community news

Troubled by Reddish Stains on Your Concrete?

Do Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919

you have reddish stains on your pavers and concrete? Are you tired of the eyesore? Have you tried removing the stains yourself, but without success? There’s good news and bad news. The good news is that the stains are removable and your pavers and concrete can look like new. The bad news is that the stain-removal requires commercial chemicals, which are not available to the average homeowner. It raises the stain removal from a do-it-yourself project to a job that requires the service of a professional exterior cleaning company. Red/orange stains usually come from one of three sources: 1.

you should remember to ask: 1. Are they licensed and insured? 2. How do they treat red/orange stains? 3. Is a cleaning of the surrounding area included in the price? 4. Do they have references from past clients? You want to hear that they are licensed and insured. They should describe what produces red/orange stains (this will show that they know what they’re talking about) and that they use a commercial product to remove the stains. And yes, they should clean the surrounding area as part of the price.

Fertilizers used by lawn-care companies. These contain iron. When fertilizer granules land on concrete or pavers and are allowed to sit, the iron leaches out and leaves a red or orange spot.

2. Reclaimed water, often used in irrigation. This also contains iron. If sprinklers overshoot landscaping and spray onto the sides of houses, or runoff water goes across sidewalks or curbs, red/orange stains are left behind. 3. Battery acid. When dripped onto pavers or concrete, this produces an orange flash burn that looks similar to rust stains. Golf carts sitting in driveways are often the culprits of flash burn stains. A professional exterior cleaning company will have the right chemical products to treat iron stains and flash burns and remove them almost completely. Typically, they can treat this kind of staining on concrete, brick, tile, stone, stucco, asphalt, vinyl, and rubber. When you call a cleaning company about treating your stains, there are four questions 4   Vitalia Voice | January 2016

Why is #3 important? Removing the stains will also clean the surface. If the rest of the surface (like a driveway, for example) is not cleaned, you will have a light area next to a dirty area, and it will look odd. The company should clean the rest of the surface (using whatever method is standard for them) so that the whole surface looks consistent at the end of the job.

ONE LAST WORD Stain removal of this sort is not cheap, due to the fact that the necessary products are not cheap. Expect to pay $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot, depending on the type, size, and scope of the stained area, and then an additional standard price for the finish clean of the surrounding area. If you need a recommendation for a quality company that Evergreen has used in the past, feel free to contact me. They can take care of virtually any stain on concrete or pavers.

New Year’s Fitness Resolutions

I

t’s that time again…you’ve made a New Year’s resolution to get in shape! You buy yourself some new workout clothes and show up at the gym with water bottle and towel in hand. “I am ready to go!” Now what?

Terri Cousins Personal Trainer

tlcfitnessonline.com 772-475-1039

You gaze around the gym staring at the exercise machines, perhaps nervous or even intimated. However, you muster up your bravery, and (without warming up or stretching - yikes!) you hop aboard a machine or two, and go full throttle. The “Peter Pan Syndrome” has just kicked in. “I used to do this all the time, I will be just fine.” While inside, you are secretly hoping that you survive the workout without embarrassing yourself and praying that you don’t get injured. As a trainer who has witnessed this scenario for a good 25+ years, I am watching you and thinking exactly the same thing. Fast forward one month. It’s 7:30pm…you’re on the couch watching Wheel of Fortune after just eating a large dinner and icing multiple body parts that hurt from your New Year’s resolution. Now too tired and sore to go to the gym, you say to yourself, “I’ll go tomorrow.” You have already fizzled out and it is not even February! Trying to get in shape (or re-shape) is hard work, intimidating, and can be very overwhelming. So this begs the question, “How do you stop the negative cycle and succeed this year?” Here are some great hints to help you get off to the right start and achieve those goals once and for all: 1.

Rule #1 - Safety first. You will be never hit your goals if you are injured.

2. Get real! Be honest with yourself about your health. How is your breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, balance, cholesterol, 8   Vitalia Voice | January 2016

mood, and muscle pain(s)? Does your quality of life need to improve? Are your activities of daily life limited? Do you like the way you look? 3. Devise a plan of action. You never plan to fail, but you do fail to plan! How are you going to get there? 4. Pace yourself. Write goals and make small steady changes. Drastic changes are doomed to fail and the body doesn’t take kindly to them. Introduce one realistic positive change each week. Reward yourself for your success no matter how small (preferably not with chocolate) then move to the next one and DON’T QUIT. 5. Stop making excuses. Don’t spend more time complaining about the problem than you do to fix it. Note: Do you have injuries or health conditions? You can slap any label you want on it; the magic question still remains...what are you going to DO about it? There is always a way. Don’t let it stop you. 6. Stop the guesswork. Work with a Certified Fitness Professional who can help devise a safe and effective health/ wellness program designed specifically for you that will fit into your way of life. At the very least, sit down for a free consultation to review your plan to make sure you are not doing more harm than good or to gather helpful information to get off to the right start. Make 2016 the year that you finally KEPT that New Year’s resolution! I am here to help, as are our other Vitalia trainers. Feel free to call me with any questions. I am an ISSA Certified Specialist in Exercise Therapy, Personal Trainer, and Group Fitness Instructor and have been working with Vitalia residents for over seven years.

out & about Fitness Classes Current class schedules are available in the lobby and on the website calendar at VitaliaAtTraditionHOA.com. All classes are held in the Shoreside Aerobics Studio, unless otherwise specified.

All Level Yoga Authentic Hatha Yoga class with focus on proper alignment with emphasis on breath and meditation. This deeply relaxing class enlivens the body, challenges the mind and soothes the spirit. Please enter the room in silence and bring your own mat, towel, and water in a closed container.

Aquacise Sunset Beach Pool

An excellent cardio and strength workout for all levels by utilizing water weights, aqua gloves and noodles to achieve a very unique workout. Swimming is not required.

Aqua Zumba Sunset Beach Pool

Get your ‘groove on’ as you burn calories with a complete, no-impact workout. This class is for all who enjoy having a blast while getting in an aqua-fantastic workout!

Core Strength A safe yet effective, non-impact exercise class designed to strengthen the CORE muscles of the body while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Improve strength, posture, balance and coordination. A strong foundation is a key component to prevent injury, reduce back pain and enhance your activities of daily living. Modifications will be given to ensure safety and to cater to all levels.

Group X Toning Take your workout to the next level. This class is designed to strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group utilizing hand weights and/or barbells and other equipment. Group exercise provides a motivating atmosphere that is conducive to working out! Any fitness level is welcome.

H20 Pilates Sunset Beach Pool

Non-impact strengthening and stretching movements that require precise breathing and muscle control. Practicing Pilates in the water develops trunk stabilization, enhances muscle strength, helps correct posture and relieves stress.

Line Dancing Line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one

or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.

Pilates The content of each class is dictated by the bodies that attend it. Want to fix your sciatica; Scoliosis; or Stenosis? Don’t have any injuries and wanna keep it that way? Learn how to stack yourself with integrity (perfect posture) so you can build strength and power wherever you need it.

Step and Tone This is a form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). It helps burn calories, reduce stress, promote restful sleep, and strengthen muscles. Incorporating both upper and lower body movements together will improve your coordination and agility, and the constant push up onto the step will increase leg strength.

Stretch Lengthen and strengthen your muscles, increase flexibility, reduce stress, and allow your body the time to relax and rebuild. Relieve joint pain, muscle soreness, and avoid injury. Stretching improves balance, posture and coordination, increases cardiovascular endurance, adds strength for daily activities, improves your sport, and prolongs life. Modifiers will be given for all levels - chairs can also be used if needed for assistance.

Yin/Restorative Yoga This is passive style using long stretches of 1-20 minutes to work the fascia (connective tissue); we will be holding for 2-8 minutes per pose. Restorative takes the same pose and through the use of blankets, bolsters and/or blocks, allows the person to “melt” into a relaxed state. All work is done on the mat either seated or lying down and may utilize the wall.

Zumba Incorporates Latin and international music and dance with a blended balance of cardio and muscle toning.

Zumba Gold Introduces easy-to-follow choreography focusing on balance, range of motion, and coordination. A modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower-intensity. January 2016 | Vitalia Voice   9

out & about Club / Group MALKA'S MAHJONG CORNER Q: What is the rule when somebody wants to claim a discarded tile for exposure after the next person has already picked a tile from the wall? A: The “window of opportunity” is that brief moment in time during which a player may claim a discard. When does it open and when does it close? Opening the Window of Opportunity: The tile is “down” the instant a discarded tile is either named...or it touches the table top, whichever happens first. When the tile has been named and placed on the table top and the player has withdrawn her hand, the “window” opens. The discarded tile is available for claiming by another player. (The discarder can no longer change her mind and take it back.)
