping™

Guide to Plant Selection & Landscape Design, from the Southwest Florida Water Management District, which is a great resource to help you better understand the needs and requirements of landscapes in our diverse Florida climate. Coming in next month’s article, I will provide information and tips about your irrigation and how to water your landscape more efficiently.

April Showers Bring May Flowers!

Carlyn Hagler Lifestyles Director chagler@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505

Did you know April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month? President Richard Nixon established National Volunteer Week with an executive order in 1974, as a way to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers. Every sitting U.S. President since Nixon has issued a proclamation during National Volunteer Week (as have many U.S. mayors and governors). Since then, the original emphasis on celebration has widened; the week has become a nationwide effort to urge people to get out and volunteer in their communities. Every April, charities, hospitals, and communities recognize volunteers and foster a culture of service. Please join Tyler, Evergreen Lifestyles Management, AV Homes, and myself in thanking all the selfless residents who give of their time to make Vitalia the great community that it is today. The list is endless of what volunteers have accomplished in this community. Additionally, there are Vitalia residents who

volunteer and give of their time to local non profits, hospitals and schools. The stories warm my heart and makes being part of this community so very special. Do you know a neighbor who gives his/her time to the community that you would like to be highlighted in a future newsletter? Please submit (in secret) a few words and picture (if possible) to my email, chagler@evergreen-LM.com. All submissions will be entered into a drawing and one person will be randomly chosen each month to appear in the Vitalia Voice. If you’re looking for volunteer opportunities, contact the local United Way, google local non profits or an area of interest such as foster children, animal shelters or hospitals. Speakers for our quarterly brunches are always from local non profits and are so interesting, so please join in the next brunch! “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” -- Gandhi

Meet the Ballroom Dance Instructor

New Personal Trainer

Michèle has been teaching ballroom dance since 2001. She was previously a specialist instructor for the Arthur Murray School of Dance in Syracuse and Latham, NY, as well as the Fred Astaire Studio in Latham, NY, teaching social, competitive, and exhibition ballroom dance. In 2005, she decided to leave the franchises that focus primarily on expensive “competitive” ballroom dancing with costly packages and instead focus on teaching “social” ballroom dancing for couples by way of private instruction. She opened the Albany Ballroom Social Dance Studio in Albany, New York and ran the studio for 10 years until relocating to Florida in 2016 where she has now opened “Ballroom at Tradition” in the master-planned community of Tradition in Port Saint Lucie. For more information, email ShallWeDanceVitalia@gmail.com.

Grant Broschard, a new personal trainer here at Vitalia, moved to Florida from Philadelphia approximately 4 years ago. He is an ISSA certified personal trainer with a background in sports. Growing up with two brothers fueled his competitive nature. Grant attended the University of Pittsburgh where he discovered his love of fitness and well-being. He is currently working on a specialization in senior fitness and physical therapy. Grant’s goal for his clients is progressive fitness with an emphasis on physical health. He’s very excited to be with Vitalia and bring his personal training style to the community. Call Grant at 215-806-1390 for your free consultation!

out & about Fitness Classes Current class schedules are available in the lobby and on the website calendar at VitaliaAtTraditionHOA.com. All classes are held in the Shoreside Aerobics Studio, unless otherwise specified.

Abs & More! 30 minutes of abdominal exercise combined with 20 minutes of a different target area each week (i.e.: arms, legs, back). You know you need to exercise your belly, but usually avoid it. So come join this class and check it off of your “to do list.” Core abdominal strength is essential for balance, strength, posture, coordination, and directly supports lower back strength. Reducing belly fat is beneficial for all around health and reduces the risk of sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and heart disease ( just to name a few) and makes it easier to put your pants and shoes on! Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor for this class.

All Level Yoga Authentic Hatha Yoga class with focus on proper alignment with emphasis on breath and meditation. This deeply relaxing class enlivens the body, challenges the mind and soothes the spirit. Please enter the room in silence and bring your own mat, towel, and water in a closed container.

Aquacise Sunset Beach Pool

An excellent cardio and strength workout for all levels by utilizing water weights, aqua gloves and noodles to achieve a very unique workout. Swimming is not required.

Aqua Zumba Sunset Beach Pool

Get your ‘groove on’ as you burn calories with a complete, no-impact workout. This class is for all who enjoy having a blast while getting in an aqua-fantastic workout!

Core Strength A safe yet effective, non-impact exercise class designed to strengthen the CORE muscles of the body while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Improve strength, posture, balance and coordination. A strong foundation is a key component to prevent injury, reduce back pain and enhance your activities of daily living. Modifications will be given to ensure safety and to cater to all levels.

Group X Toning Take your workout to the next level. This class is designed to strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group utilizing

hand weights and/or barbells and other equipment. Group exercise provides a motivating atmosphere that is conducive to working out! Any fitness level is welcome.

H20 Pilates Sunset Beach Pool

Non-impact strengthening and stretching movements that require precise breathing and muscle control. Practicing Pilates in the water develops trunk stabilization, enhances muscle strength, helps correct posture and relieves stress.

Line Dancing Line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.

Pilates The content of each class is dictated by the bodies that attend it. Want to fix your sciatica; Scoliosis; or Stenosis? Don’t have any injuries and wanna keep it that way? Learn how to stack yourself with integrity (perfect posture) so you can build strength and power wherever you need it.

Step and Tone This is a form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). It helps burn calories, reduce stress, promote restful sleep, and strengthen muscles. Incorporating both upper and lower body movements together will improve your coordination and agility, and the constant push up onto the step will increase leg strength.

Stretch Lengthen and strengthen your muscles, increase flexibility, reduce stress, and allow your body the time to relax and rebuild. Relieve joint pain, muscle soreness, and avoid injury. Stretching improves balance, posture and coordination, increases cardiovascular endurance, adds strength for daily activities, improves your sport, and prolongs life. Modifiers will be given for all levels - chairs can also be used if needed for assistance.

Yin/Restorative Yoga This is passive style using long stretches of 1-20 minutes to April 2016 | Vitalia Voice   9

out & about Fitness Classes work the fascia (connective tissue); we will be holding for 2-8 minutes per pose. Restorative takes the same pose and through the use of blankets, bolsters and/or blocks, allows the person to “melt” into a relaxed state. All work is done on the mat either seated or lying down and may utilize the wall.

Zumba Incorporates Latin and international music and dance with a blended balance of cardio and muscle toning.

Zumba Gold Introduces easy-to-follow choreography focusing on balance, range of motion, and coordination. A modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower-intensity.

Arts & Crafts Classes Questions regarding the Arts & Crafts Classes can be directed to Debbie Chisholm at 772-800-2504 or dchisholm@evergreen-LM.com.

Do you ever look at a painting or drawing and say, “I can do that.” Well you probably can. We believe if you really want to create something and you can feel it, then you can. The desire to create is half the battle. Now is the time to stop putting it off and just do it. We welcome everyone, from beginners to experienced artists. We work independently in all mediums. We all help each other to learn or improve on what we already know. There is no instructor and you bring your own supplies. Occasionally Ricky demonstrates how to paint in watercolors. Look in the Captiva Club lobby for those times. Stop by on Tuesdays or contact Ricky at sendaheartart@gmail.com.

We’ll be discussing Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons by Lorna Landvik. Lorna Landvik’s “Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons” is about book clubs -the camaraderie, the friendships and the lifelong bond created among members. It’s a testament to the power of women, the sisterhood and the support they can give to each other through the joys and terrors of life. The books are a backdrop to the story and the book club intended for book discussions, eating, wining and conversing is fun, but the stories of the five women are what make the story so heartwarming, uplifting, and inspiring. Upcoming books: May 10th - We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas and June 14th - The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman. Q: Should I leave spaces with my tiles? Regarding spaces between groupings in your hand and exposures. A: In the case of exposures (on the horizontal top of the rack), it’s a matter of etiquette to put spaces between your exposures, so all other players can easily see what your exposures are. The goal is to maximize harmony. Within the hand (on the sloping front of the rack), it’s a matter of strategy to keep your tiles all together, without any spaces. If you put spaces between your groupings, other players can deduce clues as to what you’re doing and how close you might be to making mahjong.
