Fertilizing A MESSAGE FROM TRUGREEN

Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919

The common grounds and homes received a lawn application that was completed on Monday, November 2nd. This was a granular application of fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. The application was kept five feet from the waters edge around the lakes in order to keep a safe ring of responsibility. The product applied was our premier granular product consisting of sulfur coated 50% slow release fertilizer. The treatment was timed to provide a much-needed boost in nutrients into the lawn coming out of nitrogen blackout period. For those that don’t know, the blackout ordinance states no fertilizer containing nitrogen and/or phosphorus shall be applied from June 1st to September 30th each year. With that in mind the lawns were very hungry right after that four-month hiatus of no nitrogen. That application was designed to feed the hungry grass with some much-needed nutrients at the proper timing. The fertilizer also included Phosphorous “P,” which will help the grass absorb nutrients from

4   Vitalia Voice | December 2015

the soil and maintain a healthier green color longer. We are allowed to apply “P” after taking multiple soil samples throughout the property, which revealed a high deficiency. Without this key macro element in the soil it’s very difficult for the grass to hold any color. This added “P” will be very helpful in overall health of the lawn and maintaining a green appearance longer. The application was a great benefit to the overall health and aesthetics of your lawn. A gradual improvement in color and density of your St. Augustine grass throughout the winter months is what we’re looking to achieve. The application will help maintain a lush green color in your lawns throughout the winter months provided there are no freezing temperatures. Please utilize your work order system if you need any help with your lawn or landscape and we appreciate your continued support to create a pleasing environment at Vitalia. THANK YOU! It is a pleasure serving you.

Top 12 Holiday Eating Tips

I Carlyn Hagler Lifestyles Director chagler@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505

t’s that time of year in which I LOVE to cook and bake! For our family, spending time together is always centered on a feast of foods, sweets, and snacks. Especially now that the kids are grown, any visit includes their special request of favorite dishes and desserts! As much fun and enjoyment the gatherings provide, I always find myself overindulging and then kicking myself come January 1st. I found dozens of “helpful holiday eating tips,” so I picked the top 12 to share with you in which I’m going to work on this year! 1.

Don’t skip meals. This is a common one for me as it backfires because I go to the next meal over hungry and eat more than intended.

2. Fill up on lower calorie, nutrient dense foods such as fruits, veggies, popcorn, or lean cold cuts on whole grain bread. This is a possibility. 3. Use a plate for even the smallest snack you’ll eat less. I need to remember this one! 4. Eat slowly and enjoy each mouthful. Hold your glass in the hand that you normally eat with to make finger foods less accessible. I may starve trying this one! Or make a big mess! 5. Eat only when you are hungry and not because food is near. Seriously? 6. Don’t waste calories on foods you don’t like or foods you can have anytime. What if I like EVERYTHING?

6   Vitalia Voice | December 2015

7. Don’t buy candy or goodies too far ahead of the event. Once purchased, keep them out of sight. But I KNOW where the stash is kept! 8. Avoid grazing while you cook. Little nibbles can really add up! When it’s time to eat, sit down and savor it! This would be my number one problem! 9. Beware of liquid calories - eggnog, beer, soda, and wine. They go down so easy and often do not add much nutrition to your intake. Yep, they sure do! 10. Don’t hang out near the food - socialize a distance away. This will help prevent unconscious nibbling. Honestly my house is not that big to stay away from nibbling! 11. If you’re bringing a dish to share, make it healthful and delicious. That way you know there will be one thing you can munch on without racking up calories too fast! I love this one! I’ve been experimenting with some healthier choices. 12. Forget the all-or-nothing mindset. Depriving yourself of special holiday foods or feeling guilty when you do enjoy, isn’t a healthful eating strategy. There is always January 1st New Year’s Resolutions! Right?! It is my wish that while you’re spending time with family, friends, and loved ones that you enjoy the season and cherish the time whether it’s watching football, taking a trip, enjoying the outdoors, or eating your favorite foods together!

out & about Fitness Classes Current class schedules are available in the lobby and on the website calendar at VitaliaAtTraditionHOA.com. All classes are held in the Shoreside Aerobics Studio, unless otherwise specified.

All Level Yoga Authentic Hatha Yoga class with focus on proper alignment with emphasis on breath and meditation. This deeply relaxing class enlivens the body, challenges the mind and soothes the spirit. Please enter the room in silence and bring your own mat, towel, and water in a closed container.

Aquacise Sunset Beach Pool

An excellent cardio and strength workout for all levels by utilizing water weights, aqua gloves and noodles to achieve a very unique workout. Swimming is not required.

Aqua Zumba Sunset Beach Pool

Get your ‘groove on’ as you burn calories with a complete, no-impact workout. This class is for all who enjoy having a blast while getting in an aqua-fantastic workout!

Core Strength A safe yet effective, non-impact exercise class designed to strengthen the CORE muscles of the body while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Improve strength, posture, balance and coordination. A strong foundation is a key component to prevent injury, reduce back pain and enhance your activities of daily living. Modifications will be given to ensure safety and to cater to all levels.

Group X Toning Take your workout to the next level. This class is designed to strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group utilizing hand weights and/or barbells and other equipment. Group exercise provides a motivating atmosphere that is conducive to working out! Any fitness level is welcome.

H20 Pilates Sunset Beach Pool

Non-impact strengthening and stretching movements that require precise breathing and muscle control. Practicing Pilates in the water develops trunk stabilization, enhances muscle strength, helps correct posture and relieves stress.

Line Dancing Line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one 8   Vitalia Voice | December 2015

or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.

Pilates The content of each class is dictated by the bodies that attend it. Want to fix your sciatica; Scoliosis; or Stenosis? Don’t have any injuries and wanna keep it that way? Learn how to stack yourself with integrity (perfect posture) so you can build strength and power wherever you need it.

Step and Tone This is a form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). It helps burn calories, reduce stress, promote restful sleep, and strengthen muscles. Incorporating both upper and lower body movements together will improve your coordination and agility, and the constant push up onto the step will increase leg strength.

Stretch Lengthen and strengthen your muscles, increase flexibility, reduce stress, and allow your body the time to relax and rebuild. Relieve joint pain, muscle soreness, and avoid injury. Stretching improves balance, posture and coordination, increases cardiovascular endurance, adds strength for daily activities, improves your sport, and prolongs life. Modifiers will be given for all levels - chairs can also be used if needed for assistance.

Yin/Restorative Yoga This is passive style using long stretches of 1-20 minutes to work the fascia (connective tissue); we will be holding for 2-8 minutes per pose. Restorative takes the same pose and through the use of blankets, bolsters and/or blocks, allows the person to “melt” into a relaxed state. All work is done on the mat either seated or lying down and may utilize the wall.

Zumba Incorporates Latin and international music and dance with a blended balance of cardio and muscle toning.

Zumba Gold Introduces easy-to-follow choreography focusing on balance, range of motion, and coordination. A modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower-intensity.

Save the Date February 14th Come enjoy an evening at the Captiva Club with your sweetheart! The evening will greet you with delectable food stations for your savory enjoyment. You will be left spellbound by the performance of Karen Grainger, female impressionist entertainer. MALKA'S MAHJONG CORNER - ASK THE EXPERT Q: What if someone had already taken a joker from an exposure (that made the hand dead) and two minutes later someone declares the hand dead? A player already has taken the joker. A: And then discarded, and the game went on for a couple turns? Well, then what happened has happened. It would be overkill to throw the game in. I can imagine a follow-up question: Then what if the player who redeemed the joker did it knowingly (knowing that the other player should be called dead) but really wanted that joker. That would be wrong. Sneaky people like that should be excluded from the table. May the tiles be with you.
