The Down and Dirty About Vitalia’s Mulch
Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919
Every year at Vitalia we place a mulch layer around trees, shrubs, and plant beds that provides lots of benefits. In areas that are difficult to mow, irrigate, or otherwise maintain, we use mulch to replace turf or groundcovers. We also recommend placing mulch in shady areas where many plants don’t grow well.
Benefits of Red Mulch
• • • • • •
•
Beauty: The color contrasts with the green lush tropical landscape in Vitalia. Health: Some studies have shown that red mulch reflects sunlight onto the plants. Soil Temperature: Your mulch keeps the soils and plant roots warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Moisture: Mulch slows evaporation and reduces the water needs of your plants. Helpful: 2-3” will help inhibit weed germination and growth. Improves Soil: As your mulch decomposes, the organic materials break down with microorganisms to help make soil more fertile. Protection: By preventing certain plant diseases. When placed in a ring around shrubs and trees (at least 12 inches from the trunk), it reduces the likelihood of damage from trimmers and mowers.
There are many factors to consider when mulch is selected for your community landscape. Depending on your priorities, you could make a decision based on any or all of the following: • Cost • Color • Origins of the mulch • Durability • Nutrient content • Texture/Appearance All of the different kinds of mulch available in Florida have benefits and drawbacks. Cypress, melaleuca, and pine bark are the longest lasting types of mulch but don’t offer plants many
nutrients when they break down. Soil pH may be reduced by pine bark and pine straw, which would be excellent for acid-loving plants like azaleas, but not plants that require high-pH soil. At Vitalia we use a quality renewable hardwood mulch that is dyed the color red. This mulch is recycled from land clearing and arbor trimming from native trees which is specially ground in to provide elongated pieces that help the mulch knit together and hold it in place during our extreme weather events. The color red comes from naturally occurring iron oxide. We never use recycled mulch made from ground up pallets and crates, which can contain CCA (used to preserve the wood in the pallets).
New Homeowner? If you have issues with the inside of your home that need attention, please contact AV Homes Customer Care at 800-858-5933. For landscape questions, please contact Girard Environmental Services using their ticketing system: www.MyVitalia.com, where you will receive updates directly to your email.

National Ice Cream Month!
Carlyn Hagler Lifestyles Director chagler@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505
Summer is here and many residents are on vacation, but the events won’t slow down for the summer! Be sure to join us on July 4th for the Captiva Club 2nd Anniversary and enjoy the music of the OPM Band! This event is free to enjoy either poolside or on the lawn. Hopefully you purchased tickets in June for the yummy BBQ of chicken and ribs. If not, feel free to bring a picnic lunch and your favorite beverage and enjoy the music either poolside or on the Captiva Club lawn. National Ice Cream Day is July 17th so come join us in the Captiva Club Demo Kitchen from 1pm-2pm for a cool, refreshing cup of ice cream! Be sure to RSVP at the front lobby desk so we have a headcount!
Some Fun Ice Cream Tidbits:
•
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month. He also established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday in the month.
•
Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri is credited with inventing the ice cream cone. On July 23, 1904 at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, he filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream to make the first ice cream cone. There is some controversy over this claim because Italo Marchiony of New York City filed a patent for the ice cream cone months before the fair opened. He was selling lemon ice in cones as early as 1896.
•
Thousands of years ago, people in the Persian Empire would put snow in a bowl, pour grape-juice concentrate over it and ate it as a treat. They did this when the weather was hot and used the snow saved in the cool-keeping underground chambers known as “yakhchal,” or taken from the snowfall that still remained at the stop of mountains by the summer capital.
4 Vitalia Voice | July 2016
•
It is believed that ice cream was first introduced into the United States by Quaker colonists who brought their ice cream recipes with them. Their ice cream was sold at shops in New York and other cities during the colonial era.
•
Ben Franklin, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson were known to have been regular eaters of ice cream.
•
First Lady Dolley Madison served ice cream at the Inaugural Ball in 1813.
•
In 1832, African American confectioner, Augustus Jackson created multiple ice cream recipes as well as a superior technique to manufacture ice cream.
•
In 1843, Philadelphian, Nancy Johnson was issued the first U.S. patent for a small-scale hand-cranked ice cream freezer.
•
It is said that today there are over 1,000 ice cream flavors.

Vitalia Event Planning Committee Submitted by Cathy Powers, Chairperson Summer fun is in full swing with planned Vitalia parties to enjoy! July 4th is just the ticket as we join with friends and neighbors for the birthday of our nation and celebrate the Second Anniversary of our Captiva Club opening! Calendars should be marked for our own Woodstock Reunion on August 19th and then our Labor Day luncheon on September 5th. Here’s a peak at next year’s entertainment showcase taking place in the Grand Treasure Ballroom. Plans are underway for nights to create memories in December, January, February, March, and April. The fantastic turnout this past year for one of our excellent stage shows has resulted in an unprecedented Vitalia happening. The Bronx Wanderers will be returning to the Captiva Club stage for two nights in 2017! Yes, that’s right - two consecutive nights! So set your schedules now to enjoy these superlative performers on April 7th AND 8th! More to come… 6 Vitalia Voice | July 2016

out & about Fitness Classes Current class schedules are available in the lobby and on the website calendar at VitaliaAtTraditionHOA.com. All classes are held in the Shoreside Aerobics Studio, unless otherwise specified.
Abs & More! 30 minutes of abdominal exercise combined with 20 minutes of a different target area each week (i.e.: arms, legs, back). You know you need to exercise your belly, but usually avoid it. So come join this class and check it off of your “to do list.” Core abdominal strength is essential for balance, strength, posture, coordination, and directly supports lower back strength. Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor for this class.
Aquacise at Sunset Beach Pool An excellent cardio and strength workout for all levels by utilizing water weights, aqua gloves and noodles to achieve a very unique workout. Swimming is not required.
Aqua Zumba at Sunset Beach Pool Get your ‘groove on’ as you burn calories with a complete, no-impact workout. This class is for all who enjoy having a blast while getting in an aqua-fantastic workout!
Core Strength A safe yet effective, non-impact exercise class designed to strengthen the CORE muscles of the body while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Improve strength, posture, balance and coordination. A strong foundation is a key component to prevent injury, reduce back pain and enhance your activities of daily living. Modifications will be given to ensure safety and to cater to all levels.
Group X Toning Take your workout to the next level. This class is designed to strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group utilizing hand weights and/or barbells and other equipment. Group exercise provides a motivating atmosphere that is conducive to working out! Any fitness level is welcome.
H20 Pilates at Sunset Beach Pool Non-impact strengthening and stretching movements that require precise breathing and muscle control. Practicing Pilates in the water develops trunk stabilization, enhances muscle strength, helps correct posture and relieves stress.
Line Dancing Line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one 10 Vitalia Voice | July 2016
or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.
Pilates The content of each class is dictated by the bodies that attend it. Want to fix your sciatica; Scoliosis; or Stenosis? Don’t have any injuries and wanna keep it that way? Learn how to stack yourself with integrity (perfect posture) so you can build strength and power wherever you need it.
Step and Tone This is a form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). It helps burn calories, reduce stress, promote restful sleep, and strengthen muscles. Incorporating both upper and lower body movements together will improve your coordination and agility, and the constant push up onto the step will increase leg strength.
Stretch Lengthen and strengthen your muscles, increase flexibility, reduce stress, and allow your body the time to relax and rebuild. Relieve joint pain, muscle soreness, and avoid injury. Stretching improves balance, posture and coordination, increases cardiovascular endurance, adds strength for daily activities, improves your sport, and prolongs life. Modifiers will be given for all levels - chairs can also be used if needed for assistance.
Yin/Restorative Yoga This is passive style using long stretches of 1-20 minutes to work the fascia (connective tissue); we will be holding for 2-8 minutes per pose. Restorative takes the same pose and through the use of blankets, bolsters and/or blocks, allows the person to “melt” into a relaxed state. All work is done on the mat either seated or lying down and may utilize the wall.
Zumba Incorporates Latin and international music and dance with a blended balance of cardio and muscle toning.
Zumba Gold Introduces easy-to-follow choreography focusing on balance, range of motion, and coordination. A modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower-intensity.

Book Club Tuesday, July 12th | 9:30am | Augustine Room
We’ll be discussing Paris Time Capsule by Ella Carey. The book synopsis is below. New York–based photographer Cat Jordan is ready to begin a new life with her successful, button-down boyfriend. But when she learns that she’s inherited the estate of a complete stranger—a woman named Isabelle de Florian—her life is turned upside down. Cat arrives in Paris to find that she is now the owner of a perfectly preserved Belle Époque apartment in the ninth arrondissement, and that the Frenchwoman’s family knew nothing about this secret estate. Managing Bubbie is the heartrending, hilarious family memoir. The author recounts the frequently hectic, everexhausting trials of one Jewish family in Miami Beach as they try to oversee the care of the elderly, unmanageable Lea Lazega. As they scramble for an acceptable assisted living facility and struggle to get her medication in line, they discover the difficulties of controlling a woman who time and again eluded catastrophe by refusing to be told what to do. A tapestry of an American family in the 1980s, Managing Bubbie also revisits the Holocaust period to mine the love, hope, and humor that emerged from the deepest despair. Mahjong Club Please contact Shelley Deixler at shell842@gmail.com for more information and days/times that the club meets. MALKA'S MAHJONG CORNER: ASK THE EXPERT Q: My group plays with the fourteenth tile, and a question came up... A: I cannot answer any questions that arise from the use of illegal rules like “picking ahead” or “playing with a future.” You are using an unofficial table rule and you have to figure out the answers to questions arising from your table rule. I have only seen two rulings from the League about this style of play: (1) Rule #1 on the back of the NMJL card says, in all caps, “NO PICKING OR LOOKING AHEAD.” That rule has been on the back of the card for decades and (2) In the January 2014 bulletin, the League said, “NO... The fourteenth tile does NOT belong to the Player picking ahead...it only becomes their tile when it is their turn.” 16 Vitalia Voice | July 2016
